What a stunning place. The team of volunteers who run the place (and the experts who work there) are so passionate, excited, and knowledgeable. This place is a sanctuary in the literal sense, and in the romantic sense. The 400 year old trees, the native birds, and ducks and kiwi and... There's so much. We did the eel feeding, and the woman who talked us through it was inspiring. Great for couples, families, young kids, photographers. And the accessibility is great.
A large nature reserve with a lake, picnic and bbq areas. Clear paths and small bridges to wander through the bush. Tours and functions are available. Predominately bird life and some areas you can engage freely with them. A pleasant way to spend time with nature.
Comfortable, quiet and beautiful environment, with a great atmosphere with the sounds of birds and ducks, a good place for children to learn new things. Not suitable for dogs, as there are a lot of ducks. Two toilets there. The ducks are so welcoming, just like they are witnessing people enjoying the scenery and birds, and witnessing people having fun here. The ducks are so cute.
Such a lovely day out, so many interesting birds and knowledgeable friendly volunteers. Great place to take a picnic and spend a few hours. Feeding time with the eels is fascinating. I loved feeding the ducks and the sweet ducklings, the gecko and spending time in with the chatty kea!
This nature reserve is an absolute gem—beautiful, peaceful, and a wonderful way to experience native wildlife up close. It offers a glimpse into what the area may have looked like before human settlement, with lush bush, raised boardwalks, and gentle gravel paths that make for an easy and enjoyable walk. There are plenty of spots to sit and take it all in, perfect for quietly observing the many birds and other wildlife. The close-up interactions were a real highlight—especially with the cheeky kea and the ever-eager ducks. Kids seemed to love feeding the ducks (duck food can be bought at the visitor centre) and watching the eels during feeding time, and it's a great place for families to connect with nature in a relaxed setting. A visit here is well worth your time if you're looking to slow down, enjoy native species, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area.
What a unique and enjoyable staycation in regional Wellington! Theo’s cottage was well appointed and equipped with everything we needed including treats :) we had the whole reserve to ourselves at night and early morning which was truly amazing. The staff, wildlife and surroundings were of high quality and I highly recommend the kiwi encounter, eel feeding, bird talk and accommodation. Thanks for hosting us this weekend team.
This place is cool. Love the nature walk and being able to get so close to the birds. The young Kea is cheeky and jumped on my lap.
We stayed at Theo’s Cottage and did the kiwi experience. The guides and staff were awesome. The cottage was simple and cute. It’s clear everyone here cares a lot about the kaupapa. A classic kiwi experience that we really enjoyed.

Small area for parking, however, a beach that is generally not overly crowded.
Peka Peka beach just beautiful, not enough signs and very lost. Especially walking on the beach from coastal dunes
One of the best beaches in New Zealand!!!
Cool expansive long sandy Beach. Lots of cars come and drive on to their spots. Has good waves for bodyboarding. Really clean looking feeling sand/water. This may be one of the windier places, however, when we came here it was refreshing to have some breeze due to the heat. Not too busy and a good spot overall!
Nice beach, unpatroled though.
Good beach for dog walking and evening walk
Fantastic walk and beach

Very nice little theatre. Nice sound! Couches for two so no sore backside 😊. We had a drink while watching A Complete Unknown.
Lovely comfortable sofas with a side table on the arm. Good range of drinks and some baked goods. Friendly team. We enjoyed watching a movie here. Parking was easy and hassle free.
A quaint country cinema 🎥 in the Waikanae shopping centre with a small front of house cafe. The cafe has great coffee, hot chocolate and an assortment of baking ready made baking. The cheese 🧀 and date scones are very tasty and value for money 💰. On my next visit I hope to see a movie 🎬
Awesome movie theater. Lovely staff.
A really cool little cinema with super comfortable couches and interesting selection of films. Reasonable prices too - particularly on Tuesdays.
Great cinema, very intimate. Staff are great, nice selection of hot and cold soft drinks, alcohol and snacks. Plenty of parking out the front. Because this cinema is small the selection of what they are playing is small. Have request tickets then they call you back (I like this).
Great little cinema with cosy seating for two.
Lovely theatre, very helpful & happy staff

We had a great time looking around the museum. Very informative and interesting looking back at the past and the history of the area.
Such a nice little museum. We had a great time discovering the region history. The kind lady at the desk even shared some additional information.
I learnt that there are places that keep history easily accessible. What I great place to view the Lapiti Coast history.
The staff are so friendly and gave us a tour of how the world use to be in the 60s and 70s.
Just a little Museum, but very interesting.
Great little museum, a lot more packed into what looks to be a small building from the outside. Really good relevant local history, covers all aspects of life from the late 19 century through to the wars and early fifties. Kids loved it, staff/volunteers are passionate and knowledgeable.
Great little museum. Lots of history, pleasant staff 😀
We were surprised how much - both history and love and passion to preserve artefacts - can one find in the small museum. Hats off for the volunteers serving this free museum. We'll certainly come back to explore more.

We visited Jeannie's beautiful studio while we were in Waikanae for a work retreat. She created a bespoke, private class for us, which was tailored to our needs perfectly. Jeannie's teaching style was a great mixture of extra support for the beginners in a group, with options for those who had practiced yoga before. We all left the class feeling very relaxed! We'll definitely be back if we're in the area again. Thank you!
I have been going to Vinyasa classes with Jeannie for the last couple of years and have absolutely loved it. I was new to yoga and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Jeannie is an amazing instructor and I couldn’t recommend Our Yoga Kapiti high enough.
Jeannie is an incredible teacher. Being new to yoga, I didn't know what to expect, however she has an encouraging and non-judgmental approach that leaves you feeling confident and supported. Jeannie has a unique ability to motivate you whilst also allowing you go at a pace you are comfortable with. I would highly recommend Our Yoga to anyone.
Jeannie's encouraging and confident style led me back to yoga with great enthusiasm. I love the calm studio by the beach and Jeannie's help with perfecting the poses means there's no concern of injury so I can focus my mind and enjoy the process. As an aspiring runner who burnt out, yoga at Our Yoga is the perfect way to work on my breathing and build up my strength (hopefully helping me find my motivation to get the km's in again too!).
Had privilege of doing both Power Vinyasa and Yin yoga classes today at Jeannie’s beautiful studio at Peka Peka beach. Jeannie is an excellent instructor and creates a safe, comfortable and soulful atmosphere. All levels and ages and stages are welcome. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Awesome, chilled purpose-built Yoga Studio with an extremely helpful and friendly teacher - the best Yoga on the Kapiti Coast !
Wonderful session with Jeannie in a beautiful location ❤️
