Our family went on the E-bike easy mountain adventure along the French Broad River into Tennessee. We had so much fun, and the scenery was beautiful, like a postcard! Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and patient with our group and made the trip so pleasant. I highly recommend this adventure, and we will definitely be returning in the future.
What an amazing team dynamic with all of the instructors and staff. I went with a party of 6 and everyone had a great time as first timers with White Water Rafting. Our raft guide Sam made our experience top notch by giving us humor, great connection with communication and challenging our group with different skills on the water. You will be entertained from start to finish for sure! Loved how detailed the staff were when explaining the safety rules because it really prepared us to feel comfortable and confident when entering the raft. Would like to say thank you to the whole staff for providing an amazing time to us Florida Boys and giving us another reason to visit Marshall, NC!
GREAT half day white water rafting trip last weekend for my sister’s bachelorette! We were a group of 9 and our guides, Pete and Kerrie, were both amazing! They were knowledgeable, skilled, and kept us entertained throughout the whole trip! Some of us were more nervous than others but we all felt safe and had loads of fun! We would definitely do this trip (or the whole day trip) again!!
My daughter and I had a blast Ziplining with TJ and Avahni! Very fun, knowledgeable, safe and personable experience. Thank you so very much for helping to make our mother daughter trip memorable!
BOOK IT! My fiancé and I were debating on which company to go with for my first time white water rafting and I’m so glad that we chose them. Let’s just say I am a 33 year old woman and was nervous all day. But the moment we got on the water I could not stop smiling. Rob was an amazing guide! I feel like he made the experience even more amazing. He was very knowledgeable and gave us tips on what to do and not to do. We also had such a great group! He had us to a few tricks like rock spins and a splat rock! I never thought I’d be doing tricks my first time. We booked the 4 hour and I immediate regretted not choosing the full day tour. Next time we are definitely doing a full day. New hobby unlocked! Also I have to mention, Amy our bus driver was a champ and John did a great job keeping us entertained on our 20 minute bus ride with all of his dad jokes. Amazing! All the tour guides were so nice and friendly. I also loved how they took pictures! I know some companies do not.
What a fun day ebiking along the French Broad River through Pisagh National Forest in NC to Painted Creek through Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee. You pass wild turkey, cruise along the river, see waterfalls galore, dip in a swimming hole and more. The bikes are comfortable and easy to use. The guides, Amy & Mike accommodate all riding levels. You go at your own pace. This outfit has their act together. The site is simple, informative for payment, directions, FAQ, etc. They have your bike, helmet and optional backpack ready. You show up, put on helmet, get on bike and ride. Amy & Mike are professional, knowledgeable, skilled, engaging, fun, personable and helpful. They also offer rafting, canyoneering/rappelling, ziplining and wall climbs. Check them out. Strongly recommend
My white water rafting half day trip was wonderful. I'd had an equally great zip lining experience a few years ago with this company and they excelled again on this trip. All the staff were helpful & knowledgeable and eager to share their love of the area. Our experienced guide John took care to make it a fun & safe trip and was a wealth of info about the river, the environment and history. The two photographers who kayaked ahead were also great and knew just where to position for great pictures. I'll be taking another adventure with this company whenever I'm back in the area!
Our family did a half day rafting trip with John on Tuesday. We had a great time seeing the sights, learning about the amazing river and bouncing around and off the rocks. John is a great guy and kept us all in the boat. We enjoyed hanging out with him and his entertainment on the bus was A+. My kids are begging for more and want to come back earlier in the year when the river is at its peak.

We had an absolutely amazing time at Sandy Bottoms Horseback Riding! The booking process was super easy, and as soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the kindest staff and had zero wait time — we were getting ready to saddle up right away. The views along the trail were breathtaking — like something out of a postcard. Our tour guide was incredible: friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel so at ease throughout the whole ride. Everyone there made us feel so welcome. It was truly a peaceful, scenic, and fun experience. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!
Our family had a great ride! We took an hour long trip on the trail that felt longer than an hour because we had so much fun! We were grouped with another family which gave us an opportunity to meet some new people and learn about the area (they were locals) . It was a fun and safe adventure for all of us despite having no riding experience. We had great guides that gave us plenty of guidance and the views were gorgeous. The trail offered plenty of shady breaks as the horses climbed to the top of the hills which was just what we needed to keep the ride comfortable on a hot summer day.. I would highly recommend Sandy Bottom Trail Rides! The horses were gentle and all of the staff made us feel welcome, even though we had never ridden before.
We visited with guests from out of town (experienced equestrians) and we all thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, hospitality and time with the horses that were well taken care of. Brian, our guide, was amazing! He was professional and kind, making sure we were comfortable with the horses on the two hour trail ride. This family run operation is really great. Don’t miss this place! And then go to the town of Marshall for a meal.
