We had an incredible experience with Fox Glacier Guiding on our Heli Hike! We were lucky to have a bluebird day with stunning views from the helicopter flight through the valley up to the Glacier where we got to spend about 3 hours on the ice. The guides were all lovely and made the experience safe and fun! We got to slide and crawl through tunnels, explore crevasses and visit some beautiful blue pools. Just being on the ice and seeing the different formations up close was amazing. Thanks so much to Fox Glacier Guiding, would 100% recommend this adventure!
This was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We were so lucky to have the opportunity to e-bike and hike towards the Fox Glacier with two incredible guides giving us an unforgettable and humbling experience with mother nature at her best. Billy and Jake were amazing guides and this experience will always be something I will cherish forever. ❤️
Our morning helihike was cancelled due to poor weather but they were able to reschedule us for the same afternoon when the rain cleared. What a surreal experience 🥹❄️ surrounded by deep blue crevasses and endless peaks, our guide Jake worked tirelessly to carve a way through the ice 🧊 for us. What an absolute legend. Sadly, it’s unlikely Fox Glacier will survive its current form for future generations due to warming temperatures so knowing the glacier is retreating makes this even more special for us. A rare moment in time we will never forget.
This was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life, let alone in my trip to NZ! The preparation and safety briefing beforehand was thorough and professional. The helicopter ride was amazing. Then we got to spend around three hours on the glacier, hiking around, climbing up and down carved ice steps, drank glacier water straight from the source, and squeezed and slid through an ice cave. Massive thanks to our awesome guide, Serena. This was truly unforgettable and worth every penny!
Really a must try activity in NZ though it’s kinda expensive. But for the helicopter ride and 3 hours of hiking on the glacier, I would say it’s worth it. I feel safe throughout the activity and they provide good and ample attire and equipments to ensure you are safe and dry. The guides and the service staffs at the check in are all very professional and friendly.
We had an amazing glacier hike with our guide Keely! She was professional, super friendly, and made the experience unforgettable. We felt safe, learned a lot, and had so much fun. Highly recommend!
My experience was a dream. The check-in person was very clear with all the information, also the briefing pre-flight has all the needed info. The gear is very good quality. The helicopter flight is short but so much fun. Our guide was so professional and nice. He actually made sure that everyone was wearing all the gear correctly and made sure to clearly explain how to use everything. If he saw somebody struggling on the hike, he made sure to give quick tips to make their hike more comfortable (How to walk, how to properly use the walking poles...) I felt super safe at all times. I actually got worried when we arrived to the glacier because I thought the hike was going to be too hard for me but it was actually very nice. Even though we went up higher than usual (I had a very small group) I was so ready to keep going! I loved that there was no rush, they gave you enough time to take pictures and enjoy the view, but they also made sure to keep us on track so we could enjoy as much as possible. He took us to cool little ice caves and gave us a lot of fun facts. We were joined by a sherpa that has been there for 20 years who helped us go trough the toughest parts of the path. I think this was my favorite think I did in my 3 week trip to NZ.
As a wheelchair user, I was blown away to find out there was not only a way to get up on a glacier, but to actually get out on the glacier and explore. Everyone at Fox was amazing in facilitating my accessible adventure. I genuinely sensed that they were as excited as I was to be able to make this a reality. I felt safe the whole time and had an unforgettable three hours on the glacier. Heitor and Fiona and everyone else were delightful. I highly recommend it. #accessible

Family-friendly wildlife center with kiwi birds on display, a glacier attraction & guided tours.
Slide 1 of 8
There are 2 options: self-guided or a VIP backstage guided tour. We chose the former as it allows 48 hour access and seemed sufficient. Currently there are two kiwi birds at the facility. Excellent and informative displays. The Centre also includes information on glacial ice and how it forms. Definitely a worthwhile experience!
West Coast Wildlife Centre is an absolute must-visit if you’re in the area. The staff are so passionate and knowledgeable, it’s clear they care a lot about the conservation of local wildlife - especially the endangered kiwi. A lot of work goes into protecting and supporting the local kiwi population, and now the local penguin community too. A visit to the centre as of 18th October ‘25 now includes a walk through the kiwi habitat and the newly opened penguin enclosure, where the team provide a safe space for the little blue penguins who wouldn’t survive in the wild to live their best life. You’ll learn a lot and see some truly adorable local NZ wildlife. 10/10 absolutely recommend.
