A very simple yet charming and peaceful place. The cloisters were a joy to walk through to get out of the heat and crowds and be in a quiet yet awe-inspiring space. A wonderful spot to stop for a breather!
Amazing Jewel of Roman art, this sanctuary founded at the beginning of the ninth century is one of the most important spiritual and cultural homes in Languedoc. Located on the way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, housing a piece of the Real Cross, it was prosperous until the beginning of the 15th century. After having been sacked during the religion' wars, part of his cloister was dismantled in the 19th century. The monastery only remains the refectory and the abbey church today. Two relics are still sheltered there, those of Saint Guilhem which would contain fragments of clothes of the Virgin Mary and the bones of St Guilhem in particular the femur ... and a fragment of the cross of Christ. Only present that Saint-Guilhem agreed to accept from his parent and friend Charlemagne during his foundation of the abbey and his withdrawal in the mountains: "I give the altar of the very holy Savior, the wood of the Holy Cross and to Blessed Guilhem ..." He had obtained it itself from the priest of Zacharie in the name of the patriarch of Jerusalem in the year 800. This gift undoubtedly made the renown of the Gellone abbey. She attracted many pilgrims and knights. Unquestionable unifying element for the country of Guilhem, this object that is repeatedly coveted, protected from invaders and other Protestants when the village was taken during the wars of religion, is always preserved since the year 800. It is visible in the abbey to the right of the choir. The reliquary is in silver, adorned with precious stones. Wood which constitutes one of the fragments of the real cross measures "five inches long". It rests in a niche under the protection of an iron gate. Do not miss the organ built in 1782 and unchanged with a fantastic sound, just the one pilgrims could hear and enjoy in the 18th century ! Finally, the lapidary museum located in the old monks' refectory houses jewels from elements of the 12th century two amazing material reconstructions of the cloister. To this is added the tomb of the founder of the abbey, Guillaume Duc d'Aquitaine, cousin of Charlemagne and eponymous hero of the village.
A very cool abbey. I'm not kidding you. It's freezing on the inside of it for some strange reason. Out of all of the churches that I visited so far on this trip, this one definitely has a creepy vibe in parts of it. That's not necessarily a negative though. It has a living history you can feel. It's absolutely stunning to photograph. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy photography.
We have met the kindest people today. They have told us so many fun facts about the abbey. Thank you Cecile and Adele for making our visit so lovely!
Wonderful, peaceful and contemplative. A must stop if you are in the region. The village surrounding the abbey is beautiful and worth a visit. Picturesque is the best word to describe the village. The cloister is very pleasant. Plan on a least an hour for a visit. See the museum and the library. The crypt is a little austere, so you might consider skipping it.
I love this place. Walking around the town makes you relive history. The medieval architecture is stunning. An important stop on the Camino de Santiago. The scallop shells lead the way. A must stop if you are in the Languedoc area.
A stone village set in a valley an amazing discovery, you can also do canoing and stroll around the village lots of artisanal shops would recommend for a day outing, abbey is also a good place to chill up
This small picturesque village is an extremely important point of the Camino. The narrow streets, the falls, the great restaurants anthe uphill wineyard will pay off for any drive or walk it may take. Spend some time on the main square. Buy goat cheese. Walk. Breath. The atmosphere here is so calming, so relaxing. i will return one day while I will do the Camino...

