I love this site, one of my favorites. There is a special feeling about the location, and to learn about the magnificent history was fascinating.
It had to be an impressive templar compound back then. Today is mostly ruins and scattered pieces of temples all over the place. All is silence, as it must be in a location of mysteries... At least the surrounding are still wild and none though to implant in such a place refineries, as they did in Eleusis (today Eleusina).
Quick to reach and very accesible, it consists of the open area sights and the museum. To enter both, a 10€ ticket is needed. The museum has quite a few items on display found in that zone, consisting of coins, lanterns, statuettes and many others, and also explaining the history of a lot of things around the area regarding these ancient times. Nice to take a look, but nothing too fancy, but pretty ok! The outdoors area which consists of these ancient columns, amphitheaters, a necropolis, and many other things which are nice to check. But the navigation inside this place is awful. No clear navigators, the maps are fading and you can get lost pretty easily. Some roads lead nowhere while the map shows a clear path. Great potential, but no maintenance to achieve it. Worth a visit definitely to fill the day.
A very beautiful archeological site to visit. The price was 3 euro for one adult, you get a ticket and a mini map that you can use to get around the place. If you really want to enjoy the visit, you should consider about two hours to fully explore the entire site. You can park down the road or you can get to the archaeological museum and park your car there, it's closer to the entrance. Also there is a no dogs allowed policy, they have small cages at the entrance where you can leave your doggy safely.
Nice archaeological site, with a small museum. Very organized, good collection with a lot of info. Sufficient parking near the main road. There's also a parking near the museum, from a back unpaved road, but you'll miss the alley in the woods.
Great site! Impressive! Entrance costs 3€ per person, dogs are not allowed. Must see if you love history and archeology. Museum is scheduled to re-open after 5 years of reconstruction, in July 2024
The Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothrace is one of the most important religious centers of the ancient Greek world. Dedicated to the mysterious Kabeiroi deities, it was renowned for the Samothracian Mysteries—initiations that promised protection at sea and a blessed afterlife. Unlike the Eleusinian Mysteries, these rites were open to everyone, regardless of gender, age, or social status, which made the sanctuary a truly inclusive place of worship. Many notable figures, including Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, are believed to have been initiated here. The site is also where the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered, a masterpiece now displayed in the Louvre. Exploring the ruins, you walk through layers of history, ritual, and spirituality that shaped the ancient Aegean world.
Great historical site, easy walk to the temple.