My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Sandy Bottom Trails! Our tour guide, Sal, and one of the ranch hands, Norman, were incredibly accommodating, knowledgeable, and friendly. My husband booked us a private, hour-long trail ride, and it turned out to be one of the most romantic experiences we’ve ever had. The views along the trail were absolutely top-tier — easily the best we’ve seen compared to other horseback riding excursions we’ve done. I felt completely safe throughout the ride, thanks to the professionalism of the staff. Sal even took so many incredible photos of us along the way, making the memories even more special. After the ride, my husband had the great idea to bring apples, which we diced up and fed to the horses at the stable. The horses were so sweet and gentle, and it was such a joyful ending to the perfect day. Thank you, Sandy Bottom Trails, for such a memorable and heartwarming experience!
My wife and I had the privilege of riding here today and we couldn’t be more pleased with our experience! Our guide, Kelly, was encouraging and very informative as it was my wife’s first time riding. Kelly, along with the rest of the staff, made us feel more than welcome and right at home on the ranch. Quick and simple lessons on how to lead and guide the horses, how to keep up with the others make this place an amazing experience, even for first time riders! We over heard their conversations with other groups and am proud to say the staff treated those groups just as nice as they did ours. Thank you Kelly! We can’t wait to ride with you again soon!
Such a wonderful experience! Just call and decide whether you want a 1hr, 2hr or 3hr trail ride and they'll give you a designated time to saddle up and head out on the trails. We went with the 1hr to test it out. This was our first time doing horseback trail riding and a really long time since riding a horse. All horses in our group seemed very tame and well mannered. Our guide and all staff involved were extremely pleasant. I rode "Woodrough" and my wife rode "Big Momma". If you're reading this or any other review, just go ahead and reserve your ride.🐴
Extremely beginner friendly! Tour guides were incredibly helpful and kind and made my entire family feel confident even though it was our first time riding and we were extremely nervous. 1000% recommended for anyone who wants to ride but feels unconfident. Beautiful views and very responsible and well trained animals!
“Quit wishing you could ride a horse- just get out there and do it” I brought my daughter here for her very FIRST trail ride experience. She is a petite kid for her age and felt she was ready to ride. We arrived and received a warm reception with instructions. We got our helmets and saddle bag and only waited a very few minutes to have our horses brought up. ( Extra bonus points because they did great keeping the appointment time ) We petted all the pretty horses while we waited and were called up over to the loading deck. Getting on was super easy and quick. No climbing ladders or balancing on a stool. You just walk up the ramp to the deck and they walk the horse up for you to ride. Brian was our guide who took us out for a two hour trail ride. The weather was perfect and the scenery and views were phenomenal. It’s nothing short of a dream ride. We got to experience riding Ollie and Big Mama. Two gentle horses who took direction very well. The views can’t be beat. Once our ride ended we were welcomed to pet all the horses and see the other farm animals if we wished. We can’t wait to get back out there again. Thank you to the staff and team of horses at Sandy Bottom Trail Rides! We can’t wait to come back and ride again!!

1,000% Highly Recommend Blue Heron Whitewater Rafting GREAT crew so friendly and knowledgeable. Our family enjoyed the entire outing start to finish and my son wants to go back for more! They understandably go through the process with you beforehand if you are new and have very helpful tips to follow which is thoughtful and important so you can enjoy it all. It was a INCREDIBLE experience and we will definitely do it again! My son wants to do more 3s and 4s soon like he didn’t want the fun to end. Doug was the informative host and Jack and Nate our amazing guides *****FIVE stars all day! They also offer fun action pictures at the end taken throughout the trip, Worth Every Penny!
We had an incredible experience with Blue Heron Whitewater! From start to finish, everything was smooth, safe, and so much fun. Our guide Jordan was absolutely outstanding. Very professional, knowledgeable, and hilarious. He made everyone feel comfortable, gave clear instructions, and knew exactly how to read the river for maximum excitement. His energy and passion for rafting were contagious. He struck the perfect balance between safety and adventure, and his storytelling and humor made the whole trip even more memorable. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does, and it made all the difference. The scenery was stunning, the rapids were thrilling, and we left with huge smiles and unforgettable memories. Doug was awesome as well and he ensured that everyone was familiarized with the safety equipment and gave us plenty of knowledge on the ride to and from the river. We can’t recommend Blue Heron Whitewater highly enough. If you're thinking about booking, do it! You won’t regret it. Thanks to Carly as well, for going ahead of us and capturing some awesome pictures.
Blue Heron was soo much fun! It was an easy drive from Asheville, they went over all safety precautions and risk. The guides are amazing, they made our trip fun while also making sure we stayed safe. Huge shout out to Jordan! We would definitely go again and recommend them to anyone interested. Thank you Blue Heron for a memorable experience!
