Mamayev Kurgan, located in Volgograd, Russia, was the site of intense fighting during World War II and now serves as a memorial complex honoring the Soviet soldiers who fought and perished there. The centerpiece is the towering 'The Motherland Calls' statue, standing at 85 meters tall. Originally a Tatar burial mound, Mamayev Kurgan's strategic significance led to fierce battles during the war.
This place is tremendous and memorable. It reflects every single bit of grief and sorrow. Not a place for fun at all though it's just breathtaking. Highly recommended to visit it during the dark hours, it's very well illuminated
Alex D — Google review
Simply breathtaking ! The 85m statue of the Motherland is surreal, the eternal flame with the music is really moving and the statues are marvelous ! This complex is a magnificent tribute to the more than 1 million Soviet people that died to liberate the city of Stalingrad, then leading to the liberation of Europe !

Mamayev Kurgan is a hill in Volgograd named after Mamaya, famous Tatar khan who was buried here (Kurgan is a resting place in Tatar). In more recent history this hill (among many other sites around) is famous for one of the most important battles in WWII, which changed the course of it in Europe. There are several things to explore here, and I'll list them here and explain in a separate review. Count on at least 3 hours for a visit. You can reach Mamayev Kurgan in 2 ways, depending if you want a more relaxed or more impressive approach. More impressive is taking a taxi or speed tram that will take you to the hill foot, close to the Volga river, and then climb 200 steps (200 days lasted the battle). Climbing them the statue becomes bigger and bigger and you visit other monuments along the way - reflection pool, huge stone reliefs, Eternal flame and Hall of Glory,....Beware, this requires 200 steps uphill climb plus spaces in between them. More relaxed means taking a taxi which will take you to the top of the hill where's the Motherland Calls statue, seeing it first and then descending downhill and seeing other attractions in the opposite way. The complex is totally free to visit, and I suggest coming in the morning, as the sun is shining at the statue and whole complex then, so you will have better light on your pics. We were late afternoon and the sun was behind the statue.
Dejan B — Google review
The whole complex is a must-see open air museum. Historically impressive, visually stunning and very spacious. Easily the best part of Volgograd.
Ertuğrul U — Google review
A must see if you go to Volgograd. The main statue is similarly on the level of the Statue of Liberty. This place is a pretty massive memorial complex.
MaltedBarleyFlour — Google review
A must do when in Volgograd. Must be the number one tourist site. Be prepared to be in awe of the scale. Easily accessible by public transport. Be prepared to walk but all extremely pleasant with refreshment stands all around.

Nestled in the heart of Volgograd, the Volgograd Planetarium stands as a beacon for astronomy enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. This long-established planetarium offers an array of captivating exhibits that delve into the wonders of the universe. Visitors can enjoy both daytime and evening programs, making it a versatile destination for all ages.
(Translated by Google) The Volgograd Planetarium is one of the oldest in the country. This year the planetarium turned 70 years old. The planetarium was opened on September 19, 1954, built and donated to the city by the people and government of the German Democratic Republic. The building looks monumental, crowned with the sculpture “Peace” by sculptor Vera Ignatievna Mukhina, known to everyone from the sculpture “Worker and Collective Farm Woman” at VDNKh...

(Translated by Google) The tour of the planetarium is, of course, intended more for schoolchildren than for adults. It is possible to walk around the lobby of the planetarium, without a tour, and see Stalin’s mosaic panel in the center and a couple of meteorites at the entrance. Of course, you can talk a lot about gifts from the GDR, which was restored by the USSR. But upon reflection, we can firmly say where the planetarium came from, as well as who won the Great Patriotic War. The excursion for 400 rubles is more than humanitarian, considering that there were only two of us, me and my wife. For example, an excursion to the former post office of the city of Chekhov, dedicated to Chekhov’s personal letters, which Chekhov did not even know about, cost 1,500 rubles for two. There is more material to study here. Foucault's pendulum, if you haven't seen it yet, go here. Undoubtedly, the collection of meteorites on the 2nd floor really attracted attention.

(Translated by Google) The place is very warm, the excursions are interesting. But today it was a shame: my husband and I came, the electricity suddenly went out (anything can happen), we didn't finish the program. But the staff offered an alternative: a short excursion. We decided that we would just come back another time. We didn't ask for a refund or complain. We just stood at the exit, waiting for a taxi. For some reason, the staff Elena decided that it would be right to herd everyone waiting (about 15 people plus several children) into a small hall without air conditioning in the heat of 36 degrees. Rude and very arrogant. I lost the desire to come back. Although all the other employees were very nice, polite and hospitable.

