Stock Ghyll Force

Mentioned on

Hiking area
Stock Ghyll Force is a picturesque 70-ft. waterfall located in a wooded area near Ambleside village in the Lake District. The falls, which drop in two stages to form a V shape where two streams meet, are easily accessible from the village and offer excellent photo opportunities along the well-signposted footpath. This natural wonder is part of the scenic attractions that can be explored while visiting Windermere, Hawkshead, and other nearby points of interest in the region.
Really lovely walk up to the waterfall through the trees. It's a relatively easy walk, although there is uneven ground with rocks and steps. There are some benches on the way up, although some are in better condition than others. We went early evening on a Saturday and we were pretty much the only ones there. It is well signposted to the falls. It is a free walk and waterfall, you don't need to pay or get tickets. Highly recommend coming here!
Ellie G — Google review
Lovely waterfalls. You can follow the steep climb along the river, part walk up the road or a short distance from the nearby car park (Force Cafe, need to be a customer for parking first). We did the cafe, which was about 10 minutes, but still not ideal for those with mobility issues
Tom ( — Google review
Took a walk to Stock Ghyll Force Waterfall and really enjoyed it! The trail is peaceful and surrounded by beautiful woodland, with the sound of water along the way. The waterfall at the end is stunning — definitely worth the short hike. A lovely spot to relax and enjoy nature in Ambleside!
RIFKI — Google review
A short walk from the centre of Ambleside, these delightful, popular waterfalls are well worth visiting. Well marked tracks lead up the side of the river to the falls and then cross over small bridges so that you get the best views. An easy walk for children with lots of spots to pause and take in the view.
Andy R — Google review
Stock Ghyll Force, Ambleside’s Hidden Waterfall. Located just a 15 minutes walk away from Ambleside town centre. Start your journey from the road opposite the Ambleside Inn, and follow the waymarked woodland path through Stock Ghyll Woods, where the sound of rushing water guides you to various scenic viewpoints along the river. 🌊🥾Follow the red arrows trail and cross a wooden footbridge, Just below the bridge, kids can paddle in the shallow stream. It’s a perfect spot for photos and refreshing treats.📸 🌿 Free, easy, and perfect for little explorers and nature lovers!
Maria S — Google review
Always great to see the waterfalls all year round. This visit was on the loop walk from Troutbeck over Wansfell then down into Ambleside via the falls. Great walk.
DAZ A — Google review
A lovely waterfall within easy walking distance of Ambleside. The path splits about a third of the way up - the left route is classed as the more ‘challenging’ walk. We went up the left and then down the right which is definitely a more accessible route
Tanya R — Google review
We walked from the local Force cafe - you can park here but do need to visit the cafe to enable you to park. The walk isnt far from the cafe taking about 5 minutes. It was very busy with queues to take photos at some view points. You can walk a loop of the falls, crossing the bridge at the top, falling the path down to the second bridge. We would advise caution in the wet weather as with any environment like this as a slip here landed our afternoon in a&e! The paths are well maintained

The Armitt Library & Museum Centre is a unique establishment that combines a museum, gallery, and library to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Lake District. Founded in 1912 as a hub for community engagement, it boasts an impressive collection including Beatrix Potter's family books and personal first editions, exquisite botanical watercolors, and significant artworks by Kurt Schwitters.
Great little museum, fascinating information about Beatrix Potter’s interest in fungi with beautiful drawings. Also enjoyed the current exhibition about ‘running in’t fells’. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and it was great that we could bring our dog in too! It’s also included in the art pass.
S R — Google review
Lovely little museum and library. We visited this museum to see the exhibition on Wainwright. It was about £7 to enter, and it includes free returns for a year, which is decent. There's a gift shop when you first enter the museum with lots of books in, and a few other bits. We had to park in the pay and display carpark across the road. There's toilets in the car park, plus a toilet in the museum. The exhibition on Wainwright is fantastic for anyone interested in walking/ Wainwright/ long distance walking. There's a tv with information/ short programs about Wainwright on a loop. There's lots of information, and the displays look lovely. There's also a few other exhibitions on a battle of Ambleside and Beatrix Potter at the moment. There were quite a few other people in there when we went, but it wasn't ridiculously busy. There was plenty of space to stand and move around in. It's well worth a visit. I'll be returning again one day.
Donna W — Google review
Lovely little museum, with nod to it's founders, some great exhibits regarding Amblesides Roman history. Some stunning fungi water colours by none other than Beatrix Potter. Also while we were there, an excellent display about Alfred Wainwright and his guide books. Worth a visit if local history is your thing !

Brilliant place and Expedition. What a great hidden gem . Got me out the rain to , win win

We visited in August 2024. A lovely museum, with nice exhibitions. Museums are always worthy of support, so please pop in. Friendly staff.

Lovely visit and really interesting displays. I'm trying not to be too judgmental but the lady behind the till was very slow, she was in her 80s and probably shouldn't have been operating it.
William S — Google review
Very interesting and informative Wainwright exhibition. A must see if you are in ambleside, plenty of exhibits. I was particularly moved by the television presentation of Andrew Nichol's journey to innominate tarn by Haystacks, the place where AW's ashes had been scattered.

The Bridge House

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on a bridge over Stock Beck River, The Bridge House is a charming 17th-century stone structure that has become one of Ambleside's most iconic landmarks. Constructed from local slate, this narrow dwelling has served various purposes throughout its history, including as an orchard storehouse, mill counting house, tearoom, and even a family home for up to eight people.
In an incredibly charming village sits the sweetest little house—tiny, cozy, and full of character. It’s set against a backdrop of breathtaking views, offering a true visual feast. For photo lovers like me, it’s an absolute dream, with every corner promising picture-perfect moments. This village, like the entire region, is a pure natural wonder—peaceful, scenic, and simply unforgettable.

Pretty little house over the river. Is right on the roadside so easy and free access ( & right next to the Apple Bakery if you fancy something tasty after your visit )
Tanya R — Google review
I fell in love with this town There are so many adventure, beautiful nature, lovely 🥰

Great place to eat under the shade - we bought a slice of pizza from the small shop nearby and sat along the bridge house. Nice place for a quick rest or stop.

Yep... it's indeed a house on a bridge. Great place to sit and eat your apple pie from the ambleside bakery.