Incredible experience with Fritz! My best friend had surgery recently so we just did a relaxing float down the river and it was so beautiful! Fritz was a fantastic guide, knew exactly how to get us around rocks and sandbars like it was nothing. She was so knowledgeable about the area and the history it was all so refreshing. Highly recommend this place!
SIMPLY THE BEST!!!! Hands down, Blue Heron will not let you down! Professional, courteous, EXPERIENCED, excellent gift shop, very clean bathrooms and changing area. I could go on and on! They handled our group of 45 from ages 11-84 with ease! Special shout out to our guide Doug-he was Amazing!!! Thanks guys, we will be back!
My family and I had an amazing time rafting ! Our guide Kim was phenomenal! Her knowledge and expertise alongside with her amazing energy and vibes made our experience great ! I highly recommend this company, they are all super friendly their prices are great as well . The photo package was super affordable and worth it as we get to savor the great memories and rapids. Our photographer Carly was also amazing and friendly and captured some great shots of us !
WAGS took such great care of all of us! WOW you would never know he’s not the actual owner of the company. He loves this place, what he does and truly all the people he meets along the way, if he doesn’t, he’s great at acting like he does 😂 they should feel very blessed to have him there. We really had the best time out on the half day with lunch tour. Our actual guide was Laura who has been a guide for decades along with her husband who also does white water tours. We felt very safe with her and she gave good instruction. It was just me and my 61 year old mom who, after the instructional video, was a little nervous to go out. Ended up having the time of her life and even jumped in the water to wade in it for a few down the river (when instructed we were allowed to) The lunch! Was the best with high quality ingredients. They did not choose “cheap” when it came to the food. Fresh veggies, Dave’s bread, spicy mustard, high quality deli meats, chips, and Oreos. They were very concerned with making sure all the trash and compost came with us and none was left behind. I really liked that they put such emphasis on “leave no trace” My 61 year old mom with rheumatoid arthritis was able to do this just fine but that may not be the case for everyone with it so I would judge it ones physical fitness level and capabilities and how severe the disease has progressed. Obviously you are the only one that knows your limits so listen to your body. I made sure to keep a close eye on my mom the whole tour but she did just fine! Photos were VERY reasonably priced. It wasn’t too much and I wasn’t too cheap. They have it priced well within the sweet spot and the tour was a VERY great price for everything we received. I would definitely return if we visit Asheville area again 🥰
Such an amazing experience! Everything about the trip was incredible. The staff was very organized and answered any questions or concerns we had. Patrick was our tour guide, and he really made the trip for us! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a new fun adventure.

We had a company retreat in Asheville and decided to make the drive out after hearing amazing things about USA Raft & the Nolichucky Gorge trip. All well-founded! Our team was split into 5 rafts, each staffed by knowledgeable and fun guides. It was a rainy day, but everyone still had a blast. Definitely recommend!
Such a great trip! I booked a half day rafting the Nolichucky with 7 others. None of us had much prior white water rafting experience, but honestly that made it better. Huge shout out to our guide Sprocket: he was witty, super knowledgeable, and whipped us in to ship shape fast. The whole experience lasted almost 4 hours ans was tons of fun. At the end, the group got to "surf" which involved directing the raft upstream and hang in the little water fall. Beautiful scenery in the smoky mountains and we even saw a bald eagle. Overall I highly recommend this trip
My family had a great rafting trip with Lela and David as our guides. They were very safety-conscious but also lots of fun! Their communication was easy to follow, and we all worked as a team, including one teenager and two kids under 12. The picnic lunch was a very enjoyable way to break up the trip.
Stayed at Boone cabin with my hubby and 8 kids! So much fun, totally comfortable and enjoyable spot. Lela and David took our crew rafting down the Noli and showed us a great time. So impressed by their patience, professionalism and joy in what they do. Please ask for them by name when making reservations- you won’t regret it!
Planned this trip a month ago, long overdue vacation with my wife. We scheduled a 1/2 day rafting trip, for 1:30pm. We both work late nights into early morning so getting up for the 8:30trip would have been a rough indevour. However the wonderful staff worked some magic and got us a group for 10:30am. Our guide Lauren was amazing, personable, knowledgeable and made our trip memorable and safe. At night our "Appalachian concierge" Cory was quick to get us what we needed, helpful, friendly and an all around great guy! We had a couple great evenings at the Take Out Tavern. The food was amazing, the beers ice cold, service was absolutely spot on weather it was to warm our bellies after the wonderful white water or after a few beers. We stayed in one of the domes, the pictures didn't even do it justice to how luxurious it would be. The bathhouse facility and sauna were clean and maintained daily. We had a wonderful surprise of live music by the Dirty Dead. The grounds had this amazing vibe and ambiance, it felt like I came home, it was home, and everyone there was my family. A completely magical vacation, we can not wait to go again. Already looking at the calendars! Thank you to everyone, even if I didn't get your name you were intrical to making it the best vacation, what our souls really needed.