First time canoeing and this was a fine experience. Organized with good equipment. You can take your own pace. The river is incredibly beautiful, clean, peaceful and fun.
This is a 5/5 experience, even in overcast weather, when it's less busy. Lovely staff, beautiful scenery.
It was a fantastic experience, with beautiful scenery and was well organised. I lost my phone at the 6km 'rapid' when we capsized. I had expected never to get it back, but I spoke to an extremely kind staff member who said that he often goes and looks for things that people have lost. He went to the rapid that evening and found my phone!! Unbelievable! Above and beyond customer service!!! Thank you so much. Highly recommend.
We have been visiting Canoe Rapido for 7 years and have sometimes been more than once every summer. The staff a really friendly and the route is perfect for all levels of experience. We will be back soon!!
Had my first experience on the 12 km trail yesterday. We rented a 2 seater canoe and a kayak (since we were 3 adults)) and was super fun, just be careful and don't paddle too much at the 'rapide' otherwise you may have chance of falling off ! We got stuck at a rock and toke alot of water in, but luckily the water is pretty shallow so we got out and managed to carry on. I can really recommend this, you have alot of time to chill and stop for a swim or eat your packed lunch :) but oh boy my arms hurts today!
We came Sunday morning time with 2 young kids. Did the 4 km head and back. Had a great time. Since there's a dam, there's water. Many places to stop along the way. Should bring food and drinks with you it's super calm.
Fantastic experience, highly recommended. We chose the 12k course, three adults in two canoes. Beautiful scenery and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Rapids good fun 😊
Lot of fun. Take the 12 km route, it is not very far. Only one rapid that is a bit more serious ( after the 6km mark), but the rest is easy so safe with kids in the canoe. Nice to stop along the way and picnic, swim, relax. I strongly recommend this trip.

Super easy to find carpark, free parking for enjoying the beautiful village after the journey, staff kindly explained everything very well in English including the route and what to look out for/avoid. The set up is nice that you park your car at the end of the descent so no waiting around after you finish! The journey was amazing with lots of places to stop and enjoy a swim in the river! There are a few mini rapids but they are very enjoyable :) would reccomend taking the 12km nice and slow as you have lots of time to do it, so you can enjoy a swim in the river. Thanks for a great day!
You leave your car at the arrival park and they take you to the departure. So the car is waiting for you whenever you finish paddling. Very convenient. Beautiful river - nice small rapids. Friendly staff.
A great experience. A great means of travel through a lovely valley with amazing birds, butterfly's and frog. You can switch off and let the current take you in tranquility.
Great organization, super fun day!
The organisation is great and the landscape from the river breathtaking!
Very nice way of spending 3 or more hours at your own space down the river. Not strenuous. Took our small dog and he loved it.

Excellent corner of local history, with extremely helpful and friendly host, and a visit during which we discovered some really amazing pieces of art and authentic household items from hundreds of years ago. The model of the village, built by the host, with extreme accuracy, was the cherry on the top! Highly recommended stop for those visiting the area.
(Translated by Google) An excellent time and a very nice meeting. Jacques has a lot of humor and talks about his house, his museum and his figurines with a lot of passion. When I asked if I can charge my scooter's battery I got the answer that the person has to make a formal request to their superior before the can do it. Truly silly considering that we are talking about less than 0,10€ of electrical energy that I was even willing to pay for. What kind of management creates so much fear in their employees? And isn't the office the tourisme there to promote tourism? A little more courage and autonomy would be good.

We were lucky enough to be guided by Robin, a passionate and engaging guide! As regulars on guided tours (and also heritage professionals), we found the guide to be truly excellent! Highly informative, kind, and knowledgeable about his subjects! This is valuable enough to mention! The tours were very interesting and accessible to all, but Robin also knew how to satisfy our curiosity and delve deeper into our sometimes specific questions. The guided tour of Saint-Guilhem allowed us to (re)visit the abbey with a new perspective. The visit to the former Aniane Abbey was also a very pleasant surprise. The site is magnificent and astonishing (a former abbey transformed into a "penal colony" for young children) before being abandoned (a rehabilitation project is underway).

(Translated by Google) Open for 8 years I regularly walk past this brewery and see the evolution of the beer and the bar/restaurant. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to eat there yet, but it's one of my favorite things to visit in this village of Saint Guilhem le Désert. The owner is super friendly, and his welcome hasn't changed over the years.

(Translated by Google) Excellent! The cook and waitress are adorable. We had the croque monsieur (delicious, and a special mention for the eggplant, which was a treat!) as well as a vegetarian hot dog (also delicious). We tried two beers, which were also very good!