National Trust - Stagshaw Gardens

Mentioned on
10 lists

Garden
Nestled just a short walk from Ambleside village, Stagshaw Gardens is a serene woodland escape offering tranquil walking paths through a diverse array of trees, shrubs, and flowers. Originally created in 1957 by Cubby Acland, this informal garden boasts an impressive collection of rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, and other unique plants.
We had a lovely walk around the gardens. It is an easy walk down the main road from Ambleside or if you are more adventurous then you can walk behind the mountain rescue base and go via Jenkins Crag. The garden itself is lovely in the Spring, but you can see how amazing it will be in Summer in full bloom. The different shrubs and trees are amazing. You do need to be able on your feet for the garden as it is built into the hillside and is full of narrow trails and steep inclines, but does have a few benches dotting around for those who want to take 5. In addition in Stagshaw woods is a Tall Tree 🌲 Trail, this was really interesting and the 2 kids with us were running up and down the hill looking at the plaques on each tree. Which told us the scientific name, common name and place of origin.
Sarah M — Google review
Probably amazing in April thru May when azaleas in bloom. Nice 45 minute walk up steep hill but not much to see in mid October. Parking for about 10 cars. Tricky exit back onto busy road on the way out.
Jeremy R — Google review
Azaleas and Rhododendron in full bloom and quite stunning, but the garden is definitely a forgotten gem. Nice walk up the steep path above the trees gives stunning views of the fells beyond Ambleside
Bill G — Google review
Car park is small. Not what I was expecting. Not really a garden more walk ways through grass and up slopes that can be slippy in places. Some wildlife squirrels, small birds manage to see a deer. There is benches to sit on but you would need to put something down or get dirty trousers/etc. Across the road is Jenkins field and you can go down to the water and take in the views all around.
John R — Google review
Nice walk 🚶‍♂️ very relaxing . There are not many parking spots.
Nigel B — Google review
Car park entrance is a 90 degree bend off the main road and a little uneven. Space for about 10 cars. Nice woodland walks the garden to one side and a woodland trail to the other. Early August not too many flowers in bloom.
Richard D — Google review
Limited parking but fantastic place to explore including some massive trees
James B — Google review
We walked from the piers at Ambleside took about 10/15 mins. We had difficulty crossing the road to the garden as traffic was very busy. It was a fairly steep walk up the single track road to the garden. The garden itself was a series of small rough paths, good walking shoes recommended, unfortunately several of these paths were blocked by fallen trees. I am sure it would be lovely when the rhododendrons were in flower but there were no flowers in August.

Embark on a scenic cruise with Windermere Lake Cruises Ltd, offering a unique perspective of England's largest lake, Windermere. Departing from Ambleside, Brockhole, Bowness or Lakeside Pier, the historic vessels provide indoor and outdoor seating to admire hidden coves and beaches only visible from the water. The area around Ambleside pier is particularly stunning for capturing memorable selfies.

I can't recommend this enough! Just such an amazing experience. The Range of the cruises on offer is incredible. The staff are so informative and helpful, the facilities are plentiful, every boat has a bar or coffee shop. Who wouldn't say no to a mini booze cruise? The journey on the boat is once in a lifetime experience. I would highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting the lake district.
The R — Google review
It’s a must-do activity. It offers a very pleasant cruise through the lake with stunning views. We took the Red Route return and it was great. The boats are on time, dog friendly, and the commentary tells the history of the place, although it would have been better if we could hear more stories.
A — Google review
My friends & I had such a pleasant day trip to the Lakes! Ambleside pier was our last stop and it was stunning! We went on a Monday so we managed to escape from the bustling crowds, very peaceful. Bought the 1 day hop on hop off bus ticket (£10 each but £25 for a group of 4), which was definitely worth it considering we managed to cover many villages and towns all within a day.
Era R — Google review
Lovely tour around the lake on the Green Cruise. The staff gave us an introduction of the lake and the tourist attractions. It was raining heavily in the morning so we had to stay indoors of the cruise. We visited the Wray Castle but couldn't go in there asit is being refurbished. only able to walk around the grounds. It was sunny in the afternoon so we sat on the top floor of the cruise, the staff is nice enough to wipe the seats dry for us and helped us take pictures!
Jodi T — Google review
Even if you don't take cruises it's a lovely place to spend some time, have an ice-cream or just sit and look at the lake.

Oh my, sailing in MV Teal was such a brilliant experience. Very welcoming staff, interesting commentary along the cruise, breathtaking views and absolutely delightful to be sailing on this elegant 89 years old vessel. Highly recommend this experience.

Had the most wonderful day yesterday thank you! My dog previously refused to get on a boat (the small wooden one) so I didn't try again - until yesterday! I saw your video a few days ago re puppy guide dog training and saw the boat with the flat gang plank and we decided this looked great. I live only 40 mins away so it's been a shame not being able to travel on the boats or leave the dog home. Rebecca from the Ambleside cafe started chatting to me while I was sat outside the ticket office with an ice cream. I explained I was trying to desensitise my anxious dog to the pier area. She said I definitely need to speak to the lovely Andy in the Ticket office! I went over and asked - he chatted about the different boats and recommended The Swift to Bowness For the boat and also the park, cafes, shops, incredible views We went on the boat and what a wonderful experience, the men who let you on and off were so very kind. We had 40 mins of heaven and so relaxing. Arrived in Bowness and it was everything Andy said it would be! We had the best time and came back in the boat a few hrs later. We will be going back again next weekend! Thanks so much

Ambleside Roman Fort

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Ambleside Roman Fort, located a couple of miles outside Ambleside, is an ancient site dating back to the 2nd century. Situated amidst serene farm fields, this historic fort once guarded the crossing of River Rothay on the Roman road from Manchester to Carlisle. The area also offers access to Grizedale Forest for cycling routes and treetop adventures, as well as numerous walking and climbing opportunities in the Lake District.
A fascinating historic site with beautiful views over Lake Windermere. The remains of the Roman fort are well preserved, and there are clear information boards that explain the history and layout of the site. It’s free to visit and easy to access with a short walk from Ambleside. Peaceful, quiet, and a lovely spot to imagine what life was like here nearly 2,000 years ago. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy history or just want a scenic place to explore.
M A — Google review
If you're into this sort of thing, it's pretty cool. There is not a great deal to see. It is a short walk from the carpark, in the middle of a cow field. It's free and a cool bit of history, great views of the lake worth a little visit if you are in the area.
Mark C — Google review
This is an easy visit if you are in Ambleside and it’s surprisingly in a field with people walking their dogs all over it . The descriptive boards really allow you to picture how it was all set up. Worth a visit.
Chris D — Google review
Archaeological remains, information boards, footpaths and rocky outcrop in a farmer's field. Simple but interesting piece of history and some beautiful cows as well.
Caitlin — Google review
On our way to Ambleside stopped here. The fort was hardly recognizable, but the scenery was beautiful.
Patrick X — Google review
For me, it was a fantastic look into the past. Only a ten minute walk, and as long as you don't mind some well-behaved cows, you get a look too!
Stephen R — Google review
Great little find! We had a great time looking round the ruins and imagining what they once were. There's helpful signs with interesting facts, but no parking. We parked just up the road at the rugby club, which happened to sell amazing coffee!
Steve J — Google review
Amazing old ruins, was aamzing to walk around and over them. Imagining the buildings and walking amongst them. The small information boards were also great for some little bits of knowledge

Borrans Park is a public green space located at the northernmost tip of Windermere, just west of Waterhead. The park offers magnificent views of the lake and merges with the greenery around a Roman fort. Visitors can relax on benches facing the water, watch steamers coming and going, and take in the natural splendor of the lakeshore. Accessible from A591, it features picnic tables, ample seating, and a large grassed recreation area.
Lovely park by the lakeside. Cherry blossom looks beautiful which was planted in the memory of Hiroshima. Just next to the park is "Roman fort" (remains).

Lovely park with a view onto, as well as into the lake. It's a shame about the fallen trees not being picked up sooner as the path was blocked and the trail was muddy from people needing to use the grass... I asked a nice little bird to wait for me to take a photograph, and it did! We enjoyed the walk in the nicer winter weather. It's worth a visit. The Roman Fort is right next to it as well! Go go go 🤗😄

Had a great time in the Lake District in Borrans Park when we had a heat wave in July. It was so picturesque, I was amazed by the stone houses as we where approaching this area via car. It felt like I was somewhere in Italy. I would 100% visit again. I would recommend doing a picnic. I had a chance to swim in the lake to the other side, which was so refreshing.

The most meaningful place to me on planet earth. Where I asked my wife to marry me, and where I spread her ashes with our little boy just 5 years later. An amazing spot at the north of Lake Windermere, but please treat it with respect.

