Dark-sand beach known for its volcanic rocks & natural pools, popular for surfing & sunset watching.

We came here for the sunset and we don't regret it at all. It is not a large beach, but it is large enough for a walk or jog. The fine black volcanic sand is perfect for such walks. As for sunsets, I definitely recommend it if the weather is fine. These rocks in the water blend in perfectly with the sunset.
This beach was simply amazing. Such a beautiful colour, perfect sand, nice landscape, big waves, clean, calm, also enjoying a coffee, juice and some sweets was the only thing we needed.
Absolutely beautiful black sand beach. Sheer cliffs. Deep blue water and big, Atlantic waves, outcrops of rocks… this is extremely scenic…. And was even more incredible doing so completely isolated. There are a few other notable vistas nearby but I think most people miss this one. Really enjoyable.
Amazing beach, with very nice views on the soroundings.
Amazing beach, it's pretty small but stunning. There are bathrooms, changing rooms and showers outside.
Beautiful small beach with parking nearby. Showers and restrooms available directly at the beach. Great view on the islands
Beautiful beach, lot of parking places and good services (dressing rooms, wc, ice cream van, cafeteria).
This is one of the nicest towns that I visited during our visit to the island. Getting into the water was kind of rough, waves were strong with steep down. But, once you get in the water was nice. The panoramic view of the town and fields was fantastic just up the road are gorgeous to behold. Very recommended place since the island does not have too many beach options.

Thermal baths
Scenic spot
Natural thermal-water pool along the ocean, reachable via a climb over basalt rocks & a ladder.

Very nice pools heated by thermal sources. We went mid-tides and had the perfect mix of warm and cool water. Big free car park next to the (currently closed) Spa. Then 5 minutes walk down to the rock pools.
Great coast line view, with plenty of walks. The highlight of course is the natural thermal bath in the ocean, open to the public for free. This in our opinion was the nicest of the all the thermal bath experiences on the island… a must visit! Plenty of free parking, and if you arrive a little later in the morning there’s a van serving food and drinks. The key however is to arrive pretty early if you can, we got here between 9 and 9:30 and it was great but 30-45 minutes later it was very busy!
Incredible swimming hole that is naturally thermally heated, with cooler ocean water being swept in by waves. We came at low tide which is probably best. No entry fee. There’s a fairly large parking lot at the bottom of the hill. There are public toilets and changing rooms although not sufficient for the demand.
It was nice to swim a little in this natural pool at 35 degrees. But beware of the road after the first parking. Rocks can fall down here. If we left 30 seconds earlier, we wouldn't be here. Our car was stuck 24 hours down there.
Beautiful natural thermal pool which you can bath in. We were there at low tide and had a great time. There is a solid, sturdy ladder to climb down into the water and ropes to hold on to. Highly recommend to wear bathing shoes as the rocks are quite rough.
Amazing landscape. A nice place to admire the ocean and the wild of the vulcano roca. The road is not open to the parking down to the termal pool but you can walk like 10 minutes. It was windy day but we enjoyed
This place was magical The idea of having a thermal bath in the middle of the ocean is mind blowing I brought my beach water shoes would advise you to do the same because it’s very rocky, slippery and not even There is a ladder and lifeguards And a rope inside the water to help you stay in place ( the waves are very strong) The water temperature is warm not in the ladder area but closer to the rocks There is public changing rooms and toilets but they’re very very dirty
Check the tide levels before you go. We went on a Sunday morning after it had rained. Road access to the lower parking lot was blocked off (likely to the high winds and rain from the night before). We unfortunately only wore flip flops, and could not make the steep hike down to the water. It looked like it could be a 20 minute walk down.

They had to cancel the first reservation we made because of heavy winds and too high waves but were very transparent on this from the morning and informed us early enough around noon for our afternoon trip. They offered a new trip 2-3 days later. When we finally went, it was awesome. We saw four sperm whales, three beaked whales and five groups of dolphins (two different kinds). Excellent trip. Strong recommendation.
If you’re in the island of Sao Miguel and thinking about a whale-watching tour, stop thinking—just book with Beatriz and the team at Terra do Pico. This was, hands down, one of the most memorable days of our trip. From the very first briefing, we felt in expert hands. The team’s respect for the animals and their deep knowledge of the Azorean ecosystem were obvious. We didn’t just see wildlife—we understood it. Dolphins playing around the boat, majestic whales surfacing nearby… It felt like we were guests in their world. What made the experience truly special was how much we learned—not just about the animals, but also about the dramatic geological history that shaped these islands. The guides are natural storytellers and scientists at heart. If you want more than a simple boat ride—if you want to leave with wide eyes and a head full of wonder—this is the tour for you.
Amazing!!! Very friendly staff and knowledgeable that will run the extra mile to take you were the whales or dolphins are. Only operation going out from Mosteiros with a small setting but very good conditions. The boat tour is unique in this side of the island and it worth the value just by itself. If your not looking for a rushed crouded whale watching operation tour this is the one to get 😉
My husband booked whale watching with this company and he had a great time. He says about the trip: “The boat was comfortable and felt very safe. Beatrice kept us well informed, but she didn’t over do the commentary. We saw a turtle, a squid and many dolphins, but the highlight was seeing the hump backed whale. The whole trip took 2.5 hours and was worth every penny (€60)
Amazing experience! The ride was fun and safe and we got to see: dolphins, whales and even a Tortuga. Our guide was knowledgeable. Would do again!
It was truly a great experience. We saw two types of dolphins, whales, and even whale cubs — there were many whales overall. The team was very professional, and the density of sightings was exceptionally high.
The experience was amazing! The staff were very friendly and made sure our experience was all it could be. The views are spectacular! Highly recommended 👌
Really Amazing If you want a tour with a strong team with a Human touch were you have the owners on board making sure you have the best time of your experience then look no further. We have done a previous tour on the busy side of the island in a boat that looked like a Bus.Good but just that. Here is the opposite, great boat but small group, great views of the sperm whales and two diferente species of dolphins. Amazing. Fantastic skipper and guides explained all about behavior and interesting facts. Loved it. I’ll be back soon. Thanks
