I took the Perfect Day boat tour of the Poor Knight islands marine reserve and it was spectacular!! We saw dolphins, manta rays, a seal, bait balls and more birds than I can remember. The crew was friendly and helpful, the boat afforded us great views, they served lunch, and the captain navigated with ease through natural arches and even into a cave!
I had a wonderful time on the Perfect Day. Equipment was great. The crew was outstanding. Wonderful safety practises. They fed us lunch, provided warm showers onboard, and took us through some amazing rock tunnels and caves on the return trip. They took pictures for us (still not clear on how we access them, but working on that). They were even flexible and accommodating with me just showing up a day early and changing my trip. I highly recommend this company.
We learned how to dive here over the past couple of days (Open Water Diver, PADI qualifications). It was honestly great! The entire staff was really helpful and supportive, the rides out to the Poor Knights Islands were so much fun and diving there was just magical! We saw amazing stuff (rays, hundreds of fish, we swam with a seal, saw dolphins while we were on the boat,...) and it is so great that we are now able to dive more often, awesome! Special shout-out to our instructor, Charlie! We had a blast during the courses and learnt a lot. It was amazing to feel totally safe in the water, even with 15 metres of seawater on top of us, thanks for that!
We went on the snorkelling cruise to the Poor Knights with 75 others. An exceedingly well organized young crew and captain were professional, safety minded, engaged and focused on everyone having a great safe time. A bucket list item executed to perfection. Well done company & crew.
Once again we visited Tutukaka and found an extremely professional partner in Dive Tutukaka for diving around the Poor Knight Islands. The base is super organized and the team is super friendly and helpful. There is good space on board the boats for equipment and to move around. We had a separate guide for our small group, which was perfect for being able to take photos in peace and yet experience a guided dive. We ordered a small lunch and were thrilled with the size and quality. Thanks for that. After each dive the captain took the boat between the islands and we were also in a large grotto. A great experience. Despite the fact that we were here in November, we saw eagle rays, stingrays, a small shark and a lot of fish. A great experience! We'll definitely be back! Thanks for the great service!
Great Dive company. Friendly and experts at what they do. Very modern and large boats ensure comfort and safety. I like that this is a dive company that insists on safety. Went out on a pretty rough day with heavy seas but dived in the calmer bays. After tropical diving getting used to a 7mm wetsuit was not easy as every movement heavier and of course more weights. Dive guide (to my shame I forgot his name) but dived in a dry suit with headband. Proffesional and personable. A pleasure to dive with. First dive was 60 minutes and while still plenty of air left it was a cold 19 degrees so time to get out. 2nd Dive was at middle arch and is a site not to be missed. I originally gave 4 stars but change to 5. My 4 was due to relatively high pricing but that's unfair as is NZ pricing. I would have loved a sunny warm day but that was not to be however I could not fault Dive Tutukaka at any point. Land staff excellent, Captains excellent, Equipment excellent and boats superb. Dive guides and boat crew proffesional and friendly and safety always checked. The Poor Knights is one of the World Dive sites not to be missed. And Dive Tutukaka is a great way to ensure a perfect day.
What an amazing diving experience from booking, to checking, to kitting out to on board briefings to great dive guides and crew on board. They are all so professional, welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable it could not have been better. I have dived all over the world and this probably my best days diving experience. I highly recommend this dive company. Throw in the Poor Knghts Islands as the backdrop and you have the makings of a perfect day. Thank you so much to you all.😀
An absolutely incredible diving experience! From start to finish, the team was professional, welcoming, and made me feel completely safe every step of the way. The crew were warm, inviting, and had a great sense of humor, which made the whole day relaxed and stress-free. Getting to dive the Poor Knights Islands was a dream – an awe-inspiring location with breathtaking underwater scenery. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

We went to dive with Yukon’s crew to Poor Knight Islands and it was absolutely amazing! They were on time to meet with us and do all the preps to go to dive! They gave us the Right wetsuit for each one, explained to us how to use it, the security norms on board and under the sea and showed us a catalog with all kind of marine life we could find deep down. Once we get to the first point to go down the crew explained the signals and instructions to be safe under the sea. We got the Try dive plan and it was perfect because we were guided hand to hand for a member of the crew and they were very dedicated and keen to give us the best diving experience! Once finished the first immersion, they took us sailing around the islands where we were astonished with those rock formation and arches! And of course we did a second immersion with the crew! The made us feel safe and enjoy the first time so why not to do it again? Excellent service and attention, hot water on board for shower and hot drinks to warm up you after diving. Thank you so much Yukon and your crew!