Really interesting place to visit in Franz Josef. There are lots of outdoorsy activities to get involved with in this area but if you ever the weather is nit so good, or youre lookjbv for something different to do, and recommend this place. We booked the VIP entrance which gave us access to the kiwi egg incubating/ area and hatching and Tuatara back area. You will see kiwis, Tuatara and little penguins on the standard entrance ticket. It was fascinating and the host was full of interesting facts and info. This is not a zoo. The work being done here is in conjunction with Govt departments and is all about conservation. You will learn alot about these unique animals. You get a chance to see kiwis in as near to a natural environment as is possible. As such, I would not recommend for those with toddlers, as the kiwi area is dark and you are expected to be very quiet in order to catch a glimpse. You choice though. However, there are Kororoa / little penguins to make up for it and they're easily accessible. Coffee area and gift shop here too. Would recommend.
Amazing experience! If you have a rainy day in Franz Josef and looking for an indoor activity, book yourselves the vip backstage tour. In our tour, we learned about the kiwi conservation efforts and even got to see a 23 day old kiwi behind glass being weighed, absolutely adorable. All exhibitions were extremely interesting but the regular kiwi and penguin exhibition was the highlight! Kiwis are kept in dark rooms and they were so easy to spot and very active when we visited. Little blue penguins are so social and curious! Could’ve watched them for hours. 10/10 experience.
Part of our organize tour, we visited this wildlife center .. we got to see the blue penguins, the guide gave us so much information about them , very interesting.. then we had to be quiet , we entered a very dark room , no photos allowed but we were lucky enough to see a real kiwi in his habitat .. of course lots of teaching given .. as you exist , a gift shop awaits you..
If you are looking to learn about what makes New Zealand so special this is your place! We did the VIP backstage, which we HIGHLY recommend. Devin was very knowledgeable and most importantly extraordinarily excited about his work! You could feel the passion oozing out of him. Seeing rare species and learning about the hard work this centre is doing to preserve it was amazing. A must do!
An absolutely wonderful place to learn about and see kiwis, the backstage tour where you can see the kiwi eggs and learn more about how they get and incubate them was definitely worth it! Their gift shop also has a vast selection of kiwi and NZ themed items as well. Highly recommend for anyone in the area or driving through. The penguins and extremely unique Tuataras were also really cool!
I have to agree with some of the lower starred reviews. This was a very expensive experience for not a lot of value. We arrived late in the day, on a wet day…the (2) kiwis on show that day were elusive and the penguins were in their burrows so we didn’t get to see them at all. Would have liked to have learnt more about the rescue operation but it was all based on reading panels which weren’t very engaging - more videos of the kiwis programmes would have been better. If you want a decent experience buy the Backstage pass maybe and be there for the penguin feeding - otherwise very $$$$ for what it was. Took all of 15 minutes to see what we could. And sorry but the exhibits are just not modern or interactive enough for the value.

Gentle hike through ancient forest with the snowy peak of Mt.Cook, or Aoraki, reflected in the lake.
Slide 1 of 8
Very nice walk around the lake. It’ll cost you about 1,5 hours in total. And if you’re lucky you can make the perfect reflection picture. I was not 😅 But still enjoyed this walk very much. The path is just wonderful.
The Lake Matheson walk is an absolutely breathtaking experience, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. This 6.5 km round trip took us about 2 hours to complete, including time to soak in the stunning viewpoints. The trail itself is well-maintained, winding through lush native forest with towering trees and ferns that create a serene, almost magical atmosphere. The highlight, without a doubt, is the reflection lake and the iconic viewpoint. On a calm day, the still waters perfectly mirror the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, including the majestic Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, offering a postcard-worthy scene that left us speechless. The overcast sky added a dramatic touch to the landscape, enhancing the reflective quality of the lake. The gradual incline and flat sections make it manageable for most fitness levels, though sturdy shoes are a plus given the gravel paths and occasional muddy spots. Whether you're a nature lover or just after that perfect photo, this walk delivers. A truly brilliant way to connect with New Zealand's natural beauty!
We didn’t manage to catch the famous mirror reflection at Lake Matheson, but it was still such a beautiful experience. The walk itself is peaceful and full of natural beauty, and even on a cloudy day the views are worth every step. There are several great spots for photos along the track, and the café and gift shop at the start are a nice bonus. A few stairs along the way, but nothing too difficult. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the Fox Glacier area!
