Loved this place! Brought our kids (8 & 10), so cool. Lots of steps up. So much history. Great for medieval buffs. We parked in free lot at bottom of the hill & walked up through the small village surrounding the castle.
An ABSOLUTELY impressive multi faceted immersive experience!! Not to be missed! The whole castle from room to room offered museum quality examples of weapons armour. A few areas had repeating audiovisual stories about construction of siege equipment, and how to make armour. One area was a theatre. There was a live blacksmith , a person who explained and fired a trebuchet. Another explained weapons use and gave kids some basic sword training using props. Probably the best EVER historic site I’ve been to !! Well worth the money and drive to see!!
Very beautiful castle, especially recommended for a visit with children! In the various exhibition rooms, in addition to the elements on display, there were also small Playmobil exhibitions, so that the children could also enjoy the visit! The castle itself is beautiful, really well preserved and offers phenomenal views of the valley and river in the area. At the end of the visit (small signs help you to navigate everything, even without a guide) you will find a small tower room for children with books about castles, knights and the like, as well as Playmobil toys, where the children can play and read! Really amazing, the kids loved it! The children also loved the costumes that were available in an exhibition room. You could choose something from a range of medieval clothing and then sit on a throne provided and take your photo (free of charge, but you take the photos yourself, of course). A wonderful idea! I would definitely recommend a visit for families, but without a stroller, as you can leave one in a designated area in front of the castle. The only thing I didn't like so much, and that's not the castle's fault, was that in winter only one restaurant was open, the one right next to the castle, and unfortunately they weren't good and a bit expensive for what you get. Otherwise, highly recommended!
A rewarding view and experience for a slightly hard uphill hike. Can drive up, but part of the experience is the walk up! The restaurants around the top are really terrible so I'd suggest either bringing a picnic or going back down to eat.
Very nicely renovated castle, put into a very good state. The self walking tour is fun. Amazing views of the river valley as well.
To me, this is a castle and not a chateau. Therefore don't expect fancy furniture and artwork. However, if you like your medieval weapons, then this is a good place to visit.
Beautiful setting for a castle and well worth the trip, theres some shop's at the site and restaurants will go back again
An excellent castle to view middle ages weapons, and the views are great

15th-century castle, once home of entertainer Josephine Baker, with displays tracing her life.

This Chateau is really worth a visit. It is attractive architecturally. It is made especially attractive by the well currated story of Josephine Bakers' life there, who was quite an amazing woman. It is set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has a great bistro. Basically, it's just a great place to visit.
So loved this beautiful home of Josephine Baker. So much to see. Half hour bird of prey show in the grounds, included in the price. The grounds and house were Spectacular. It was one of my favourite things during my 9 day holiday in France.
A great place to visit. We left inspired by life of Josephine Baker (audio tour in English and thoughtfully arranged) and the beautiful surroundings. Not just a great visit for adults, but also for youngsters. The falconry display was an unexpected highlight of our visit and was enjoyed by all.
Great venue for families and couples. The new cinema telling the story of Josephine Baker is a great addition. The lunch in the restaurant was very reasonable
absolutely lovely experience! the tour was great with audio options in several languages. not too crowded and you could spend as much time in each room as you wanted. very detailed history and descriptions of each room. the gardens were beautiful and so lovely to room. even stayed for the bird show which was so cool, they did a great job showing the birds around to every corner where people were sitting. could easily spend the whole day there, so much to see!!
Get a glimpse of what Josephine Baker was as a person and where she lived. Lots of personal letters, clothing to see to get a imagine of life back in the 30,40's and so on. Not only the chateau is worth the visit but also the garden. It's worth the visit on its own. Beautifully landscapes garden, downside is the owls and falcons being in, what looks to me a small cage. Feels like that shouldn't be a thing in 2025. You do get to see them close by. You probably wouldn't see them in the wild
Loved every second.. a fascinating visit. I could hear Josephine Baker’s singing as we wandered .. The interior has been beautifully curated with authentic touches. The family kitchen was very special 🥰.. An amazing story about a fabulous lady! The ‘Birds of Prey’ exhibition is a bonus!
A simply stunning Chateau, fascinating history, beautiful gardens and fantastic restaurant ❤️ (live bird show thrown in as well😉) The best Chateau we have been in for a looong time, great value as well.👌