Absolutely horrible customer service! My group was eligible for a 15% discount for lodging. At the time of my booking, months in advance of the trip, I was not aware of this but became aware a few weeks before the trip. I called and emailed repeatedly trying to get someone to issue a credit and was told that only the office manager, Tiffany could handle this. Tiffany never replied despite direct emails and messages from her employees. Two days before the trip, we were told a credit would be issued and finally thought the issue was resolved. It's now 4 weeks since the trip and no credit was ever issued. I have called 3 times since and finally spoke to Tiffany who was not even remotely understanding about her lack of professionalism and failure to address this the numerous times I had reached out. I was finally issued a store credit good for a year, but no actual refund because that is their "policy." Their "policy" also appears to be to avoid all communication when it isn't to their advantage. Very unprofessional! I feel ripped off. Buyer beware!
Out of the three times I have gone, none have ever disappointed me. We had an awesome river guide named sprocket, and he totally blew we away with how cool he was, especially with his jokes. Not to discount the other guides as they are equally awesome!! Please do yourself a favor and visit this iconic river with the best guides in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Our group had a blast on the half day rafting trip through the gorge. It was SO beautiful, and exciting to navigate the class 3 and 4 rapids. Elliott was our guide and he was the master of the water and the dad jokes - very knowledgeable and entertaining. The location is perfect - convenient to the highway etc. We loved the resort too - so much that we came back the following weekend for the Dog Days festival. This will be at the top of our list to refer to our friends. Thank you!

Had a beautiful day with Smokey Mountain Trail Rides today! We had a great 2 hour ride with some hard working ladies and horses! Savannah, Shannon and Maddie were so patient with us. They knew the horses and trails so well. The scenery was amazing! We felt at ease and hope to return!
I would give them 10 stars if I could. The views were incredible of the blue ridge! They made sure we got a nice photo at the ridge. The ladies were so kind, and honestly made the ride so enjoyable and fun with their guidance & history of the land. I can’t wait to bring all my friends and family here when they visit. Such a memorable trip. The 1 hour ride still got the pretty views, but I recommend the 2 or 3 hour ride to just really soak it in the stunning views, some sun, some shade. I would love to try the camping next time. How cool would it be to ride horses into your campsite!? Sign me up! 💛🙌
Savannah was an amazing guide for out two hour trail ride. She made sure we were aware of how to approach different parts of the trail that needed extra attention and was fun to chat with. My husband rode Duke, and I got to ride Wild Thing. We had a wonderful time and will definitely go for another ride if we visit the area again!
We had the most AMAZING time at Smokey Mountain Trail Rides! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel so welcome, the girls were incredibly kind, patient, and friendly. You could tell they genuinely loved what they do, and it made the experience even more special. The owner was just as wonderful. Warm, personable, and clearly passionate about making every guest feel at home. It truly felt like visiting friends! And the trail... absolutely breathtaking. The scenery was straight out of a postcard, peaceful, beautiful, and the perfect way to soak in the magic of the Mountains. The horses were gentle, funny and well cared for, making it a great experience for riders of all levels. My husband has never ridden a horse and he has been talking about it even now that we are home. If you're anywhere near the area, this is a MUST-do. We’re already talking about coming back! Thank you for a perfect day full of beautiful memories. 💛🐴🌲
We had an amazing experience going on a birthday trail ride! We were greeted by all the friendly pups on the beautiful farm and the check in process was super smooth and easy. It was my 10 year olds first time on a horse and Steph, our trail guide, made him feeling very comfortable. It was just us 3 on the ride and she was very interactive and explained things about the property and the horses the whole time. She was great about answering all his questions. She took some pictures of us too, which we really appreciated. The views of the mountains are incredible, especially up at the top, and we even saw a Bison. We enjoyed every part of the experience, including petting our horses after. Would highly recommend Smoky Mountain Trail Rides!
Gorgeous scenery and beautiful horses that are clearly well cared for. Just as pretty rain or sun. Guides are knowledgeable about safety. They don’t offer a speed faster than a walk but the terrain is steep with many drop-offs so it’s understandable. Well worth a visit for any level of rider. I would post a picture of the view at the top but I literally don’t want to spoil it, that’s how nice it is. Go ride up and see for yourself!
What an awesome experience my son and I shared yesterday at Smoky Mountain Trail Rides. The two ladies working there were super friendly and welcoming. They made our 2 hour ride absolutely perfect. Highly impressed and I recommend the 2 hour ride and this beautiful location.
Absolutely fantastic experience! Steph, Savannah, and Maggie are masters of their craft - they made our group of 11, from my 6-year-old nephew to grandparents, feel confident. The horses were sweethearts with such wonderful and FUN personalities, and the guides were outstanding with the kids. The kids mounted first, and each got individual coaching from the guides (that was an awesome surprise--we were so impressed they did this). They could ask all their questions, and the guides were just so lovely in making sure they knew what to do and when. And of course, it was awesome to be riding on such a gorgeous property in the mountains! We have so many frameable pictures. We all fell in love with the horses, and the kids are asking when we're coming back.