We chartered the Arrow out to Poor Knights for a one day snorkel/ dive trip with Paula and Herb. The staff was brilliant and the diving was great. The reserve is a treasure. I followed up with gear and tank hire a few days later for a private dive. Jo and Noel couldn’t have been more helpful and prices were reasonable. Thanks team. Would strongly recommend. 👍
Yukon Dive! Wow! The live aboard experience that the Poor Knights deserves! Noel, Jo & Nahuel were professional and friendly hosts and their hospitality almost matched how amazing the Knights are to dive. This is the second time we’ve spent the weekend on Pacific Hideaway and it won’t be the last. Thanks again team!
I went on a three day live aboard with Yukon and it exceeded my expectations! We had so much quality diving packed into three days. The skipper was super knowledgeable and generous with his fuel! He took us on some great sightseeing missions on our surface intervals. The Pacific Hideaway boat was really comfortable and felt homely. The diving was a great mix of wall, cave (open), wrecks and night diving. The guides where caring and pointed out some amazing critters! Oh and the kai that was alway ready to plate up when we surfaced was delicious.
Yukon Dive in Tutukaka takes people out to snorkel and dive in the wonderful underwater world around Poor Knights Island. The staff were very friendly and welcomed everyone onto the little ferry. You could hire the equipment for your underwater experience or bring your own. From about 8:55AM Yukon Dive took us out to Poor Knights Island in about 1.5 hours, it was a bit of a bumpy ride which was hard for me as I get motion sick, but otherwise it is very comfortable on the ferry and there was many places to sit for the 12-15 people aboard that day. The crew also gave us hot drinks and small snacks during the tour, but we had to bring our own lunch aboard. They took us to two locations to snorkel and dive and both places were rich with forests of coloured seaweed and fish, starfish and other small sea animals. There was even tropical fish there which had migrated to here. As it was mid summer the sea temperature was 19 to 21 degrees celsius, but it was still necessary to wear a wet suit to keep warm and keep afloat. The amount of underwater life we saw was very amazing, as it is not a tropical region and winter here is a little cold. After our two underwater experiences, the Caption took us on a tour around parts of the island, in a cave and told us many stories and history of the area (a Maori tribe once lived on the island up until the 1800s), we also saw sea birds such as shags, terns, sea gulls and gannet who were probably fishing in the area. The crew said sometimes dolphins are can also be seen on the tour. We returned back to the mainland at 4:00PM. It was definitely a worthy and top NZ experience, although a little expensive at $190 per adult, but you will be rewarded with abundant sea-life and a look into the water world not often seen.
We did the Try Dive and absolutely loved our trip! The crew was very professional and friendly and took good care of us. After the first dive we decided to do a second dive and it was amazing. Our guide took the time to explain the equipment and showed us everything underwater. In conclusion; we highly recommed Yukon Dive for your divetrip to the Poor Knights. Thanks again!
Great dive company with solid dive masters and skippers that know a lot about the dive spots and history/details of the Poor Knights Islands. Boats are not too crowded and are well equipped. (Also tea/coffee to keep warm.) If you can, plan multiple days to dive at the Poor Knights Islands, ensuring you see many different sides of the Island and different dive spots. (and in case of bad weather/rough sea)
Can't recommend these guys enough. I've been diving with Noel and Jo for about 8 years now, and they have been nothing but amazing the entire time. They really know their dive sites, they are so accommodating whether you're a newbie or a pro, and they make you feel welcome. I just came back from a three-day liveaboard trip with them, and it was heaven. Beautiful dive sites, a lovely tour around the Bay of Islands and the Poor Knights, and the food was fantastic! If you're up in Tutukaka and looking to explore the Knights, you can't go wrong diving with Yukon.

Amazing day, amazing staff and amazing place. Big thanks to Nick, Ruby, Liam and Grace for being wonderful all day and making our experience perfect. As a Whangarei local this was a first time and unlocked a new love for the area. Would highly recommend this tour for all abilities. Everything was arranged well and super easy. The day flew by and I can’t wait to do it again.
