Great museum, immersive exhibits, so many artifacts excellently presented. A bit light on interpretive signs in some of the buildings, but the artifacts are presented so engagingly I didn't mind. We went with a group and received a herring salting demo and some herring samples; the demo was a wonderful way to appreciate the work of the herring girls.
Amazing and very informative museum - you can find all the info on the herring industry, it's history in Siglufjordur, you can see the machines used, the boats, the nets, how they used to be made... I mean, really everything. In three buildings. Awesome. And do t forget to go to the fourth building - restaurant with delicious food.
Terrific museum with many real life objects displaying what life people were living in the herring era. The price also includes the boat house and the folk music museums, both of which similar quality to the main one. Also very decent WCs. Highly recommend.
Full transparency: I wasn't interested in learning about Herring however, I was absolutely amazed and enthralled by the history and industry Siglufjordur built around catching, preparing and shipping Herring around the world! There are three buildings you get to visit to see where all the hard work and sleeping courters (for the women) are. Here's a pro tip: in the 1st building where you purchase the tickets go up the front steps and to the right is a room with a video in English that explains everything you need to know before you continue on in your journey to learn all about how important Herring was to Siglufjordur. I promise it will make the whole experience enjoyable and easier to understand how the other buildings connect to the story. I highly recommend this museum to everyone.
Enjoyed the guide's talk. The way the house was set up it was also very engaging. I felt like I could have been one of the ladies who stayed there!
Neat museum sprawling across multiple buildings that would have been part of the "process" during the boom in herring fishing and processing in the early 1900s. You can board a boat, learn about the factory, and even educate yourself on the lives of those that worked in this community at that time.
What a great museum! Excellent display, beautifully made. Very interesting and super informative. Top recommendation!
Wasnt sure it would be interesting. I was wrong. The Guide at the Museum was wonderful. She was knowledgable, engaging, and very nice. The first bldg was the home of Herring Girls. The second bldg was set up with a fishing boat and all the tools, machines, and set up of the Herring intake from the ship. We had a great tasting of herring done two ways and a sample of Iceland liquor.
