Piazza del Popolo, also known as Palazzo del Popolo, is a medieval square in Italy with a quadrangular conformation. Todi is a hilltop town in Umbria with amazing views, beautiful little streets to wander and many places to eat and drink. The centre of town is ZTL ( which means you have to park outside the walls) Once parked in the Public paid parking there is either a shuttle bus every 15 minutes or a funicular into town, both of which are offered gratis. This is a truly historic little village and deserves a visit if you are in the area.

Todi is a hilltop town town in Umbria with amazing views . Since the centre of town is ZTL ( which means you have to park outside the walls and if you make the mistake of driving in, trust me, the fine will@arrive in the mail 🥲) Todi offers excellent options to get their visitors to the centre. Once parked in the Public paid parking there is either a shuttle bus every 15 minutes or a funicular into town, both of which are offered free.

The walls are adorned with 13th-14th-century frescoes by Masolino da Panicale, and it houses the tomb of Beato Jacopone, the patron saint of Todi.
Be careful about the opening times, I was lucky, she opened the doors right in front of me....literally. Church is beautiful but for a small admition u get to clomb the bell tower which is the highest point in town. The view of town and surroundings is breath taking. Just hope they don't used the bells anymore🤣🤣

Monumento A Jacopone da Todi

Mentioned on

Cultural landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Monuments & Statues
Nestled in the charming town of Todi, the "Monumento A Jacopone da Todi" pays homage to the revered figure known as God's Jester. This Gothic church not only serves as a spiritual haven but also houses the tomb of Jacopone, a wandering Franciscan friar who boldly challenged Pope Boniface VIII and made significant contributions to poetry in the local dialect—preceding even Dante's works in Tuscany.
(Translated by Google) In 1906, on the occasion of the VI centenary of the death of the religious man, in Todi the specially set up Committee whose president was the then mayor P. Paparini, conceived among many initiatives the erection of a "bust or medallion, bronze or marble, representing Jacopone according to the fresco attributed to Dom. Veneziano" near the steps of the church of San Fortunato, the place where, according to tradition, his home. The execution of the work was entrusted to the Tuder sculptor Enrico Quattrini who, already a member of the Committee, accepted without asking for any monetary compensation; he prepared two sketches: the first exalted the spiritual and religious intensity of the poet while the second depicted Jacopone as a "man of laws and severe admonisher of the powerful"; in the assembly of 2 April 1907 the decision was taken in favor of the latter except that a few years later, despite contributions from various sources (Municipality, Ministry of Education, charitable bodies, literary institutes of the region, citizens), it was the precarious financial situation of the Committee that forced it to scale back the project, approving the creation of a plaque in place of the statue. Interesting story.. Interessante storia.. Grazie a Dio🙏🤚👍

Ristorante Pizzeria Cavour in Todi is a standout dining spot with consistently good quality and innovative, delicious menu. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, offering stupendous meals including a range of pizzas, primi and secondi. What sets this place apart is the free shuttle service in their own minibus for diners staying outside of Todi, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the wine and digestivo lists.
Extraordinary views and amazing food! We loved this place! The tortellini carbonara was to die for and the pizza was delicious. Prices were totally reasonable and service was excellent. We’re going back before we leave town!

Came in for the views, but the rain had other plans. Luckily, the food more than made up for it—it was amazing! Jasmine, our server, was attentive and calm even during the busy lunch rush, which really stood out. The only downside was the loud buzzer from the kitchen, which got a bit distracting. Other than that, everything was great, and I’d definitely come back. Edit: we decided to check out the garden. beautiful.

We were staying outside of Todi, so eating out means driving and parking. Not here though, they have a free shuttle service in their own minibus! I confirmed this was the case and the whole thing worked really smoothly. Lovely driver. This allowed us all to enjoy fully the wine and digestivo lists! The service is very friendly and the waiter who served us was great. There is a pretty terrace with beautiful views. The food is of a good standard: pizzas, pasta, meat. I had the black truffle pasta both times we dined there, it was so good. Great tiramisu, pana cotta, cheesecake, semifreddo and lemon sorbet (served in a lemon). The orange grappa, sambucca and limoncello all much enjoyed. Good value. Would definitely recommend for an enjoyable night out.

