Piazza del Popolo, also known as Palazzo del Popolo, is a medieval square in Italy with a quadrangular conformation. It was once the City Forum during Roman times and is now home to some of the most significant buildings in Todi. The Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Capitano, Civic Museum, and Pinacoteca overlook the square from one end while the Cathedral stands at the other.
Todi is a hilltop town in Umbria with amazing views, beautiful little streets to wander and many places to eat and drink. The centre of town is ZTL ( which means you have to park outside the walls) Once parked in the Public paid parking there is either a shuttle bus every 15 minutes or a funicular into town, both of which are offered gratis. This is a truly historic little village and deserves a visit if you are in the area.

Todi is a hilltop town town in Umbria with amazing views . Since the centre of town is ZTL ( which means you have to park outside the walls and if you make the mistake of driving in, trust me, the fine will@arrive in the mail 🥲) Todi offers excellent options to get their visitors to the centre. Once parked in the Public paid parking there is either a shuttle bus every 15 minutes or a funicular into town, both of which are offered free.

Chiesa di San Fortunato, located in Piazza Umberto, Todi, is a stunning Gothic-meets-Renaissance-style church with an incomplete facade and a vaulted interior. The walls are adorned with 13th-14th-century frescoes by Masolino da Panicale, and it houses the tomb of Beato Jacopone, the patron saint of Todi.
Be careful about the opening times, I was lucky, she opened the doors right in front of me....literally. Church is beautiful but for a small admition u get to clomb the bell tower which is the highest point in town. The view of town and surroundings is breath taking. Just hope they don't used the bells anymore🤣🤣

(Translated by Google) The church of San Fortunato in Todi, begun in Romanesque style in 1192 and rebuilt in Gothic style starting in 1292, had its façade left unfinished. It stands atop a staircase and features a three-nave interior with frescoed chapels, including works by Masolino da Panicale and Andrea Polinori. The choir contains wooden stalls from 1590, and the crypt holds the remains of Jacopone da Todi; some original works are now in the Pinacoteca Comunale. Nestled in the charming town of Todi, the "Monumento A Jacopone da Todi" pays homage to the revered figure known as God's Jester. This Gothic church not only serves as a spiritual haven but also houses the tomb of Jacopone, a wandering Franciscan friar who boldly challenged Pope Boniface VIII and made significant contributions to poetry in the local dialect—preceding even Dante's works in Tuscany.
(Translated by Google) In 1906, on the occasion of the VI centenary of the death of the religious man, in Todi the specially set up Committee whose president was the then mayor P. Paparini, conceived among many initiatives the erection of a "bust or medallion, bronze or marble, representing Jacopone according to the fresco attributed to Dom. Veneziano" near the steps of the church of San Fortunato, the place where, according to tradition, his home. The execution of the work was entrusted to the Tuder sculptor Enrico Quattrini who, already a member of the Committee, accepted without asking for any monetary compensation; he prepared two sketches: the first exalted the spiritual and religious intensity of the poet while the second depicted Jacopone as a "man of laws and severe admonisher of the powerful"; in the assembly of 2 April 1907 the decision was taken in favor of the latter except that a few years later, despite contributions from various sources (Municipality, Ministry of Education, charitable bodies, literary institutes of the region, citizens), it was the precarious financial situation of the Committee that forced it to scale back the project, approving the creation of a plaque in place of the statue. Interesting story.. Interessante storia.. Grazie a Dio🙏🤚👍

If you choose the visit without a guide at the entrance they offer you a brochure. We chose the visit without a guide. We were given the brochure. Which is not a book but a simple BROCHURE. At the exit we said goodbye to the gentleman who had bought the tickets at the entrance and had donated the brochure. And here is the surprise: this gentleman when saying goodbye asked for the brochure to be returned!!!! He left us speechless!!! However, it is not a visit that has particular merits for the contents compared to the cultural heritage that we have in Italy. Asking for the brochure to be returned seemed an unkind act (not to mention other things). With all the beauty of the cathedral and the Crypt I do not recommend the bishop's palace (Original) Si visitano soltanto due sale.

