Had a lovely visit to the distillery, with a tour followed by a tasting of the malts. Tour was by Duncan, a true gentleman and very knowledgeable about whisky, also gave some great insights into what makes Caol Ila truly unique. And what a view from the tasting area!
Our visit to Coal Ila distillery was not scheduled as part of our tour so it was more of a brief stop on our way north to Bunnahabhain. As a result, although we did get a dram for visiting, we didn't get to see the production floor or have a tour. If I ever do the Scottish Routes tour of Islay again, then I hope to choose a tour where more time can be spent at Caol Ila. The drink itself is one of my favorites as it has a distinctive (lighter?) flavor profile I cant quite describe. The distillery has a nice bit of landscaping around the back where a stream trickles down a slight slope, possibly from where they take their water for distilling.
We were unaware that Caol Isla is the base for JW, as it stands beautifully on its own. Gorgeous distillery, great bar & coffee/ espresso for the driver. Lovely whisky. 🥃. A very short drive from the ferry. If you spend a bit on the whiskey, you can have your bottle engraved as a keepsake. We did. Great memories. If you love whiskey, do not miss.
Beautifully presented visitors centre with stunning coastal views. We had the chocolate and whisky pairing experience which was a fun alternative to any of the other distillery tours we'd done over the weekend. It was silent season so tour options were limited. The only disappointment was that we'd been able to book a full tour months ago, only to have the booking cancelled with a few weeks' notice. It seemed avaoidable considering silent season (I assume) is planned well in advance.
Beautiful premises and a very modern store with a well stocked bar. However, overall more a Johnny Walker than a Carol Ila experience. Missed the personal touch.
We did the Spirit of Smoke: Cask Draw & Tasting Experience with Phoebe. It was fantastic! Such detail and ability to tailor the conversation to your interests. It was super unique to be in the cask house and also be able to draw a dram from the barrel. Phoebe did an amazing job guiding us through the nuances of the flavors and answering all of our many questions. It really was a special, unique and personal experience.
Breathtakingly-beautiful, and also the largest distillery on Islay! Sister distillery of Port Ellen and Lagavulin but has a very smooth and unique aroma (less peaty, more floral). We enjoyed a welcome dram of their latest special release for the island's upcoming Jazz Festival, which was released just 2 days ago! What a treat! As always, it is smooth, bold and makes me want to hold my breath so that I can enjoy that long finish and bouquet just a little longer as the whisky wakes up all my taste buds and olfactory facilities <3 The distillery has a very welcoming cafe and we saw large tasting areas facing humongous bay windows to soak up both the whisky AND the view of the bay. Highly recommended!
Good distillery on amazing location. We had the "closed stills" tour, but despite that, the tour guide, Sarah, was good at showing us the history, processes and flavours of the whisky. Amazing view during the tasting. Spacious whisky bar and visitor centre, with a machine to engrave your own bottle for a charge (excellent for gifts!). Things that I did not like: how much they push the "Johnny Walker" brand, both in visuals and during the tour; 3 malts to taste, but no choice; the warehouse is just for show; and of course, a tour of a closed distillery at ordinary price (the tour could have included a walk to the exterior of the still house at least).

The distillery is impressive, set in a stunning location. We chose the Warehouse 9 tasting experience, which was exceptional. Our tour guide, Kyle, was engaging and entertaining. The staff at the visitor Centre were also very helpful.
After the 4 mile single track road the views are fabulous. The whole set up of the distillery and facilities is very friendly as are all the staff. We took the WH9 tasting tour and Tilly, our guide was very knowledgeable and spoke for just the right amount of time. We were able to sample 4 excellent drams. There were only 5 on the tasting. Very enjoyable
We had a great experience on the Warehouse No. 9 tour! Mark was fantastic, knowledgeable, and engaging. The facility was clean and tidy. The store was a bit overpriced but we got a small discount for going on a tour. The distillery is located several miles down a single lane road so not really accessible by foot or public transit.
We had such a wonderful experience here! The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making us feel welcome right away. The distillery and its surroundings are absolutely beautiful. What stood out most was how personalized the visit felt. They really tailored everything to our knowledge and preferences and took plenty of time to answer all of our questions in detail. The whisky tasting was the highlight, highly recommended!
Absolutely must-visit distillery if you're looking for phenomenal whisky with real conversation in an absolutely gorgeous setting. They have a wide range of whiskies behind the bar, and you can have a dram standing on the deck looking at the waves and Paps of Jura in the distance. The people working here clearly care about good, authentic conversation and fantastic whisky -- it feels like you're reconnecting with friends, not getting sold on buying bottles. Huge shoutout to Mark!! I don't want to play favorites, but I visited 6 distilleries and this one is top of my list to return to.
Stunning scenery. One of, if not the best setting we've experienced visiting a distillery (and we've been to a lot!) We had a great tour. It was a quiet day so just the two of us on our slot which resulted in a great opportunity to ask many questions. Kyle was friendly and knowledgeable. Only downside was the absence of a glass and distillery discount offered at the end of the tour by many other distilleries. Overall we give it 4.5 stars and would definitely go back as well as recommend to others.
A hidden gem and absolute highlight on our Islay tour. Super welcoming and personal experience in their store. I had paid tours that weren't half as interesting and knowledgeable than the conversation over our welcome drams at the Bunnahabhain store.
We had an awesome experience here. Ariana was amazing. She answered all our questions. Let us try some drams we’ve never had before. And we loved them. It’s such a beautiful location. Don’t miss this gem on Islay!

They have beautiful items to buy or you can paint your own. We had a great time making our own and will collect in a couple of days. A great way to remember our visit.
Very nice little store. Bought a butter dish. Worth a stop if you're into a pottery collection
We visited Persabus Pottery as part of a visit to Islay. There we met with Rosemary who runs the place. She has done a lot of different work over the years and during lockdown came up with Ceramics in a box where you can buy the box with the essentials inside to create your own Pottery, inspired by the surroundings on the island. You can then drop them off eith Rosemary and she will have them burnt to use. Great idea and our kids loved it.
We visited this wonderful pottery whilst on holiday. The potter makes beautiful pottery and was very informative about all aspects of pottery and Islay life. Her husband was equally friendly and made a brilliant job of packing up our purchases safely for our journey home. So glad we visited and will definitely return.
We were headed to a local distillery and stopped here for tea and sandwiches! So glad we did! Simple food but tasted amazing and exactly what we needed. The owner was very friendly and attentive, even with a pottery painting class going on! Highly suggest you stop and get a bite to eat on your way through.
Just close to Port Askaig this little pottery is a nice opportunity to spend time before taking the ferry. You can paint on ceramics, this is really nice for kids. The parents can relax in the cafe, which has 2-3 tables.
We had a fabulous time decorating our pottery ,so pleased with the results. This was our second visit and will definitely come back again Highly recommended
Fun for all ages and lovely home baking