I visited Lake Matheson on a prefect sunny day 🌞,and the whole experience was breathtaking. The weather was clear and the hight light the reflection on the lake were absolutely stunning just like in the postcard i felt overwhelmed by the beaty of nature ✨️ all around me, the walking track is well maintained and easy to follow it took proximately 1.5 hrs to complete at relaxed absolutely love it ❤️recommended
Really nice walk even on a cloudy day. You need clear skies too see the mountains though. Kea were lurking on the roof of the cafe causing trouble.
Comfortable walk with a great view, a full round takes 1 hour, there are areas with benches with lake view, great for a quick snack and rest
Do time your visit to get clear reflection from the lake. Walking track varies on which options you choose. Going right till the end requires longer hours. And if you have a few more stops to make on your day plan, I suggest the first look-out should give you the picture.
The Lake Matheson path is superbly maintained and a pleasure to walk. There is ample parking at the trailhead, and the route itself is beautifully laid out, winding through forests of tree ferns before opening to the lake’s mirrored views. The paths are in excellent condition throughout, with clear and consistent signage. The posted walking times seem geared toward those taking a very leisurely pace, but the terrain is easy and well graded. Benches are thoughtfully placed at the top of each incline, exactly where you would want them. It is one of those walks where every practical detail has been quietly and expertly considered.

The best way to see the glaciers is from above but the snow landing is the icing on the cake. We happened to be the first to land on Fox that day so the snow was pristine. Pilot and staff were very professional and would highly recommend.
What a great experience! From booking to flight the whole thing was easy and everyone we dealt with was great. Tee at the Franz Josef office was exceptional. Friendly, knowledgeable putting everyone at ease. The ground staff and pilot were great too. It’s great to see so many people loving their job. Would highly recommend.
Absolutely fantastic company to deal with. Every staff member from booking to ground crew to pilot were friendly and helpful. The actual flight was mind blowing. The scenery was spectacular and snow landing so much fun. Would absolutely recommend this company to fly with.
The weather was questionable. They knew we were only there for a day. The explained all options and were clear about pilots decisions. We were confident in the best and safest decision. Jay, our pilot, took us up and gave us the best possible adventure he possibly could. We are returned feeling like we had gone to heaven. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAY!!!
Every single part from start to finish was amazing the communication about the possible weather changes about changing the booking. Everything was very flexible. Amazing experience from start to finish would thoroughly recommend. Our pilot, Simon was very knowledgeable and shared lots of amazing facts whilst in the air. Felt very safe all the way through. Thank you!!!
Everything about the ride was perfect. From booking, rearranging to suit weather, ground staff & pilot and in the end the morning we selected made it perfect. I would highly recommend Glacier Helicopters.
Great experience. Smooth all the way. Rich the pilot provided a great guided tour with a running commentary. Would do again in a heartbeat.
We had to reschedule a couple of times due to weather. Staff were friendly, helpful, and clear. We had a fantastic experience and felt well looked after and very safe the whole time. Everything seemed clean, organised and well maintained... That says a lot as well!