Nestled in the charming town of Todi, the Church of San Nicolò is a captivating gem that dates back to the 14th century. This intimate single-nave church features stunning round arches that support its wooden ceiling, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors. At the altar, you'll find a striking wax statue of Saint Nicholas, adding to its spiritual allure. The complex also includes remnants of an older church built within a Roman amphitheater, though only its facade remains today.

Unfortunately, on September 22, 2023, it was inaccessible and everything suggests it had been inaccessible for some time. A real shame because reading the other reviews confirms that it is a complex of some importance. I didn't even find any indications on the name of the church because there is no indication on the outside, not even of a tourist nature. Searching with Google Maps later, I see the name of San Nicolò, but not even Google Maps highlights it. Nestled near the historic Porta Aurea, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe stands as a stunning representation of 17th-century Baroque architecture in Todi. Constructed in 1640 for the local carpenters' guild, this church honors Saint Joseph, their patron saint. While it may not be open to visitors like some other churches in Todi, its rich history and artistic beauty make it a noteworthy landmark.
(Translated by Google) The Church of S. Giuseppe is a beautiful example of baroque art. Unfortunately it is one of the churches in Todi such as: Santa Maria in Cammuccia, San Silvestro, Sant' Antonio, Il Sacro Cuore, la Nunziatina, etc., which are not open to visitors. San Giuseppe has been there for centuries. headquarters of the "University" of Todi carpenters. A sort of brotherhood, which even today has its adherents. Inside there were, until a few years ago, ancient documents perhaps transferred to the historical archive. Due to the interest of the University of Carpenters, who have custody of it, the Church is opened for worship only on 19 March, the feast of St. Joseph, protector of carpenters. (Translated by Google) The Church of San Giuseppe, located near Porta Aurea in Todi, is a fascinating example of 17th century Baroque architecture. Built in 1642, this church was commissioned by the guild of carpenters and cabinetmakers, who chose Saint Joseph as their patron saint, reflecting the devotion of the artisan workers of the time. Inside, the main altar houses a valuable canvas from 1623 created by Andrea Polinori, depicting the Holy Family with Saint Joseph intent on his work as a carpenter. This painting is particularly significant, as it illustrates the centrality of manual labor and family in the spirituality of the time. The church also preserves other 17th century paintings, further enriching its artistic heritage. Worthy of note is the organ from 1729, an instrument that has accompanied liturgies for centuries, testifying to the liveliness of the local religious community. An interesting curiosity concerns the position of the church: being located near Porta Aurea, one of the historical accesses to the city, it served as a spiritual reference point for travelers and pilgrims entering Todi. Furthermore, the proximity to the artisans' workshops underlines the deep connection between the church and the daily life of the community. For visitors interested in exploring the Church of St. Joseph, it is advisable to inquire about opening times, as it may not always be accessible to the public. On the occasion of the feast of St. Joseph on March 19, the church is usually open for celebrations and visits, offering an ideal opportunity to appreciate its art and spiritual atmosphere. The visit to the Church of San Giuseppe represents an immersion in the artisanal and religious history of Todi, allowing you to better understand the traditions and devotion that have shaped the city over the centuries. (If you liked my review click ❤️. Thank you! As you stroll southward from the arch, you'll find yourself on Via Giacomo Matteotti. This stretch of road transitions into a quieter residential neighborhood that may not be as captivating as other parts of the city. If you're feeling adventurous and decide to walk to its end, you'll encounter Porta Romana, another set of historic gates.

Via del Duomo offers a relatively easy ascent, but the effort is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the town's main area, featuring the distant Duomo and lush hills in the backdrop. The Renaissance church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, reminiscent of Bramante's style, and Porta Amerina, one of the few remaining gates from the outer wall on the southern side, are also visible from this vantage point.

