Nestled in the heart of Japan, the San'nai-Maruyama iseki Special Historical Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the Jōmon period, showcasing one of the largest settlements from this era. Dating back to between 2000 and 3500 BC, this remarkable site was only fully recognized after extensive excavations revealed its significance. It flourished alongside iconic structures like Stonehenge and Egypt's Great Pyramid.
Incredibly insightful and well-designed museum. All of the artifacts and exhibits are very well preserved and/or reconstructed, and the displays provide easy-to-digest and informative narratives. There's quite a bit to see, so it's definitely worth a short trip.

Date of enjoyment: 17/4/25 An amazing collection and display of history and treasure of how ancient Japanese lived over 5000 years ago. The preservation of the architecture and buried pottery needs to be seen in life to be appreciated. This is an open air museum but does have an indoor section, best to come here along with the Art museum next door. Allow at least 90mins here to explore.
Jay C — Google review
We had an hour to spare before we returned our rental car at AOJ, so we decided to check out this historical site, since it's only 20 minute drive from the airport. This is an amazing place to visit in Aomori, and I wish I spent 3-4 hours here. There is so much to see so we are so bummed we didn't have time for the museum. The staff is so helpful, providing suggestions and even helped track down our cell phone left at the restroom. We went to the theater to get the historical background of the site. With the help of Google Translate live transcribe feature I was able to follow along. I hope in the future they would incorporate English caption. We then checked out the expansive excavations outside, very intriguing to say the least.
Carl W — Google review
An incredible museum showing the ancient Jomon civilization of Japanese pre-history. There are reconstructed huts and halls from the era, as well as active dig sites that illustrate the archaeological process. Well worth coming to see this. The outdoor village is the best part, however the museum and it's exhibits inside are also well made and very informative.
Nathan F — Google review
A peek into the past that was well worth the visit. It’s wonderful that the research is continuing at the archeological site and that there is much more to discover and learn. It was easy to get to; we caught the P51 bus there and A1 back at the end of the day. One of the tour guides was with a group of beautiful University students, she noticed us (Australians) and encouraged us to join them. They were so very gracious and generous with their time explaining points of interest to us. We also used google translate which made a few funny errors but that actually added joy to our communication and so enhanced the experience. Sincerely appreciate the hospitality of the staff in particular the beautiful guide rostered on in the afternoon of the 8th October at the excavation and historical site.
Kathryn R — Google review
Perfect, they have coin lockers that are all 100¥ even big ones (you can easily fit a suitcase) and it's only lending, which means they give you your coin back afterwards. When I came there was still snow so I couldn't see everything but it was very interesting, especially handcrafts which you can learn to do by yourself with someone's help, and they even have kits to teach you how to do your own thing at home which is simply incredible, definitely recommend, I spend 2 to 3 hours and don't regret it at all, the staff is also extremely nice
Océane L — Google review
Interesting site of a former Joumon settlement. Lots of information is available about the finds and the site, as well as reconstructions of some houses and structures to give an impression of what the area might have looked like.
Gareth M — Google review
It's a gorgeous place that has many activities throughout the day but if you are coming and goi g with public transport you should plan carefully as there are very few busses a day and very far between. Better to come with your own car so not to rush. You get 100 yen off the entry if you go to the Art museum first on the same day and show them the ticket

Nebuta Museum WA RASSE is a vibrant red museum that offers a glimpse into the Aomori Nebuta festival, featuring impressive parade floats and captivating taiko drum displays. The museum aims to capture the lively atmosphere, history, and traditions of the festival through its exhibitions of images, objects, and sounds spanning 300 years. Visitors can also enjoy live haneto performances and marvel at five actual floats on display.
Such an awesome museum. It doesn’t take much time to get through but there’s lots to see. All the sculptures were amazing and having one on display to touch was a cool experience. The gift shop had some unique products too.
Quincy — Google review
Absolutely amazing to view. I may have to visit again to see the parade in person. Seeing the master artists being honored for their amazing work is wonderful. The photos don't really show the scale and brilliance - a MUST see if you are in the area!
Audrey T — Google review
Nebuta Festival is the largest summer festival in Aomori, which large lantern floats made of paper, parading the lively streets at night. It's perhaps as popular in Japan as the Rose parade in Pasadena. The adult entrance fee is 620¥, and available for purchase on the 2nd floor. The friendly staff will help guide you navigate the ticket machine. They also offer free Taiko drum shows a few times a day. The exit will take you to the souvenir shop. It is a wonderful experience to learn and have a glimpse of the local culture. All in all, we spent about an hour in there. And if you're visiting during apple season in October, there're several apple trees outside full with mini apples.
Carl W — Google review
A must visit if you’re in Aomori. They showcase the history with film showings. You can also participate in playing the drums and other musical instruments when there’s a singer. The paper lanterns are stunning to look at. There’s a gift store selling food products and souvenirs.

The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse is the definitive cultural hub for Aomori Prefecture. The stunning exterior architecture is a must-see, and inside, the museum offers a fascinating deep dive into Nebuta history and the intricate float construction process. The exhibition of authentic, full-sized floats is fabulous and truly stunning. For a phenomenal experience, be sure to check the schedule for their live performances! Attending a show offers the unique opportunity to join the dancers and play the festival instruments, making it a highly interactive and memorable visit.

Aomori is worldwide known for its Nebuta festival happening in August. If you want to get a taste of it you have to visit this museum and learn more about it. The entrance is not expensive at all. Less than 5 dollars. The museum has 2 floors. On the first you will learn all about its origins and on the lower one is the nebuta hall, where you will see these incredible works of art. These fully-sized Nebuta have participated in the festivals. The museum also have a shop where you can find several kinds of souvenirs.
Ana T — Google review
Beautiful museum, both inside and outside. The architecture is great, but the festival floats of the Nebuta are greater. They hold some incredibly beautiful and impressive pieces, a must in case you visit the city outside if the dates of the festival itself. The museum shop also offers a pretty wide range of souvenirs such as t-shirts, magnets, cards, and other trinkets.