Church
St. Mary's Parish Church is a stunning and historic church located in the Lake District. The church boasts beautiful stained glass windows, including the famous Children's Window by Henry Holiday, and captivating murals such as Gordon Ransom's depiction of Ambleside's Rushbearing ceremony. It also serves as the final resting place of Mary Armitt and features eight melodious church bells that can be heard throughout the area. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Early English style, St.
A huge church this, and according to the 'Self-Guided Heritage Trail' sheet was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott to hold up to 1000 people. Not an old church, completed in 1854, it has an impressive sandstone spire. There is the intriguing mural from 1944 - Rushbearing. Edited Feb 8th, 2024 I mistakenly thought the Wordsworth chapel was closed off but it isn't, and the stained glass there (and indeed throughout the church) is all very impressive. A church well worth calling in to see what is going on.
Roy S — Google review
Such a beautiful parish. The iconic historic building and grounds. A peaceful place to sit and reflect inside or outside.
Kris T — Google review
Last year when visiting Ambleside we called into St. Mary's Parish Church. There was a young man playing the organ, he was practicing different pieces of music so we sat listening quietly. He asked if he could play for us " yes, certainly!" we said - he then proceeded to play " The Phantom of the Opera".....WOW!! That memory will stay with us forever - what a fantastic piece of music - and just for "us ". Absolutely brilliant!! We hope the young fella goes far following his musical career. Oh..yes, the church was pretty amazing too.
Anthony B — Google review
A very interesting & beautiful church in a splendid location. Perfectly located for either a stroll into town or through Rothay park and along the river. The staff in the parish centre next door were very helpful and friendly and toilets and coffee were available.
Mike G — Google review
The church was open during a period of extremely hot weather and we came in for a sit down in the coolness and stillness of its interior. It was a welcome rest period

National Trust - Hill Top Beatrix Potter House

Historical landmark
Museums
Hill Top, the Beatrix Potter House, is a charming seventeenth-century farmhouse filled with the author's personal belongings exactly as she left them. Visitors can see her boots and hat by the fireside chair and hear the ticking of her kitchen clock. The cottage garden is a delightful mix of wild flowers, herbs, fruit, and vegetables. Located in Near Sawrey, this National Trust property was purchased by Beatrix with her book royalties and later entrusted to the National Trust for preservation.
Such an idyllic setting for a one off experience. Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, the views are just spectacular. It was so enjoyable visiting Beatrix Potter's home to see where her inspiration for the wonderful stories she wrote was found. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and with visiting times done on a rota, it ensured that there weren't too many people inside the house. It was lovely to be able to get up close to see all her possessions and we were even able to sit in the window seats to look through the window facing her vegetable patch. Highly recommended.
Samantha D — Google review
You can imagine Beatrice in all the rooms and outside sitting in her garden. Full of things she loved and the stories she wrote, the house is big (lowish ceilings) and interesting but lots of visitors make the rooms seem small. Dog friendly, a few benches in her garden to enjoy a picnic or a drink\bite from the mobile cafe, toilets down a step. 2hrs parking is ample for looking round, so arrive a few minutes before your booked time, check in and collect your token for the house. Book and gift shop plus a house had cake for £2 and another a few plants for sale.
Ilona R — Google review
Beatrix Potters beloved farmhouse. You need to book car working if visiting here via the National Trust website. It’s a nice way to spend and hour reminiscing on the books you had in childhood. Beatrix used the farmhouse and local area as inspiration for her famous children’s story books. You see story boards around the side demonstrating this. The house is interesting with lots of the original contents on display. These are refreshments, toilets and a shop on the site.
David R — Google review
My visit to Hill Top was a cherished return after 25 years, and it was just as magical as I remembered. It was a joy to walk through Beatrix Potter's gardens and home, which truly sparked my imagination. I was especially excited to find a Peter Rabbit book for my grandson, a perfect memento of the visit. The grounds are pet-friendly, which was great for our group. However, dogs are not allowed inside the house itself, so we took turns visiting to make sure everyone got a chance to see it. The views and the small village are incredibly quaint and charming. I highly recommend stopping at the pub located between the car park and the property entrance—it’s a great spot. A major tip for visitors is to book your tickets online in advance. We purchased our tickets the day before and got the last two available spots for the entire day. I would have been so disappointed to have traveled all the way to the Lake District and not gotten in! We booked the last time slot at 2:30 PM, and it seemed to have the fewest crowds, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Mitch H — Google review
The main attraction here is to be in the same spaces that Beatrix Potter occupied and see how those spaces inspired the writing of some of her books. Having copies of those books open and available at points through the house was a nice touch which added an extra level of understanding to the place. The mice hidden throughout the house to find also added to the visitor engagement in a way that seemed to fit well with the general feel of the place. If you are not a Beatrix Potter fan (but you're other half is perhaps?) then do not fear. There is plenty of interest here for the tag along visitor too. The house holds its own as a purely historical attraction, and the garden areas surrounding the house are also noteworthy. The gift shop just before the exit is well stocked and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Some exclusive items here that can only be bought at the shop itself. They are not cheap but I would imagine a dedicated fan will not be deterred by the larger numbers involved.
Mark D — Google review
Lovely place, well looked after by the national trust with almost all the original furnishings. So interesting to see more about Beatrix's life. Got the ferry across from Bowness and walked up, a bit of road walking at times but a beautiful walk.
Eirlys E — Google review
The house is beautifully set for visitors to see how Beatrix Potter lived and worked. The garden is just as I imagined. Beatrix Potter did so many good things for children with her books and pictures. Her work with people in the Lake District helped to keep it looking wonderful for generations to enjoy. I am so glad the NT takes so much care of Hill Top. Thanks to Joey’s for the yummy coffee.
Christine H — Google review
Its a quiet, small and beautiful garden to visit if you are in the area & a NT member. However it’s missing the usual NT tea room, facilities & information to make worthwhile a re-visit as we only spent 1.5hr there… which included a long sit in the garden.

Wray Castle, a Victorian neo-gothic building located in Cumbria, England, is a sight to behold with its turrets and battlements. Originally built in the 1800s for a retired doctor, it has been under the ownership of the National Trust since 1929. The interior may be largely empty, but the lakeside grounds are stunning and were once enjoyed by Beatrix Potter's family as a holiday home.
Spent a beautiful day at Wray Castle with the National Trust – such a peaceful and scenic spot. The grounds and castle are really well maintained, with stunning views over Lake Windermere. Perfect for a stroll, a bit of history, and soaking up nature. Highly recommend if you’re in the Lake District! 🌳 Beautifully kept grounds 🧱 Well-preserved castle 🌞 Peaceful setting with amazing views

Beautiful setting and dramatic building. The castle was closed today for renovation but still nice grounds to walk through and activities for the kids to do. Had food and drinks in Joeys cafe. Good food with a nice indoor seating area. The outdoor seating area feels a little like a corridor and a bit squashed. Good sand friendly service in the cafe.

A stunning castle in a breathtaking lakeside setting. The grounds are beautiful for walking, with lovely views over Lake Windermere and plenty of space to explore. The castle itself is very impressive from the outside, and the interior has an interesting history connected to the National Trust and Beatrix Potter. Great spot for families, picnics, and photos. The café is a nice bonus, and the staff are always welcoming. A wonderful place to visit for both history lovers and those who simply want a scenic day out.

The castle was under renovation so we couldn’t go but there is a nice lake side sitting area at a short walk. There are walking trails as well. There is a cafe and toilet facilities. There is parking which is free if you’re a National trust member. Nice views from the castle entry area.

