I spent a week in Palaikastro to try out wing foiling at Gone Surfing towards the end of the season and absolutely loved it! Beautiful bay with reliable and often gusty side-shore wind (perfect conditions to learn). In days with stronger wind there is a bit of chop but it's frankly manageable even for beginners. Nice accommodation options in the two nearby villages, with plenty of very good and reasonably priced tavernas and a few nice minimarkets and shops. Very nice area to explore in case a day is a bit too windy for your skill level. The atmosphere at the station is very relaxed and welcoming. It is really a magic place. Maria and Christos are very competent and clearly love their job, to the point of being truly inspiring. I had just one lesson to start with the foil, after a couple of days practicing with wing and windsurf board, but every day Christos was always ready to give precious tips and correct my mistakes. There is generally a no-nonsense and refreshingly practical approach, with a big focus on safety ...and fun. Few words, right on point, and a smile. They offer a wide range of wing foiling and windsurfing gear in very good conditions for rent, mostly Duotone, Fanatic, Cabrinha, Ion etc. and you can see the care they put into keeping everything neat. There is everything you need to go in the water, including helmets with different fit, vests and various types of wetsuits. Yet, bringing your own wetsuit and protective gear (and maybe a poncho) could also make sense. I will definitely come back!! I'm very happy I chose this spot and I miss everything about it. Meanwhile I'm practicing with longboard, a Unit 4.0 from '23 and thick winter gloves : ]
A True Gem for Windsurfing in Crete Christos and Maria create an incredible atmosphere—always smiling, making everything smooth and fun. Christos may speak less, but every piece of advice he gives is invaluable, a true key to progress. This is the best place in Crete for windsurfing, where the wind is reliable from 7:00 to 24:00—no guessing, no waiting, it’s simply there, always. The equipment is excellent, prices are fair, and I’ve never been to a spot where the wind is guaranteed like this. Beyond just renting high-quality gear, they share passion, joy, and a genuine love for the sport. For me, they embody an old-school spirit—where generosity, helping others, and sharing happiness are at the core of everything they do. Many thanks for this incredible experience! We are looking forward to coming back. Jacques, Sarah, and Alix Take care, and may the wind be with you! 🌊🏄‍♂️
Excellent experience for true surfing. Perfect spot for beginners and advanced surfers. I came with my wife, she learned windsurfing and I did wing and windsurfing We enjoyed every second there Equipment is excellent, both wing and Windsor the spot has side shore with strong wing in the inner part and a place for beginners with lower wind Advise: buy beach chair in the village before 😎 we enjoys the rests between the sessions
⚠️ Warning to fellow windsurfers: avoid this rental! ⚠️ This review is not about the spot itself or the employees on site. It’s about the way the company Gone Surfing is run and how management treats their clients. The owners (Christos and Marie) are constantly stressed, and their main focus seems to be money, not the experience of the surfers who come here. We are a surfing family. We’ve windsurfed all over the world, and what we value most about this community is the shared passion and mutual respect — whether you’re renting gear or running the business. Problems happen everywhere: gear gets damaged, conditions can be tough. That’s normal, and usually people in this sport know how to handle it calmly and constructively. But here it was the opposite. Instead of solutions, we got aggression. Instead of understanding, we were blamed. Management tried to tell us that gear issues were our fault because our level wasn’t “good enough.” This is not only unprofessional but also completely against the spirit of windsurfing. 👉 If you care about respect, community, and a positive atmosphere, do yourself a favor: go somewhere else. Even just 50 meters away, you’ll find a better experience.
I absolutely recommend the Gone windsurfing center ! Christos and Maria are super friendly and professional. They are welcoming and give helpful advices. The gear is great and there's plenty of choice of boards and sails. I always felt safe since they're constantly bay watching. Also, there is plenty of space and seats to chill on the beach (with or without shade). The spot is great for all levels of windsurfers and with a good ratio of days with 15+ knots. And in case of low wind, that's the opportunity to test wing foiling ! Looking forward to coming back to this amazing place !
The owners are absolutely fantastic, and the equipment is top-notch. I had an absolute blast windsurfing there! I’ll definitely be back again!
“Great surf spot with very kind people, top-quality equipment, and fantastic wind. You’ll have a lot of fun here! The motorhome parking area is located right next to the spot.”
One week spent in this wonderful spot to wingfoil and Windsurf… Team is always available to give advices, change gears, rescue you and with the smile always! Very reasonable price for such high quality sails and boards!!!