Informative, friendly and a great place to come all seasons. Craft and celebration of the past. Learn and be amazed. Do check on live performance times. For us the 11.10, (13.10, 12.30, 14.00 & 15.30) performance on the stage just about to start. Yay!

The Aomori Museum of Art is a contemporary museum showcasing innovative art by local and national artists. It is a must-visit destination in Aomori, featuring white cube gallery spaces hosting various exhibitions. The museum also offers an observatory with stunning views of the city, Mutsu Bay, and the surrounding peninsulas.
Shiko Munakata’s signature works are there in this museum!!! And there is Toshimoto Nara solo as well which was a pleasant surprise! This museum takes about a good 3- 4 hours if you wanna see everything thoroughly. I skipped the Miyazaki show at the end but it was still a good 2.5 hours visit. Be mindful of the snow banks in the winter. I went in Feb and it was a nightmare to walk from the bus stop to the museum, and I’m from Canada🤣🤣🤣
Zee — Google review
Came down here on the 19th of April 2025, there happens to be an opening exhibition by Yasuhiko Yoshikazu and the lines were already forming an hour before the doors open. The museum opens at 930am despite all other google search. There is a contemporary edge to this Use in as the outside roof height is very low, however on the inside the roof heights are huge as some art works are massive. After some zigzagging we got to the AkitaInu famous for their loyalty and dedication.

Great art museum with its own unique art pieces exclusive to the museum. Also seems as though they do well at having interesting rotating exhibits. While I was there they had an activity where you could make a painting in the style of Nui Sano who has a large a beautiful exhibit on show. Staff instruct and assist you to complete the painting and you take it home for free! Dog is big and impressive as advertised to.

Another interesting art museum to visit during a trip in Aomori. You will explore many different perspectives of arts from several artists around Japan. Quite a few family friendly activities.

I love this art museum. The atmosphere is peaceful and almost meditative. They have many art works of Nara Yoshitomo. Plenty of seating available. I always wondered why Aomori-Ken looks so sad. Maybe he doesn’t like his food?🤭

Love this museum, A must see in Aomori. The 安彥良和exhibition is amazing to see all his hand sketches and to watch the comic characters that he creates. Many original painting are classic. I am very lucky to see it this time during my travel in Aomori

Normally I'm not a big fan of art museums but this museum really exceeded my expectations. The art is amazing and it has some great unique statues. The statues are free and you only need to pay for the expositions. Also, the cafe has some really good food. Definitely recommend when visiting Aomori.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a vibrant celebration that showcases the large and powerful Nebuta floats, along with dynamic Haneto dances that exude vitality. This festival encourages people to make the most of the short Tohoku summer. However, in recent years, there have been challenges such as overcrowding and disruptions to daily life due to its growing size and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

They don't kid around when they wanna do a parade...😆 Nebuta Festival 青森ねぶた祭 Pro-tip. Get the parade route, choose the first large junction, camp the turning spot, choose a vantage point, be a tall person 😆 And oh yes, learn some Japanese. Nothing here is in English. Don't be the chap being told to leave after camping the spot for an hour 😆

No words can describe the experience. The floats, drums, dancing and atmosphere. Something I'll possibly never experience again in my lifetime.

(Translated by Google) I visited on August 2, 2025. There was a lot of excitement and a lot of people. It was amazing. There were supposedly 15 nebuta floats, but it felt like there were many more. I watched from a paid seat. At first, the impressive nebuta caught my eye, but there were plenty of other highlights, like the dancers chanting "Wassera, Wasserah!" and the musical performers. There was a wide variety, including nebuta from local neighborhoods, companies, and nursery schools. The highlight was probably the large nebuta rotating. If you're coming by car, you'll need to be careful about parking. Parking is only available at the west exit of the station. However, it's about a 40-minute walk to Aomori Green Hotel. It was also a bit confusing that there were no guides for the paid seats. You'll want to book your accommodation well in advance.

(Translated by Google) 👹Of the three major summer festivals in Tohoku, the Nebuta Matsuri is truly worth a visit! 👺It usually takes place in early August, so it's worth planning ahead. The streets of Aomori are bustling with Nebuta lanterns, featuring dancing figures, taiko drums, and flute music. Accompanied by drum beats and shouts, the Nebuta parades forward, spinning around corners. These angles offer a great way to capture the Nebuta in various poses. 🔥We visited Aomori in the summer and visited the Nebuta House to learn about the history of Nebuta lantern production. The entire experience was fascinating and left a lasting impression. 🏮If you're planning a trip to Tohoku, consider the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, but remember that it's only held in the summer.

(Translated by Google) My first visit was during the regular season, and I learned about the festival at the Nebuta Museum. My second visit was during the Nebuta season. On August 6th, I saw the Nebuta parade. If you go a little early and ask the staff at the shops and companies behind the chairs if there are any omotenashi seats, you can sit for free. You can get a brochure for the parade at the information center. The fireworks (hanabi) display can be seen from the factory to the street next to ASPAM, but if you want a good spot, you have to buy a seat. So, while I don't usually ride the Nebuta boats, I can see the fireworks from all the streets mentioned above. I never knew a Japanese summer festival, the Nebuta Festival, would be this fun. I want to buy some clothes and participate next time.

(Translated by Google) The size of the Nebuta is a sight to behold, but it is a festival that is not a religious ceremony, and if it rains you will have a hard time even with paid seats. The dancers do not seem to have a sense of unity, but each one seems to be having fun, while the spectators are left behind, so it is best to participate with this in mind.