It's hard to put my experience with Skydive Fox Glacier into words, but I have a lot of them so will share. It was honestly the most exhilarating, beautiful and mind-blowing experience of my life - and I could not recommend it more highly. This has been ranked as the second most scenic skydive IN THE WORLD, second only to Mt Everest haha! Once you're up in the plane admiring the view, you'll understand why. That said, one of our tandem instructors said he's jumped Everest few times and he actually prefers Fox - because you start at sea level here, you get to fly higher. Obviously Everest starts at a much higher altitude, which restricts the height at which you can jump from. That makes this (arguably) the best skydive in the world!!! Everything was perfect from go to woe, but I'll break down in detail... Starting with the booking process - I booked two skidives, one for me and one for my fiancé Ben, online. Communication with Sarah (who I later learned is one of the pilots!) was great from the get-go, and the website was easy to use. I actually changed my skydive day from Wednesday to Thursday about a week out, and this request was accommodated without complaint. On the day of our jump, we were picked up by the Fox Glacier Skydive bus outside out accommodation in Franz Josef right on time. Our driver (and owner of the company) told us that we were about to embark on the most dangerous part of the day: driving from Franz Josef to Fox Glacier haha! An absolute skydiving expert, he provided some great insight on the drive. I was very reassured to learn that the owner of Fox Glacier Skydive actually heads up the board foe skydiving safety across NZ!! Rest assured you're in the safest possible hands jumping with these guys. Once we arrived at the drop zone, we were giving a safety briefing and given the opportunity to purchase photo/video options. I would highly recommend the combo package! The photos and video you get are extremely high quality and a perfect way to remember your day. The only slight downer on my day was the guy who was working reception when we arrived. I later learned he's also a pilot for the company, so maybe he was just upset to be on desk duty? He seemed extremely grumpy and like my questions were frustrating him. I will say he cheered up once the morning 'rush' checking everyone in was over. The jump itself was PHENOMENAL!! We jumped from 13,000 feet, and the view from up there was honestly insane. We could see snowcapped mountains (in April, no less), Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Fox Glacier river coming down through the rainforest and into the farmland, and then out into the ocean. Simply stunning. My tandem buddy Nico was fantastic. I was quite nervous but he set my mind at ease, making it an extremely enjoyable experience. He even landed me ON MY FEET!! I got into the brace position but then as we came in to land he was like "Actually, just stand up," and I landed firmly on two feet. Incredible. I cannot thank him enough. Nico also produced an awesome video for me to remember the day with!! Sorry for the long review, but I really want the world to know how great these guys are. We were blown away and could not provide a higher recommendation if we tried. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Do this jump. You can jump from 16,500 ft. You see snow capped mountains including Mt Cook, the highest peak in NZ. You see the fox glacier and the Fox River which it flows into. Rainforest. The ocean. And over a minute's free fall. Awesome, and well worth the money! Also, the crew there are fantastic.
These guys are legends. Don’t hesitate to book, extremely friendly guys that live for skydiving. Safety briefing was very good. Henrik my divemaster was a really nice and extremely professional guy! View excellent 😃
Incredible views from 16,500 ft and great staff! Wouldn't recommend the videos just because you don't get high quality and the video you get is one long clip which is quickly edited and can't really be messed around with afterwards. Pictures were ok. They take them with a GoPro hero 3.
Really fun experience. The team is well organized and the process goes very fast. We decided to jump from the highest altitude (16,500 feet). In retrospect, the longer free fall isn't really necessary, but we were glad we did it for the spectacular views from the airplane. Overall really great experience that I would recommend to anyone.
Amazing experience. My second skydive in NZ. Specifically chose them for a higher jump. 16500ft! The jumpers are experienced and nice. They build rapport easily and comes from all parts of the world. Their pricing if u compare with other jump operators are actually much more value for money worth. MUST DO. and fox glacier is beautiful in every way!
OMG!!! This is the best skydive I've ever done. Went from 16,500 ft. So so worth it. Views of the glaciers and the southern alps are breathtaking. The instructors were really experienced and friendly; managed my nerves really well on the flight up! Cannot recommend this enough!!!
I bought a voucher from these guys for my boyfriend as a birthday present in December. The staff was very nice and helpful from day one emailing back and forward. Last week we have finally made it to Fox Glacier and booked the jump. Steve was blown away by the views and Skydive Fox Glacier really made the whole experience great and memorable. If you thinking of skydiving in New Zealand I would definitely recommend this company!

Therese went above and beyond ( even loaned me a pair of sunglasses when I forgot mine) to ensure that we were well prepared for our deluxe 40 minute flight to Fox/ Franz Josef Glaciers and Mt Cook / Mt Tasman with a stop on the ice. James was a most professional pilot with a lovely manner and happily took photos for us. This was a truly unforgettable experience. I loved every minute of it. Thanks to this amazing local team.
Had the best experience with Michael during our Glacier flight / overview of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. The ride was smooth and informative and probably one of the best experiences of our trip to NZ. Therese was very communicative and worked with us to make the trip happen with weather uncertainties. I’d recommend this company to anyone traveling in the area- their hospitality and experience is unmatched.
We did a 20 minute 2 glacier flight today. It was absolutely amazing. I was very nervous but I was looked after so well and the safety procedures and care taken put me at my ease. Words can express what a wonderful experience it was and the memories we have made. This is a small family run business and they have gone out of their way to make sure we could this as we were unable to do it yesterday because of cloud. They kept in touch throughout yesterday and today to let us know when a window of opportunity was available. Highly recommend booking direct with the company. You will not be disappointed.
