Tarandowah Golfers Club is located just off the 401 Highway halfway between Toronto and Detroit. Online it has a cult-like following. People drive hours to the heart of Canada’s dairyland to play it. It was designed by Martin Hawtree who is a third generation British architect. He’s worked on Ballybunion, Portmanock, Royal Birkdale and Sunningdale. It’s his only North American course. Tarandowah’s clubhouse is marginally better than a Quonset hut. The cart paths are well worn gravel and the gas-powered golf carts don’t have GPS. But after first appearances the course didn’t have any weak holes. The fescue fairways run forever. The greens are interesting. Every hole is unique. The pot bunkers are manageable. Online people would compare it as a links course to Piper’s Heath or Braeben. But Tarandowah has a much more natural feel. Most of the complaints are related to slow play. But on a Friday afternoon we played our first 18 in just over three hours. Then we played another 18 and had the course to ourselves. Tarandowah was a lot of fun and I can see why golfers make a pilgrimage to play it. Finishing in the golden hour made it a little magical.
Very challenging links course. Had some hurricane winds today, which made it even more fun, really hurt the scorecard.
I've played this course about 3 times over the years, with the most recent being this past week. Took advantage of the Wednesday special for $60 including a cart (book online). No question it's a links style course. Get off the fairway and you may never see your ball again. Going into one of the many pot bunkers (lots of them) will cost you strokes in most cases. Fairways are hard pan and sloped in many cases, including towards bunkers. Greens when we played were not running as fast I thought they might. Experienced some slow play, but overall not bad. The tee off areas were in rough shape on some holes and could use some additional care. Also, bring a wet towel to clean your balls as there are no ball washers on the course. Overall, I'd recommend playing the course, especially if you can grab an online deal where it's good value for your $$.
This place was amazing. True links style golf in its purest form. I had the pleasure of being able to get out this past week & experience it first hand. The course is extremely well maintained, the staff are super friendly, and the food was delicious! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. I had an amazing time and will be back!
I’ve been traveling quite a distance at least 15 to 20 times per golf season to play Tarandowah Golf Course. Whether you’re playing the tips, the reds, or anywhere in between this golf course and the staff are nothing short of outstanding. It’s by far one of my favourites and I’ve played a lot of courses. The more we play the more I appreciate the nuances and challenges this golf course has to offer.
I WAS looking forward to playing this course making the over an hour drive sunday, unfortunately things happen in life and I have to cancel my tee time. The fact I've called 6+ times , emailed twice and my wife also has called and emailed and you don't have a single person answering phones or even replying to emails for a " top 30" course is absolutely insane and mind blowing to me. I would love to come play here but based off this experience I think its going to be a hard pass on that, not based of the course or its conditions but the most simple most basic thing, the thing that builds business and has people coming back ... customer service At this point if possible I'd give a zero star review
It is interesting to read negative reviews of Tarandowah and I wonder what these golfers expected. It is a links course and does not play nor is it supposed to play like a parkland course. That is the entire point of links golf. You adapt your game to suit the course. This course is meant to be a test of your complete golf game and can you adapt or break. We played it twice last week. Very dry fairways. Convoluted greens. Masterfully constructed. A pleasure to play.
This course is always a lot of fun. It’s challenging and well groomed. The staff are amazing and really love just getting out of the city to golf here. The greens are also really well taken care of!
