I stayed at Pine House for the weekend. I absolutely loved it. Some modern conveniences in an historical building on an incredible campus with history of astronomical proportion to the island and the country. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They provided information about local happenings and made me feel very welcome on the campus. The bookstore also had many great books that made rocking on the porch a sanctuary for me. This was the best soul retreat I have ever had.
Love the historical, encouraging history and the motivation of the future of Penn Center! The staff adds that welcome of family feel to the experience. Live it!
Film narrative was redundant to esteemed speaker at museum, no pictures allowed. Chairs were somewhat uncomfortable. Visitor center was not open. Grounds were interesting and well maintained.
To be clear, this review is based on the experience from our visit. The center itself, its history, purpose, and story are inspiring. We bought tickets for the guided tour, but it wasn’t a tour at all. We heard the guide speak about place for about 10-15 min then watched a 30-40 min documentary. I was expecting and hoping for a walking tour around the property! Save your money and just do the self-guided tour. After sitting so long with our ADHD son, we had to leave as he was done.
Truly a life changing experience. Truly sacred grounds. Dr Gibbs was very engaging and inspiring. The campus is stunning.
Amazing historical place. I wish I could share photos of the museum, but it was not allowed. The water is so peaceful in the back. I believe they have an Air BNB there.
Wonderful historic grounds. I attended the Black Moses Freedom Festival and had a great time.
Special place that has been nicely preserved and continues to serve the local community

Right off the road so it's easy to find. Parking off the main road so it's safer than some.
It's worth a visit only if you are in the area. There's one sign that says you have to get permission to have an event here... no historical info The structure is made of a cement mixture with seashells. Looks like there was a smooth cement finish at one time evident on the upper walls Several gravestone nearby that are mostly broken and difficult to read.
Interesting if you are nearby. The bugs were awful the day we went so we weren’t able to stay long. The Egyptian Revival funerary style mausoleum is a little creepy with the area for three caskets open with loose debris visible. Not well maintained but interesting.
Beautiful place, glad I was able to spend some time there. The property is well maintained and clean, try to keep it that way :) Photos taken on Google Pixel 4a (5G).
Such a beautiful piece of history hidden away on the side of the road. We stopped by for a few minutes to explore, and ended up spending almost an hour there. We loved feeling the seashells on the bones of the Parish. There were dozens of headstones to read. The whole atmosphere of the area had a tranquil feel to it, and drew us in. We didn't want to leave. The grounds welcomed us like an old friend. Take a little time to explore the grounds for yourself! Definitely worth a stop.
Old! Noticed while it was built out of shell and macadam they had gone out of their way to cover parts with trowel mark lines to simulate stone castle blocks. To “church-ify” it?
One of the historical places on your way to light tower
When we visited it was a quiet rainy day. We were the only people there. It feels a little magical standing within the walls while looking up at the sky, knowing how long ago others stood in the same spot as I was standing. Inside the remains of that church, you can imagine the songs that probably filled that space.

Had an absolutely amazing experience! If I could rate 10 stars I would. We did the coastline trail today. I don’t think I’d try any other!! This one was perfect! The farm and trails are beautiful and the staff are so kind and wonderful. Our guide, Brian, was awesome and gave us alot of history of the tour and just good wholesome conversations. We left with wonderful experience and great memories. We will definitely be back!
Two of us paid $140 for a trail ride on the beach. There was no beach to ride on. The workers had to know that the shore would not accommodate us ahead of time but they hid that information and took us through dirt roads and trailer parks for two hours until we turned around at the beach. No history about Coffin Point or group beach pictures like the ad reads. Dismounting was not organized and my 60+ year old mother's foot got stepped on by her horse. She will have a long road to recovery. If only they had been honest and said the tides were very high and we would not be going on the beach, we would not have taken the trail ride. Nice staff, but the advertising is not honest at all.
Brought our grandchildren for lessons and pony rides. My son and his wife also did a beach trail ride (romantic!). Savannah, Eleanor, and Kate were wonderful. The facility is impressive. Would definitely recommend you include this on your Fripp rental week.
We were told to arrive 30 minutes before our booked coastline ride. We did….no one to be seen at the office. A lady opened the door after we had been there awhile to let a dog out, saw us there and closed the door back….never acknowledged us there! Our ride was wonderful! Our guide, Brian, was awesome! He was very friendly! After the ride, we used the restroom before leaving. Told the 3 ladies inside “Goodbye, have a nice day!” and they never spoke! I’m so glad our ride was not like that! 4 stars for the ride and Brian, but I’d give 0 stars for the actual “office staff”!
What an experience! I booked this excursion for my sister's birthday - she loves horses and has her own and even shows! I knew she'd love it and I enjoyed it as well. Very fun and such sweet horses, Bandit and Grady - thank you for a memorable vacation. We will be coming back!!
A fantastic memorable experience! The trail ride includes horseback ride down Avenue of the Oaks at Coffin Point past the home used in Forest Gump then beach riding. Just a beautiful setting for a ride. The guide had all horses saddled and ready to go and was very friendly and provided personal photos. The farm stables and area just gorgeous. Highly recommend and will return.
Such a great ride! The horses were gentle for the less experienced riders in our group; I was given one with *just* a little more pep to make things interesting. :) And Missy was a great guide. The views were wonderful -- Nothing like live oaks dripping with Spanish moss! And walking along the beach was a delight.
Went for a day ride, was amazing!!! Called the facility the day prior and Kathy was extremely helpful with directions and specifics. Upon arrival she met us and showed us around and where to get water and where to ride. Trails were well groomed and the beach was fantastic!! On return, we were given full use of wash racks to cool our guys off. Will definitely return. Camelot is on the top of my “Go To” list!!