An amazing experience. Therese and Michael went above and beyond to take us up just as the sun was setting, and it was beautiful. A true highlight of our trip to NZ.
Great company to go with, owners are a married couple Trace and Michael. They go above and beyond for their customers and ensure you have the best experience possible. We went up with our 1yo as a family and will definitely come to visit again
We had an amazing experience with Therese and Michael flying over the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers & did a snow landing. It was a highlight of our trip here and really special. From the moment we walked in Therese was extremely friendly and helpful explaining the different tour options. I had actually initially gone up the road and the customer service at another business felt less friendly and personable. When I walked in to Mountain Helicopter’s, Therese was extremely friendly, told me about our tour options and what the better choice might be for the weather that day. We did the snow landing for $20 extra bucks and it was so extremely worth it. Michael was a fantastic pilot, he navigated changing weather making safe decisions and delivering a fantastic experience all at once. The price for what we got was well worth it. I’d really recommend booking with them!
We LOVED this tour. The view of the mountains was breathtaking! The pilot did a good job of pointing things out. When we landed on the snow, he made a point of making sure we got good photos and an unobstructed view. For the trip back down, he switched everyone's seats around so you got a different view. I highly recommend doing this tour. The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the front office staff. She was incredibly difficult to work with. She was clearly very nervous about the weather (wasn't sure we'd be able to go). She kept telling us to calm down (we were calm), the never managed to directly answer any questions we had. She told us to come 2 hours early because she might be able to get us on an earlier flight (she later admitted that an earlier flight wasn't ever a possibility). We just found her very hard to deal with. Fortunately the pilot and the tour more than made up for her shortcomings.
Thank you Therese for accommodating our family’s last minute booking. Respect to a 27yr family-run business, with caring and empathetic customer service. We enjoyed our flight, a great way to appreciate the stunning glacier+landscape. Hope your family business continue to grow and prosper.

It’s a wide trail for half of the distance, then it gets a bit narrow and steep on the second half. The tunnel was interesting with water flowing about ankle high. Quite worth the time. The tunnel is about 100 m long, and it’s a dead end with glow worm at the very end of it. Kids above 4 yrs old is accessible
What a great track! It was a rainy day in Franz Josef, but you can do this track anyway. There was about 10cm of water in the tunnel, so remember to wear waterproof shoes.
What an unexpected adventure! Walk leading to the cave is bit rocky but nothing too dangerous. Part of the walk is currently closed, but we were able to get to the end of the first cave, then it stops with wooden beam. The tunel itself is filled ankle hight with cold water, it’s doable barefoot. Right at the end is nice surprice in the shape of glow worms. Highly recommended track.
Great hike, about 1 hr 20m return. Tunnels at the end of the hike very creepy, ankle deep in water and absolutely no light. Would recommend if you love hiking and history, as well as an adventure!
This was an unexpected amazing pitstop. If you love scenic walks with a sense of adventure this is for you. Our round trip was 1hr 15mins and we really took our time in the tunnel. The tunnel is super comfortable in terms of width and height for the average folk. It was winter when we went so I imagine the water was icy, we wore ankle boots and our feet stayed dry. To those who want to see glowworms, occasionally turn off your lights and look up. We saw soo many and it was truly magical!
Fantastic!! Did it with my 5 & 3.5 year old. 55 mins to the tunnel slow walking gentle climb beautiful bush. 15 mins each way to end of tunnel where there’s glow worms. Took our gumboots which was perfect. Head torches necessary. Ankle deep water mostly. 2hr 40 min total for us. Do it!! Kekrerū & even a white fantail.
The DOC return time is about accurate. You follow a well maintained old 4WD track up to some man-made tunnels. If you're lucky enough, you can spot some cave wetā in their unique habitat. And of course, there are glow worms further down the tunnel. Bring jandals and a good head torch. The water is pretty cold, but we went in April and didn't find it as icy as some have claimed. The walk in the tunnel itself isn't very long, as a section has been closed off. It definitely gives you a sense of adventure.
Amazing tunnel walk, ankle deep water on a good day so open shoes are recommended if you are going in, the water is pretty cold but only gets ankle deep at the deepest part. The ending of the tunnel has been fully boarded up and you can't leave the end of the tunnel any more which is a shame but safety is important. Would definitely recommend this walk to everyone so long as you can get up the short but steep hike

Great, easy walk. Good views of Fox Glacier. We took the south trail.