We also had a lovely waitress who was very patient with us and gave great recommendations for wine. Highly recommend :)

Pane e Vino is a cozy, family-run restaurant and wine bar located in Todi, a charming hill town in Umbria. It offers honest, well-priced food in rustic dining rooms and an attached wine bar. The house starter, antipasto della casa, features a delightful selection of cured meats, cheeses, crostini, and more. We stayed in Todi for two days on our way driving back up Italy. It's a great hill town in Umbria, and it's easy to see why it's been voted one of Italy's most livable places. While we were there, we found Pane e Vino, and liked it so much we ate there both nights. The food is inventive and well-cooked, using ingredients which are traditional in a mountain area like this, but each dish felt fresh and considered. The staff were helpful, and made excellent (and reasonably priced) recommendations for local wine, and the owner made us feel very welcome. He's a real character, and rattled through the menu in a mixture of Italian and English. I'd happily drive all the way back from the UK to Todi, just to have dinner there again.

It’s the first place after exiting the funicular from the parking lot. But that isn’t why it’s usually packed. It’s a local’s hangout and they rush in early. It specializes in seasonal dishes with agretti, wild asparagus or artichokes. Slow roasted. Try to sit on the ground floor if possible. You can sit outside but beware the smokers.

Trattoria Da Piero e Silvana is a charming restaurant located within the walls of the old town in Todi. It's conveniently accessible with a short walk from parking areas outside the walls. The atmosphere is simple but pleasant, with a few tables set beside the street. The food is genuine and typical, with a focus on quality ingredients. Guests have praised the memorable bread (crescia) and delicious antipasto featuring salumi and cheese.
Really nice atmosphere and very good service. It’s a very boutique restaurant in the historical center of Todi, if you are in town for a short visit, this restaurant is a must go. They serve all the traditional Umbri food, including Strangozzi, gnocchi, salami di cervo, salami di cinghiale, ragù di cinghiale, etc. , really good eating!

Perfect trattoria in Todi, family feel because it’s true. Excellent dishes even portion wise on the large side in a good way. As people before have stated just stick with the house wine you’ll be fine and it’s a great price. Outside or inside seating although for outside I would make a reservation. Everything was top notch! Well done !

This is a very cool medieval-style place. The Strega soup is delicious and comes with an important history lesson and some magical (literally) sides.

The food was so, so delicious. The vegetarian antipasti was incredible with all the flavours and different options. The staff was very nice. It is just a pity that we did not have enough place for the dessert. We would love to come back.

The food was tasty, but we were really disappointed to be treated as one-time dining tourists. We are American but have a home in Umbria - and have never been treated like an outsider in Umbria until today. Very disappointed in the poor service and attention we got (practically ignored) and will not return.

Primi: perfectly cooked Arrabiata. Secondi: The most delicious wild boar stew, complimented with perfectly crisp roast potatoes. Portion-size very generous and hearty! Local beer full of flavour and recommended for something different to the 'commercial' beer. Friendly and swift service, and reasonably priced. Well worth strolling down from the main centre to enjoy an authentic Umbrian meal. Loved it!

Le Scalette is a top restaurant in Todi with an upmarket setting and friendly staff. Visitors praise the amazing tiramisus and well-cooked meals, especially the 'Fillet of Beef with Truffle'. The terrace offers lovely views of Todi and the countryside during dinner, creating a wonderful golden hour experience. The restaurant's delicious food, great atmosphere, and helpful staff make it stand out among other dining options in Todi.
INCREDIBLE! My family and I (celiac) stopped here for lunch after trying to find a gluten free restaurant between Perugia and Viterbo and wow am I glad this is what we picked. Everything that we ordered was great. They informed me that almost the entire menu could be made gluten free. We ordered a mixed fried appetizer that included things like sage, apples, zucchini flowers, and rice balls. For our meals we got their carbonara with artichokes gluten free and two orders of the pork with salted caramel sauce. For dessert my dad had the pan seared panettone with homemade cream and limoncello and I had the gluten free no bake cheesecake with wild berry topping. Everything was amazing but the caramel pork really stole the show in all of our opinions and is possibly one of the best dishes we've ever had. I was so lucky to find somewhere so ready to accommodate my gluten free diet and would love to pass back by here in warmer months to enjoy their beautiful terrace!

