3Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport

Airport
Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, also known as Wulumuqi Guojijichang, is a major airport in Northwestern China. It offers a wide range of international flights to cities like Almaty, Istanbul, Moscow Sheremetyevo, and Seoul Incheon. Additionally, it provides regular domestic flights to various destinations within China and regional flights to smaller cities. The airport features a variety of shops and eateries for travelers' convenience.
The new airport was amazing! Check out the newest Air China lounge you will be surprised by the food quality as well as beverage choice.
Haoge X — Google review
Airport has military base vibes - not friendly, no music, everything closes during the night, and even the lights are turned off. If you have a transfer during night time, you will die out of hunger. One of the few international airports in the world where staff don’t know even a little bit of English. I am lucky i know a bit of Chinese, it saves me, but what about regular tourists, who are just traveling. Most of the time, staff is not helpful, talks with an attitude as if you’re bothering them, and they make no effort to assist or understand you. Infrastructure is extremely poor. There’s no official luggage storage - only a corner at the reception of a capsule hotel, and even that doesn’t feel safe. Anyone could potentially grab your bag, and staff clearly isn’t excited to keep it for you. The duty-free is dull and empty - no variety, no atmosphere, nothing interesting to look at or buy. There’s no Wi-Fi available, which is ridiculous for an international airport. The interior is depressing - cold lighting, minimal decoration, and a generally unwelcoming, soulless vibe. No comfort zones, no peaceful rest areas, and definitely nothing pleasant about spending time there. Smokers beware: they confiscate lighters at the very entrance to the airport - not even at the security check. So if you step out to smoke during a long layover, you won’t even have a way to light your cigarette afterward. Just one more small, annoying detail in a long list of passenger-unfriendly rules. The security check itself is dehumanizing. I’ve gone through it multiple times and every time it feels like they’re giving you a full-body massage - except no one’s enjoying it. Zero privacy, too many people watching, and extremely thorough to the point of discomfort. Atmosphere is cold and hostile. I’ve been through this airport at least five times, and each time my layover experience was unpleasant and stressful. During one of my 20-hour layovers, I approached the China Southern Airlines transfer desk to get assistance with the free hotel stay that was shown as available in their official app - only to be told bluntly by the woman at the counter that no hotel was provided, without explanation or even an attempt to help. For comparison, I’ve transited through airports like Hangzhou and Nanjing - and they were much better. Staff was more welcoming, the atmosphere felt more relaxed, and most importantly, the security checks weren’t so absurdly strict and dehumanizing. Honestly, it’s hard to believe this is supposed to be an international hub. Avoid layovers in Urumqi if you can. It’s one of the least passenger-friendly airports I’ve ever been through.
Scorpion C — Google review
The airport is beautifully located – on clear days you can admire the breathtaking mountain ranges, which are truly massive. Like many airports in China, it is very modern, yet designed with a style that reflects its natural surroundings. It’s important to note that the passenger volume here is huge – around 32 million travelers this year. Security checks are very thorough. Power banks and lighters are prohibited, and sometimes passengers may even be called back to inspect their checked luggage after it has already been handed over. Patience and allowing extra time for the process are highly recommended. For those who do not speak Chinese, communication may be challenging, so planning ahead is important. The airport itself is vast, and walking from security to the most distant gate can take up to 15 minutes.
Andrzej S — Google review
Arrive early as you have to go through extensive and intensive luggage checks. My advice is to put all, and I mean all, electronics in a separate bag for easier checking at the security, otherwise they would ransack your checked and hand carry luggage at different points. They are very thorough. Having said that, the security staff are polite and patient even with long queue of annoyed passengers. Body search is a real body check, by touching different parts of your body with their hands. Once inside the international departures, there aren't many shops with a Burgers King (also selling noodles!), it has very slow and inefficient service. Once the kitchen brings out the food at the counter, everyone goes for it. You have to organize among yourselves as the staff does not help and does not know what to help.
Ming T — Google review
Top modern Airport. The service offers and shops are average. New launches and good Airport services. Modern and clean toilets.
Andreas W — Google review
Passengers are advised to come early as going through immigration is rather strict. Quite a lot of eateries and shops available
YC K — Google review
Arrived here in September recently on China Eastern airline for a 12-day tour of Xinjiang. The airport is new and no need for immigration as it was already done in Beijing.
Google L — Google review
Very big airport. There are restaurants including MacDonald, cafes, gifts and electronic shops. There's also Tax refund office but it's located inside the terminals, while the customs is before the before control. So if you need to put a custom's stamps on your paper for tax refund, please keep in mind you need to do it before you pass the border control.