A-FACTORY is a bustling shopping complex located near Aomori Station, offering a wide array of locally produced goods and delectable treats. The facility boasts an impressive selection of apple-themed products, reflecting Aomori's status as Japan's top apple producer. Visitors can explore the souvenir market featuring an assortment of items and indulge in culinary delights from various food vendors and a restaurant.
This is purposely built for tourist but make no mistake that the produce this place offers is all locally made items thatnouts Aomori on the map. There’s fast food, desserts and a sit down restaurant upstairs, be careful though, once a cruise ship docks there will heaps of tourist flocked to here to taste of what Japan and Aomori has on offer and believe me when I say all the ice confectionery is to die for. Must try the apple ice cream! Great place to stock up on Aomori souvenirs and gifts alike. Cash and card are accepted here.

I had a very pleasant experience shopping here. Lots of local goods that make for great souvenirs, including cute bottled jams, snacks, and sake. Foreigners can get tax-free here, and they also help you arrange for shipping back to Tokyo, which was what I did. I would like to commend an employee, 猪股さん, who was super patient and helpful despite the language barrier. Always maintained a smile throughout as she tried to guide me through the process for arranging shipping. Thank you and I will definitely recommend this place to anyone who visits Aomori!

This is a great place for any tourist visiting Aomori. Outside the building, there're great views of the Aomori Bay Bridge, Hakkoda Maru memorial ship, Aomori sign and skyline of the city. Inside the building, you'll find anything Aomori, souvenirs, yummy apple desserts and Gelato, apple cider tasting (800¥ for 4 sips), coffee, and varieties of apples. There's even a chart of the sweetness levels of each. Ocean's Diner offers "Not Fast Food" burgers, from Apple burger to Hakkoda Wagyu cheese burger. Note that they take a break from 3-4pm. For the cider tasting, go to 2F and purchase the card at Galleteria da Sasino then use it to choose the ciders from the venerated dispenser machines. We came here twice, and the day that Holland America cruise ship docked at the port, this place is a lot busier. If you purchase more than 6000¥, you could take advantage of duty free shopping and the friendly staff will put all your purchased items in a sealed bag. Aomori is such a charming city.

One of the famous produce of Aomori is apple. A Factory sells all kinds of apple products. You can find cakes, snacks and sweets, jams and ciders made of apples. There are also many sourvenirs you can find. They also offer a tasting bar for the apple ciders. It's also a good rest stop with food, coffee and gelato. Nicely located next to the Nebuta museum and the waterline, provide for a nice respite.

Transportation
Hakkōda Ropeway Sanroku Station is the starting point for a gondola ride that ascends a forested peak, offering stunning views of the Hakkoda Mountain Range. The 2.5km journey climbs 650m up Mount Tamoyachi, providing panoramic vistas of Aomori city, Mutsu Bay, Tsugaru Peninsula, Shimokita Peninsula and Mount Iwaki on clear days.
This is an introduction to the ski trails that descend from the top of the mountain via the Hakkoda cable car (gondla). There are two trails from the summit on the ropeway: the Forest Trail and the Direct Trail. The boundaries of both trails are marked with banboo poles, so you don't need avalanche gear as long as you ski through them. However, if you cannot resist the temptation to ski outside the poles, should have them and do so at your own risk. Superb views, fantastic snow quality, exhilaration and openness. The best ski runs you won't experience anywhere else. One of the best snow resorts, except for the windy days and frequent gondola cancellations.
Shige S — Google review
Lots of tourists arriving in buses, and the queue to use the Ropeway is long. I arrived in the morning and had to wait 1 hour to use the Ropeway after buying the ticket. The views on the way up are amazing as the gondola slowly goes up. The views from the top are amazing, especially the autumn colours when I visited. There are multiple hiking trails at the top that range from 30 mins to hours. Each trail will offer stunning views.

Came expecting vibrant autumn leaves and left with beautiful snow-capped memories The Ropeway in Aomori is an absolute must-do. It boasts an awesome and unforgettable view and runs with a highly efficient management system, handling the large volume of tourists with ease. The staff were very active and helpful, ensuring a great atmosphere. The most surprising part of my visit (on October 24, 2025) was expecting autumn leaves but being treated to a beautiful, unexpected blanket of early season snow! It made for a very unique and memorable experience.

Visited 25th October during autumn colours, and it was really pretty! The gondola ran every 15 mins when I visited, and the ride was pretty packed on both ways. Once you're up there's 2 routes you can hike, 30 min route and an hour route. When I went the route was already covered by thin cover of ice making it slippery at points so it took us longer. Best to have proper clothing and shoes if hiking, but also saw other groups just taking pictures close to the ropeway then taking the next one down. The round trip cost 2000 yen pp, and there's free parking on site.

Hakkōda Mountains, a group of stratovolcanoes and lava domes, offer a range of activities such as skiing, hiking, and hot springs. Visitors can also enjoy an aerial cable car ride to take in the breathtaking views. The area is home to a Scandinavian-style resort hotel nestled amidst primeval Japanese beech forests. The scenic beauty of Hakkoda changes with the seasons, offering stunning autumn colors and starry night skies that soothe both body and mind.
I used to travel to Hakkoda every winter when I lived in Japan. Probably here you can find the smoothest snow powder in the world. Really fun to go down in the wild of Hakkoda. You need to know there was once severe training session by Japanese military having left a lot of dead bodies. The beautiful great wild is not only attractive but also dangerous to those who love being in nature.

We only went around at the lower part of the Hakkoda mountain and yet it was already really beautiful. Luckily this part has already had some autumn colours while the rest of Aomori is still very green. Would love to spend more time here without the kids.

This is my ultimate zen spot! Whenever I'm in Aomori, you can bet I'll be heading straight there. The powder for snowboarding is simply unbeatable, and the mountains themselves are breathtaking. Just a heads up though, keep an eye out for the occasional wild black bears and the unpredictable blizzards. Other than that, it's pure bliss up there!