The guide gave a very engaging account of the planetarium's history, the exhibits, and the stories behind many of the paintings housed there. My family and I were also planning to go to the observatory; the tour was supposed to be the next day, but unfortunately, we were too busy to make it. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're in Volgograd.

Nestled along Ulitsa Sovietskaya, the Pavlov's House Defenders Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the fierce Battle of Stalingrad. This fortified apartment building, once home to Sergeant Yakov Pavlov and his brave soldiers, became a symbol of unwavering Soviet resistance during World War II. From September 1942 to February 1943, these defenders held their ground against relentless German assaults for an astonishing 60 days.

The Motherland Calls is a colossal statue situated in Volgograd, Russia, dedicated to honoring the country's war dead. It stands as the world's largest statue of a woman and attracts visitors from all over the globe. The surrounding area is filled with other impressive statues and monuments that make for great photo opportunities. It is recommended to visit during sunset due to the long walk required in the heat of the day, and it's best to start at the top and work your way down.
Visiting "The Motherland Calls" in Volgograd, Russia, was an awe-inspiring experience. This colossal statue, standing at 85 meters, powerfully commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad. Walking through the memorial complex, I felt deeply moved by the "Memory of Generations" reliefs and the "Grieving Mother" sculpture, which poignantly honor the sacrifices made during the battle. Climbing the 200 steps to the top, each symbolizing a day of the battle, I was rewarded with a breathtaking view of Volgograd, reminding me of the bravery and resilience of the Soviet soldiers.

About L — Google review
You can't put in words how beautiful this place is. It's an amazing memorial that you won't ever forget in your life. Even though I live in Chicago, this is the city I was born in. It was previously named Stalingrad and from what any history will tell you is that the battle of Stalingrad was most likely the bloodiest battle during World War II. The River Volga was running red with blood. Almost every building in the city was completely leveled to dust. This memorial is a commemoration to those millions of Russian who have died during World War II. Overall the whole place is beautiful in and of itself. And it has an amazing atmosphere you won't forget. The statue is said to be the tallest and most grand female statue in the world. Just standing under it and looking up will give you a sense of how small you are compared to it. All of the statues there and even the cathedral is a beautiful and eye opening place. I would definitely recommend visiting.
Albert B — Google review
A great MUST Visit spot if you ever visited the city of Volgograd in Russia The statue which is considered the biggest female statue in the world is in the center of the area which is full of other statues and other great things to see and have some lovely photos. The spot is advised to be visited near sunset as its a long walk in the sun , and also best to do it to start it from up to down , not the other way round.
Abdallah M — Google review
The grandiose monument at the top of the Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd leaves no one indifferent. Locals affectionately call him Mama, but the whole world knows the statue as "Motherland Calls!" She depicts a woman in fluttering clothes, holding a sword raised to the sky in her right hand. Appeal and rage are written on her face, her mouth is distorted with a cry, as if raising 35 thousand soldiers to attack from the memorial cemetery behind her. The creation of the outstanding Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich personifies the pain and glory of our people, delighting with strength and dynamism. The statue is a very complex engineering facility, built of pre-stressed reinforced concrete using the same technology as the Ostankino TV tower, its builder N.V. Nikitin supervised the work here as well. The sculpture weighs 8000 tons, its height is 85 m, the 33-meter 14-ton sword is made of fluorinated steel. The interior space is divided into 11 floors connected by stairs. The tension of the 116 steel ropes pulling the statue down from the inside, and the vibration amplitude of the sword, are continuously monitored by sensors.

can we feel the scale of the tragedy and heroism of the Soviet people during the great Patriotic war? Mamaev Kurgan. the larks sing, it's like weeping over the grief of all mothers whose sons and daughters were devoted to their military duty. and it does not matter on which side the soldiers fought. they paid the most valuable-their lives. and let the descendants know, let them feel, let them cry. we thank you for our peace. for what we hear singing lark, for the sun and freedom, for life!

The sculpture is second to none. Being a work of a genius, it evokes a wide range of emotions. Currently is being renovated until April, 2020. But don't be sorry if you find the view a bit obstructed. Its enormous presence is still there. And this is the first time this sculpture is being renovated almost in a century, so consider it an opportunity to see it in a different way

Definitely worth a visit when you are in town. Would take about 90-120 minutes for a proper visit. Many artifacts of war, as well as a nice animated description of the events happened. The panorama part is also pretty cool, especially if you have never seen a panorama museum before. The outdoor part right outside/behind is also a living museum, the ruined building and the famous fountain, as well as the train on the side.
Ertuğrul U — Google review
This museum is set just by the ruined mill and the entrance is beneath it, from the Volga river promenade. The museum layout is fantastic - spread over some 10 rooms clockwise depicting the WWII chronologically with an accent on the famous Stalingrad battle. Apart many weapons, uniforms and personal items displayed, most interesting I found somewhere around the middle (room 5 or 6) a huge digitalized map with amazing computer animation about the battle. At the top floor is a huge 360' diorama about the battle. Entry fee is symbolic - few Euros.