Wonderful mini gallery. Lots of local artist hand made items are sold here. I got lucky as they normally don't open on Sunday but Marshall had hand made market today so the shop was open. Connie, the owner was so wonderful. She was kind and knowledgeable. She gave me the event calender so I can explore more events. When I travel to NC I'll definitely stop here again.
Stopping in to Flow is a MUST if you are visiting the town of Marshall NC. Located right on Main St, steps away from both the French Broad River and the Madison Country Courthouse, you are greeted by a feeling of quaint historic charm that blends both new and old. Antique french doors welcome you as you enter a world of high quality handcrafted items made by local artisans. Everything was displayed neatly and that made it easy to peruse. So many pieces were absolutely stunning! We will definitely return.
Love this lamp! She just rose there, celestial pagoda girl . . . to see how her space is coming in? ❤️ To the artist! ❤️ To Flow. Thanks for coming back for us! You've always had just what I needed! ❤️
ETA: yes, this review is for Of Wand and Earth next door! So sorry, Google asked if I wanted to review this and I didn't pay attention to the name! I can't edit the location and I can't figure out how to delete it. Sorry for the confusion. Interesting selection of jewelry, statues, and other items. I love rocks and minerals and there was a pretty good assortment of those as well. Teas, incense, candles... Anything along those lines you are interested in you can probably find there.
Wonderful way to spend some time in Marshall. Very diverse collection from metal, wood and jewelry artists and more. Great space that’s thoughtfully used for all the pieces displayed. And Peggy was a lovely host while we shopped. We’ll be back for sure.
A Big City gallery tucked away in a quaint, adorable, small town. This gallery hosts an amazing variety of diverse arts and crafts. From coveted tapestries to Van Gogh style paintings. There are discoveries here waiting to be found. The artwork speaks volumes about their perspective Artists. Don't pass this shop unless you've already found this little treasure !
Such a lovely local gallery in DT Marshall
Flow opened 2 years ago because of the efforts of 8 local woman artists and had 35 more artists co-sign during that time. All the items in the store are handmade and the owners believe in the “slow craft movement”, meaning that each item takes as much time as it requires, the artist spends time with each artwork. It is a blend of items ranging from wonderfully drawn cards to furniture with prices ranging from 3$ to 1500$. It also has a theme-based exhibit space. A name can be placed on everything that is sold there and it feels very personal. The shop is also a link between the local and tourist community and the artist and it is truly a great place!

This was a searched place while staying in Hot Springs on vacation. Fantastic place to take the entire family, especially if you are into the less common animals. Being able to interact with kangaroos, wolves, porcupines, lemurs, and a sloth really made the adventure better than I thought. When you are driving there don’t miss it since the drive is just a small dirt path.. Not even fully stocked with their full amount of animals, still had a fantastic adventure!
Was a fun experience! Secluded in Marshall, you arrive at there bottom parking lot where you then hike a quarter mile to the animal exhibits. Staff are very friendly and informative! If you take your time expect to be here for about an hour. Would go back again! I think if the wolves had a little more room to roam around they would love yal that much more.
I want to say that this place was amazing. What ever the negative reviews say don't listen to them. Google maps lead you directly to the place. You have to walk up a few steep hills to get to it, but it's not bad at all. We got greeted by the keeper who was nice as can be. She took her time with us and showed us every animal that was there. She let us pet them and feed them and also educated us about each animal She showed us. As an added on bonus, it's free unless you choose to donate to Farmony which isn't a bad deal at all considering the experience you get here. If you're in the Asheville/Marshall area be sure to check this out if you want to see Kangaroo, Lemurs and Sloths. They are tons of fun.
Awesome place to visit and great place to learn more about different species of animals. Grateful to them for the opportunity to pet kangaroos, wolves, lemurs, bat eared fox, hedge hog, two toed sloth, and the tree porcupine. Definitely worth the trip. It can be very busy and get very hectic if ahort handed, but everyone there was very friendly. They are planning on expanding and adding more animals.
The facilities appear sketchy and trashy but the experience is amazing. This is the first time I've been to a place where you can interact with animals like this. Zoos have to worry about lawsuits and have lots of visitors every day. This place has animals that you can get into the cages with and feed them, pet them and learn about them. The staff is knowledgeable about the animals, which were all well cared for and tame. My 3 year old nephew was in no danger even when he got over excited. It's also very inexpensive and all indoors so you can go there when the weather is bad. They are not advertised well online so it is difficult to discover them without knowing someone who has been there. I absolutely reccommend going here!!