Museums
The Seikan Train Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkōda-maru is a museum located in Aomori, Japan, showcasing the history and culture of ferry transportation between Honshu and Hokkaido. Before the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988, ferries were the primary mode of travel between these islands. The Hakkōda-maru ferry operated for 80 years, carrying approximately 160 million passengers between Aomori and Hakodate.
Very interesting museum, amazing to see inside the entire ferry, great reproductions of different eras, you can see the deck, engine rooms, trains inside the lower holds. Really educational experience and exhibits. You might want to use the translation apps as many signs are Japanese only, but worth it.
Alexandra — Google review
The fact that it’s a ferry that used to carry train cars is pretty neat. However, beyond the vehicle deck, most of the exhibits are less interesting and can be skipped.
Robert E — Google review
Interesting museum of the history of the ferry and the train. I wish they would have more details about the process of loading the train onto the ferry. How long that took and a model or something doing a demonstration. Definitely worth your time.
Lawrence G — Google review
This ship demonstrates the real history for developing Hokkaido area in the past century. The big ferry loads the train and all sorts of supplies from Japan mainland across the straight to Hakodate. This is probably the most educational museum on our trip. The captain's deck is very fun to play for young kids. Almost the whole ship is open for tour. A former voyage ship at Aomori Port converted into a maritime museum. Exhibits were well maintained and the ship deck offers access to a nice view of Mutsu Bay.

This museum is truly wonderful and shows the history before the tunnel. You can explore the ship deck, control room, train car and engine rooms among other places. The entrance fee is 510 yen! (2023 Oct)

GREAT museum, enough English translations to feel like you still got a strong understanding of the museum. Hands on play on the bridge and great exhibits all throughout!

I love stepping into history. This boat was very interesting. Not a lot of English, but using google translate is simple. Makes me thankful for the underwater railway and the shinkansen!

Aquarium Asamushi

Mentioned on
1 list
Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Asamushi Aquarium, also known as Aquarium Asamushi, is a popular attraction located in Aomori, Japan. The aquarium features a stunning tunnel tank that replicates the underwater environment of Mutsu Bay, providing visitors with an immersive experience. With 390 tons of water and a length of 15 meters, the tank allows guests to observe marine life such as scallops and horse mackerel up close.
A little smaller than I’m used to, but the attractions are super nice. Multiple species of seals, they have penguins and the animal they are most famous for are their dolphins. The dolphin shows are marketed towards children, but the feats these dolphins perform can most definitely be enjoyed by all ages.
William L — Google review
Date of enjoyment: 18/4/25 Came here on a rainy Friday, there weren’t much people during opening but by the time the dolphin show started at 10am it was 70% full seating. There were heaps of aquatic life that’s native to Japan and Aomori, some of the jelly fish and deep sea fish are something you can only find here and their lighting and background setup is really good for photo taking, I spent heaps of time taking photos of the exotic fish’s behaviours. There’s something for both adults and the kids especially the dolphin is a must see, though in Japanese only you can make out what they are doing and the animals are amazing at performing tricks. There’s even an area to interact with crabs and creatures alike. There’s also a canteen here and a decent souvenir shop which takes card and cash. You can spend up to 2 hrs here.
Jay C — Google review
Had a great time at Asamushi Aquarium. We went to the Aquarium on the Weekend and it was not busy. The animals look very happy and well taken care off. They do a show every 1.5 hours and it's amazing. Really recommend going when you are visiting Aomori.

Very cute aquarium, spend around 3h here. Loved the dolphin show! Also bought a pearl necklace, were I extracted the pearl from an oyster, weird but fun experience!
Sarah C — Google review
This is the best close up aquarium that I have ever been to. So many displays put you right up face to gill with marine life. Very few foreigners to be seen. One note, your IC card from the city does not work on this train line. You must purchase separate tickets one way or round trip from Aomori station. The aquarium is a short 12 minute walk from Ashamushi Onsen Station. Just follow the signs along the road.
Joe M — Google review
Worth the trip even though is a small aquarium. We enjoyed the dolphin show, very interactive with the dolphins.
Carolyn H — Google review
The staff here were excellent and extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommend going here even though it is really far away. The dolphins show was excellent. You can also go down stairs and pat them.
Ryan P — Google review
Had a really great time here. The aquarium has a great range of aquatic animals of all kinds, from all places ranging from the seas around Japan to streams the mountainous regions. The dolphin show was very entertaining with them performing many tricks, including "playing volleyball" with the audience. However, some exhibits look too small for the animals in them, particularly the seals and the sea turtles. One of the seals also seemed to be sick when we visited, and we saw it vomit. Hope it's just indigestion though. Overall, great place to bring kids to and a good day trip out of Aomori!

Japanese restaurant
Osanai Shokudō is a humble family-style restaurant in Aomori, known for its top-quality grilled meat, fish, sashimi, ramen, and soba noodles. The restaurant offers a casual dining experience with simple yet delicious dishes. Guests can enjoy fresh and flavorful hotate (scallop) sets that are highly praised for their exceptional taste and texture.
Definitely a place to go when in Aomori. Food is very reasonably priced and so affordable, best of all it tastes delicious. They have a wide selection and scallops seem to be favorite among the customers. We kept ordering and our total bill was below ¥4,000 for 2 of us and we really had a lot and actually wanted more if we could. Highly recommend a place to go

It serves the best food in Aomori. I keep thinking about the food I had on that day even thought I am already back to Taiwan. Highly recommend everyone try it. The waiting line might be long, but it is definitely worthy your time. I will visit it when I go there. Enjoy it.

Really cool little mom and pop joint serving good food with a kind smile. I decided to try it after seeing the long lines the day before and although I can’t say I’d go back, I will say the employees’ kindness made me glad I went. The gyoza was very good and the scallops just okay. Reasonably priced and friendly so worth giving it a shot.