Visitors can enjoy the picturesque surroundings of hills, olive groves, and sunflower fields while savoring delicious Italian cuisine. The friendly and helpful staff add to the dining experience, making it a must-visit spot for those exploring Todi.
Excellent restaurant with a breathtaking view. The food was spectacular and the Braised Venison with Porcini mushrooms was the best I ever had. A day later I went back with a larger party and everyone loved it. Excellent wine as well. Reasonably priced for the quality of the food and the spectacular view.

We extended our stay in Todi by half a day to eat at Ristorante Umbria, such is its reputation. We weren’t disappointed. The food is very traditional of the area, made with lovely ingredients. We had the rabbit with capers, pasta with fresh black truffle, and a glass each of chilled Grechetto. Delicious — and when combined with the view over the Umbrian countryside, it was well worth staying for.
Stephen M — Google review
One of our very favorites - the Tortelli with pistachio is a must-try and be sure to see how the cook the delicious meats on a grill in the old-fashioned fire place surrounded by historical maps and other Umbrian decor. If you reserve right when they open you are guaranteed one of the best views (they have the best view of any restaurant in Todi) and the staff are superb.

La Cantina Del Mercataccio

Italian restaurant
La Cantina Del Mercataccio is a charming restaurant located on a stairway off the main street, featuring a lovely terrace for enjoying meals in good weather. The recent change in chef has brought about high praise for the wonderful and fresh food. Dishes like filetto di manzo and ravioli with pumpkin are highly recommended. Guests appreciate the delicious and reasonably priced food, especially during truffle season when generous portions of truffle are served.
I’ve never given a restaurant 5 stars but La Cantina del Mercataccio deserves it. The food was wonderful and fresh. I had the filetto di manzo and it was so tender and the chef has some very tasty ingredients along with the steak. I also had the ravioli with pumpkin and it was fantastic. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If you ever find yourself in Todi, be sure to make time to stop in for lunch or dinner. Or both. We’re going back tomorrow for lunch and so looking forward to it! Oh and the desserts are divine.
Scot S — Google review
This cozy restaurant tucked away in central Todi offers a refined yet welcoming dining experience, with a menu that leans into Sicilian influences, thanks to the chef's roots. The menu is small and curated, which makes every dish feel intentional and well-executed. The meal began with a delightful whole grain toast, topped with sautéed vegetables, marinated tomatoes, and a perfectly fried egg yolk that oozed richness. The acidity of the tomatoes balanced beautifully with the creamy yolk, all resting on a slice of crunchy, hearty breada. The tortelloni were another highlight: generously filled with guinea fowl, perfectly al dente, and served with a light yet umami-packed Parmesan foam that enhanced every bite. The Sicilian caponata was a standout - expertly balanced between sweet, sour, and acidic notes, and deeply flavorful. Though, be careful, as there are olive pits. The only disappointment was the Sicilian cassata. Expecting the classic version with fresh ricotta and marzipan, the cake served was pleasant, but lacked in ricotta flavor and the unique flair typical of traditional cassata. Service was exceptional - friendly, professional, and attentive throughout the meal. Given the rather small portion sizes, the prices are on the higher end. Nevertheless, the quality and care put into the dishes make this a worthwhile dining experience.

Stumbled across this beautiful restaurant completely by accident when a booking we made elsewhere had fallen through. We were warmly welcomed by the friendliest and very knowledgeable staff who helpfully informed me they could make anything on the menu gluten free for me. The children ate all their food (which is a first) which was a beautiful tomato pasta very rich in flavour. The truffle pasta was absolutely delicious and the veal carpaccio was a winner with the table. The staff picked a perfect wine accompaniment for us and it was all very reasonably priced. Highly recommend! Best gluten free pasta I have tasted, photo below!

