We had a guided tour. We needed to wait for our turn for the guided tour at 6 pm. The other guided tour was at 5 pm. The tour guide was very friendly and explained very well about the castle in Spanish ( i don't think she could talk in English though). Posters are written in Spanish only. It costs €4 and €2( for pensioners and unemployed [need to show some ID for that]) to get in.
Very old and important archeaological site for our European history. Site is not always open to visit. Check entrance or call the number on the gate to enter.
We came to have a look outside the castle after having lunch in the town and go for a walk but it's fenced in and not clearly marked on Google or with signs where to go to park. They said tickets were 4€ each whether you take a guided tour or not. Considering COVID is still rife, we thought you should have the choice of paying for a guided tour or a lesser fee to just do your own thing. We'll go back on a quieter day maybe.
Calatrava, the name was taken from Arabic “Calaat Rabah”. Alcalá = The fortress. This makes it the fortress of Rabah. So much history behind those walls.
A wonderful place filled with history. Natural and green place. Wonderful to spend time with family and kids.
Really interesting castle which was the birthplace of the Calatrava order. Sounds to be a similar set up to the Knights Templar.

(Translated by Google) This religious building dates from the late 15th century and early 16th century. It houses a single large nave composed of two clearly differentiated parts, the first with a Gothic layout in the presbytery and chancel with a dodecagonal apse in its vault and the second with a half-barrel vault with lunettes. Inside is the image of Our Lady of the Martyrs belonging to the 12th century and a transition from Romanesque to Gothic in polychrome alabaster. The carving of the Crucified Christ; "The Christ of Forgiveness", made of wood, is another of the sculptures inside the temple in which remains of 16th century mural paintings and a polychrome Franciscan cross are also preserved. Before covering the walls with plaster, I had mural paintings on the walls.
