We were so glad we made it to the glowworm caves. I can't really express how it felt. Visiting this place during the winter season was one of the best decisions. There were no tourists. We had the cave to ourselves. The guide was really knowledgeable and made the experience worth every penny. We were able to spend as much time as we wanted to inside the cave. There was no rush. It was really peaceful inside the cave. I would highly recommend this place especially during the winter season.
Highly recommend visiting the Kawiti Family Glowworm Cave! My husband and I were the only people in the tour because other guests were running late and they didn’t want to delay us! Pai was an amazing guide and so passionate about sharing the history of the cave as well as the lives of glowworms! I wasn’t sure what to expect once in the caves but it was a remarkable experience! Looking up it felt like the night sky in the cave and seeing the glowworms “fishing lines” up close was fascinating! I was also excited to finally see an eel on the way into the cave! Definitely worth checking out!
We truly enjoyed our time together here. The whole family was very happy with the tour and the surroundings. The guides were great! Make a day of it and bring a picnic too. There are toilets on site. Plenty of car parks. We will be returning when the other side opens. Thanks!
Enjoyed the visit to Kawiti Glowworm Caves. The glowworms were incredible to see up close, and the whole place felt magical. Our guide was very knowledgeable and shared the history, stories and science behind the caves, which made the experience even better. The tour was well organised, safe and easy to follow.
A real highlight of our stay in The Bay of Islands- our tour guide ‘Pi’ was a family member of this Family owned & run property & Tour.SO many glow worms throughout the cave and Pi shared both her Family & Cultural stories and her extensive knowledge of glow worms- topped off by a self guided post tour walk thru the stunning woodlands- highly recommend a visit!
Visited the Kawiti Glow Worm Caves and it was a truly stunning experience. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life — the inside of the cave was absolutely amazing. The staff were very friendly and made the whole tour even more enjoyable.
Superlatives elude me to adequately describe how enthralling the display of natural glow worm habitat was. Additionally the round rock at the entrance was equally interesting (apparently a meteorite according to our guide Marie) and even the resident eel in the cave stream was an unexpected surprise. Check for possible cruise ship shore excursions as the day after us had over 2,000 bookings to visit the cave whereas our tour was just 4 people.
A spiritual journey for my mum and I. We had a lovely tour guide who understood our needs and was quite patient. We were able to request for a shorter tour, which was the one without the bush walk. As we were the only two scheduled for our time slot, it felt like a private tour. The walk into the caves is relatively straightforward. There are handrails and anti-slip mats to reduce the likelihood of slips. You also have handheld lanterns to guide you as you walk between chambers. The stories that accompany the journey is a special touch. The toilets were super clean, albeit a 10 minute walk away. I would recommend this tour and would be retuning!

I’m so glad we stopped in Kawakawa and got a chance to see the famous Hundertwasser Toilets! They’re such a unique piece of art and definitely the town’s main attraction. Beautifully designed, quirky, and full of character — no wonder it’s one of the most photographed toilets in New Zealand!
What a quirky tourist attraction but it is definitely worth a stop - great honour to the architect who has other features along the main street. Quite unique & a bit Gaudi-ish. Behind the toilets is a beautiful gallery - not open when we visited. The town is worth a quick walk up the street as an interesting place. Check the steam railway timetable, as it was working on a Sunday with a number of guests aboard. Interestingly it chugs straight down the main street.
Unusual to say the least! Good to see it close up and personal!
Something of a talking point from our tour guide so we stopped by to see for ourselves. Interesting mosaic art making use of tile and glass bottles. Very interesting, if not busy in its sense of style. Either way, the bathrooms were very clean and well maintained, however the soap dispenser was empty.
I absolutely loved it, Absolutely! Only in Kawakawa can a toilet be this cool. The Hundertwasser Toilets are a riot of color, curves, and creativity designed by the legendary artist himself in 1999. Mosaic tiles? Check. Wavy floors? Yup. A tree growing out of the roof? Obviously. It’s part bathroom, part art gallery, and 100% worth a pit stop. Who says nature calls can't be a cultural experience?
Very unique and clean. A must stop over and photo moments. 😊
These just might be the classiest public toilets in New Zealand. They really do have a 'Wow' factor!
Must see. Truely unbelievable in a very nice way.

This is an underrated attraction on the north island - highly recommend! 5 stars ⭐️ from the cafe to the office staff to the volunteer Conductor’s their passion and TLC for this regional historical treasure shines through. It was awesome to see a part of the area we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. Great value for 2-hours of richly narrated history - thoroughly engaging! #boivintagerailway
It was great! We had a scenic, two hour ride in the diesel engine train, lovely scenery, great vintage train and we got to hear some great stories about the land and history of land and trains from Keith. Would definitely recommend to anyone closeby! Is also possible in combination with a bicycle trail/bike rental, sounds like it would be nice as well.
It's a must do! No matter how many times you have been you will always have a great experience and see different things every time. Highly recommend when up north! Worth the $. Cafe is great too! Great fun for my whānau
We didn’t have time to ride the train, but it was still great to see! This is the first railway to open in the North Island of New Zealand and the only one that runs right down the middle of a State Highway — such a unique sight and piece of history.
Outstanding from start to finish. Wonderful helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. The journey through the stunning Northland countryside is not to be missed. I look forward to when the next section is completed towards Opua. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Wow, what a special experience. Kawakawa is the only train in Northland and was built to export coals in the 1800s There are two trains running in the autumn and winter season (10am and 2pm). There are six vintage trains that are alternated. It's too bad that Gabriel, the steam train, is currently under maintenance. The return trip takes around two hours with a beautiful, scenic view. The carriages are comfortable and clean with a few options to choose from. Two seats or a long bench with windows or completely out in the open with no seat (for cyclists) The return ticket is $50 per adult. Tickets can be purchased online from the website or at the ticket office. Recommended to arrive at least 20 minutes before departure time. There is no toilet or food service on the train but you can buy drinks, snacks, and food from the train station cafe. The staff are so lovely. Jameigh, Carl, and our amazing train driver/engineer, Ryan (sorry if any names here are misspelt)
A charming ride through history! The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is a delightful experience for all ages. The beautifully restored trains, friendly volunteers, and scenic route make it feel like a trip back in time. The journey from Kawakawa to Taumarere is relaxing and full of character – especially crossing the tracks right through the middle of town! Great place to learn about local railway history and support a passionate community project. Highly recommended for families, train lovers, and anyone wanting a unique Northland experience.
Nice well organized trip. The onboard staff were friendly and knowledgeable and added to the trip