We really had the perfect day! Both the boat trip and the snorkelling were amazing. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. They created a great experience for my parents who never snorkelled before. We saw so many fish and did some stand up paddling. When sailing around the islands, they give you some information about the islands, its history, point out some animals, … and we even saw a dolphin on the way back. Big thanks to the whole crew!
What a fabulous day! There was quite a swell out on the crossing but our skipper, Hunter, handled the sea well and found a sheltered anchorage for us to snorkel. Crystal clear waters, large schools of trevally and schnapper, gorgeous kelp all waited for us below. Back on deck we were served a delicious lunch (even catered for out GF needs) and good coffee, Hunter took us into the largest sea cave in the world (amazing!!) and gave us a very informative talk as we cruised around a small section if the islands. The staff were fantastic, checking in often to make sure we were OK. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Worth the effort, for sure. I’d like to come back and do some diving next time. Thank you for such a memorable day!
Just got back from the Poor Knights Islands cruise. It was a pretty good day. The positives were the young skipper who was very knowledgeable and respectful of the area. The sea cave which was amazing and the rock formations. The snorkelling was good. The fish came right up to me. The Negative was the lunch. Not platters as promised just a sandwich each, a fruit bowl and a chocolate. Tea and coffee and packet soup. For $245 each, I expected a bit more. All in all, a good day but not perfect.
This was an awesome day out. We had cloudy skies and no rain so happy it didn't get over hot. Professionally run trip by all staff with a basic but yummy and all you need lunch. I went snorkeling and really enjoyed that experience very much. Also enjoyed going into a cave and through a hole in the rock while still on boat
Wonderful day out. So many things to see and a variety of activities. The snorkelling at Poor Knights is superb. Many animals and colours to see in the rocks. The caves are a real different experience to snorkel into and to go in with the boat. A very well-organised and well-staffed day. I’ve been on lots of boat trip but this was one of the best - it ran so smoothly, was very enjoyable and the food was great too. Thanks
Had an amazing time. Staff were incredible and made our experience of seeing Orcas one to remember forever (a very rare occurrence). They swam around and under our boat and we had a magical 45mons to watch them. The snorkelling was also great and the food was great. Highly recommend.
This was a really great day. Weather wasn’t as warm as we might have expected at this time of year but I wasnt going to let that stop me from snorkeling. I’m 72 and this was my first time. The crew were really friendly and helpful and although I was scared I knew I was in safe hands. It’s a marine reserve too so there was lots to see. The islands are amazing viewed up really close and on the way home we were escorted ( at different times) by two different kinds of dolphins. Magic!

So nice and you should spend some time there. I had to go forward but will stop here every time again. Lovely beach, nice area for relaxing and having a wonderful view.
Such a lovely beach, even tried walking up the track that said to whale Bay but didn't go that far. Whale Bay track was too far from the car. The track to Mermaid pools was closed so couldn't see that or go there.
Matapouri Bay can not be described in words or pictures. It's approximately 35km from Whangarei town and its worth driving along Ngunguru, Tutukaka to Matapori Bay. It is also home to NZ's famous Mermaid Pools. The beach is very popular during summer with loads of parking. There is a river before entering Matapouri Bay driving from Tutukaka, it is stunning itself and you can swim or kayak in the river. There is a fish and chips shop and few non-powered camping grounds within walking distance. No fuel stations, ATM, liquor or grocery shops in town so make sure to bring with you. 100% recommended.
We hiked up to the mermaid pool and though the terrain was slightly rough (there are ropes alongside the tougher inclines to help you up and down the route) it was absolutely worth it! The waters were slightly cold but refreshing :)
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Matapouri Beach in New Zealand, and I must say, it was an absolute delight. From the moment I set foot on the pristine sands to the stunning vistas that surrounded me, this beach is truly a hidden gem. First and foremost, the natural beauty of Matapouri Beach is awe-inspiring. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are perfect for swimming, and the soft, golden sands are a dream to walk on. The beach is surrounded by a lush coastal landscape, with rolling hills and dramatic cliffs adding to the overall picturesque scene. I couldn't help but feel at one with nature as I soaked in the breathtaking views before me. What sets Matapouri Beach apart from others is the peaceful and serene ambiance. It is not as crowded or bustling as some of the more popular beaches in New Zealand, allowing visitors to truly relax and unwind in privacy. Whether you are seeking solitude or looking to spend quality time with loved ones, this beach offers the perfect setting for both. Another highlight of Matapouri Beach is its impressive array of activities and amenities. From water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding to beautiful walking tracks, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The beach also boasts excellent facilities, including clean public restrooms and picnic areas, making it ideal for a day out with family or friends. Furthermore, the local community is warm and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience at Matapouri Beach. The friendly locals offer helpful suggestions on nearby attractions and are always ready to lend a hand or provide any necessary information. Their genuine hospitality only enhances the enjoyment of visiting this stunning beach. In conclusion, Matapouri Beach in New Zealand is an absolute paradise that deserves all the praise it receives. The combination of jaw-dropping natural beauty, tranquility, and a range of activities and amenities makes it unbeatable. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply someone in need of relaxation, Matapouri Beach is the perfect destination. I cannot recommend it enough, and I am already eagerly planning my return visit.