We enjoyed the demonstration of preparing the walnuts to make oil along with the presentation about growing walnuts, the orchard and the site for having a picnic. The owners are to be commended for making such a fine business.
Nice to learn the nuts oil making process. You can taste the daily batch at the end.
It was an interesting and engaging museum. We learned a lot and the demonstration area was particularly good. And we bought some walnut oil after trying the various samples.
Learn about the importance of Walnuts to the Dordogne. See Walnut oil being made. Smell and taste the oils before purchase. Walk beneath a beautiful Walnut tree grove. Watch a video about the history of Walnut harvesting in which a pervy old dude sculpts a naked lady from Walnut wood and fondles her buttocks. Experience excellent food in the restaurant if you aren't on a budget.
Pretty museum that talks about their production of walnut oil through both ancient and modern techniques. My favourite part was the Bio walnut oil (right from their plantations and made the old way, has a very toasty flavour) while the museum was alright.
Very educational and lovely staff
Ok so seeing it being milled was fun. Not sure if there was any English language in the museum as we didn't pay the 10 EUR for the privilege. Not disabled friendly as you had to go up and down stairs to visit the museum.
Very interresting. Helpful guide & well presented. Gave good insight to the culture & uses of the walnut tree, & it's products. Definitely a 'must' visit.

Superb service - don’t go anywhere else to hire bikes in this area. Joel really cares about delivering an awesome experience, he really knows about bikes and will gladly help you plan the perfect biking tour in this stunning part of the world. We had an awesome time having booked an ebike, tag along and adult mountain bike the night before. Joel even facilitated our last minute changes and the bikes were great. We’ll be back again before the end of our holiday and probably next year as well!
Joel ROCKED, he delivered the bikes despite inaccurate online maps. He had to go through some rough roads, but stayed with it, WAY more time than he anticipated. And showed up with an incredibly fun and positive attitude... and with two great bikes. I rode the mountain bike on MANY trails and back roads in this area of Dordogne, France (Near Castel-Bezenac - GREAT area for this!), and my wife rode her urban step-through on the more civilized roads when we rode together. Bikes were great, with long battery life and comfortable. Definitely would recommend and will use Bus Bikes again! (Tip: bring a flat kit and ask for a pump on your rental)
A great day out. Well maintained bikes. We visited Daglan, Domme (for lunch) and La Roque (for ice cream). Mostly on paths or quiet roads. There's a good swim spot in the Ceou river to cool off afterwards about a km out of town.
Had a fantastic day hiring a bike from bus bike. They suggest various routes and we did a circular one from Castlenaud to Domme and back, about 30km. Just beautiful. Cycle paths and quiet roads, easy to follow and I loved my classic Cube bike. It was easy to book online, choose the bike and size and pick it up. There's also a beautiful stream near the bike depot to have a refreshing dip in when we got back. Perfect day, would recommend.
Our party of 6 enjoyed hiring mountain bikes from Joel at Bike Bus today. We had a great 25km ride to Domme and back via La Roque Gageac following the excellent App downloaded from the Bike bus web-site. Everything went smoothly and would highly recommend getting in touch with Joel early in your holiday.
We've rented from Bike Bus several times and they've always been brilliant - great gear, super knowledgeable and really friendly. Routes for all abilities and all are both touristy and fun rides, so as the kids have grown we've been more adventurous. Owner is English and a really lovely guy.
Nothing but praise for "Bike Bus - Bike hire - Location de Vélo in Castelnaud"! From the very first moment, we felt truly welcome. The owner greeted us with a big smile and such enthusiasm that it immediately set the tone for a great day. What stood out the most? His warm welcome and the way he really took the time to explain everything clearly. We didn’t just get comfortable bikes — we also got a detailed explanation of the different routes. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed ride along the Dordogne or something a bit more adventurous, he knows the area like and gives advice tailored to your plans. And then there was his dry sense of humour… 😄 While going over the routes, he threw in jokes effortlessly. Not the cheesy kind, but light, witty remarks that made us smile and kept the mood fun. It felt like heading out with a good friend who also happens to be a local biking expert. He even took a photo of us for their website — a fun little moment that made us feel part of the Bike Bus story. In short: highly recommended for anyone looking for quality, service, and a warm, personal touch. Thanks for a fantastic day!
This is the best bike rental I've seen. Online booking was easy and smooth, and Joel was extremely welcoming! He has 25 years of experience doing this, and it is clearly showing. He has has plenty of bike options for kids. We were traveling with 2 kids (6 and 9) and all their needs were perfectly met. The rental is just by the bike trail (and actually predates the trail!) which takes you to Dalan. The route is pretty smooth and picturesque with few short hills going up and down, and it goes through couple of small villages. Dalan also is perfect option for a picnic, or a lunch stop. Part of the path is a shared local road so you may meet a car or two, but everyone drives very cautiously. There are also couple of places where you can swim on the way.