Great view over Windermere- easy navigation around the paths. With a nice spot for a cuppa……! Just a shame it’s Closed so couldn’t see inside!

Great place to visit with walks around the castle. Some parking. Cafe and toilets. You can get there by ferry from Ambleside. It doesn't cost anything to visit. There is a charge for car parking. Nice place for walks .

Off to Wray Castle from Ambleside on the launch amazing views as you cross Windermere. Wray Castle grounds are an absolute delight with so many walks along the lakeside, with some amazing views over to The Langdale Pikes, if you are ever in the Lake District it is a must to visit. April 2025

Well I am sure the castle is fine. Bit it was closed fir renovations. And will be for a long time. But the beach was fine. Lovely swim in the lake.

The Old Stamp House Restaurant

Modern British restaurant
Fine dining restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is a charming British eatery that prides itself on using locally sourced rare breed meats and foraged goods. The restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a unique touch of personalization as guests are greeted with a letter from the chef explaining the inspiration behind each dish. Run by Cumbrian brothers, Ryan and Craig Blackburn, the restaurant's menu is heavily influenced by Cumbria's heritage, people, and landscape.
10/10, cozy atmosphere, absolutely amazing courses (including the vegetarian tasting menu too), only gripe would be that the pace at the start was good with food trickling out but by the 4th course it got quite slow and we were there got nearly 3hrs which meant my back started to hurt, didn't take away from the lovely evening though. My bf had the wine tasting menu which was a nice touch but the waiter bringing the wine out was very quiet and seemed almost nervous explaining each wine and we didn't really learn anything from it.
Issy B — Google review
Food, wine pairing, staff friendliness and ambiance of the venue is first class. The chef bringing out the main dish and having a chat with every guest was a nice touch. The restaurant is decorated in dark colours and striking art work. Every single dish was an explosion of flavours that worked perfectly. The only disappointment was my boyfriend made a note on our reservation that it was my 40th birthday (actually the day itself) and offered to pay more money to do some sort of treat over dinner to acknowledge this and nothing was done. And the table next to us got a “happy birthday” from their waitress with a dessert that said “happy birthday” and from a sounds of it another complimentary dessert dish so that was sad for us both to witness when he hoped for something similar especially being such a milestone birthday.

Without doubt the best meal I have ever had! I could not fault a single thing. Each course was delicious. The staff were great. Terrific wine list. Wonderful atmosphere. Yes- this is a rave review!

This was our favourite meal during our stay in Ambleside. Everything was so well done here from start to finish. The explanation, the appearance, presentation, and taste were exemplary. We loved it all and will definitely be recommending to our friends. Well done to all the chefs and staff here who obviously work so hard to produce such a wonderful experience for their customers.
Dave P — Google review
Had zero expectations when booking the Old Stamp House for dinner. To say I was pleasently surprised would be an understatement. A truly special experience start to finish. Impeccable service from when you walk in the door, the level of attention to detail and presentation with each dish is impressive. 11 courses on the atumn menu which are all timed well, use the best of the best produce and every element is carefully thought out and elevated. The best meal I've ever had by far. A must visit for a stay in the Lake District.
Brianna B — Google review
An amazing restaurant. Well worth booking ahead of time. Staff were friendly, and professional. Ambience was very comfortable. We went for lunch. All the courses were excellent. The chef served eveyone and had a pleasant conversation with all the clientele. There was even a letter written by Ryan to the guest, set on each table. A unique experience and would highly recommend.
The S — Google review
From start to finish excellent! Thank you team The Old Stamp House for a wonderful evening. We much appreciated the unique and personal touch on behalf of the owner Ryan that has added so much value to the dinner. What is this? Well, visit and see!
Ramona R — Google review
Great service and excellent value. We loved the opening dishes but felt the latter part of the menu was very heavy and a bit overwhelming in terms of the flavours and depths of the dishes which drops it from being a five star for us. Still, an obviously deserved award winning restaurant with plenty of character, honesty, flair and talent leading the kitchen delivering a down to earth experience. We thoroughly appreciated the accompanying notes for each dish. We would return and try again.

Nestled in the heart of Ambleside, Lake Road Kitchen is an intimate dinner-only restaurant that offers creative locavore tasting menus with optional wine pairings. The modest yet chic space sets the stage for a culinary journey led by chef James Cross, who draws from his experience at Noma in Copenhagen to create radical cuisine.
Did the 5 course meal to dip our toes into our first Michelin locally, definitely plan to do the 12 course. The flavors and dishes were well thought out and beautifully layered. The salmon dish and peas were PHENOMENAL. We even took home some fermented butter, which was insane! Definitely will make our way back and well worth the experience.
Patricia D — Google review
This food is unforgettable. This is the first Michelin-starred restaurant my wife and I have been to. My wife is vegan and I ordered the vegetarian menu. They were so accommodating and recreated most of the dishes based on our restrictions, but the food tasted like it was meant to be that way to start. The staff was also great, they were super friendly. Overall I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. The only negative was that it ruined the rest of the food during my stay.
Amanda R — Google review
We had the 8 course tasting menu in the wonderful Lake Road Kitchen. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. The food was exceptional. This is what a tasting menu is all about. Not everything scored top marks for us but we still recognised the skill and invention that had gone into the dish. The salmon was our favourite and the cheesecake was exquisite. A truly wonderful experience and we would thoroughly recommend.
Dave P — Google review
It was a perfect place to wrap up my holiday. My friend recommended me the LRK and it was worth it! My favourites were iberico with egg yolk, octopus and wagyu and all the rest! Basically I haven’t left anything. I’m not a sweet tooth but both desserts were just right for me. Some sauce was a bit salty for me, but it’ll be okay for most people. Service was great and wine pairing was great too! Thank you!
M S — Google review
Great Michelin restaurant, perfect for a date. The intimate setting with few tables makes it feel private and special. The food was delicious, though we expected a bit more “wow” from the menu. Service was superb.
Kwang S — Google review
We chose the 12 course meal with an added course and dessert, and it was worth every penny! Every plate was beautifully plated, and phenomenal. The head chef, James came out to explain several of the dishes in detail, from what makes the ingredient unique, to how it was sourced and prepared. The explanations of every dish made this a fascinating experience that set it apart from other Michelin restaurants since it’s never the chef, and the plates are not always explained in detail. The other servers/chef were all kind and friendly as well. We also loved how certain ingredients were paired with preparations that you would never think of, such as pea miso or barley koji. Being Japanese, I loved how old Japanese methods were used on untypical ingredients. Lastly, James and Darren (sommelier) chose a few wines for us, and they went perfectly with our meal. The wine pairing would be a good choice at this restaurant. The dishes are spaced with enough time that you wouldn’t have to rush drinking every glass, and their wines are incredible. If you are visiting Ambleside, this restaurant is a must! It was the highlight of our time in the UK, and will definitely be back if we’re ever in Ambleside again.
Keiko M — Google review
I was surprised with the 8 course tasting menu for my 25th birthday! James, chef patron, was a legend. You can tell he cares so much about his food. The bread was the BEST bread I've ever had. The butter that came with it was dry aged and it tasted meaty with the bread. My favourite dish, although it's hard to choose, was the salmon. I savoured every bite. I crave for pistachio gelato every time I visit a hot country in Europe. To have this at home in the Lakes, and not only this, but the best quality pistachios paired with British cherry jam. Incredible. Also, shout-out to Darren who was an exceptional server. Hats off, the experience really felt once-in-a-lifetime as I'll remember this meal for the rest of my life. They also made me feel very special on my birthday, which I didn't expect at all. Worth every single ££ spent and it was a privilege to be able to go there.

