Thin, 20m-high waterfall tumbling down the center of a dramatic 3D wall of hexagonal basalt columns.

We walked up to the waterfalls from the car park, the entire walk and back took about two hours. It was foggy when we left but we were still able to get some lovely photographs once at the waterfall. The path was mostly easy to walk on but the descent to the waterfall itself was rocky, slippy, and uneven, all of our party managed it fairly easily though. We went early and avoided the crowds.
Loved this spot! Great view and spectacular waterfall. Amazing how much wind and spray the falling water can generate. Wear your raingear!
Amazing view of the falls Nice hike up there. The path is clearly mentioned. Went there early morning at around 9 am and there weren’t a lot of people. Hike is moderate, not difficult.
Svartifoss, located in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, is a stunning waterfall known for its dark basalt columns that resemble organ pipes. The name means “Black Falls.” Surrounded by rugged landscapes, it’s a popular hiking destination and one of Iceland’s most photographed natural wonders.
Also known as, the “Black Waterfall,” is one of Iceland’s most iconic natural sights and a highlight of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. What makes it truly special is its unique setting — a cascade of water dropping gracefully over a backdrop of dark hexagonal basalt columns that look almost sculpted by hand. The striking contrast between the white water and the black rock gives it an almost cathedral-like appearance and has even inspired some of Iceland’s architectural designs, including Reykjavík’s Hallgrímskirkja. Reaching Svartifoss requires a moderate hike of about 30–45 minutes each way from the Skaftafell Visitor Center. The trail is well-marked and scenic, passing through lush green terrain (in summer) and offering smaller waterfalls along the way. The incline is steady but manageable for most visitors, and the payoff at the end is absolutely worth the effort. The viewpoint near the base provides the best perspective, though the rocks can be slippery, so good shoes are important. Because it’s one of the park’s most popular attractions, it can get busy during the day, especially in high season. Visiting early in the morning or closer to evening allows for a quieter and more peaceful experience. The lighting at those times also brings out the rich textures of the basalt columns beautifully. Facilities are conveniently located at the Skaftafell Visitor Center, including restrooms, parking, and a café, so it’s easy to plan your visit as part of a half-day exploration of the park. Weather can shift quickly in the area, so waterproof layers are always a smart choice. Overall, Svartifoss is one of Iceland’s must-see waterfalls — elegant, distinctive, and steeped in natural artistry. Its combination of accessible hiking, dramatic geology, and tranquil atmosphere makes it a memorable stop on any South Coast or Vatnajökull itinerary.
It feels I could enter Mordor (lord of the rings) if I had the secret code… impressive… worthwhile the walk up and down(bring crampons in winter)
Great place for a short hike. Pretty much all incline so be prepared for that! There are nice views and I recommend taking the short detour to Sel if you have the time because the view is lovel.
Easy hike up but it is uphill there. They have the grating on the floor to make it easier and some wooden steps. A small bit with some rocks to walk down. About 30mns each way. Once you get there there's a viewing bridge but you can't see much. You walk along the path to the metal viewing platform to get close up 1000 krona to park unless you've camped there but the camping has no indoor kitchen. Free toilets and seating area

Glacier
Nature & Parks
Part of a nature reserve, this large glacier is a popular hiking & photography destination.
Slide 1 of 8
It was rainy, windy as hell, rough, beautiful, and free, as nature should be. Free parking, no entrance fee, no WC. A short gravel road from the ring road to the parking area, it took a 10 mins walk to reach the view point and it was worth it to admire this massive glacier.
Really cool glacier, but there are better ones in Iceland. The parking is paid, and there’s a short 10-minute walk to reach the glacier viewpoint. Definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby, but don’t expect it to be the best glacier you see on your trip.
🧊❄️ So close to the glacier Amazing to see the ice up close and hear it creaking. Raw and powerful landscape.
Svínafellsjökull was a treat to visit. The colour bands were very interesting to see in person. You are able to get rather close to the ice in parts, but be cautious and follow and signs indicating to avoid areas. The soil near the ice can become very soft and you may loose a boot. There are some very striking flowers that grow nearby as well which were a nice surprise. The scale of the glacier sinks in as you get closer. Accessibility is limited as well, but there was an effort put in to implement a solid path for users.
Not spectacular, but you can’t get closer than this to a glacier without being on one. Worth the stop if you have the time.
Went here on May 6th, and if we were to go back to Iceland, we would definitely skip Jökulsárlón where you have to pay 1000 ISK for parking and come here instead! This is definitely one of our favourite places in Iceland. You get so close to the glacier, and we even saw some people climbed up on top of the glacier. The views of the mountains were incredible, and icebergs were scattered everywhere. It’s free to visit, and also has free parking. It is also quieter than the other glacier spots we visited. 100% recommended. Just a tip: Stop by at the lake for photos. It has nice reflections! Thank me later!
Beautiful glacial mountain in the middle of the peninsula. If you’re lucky enough to see it on a clear day, if you were spectacular. We were going to take the F Road. up to the glacier but were told that with the receding of glacier, you cannot get that close to it from the road. Also, with the rains, the road was muddy and not in good condition. In any event, beautiful rock formations throughout the south coast of the Peninsula.
Breathtaking but also very sad to see how far it's retreated. Very strange to hear the glacier groaning , creaking and cracking. A must visit before they're gone forever.