A spectacular early morning flight over the Dordogne. Our pilot, Marcus, was skilled and experienced so we were in good hands. We rose gently to 1500m before he brought us down softly in a field of recently planted maize without damaging the crop. An experience I'd highly recommend.
The experience of being in the air was exceptional. We were lucky and had a picture perfect day. The view of chateaus, the river, farms and the many historic houses makes it a fantastic place to go hot air ballooning. It is expensive but very memorable. That said here are a couple of things that could have made it even better. When we arrived at the meeting spot there were a bunch of people there. Some other guests and a bunch of the hot air balloon team. I asked where Thibault (the owner who I talked on the phone with) was so we could check in. He was standing with a group of his staff. I approached and asked where Thibault was - expecting to get a nice warm welcome. Instead he said, I am Thibault, you need to go over there to check in. I am in the hospitality business for 35 years. That’s not the welcome the owner of the company should give (not a good example for his employees either). We went to the area where he suggested and there was a lovely and sweet young woman there named Pia. She welcomed us with a big smile and took our payment. We then learned we would be in group not by ourselves. No big deal but it was never made clear to us. We went to the area with a group of 6 others were standing and Maria the pilot gave us safety instructions. She was very nice and spoke perfect French, English and Russian. She heard my wife speaking Russian on the phone as she approached the group and greeted her in Russian. We drove to a field around the corner. Seeing them methodically fill up the balloons was fantastic and the anticipation was exciting. One improvement would be to have the various people introduce themselves and where they are from, maybe a conversation starter like what are is a favorite activity you most enjoy…. That way you would feel slightly connected during the hour you are all standing next to each other on the balloon ride. It would enrich the experience - which benefits the guests and the way they feel about the company. We climbed aboard and gently took off. My wife is not good with heights but she felt safe and had a great time. Our son was excited but got a little board after the first 30 minutes. We drifted for a good long time as Maria expertly guided us gently up and down to catch various breezes that took the balloon precisely where she wanted to go. She gave just the right amount of commentary, pointing out various chateaus etc as we floated along. The stunning views and feeling of floating were exceptional. We landed in a large field, helped the team deflate the balloon slowly and roll up into its container and onto the truck. It was fun to help but definitely not mandatory. A cool part of the experience. Afterwards Pia invited us to have sparkling cider, apple juice and fresh walnuts. It was a nice touch. We got into the vans and were taken back 20 minutes to our car. We highly recommend the experience. We would give it a 4.5 but only 4 OR 5 are options on this site.
A truly magical moment, floating gracefully above the stunning landscapes and châteaux of the Dordogne. Thank you to Thibault and the entire team for your professionalism and warm, friendly welcome from the beginning to the end. Excellent communication regarding the organisation and weather conditions that could affect our flight and briefing about the flight. You truly turned a special experience into an unforgettable one. Highly recommended.
Amazing experience both low and high over the beautiful Dordogne valley. Was really interesting to be part of the whole ride, from unpacking and inflating the balloon, the ride itself and landing/packing up. Was about 3 hours in all and we opted for the picnic breakfast with the crew by the Dordogne river after the flight. Package included photos taken by the team of the flight. Marcus (pilot) and Gaylord (ground crew) were really welcoming and made the whole experience feel friendly, professional and safe at all times. Can't recommend enough.
Unforgettable experience ! Both our pilot Marcus and Laurent were the most welcoming and kind hearted people you could possibly imagine. A must if you are visiting the area !
We had a fantastic flight on a beautiful early morning in late July. There were 5 balloons of Montgolfieres and a further 6 of other companies, it was a great sight. Tha landing was so gentle and smooth. I would recommend this team all day long.🫠
My husband and I hade a fabulous flight experience 3rd time lucky as the weather was against us twice. The staff were great, really helpful particularly regarding the booking rearrangements. The actual flight was superb, our pilot Alex made sure we got the most for our hour in the air, and his ground support couldn't have been nicer. Would thoroughly recommend this balloon company.
A truly magical experience with a friendly but highly professional team. Great communication before, during & after our flight. A treasured memory for us that was worth every penny.