This place was just amazing. The service was caring and friendly, the view stunning, and the food to die for. Let me just say: real fresh truffle, grated right in front of you! And if you have a sweet tooth, trust me, you must try the Croststa with ricotta, chocolate and pears - a wonderful surprise!
Silvia D — Google review
A fantastic dinner at La Cantina Del Mercataccio. We started with the bone marrow beef tartare, rich, perfectly balanced, and the veal carpaccio, generously topped with fresh truffle shaved at the table, which was a real highlight. The fried rabbit was crisp and full of flavour, paired beautifully with a glass of local Sangiovese. Warm, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere made it all the better. Highly recommend.

The restaurant staff next door were extremely rude when we asked to see the menu and then closed the door in another family’s face - so we walked a few yards down the road and found this wonderful gem. The owner was charming and reserved us a table saying he opened in 5 minutes - the service was attentive and very friendly. The view was amazing and the food was imaginative and very tasty. They were extremely accommodating and gave vegetarian and vegan options when asked. Had a memorable evening. Would highly recommend
Jacqui S — Google review
I really wanted to try the food. Im sure it was going to be amazing. After 20mins of waiting for our server (super understaffed) we decided to leave when she took 2 other parties order before us. The Menu looks amazing and would recommend this for someone who's not Hungry and willing to wait 30mins to be served more than water.
Edmundo M — Google review
After more than thirty-five years in Italy, we recently had one of our most disappointing dinners, at La Cantina Del Mercataccio. Our tagliolini al tartufo bianco arrived lukewarm, the delicate truffle aroma lost. The waiter was attentive and offered to replace it, but with our main courses on the way, we declined. My filetto di maiale then appeared cold, with a warmish sauce served on a cold plate. It was taken back, and its replacement arrived only after everyone else had long finished eating. The final surprise came with the bill: €38 per plate of pasta. When we questioned the charge, the manager insisted the price reflected the truffle. Given the quality of the meal, this seemed unjustifiable. We eat pasta with truffles often, but never at such a ridiculous price (which was not shown on the menu!). A token €7 discount on a dinner for 4 did little to soften the impression. Despite polite service, the kitchen execution and pricing left much to be desired. For a restaurant that aims high, La Cantina Del Mercataccio fell short on both warmth and value.

Overall: not go again. We must have caught them on a bad day! Cant believe the good reviews. Food: terrible. Bread rock hard. Brasola was dry and hard. Cheese they got away with but was still nothing to brag about. Beverage: wine white was strong vinegary- not like the Umbria wine we had the day before- golden. Staff: sweet lady. Service: nice and friendly lady Dogs: yes as outdoors Atmosphere: we came early so noone around but was a nice location with a view. The actual decor was basic - AstroTurf grass Price: for 5 people, apertivo, 3 glasses of wine and an apero spritz = EUR60. (Our taste buds: Western minds, Eastern hearts and stomachs!)

Happiness in Umbrian country restaurant form If you’ve been in the Umbrian countryside, uou should know the type - large restaurant, gigantic appetizer platter, lots of meat options, even more options from the grill, really good pasta, quite inexpensive, and all very very good. Italian restaurant
Osteria Valle is a charming and welcoming restaurant that offers authentic Umbrian cuisine with a modern twist. The owner, Simone, is a fantastic host who personally attends to each table and shares his inspiration behind the dishes. The friendly staff adds to the inviting atmosphere. The menu features flavorful dishes, such as Tonnarelli alla Gricia con tartufo and Tartare di manzo con cuore di burrata, pomodori secchi e pistacchio.
Some of the best pasta in Todi, a good balance between classic Umbrian cuisine and more refined Italian cuisine. Overall a good experience. My only wish is that the menu would have a few more "classic Italian" favorites which I recall the menu having when I visited a few years ago. Nonetheless, highly recommended if you are in town.
Jay S — Google review
A modern take on classic Umbrian cuisine. Simone, the owner explained the dishes and his inspiration - he is a wonderful host and incredible how he puts his personal touch on all the tables and guests. He is both personable, attentive and knowledgeable. We loved his friendly staff too who were always available. The food was on another level. When you've had one too many traditional style dishes, this just mixes it up very well. The smoked goose was such a great way to start on a bed of bitter and fresh rocket and drizzled with Modena balsamic. Delicious pairing. The cuttlefish was cut and mixed with vegetables, it's deep flavour shined through and was definitely a unique combination. Pasta was as Al dente, perfect with the sauce and truffle. Best pasta we've had so far on our trip. Lastly, the limoncello was a great digestif to end the meal on such a high note. Thank you and we'll be back again!