The helicopter was clean. The windows were spotless which resulted in a very clear view and great photos. The pilot was quite professional. He maintained continuous communication with other aircraft to ensure proper separation and safety. He maneuvered the aircraft in a manner which provided fantastic views for all occupants. I was extremely satisfied with my experience, and returned with a big smile.
11/10 experience!! An amazing customer experience from Malina, including adjusting our helicopter flight for the bad weather and accommodating us when the other passengers weren’t able to show up. Jonas was an incredible pilot and tour guide. Having only lived in Iceland for 1 year, he knew everything about the area and was willing to show us whatever we wanted to see, took pictures of us when we had our 1 in-flight landing, and provided wonderful conversations throughout the entire experience. I would not hesitate to book experiences with them again in the future and will be recommending them to everyone I know that plan to travel to Iceland in the future. If you’re thinking of booking with them, don’t hesitate!
We took a stunning flight in a helicopter over a glacier. Not cheap but a once in a lifetime experience. Very safe. Pilot (from Switzerland) was fantastic). Reception very helpful too. Thoroughly recommended. One of the highlights of our trip to Iceland.
20/10 experience. My husband booked this as our excursion during our weeklong vacation in Iceland & it absolutely did not disappoint! To start with the lady at the front desk was SO kind. She shared genuine excitement for what we were about to experience. The pilot was professional & did an excellent job of making sure we were safe while flying & took extra effort to make sure all passengers were getting the best views via the route we flew. We cant thank him enough for giving us the opportunity to experience such beauty from the sky. All in all, whatever you pay for this flight is absolutely worth the money. If you're considering it, even slightly, just DO IT. You wont regret it. We will cherish this experience for forever! I think I took 1000 pictures, but here are a few from our flight.
My wife and I recently flew with Atlantsflung while driving the ring road. We had an excellent flight and the staff was great! We were the only ones who booked a flight for our time slot and the staff provided us a discounted rate for a private tour.
We loved every second of the most amazing helicopter tour with Jonas from Skaftafell. We flew over outlet glaciers, a chain of craters, lakes, riverbeds and river deltas, lava fields, canyons and Landmannalaugar. The colours and landscapes are truly stunning and to top it all Jonas managed to land us on a peak at 3,000 ft. It was a beautiful, clear and still morning and the absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland
My story starts way back to Covid pandemic. Because of lock-down i couldn't use my voucher- I haven't asked for refund, as every penny counted for every companyin that time. After 5 years I tried my luck and the owner welcomed me even with short notice. The scenery was breathtaking. For a second I was doubtful after seeing that the plane was so small- but the flight was very smooth. Our pilot that day has been praised by our lovely receptionist and his experience has been shown in smoothness of the flight and all anecdotes during the trip. Thank you so much and hope to see you on other occasions.
10/10 !! Malina (customer service) and Jonas (pilot) provided an incredible experience. Don’t hesitate to book with them if you’re thinking about it, you won’t regret it! We did the 1hr helicopter Glacier tour with a landing.