Very awesome experience! Super friendly and highly educational. The guides are hospitable and insightful. The animals are amazing and the experience is hands on! Great place to bring your kids to learn about animals up close and personal.
This place is amazing! My 4 year old had a blast. This place is super clean and all the animals are well taken care of and happy. Super educational. Experience of a lifetime for sure.
Okay!! Don't let the outside fool you. It is quite a bit of a walk and it doesn't look that great from the outside. I wanted to go here just to pet the sloth. I was surprised once I got inside! We had an one on one tour of the animals. It was just an amazing experience. I really want to go back again!!

Superrrr cute store, must stop by if you’re in Marshall! The owner was very kind and helpful and everything is super cute. Really fun to look at everything, including all the vintage pieces on top of the shelves and throughout the store (but aren’t for sale). Got a hate and some really nice honey chapsticks. Cash or check only!
While exploring shops on Main Street in Marshall, North Carolina, my brother and I discovered Penland & Sons Department Store. The store has been in business more than 100 years. There are window displays on the left and right of the double-doors entrance. After entering, we were politely greeted by a woman clerk who explained the history and her family connection. I walked all around the aisles and looked at many items for sale. On the upper top shelves of the wooden display cabinets are interesting memorabilia and one-of-a-kind antiques. The large interior seems even larger because of the very high ceiling. My brother purchased an old panoramic photograph of Marshall. He later told me he had to pay cash because Penland & Sons Department Store does not accept credit or debit cards. While many businesses in the small town of Marshall close at 3 or 4 PM, Penland & Sons Department Store opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 PM. It is closed on Sundays.
Highlight of my trip to North Carolina was visiting this store. Like you’ve entered another era. Unique North Carolina made clothing and gifts that are reasonably priced. Owner was wonderful. Wish there were more places like this.
Excellent service and the added touch a family history that extends 100+ years. The very kind sales person shared Madison County History from a family’s history which left me so intrigued. Also excellent collection of books which covers Madison County History.
3rd generation owner. She was amazing and was amazing to talk to. She let us try horehound candy. We will be going back. Should t miss this place.
It's Mast General Store before it was a chain. Good selection of items not usually found in department stores. Super people and locally made jams and pickles stock the shelves. Another reason to stroll downtown Marshall.
One of the owners of this pleasant welcoming store went out of her way to pickup a special order for me. They care about their customers! I’ll be back many times.
Great place to buy sourwood honey not to mention Christmas gifts, local books, boots, carhartt merchandise and rada cutlery. Friendly local family owned business.

great venue in a charming little town. only the cool kids show their art here.
I'm a native artist. I've played all over the world, in some of the largest and most respected venues and festivals. My band's body of work is recognized globally. So is my solo work. The only interaction I've ever had with these people was when I volunteered to teach guitar at a summer clinic. They scoffed at me. "Why would we want you to do that?" ...was the wording used. I've never had one ounce of respect or even acknowledgment from these people. I have no idea what they do except fashion shows. I'm sick of the gatekeepers in this town. I'm sick of being excluded along with the rest of the native population. The arts council would be lucky to have my involvement, not the other way around.
If you want to understand Marshall and Madison County and the people who live here, take in a show at the Arts Council. You'll be welcomed and find humor and kindness in a down home atmosphere while seeing interesting arts, both performance and 2d/3d. Good programming for kids who might not otherwise have access to the arts.
Great place for live music. Always a good show. Great staff and volunteers led by Laura Boosinger.
Boy, can they bring the talent! Music and visual art, classes for kids, and a radio station, all on Main Street in one of the most unique towns in America.
Extremely helpful. Thank you
Needs more stuff love the small town
Has made Madison County a Haven for arts and music.

It was such an amazing and perfect experience. It was me and my mom’s 2nd meditation and yoga retreat here. It surpassed our expectations. The teachers are inspiring and kind. Our accommodations were lovely and we really had a wonderful time all around. We stayed busy and will be back!
I had no expectations. Just a place to go to heal and be quiet and silent. And this place left speechless! I had such an amazing time here. They are marvelous. Amazing food. Everything was perfectly done. From greeting to goodbyes. It was a place of peace. And we'll worth the money.
I attended the weekend silent yoga and meditation retreat. My experience was awesome and exceeded my expectations. The yoga, silence, meditations, and programs all worked together to deeply enrich me . The food was unbelievably delicious and I am not a vegetarian. I highly recommend Prana's silent yoga retreat.
I recently attended a weekend long silent retreat and would recommend it for someone who is new(er) to meditation, yoga, or the retreat experience rather than someone who is looking to deepen or challenge their practice. The facilities are adequate. The food (all vegan) is excellent. The programming is okay, but not particularly creative or varied. The facilitators did not seem well versed in best practices of adult education, but there is permission to make things your own which was helpful. The yoga was primarily stretching or restorative based, and did not offer any kind of flow. As a first experience it likely would be fine and the price point makes it accessible.