Amazing place, white sand and blue water... the walk to the mermaid pools is very worth it
Amazing beach and hike over to Mermaid Pools. Was gutted to see people left trash behind so take a bag to bring rubbish back with you like we did.
Awesome white sand beach and not to over crowded.

This is a great little walk if you’re in the area. You can only cross at high-tide, but bring a snorkel if you go at low tide. The waters are super clear and refreshing. It can be very punishing on a hot day as it’s very exposed in parts - and be prepared for stairs.
An excellent walk. It is quite steep to go all the way to the lighthouse. However, a shorter, less strenuous walk provides beautiful views of the coastline and Tutukaka harbor.
Worth the visit. Go at low tide. Take togs for a swim. The beach is stunning.
Google Maps tells you to use a private road to get to the car park - that's the right way to go. But there is also a way to walk to Landowners Lane from the marina car park. The walk to the lighthouse begins on a fairly level grassy path before descending the steps to the lighthouse. Check the timetable to make the crossing 2 hours before or after low tide.
Check the tide times before! We didn't, but were lucky it was low tide. The walk was short and steep, west grippy shoes as its a little slippery. Amazing views from the lighthouse, could see all the islands!
Just want to add to what has already been said by many: I walked it 1 hour before low tide time and it must be walkable at least within 2 hours before and after low tide, I think. Island part of it is muddy after rain. My picture shows what the lowest part of the track looks like exactly at low tide time.
This Walk is a very nice scenic trip to the edge of the ocean, well worth it for anyone to try. It leads up a small path to a modern (meaning unmanned) lighthouse with beautiful views over the ocean, the nearby islands and the land. I highly advise bringing solid footwear as the path is very muddy at times and not suited for street shoes. Also: Check the tide before going. At high tide the path is inaccessible without having to swim. The views and the experience is well worth it though. It's not a difficult track and very enjoyable. Can highly recommend.
Great walk! Easy walk, step rise at the end heading up to the light house. The walks suggests approximately 1hour. Highly recommend checking tides and going at low tide. Wear decent shoes for crossing the rock platform.

We enjoyed every minute of our kayak paddling tour near the mangrove area and around Limestone Island. Mark explained handling the boat patiently and gave us useful information about the area. We landed on the island and discovered wildlife and the history of the place. We took a swim at a nice beach and had a picnic. Thanks Mark for the nice chat afterwards. See you in Hamburg!
Amazing scenery, nice and sheltered from the wind. Our guide grew up in the area and was very experienced.
We had a great day with Mark, I so love New Zealand 🇳🇿 the hospitality and views are always amazing 🤩... A great coffee at the end...
Mark provided my husband and I a wonderful kayaking trip up Ngunguru River and Waitoi creek. He pointed out birds, trees and plant life along the way. Always considering our safety, he ensured that we had a great time. As inexperienced kayakers, this was a terrific trip.
A few years ago we went kayaking with Mark and Sharon around Limestone Island and had a great time. These people are really excellent tour guides. Highly recommended.
Brilliant trip out from Parua Bay to Mcleods with Mark. Everything provided for a safe and educational trip for our family, including a picnic! We'll definitely be going again....
Mark is a great local that provides a safe, fun and informative tour of the area that we kayaked in. This was one of the highlights of our trip in New Zealand.

This HAS to be your destination in Tutukaka for all things surf, including great advice from owner and all round great bloke Simon! He’s got boards with history on the ceiling .. and an outstanding range of surf gear and unique Tutukaka-branded clothing and memories.