I’ve travelled extensively across the South Island for 2 months and visited many information centres, but the ranger, a lady from this centre, was by far the most informative and knowledgeable person I’ve met. She not only had deep insight into the local area but also provided valuable information about other regions of New Zealand. Her kindness and willingness to share made me feel truly welcome in Franz Josef 😊❤️. Thanks to her, my visit was even more enjoyable. I’ll definitely return in the future!
The restaurant itself was lovely and the staff were nice. The food let them down. We ordered the pork crackling to start. These didn’t have much flavour and were really hard to eat. Felt like they were going to break my teeth. I had the ribs and my partner had the beef and bacon burger. The portions are just too big. Me and my partner could have shared my ribs meal for sure. The taste wasn’t too bad, pretty average.
Amazing staff and experience here. Christina was so helpful and literally so patient. Highly recommend stopping here before heading out for a tramp!
We would like to thank the young woman who was staffing the desk this morning, November 14. Our heli-hike was canceled due to weather so we walked down to chat with her about other options. She pointed us in the direction of some great hikes, gave inside information not otherwise on the maps and then gave us more information about our future destinations. She was outstanding and reflects on the DOC and country wonderfully. Thank you.
We came to the visitor center to get information about hiking. The girl who helped us today, November 4th, around 9 am, I think deserves an award for being the best employee at Doc! Haha, she helped us a lot and gave us all the information we needed.
The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre is located on Cron Street and is open from 8.30am to 5pm daily. This is a good place and opportunity to find information and maps on area hikes, weather, road conditions and other general travel information you might need. There are also gifts, souvenirs and plenty of brochures for other areas of South Island that you may intend to visit during your travels. Staff are on hand to answer travel related questions you have. Note: the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre is located in the same building as the local i-Site, which can also help you will activity and tour arrangements as well as local accommodation and dining options.
Some good walks to the viewing point and in the area of the glacier

A lovely little shop filled with quality gifts and trinkets. Really good if you wanted to get a good quality item that is carefully crafted.
19/11/23: Gift shop now located inside the Matheson Café. This building is closed. Opening hours of café 8:30am-3pm. Could see a few items through the windows but much smaller amount than would've been in gift shop. If you're looking for a wide range of gifts then I'd recommend visiting one of the gift shops in Franz Josef instead.
Very nice gift shop with unique items you don't see at other gift shops. Definitely worth a visit! Had a nice chat to the lady that worked there.
Not too expensive but gallery is a little disappointing, especially in such an inspirational place there's some room for improvement
Gallery is a bit of a stretch but this is a good gift shop with a nice range of reasonably priced items. Some usual tourist tat but plenty of quality items too. Lovely prints by Bridget Hall available here.
Nice gift shop with quality items at different price points. Friendly lady at the register
Disappointing. Sign on door says closed, open at 8:30am. Guess not open anymore. 3:00pm Monday so hours need updating on Google profile. No hours in window. Menu looks good though and would be a beautiful spot if open.
Lots of souvenirs. Some deals to be had if you look around, managed to find a decent beanie at a good price. Friendly staff.

Park at the Franz J car park, direct path walk past the lake! Absolutely worth it even on bad weather! We were in rain clouds up there and could not see the glacier but the hike it self is challenging, beautiful, many bridges, steep limestone paths with moth forrest and many water falls. Be in good shape with good legs, plenty water and some snacks with.
This hike is truly incredible! Along the way, you'll encounter numerous bridges and staircases built into the mountainside. The trail mostly winds through dense jungle, but it eventually opens up to a breathtaking platform with stunning glacier views—weather permitting. Please be cautious on rainy days, as the trail is mostly off-road and can become extremely slippery. At the start, you'll find a warning sign detailing past fatalities on this route, emphasizing that this is not an easy hike. However, on clear days, with proper hiking gear, it's absolutely manageable—and well worth the effort!
A beautiful but challenging hike. Starts easy and get’s harder the closer you come to the end. As we went back down light rain started so it was really slippery and we fell several times. Took us 2,5 hrs to go up und 2,5 hrs down. Make sure you wear GOOD and waterproof hiking shoes.
One of my favourite hikes. Done a lot of hikes, this is one of the most beautiful ones. Not to hard, beautiful scenery along the track and amazing views. Highly recommend it, just take your time and it'll be fine.