A bar that combines a large variety of cocktails and beers with a big collection of rock, hard rock and heavy metal music. Add to all above the friendly and exceptional owner and bartender George and the result is this special bar in the east end of Crete called Sticky Minds .
We had a nice evening moment in this bar The boss is very good about beers and advise very well The gin fizz is very good (remember goog memories from the 90’s) Nice place! Music is very good selected by the (dj) boss :-)

Not only does Georges know all the classics, but he will make you discover the hidden gems, the B sides, to give you an unforgettable musical experience. All this in the middle of nowhere, in this wonderful region of western Crete, with its olive trees and magnificent beaches. Correction: Of course Georges....in the East.... George invents a new cocktail every year. We had a lot of fun trying things out, listening to music and chatting. If we ever find ourselves in Crete again, we will definitely go there again. (Translated by Google) A place truly out of the ordinary. Not the usual tourist place, but a real meeting point for locals. Very sophisticated selection of spirits and beers. Extremely competent and friendly owner, great connoisseur of rock music and travel. He will certainly know how to entertain you with a pleasant conversation. The only note is that the music inside is too loud, making it difficult to chat. (Original) Locale davvero fuori dai canoni ordinari. Unica nota, musica all'interno troppi alta, si fa fatica a chiacchierare.

Very nice spot for Intermediate/advanced surfers. Mostly bump and jump, not really flat water, but side offshore (more sideshore, pretty easy to go upwind). The crew is quick and professional with board and sail changes and they know their spot and gear pretty well. All in all a very nice and relaxed experience. The only (negative) difference for me in comparison to other surf stations is the (minimal but noticeable) lack of openness and talkative behaviour. Don't get me wrong, they were all very friendly, but overall it was more a business, than personal atmosphere. But it may have just been the aftermath of a very busy high season. Anyways, happy to experience the Palekastro Valley and freak surf!
Great food, view, vibe and cocktails. Seriously good value too.
Hannes and his guys take care of the business well, guests can feel safe on the water all the time. You make a mistake, loose power, end up in water for longer time, they will take the jet and come to check you out and help if needed. Nice atmosphere, plenty of shadow, good equipment and the excellent beach bar. What else does a windsurfer need? 🙂 The wind conditions can be challenging, a bit gusty which teaches you to be focused and ready. Spot rather for intermediate and advanced windsurfers but beginners will find their place as well.
Thank you very much to everyone from Freak Surf. 12-year-old twin boys fell in love with windsurfing thanks to the friendly and professional team. Teacher Mathieu taught them the basics so well that their mastered even the strongest wind after four lessons. Patience, safety, kindness and lots of laught and games. The happiness and pride in their eyes at the end is a proof that Mathieu is the best teacher :) see you next year! Matej&Teddy&Vanda from Slovakia
Been here 2 years ago, it was just fantastic! The staff is very friendly and always in for a quick chat. Big compliments to the staff, Only in Vass I have met the same kind of kindness in staff, nowhere else and i've been to alot of windsurf rental places. Mid september this year I will be back there, I can't wait! The spot is very nice, good wind and the rental is a few steps away from te water. See you soon! Robbin
Freak surf Crete are awesome!! Good vibes abound. I wanted to go wind foil in kouremenos but was over an hour away in Crete. Aga happily gave me the wind and surface conditions so I didn’t waste time travelling there if the conditions were not right. It was too windy to go during my stay, but I still took a visit just in case. Pablo greeted me on site and gave me a run down of the conditions and the spot and made me feel super welcome and comfortable, even though I ended up not renting. The gear the have looks great too. The team here are amazing and I can’t wait to come back to Crete to try again maybe with better luck! Thanks guys you rock!!
Perfect place to windsurf. Aga and Pablo are so friendly and helpful. Couldn't ask for a better environment for any level of windsurfing. Thank you all!
Freaking great windsurfsurf station at the best Meltemi windsurf spot on Crete. Hannes and his team are doing a really terrific job. Always the latest JP boards and NP sails - top equipment. I'm coming here since 2006 and always enjoy it a lot.

Good vibes and very good drinks 2 big billiard tables available inside Lots of space to sit outside and enjoy crete. Would go there again any time :)
We sat down for coffee and reading on a windy Palaikastro day. The atmosphere in the front garden of the place was very shabby and pessimistic. Our coffee cups were dirty. Coffee wasn't good either. In addition, the other tables, one of which we thought were the owners or employees of the place, were talking abnormally loud. There was also a discussion between the two tables. While all this was going on, they acted selfishly as if there were no other people, we were very uncomfortable. We couldn't read anything. We sat down for a coffee break and got up dejectedly. On my way to the toilet, I saw a nice atmosphere and a pool table in the interior of the place. It can be a nice activity in Paleikastro.
A very nice and relaxing place to have your coffee or a variety of drinks till late at night. The music choices are exceptional and the staff is very friendly
Nice place with music and outside/inside place, though it got pretty boring in the last 2 years
Very nice place for coffee-coctails and billiards..The owner is very ok..Enjoy..!!
Awesome cocktails, great service!

This shop, run by a very nice couple, has a variety of products from Paleikastro and Crete. In addition to food products such as different herbal teas and olive oils, the books including various travel routes about Crete caught our attention. I am sure you will find something that will interest you.
Excellent shop, selling quality Cretan/Greek products, a wide selection of maps/tourist guides and second hand books (in different languages). The owner was helpful, friendly and professional (and fluent in multiple languages). Definitely worth a stop, particularly for any tourists in Lasithi province.