I recently visited Tutukaka Surf Shop and I had an amazing experience! Jo was incredibly helpful and pleasant, making my visit truly enjoyable. The atmosphere in the shop is welcoming. I left with exactly what I needed and a big smile on my face! I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for quality surf equipment and top-notch service. All the the for 2025, Cheers, Lynette
Walked into the store for a notebook, left on the way to a sudden surf-lesson. We had a great experience as first time surfers with Tutukaka surf, and a special thanks to Rosa! She showed the 'moves' in a pedagogical way and gave us helpful tips before she let us experiment with them ourself. The balance of letting us get comfortable versus being hands on with the teaching was just the perfect amount!
We had 3 private surf lessons with our instructor Kiana and it was great fun. We learnt a lot. Many thanks to her!
Our granddaughter loved her school holiday lessons. Great beach for learning & a super friendly team. Couldn't believe how quickly all the kids were riding the waves.
Great teachers, they got my three kids all up an riding and also gradually got them out the back to catch bigger ones. They did this safely and all three had a great time. Already wanting to go back for more. Highly recommended surf instructors.
Staff really helpful in helping me choose a board, and they stock the Spooked Kooks range made from recycled plastic which I was so happy to come across!
My friend and I were visiting from the states in November. We stumbled upon the shop and the staff were extremely friendly. We bought some merch and stayed to chat with them for about a half hour. We still think about their friendliness today and appreciate all the recommendations they gave us for beautiful NZ. A great place to go!

Beautiful food, wonderful service and a great view. Best burgers on the coast! The staff there put up with alot of inconsiderate and rude customers but still deliver quality food and service. My family and friends always get service with a smile. Treat people with respect and kindness and you will receive that in return 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Good menu selection. Friendly service. Delightful outdoor dining right beside the harbor.
Good ambience and location, food average and cold beer. But sadly let down by rude food staff with bad attitude. Never seen such poor behaviour. The bar staff were no better. We wanted to drink more and buy t-shirts but wete happy to bail and go somewhere else. Lift your game!!
Have been coming here every summer for 15 years, such a shame that this time the food staff when ordering where rude, angry and unhelpful and then to top it off you could hear them talking lounding about the customers from the kitchen. These girls personalities may not suit hospitality and I maybe better suited to telemarketing?? Bar staff where fantastic as always
Unfortunately the battered fish, scallops and chips were all disappointing for $30 plus meals. More attention to flavour would be great.
Beautiful place to have lunch with friends and family. I had some lunch with my family, the quality their food was fantastic and next to it you get a lovely harbour view. This place has also live music and no extra fees where needed. Their staff members where very friendly and helpful to inform you about their selection of fresh food they served. I really enjoyed my time and recommend this place. Ps there is also a big parking area for everyone to park their car.
Was the best meal and a beer I’ve had in some time . It ain’t got a Michelin star but does a good job as a club . Staff very pleasant and beautiful location

Fantastic 3N stay in Jan 2023 even when tropical cyclone Hale was ravaging the East Coast and the weather was wet and windy. Luxurious rooms and bedding. Fantastic views from the bedrooms. The well equipped kitchen was gleefully used by my son who whipped up meals from local produce. Exploring the valleys on both sides of the premises was a treat in itself! Enjoyed the company of their livestock (esp the Kunekune pigs)
My husband and I had a fantastic stay, it was our favorite accommodation during our long New Zealand trip! The owners and manager were so kind and helpful and both the apartment and the property were stunning, we didn't want to leave!
Incredible experience, good wine 🍷, amazing place, friendly owner and I have no words to describe the view. After a simple google «winery» on the road. We stop there with no expectation. The owner took the time to explain the wine and the life on the island. All the animal there are rescue animal and give’s a real charms to the place.
A delightful afternoon experience. The owners were very accommodating with a rather late notice visit and had the most amazing views while tasting some award winning wines. Also, there were alpacas.
Great hospitality. Beautiful location. Interesting local wines plus an award wining port. Local gin to taste too. Get out and visit this summer 2024 as cellar door closing for good soon.
If you want serenity, sleeping with open windows and listening to tidal waves, a stroll down to the sea and enjoy wide views over the Pacific Ocean: this is your destination! A little bit remote (7min drive from Tutukaka), but worth it if you want to slow down&relax. Wine tastings of their own locally produced wines on the weekends between 10am-5pm - in the next door shed!
Accommodation at the cottage is amazing. Beautiful winery. Lovely and friendly hosts. We will definitely come back.
Amazing place. Love staying here