Excellent service. The shuttle bus, the equipment, the staff, all good. Lovely journey down the river from Vitrac back to Castelnaud.
The owner is very friendly ! It's a beautiful experience.
We hired canoes and padeled 5km downstream, before taking a bus back (they leave every hour so very easy). Stunning scenery and good prices. Do not miss this.
Very nice people and good equipment. We kayaked from vitrac back to castelnaud. With 3 children (8-8-11 y) it was not to long. Just bring enough water and snacks. Have a few stops for a picknick or a swim. We reached castelnaud after 3.5 hours.
Reasonably priced. Arrangements seemed a little unorganised. You took all the gear you were given onto a coach. It all got mixed up, then no one got the right stuff back when you were dropped off. When we were picked up we were all squeezed onto a tiny mini bus, oars and all. Apart from that a gun daddy on the water!
Fantastic canoe down the Dordogne today. We are a family of four so hired two 2-man canoes from Vitrac to Castelnaud. It's a 10km stretch that is supposed to take 2 hours but we stopped at a giant tree jump and again at Domme. We also took it very leisurely so it took us 4.5 hours but made for a lovely afternoon :)
Lovely canoe trip, with bonus tree jump half way. Beautiful views of several Chateau and Domme Town.
Worth a visit just for the views. And if you are interested in the history then it will be one of the best days out on your holiday

Did the 16 km trip from Vitrac to Beynac. Easy 3h with a picnic stop. Helpful staff conversant in English. Good equipment. Recommend the standard single ended paddles rather than double-ended kayak style as the latter don't have cuffs to keep water from leaking on you and in the canoe. A wonderful experience.
Easy to find, plenty of parking, friendly staff and a large canoe between two of us €40 for a 12km trip down river. We were supplied with buoancy aids and a dry box for phones etc. I can't say whether the river conditions were typical but its a wide, fairly shallow river that felt safe so definitely a family activity. We were lucky with the weather being high twenties in early Aoril and the river was very quiet. The current takes you downstream at what felt like a fast walking pace so all you have to do is steer, something you pick up quite quickly. You can take a picnic to have somewhere on the riverbank or stop at a village for lunch. If like us you decide to stop at La Roque Gageac, approach on the right hand side and just before the timber jetty where the larger tour boats dock, there is a small beach which is easy to miss. After lunch we continued to Castlenaud where we left the canoe and got a lift back in the companies minibus. We could have booked to go another 4km to Beynac et Cazenac but I think we timed it about right, a little over two hours in the cannoe and an hour for lunch.
What a great way to view the towns and chateaus along the river. Highly recommend. Kayaks are stable. I found that having kayak experience and being comfortable padding was a good thing! You go with the current, but when the wind is strong one is still required to paddle fairly strongly.
Very well run, with an efficient check-in process and bus transfer to the starting location. Everyone we dealt with spoke English as well as French. The 16km ride is lovely, not too tiring, but I would recommend you request a boat with a back rest. Not having one was my only regret for the day. The water is refreshing and there are plenty of places to stop along the way.
Friendly service. Clear instructions in French and English! The short bus ride to the departure was pleasant and gave us an idea what to expect. The gear was up to date and safe. The river was nice and relaxed. We took the advice of the staff and enjoyed ourselves at a nice stop with a good view !!
Very slick process. They give you a lifevest, a waterproof tub for valuables, picnics, and dry clothes, a paddle, and a canoe. The river is then yours to explore, safe in the knowledge you don't have to paddle back. The scenery is amazing!
An amazing afternoon spent kayaking down the river. Great value for money if you consider the duration and return transport.
Loved it. We had a fantastic day! Thank you. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the scenery wow! out of this world, one of the highlights of our family holiday.
