Great experience, we saw three kinds of monkeys, layman's, sloths, iguanas, several birds and had a great lunch. I recommend you do this tour. It's worth it.
We had a relaxing boat ride led by a local guide and saw a large number of birds and caimans. Also a buffalo and monkeys!
If you're seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path wildlife experience in Costa Rica, Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit. Located near the Nicaraguan border in Alajuela Province, this remote haven offers a serene escape into one of Central America's most biodiverse wetland ecosystems.
I loved it here - away from the majority of tourists and lots of wildlife. To see it you definitely need to take a boat. I organised one at the bridge very easily - I was a couple of hours early and they fed me some fresh fruit and as much coffee as I could drink. There were some cayman directly in front of the restaurant which kept me busy.
Amazing place to see lots of birds and reptiles. You must have a guide, as without one you really wouldn't see much. I never knew that huge iguanas spent most of their time at the very top of trees, its amazing to see. I recommend you booking a tour for 10am, most suggest 7am, but that totally unnecessary. Also, I recommend if driving use the road from number 4, not 35. Road 35 has much more potholes and large rocks.
Nice boat tour. We got to see Spider Monkeys, Congos, lots of birds, a caiman and they even let us get off the boat and we went searching for a beautiful orange howling monkey! Gustavo and our captain (forgot his name) where very knowledgeable and really friendly! We finished with a nice lunch!
We had a wonderful 2 hour boat tour seeing all kinds of wildlife. Our guide was amazing at spotting things and ta,ing us in for a closer look. Although the day was hot, being in a covered boat on the river was delightful. Recommended
Fantastic wildlife, very close as boat drifted up and down stream. Definitely worth visiting. The drive there is tiring (so called Costa Rica massage 🤣😖) but the place is incredibly rewarding. We saw at least 23 species of bird and I suspect a lot more, plus caymans, crocodiles, lizards, iguanas, monkeys (at a distance), turtles

We had an incredible tour of Medio Queso with Renato. Whether you're a serious birder eager to search for specific target species or a general nature/wildlife-lover, I really believe you will be thrilled with your experience. Renato was extremely skilled, friendly, and enthusiastic, with an endless knowledge of the Cano Negro area. As many other reviewers have mentioned, this ended up being the highlight of our whole Costa Rica trip - I can't recommend it enough!
One of the top highlights of our whole trip! We made the arrangements over WhatsApp. Renato and Jesus took us on a fascinating and enlightening tour of the river and lagoon in Cańo Negro Reserve. They let us use very nice binoculars and showed us almost 60 different species of birds, including the Amazon kingfisher, spotted sandpiper, bronzy hermit, roseate spoonbill, a huge tree full of snorting neotropic comorants, various warblers and tanagers, and several types of egrets and herons. My favorite was the black and white owl--the biggest owl I've ever seen. We also saw a cayman, several iguanas, butterflies, turtles, and howler monkeys. The photos on my iPhone did not do it justice, but I will never forget this experience. Take their advice for the roads to get there based on where you are coming from. We chose the shorter scenic route through pineapple farms and ended up on a very bumpy dirt road. The nearby restaurant they recommended was also delicious.
What a wonderful experience! We met our guide Tatiana at the boat dock on the Rio Frio, and under the capable piloting of captain Heber we started our five-hour tour of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Our primary goal was birding, and we saw a total of 55 different species. In addition, we learned a great deal about the ecology, history, and management of the wetlands. Because Tatiana is very knowledgeable about the refuge and an excellent teacher, we came away with a much deeper understanding of the rich diversity of wildlife and the people who call the refuge home. We highly recommend Caño Negro Experience Nature Tours.
We enjoyed the Ecological Boat Tour and the Nocturnal Tour and highly recommend both. The guides, Tatiana and Renato, were extremely knowledgeable and pointed out many insects, birds, and animals we would never have seen on our own. Tatiana also did a great job arranging for our accommodation and meals.
Fantastic experience boating down the Caño Negro with our family. Started off with a bit of light rain that cleared after a bit. Both the guide and boat driver were excellent at spotting wildlife throughout the tour. It was only us and the guides on the boat. We saw many birds and caimans. Highlights included seeing an agami heron. Was super cool going from the brown river into the black water of the lagoon. Getting there was a chore. It was the roughest road we drove on during our two weeks in Costa Rica. Nothing dangerous or windy just very slow and bumpy. But it was well worth the effort, and the guides made the visit exceptional.
Thanks to Renato, Abraham & Chuchu, we had with my friend such an incredible experience. The tour was super interesting, very authentic & not overcrowded with other touristic boats. It really felt like we were in a magical place. Renato & Abraham have an incredible knowledge of this eare and all the plants & animals of this zone, we have learned so much! Always getting the answers of all of our questions, we can truly feel all the passion they have doing their jobs! Thanks again for all the jokes, the knowledge and this unforgettable experience. Pura Vida, Mati y Maxime
Amazing experience and highlight of my trip in Costa Rica! Tatiana and Renato are so knowledgable and passionata about conservation and ecotourism! Also, Byron (boat captain) was great and had amazing eyes for the tiniest Basilisks! Pura Vida Mae!
Loved it - one of our Costa Rica highlights. Had pretty modest expectations when we rocked up, but the 3-hour tour was great. Our guide Karen was friendly and engaging. Saw lots of wildlife (that we'd missed elsewhere in Costa Rica).

(Translated by Google) It is an incredible place, I recommend it to all nature lovers. An impressive view of the canal, quantities of birds, reptiles and impressive vegetation. You should go in both seasons of the year because the habitats change in each season. In winter they are impressive canals with a lot of life in their waters, you hardly see any large birds but there are thousands of colorful birds. In summer, the pipes become small rivers and thousands of herons among other migratory birds come to feed and nest. Incredible place!
(Translated by Google) We have an additional 30min drive to get to the restaurant. No one to welcome us except children who told us it was closed. However, we were within the correct opening hours... So, we returned to a safe bet, the el Fogon restaurant. Never disappointed (Original) Nous avons 30min de route supplémentaire pour arriver au restaurant.