Lake Road Kitchen in Ambleside is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the warm, inviting atmosphere and the attentive staff made us feel right at home. The menu is a delightful foodie journey, each dish expertly crafted and beautifully presented. There was no standout dish for me as they were all outstandingly good. The wine pairing was impeccable, enhancing the flavours of each course. The attention to detail and the passion for culinary excellence are evident in every bite. It's clear that the team at Lake Road Kitchen takes great pride in what they do. This was more than just a meal; it was an unforgettable dining experience. Highly recommend!

Doi Intanon, Thai Restaurant

Thai restaurant
Doi Intanon is a stylish Thai restaurant located in the old Market Hall, offering classic Thai cuisine with a variety of vegetarian options. The family-run establishment has been serving authentic Thai flavors in Ambleside for over 20 years. Their menu features popular dishes such as pad Thai, green and red curries, fish cakes, tom yum soup, and salads, along with daily specials.
Really great food, wonderful service and beautiful building (an old market house). We had the tempura prawns and chicken satay to start - both delicious. Our mains were made to order (we wanted beef instead of chicken or prawns which was the option for one of the stir frys) and they were happy to accommodate. Lovely staff, felt very welcomed - we enjoyed our first meal out in Ambleside.

A surprise find in the Lake District. Authentic Thai food with good selection of varieties. The staffs are super friendly and the building is beautiful with high ceilings. Had a great meal and a good time here. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful dinner during our stay in Grasmere. We’re big fans of Thai food, and this restaurant is definitely one of the best we’ve been to. Our table was on the second floor, and I highly recommend requesting a table there. The atmosphere was fantastic—high ceilings and traditional Thai decorations. The food was delicious and varied. We started with the combination starter and the Yum Toui vegetarian salad, both of which were great. The main dishes were equally impressive, with both curry and stir-fried options to choose from. And the desserts were simply divine. The service was impeccable—quick, polite, and attentive. The prices seemed reasonable, considering the quality of the food and service. We felt we got our money’s worth.

Lovely Thai restaurant in the heart of Ambleside. The food was superb and the service was very good. It's quite expensive but was worth it. I recommend booking a table as it was very busy when we went on a Friday at the end of September.

Doi Intanon in Ambleside stands out as one of the Lakes’ top spots for authentic Thai cuisine—a favourite both with regular visitors and lucky newcomers. The menu is bursting with classics: fragrant curries, aromatic stir-fries, and sizzling dishes delivered straight from the open kitchen. Each dish is crafted with great attention to detail, using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations. Portions are generous, and the variety accommodates all tastes, from adventurous spice lovers to vegans seeking creative, plant-based dishes. The atmosphere is bright, welcoming, and transports you to Thailand with its authentic décor and bustling energy. Service is consistently warm, knowledgeable, and friendly, with staff happy to recommend house specialities or cater to allergies and dietary needs. The combination starter and house-made Thai sweet chilli sauce are standouts, while the Weeping Tiger and Thai salads frequently win praise for bold flavour. For a special treat, save room for dessert—diners rave about the tempting sweets! The restaurant is popular, so advanced bookings are recommended. Whether you dine in or opt for takeaway, Doi Intanon delivers soul-soothing food and memorable hospitality. It’s a must-visit destination in Ambleside for anyone craving real Thai flavours at fair prices, served up with heart and care.

I would definitely recommend booking in advance it gets really busy. Staff were friendly and helpful. Drinks were a bit pricey. And I definitely didn't like the 10% service charge.
Frank H — Google review
Update for 2025: Excellent food on our return visit. Curries were tasty with good depth of flavour. An improvement to food and service compared to 3 years ago and well worth a visit. ----- Starters were the best, sweetcorn fritters tasty and spring rolls were good. Red curry was tasty but had to hunt for the chicken. Service was prompt but haphazard with the wrong wine delivered and prawn crackers forgotten. Good flavours but could do better.

Bistro
Kysty is a relaxed dining spot that offers multi-course meals with wine pairings for both lunch and dinner. The name, meaning "fussy" in Cumbrian dialect, reflects the insistence on local ingredients rather than the restaurant's mood. It is the more casual counterpart to the Michelin-starred Old Stamp House. Despite still offering set menus, macaron-style amuse bouches, and wine pairings, Kysty provides a shorter and more straightforward dining experience.
The day we had our lunch reservation, it rained heavily in the Lake District. Considering the cancellation fee, we struggled through the rain from Bowness to Amberside, but unexpectedly, it turned out to be a delightful meal. It was even one of the top 3 dining experiences of our whole UK trip. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the Lake District. The restaurant's service was very friendly and professional. Based on recommendations, we ordered various appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Each dish was very satisfying. The Pigeon Breast was cooked like steak, juicy and sweet. The fish, Mackerel, was not fishy at all but with a good flavor. The dessert was a mousse with gingerbread, which I found to be very distinctive and delicious.

We received vouchers to dine here for our engagement and it was a lovely little treat. It is an A La Carte style menu with matching wine suggestions and there are plenty of options for everyone. All of the courses were beautifully cooked and presented and the staff were lovely! The only thing that didn’t wow me was the dessert and I love a good pud but overall the experience was 5*

A wonderful evening with top class food and excellent service. The staff were so helpful with food and wine choices for both one vegetarian and one meat eater. We would definitely recommend booking well in advance to anyone visiting Ambleside. Can’t wait to try the sister restaurant ‘The Stamp House’. Children on the next table, happy and content. Good atmosphere and chatty between tables. Good friendly ambience. Would recommend to all family and friends. Well deserving of our five stars.

Everything was 5 stars. It was our wedding anniversary so decided a treat was required. This exceeded our expectations. We chose to go with the wine pairing for each course and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I would definitely eat at Kysty again. We had a great night and we so well looked after by the staff. The food was truly incredible.

Hidden in a small alleyway away from the busy streets of Ambleside we discovered an hidden gem for culinary delight ;-) Bistro has a charming atmosphere and amazing staff providing a top notch service to guests. This was accompanied with amazing dishes that we enjoyed fully by us and our kids. Pre dinner snacks and bread were well presented and super yummy !! Venison and Fish mains were super yummy see photos. Accompanied by a good wine and local gin selection. Great evening out with delicate and well prepared food. Definitely will be visiting again in our next trip in Lake District Well done chef and team.

Amazing place. Chef went out of his way to prepare vegan and gluten free options for me which were incredible, he also came out to have a chat and ask me how the food was, which I really appreciate. All the staff here were friendly and welcoming and the whole restaurant has a beautiful vibe. Some of the best food we had in the lakes.
Sam B — Google review
I think this is the best restaurant I have ever been to. We arrived a little later than booked due to an accident on the road, but the staff were so polite and happy to still accommodate us when we were expecting to be turned away. We ordered starters, mains and desserts as we wanted to try a little but of everything. We received some complimentary nibbles before our starters arrived, which was such a lovely surprise and each thing that was served to us was a delicious mouthful of flavour heaven. We were also served a little bit of bread (I think they said that it was made with beer) which was very dense, but delicious and very filling. I really want the recipe to this bread so I can make it at home! Every time a dish came out, the waiter would kindly explain each element to us. The food is beautifully presented and each element of the dish really compliments the other. Even though the portions may be classed as small by some, they are incredibly filling and you definitely leave the restaurant feeling full and satisfied. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area and if I am ever back, will definitely visit again. For the quality of food you receive, this place is very reasonably priced as well.