Such a cute store and an excellent family stop! There was a super cute little play house with a tea set and seashells to color on for the little ones and a huge selection of Pokémon cards for older kiddos who are interested. The gentleman at the desk, Andy, was so kind and had a long conversation with my talkative 10 year old about all things pokemon and even gave him a card for free! We were so glad we stopped in!
Wasn't expecting to see a Pokemon shop on this trip, ended up finding heaven :D Affordable and reasonable prices along with interesting and/or rare collectables! Guy was super friendly and nice to talk to :) The souvenir store itself was quite lovely and very quaint, worth a stop.
A must-stop for any road trip! We're a long way from home, and this place was a nice inviting place to stop! Picked-up some Honey 🍯 , Pokémon cards and veggies outside. Enough parking for an rv.
Lowcountry Store is a beautiful collection of art, apparel and local artifacts all by local artists and vendors. This is the place to get your own little piece of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Local owners too!!
Andy was extremely friendly and very helpful. The store has some of the most unique, beautiful items! I lived in this area my whole life and this was my first time there. It did not disappoint. Andy and his wife Maddy own the store! They are true locals! I will most definitely be back!
As a native Bostonian visiting Fripp Island on an engagement vacation - The Lowcountry Store is a MUST SEE! This place is so damn charming in every conceivable way I’ve never seen such a wide selection of handmade goods from local artists and makers alike. We don’t have shops like this up in Boston! My fiancé and I grabbed a cute postcard as a memento to our time here, but we spent a solid 15 minutes just strolling through and seeing all of the gorgeous pieces on the shop floor. It’s clear that a lot of love and passion has gone into that place over the years. We’ll be back next time we’re around without a doubt! I recommend you don’t miss it should you be in the area
What a hidden gem! We live locally and would pass this store and finally went inside! All I can say is WOW! The selection this store offers is amazing and beautiful! I'm so happy to have finally stopped in. It is the perfect place to find yourself something or a gift for someone else. The customer service is great! They are super friendly. If you have not stopped in yet, I'd get there and check it out. You will not be disappointed!
Such amazing people! I literally can’t even describe what an amazing store this is! Local artists and craft makers couldn’t be supported by a better couple! Thank you both for everything I bought today and your interest in my craft making abilities! I’ll send everyone I know your way! And my free bracelet I got for my husband on accident! No words could possibly describe you hospitality and kindness as well as incredibly support and taste in local artists!

McDonald MarketPlace on St. Helena Island is a beloved Store, steeped in history and located near downtown St. Helena What's more, the staff at McDonald's Market are always friendly and helpful, happy to share recommendations or simply chat about the island's latest news. Great decor and maps throughout the market add to its charm, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring St. Helena Island!
This shop carries all kinds of lowcountry and coastal decor for your house, paintings, statues, all sorts of things. We visited the shop to buy oyster shell magnolia flowers for decor for our house. We bought an ornament sized small one for $29 (it has a string for hanging) and a medium sized one for $44. They're made by Charleston artist Lonnie Cowart and such good quality! They look beautiful in our home and we might have to go back and buy another one. The shop has so much neat stuff and the staff is lovely. I'd definitely recommend popping by if you have free time sometime!
Wonderful store. The history behind it being the first market on St Helena's Island is amazing. The shopkeepers were so nice, and absolutely loved our little girl. They showed her pictures of sea turtles. We left after purchasing local artist Elayne Scott's paintings. The original Gullah art is so rich with culture. I'm so glad MacDonald's Marketplace is still around after SO many generations. It was great to be able to step inside, and bring a little history home. 💜
Awesome store has a little bit of everything fine wines super selection of rare antiques, unique trinkets for that special some one who has everything. Cocktail supplies for all the small home party's this Holiday. Huge selection of Christmas decor the Pretties in Bft ......
Love this place! Fantastic local arts, crafts, home decor and so much more. I have been coming to the islands for years when I was a local. Now that I live in Tennessee coming back to some of my favorite shops is so nostalgic for me. The only thing nicer than this shop is the women who work there.
Beautifully styled shop with a wide array of offerings. Gorgeous home decor, holiday trimmings, antiques and original art work. Also wine and food items, some locally produced. The building itself is a bonus...original architectural details like the store counter, wall cabinets and flooring are swoon worthy for those who love such things. Friendly staff who enjoyed sharing the history. We stopped in 30 minutes before closing as we finished a long day exploring the area. It is such an enjoyable shop with so much to see, I could have spent hours there. If you love these type shops, you won't be disappointed.
Love absolutely everything about this place...the tall ceilings, the wood floors, the way the sunshines inside...the gentleman that gave us taste of his tomatoes.....
Very nice older building. But it had a lot of interesting things.