This restaurant offers an extensive selection of flavorsome and savory meals that are sure to satisfy any palate. With its wide range of mouthwatering options, Xiaogazi caters to various dietary preferences and tastes. Their menu comprises a diverse assortment of authentic Chinese fare prepared with precision and attention to detail.
(Translated by Google) XiaoGazi (pronounced: XiaoGaZi) Restaurant: There are nine branches in Urumqi, which can be found on Baidu map; including the No. 15 Hongtu 2nd Lane store, Hebei Road store, New World store, Railway Bureau Taibai store, Jiaheyuan store, Mingyuan store, Nanhu store, Wanyancheng store, and Jiangyuan store. There are chain stores all over the country. It can be seen that Xiaogezi Xinjiang specialty restaurant is very popular in Urumqi. It is recommended to have at least two people or more, and the per person is about 50 yuan. The environment is also good, there are performance times, and it is very economical and affordable. The baked buns are not like traditional kiln-baked buns and lack the traditional charcoal flavor. However, the crispy skin and meat filling are mainly lean meat, which is quite delicious. The grilled lamb chops have crispy skin and tender meat that melts in your mouth. It is really unmatched by other urban lamb skewers. Other dishes also taste good, including Gazi Laonong Chicken, Chicken with Fried Potatoes, and Wide Noodles, which are quite delicious. Kavas and yogurt are the most distinctive drinks. Kavas has a sweet and sour taste, and yogurt is thick and delicious. Others are famous for their spinach gluten, sweet and sour pork tenderloin chicken, yogurt, and pepper and sesame chicken. Erdaoqiao Market, also known as the International Grand Bazaar, is a popular spot for visitors looking to experience a vibrant mix of shopping and dining. While it may not open early in the day, it comes alive in the afternoon and evening, offering a variety of dry goods, specialties, souvenirs, and locally produced craft items. The market's sanitized appearance may resemble a mall but nearby pedestrian malls offer more promising shops.
Remarkable place, worth spending a day

This is the location of the International Grand Bazaar as opposed to the one shown on Google maps. Anyway, this place does not open too early so it is ok to visit in the afternoon or evening for a meal. There is a dinner show too if you are so inclined. The shops do not have a bazaar feel as they looked very santized, looking like any mall. The pedestrian mall next to the bazaar looks more promising with the shops.

It’s quite difficult to get this place and take 1 hr with zigzag road up to the mountains. When arriving at tourist bus stop center, have to take a provided bus to the tourist service center and then take a 600 meter walk or get a buggy (charged) around 5 mins to arrive the tourist spot of the wonderful lake. There are so many tourists in spring and summer times which is difficult to take a photo without friends. Even many tourists, the management of transportation is very effective. There are many activities provided such as cruising in the lake, tracking, hiking, worshipping at the temples surrounding.

(Translated by Google) A park not far from downtown Urumqi. I visited this place without thinking about it, but I liked the refreshing early summer feel and the atmosphere where visitors can leisurely enjoy themselves even though it was a weekday afternoon. I took a car from the entrance towards the mountain, walked down, had a cup of tea at a tea house, and returned to the entrance along the waterway, which was nice.

Interesting myth of how two mountains used to be connected by a river which now runs underneath the highway. The 2 mountains have a pagoda each facing each other. There’s a statue on topt of the mountain that commemorate one of the huge heroes of China - Lin Zexu who dealt with 2 major crisis: opium war and the Taiping Kingdom uprising. Totally worth a visit but don’t expect much.