I recently attended my 3rd retreat at Prama and I am so grateful to them for providing such an amazing program. The food is so delicious and healthy, the facility so clean, comfortable, and beautiful, and the staff are so warm, loving, and accepting of everyone. I look forward to going back for another retreat soon. Prama retreats help you be the best version of yourself!
This retreat was just amazing. The food is as great as they claim (I'm not a vegetarian!), but everything else was so much more amazing than I expected. I will be unpacking revelations from this retreat for months. Highly Recommended!
Terrific experience with great amenities, insightful instructors, and impressive food. Location is amazing though hard to get to if you have a bigger car.
I had a good experience. Structure of the retreat was reasonable and doable. Accommodations and food were good. Instruction was solid.

The good stuff burger was great, the atmosphere as well and wait staff.
Lots of great local(ish) beers on tap. Fantastic food; not the regular fantastic, but the real authentic fantastic. And the service is outstanding. This is me and my wife's first visit. We will be regulars. I'd love to tour the entire menu but it's going to be hard not ordering the Shrimp & Sausage Rigatoni every time.
I loved the atmosphere. High ceilings, open space, down home rustic feel. Food was just ok. Fish and hush puppies were too heavy on cornmeal. Nice folks working there. Good beer selection.
50 minutes for a couple veggie tacos and a burrito, not busy at the time either, someone other than our waitress apologized for the wait after about 45 minutes, i think our order was lost... if there were a discount offered or the food was great I would have rated higher. The food wasn't bad, and priced right.
The perfect raft guide/local hangout. A little rough around the edges - just how I like it. Excellent beer, food, and music. The deck overlooking the French Broad River (and right next to the railroad track) is my favorite.
They made us feel at home and the food was amazing.
Always excellent food, a good mix of local beers, sweet outdoor seating, usually something musical going on, and great service.
Super cozy atmosphere. Love the rugged look. Food is great, and the staff are all real friendly.

Got their regular semi-sweet mead, it was my first time trying mead and this did NOT dissapoint. It is incredible!!! It has a mild honey and light fruit aroma on the nose. Initial notes of fruit and honey and slightly effervescent, mellowing to a very balanced sweetness, with notes of oak. Very pleasant aftertaste of oak and a hint of spice.
Owner gave a tasting and was very friendly. Great mead, bought 3 bottles while there (strawberry, spiced and special).
Great Mead. Small building off of the owners home. Defiantly need to invest in roadside signage.
Loved the Strawberry and Special Reserve!

When I decided to have a small elopement in the Asheville area, I was looking for a venue with amazing mountain views. I am so happy I found Longleaf Vineyard while searching online! Traveling from Texas, I wasn't able to see the venue in-person, but Mona was so accommodating providing a virtual tour and answering all my questions. Everything was even more beautiful than expected when we arrived the day of the ceremony. There were some scattered storms, but everyone went above and beyond in navigating that scenario to make the day perfect. If you are looking for a stunning venue with amazing customer service, I highly recommend checking out Longleaf Vineyard.
We got married at Longleaf in September 2021 and we couldn't have asked for a more magical day! Wendy was so great to work with the entire planning process. She has previous wedding planning experience and her advice and expertise were so appreciated. Longleaf truly is a venue unlike any other - with the views and wine from their own vineyard, we felt like the venue made our wedding feel so personalized and special. Many of our guests agreed it wasn't like the cookie cutter venues people always pick. Everyone stayed in downtown Asheville and we had buses to transport to and from the venue - everything went off without a hitch! If you're looking for a venue that truly caters to the couples that choose them, look no further than Longleaf Vineyard!
I cannot say enough amazing things about Longleaf Vineyard. If you are looking for a wedding venue in the mountains with a vineyard, look no further! Our Longleaf wedding was an absolute dream. From the stunning views to the attention to detail, our day was perfect. Wendy & Brian are a pleasure to work with. Wendy was easy to communicate with and made sure nothing was overlooked. I knew on the day of the wedding they had everything under control and I could just relax and enjoy the day! I can't recommend Longleaf enough!!
Finding and choosing Longleaf Vineyard, more importantly, owners Wendy and Brian was hands down the best decision we made for our wedding. We were treated like friends and taken care of as if we were their only clients. Saying "yes" to Longleaf was easy... the mountain and vineyard views are breathtaking, the owners are absolutely phenomenal, the wine is SO good that every time we visited we took a couple bottles home with us, all of their recommended vendors were fantastic... we truly had the BEST day. What we didn't expect were all the changes and emotions we would have to face through covid, but Wendy and Brian still helped us navigate through that too. Brian even became our officiant when ours got sick, and that's just one way they stepped up to make things happen for us. We will always be so thankful. We love Longleaf and know you will too.
