Nature & Parks
Beachside forest reserve home to endangered red colobus monkeys & birds like bee-eaters & hornbills.
Slide 1 of 10
Loved this with the monkeys got to feed from my hand and sit on my Shoulder. So cute I wanted to take them home.
This is a marvelous place to be if you're a nature lover, birds 🐦 and monkey 🐵🐒 lover especially the (red colobus)... All you a little cash (money) to pay an entrance fee, Groundnut/Bandanas for the monkeys to enable them come down to you.. It was amazing seeing the monkeys and birds with the aid of Mr Ebrima.
It’s a part of Monkey forest (but monkeys seems to stay closer to the entrance) and pretty pleasant walk. We tried to reach beach but unfortunately the path has end and as I am afraid of snakes I decided to walk back (yes there could and probably are!). I didn’t take a guide this time as it is super easy to walk there and it was my second time.
This is still a beautiful forest, despite losing half to conference center and constantly under threat of destruction(development) by those who should be ensuring it's protection. The entrance is now a dust road running from beach up to highway other side of conference center.
Was My first time there. Monkeys were friendly. Seen some babies. Me and My Husband with Badi Bunka and His Wife Benta Bunka. 🌟
This must be one of the best trips i have done! The monkeys are actually in their own habitat they are not caged in any way. They are absolutely loads of monkeys here, and the babies are just absolutely adorable you can feed the mokeys they sell nuts at the reception (a little tip, i took bananas still in their skins cut up in my bag, they absolutely love them) it was just amazing, and a trip i would do again and again! ❤️
A quite fake experience, a little stripe of forest, not particularly well-kept, a lot of monkeys in the first hundred meters, and even more tourists trying to feed them, then almost empty if you take the whole tour, just a couple of birds. Staff and food sellers at the entrance not particularly nice, trying to sell you everything as always. No need for a guide, you just can have the whole tour by yourself in about one hour.
Monkey park great to see and feed the monkeys. If you have children they will love it. On your way there everyone will try to sell you peanuts you can buy them at park which means your supporting park and volunteer workers. You must have guide you tip them at end. Don't believe what they say about size of park as it is less than half the size now because of construction of new Chinese center being built. They tell you it can take 2-4 hrs to get round park not true 1.5 hrs that's if you stop and take your time.
Visiting the Monkey park was a awesome experience. The tour guide was knowledgeable and the monkeys were fun to watch.
Costs DL150 entry fee, but you'll also be expected to buy peanuts for Monkeys and tip the Guide. That said all in for two adults DL600 (approx £10) for a busy afternoon which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Shopping
Bustling, long-established open-air street market featuring vibrant textiles, handicrafts & produce.
Slide 1 of 8
This market offers organized sections of clothing, personal needs, household goods, fresh produce, meats, handicrafts and souvenirs. We found several souvenirs a unique piece of likely imitation animal horn. We spent about an hour learning about the various textiles here. The shopkeeper explained the origin, qualities, the weaving and the durability of the fabrics. I always thought that the good quality fabrics were from Senegal but I learned they come from Netherlands, with cheaper blends from India and China. I bought enough fabric to make an outfit when I return home. The market is a great experience.
This is a huge market, the largest im Banjul. They sell all sorts of things. From clothing to kitchenware to food. Very interesting but not unlike other markets in The Gambia or Africa. I’m giving the experience only 4 starts because of the people who are outside just waiting to “guide” you through the market. I understand that they’re trying to make a living, and it may work for some people, however, I like to walk alone and take my time absorbing the experience. It’s hard to “shake them off”, and doing it takes away from the experience. If you arrive with your own guide, then this won’t be a problem for you.
We went for a walk and fabric shopping on the weekend. Very vibrant place as you can enjoy seeing variety of products there. You can also visit the landmark Arch 22 while entering to Banjul town.
Good place for souvenirs!
Albert Market is a great place to go if you're looking for a bit of retail therapy! It's got everything you could possibly want, from clothes and equipment to fish and animals, and art and leather crafts. It's a real melting pot of cultures and a great place to soak up the local atmosphere. As a western tourist, you'll feel safe here, but just be aware that some people might try to sell you things you don't really need. There's no need to worry, though, as most Gambians are very friendly and welcoming.
