Pipestone National Monument completely exceeded my expectations! The entire area radiates a sense of peace and calm, creating a truly zen atmosphere. It’s not just beautiful, but deeply meaningful — a place rich in history and spirit. Truly a special experience I’ll never forget.
Great place for short walk and great information on the history and cultural significance of the location. Local artist demonstrations are fantastic. The walking path is easily accessible for all and unexpectedly beautiful. So much history packed in a small location.
One of the best features of southwest Minnesota. Pipestone National Monument is a great place to hike around, they have a very informative and wonderful visitor center, as well as some much Native American history here. I would definitely recommend stopping in the visitor center first and checking out the petroglyphs. Free admission.

October 2025: Gov shutdown means open restrooms and access to trails. Take time walking around, it is pretty.
Beautiful area with lots to learn and read. Has a nice picnic area by the lake and pretty views of red stone and large rocks. The lake was filled with turtles and that was fun to watch them The visitor center was awesome and so much to learn. They had people there carving Pipestone. A small gift shop,, and restrooms. Then there is a nice loop around the area and a waterfall. So pretty
Pipestone National Monument is super sacred to many American Indian tribes, who dig up and carve its red pipestone for some serious prayer ceremonies. Pipestone National Monument is like, the ultimate spot to explore American Indian culture and the natural resources of the tallgrass prairie. It's got some pretty cool geologic features and paved trails, making it a great place to hang out.
Pipestone National Monument is a Beautiful park with great history. There is plenty of parking and easy access to the visitor center. The people are friendly and take time to answer your questions. The exhibits are beautiful, and you can talk with the tribal people and they will share the history of their crafts. Just outside the visitor center you can take a hike around the beautiful 1/4 mile loop, the path is mostly flat and paved for easy walking. Along the walk ,you will enjoy the beautiful views of the meadows and fragrant scents of the flowering trees. Stop and see the marvelous rock wall and find the hidden faces in the rock. The trail will lead you to a beautiful running stream, and about half way you can stop and enjoy the beautiful waterfall . There are rock stair areas where you can climb up to see hidden rock sculptures and bulletin boards with descriptive photos so you can enjoy the history as well. The sounds and sites of singing birds, and small critters can be seen as you explore. This is definitely a beautiful place to see, filled with great history.
We are on our journey to collect National Park Service Stamps and this monument was along our drive to North Dakota. We loved watching the video and learning about the pipestone only found in this area of the country and the significance to the native people. My kids each picked out a hand made item from the gift shop. Employees were friendly and had a wealth of knowledge. We did a short hike. Saw a couple water places and loved seeing the colorful prayer cloths.

Amazing shop!! Loved hearing the history and cool tidbits from Pascal!!! (Hope I spelled their name correct). Learned a lot about all the pieces available for sale and then some! My mom and I had an amazing trip to here 😊 11/10 would go again when I come back to MN next. Found the perfect souvenirs this time for me and my friends and family 💜
Had a good time with the man running the place. He shared many stories of the history of the pipe. This is a very nice place to visit.
They were closed when I was in the area, but the peace pipe outside is worth a stop regardless.
I waited in excited anticipation of receiving my order! On a phone call before placing my order, Pascal patiently explained the pipe making kit. But even more imperative, he explained the smoking of herbs. Of course the herbs chosen have the power of healing. But, the choice of herbs, scented the individual’s breath. For Native Americans, the eyes and the scent of their breath speak of the character of the individual. Now, I will carve the pipestone to my individual character. I will sample the herb mix sent to me. I will mix my own herbs in the future. I will follow the wonderful daily meditations posted on Facebook. Thank you for this spiritual gift of self awareness…. Please support The Keepers with donations to their organization and/or purchases from their online shop. John &Winston Brew
Love this place, worth the stop! Locally ran. very informative staff. I bought a peice of raw pipestone and wanted to make my own pipe. I learned alot about what to use and how to go about doing it. And just finished my first ever red pipestone pipe. THANKS PIPEKEEPERS!
emailed the shop for a class (they only offer stone carving anymore. (which is fine - i was excited! (: )). we had it all scheduled, albeit "scheduled" meant i was told "okay we have you down for that day!" so maybe i didnt do enough to confirm they didnt forget about me before showing up. i went to Pipestone with the expectation that most of my trip would be spent learning and enjoying the class. the night i showed up to Pipestone the "open" sign was alight all night and the next morning it was still the same as it was left the night before. 10am rolls around and the shop is still closed. 11am came and went; i rang the ring doorbell several times throughout the day. sent an email inquiring and left my # for a call. best/worst part? around noon maybe (?) was when the light was turned off and the doors to the shop unlocked. but no one was in the building!! biggest bummer. the very #1 reason behind going to pipestone after all was decided, was for the class and learning experience. hope all is well within the business. i still have not received an email from when i tried to reach out while i was there.
Knowledgeable staff, welcoming and friendly. Awesome gifts, but quite expensive.
That's amazing place for shopping have cool stuff and friendly service. I recommend it