I loved photographing this venue! The view and the care the owners show the couples and the vendors alike is simple unmatched. Everyone was kind and my couple felt truly card for. The views are a photographers paradise and I can't wait to return!
Longleaf was everything that we dreamed of. We had almost given up hope in finding a venue, but as soon as we got to the top of the hill overlooking the vineyard into the mountains, we knew that this was it. It was the perfect intimate setting with the most gorgeous views. Wendy and Brian were fantastic. Wendy made sure everything was perfect and was quick to answer any and all questions that we had. Brian's passion for the vineyard showed through the amazing wine that they offered-- everyone is still raving about that Peach Chardonnay. This is definitely a venue that you don't want to miss!
What a breathtaking place to be married at! Our wedding photos are gorgeous and will be a lifetime memory for us. The owners, Wendy & Brian, are very lovely people to work with and they are very knowledgable on what their property can offer and all the options they can make happen. They were flexible with us too in having to brainstorm different solutions, especially during COVID times. They even offer a decor closet to borrow from, which is an added plus! It did rain on our wedding night but thankfully we did a first look prior to the ceremony and got some cool rain pictures as well. The pavilion and the reception tent/ bathrooms are so close to one another our guests did not mind the bit of rain we got. Jennifer Russ was our wedding coordinator/ planner and one of the best decisions we made during our wedding planning was booking her (thanks to Wendy's recommendation)! She is AMAZING and made my whole wedding stress free!! I can't thank everyone enough for making our day so special. P.S. Longleaf Vineyard wines are very good, we got a ton of compliments on their wine! Merlot was my favorite, even though I am typically more of a cabernet kind of girl.
We are grateful that our forever began at the beautiful Longleaf Vineyard! Not only are the views of the Appalachian mountains breathtaking, Wendy and Brian (owners) were incredible to work with. I was an out of state bride and they made it easy to plan our day from afar from beginning to end. I highly recommend booking here for your wedding! I wouldn’t change a thing.

My first time at a Ground Zero as middle aged conservative wife and mom. It was entertaining. I was so tired of standing because I worked all day. There was a girl in the mosh pit that kept running around and her favorite thing to do after thrashing around was to leave the circle, rest for a second and then she would instantly fly through the crowd knocking everyone out of the way kinda like a bowling ball hitting the pins. She kept it up all night. Wish I had her energy. She was dressed like beetle juice. When she was in the pit she was just throwing herself into everyone . That’s kinda the point, I know. Then she'd leave and walk past the couple of rows that were around the pit. Then start over. Her sweaty body rubbed against my arm. And I've never in my life seen so many tall guys. It was like an episode of the Vikings. Long hair guys everywhere. Add in Sons of Anarchy and you can picture it. Everyone was so polite though. Honestly, kinda calm people. Other than the thrashing which no one took seriously. Like no one got mad at that Beetle Juice girl. I started realizing that we were pretty "safe" standing right behind the guys that were on the edge of the pit. They were just pushing people back into the center. Like a human fence😂. I’ve decided that I like the screaming. It’s actually the best stress reliever ever. The last song was titled “ F you”. I found myself visualizing everyone that has ever pissed me off. It felt good. As far as parking, we ended up having to park in the back of the building in 3 feet of weeds and grass. It wasn’t a deal breaker and if anything it just added to the whole experience of getting out of my normal life. The area is kinda like an episode of The Walking Dead. 10/10 I’d definitely go there again!
This venue was awesome. I saw Escape the Fate here on 5/16/2025. All three openers were absolutely awesome (Belfast Six Pack, Halo Scars, and On Virtue). Escape the Fate was absolutely amazing. The sound quality there was great, all of the staff were nice. The bar was really quick and well stocked, there were lots of tables and chairs to use in between sets so we could get off our feet and relax a bit. Prices were very very reasonable on everything. We did get the more expensive beers - the apple and pear cider - but so worth it because they were yummy and a really nice light drink to enjoy in the heat of people around us. I look forward to coming back. Its about an hour drive, but thats so worth it for the great experience my husband and I had here.
So other than 2 beers costing $22, the place is great. Drove from North Georgia to see The Norse play. Sound was pretty good for them. A bit muddy for the other 3 bands. The staff was pretty friendly. I'd go back to see other bands here.
Low key bar venue. Ample parking for the size of the venue. The prices are good, and the bartender was nice. Audio was adequate for the size of the venue. We had a really good time.
If there was air conditioning I'd have given a 5. Very awesome location for live music. Love the dive bar feel.
Very friendly, everyone there to have a good time. No trouble, no problems. Entertainment was great. Especially liked AJ and Cam
First time here, and the vibe was perfect! It would be cool if it weren't 3 hours away from me. I decided I had to make the trip since I'd told myself I had to see Cultus Black again.
Ground zero has went to absolute zero. I don’t see how bands still perform here with no proper maintenance to their building. Also rips offs fans with false advertisement from their flyers.
