The church is beautiful and has an amazing history. However it is not open as you would expect, you need to ask for it to be open. We were lucky to find someone who contacted the guide, but I would suggest to go to the city hall for assistance if there isn't anyone. The guide we had was incredible and related all the history of the church, from when it was built to the war against the napoleonian army and why they had to change the orientation of the church. Therr is also a little museum, targeting children, that also relates the roman history of the place.
Located on the Plaza Mayor in Sasamon. Open after 1600hrs. On request if not actually open on arrival...or even at the designated time...by calling the number listed on the notice by the main entrance. Large and imposing but not to my taste. I much prefer the smaller more human scale of churches in the smaller villages and towns. But if you are into vast cold austere edifices full of huge religious artifacts then this ìs for you. Went actually to see its cloisters. They ARE worth the time and effort. As is the friendly Hostal Casa Gloria. A lovely view of the church and the Plaza while cooling down over a beer. We drove from Castrojeriz...much more worthwhile visiting, incidentally...and the landscape in May, was a delight.

(Translated by Google) A total discovery in the province of Burgos!!! It has a Gothic exterior that, due to its grandeur and level of detail alone, was worth stopping by to observe. We were lucky that you can visit it by calling the telephone displayed on the main door of the church and after waiting a short while a very nice lady appeared and opened the door for us and even after paying the modest amount of €2.50, she guided us through the entire church telling us its history with dates and data that it was evident that she knew perfectly in every detail. Without a doubt, a church that if you are a lover of art history you cannot miss in any way, the only negative thing was the slightly neglected state in which it was located since something that we do not understand is that monuments like this are not given more visibility by the city council since from the highway they do not even put any announcement that it is there (Original) Un total descubrimiento en la provincia de Burgos!!!

In its day it was the Cathedral of the bishopric of Burgos-Sasamón (Original) Iglesia que impresiona para este pequeño pueblo de Sasamon , con un precioso claustro de arquitectura gótica , que merece mucho la pena ver. (Translated by Google) Church of Santa María la Real de Sasamón (Asset of Cultural Interest). It is a Gothic style temple, the third largest in the province of Burgos after the Burgos Cathedral and the Church of the Assumption of Melgar de Fernamental. Lolo was our guide during the visit to this beautiful work of art and its incredible history. Their explanations were extensive, full of content and historical data combined with the characteristics of elements in the construction as well as the ornamental artistic details of the interior and the cloister, we were not left with the slightest doubt of the artistic wealth that exists there, both in its altarpieces, capitals, vaults, the Renaissance baptismal font, the baroque organ, its wonderful Gothic pulpit and the countless masterpieces of imagery. The visit to the Gothic cloister, of great wealth and elaborate architecture, was spectacular... We visited Paradise where the souls of those who were illustrious people in the history of Sasamón rest. Under our feet also lay people from the town's past, these without ranks of nobility, coming to the conclusion that the entire quadrangular floor of the Cloister was a necroprolis. In this space, there are also exhibits provided by the people of Segisamon, found when digging in the field for cultivation, resulting, among others, in the remains of pipes built to channel water from the highest orographic parts. These are remains of Roman constructions, let's not forget that under all the current construction and its history another part of history is perpetuated... that of the Roman settlement of the city "Segisama Julia" S.I (BC) Sasamón with its history is worth living and remembering with the greatness of its splendor, construction and reconstruction. Thank you, Lolo, for your knowledge and generosity in helping us discover everything that the great "Cathedral" of Santa María La Real de Sasamón houses. Visita TOTALMENTE RECOMENDABLE

(Translated by Google) The experience at Sasamon Church was simply amazing. Immersing yourself in its Romanesque architecture with Gothic touches is like taking a step back in time. Every detail, from the round arches to the sculpted reliefs, tells a story rich in craftsmanship. The atmosphere that surrounds the church evokes a feeling of reverence and admiration. If you are lucky enough to have Lolo accompany you on your visit, you will enjoy a guided tour worthy of the best museums in the country. Not only does he tell the history of the church (which became a cathedral) with incredible passion and knowledge, but you can also perceive the passion and affection that he puts into it when he visits it. Definitely a visit that I would recommend to any lover of history, art and architecture. An unforgettable experience!