Authentic Italian home cooking in a cosy restaurant just outside the city centre. Definitely one of the better meals we had in Todi, with every dish packed with flavour. The menu highlights allergens, and I would say the only negative was that there’s no gluten free pasta, which meant I couldn’t try their much-hyped rabbit ragu. Maybe next time!
Phoebe W — Google review
Very cute and friendly Osteria with authentic Umbrian food I would highly recommend the Tonnarelli alla Gricia con tartufo (Gricia prepared without eggs and without tomato, only with guanciale , pepper and pecorino cheese which is used “bind" the pasta as it comes in contact with hot pasta, it melts, forming a kind of cream) and the Tartare di manzo con cuore di burrata, pomodori secchi e pistacchio Grazie Simone e Benedetta!!!

Transportation in Todi

Getting around Todi can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

San Francesco d'Assisi Airport

International airport
Airport
Nestled just twelve kilometers east of Perugia, San Francesco d'Assisi Airport is a charming little hub that embodies convenience and efficiency. With only four flights operating during my visit, navigating through security and passport control was a breeze—no long lines to contend with! The airport's compact design means everything is within easy walking distance; from car rentals to bag drop counters, it’s all just a few steps away.
Small but cost. When you arrive you can take a taxi for 35 euro or a bus AirLink to Perugia for 5 euro adults and 2.5 euro children over 4 year. The trip with buss is almost 35 minutes.
Tiberiu I — Google review
I think 4 star is fair here, small airport that could probably handle check-in better, I was flying with BA and it was not clearly displayed when check-in opened, and then moved at a snail pace for the first 30 minutes due to a limited number of desks being open. But after check in the airport is nice and relaxed with minimal fuss on security or passport control. Lots of seating area, a few small shops (Don't expect a big duty free area). And a cafe. Relaxed atmosphere can't fault it after the check-in.
Sean M — Google review
This is a little airport so the lines to passport control are long. Baggage check was fast enough. Number of chairs sufficient. The only thing you should be aware is lack of parking. We saw the cars parked basically everywhere. Due to proximity to Assisi Perugia Airport should be expanded. Five stars because we didn’t run in any problems but some people might have issues due to size of the facility.
Bo — Google review
Compact yet functional airport. We were pleased with the service from all the staff in the airport. Since the airport is well planned, everything was at a walking distance. We dropped the car, walked next door to the departures, and checked out the car rental. The bag drop counters were literally the next one and so were the security checks. The ryanair guys were pleasing and got us checked in at record time. Having said that, we only had one flight flying through during the hour we checked in and a total of 5 flights all through the noon. The seating areas are limited and hence that could be an issue if waiting for a long duration. But this probably is one of the smoothest experiences for us.
Emily R — Google review
Even though security at the airport is super fast and people is very nice, the airport temperature is crazy hot, around 30 C degrees inside (25 outside) It just can’t be, the AC needs to be on. There are so many unnecessary lights on when natural light is more than enough but the AC is off.
Mauro P — Google review
Really small airport, easy to reach by bus from perugia or assisi. There is a little cafe but if you're vegetarian you better bring your lunch if you're hungry :D as it's a super small airport, there is no need to be there hours before. Staff is really friendly!! :)
Danina L — Google review
This is a tiny airport that mainly seems to service Ryanair. So there are minimal facilities and a long queue for hot drinks. On the other hand there are barely any gates and you don't have to walk far to the plane.
Damian C — Google review
People are nice and welcoming, but the conditions are terrible. No AC, the check in is too slow and there’s like one café only. You could do so much to this little airport.