Saw the long queues while passing by a number of times and finally decided to give it a try. While there was quite a long queue when we visited around 5.45 on a Friday night, the queue did move quite fast. I ordered the grilled scallop and raw scallop set, while my gf had the other grilled scallop set. The scallops were well cooked and had just the right texture, while the sashimi was sweet if somewhat small. The only downside would be that the portion wasn’t very filling - probably better to add a third side dish for a filling meal. Overall, still a good experience and worth the queue.

The miso scallop is special and delicious, is is cooked with egg, green onion and mushrooms. I have added the codfish ovary, it taste like boiled bovine bone marrow with some fishy taste, new to me but not my pick. Cash only, started to line up after 4pm

No-nonsense seafood joint opposite Aomori Station. Narrow, old-fashioned space with nonetheless a decent number of tables, with two-seater tables for solo diners. Had the sea urchin and scallop rice bowl, which made for a light, refreshing lunch. Service is warm and efficient. Already pretty busy before noon on a weekday. Line starts to form outside at noon.

Ippachi Sushi

Sushi restaurant
Ippachi Sushi is a must-visit restaurant in Aomori, offering top-notch sushi with very good seafood quality at a better price compared to big cities like Tokyo or Osaka. The staff is warm and friendly, and they provide an English menu for international guests. The sushi features thick cuts of fresh fish, with outstanding chutoro and scallops. While the hoki may not be as impressive, the overall value for the price is great.
The best Sushi & Sashimi I ever have in restaurant out side Tokyo . Very good quality and quantity . I will come back again for sure.

Just finished dinner at Ichihachi Sushi in Aomori. 💴 A bit pricier than most meals we’ve had, but 100% worth it. During the last 6 weeks had sushi in 6 other cities and more than 15-20 times. Fresh, rich flavors and some of the best nigiri we’ve had in Japan. 🍣🍶

- We took about 15-20 minutes to get seats. - Chefs took more than 20 minutes per dish to prepare 😒, so better order everything you want since the beginning. - Famous sushi restaurant (since lots of people waiting in lines)

A delightful sushi restaurant in downtown Aomori. The food was fresh and plentiful, the menu featured lots of local specialities and the service was commendable. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there and we will definitely call in again the next time we are in Aomori.

I went to this sushi restaurant twice during my trip in Aomori. (And will definitely go again next time). The seafood quality was very good. Price was far better than those sushi restaurants in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka. Better still, staffs were very warm and friendly. They have English menu too and I saw a big group of western guests having their good time there.
Ai-Lin K — Google review
The absolute best sushi I’ve ever had in my life. The rice, seaweed, and fish were all extremely fresh, and our waitress was very kind and patient with us, especially with the language barrier. We had fatty tuna and green onion rolls, dried gourd shaving rolls, maguro nigiri, cucumber rolls, and the soy bean roll. I will probably be thinking about this place for the rest of my life. The place was mostly locals, a testament to how delicious this place really is. We had about a 15 minute wait, but I would wait triple this to eat here!

Loved it! Sushi and sashimi was definitely towards the premium side, price was reasonable. Just need to make booking in advance otherwise try visiting a bit later. Also ask them for the full menu instead of the English translated one, I think there’re more options there

Aomori Gyosai Center, also known as Nokkedon, is a vibrant spot that seafood lovers should not miss when visiting Aomori. This market and restaurant highlight the finest selection of seafood from Japan's local waters. With over 30 vendors to choose from, visitors can create their own rice bowls with various fresh seafood toppings. The lively atmosphere adds to the experience as guests can customize their meals according to their preferences.
The Aomori Gyosai Center is more than just a market; it's a fun and unique dining experience in Aomori where you can taste fresh seafood exactly the way you want it. It is an absolute must-visit!
Chatchamon I — Google review
Didn’t get to try this as it was already late in the afternoon, this is the original Nokkedon, where you purchase tickets and exchange them for fresh seafood to make your own seafood rice bowls. There’s an eating areas all over the market and you will get to choose your favourite seafood from various stalls. There’s scallops, salmon that’s fresh and wild, not farmed, hon maguro and various white fishes.
Jay C — Google review
We stumbled into this fish market while exploring Aomori city, and it's such a gem. Beside being a regular fish market, you could grab a bowl of Nokkedon: fresh Sashimi on top of steamed rice. The way it works is, you go to the ticket counter and pay 2200 yen for tickets you could then use to purchase the food you like. First step is to pick up a bowl of rice for 1 ticket, then you go from stall to stall and pick the fish you like, the number of tickets range from 1 to 3. There's a vending machine that dispenses free cold hojicha in a paper cup. The table provides free condiments such as your soy sauce and wasabi. If you prefer soft drink instead of tea, you could buy from the ticket counter. Such a fun experience, love it.
Carl W — Google review
Highly recommended! Everything is fresh and reasonably priced, with lots of options you can customize yourself. For 2,000 yen, you get 12 coupons—small rice bowls cost 1 coupon, and large ones cost 2. Items like hotate, tuna, salmon, and ikura range from 1 to 3 coupons depending on the type. If you don’t eat raw food, they also offer stir-fried and fried dishes.
PLOYPICHCHA A — Google review
This seafood market operates on coupons. Each coupon is worth 190 yen. Some items like rice, miso soup and sashimi are one coupon. Other premium items like scallops and oysters are 2-3 coupons. My husband and I got 12 coupons for the two of us. For 6 coupons, I was able to get rice, prawn, salmon, tuna, fish roe and some shellfish. See attached photo. The food was pretty fresh and it was a decent portion size. It was a nice experience. I would go again.
Catherine C — Google review
A tourist spot offering Nokke-don, where you can customize your rice bowl with seafood toppings. Many shops inside sell similar items, and the overall vibe is more ordinary than I expected. Still, it’s a good experience, though a bit on the pricey side.