Peace Place very nice

A place of singular beauty for all those who search for silence and peace. The way of the cross is inspiring for its sculptures as well as for the setting. The crypt and the basilica are also inspiring with it's cylindrical architecture. The chapel of the cross is unique for its beauty. Was happy to note the words on top of the cross in Latin Greek and Aramaic. The crown at the foot of the cross and Jesus who is still alive with eyes open, interceding for mercy.

The Concattedrale della Santissima Annunziata in Todi is a must-see for several reasons. It sits at the end of a massive travertine staircase, offering a magnificent view over Piazza del Popolo. The cathedral's lombard-style facade with a beautiful rose window rests on the remains of a Roman temple, making it one of Italy's protected cultural monuments.
11th century gothic cathedral which was destroyed at the end of 12th. Loved an old wooden statue of Mary inside. The other important work of art is the 13th-century Crucifixion above altair. When u go half way in the church turn around and enjoy magnificent frescoe of the last judgement. If u were in the Sistine chapel in Vatican, well Michelangelo was someone u can try to copy...try. From steps of cathedral u can observe the life in piazza....before u melt in the hot summer sun🤣.

A beautiful church, with museum under the foundation, worth a visit
Hartmut P — Google review
We recently attended Mass at the Cathedral (Duomo) in Todi, Italy. Todi is a medieval walled city in Umbria that date back to the Etruscans. The city has many attractions for those interested in the area history as well as good restaurants. After the service we met with the choir director and his family. It turned out the director's wife, Elisa Picchiotti, works at the museum and operates a tour guide company. Elisa remembered us from the museum in the Piazza del Popolo where she volunteers and we had recently visited. When we found out she did tours we quickly arranged a tour. Elisa grew up in Todi, is a university graduate an accomplished historian and is very passionate about Todi and the surrounding towns in Umbria. She speaks excellent English. Our walking tour included the Todi Cathedral, San Fortunato Church, the Piazza, Bishops palace, and generally the area around the city center of Todi. It included many fascinating details that most people would not ever notice such as the scandalous carvings on the entrance of the San Fortunato Church that have been there for centuries. Elisa was genuinely interested in making our visit to Todi memorable. I highly recommend her for a tour of Todi; visit her website todiguide.com for contact information and to see the other areas in Umbria that she will give tours.

It soars but doesn’t awe. Stark inside with a plain design. You know how they built it. Simply. Tour guide seem to struggle to keep their travelers interested.

Chiesa della Consolazione, also known as Chiesa della Nunziatina, is a stunning church located behind the Duomo in Todi. It is often referred to as the 'Sistine Chapel' for a reason. The interior of the church is adorned with vibrant and beautifully painted frescoes that depict episodes from the life of Mary. Visitors are captivated by the colorful works of art that adorn this small gem hidden behind Todi's cathedral.
I would miss this small jewel of Todi if I haven't turn into turist office. The lady there told me it must to see (maybe because i had to pay to enter it...😂), but it was worth it. A small chapel whith interior in all frescoes. Loved the ceiling, there is an old confesion box inside, I don't know if i could use it today.... On the side u can see a relic od John of the cross.

In reality it deserves 5* but they don’t accept card to pay the ticket …for some reason, still at “cash only” here.
Alex J — Google review
The worst churches I have ever been after having to pay for an entry. This is a tourist scam. Try to avoid this tourist scam and spend your money wisely on something else. Worst experience. I haven’t paid money even at the one of the most beautiful church in Rome. Avoid this trap

(Translated by Google) In the heart of Todi, not far from the cathedral, stands the Oratory of the Santissima Annunziata, known as the Church of the Nunziatina, an elegant example of 17th-century Baroque architecture. Behind the simple façade lies a single space rich in color, gilded stucco, angels, flowers, and fruit, earning it the nickname "Little Sistine Chapel." Built for the Company of the Santissima Nunziata to assist pilgrims, it houses valuable works such as a panel inspired by Veronese's Wedding at Cana and Andrea Polinori's 1627 painting depicting Jacopone da Todi in ecstasy before the crucifix.