Zeffirellis is a renowned independent cinema in Ambleside, named after the famous Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli. It has been a prominent landmark for over 40 years and offers a unique combination of cinema, music venue, restaurant, and cafe. Time Out magazine ranked it as one of the 50 best cinemas in the UK and Ireland. The complex also includes Fellinis, an award-winning vegetarian Italian and Mediterranean restaurant with a daytime cafe and jazz bar.
We visited mid day for a drink and bite to eat. We were looking for a vegan (lactose intolerant) desert for a birthday treat, which we'd struggled to find anything other than a sad flapjack elsewhere!! We were greeted by a very enthusiastic member of staff who recommended the sticky toffee pudding, which was a surprise. What a treat! A proper pudding, that still had all the flavour without the dairy. It even came with a choice of vegan ice-cream or soya pouring cream. The pudding was delicious, with a poached pear and mixed berries with it, and a sticky toffee sauce. And the ice-cream was creamy and full of flavour. The birthday boy was very happy! The restaurant itself is lovely, with a fantastic vegetarian and vegan menu, and attentive staff.

Great restaurant. Absolutely loved the food here, and the overall experience was great. Enjoyed it so much the first time that we went back again later that week. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodated the dietry requirements of the group, pointing out the dishes that were suitable and offering to adjust dishes where possible. I would recommend their pasta dishes! The next time we're in the area, i'll be returning to try one of their pizzas!

Ate lunch at Zeffirellis after reading good reviews in a local hotel. The food was fantastic and Lucy was a great host explaining Gluten free options. Everything was incredibly efficient, staff were super helpful and the food was amazing. Beetroot Buddha bowl went down well. Will definitely come back. Thanks for a lovely meal.

Food was ok, but in my opinion, overpriced. No one came to our table to see if everything was OK, so we had to attract the attention of a waitress while going to another table, because they forgot our side order so it didn't come till the end of the meal, (taking a while so seemed to have forgotten to make it) , which was annoying and they apologised but didn't seem bothered that it came too late. Would have been a good gesture to not charge for that bit. I won't go again. didn't seem very bothered.

Lucy's on a Plate is an iconic establishment in Ambleside, offering a unique dining experience. The restaurant features a charming conservatory and an inviting open fire, creating a cozy atmosphere. It also houses a cookery school that hosts family days, adding to its appeal. Known for its longevity in the area, Lucy's has been serving up delightful dishes since 1989.
Wow what a place. We stumbled across this place it looks tiny from the outside but actually quite spacious loads of tables.. Food was off the scale... Recommend the potted salmon.... To die for. Lamb Shank was delicious and to finish off with the raspberry crumble 💓

Great night at lucy's on a plate. The menus are printed daily with a lovely daily notice on the front which i thought was a lovely touch. The food was delicious, great portion sizes and there were lots of gluten free options for my boyfriend. The steak was cooked great and was served with a heaping of garlic butter and peppercorn sauce (the garlic butter is insane) My only downside of the food was the chicken was slightly overcooked but the flavours of the dish and other components were great so balanced it out Staff were on the whole good, welcoming. Knocked a star off because the relaxed environment meant that staff often were talking a lot to the guests and it took a while to get our orders in.

We've ended up in Lucy's by absolute accident - didn't book anything and we liked the menu. Right away after entering the restaurant we've been greeted by extremely friendly, smiling staff and regardless lack of booking on Thursday's night we got a table. Interior has stunning feel to it, on every step you can see that this place has a heart of its own. We ordered lamb and fish mains - we loved them, probably the best of a kind that we ever had. After mains we couldn't stop ourselves from trying out desserts - we ended up ordering apple crumble tarte and sticky toffee pudding. Both were brilliant and served a role of a beautiful ending to a beautiful evening. I recommend this place to absolutely anyone who wants to make an additional memory from their trip to the Lakes. Thank you for this experience 💖

Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Just had one of the worst dining experiences of my life, for a 30th birthday celebration courtesy of Lucy’s on a plate Ambleside! I honestly don’t know where to begin with this, maybe the appalling manager, slow service, bland overpriced food, not sure really but here we go. So we email this place the previous evening to our booking enquiring about a reservation for 2 people, we heard nothing until WE contacted them around 3/4pm the following day to be told “oh yes im just on with the bookings now and was just about to call you”which I didn’t believe but that’s fine, on the phone I explained it was a special 30th birthday meal for my partner as they asked were we celebrating an occasion. We were looking forward to our meal and arrived slightly early about 6.20 for a 7pm table, we thought we could maybe have a drink if they had a bar or somewhere to wait for the table. We were shocked to see the manager fumbling around with his booking sheet to clearly see he didn’t have our names down, just to write us in in front of him, he then makes a joke saying “that would of been embarrassing”yeah it certainly would have been embarrassing so not a great start at all, we sit down to read the menu and notice some essay on the front talking about the guests and what they were celebrating, no mention of my partners 30th birthday just a half arsed after thought saying hello Andrew and Rhianne, as we were clearly forgotten about. After looking at the menu we decided to go for 2 pork belly starters £12 each and lamb shank £28 and lamb tagine £24, starters came out pretty quickly around 10-15 mins so great, unfortunately BLAND!! The apple puree could of been anything as there was no flavour at all, no sweetness to balance the dish just the flavour or pork and a little black pudding Bon Bon, BLAND! Then we wait for almost 1 hour, yes 1 hour for the main, asking the waiting staff how long, got told if it’s not here in 5 mins I’ll go and punch the chef, yes haha very funny but just get me my food I wasn’t up for jokes by this time, then the mains come, my lamb shank was dry had next to no sauce or should I say gravy at all, the mash was lukewarm the veg the same and very undercooked, I’m all for al dente but this just wasn’t and a piece of parsnip no bigger then your little finger, this place is a long way off fine dining! I asked for some more sauce and was brought a gravy boat of wishy washy gravy that they must use on every dish! Honestly very similar to a bisto gravy, where’s the lamb flavour or the reduced stock to coat the lamb shank, absolutely nothing! My partner said the lamb tagine was lukewarm again but after waiting an hour we were so hungry we just ate it, she said the cous cous was just bland and had nothing special about it, she said the cous cous from Sainsbury’s ‘food on the go’ was much nicer, why is this when we’re paying all this money? We also noticed there was no check back to see how we were enjoying the food as tbh they just weren’t bothered! When our plates were cleared(25 mins after we had finished) we were asked was everything ok, I said hmm yeah ok to which the waitress replied “ok yeah” great and takes the plates. This is where I would of informed the manager that someone was not very happy and suggest they go and speak to them! I was very reluctant to say anything because I’m aware I’m celebrating my partners 30th and didn’t want to make a scene, after such terrible service and food we just couldn’t order a dessert as we weren’t going to give these people my more of our money, we receive the bill at £115 for 2 starters 2 mains and 2 drinks each one of those was non alcoholic. Very overpriced for the quality you receive. Then to top the night off I go to pay, this is where the manger really shows his lack of experience, from me counting out the money to pay he never once asked “how was your meal” how did your partner enjoy her 30th birthday celebration” nothing! Didn’t even say enjoy your evening, honestly I recommend you research this place before going here as it’s beyond bad!