Nagao Chuka Soba Aomori Ekimae

$$$$affordable
Ramen restaurant
Breakfast restaurant
Nagao Chuka-Soba Aomori Ekimae is a popular ramen restaurant located just a 3-minute walk from Aomori station. It's known for its unique Niboshi ramen, featuring a thick and fragrant fish broth that sets it apart from the usual shoyu or tonkotsu-based ramen. The restaurant has limited seating for about 8-10 people, so there may be a queue outside during busy times.
First time having niboshi ramen. I’m a fan of nagi ramen and heard that they predominantly serves niboshi ramen in Japan. Curious, I decided to make it my mission to try niboshi in its place of origins. It’s delicious and I had it twice. Extremely savory and umami, try the strongest version with handmade noodles. I’ll get some packets home with me 😋😋

I didn't wear a coat when I came out of the hotel. I saw that this restaurant had a good rating. After walking for a while, I was outside the station. The ground was covered with snow. My wife and I walked to the door of the store, and there were two seats in it. At first, the shopkeeper said he could sit down. My husband ordered outside the door (the menu price was different from the official website and there was no picture). After a good order, there was a seat. It was sat down by other people. The shopkeeper actually asked me to wait outside the door, even if there was another seat in the store. I can't accept such unreasonable behavior. If the noodles you make are delicious, but your attitude determines that you are a very rude person! There shouldn't be such a store in Aomori!
Cissnei C — Google review
This shop was near Aomori station so its easy to spot! Great kinda retro vibe! Reminiscent of Ichiran Ramen (or did Ichiran get their gig from this?) where you sit down a countertop seat, and your order will come through the window in front of you. Great Ramen broth! I had the 津軽ラーメン "こく煮干し". The soup was not too salty and had a sweet taste to it. It was light and refreshing! They also have options for what kind of noodles you'd like for your bowl so that's nice!
TIMOTHY S — Google review
The shop is right beside Aomori station so it's really convenient and easy to spot. The niboshi ramen, made using sardine broth, was extremely flavorful and the noodles had a good texture. The store layout can be a little cramped with little walking space so it's not recommended to bring your luggage and bags inside.
Valkyriefrost — Google review
The service, price, quantity was good but I personally wasn’t a big fan of the Niboshi ramen. Rice was unlimited, and you could buy extra toppings for the rice. It’s worth trying it out once since it’s one of the specialities of Aomori.

All I tried were great - Love the corn tempura - sweet corn with thin batter fried just right. The sweetness goes well with the salt provided. The freshness of 5 kinds assorted Sashimi is worth it. The homemade egg custard has a tinge of sweetness from the ginkgo nut. It’s smooth and light. The deep-fried chicken was piping hot and again the batter was thin and not over-powering. Enjoyed the food and would want to come back.

Imagine going to a restaurant called “sushi restaurant” and not getting sushi… well that’s what I did and I still really enjoyed eating at Asuka! It was easy to order through a tablet with multiple languages supported (jp, en, cn, kr). I had the chawanmushi (homemade egg custard) which was full of flavor from other ingredients like mushrooms and something that was slightly sweet, the corn tempura which was perfectly crispy on the outside yet the corn was still plump and flavorful on the inside, and the karaage which was not quite as crispy outside but the chicken was incredibly juicy and tender and the seasoning was amazing. Both water and hot tea are offered for free as well. Prices are also very reasonable, as those 3 items costed me less than 1500 yen! It was full of Japanese patrons and I was actually recommended to eat here by a local resident earlier, so it definitely lived up to its reputation.

Very good sushi. Fresh. Good taste. Probably one of the best sushi in town. Chefs have good preparation skills. Closes at 9.30pm. Popular. We arrived at 7.50pm and put our name on the wait list as they were full. We waiting around 10 mins before being shown to a table at the bar. Order sushi at table using electronic screen on table. They have bar seating around the chefs working which is very popular place to sit, and they also some rooms in the back of the restuarant. We ordered a variety of different sushi. Unfortuately many of the popular and special sushi were sold out already, probably as we were one of the later diners. They also ran out of steamed egg. Alcoholic drinks available. We stayed until 9pm. We spent around JPY10k for the 2 of us. Very good

Tsugaru Joppari Isariya Sakaba

$$$$affordable
Japanese regional restaurant
Tsugaru Joppari Ryoya Sakaba is a cozy and authentic izakaya in Aomori, offering a great ambience and local Aomori food. The entrance may be a bit tricky to find, but once inside, the layout and atmosphere are impressive. While the table charge is slightly higher than average, it's justified by the quality snacks provided.
I loved the atmosphere. If you sit at the counter, you will be at the front row of a shamisen live performance at 7pm. Highly recommend it if you want to immerse yourself in the vibrant Japanese culture. The food is also good, and you will be able to taste Aomori specialties there.

We made a reservation and went there for the shamisen session but our seat was unlucky - we couldn't see much from our table. I don't know if it's even possible but it might be good to tell them where you want to be seated when making a reservation. Food wise, sashimi was amazing!
Amelia E — Google review
Great ambience, and is highly recommended if you want authentic local Aomori food. The entrance was a little tricky as it was a small door which took a few seconds to work it out and the moment we were in we were amazed with the layout. The table charge (otoshi) is a bit more expensive than average (charged 1000yen) but that is because they provide quality snack/sides so I would say definitely worth it for the experience. The food was amazing, highly recommend.