Absolutely amazing day!!! We had such a great experience touring the ice caves today. My partner and I ended up being the only ones who booked on that day so had a 1 on 1 guided tour. Gunner who runs the tours is very knowledgeable and friendly. Made us feel really comfortable and gave us a great experience. He was also a fantastic photographer and kindly offered to take some photos of us as a couple and did a brilliant job. Really easy to locate from the parking lot detailed. After being loaded into a super jeep car the journey was about 20 minutes. Once we got as far as we could be car we walked about 20 minutes to the entrance of the glacier. We managed to go in inbetween other tours so practically had the caves to ourselves too. After about 30 minutes in the main cave we were taken to a smaller secondary cave with a river running though. Everything was beautiful and just as we imagined. Thank you so much for giving us a brilliant experience, we highly recommend 🥰🗻🧊❄️
Highly recommend to go for ice cave tour with Adventure Point. It is the best tour in my life ever. Gunnar is the perfect tour guide. His passion, knowledge and humor makes the journey amazing. He always had a lot of patience to wait for us to take photos and gave us some suggestions to take beautiful pictures. If I have chances to come again, I will absolutely go for Adventure Point every time.
Awesome Local guide that leads small groups through the ice cave Gunnar is a local guide that grew up in this area and therefore was able to show us the ice caves during the time where no tourists were there. Also, he leads only small groups through the ice caves, which makes the experience of the shining blue ice all around you very magically (only us+guide). I think Gunnar is probably one of the best secret tips and the ice cave tour was one of our best experiences during our 1 month Iceland trip. Further, he knows a lot interesting facts about the glacier and the area and we were able to go into the cave until the very end. Tip: bring along some waterbottles... The guide can show you the location to fill up glacier water and that was the best water I've ever tasted. Would recommend this tour 10/10 and will definitely book it again when I return to Iceland. Thank you Gunnar for the awesome experience and the cool pictures, Jan and Clara
Beyond expectation ! Gunna was very professional and insightful. Plus super friendly :) the tour operates in a small group so even there were so many other groups, we didnt feel packed. Enough time was given. Pacing was just right. We had a great time and was the unforgettable experience.
Adventure point is owned by Gunnar, a kind Icelander that grew up in the area. He can tell you a lot about the mountains, the glacier and the caves. He has a cool truck and does tours with small groups at times where few other big companies are inside of the cave. Best price for the area. Stop looking further and go for adventure point if you are interested in visite an awesome ice cave and getting some beautiful pictures!
Visiting an ice cave with Gunner from Adventure Point was a memorable experience! I would highly recommend this company. They keep group sizes to 8 people (ours had 6), which makes for a more personal experience in the cave. The timing of the tour was just right, allowing us to visit the cave without crowding from other tourists. I felt safe with Gunner driving the van down the bumpy, winding road. The hike from the van to the ice cave was enjoyable, with gorgeous views of the mountains and glacier. Gunner gave us personal insights into Iceland and was knowledgeable in responding to questions we had. Choose Adventure Point for your Icelandic adventures!
We were so happy about our blue ice cave trip with Adventure point. The 4X4 truck was so reliable and the owner was super friendly. He took his time to explain everything we needed to know. Never felt rush inside the cave. The owner brought all the gears for us even a big LED light to light up inside the cave for our pictures taken. It was such a wonderful experience with Adventure point. I would highly recommend Adventure point to anyone who is looking for a ice cave tour ;)
Gunnar was awesome, and he timed our tour so well. We were going in when several other groups were leaving. And we were leaving just as several other groups were arriving. And our group was alone in the cave for nearly our entire time (while other people we talked to complained about it being crowded). He was also just a really cool dude. The ice cave was really awesome. Definitely worth it and recommended.

Super windy and wasn't crowded. Worth stopping as it's a long the ring road.
Nice view of the glacier from a distance and historic site of the old bridge that was washed out.
The only information that you can find on the place is to not do 4x4 with rented car, after that, the metal pieces do not spoke by themselves. More detail could be welcomes
Skeidara Bridge Monument commemorates the destruction caused by the massive glacial flood (jökulhlaup) that occurred after the eruption of the Vatnajökull volcano in 1996. The twisted sections of the bridge are displayed to show the power of the floodwaters. It’s easy to access from the road and takes just a few minutes to visit, but it leaves a strong impression.
Beautiful and somber location. We didn't realize that this place was a memorial when we first pulled up. To see the power of the landslide that caused all the destruction was hard to comprehend.
This is a neat little monument with some interesting information panels and gorgeous surroundings. It is a leftover piece of a bridge that was part of Iceland's Ring Road. The bridge was destroyed in recent times by glacial flooding, and stands as a testament and warning for the future. Definitely worth the stop on the way to or from Skaftafell.
Cool monument to the destructive powers of flooding. Remnants of the previous bridge made into a sculpture.
Our guide called this the bird bridge art. I don't know if it's art or not or if that is the name of a bird, but I know what I like, and sadly this wasn't it. I think a bit more background on the bridge and what this represents would have made it significantly more interesting. I did enjoy the glacier views though. Great place for a photo stop.