Outstanding dining experience from start to finish, and I highly recommend visiting Lucy’s. I booked a few months in advance as I wanted to ensure we had a reservation (we were there celebrating my son’s 30th birthday) and I received a confirmation email more or less immediately. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and showed to our table. I loved that there were several vegetarian options: not just pasta or burger dishes that vegetarians are usually offered. In fact I loved all of the effort that had gone into making the menu, not just the food - but the names of the dishes too! I also really loved (and appreciated) the little personal touches - like being mentioned in the menu. We really enjoyed our various meals, all the staff were lovely, and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Lucy’s. Highly recommended.

Had an absolutely lovely time here. We got seated straight away by Lucy at 8pm, after making a reservation a few days earlier. We ordered a 3 course meal, fish cake with salad and tartar sauce was delicious. Our mains were both yummy, I had vegetable Tagine (which I would enhance with some melted cheese) and my husband had classic Fish and Chips, you can’t go wrong with. For dessert, we chose the crème brûlée and the lime and ginger cheesecake, which were honestly divinee. Good job Kirsty! Service and attention to detail were on point especially as we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. Lucy congratulated him as we came in and they prepped a little balloon on our table 🥹 They also have a personalised menu introducing all the customers for that day! which I thought was very cute and innovative. All in all, very positive experience would highly recommend!

Came for the early evening menu. £26 for 2 courses and you got given good size portions. We had the fish cake, lamb tagine and beef shin which was all really good
Anisha — Google review
We visited Lucy's on a plate on a Sunday for the roast (which was very good) table booked for 5:15pm, we checked the online menu before visiting and saw there was a deal for 3 courses, when we arrived we were given a menu with no starters on, which was fine for us as we just wanted mains and dessert anyway, but for those who would want starters it looks like you would have to ask for this. The staff were by no means rude and were pleasant enough but they weren't exactly friendly or generally welcoming. There was no atmosphere to start with but as more customers entered and chatter filled the room it didn't feel as awkward, could have done with some background music whilst the restaurant filled up. Regardless of this you go to the restaurant for the food which was amazing and well worth the visit! Portion sizes will not leave you feeling hungry, and the quality of the food was great. Food generally came out in good time also, the restaurant was full by the time we left which is always a good sign. Over all we had a good experience but coming from a hospitality background the staff could just be a bit more enthusiastic to be there and create a better atmosphere, perhaps we caught them on a bad day though. Wishing Lucy and the team all the best.

This warm and inviting venue offers a relaxed atmosphere and serves up delicious British comfort food and pub grub, all made with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant boasts original features that contribute to its traditional charm, while also providing an outdoor terrace for al fresco dining on sunny days.
Came for Sunday roast dinner. It was very delicious!! They have local beers too that we enjoyed trying and were very tasty. The atmosphere is nice being in a historic building. The service is good. I am happy that I made a reservation, as I heard them turning people away. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant!

A restaurant name that immediately grabs attention—and the experience lived up to it! The starters and main course were absolutely delightful, leaving a lasting impression. While the dessert didn’t quite match the high expectations set by the earlier courses, the impeccable service made up for it. Our server, who worked Wednesday evening, was attentive and thoughtful, offering recommendations that truly enhanced our meal. A great dining experience overall!

In the heart of Ambleside, a historical building, with an interesting oak wall and beautiful features. We had the gin of the month which was good. The prawns and chorizo were flavoursome (highly recommended!) as was the burger. The lamb steak, on the other hand, was tough. The service was worthy of a 5 star. And a very interesting story behind the name of the restaurant: The priest hole.

I popped in solo on a dog walk whilst staying in Rydal Lovely staff and had a hot beef sandwich which was really lovely (proper thick gravy in a side dish and a good fresh salad and slaw alongside) as was a local bottled pale ale (always a risk for me to try and unknown pale! I didn't tell the staff I own a brewery ha) Really, astounding value also. Would have tipped but didn't have any cash on me. I will try and pop back! Marks down for atmosphere is simply as I wasn't allowed inside with the dog. Clearly signed and I made my choice to eat here based on the hospitality received regardless. Still, would be lovely (if not a good hygiene issue with doors to kitchen etc, I do appreciate some layouts make this impossible) if a small amount of bar space inside could be dog friendly. But forget that. Great food great service. Really enjoyed my lunch here 🍺

Stumbled across this place out of chance with my family and we absolutely loved it and will return each time we’re in Ambleside for sure. The speed of service wasn’t super quick, but you can really see and feel every item is made totally fresh and with great skill and attention. The food really was fabulous, both mains and desserts - truly excellent. Would be nice to have a draught beer available but some nice bottled choices at least that weren’t overly priced. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re in town!

We had a great time here. The burgers were super tasty and the atmosphere was really nice. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome.

Had such a lovely dinner here, the food was amazing and the staff were so friendly. Also the history of the place was fascinating!
Fleur E — Google review
I think the high ratings noted come from the choice of beverages available and the homely feel inside. This is because the food on offer itself is distinctly average. The much vaunted steak & ale pie seemed to have been sitting around for a while. Thankfully, the mushroom risotto was a hit. Also, the beer was bottled but came flat? Would be nice on a winters night but wouldn't return to eat.

Matthew Colley's bistro is a great place to get good food in beautiful surroundings. It serves classic British dishes that are perfect for hikers or tourists in the area. The service is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable.
Wonderful, fresh, rich, delicious and reasonable pricing. The staff were extremely courteous, friendly and accommodating. They had no problem in moving our booking to the next day. Thank you for a wonderful evening

Food was so good here! Server could have been a bit nicer, didn't say sorry when turning people away, so make sure to phone up to book! Loved the lasagne. Also pictured are wild boar special and creamy chicken dish

Had a delicious evening meal here. Both waitresses were attentive and friendly. The food was very good. Would recommend the mussels which came in a very balanced sauce and some bread to dip. We enjoyed all of the food, but be warned, the portions are generous to visit hungry.

Dined at Matthews on Tuesday night when staying over in Ambleside. Luckily got a table as it was quite busy with bookings. The food was 5 🌟 Both of us had starters from the specials board, lobster ravioli and the piri piri prawns, then both had a pasta dish for mains. Outstanding. And the pasta portions are huge! Unfortunately they left us no room for dessert which also looked amazing. Would definitely visit again when back on the area. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

I was lucky to manage and book a table on the same day. Walk ins were not entertained during peak dinner hours as mostly everyone has reservations. Ordered proper beef steak and lamb shoulder and separate mushroom stroganoff for my daughter. She loved the combination of stroganoff and rice together. My family throughly enjoyed our food here. Kudos to the waitress who had to entertain our requests multiple times asking for spoons, small plates or plastic cup for my little one. Thank you for accommodating us! We will recommend others to this for sure!

With its exceptional vegetarian fine dining offerings and extensive wine list, Fellinis provides a superb culinary experience for vegetarians and food enthusiasts alike.
Our friends are vegetarian so we always try to get them somewhere with a good choice. No problem here - everything! Gorgeous cheese soufflé then veg filled pancakes were an excellent choice. Friends had asparagus starter and cauliflower steak. Very tasty and good sized portions. Only issue was not much choice of non alcoholic drinks. No problem for me and hubby tho 🤪

Absolutely delicious food. Lovely place to eat in. Relaxing music playing in the background. Great service and very friendly people who served us. Highly recommend, even if your not vegetarian! We will definitely go back next time we are in the area.

We had a lovely meal here, we went for my husband’s birthday, and we left really happy! Attentive staff, the food was wonderful, well balanced and tasty. Would definitely recommend!

