This place is beautiful, perfect to relax, however be warm that because it's so easy to get to, small and contained that it can be busy which comes hand in hand with lots of kids. We just missed a school trip there, however a family with kids with clearly no rules and parenting showed up and start jumping in, doing bombs off the side. One lady very firmly told them to stop. It looked like it was the first in the kids life he had hurd it. Just be curtious and control your kids. Anyway, one end is shallow and gets to just over 2 meters in the deep end. There is a ledge to sit on around the sides. The rainbow spring is a short walk away and looks stunning but photos do no justice.
It's a lovely shaded spot. The water is warm and inviting. Only negative too many people🤷. Huge car park plenty of room for caravans and trailers. You can access the bistro for meals and the bar for a drink.
A lovely spot with spacious parking for day visitors. We originally planned to visit Bitter Springs, but it was closed due to a recent crocodile sighting — so this became our backup plan, and we’re so glad we gave it a go! The walk to the thermal pool was peaceful and scenic, with clear signage and a charming boardwalk through a lush palm oasis. The pool itself was smaller than expected but still serene and roomy, even with a fair crowd. The water was surprisingly warm at first but incredibly relaxing once in. Most of the pool is quite deep, so weaker swimmers should be cautious, though there are shallow edges perfect for sitting and unwinding. We didn’t stay overnight, but there are accommodation options on-site. The bar and restaurant were a great bonus — we treated ourselves to tasty calamari and barramundi fish and chips after our swim. All in all, a wonderful place to relax — highly recommended, especially if Bitter Springs is closed or overcrowded.
So disappointed, the once beautiful thermal pool taken over by bats above. The noise and smell discussting. The water was warm but the smell and droplets from above made it a quick dip and out
Don’t be fooled by these amazing hot springs, Luke warm water at best! There was a boardwalk of bat manure and the stench of bat manure was unbearable! In desperate need of a bat cull and high pressure hose! If you’re still keen to swim, make sure you have no open wounds to avoid disease! Staff will take your money without hesitation if you haven’t read this review
Beautiful well kept thermal pools. The warmest out of all the hot springs we have visited. Take a noodle float as some parts are deep. If you have energetic kids (like ours) they would enjoy the bitter springs or Katherine hot springs way more as they can move around and have a good time in the falls or current. Mataranka was more a relaxing, chilled space and we tried to maintain the peace of everyone around us, but really we were there to have a good time too. 🤪 There is plenty of parking for visitors (including caravans) Otherwise the Mataranka homestead onsite is a great overnight stop with direct access to the thermal pools.
Can't believe you can swim here at no cost. Although there is a great food and drinks bar with a souvenir shop that's a must look
I went here several times as a kid in the 80s and 90s before it was made into a cemented pool , it was full of rocks different heights so could swim out and find just the right one to sit head above water, could follow the stream down it gets hotter and hotter until I couldn't put my feet in . Some of the best memories of my childhood adventure road trip with my folks were here . The rainforest overhanging the pool kept it sheltered from the sun and the camping area had limited facilitys but always clean and well maintained . I'm sure some things have changed in 40 years. I hope to go again .

Bitter Springs & Mataranka springs are a definite do, can't drive buy. Bring your noodles & enjoy a relaxing float down Bitter Springs or just sit & enjoy your time at Mataranka. Constant 34 degrees but definitely doesn't feel like it.
Beautiful spot with lovely clean and tidy facilities
A short walk or drive from Mataranka town ..heaps to see about our past culture & way of life.. recommend a visit when in town. Great Barra fishing but please beware of the crocs close to the rivers.
Visited bitter springs thermal pool. Nice. Warm clear water. Bring a noodle to float down. 15 minute float down 3 minute walk back.
What an amazing place in the Northern Territory. We spent the first part of the morning swimming at Bitter Springs which I highly recommend. It is like something you see on TV! You don’t need to travel out of Australia to enjoy something so magical and beautiful. Water is clear. There’s a nice currant which can take you downstream if you wish to float and relax. Ample parking. Not too far to walk to the springs. Toilets are near car park.
Camped at the other campground the 1st night which was great then Mataranka homestead the next few nights. Loved the thermal pool although does get quite busy and noisy and a just a short drive to Bitter springs . This was a nice relaxing drift along the crystal clear creek. A noodle is a must to get the most out it.
Loved this. Much nicer campsites than the nearby caravan parks if you prefer space and bush. Not as close to thermal springs but right on the river for interesting walks.
Very picturesque park with good camping facilities and generous shaded sites. Plenty of interesting walks although due to increased croc alerts no swimming was permitted on my visit there. Easy access on sealed road and not too crowded (possibly due to croc alert). Feral donkeys were noisy at night

I was well and truly in my element here. I’m from the uk and never heard of ‘We of the Never Never’. However, I love visiting graveyards so to me this was just another one and I had no idea what was awaiting my arrival! This cemetery will stick with me as one of my fondest memories of the trip and I can’t wait to research more about the life of Jeannie Gunn!
Nice cemetery with some great history. Worth a visit.
Lovingly maintained cemetery showing the history of the area as well as the harships they endured. Worth a walk through. A fitting tribute.
This little cemetery is the resting place for the remarkable people who lived on Elsey Station in the 1800 s the book and the movie called we of the never never
Very well maintained, we have a special connection to William Neaves. Fantastic to see his grave looked after.
Great place to learn a little Aussie history
Very interesting to visit and wander around and soak in the history
They are maintaining the cemetery now ,which is fantastic. The graves of Esley homestead and their story and how they made a life here and living must be told and persevered. Good to see the story of the,Never Never.

We did this hike during the day and it was quite exposed so make sure you are sun smart. You will walk through a Sandy path so make sure you have proper footwear. The walk was great as you are walking along side the river which is such a great colour, the falls at the end are small but gorgeous, you can stop here and have a lovely picnic. “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.
This walk is shaded in sections and exposed in others, with sandy dry sections of trail in places. The rise over the bluff was very hot ~39 degrees but then drops back into the trees near the falls. The falls themselves were a wide section of river with about a metre or so fall (don't expect a giant drop). Go for the hike, not the falls !
A 4.5 Kilometre walk, each way, over limestone and powdery sand will get you to the falls. Take water as there isn't any on the track.
The was absolutely incredible to look at, super inviting although we were CROCSAFE 💁🏽‍♀️ we saw some wild bores drinking from small watering holes… the blue arrows directed us across some fallen trees and we didn’t feel it was right so we went back… never got to the falls but the walk 3ks in was nice enough!
Was an interesting if long 8km return walk along the Roper River to the falls. Saw a couple of fresh water crocs as well.
Long walk to waterfall. Hard to find the waterfall through the trees. Some parts very rough across rocks.
Only 2 stars because you have to walk 4 kms each way
Very beautiful - go early before it gets to hot.