The Battle of Stalingrad Museum is one of the best in Volgograd and will require at least two hours, and preferably a good command of Russian to fully appreciare. The Lenin Monument, a striking tribute to the leader of the Bolshevik revolution, stands proudly at the southern end of Volgograd, overlooking the serene Volga River. Erected in 1960 and crafted at Moscow's Mytishchi art casting plant, this impressive statue is set in a square that bears its name today but has seen various titles throughout history.
Another beautiful monument to the leader of Bolshevik revolution, Vladimir Ilych Lenin. This one is in Lenin Square (Ленин Площадь), and has a tram station close by with the same name. Behind the monument there’s the Panorama Museum. It’s worth checking it out when you’re visiting the city.

The structure was held for 58 days, facing attacks from both German and Soviet soldiers who fought relentlessly until one side gained control. It holds significant historical value as it symbolizes human courage to survive and defend their motherland. Visitors can witness vehicles used in WWII made by Germany and Russia while exploring the site's scenes related to this mighty war.

Pavlov's House was a fortified apartment building which Red Army defenders held for 60 days against a heavy Wehrmacht offensive during the Battle of Stalingrad. The siege lasted from 27 September to 25 November 1942 and eventually the Red Armymanaged to relieve it from the siege. It gained its popular name from Sergeant Yakov Pavlov, who commanded the platoon that seized the building and defended it during the long battle.

However, the chairs are not very comfortable - at an event longer than 2 hours, the back and back of the body get pretty tired :) Otherwise, everything is great!

In principle, everything is ready for events. (Translated by Google) We celebrated the New Year's corporate party. The food is terrible. Everything is cold and stale, winded. The poor pepper had already wilted on the pizza. For 800 rubles I got one glass of wine, a washed-out “slice” of pizza and a small sandwich with fish and cucumber. Decide for yourself whether you need such a corporate event... In this wonderful place (Original) (Translated by Google) We were at a concert in an area with tables, you can order food before the performance, without knowing about it you ate in advance)) so we only ordered coffee and cheesecake, the second one turned out to be very sweet. The prices are high, of course, the public is all in pathos. The hall is not very comfortable for spectators; it is too elongated a rectangle. It was very hot in the room.

(Translated by Google) There is only one owner of the Volgograd restaurant. But...In City Hall, the windy Olivier killed me, I think decent establishments don’t allow themselves to do this. The waiters can't cope with the room. The meat was tough. The kitchen is so-so. Although they said that the best chef in the city works there. And so the score: a point for the spacious hall and stylish furnishings, parking, friendly staff. Just three at a stretch. The prices do not correspond to the actual level of service...Guys, work on yourselves...

(Translated by Google) It’s a good place, our organization holds corporate events there almost every year. Good cuisine, but there is a huge drawback... The waiters just clear the tables and it doesn’t matter if you finished the dish or didn’t even have time to try it, the only way out is not to get up from the table, and I’ll tell you this is not convenient...

They were already interactive then - the children themselves participated in the New Year's Fairy Tale! And what huge and interesting gifts they gave here! (Translated by Google) We were here for a concert. There are no complaints about the concert: the sound is good, the hall is small, but for a chamber concert it’s just right, the seats for the audience are quite crowded, but not critical, sitting is quite comfortable. But the building, the atmosphere inside, is something. The entire foyer is occupied by fur coats hanging for sale; you have to squeeze through a narrow passage. Inside, everything looks as if it hasn’t changed for 30 years. It’s a pity that such a building in the city center looks more like a train station from the 90s.

(Translated by Google) Yes, as an architectural monument in the Stalinist Empire style and a symbol of the past Soviet not-so-bad years, it should be preserved. But for the modern world this is already a very inconvenient room. Once upon a time, young and agile Komsomol members quickly ran up to the 4th floor, not noticing the steps. Yesterday, when these Komsomol members were already over 80 years old, they could barely climb the very uncomfortable, sloping steps on a not very steep slope to watch the concert. Everything is dusty and old. It is not clear how it was planned during construction to clean the walls and ceilings at a height of 15 meters? Also, don't forget to bring toilet paper with you. This is not a shopping center, they don’t make money here on paper. Well, the state has long been violet about culture (Original)