We had booked two evening meals at Fellinis Restaurant as part of a stay with Ambleside Manor Vegetarian Guest house. The food is excellent and the menu has been created to ensure the meals are tasty, wholesome and high in nutrition whilst being presented in a very appealing and appetising way. The staff are excellent providing a high level of service. Wine choices are good and easy to find a vegan wine if needed. We will most certainly be returning and look forward to our next meal there.

Fellinis was a delightful surprise on our first lake district holiday! Honestly some of the best vegetarian food I've had, and my non-vegetarian partner was also very impressed. Everything we ordered was interesting, tasty, and beautifully presented. I had the butternut squash and feta stuffed pancakes for my main, and the chocolate avocado mousse for dessert, which was especially delicious!

Beautiful vegan food, really friendly and helpful staff, and a great atmosphere. It was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.

Two nights eating here. Can honestly say it's compares to the very best of anywhere we have eaten. Food is second to none, the service was incredible. Cheese souffle the second night as a Starter followed by an amazing main of Moussaka

Nestled in the picturesque Lake District, The Samling Hotel offers elegant accommodations with stunning lake views and a renowned restaurant. The dining experience is a highlight, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that provide breathtaking vistas of Lake Windermere. The menu showcases dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients, including delectable options like monkfish and Yorkshire rhubarb.
We only went for dinner, we didn't stay so I can't review bedrooms. However if they're like downstairs I imagine they are refined, classical, well kept and beautiful. We went for dinner to celebrate our second wedding anniversary. From arrival to departure the staff were kind, friendly and welcoming. The dinner was worth every penny. Suitably more expensive than an average restaurant due to it's undeniable Michelin star status. However, it doesn't have an air of snobbery or pretentiousness. Despite the dark grey and silver decor, the staff are warm, hospitable and have time for everyone without being overbearing. They pull out your chair, they chat to you about wine and they just make you feel relaxed and allow you to enjoy the whole experience. The wine flight was a perfect addition. 7 wines, well picked to match, with lovely anecdotes about each one. Definitely worth the additional spend. So many of the dishes we tasted were rich and full of flavour. Right from the start with a little unexpected bite of crab all the way through to the petit fours at the end. A truly beautiful meal and the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion.

An absolutely amazing hotel with amazing views of Bowness from the restaurant. The architecture of old and new is outstanding 👌. The restaurant is absolutely amazing food, wine cellar and service is excellent. By far one of the best places in The Lake District. Highly recommend

The only thing I hated about this hotel is that they have a really old bentley, but the motor is electric. Who wants to not listen to a bentley? Apart from that the dining experience was great. I experienced flavours that I didn’t know existed. Every dish, every bite was a surprise. A good one at that. It was like a firework of flavours.

We had the most incredible 8-night stay at The Samling for our summer holiday- everything from start to finish was flawless. We stayed in the Grasmere room, which was beautifully designed with breathtaking views, while my fiancé’s parents stayed in Rydal Water, which was equally stunning. Both rooms had a luxurious yet cosy and homely feel and made for a truly relaxing getaway. The hotel has such a warm, family feel - like coming downstairs to old friends each morning. Every member of the team made us feel welcome and cared for in such a genuine way. A special thank you to Rebecca, who served us in the restaurant. Her knowledge of the extensive wine list and the food was exceptional- she truly elevated the dining experience. We tried both the tasting menu and the à la carte, and every dish was outstanding. We also really valued her sense of humour- she struck the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth, and made every meal even more enjoyable. We also want to thank Emma on reception, Tillie, Maisie, and Andrew, who were all wonderful. (We hope we’ve spelt everyone’s names right!). Maisie even went out of her way to call nearby restaurants she thought we’d like to check availability - completely unprompted - which was such a thoughtful and personal touch. And also thank you to all of the other wonderful waiting staff and housekeeping staff which we didn’t catch the names of. The private hot tub was a real treat - classy, peaceful, and perfect for unwinding while watching the local rabbits and deer, which added a magical touch to the whole stay. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and communication was always prompt and helpful on the lead up to the trip. Thank you so much for a stay we’ll never forget - we’re already looking forward to returning. Sarah and Will xxx

What better place can there be to celebrate our mutual 60th's, than at The Samling restaurant. We've just enjoyed a superb lunch with the lake and fells as our view, and with exceptional service too. My photos show the stunning Crab Tempura with Kombu Mayo for our starter and then Cod, Morecambe Bay Shrimps with Rigatoni and Caviar Emulsion as our mains. Very well priced for such high end cuisine. Well done the chefs. You should be very proud of your skills. The warm home made beer sourdough with marminte butter, or salted butter were fabulous too. A glass of champagne, and then a bottle of the lovely Pinot Gris both hit the spot of course. Thank you for making a special day as good as it can get. Highly recommended.

Carlisle Lake District Airport is a highly regarded parkland gem that has served as the venue for regional qualifying rounds of the Open Championship. With its challenging layout and demand for concentration, it offers an excellent opportunity to showcase golfing skills. Situated in the northern part of the county or Eden Valley, it's conveniently accessible from nearby cottages. The airport boasts top-notch amenities and a welcoming staff, making it an ideal destination not only for pilots but also aviation enthusiasts from the general public.
A wonderful experience flying in for a quick visit. A long, wide runway in perfect condition with first class Air/Ground radio assistance. All the staff are friendly and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. The pilot's lounge is in part of what would have been the terminal building and, by general aviation standards, it's palatial. Great views across the car park to the hills, which looked particularly beautiful on the bright, icy winter's day I visited. I'd encourage any GA flyer to visit Carlisle; we need to ensure facilities as good as this survive and develop.

Recently visited just for tourist purposes. I was quite fascinated by the planes some really old actually but in great condition. Good opportunity too!

The two children 5 and 8 had been before, and begged the grandparents (75 and 72) to go again. Sadly the children did not give us enough time to absorb a lot of the information. The boys knew the names of the aircraft (the guide book from the first visit had been well read). The visit to the Vulcan bomber was a real hit especially climbing the ladder for the 5 year old. Not necessarily recommended for every 5 year old. A very good visit, would like to return for a slower trip around the museum .

Such a shame, was probably all set up for lots business but then COVID hit it hard, I would however visit the Solway museum on the other side. At the terminal there were no working toilets and the business lounge was all locked up and that was on a Monday

Asked why they couldn’t give me change from a £20 note, then a £10 to be told I was rude, just for questioning? Absolutely shocking till service Won’t be getting any business from me anytime soon. Maybe send your staff on a customer relations course, cos thee was nothing here

A trip with a friend to take his plane from Blackpool AirPort down South for its Service. We dropped it off and flew back to Blackpool in a different plane as to will see from some of the footage.

We (family) we're stopping at the Premier Inn next to the airport at the time when Blackpool was hosting the airshow. We could see a large amount of the planes from our hotel window. At Morrisons, close by, you can see most of the planes taxiing to their apron. We were greeted by the red arrows flight squad on this occasion. Great for the kids.

Got sat down. Everything brilliant, then we took off(wasn’t the only thing that took off) something was wrong with the engine so we had to evacuate, it was my old nanas turn, they plugged her into her oxygen machine instead of the parachute and absolutely booted her off the plane it wasn’t till about 3 seconds later they tried grabbing her bald head back because they realised they where still holding onto the parachute in their arms, and my grandmas dentures flew into someone’s face and knocked them right out, and their kid was screaming, what a horrible sight for a kid. I looked out the escape door and my grandma hit a scaffolding pole and everything went tumbling down, I didn’t know she was so fat…anyway, Everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong. Awful plains but alright airport