Market in the heart of Banjul. Found things to be surprisingly cheaper than the Serekunda market
I love this place. In the capital it is one of the old markets. Anything, from modern day fashion, to fresh fruits and veggies, meat, fish, art, musical instruments, fabrics, and jewelry can be found here. One of my favorite places so it embodies the spirit of African community and commerce. It is huge and a whole day can be spent just walking around, taking in the sights. I highly recommend Albert market for a true Gambia experience
I believe it's the largest market in The Gambia. There are a lot of varieties of items. I fed my eyes. Got to buy some oranages from a very nice lady. They told me they were as sweet as sugar, and guess what?! They did not lie! I still need to understand how the red dry fishes are made.

My husband is from Brikama The Gambia, on my visit he made sure that I came bc he stated how can you come to The Gambia without coming to Banjul? We came on a Tuesday which was hot and sunny, overall I enjoyed my trip to Banjul. Not sure why it says anything about was tickets purchased bc we didn’t have to buy any! Walked around and seen the inside of Banjul and definitely WORTH taking a trip when you’re nearby.
This arch has an interesting story as no one is sure if they should celebrate its existence. The Gambia gained its independence in 1965 from the British. During its short democratic state, it has a military Coup D'etat. It was the military that built the Arch as a commemoration. The military dictator held the power for 22 years from which he was voted out. The Arch 22 represents the 22 years of the Coup. Interesting history of this Arch. Regardless, it is a statement similar to the Arch De Triumph in Paris.
Going to Gambia was definitely an open opener. The history and culture is very rich and everyone should at least have the experience. Please wear comfortable shoes because you be doing walking up the stairs. The breeze also feels amazing as get into the breezeway.
Arch 22 in Banjul is an imposing, complex monument—not a simple celebration, but a colossal, 36-meter-high gateway that physically and emotionally anchors The Gambia's multifaceted history. Standing at the heart of the capital, the Arch commands respect for its sheer scale, yet visitors feel a deep, poignant reflection on the military past it commemorates, a period many remember with profound ambivalence. Climbing the tower to be met by the refreshing, panoramic view of the city, the winding River Gambia, and the boundless Atlantic Ocean is a cathartic experience, symbolizing the nation's resilient spirit; from this height, the past is framed by the hopeful horizon, urging all who visit to recognize the weight of their journey while embracing the promise of a peaceful, democratic future.
With 100D, you can go inside the monument where historical artifacts and records are exhibited. It’s cool to look down the entire Banjul city from the top
Wonderful "Egereh" experience. Had great 2nd row seating. The timing between each hunting was long but when this hunting came out he danced for the crowd. There were so many people, the place was packed.
Absolutely must go. Just 100 dalasis entry and you can climb to the top. It gets dark in some spots so be careful! The top floor is a small “museum” and local guide will explain all about politicians while you see photos there. Originally I didn’t want that as I came for photos BUT I am so glad he made me to listen as it was pretty fascinating (and those photos are amazing)
Nice place with an amazing view over Banjul and the whole river Gambia delta. Our guide was friendly and funny, this price of 100 GMD per adult is fair.

My husband and our friends took a ferry ride and it was nice. It was hot that day but being on the water was very calm for me. I can't wait for another day out on the water.
The ferry system is not managed properly. Different information from each staff. They will just be saying that the ferry is coming meanwhile on the gps it hasn’t moved from Banjul. People are being pushed ahead of us after waiting 5 plus hrs to cross in a vehicle. Too many ppl on board at once. 0 accountability for anything that goes wrong and the people are not paid enough so they end up taking compensation to push other cars ahead. I don’t know how they can fix the issue but, needs an overhaul of management altogether. Just be prepared to spend most of your day at the ferry 800 dalasi to cross in a 4x4 along with 35 dalasi per passenger very reasonable price. If there is any other way to cross a vehicle please alert me as I take this trip often and have spent countless hrs here 6 hrs today and 3 cars just got passed ahead of me. So praying that I cross with this 3rd ferry since I arrived. Photos from when we spent the night because we got jumped in front of one car that had us missing the ferry home.
Very chaotic, although bribes needed you never know if you are going to get onto the next one ferry, or if you spend few hours waiting for the next one
The ferry was not even close to being full, but people were rushing to get in all at once. A very bad organization that Gambian authorities need to take care of!