Challenging hike but not too hard if you take your time. Lots of uneven ground and walking on and over big stones, there is 3 swing bridges that feel really safe. The trail is very interesting and fun with lots to see along the way. It took me and my partner just over 4 hours to complete the round trip, and we're moderately fit. The Glacier at the end is worth the hike, Do it before it's gone for good!
Really enjoyed this track had no problems doing it a day after heavy rain
An incredible, but challenging hike 🥾🏔️ From the carpark, the start of the walk is about 30 minutes away, then the return hike is 5 hours. This walk is for experienced, well-equipped hikers only! The terrain is challenging, and it's uphill 90% of the way. You have to cross a few waterfalls, make sure your boots are waterproof. As for any hike, plan ahead, check the weather, pack for any eventuality, bring some lunch to enjoy at the top! 🙃 The view from the end point is just fantastic! There are a few view points along the way with great views of the valley. And the suspension bridges, and cliff-side steps make the trek fun! ☺️
roberts point is a really fun day hike through lush forests, along interesting (built) features, and with a great view of the glacier at the end. We did this hike on the 10th of december in the morning, spent about 5 hours on the trail, and encountered multiple others on the hike. There was sufficient space (and toilets) at the car park. The hike itselfs starts out easy, and gradually becomes more intense after the first suspension bridge. Some parts were very slippery, however there is limited danger of falling far down. The path is very rocky and has multiple bridges and stairs, along with some easy rock scrambles. Dont forget to wear some waterproof shoes as you need to cross multiple waterfalls and puddles. Aside from the view of the glacier close to the carpark on the beginning of the hike, the only other view is at the viewing platform at the end of the hike. it is still quite far from the glacier however, and the only way to get closer is by helicopter. The fun of the hike itself makes up for it though and we definitely enjoyed it. I would rate this hike moderate if you are prepared for it, and hard if you come unprepared expecting an easy stroll.

A short walk up to and well worth it. A sneak look at the glacier and wonderful reflections in the kettle lake.
Very average. I agree with a previous review, this place should be called peters puddle. Wasn’t worth the 20 min walk. Photo is awfully flattering.
Great smooth path. Parking up the end dont park with the others at Alex knob. Its nice seeing old boys walking for excesise in such a sunning place. Specially when I saw a kid in a car who didnt wanna walk and instead was offered a phone. Pool is small. Go when there is no wind.
Beautiful and peaceful lake. Perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. Loved the views
This lovely almost level walk on a gravel path through the woods took us 30 minutes return, and that included 5 minutes at the pool shooting the reflections. There aren’t views of the Franz Josef Glacier from the pool, but you can catch some nice distant ones from the parking lot.
Absolutely stunning! We got there around 10 AM and expected it to be ripply by then, but in fact it was perfectly still and mirror-like. It’s a pretty easy walk there and back from the Franz Josef Glacier Car Park, but it’s definitely worth doing the full Douglas Walk/Te Ara A Waiau Walkway loop track if you have time.
This short walk to Peters Pool starts at the main Franz Josef car park. It winds through the rainforest to a small kettle lake, which was formed by ice melting amongst a glacial moraine. Kettles are depressions left behind after partially-buried ice blocks melt. Many are filled with water, and are then called "kettle lakes". It should take around 25 minutes return.
It's such a beautiful location. I took this photo in 2011 and still think how blessed I am to have been there on such a pristine morning.

A great option for a wet or dry day. Amazing footage of the incredible places and things around here.
Such wonderful footage excellent photography. Would have appreciated more sub titles with location name Bit disappointed that the last photo looked very much like an introduced pest to New Zealand (possum). And I do think the deer shown was introduced. Any chance of replacing with native New Zealand animals
I loved the document. It was raining the day we came and this provided us with really nice experience nevertheless. 15 NZD per person. I think its worth the money as a backpacker. If you are short on money to book the whole flight, this is the thing you may have been looking for.
My girlfriend and friend decided to take a flight with Alpine Adventures to see Franz Josef. They absolutely loved it and got some really great photos from the top. Having visited most of the places offering flights in Franz Josef, we found Alpine Adventures to be the most sincere which is why we ended up going with them. My girlfriend and friend would highly recommend them.
Absolutely amazing! The staff were kind and very helpful.