Was lucky to get 2 seats walk-in at 6pm-ish. The staff once arranged seats started lighting a mini pot of pork in front of each of us and gave us 2 small cold appetizers plus an egg to dip the pork in. So interesting that they got such variety of appetizers right at the start. We ordered rice, since the pork went v well with a staple plus whipped egg. We ordered grilled chicken thigh on an iron plate, quite peppery and good to pair with sake and liquors. Their signature grilled scallop miso was nice but not a must-try to me, esp when the scallops were cut into tiny pieces and the flavor a bit masked by eggs and miso. The fish soup was mentioned on the menu to be made by cod bones and head/collar, but the one we got actually made by salmon? But portion-wise and flavor-wise, got nothing to complain about. Just would be nice to specify, i bet. They got 三味線 live performance at 7pm, and it was played by a well-seasoned musician lady. Couldn't understand what she said in japanese, but could feel the emotion she put into each song, particularly like one that's kindly a sad medley, or so i guessed... When some pause between notes added an extra touch. Recording or photos are not permitted during the performance, but i think it's cool, cos then patrons can focus on the music. And the staff gives you homemade crispy senbai before you leave, and also sends you off with a traditional act of rubbing flints together around you. With the translation from a nice lady who was waiting for seats, it means for good luck and you return home safely, how sweet!

Izakaya (horse sashimi, miso paste, crab korroke, Kani miso, Senbei-jiru, Clam Soup, Tori Karaage, Grilled Ika). Got lucky when this hole in a wall izakaya accepted our group to squeeze in a table meant for 4. We had so much food and also tried the horse sashimi. The senbei-jiru (rice cracker hotpot) is another specialty of Aomori which doesn’t really excite me. The scorched miso paste is interesting but not for those who are cautious about their salt intake. There was even a live music instrument performance to entertain us midway into our meals. Definitely recommend this really cool izakaya.
Peter L — Google review
Great ambience with great food. The interior of the restaurant is very interesting, the owner incorporated the Nebuta theme and food quality was good. They also serve a variety of sake from the region with a pinch of rock salt grinded right in front of you. We ended up paying more than 10,000 yen for our dinner, slightly pricier than other local restaurants but it was worth it.
Niki N — Google review
It is a izakaya (bar) in Aomori. Everyone stayed in for meal have to order a wine. It means this bar need a minimum order. They will put the glass in a woody cup (I think it is a traditional Japanese cup) and pour wine to "totally" full. The surplus wine will flow in the woody cup (see picture). Total process of pouring wine thinks polity to the customers. The inner decoration is special and panache for taking picture. However, I think the quality of the sashimi is not good (I felt some fishy smell to the scallop), which is not compatible with the cost. I think the quality of seafood in Hokkaido is better than Aomori

Super cool place, totally out of expectation from entrance to dishes. Make sure to try out their Buta which is pork, in the first pic. It is the best broiled pork I’ve ever had. But I do have to say they don’t offer the best/ most friendly service, especially in Japan where every restaurant can make you feel so welcome. No one greeted us at door, the staff make me feel you can take it or leave. I would say it was rather “local” experience. Plus my friend and I had to go to the toilet that night, maybe the food was not fresh.

Ringo-bako is a must-visit dining spot in Aomori, offering a unique and fun experience. The tables are crafted from wooden apple crates stacked on top of each other, creating a surprisingly comfortable dining setting. It's recommended to pair your meal with some Japanese fare at an izakaya like Izakaya Fukuro or Ringobako for a lively atmosphere. Great experience! A really great place to bring people visiting Aomori. This is a very cozy izakaya with great food and live traditional music. I recommend the tuna bowl. Huge pieces of fish and very fresh. They also have great beer and you can request a half and half and mix the beers on tap.

Great food, and even more amazing service! Hirao greeted myself and my husband as it is our first time to Aomori with a sake tasting of one of the best sakes we’ve been able to try. We were so incredibly impressed we asked if we could buy some in a local liquor shop. Hirao printed us a map and even walked us to the street to point us in the right direction. On top of that he gave us his business card in case we had any trouble. Best customer service I’ve experienced in Japan by far!

I came there to listen to shamisen because they have live shamisen performances. When I said that is why I came and asked if it was over already, the waiter just nodded. I speak Japanese so he could have replied more. I then asked if the performance would take place tomorrow too at the same time? (7pm). He just nodded again. With this poor service, I didn't feel welcome at all. Especially since there are other places in town that have shamisen performances.

A simple place for people seeking for pure gourmet. I had breakfast there and I could tell most people were regular customers. Friendly customers helped me out with the ordering as they identified I was not local. The chef was also kind enough to serve me. The ramen is simple, but very hearty. It just gives you a soft start for a day. I can see this type of shop is no longer popular among the younger generation. I sincerely hope more people come to support the little local business.

When you think of ramen, this is the flavor; it's a bowl that brings back memories of the first time you had it at a ramen shop. This restaurant has many fans who return in search of this nostalgic flavor. After savoring the nostalgic flavor and finishing the soup, it was a satisfying bowl that left me full. The multi-level parking lot is a blessing. Coffee Marron

$$$$affordable
Coffee shop
Breakfast restaurant
Coffee Marron is a charming retro-style coffee shop located near the Daiwa Roynet Hotel in Aomori. The cozy atmosphere is filled with local antiques and memorabilia, creating a unique ambiance for visitors. The menu offers a variety of options including sandwiches, curries, pasta, and freshly roasted coffee and tea.
Quirky place but still cozy and quite comfortable. Good food and good coffee!! They do have an english menu if you want it. It feels like a mix of old style western tea house/vintage americana. The seats are cozy and comfortable but are lower than i expected. I had the curry and a coffee on my first visit and the mix sandwich with coffee for my second. I loved them both. The place was full both times but I was seated rather quickly both times. The place is on the second floor but you cant really miss the building.

So. This simple but fabulous breakfast shop has a drink. Toast and eggs set menu that was ABSOLUTELY OISHII! Do spend the extra 100 yen for the "thick" milk toast. Your choice of toppings for the toast and includes a medium hard boiled egg. If you are in Aomori you must have breakfast here. Background music is soft jazz. Interior decor is cool and quirky with antique clocks, glassware, signs and lamps.
Lee D — Google review
I was struggling to find a decent coffee shop and using Google Maps I located Coffee Marron. It's on level 1 and the entry is unassuming with a steep climb up the narrow staircase to the cafe - well worth the effort! It was very compact but it exceeded our expectations. The coffee was good, the service was excellent and the decor was amazing. Congratulations to the owners on creating such an interesting "cafe".