Very busy area. If you are traveling on foot then it's not a problem, but if you are driving a car we'll that's another story. It's about a 20 minute ferry ride and most of the time they have 3 ferries running. Corruption at it's finest. We drove from Dakar to Banjul and back. We had to pay for the ferry ride, which is not a problem but in order for you to get your car on the ferry that you already payed for, that's where the fun begins. We had to bribe about 4 different people and we still had to wait 4 hours to get on that ferry. Checkpoints everywhere in The Gambia, if you are driving and the people working the check points always try and get money from you.
The Banjul Ferry Terminal is a very busy place... The place is always crowded with business men, women and those traveling to Senegal and to the nearest villages within the river area. Banjul to Barra is so lovely and amazing being ok the Ferry sighting the sea and other activities being carried out on the saw by individuals fishing etc. 8f you didn't meet up with a particular Ferry you have to wait for some time for the next ferry to come.
The old ferry is slow and inconvenient... the new one is fine with all necessary things. The new ferry is in a very good condition, which makes it really fast. It makes the new ferry to cross to Barra approximately 30 minutes.
A busy place. Watch out for your stuff! Connects Banjul to Barra (South of the River to the North). The ferry can be slow but it’s still an amazing experience.

This 3-story museum houses exhibits & artifacts related to the history & culture of Gambia.
Slide 1 of 8
This museum hosts many important photographs, artifacts, clothing, and displays of The Gambia's history and culture. The museum covers from prehistoric Stone Age to the present. The front lawn has a sculpture park with 5 distinct features of the people of Tje Gambia the gift area offers books and postcards. The museum lacks funding to preserve and present artifacts in a more honorable and protected manner. I spent over an hour reading each display and written work. Note that access is by several steps. Restrooms are located behind the secondary building
If you are in town, it is worth to visit. Very informative as you can also learn a bit more of The Gambia.
This is a museum that has many displays of the history of The Gambia. There are many displays from ancient times and up to today. It is not allowed to take pictures of the inside of the museum so I can only show you the outside, which has a lot of interesting things to see. Overall, a good experience.
Remember, "TIA"! This Is Africa, and your expectations should be equal to this amazing place. This museum tells the incredible story of Gambia as a country through time, including some truly awe-inspiring displays of slavery, governments, people, African culture, and more. You get to learn that there are two sources of income in modern Gambia: (1) tourists, and (2) peanuts! The many overtaking government troops through time now secures the peace in Gambia. And what a peace it is! If the military starts shooting, no tourists means no income. But that’s not going to happen! This small African nation is so interesting because of the colourful people, the African culture, markets, display of religion, animals, nature – the list goes on! You can spend as little or as long as you like here – it’s all good!
The National Museum of The Gambia, housed in a building in dire need of urgent renovation, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the country. Despite its current state, the museum presents a collection of diverse artifacts that reflect the cultural heritage and evolution of The Gambia over the centuries. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing items ranging from ancient pottery and traditional clothing to colonial-era relics and archaeological discoveries. Each artifact tells a story, providing insight into the traditions, customs, and struggles that have shaped Gambian society. While the museum's physical condition may be less than ideal, its historical significance cannot be understated. For anyone in the area, a visit to the National Museum of The Gambia is a worthwhile experience. It offers a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the country's past and its place in the broader context of West African history. As efforts are made to improve and preserve the museum's infrastructure, it remains a vital cultural institution, preserving the heritage of The Gambia for future generations. Despite its current challenges, the National Museum stands as a testament to the resilience and importance of preserving cultural identity in the face of adversity.
This museum needs a lot of work! The building needs to be renovated or rebuilt with the artworks properly arranged and placed in a step-wise manner to tell a good story. I felt disappointed visiting here. I hope the government of The Gambia rejuvenates this place as many tourists tend to visit every day.
National Museum of the Gambia= The museum is not a big building but informative enough to cover the history of the Gambia. Lots of artefacts starting from the stone age to the present which are of cultural and historical interests can be seen displayed. If you are interested about history like i do then i can recommend to visit this place when you happen to be in Banjul.
Without a doubt one of the best museums I've seen on the African continent. Incredible amount of objects and artifacts, all labelled and well displayed, dating from the stone age up until today. Absolutely worth visiting if you are in Banjul.