Jessica was a great tour guide! She took us out to the sandbar, helped us learn to cast a net and gave us a tour of the harbor & estuary. She’s a certified naturalist and was very knowledgeable about the wildlife & surroundings. Highly recommend Beaufort Lands End Tours!
I took a a group of youth from our church paddle-boarding with these guys. Our group had a wide range of experience: no experience to pretty good. Mike Fox utilized a variety of boards and allowed our youth to take turns trying out different style boards from beginner to racing. We had a GREAT experience and are planning to join them again for another paddle board/kayak experience! I HIGHLY recommend Beaufort Lands End Tours & Kayak Rentals. A GREAT group to work with!
We celebrated my husband’s Birthday by taking a skilfully guided kayaking excursion conducted by the owner, Irene Goodnight of the Beaufort Lands End Tours. We recommend her company to avid kayakers or those who brave to kayak for the very first time.
Beaufort Kayaking. That's what I typed into my phone as I was driving down I-95 headed towards Beaufort, SC. Irene answered right away and I told her what I was looking to do and confessed that I had not done much research beforehand. She eased my mind and said that we could shoot for the next day which was Saturday but that the weather may be iffy. If it didn't work out, we'd shoot for Sunday. She took my credit card info to hold my spot and that was it! She told me most likely Mike Fox would be taking me out. Mike texted the next morning to get my thoughts on the weather. Truth be told I wanted to sleep in and it was raining in Port Royal where I was. So we agreed to try for Sunday. About an hour later Mike texted me back that the weather Sunday was looking worse and that he was going to check out the marina and see what the conditions were. I ended up driving to the marina to meet him and we decided to go for it. After a short release form, he offered one of his sit on top kayaks instead of my sit in kayak I had brought with me in case we did get rain. We talked about the best entry options which for me was the boat ramp. We headed over through the marsh since it was a bit windy, ducking under the piers carefully on the high tide, and king tide at that. He took me to a castle (see pic) and gave me some cool history about the place. He's really into the Pat Conroy novels so if you've ready any of those you get bonus points. Mike even pointed out some wildlife that could have been dolphins or a very large, what I call, tarpon. On the way back we checked out the sailboats on the mooring balls. I never felt rushed to end the tour but I did have a lunch date waiting for me at Plums so it was time to head in. All I had to do to complete the transaction was tip Mike and Irene took care of running my card for the tour. Highly recommend these guys!! It's also nice that they can take you out as a single kayaker and not have to wait for a larger group. Next time I'll try the SUPs. Thanks Mike!!
We had an amazing experience with our tour guide Mike Fox! He was so knowledgeable about the area and took some amazing pictures for us. He even made an album for us and sent it to our emails free of charge! We had such a great time on the water almost like we were all great friends just hanging out! If you are just beginning to get into the sport or have had a lot of experience with kayaking, you will enjoy it either way.
This was my second kayak excursion I took with Beaufort Lands End Tours & Kayak Rentals. My first was back in October with Mike as my guide. He was an expert on the water and knew so much about SUP and paddling. I really enjoyed talking with him and navigating the Bay. It was a thrilling experience. When I came back to the area in December I got the opportunity to kayak out at Hunting Island with Irene Goodnight, the owner. We saw otter, dolphins and one girl sighted a whale - later confirmed on news when whale sighting was also seen from Hilton Head! What a magical day!!! Through these tours I have met so many nice incredible people, and learned about the area. What better way to enjoy a place with so much water - than by being out on it? Oh I highly recommend this company! I look forward to my next trip with them already!
What a delightful experience! My bright green kayak and I had a blast paddling the marshes of Beaufort. I even came across a ship wreck. Mike is a delight to communicate with, prompt and caring. I have a sailboat on the mooring field in the marina here and Mike went above and beyond by sending me text updates after Hurricane Dorian to let me know that things were safe and sound. Top notch service and I would recommend Beaufort Lands End Tours to anybody!
I highly recommend these guys for your kayak or sup tour! After booking the tour Irene stayed in touch and we even got a text from our tour guide, Mike, introducing himself. The morning of our tour we got started but there was a storm brewing off the coast so the wind picked up and the water got choppy. We had to bail but Mike hung out at the launch point to see if it would clear up. Once it did he let us know and we went back out and had our full tour. I think they went above and beyond to make us happy. We booked a second tour with them later that week and had another great experience!