Love the atmosphere for breakfast. Some actually come here to read a book. The place is Decorated with lots of antique, with air conditioning. Food is up to expectation, sausage is very good. Coffee is strong and good, toast in the breakfast set is decent.

This cafe serves one of the best coffee and breakfast in Aomori. I liked it so much that I went there twice for breakfast during my stay. On the last day of my trip, I stopped by for a takeout coffee, and the staff surprised me with two pieces of chocolate to go with it. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff are friendly and polite. I’ll definitely come back next time I visit Aomori.

Beautiful coffee spot. As an American it was really lovely! Staff was helpful even with the language barrier. It’s not in the most public space so walking to it is preferred. If you are looking for a warm welcome and simply delicious food, I highly recommend!

Dark roast but rounded and bold coffee. Really enjoyed the setting and the Showa era music too!! The interior was climatized perfectly ensuring a smooth experience for all coffee drinkers Thank you for this unique experience

What an amazing place. Equally popular amongst the locals and tourists. We had Egg Sandwich, Keema Curry and Vegetable Sandwich. The Vegetable sandiwch specially stands out due to freshness of ingredients. Their staff is super friendly and warm. We visited 4 times during our stay. English menus is available.

Marukai Ramen

$$$$cheap
Ramen restaurant
Marukai Ramen is a popular spot known for its revamped and shiny appearance, while still maintaining the traditional ordering system. The menu is simple, offering only three items: small ramen, large ramen, and onigiri. The seafood shoyu style ramen with medium thick noodles is a favorite among customers. The soy sauce ramen comes in different sizes and features deliciously seasoned char siu and menma. Customers appreciate the affordable prices for generous portions of flavorful ramen.
It’s vary Harmony soup big size just 700 yen
Mad B — Google review
It is a very simple ramen restaurant. The thicker then usual noodles gave it a good chew. The soup is seafood based with shoyu as main flavor. The charsiu is tender and porky creating a contrast to the seafood flavor. All in all the flavors are well balanced and the big bowl is actually big.
Kyo K — Google review
I was expecting more taste in the ramen, literally didn't taste anything at all. The bowl was big though, good service and funny guy at the cash register and reasonable price. That's why I give it a one more star but unfortunately I am afraid that I will not eat in this place again due to no taste.
Leo L — Google review
Craving some ramen after spending 6 days of work here in Japan. Clean looking exterior with a cool looking sign on the outside. Very, very simple place. Only 3 items to order. Small ramen, LG ramen and onigiri. Seafood shoyu style ramen with medium thick noodles that are very slurpable. 3 thin slices of pork are really easy to eat, fresh green onions and menma was perfectly seasoned with a slight snap to it when eaten. At less than $5 U.S., it is a steal! I think they use a different kind of shoyu as the dispenser with the condiments shoyu was very tasty but not too salty. Hard to explain.

(Translated by Google) It was my first visit in about 20 years. The restaurant has been renovated, and is spacious with plenty of seating. It was full within 15 minutes of opening, but the turnover was fast and I was able to get a seat right away. There was a receptionist, so I ordered there and they took a ticket that looked like a bathing ticket. I decided to go for a large soy sauce ramen. It was quite a punchy portion. The slightly strong, tangy dried sardine soup was a perfect match with the chewy straight noodles. It's an addictive soup! At first I thought it might be a bit much, but it went down smoothly and I finished it all. It was very delicious 😋🍴💕 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I went there because it had good reviews, but it was my first time trying ramen. 🍜 It was cheap and fast, but they served about 7 or 8 customers who sat down after me, so I was put on hold. 💦 The noodles tasted like dried udon noodles, and the broth didn't really have a strong dried sardine flavor. It didn't suit my taste at all, and I was confused as to why it had such high ratings and so many customers! My companion had the same impression! Ramen tastes vary, I guess... The restaurant was nice and clean, but... I thought the 100 yen rice balls were a good deal!

Transportation in Aomori

Getting around Aomori can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Aomori Airport

Airport
International airport
Aomori Airport is a small but convenient airport in Aomori, Japan. It offers about a dozen flights daily, including multiple flights from Tokyo's Haneda Airport with Japan Airlines. Travelers can also opt for the JR Tohoku Shinkansen train or buses from Tokyo to Aomori. The airport features amenities such as souvenir shops, restaurants, and an observation deck on the 3rd floor with model airplanes and a 3D model of the airport area.
A small inland airport in the northeastern side of Japan, very efficient and is a very good spot to consider for connecting to the rest of the northeastern cities
Eian K — Google review
Japanese typical rural airport. Around 35 mins to Aomori city center. In 2019, it was renewed hence its clean and better than before but nothing unique. Very pity.
H I — Google review
Smaller airport than the international airports in Japan, very limited in what shops and food they offer however for its size, it’s very well catered for. There’s only one departure area and you can see all the planes taking off and land whilst having a very scenic mountain view in the background. If you’re driving into the airport to return a car you will have to pay a 220 yen toll for normal cars and it’s cash only so have that spare change ready.
Jay C — Google review
I used international terminal. It is a small area for everything. Security is very thorough but efficient. Smooth process. There is one aircraft arrives and departs one at the time. So it is not busy. There is a small duty free at holding area. If you wish to have a meal, it is better to have it before entering holding area.
Thanathip M — Google review
It’s a good local airport in Aomori. It’s good and not bad. There are some souvenirs shops and restaurants. You can kill time before your departure maybe. Looks modern and clean! Enjoy!

OMG, these regional airports are so bureaucratic and rigid and inflexible to a T!!! We are 4 people and our ticket allowed 2 x 23kg, 46 kg each person. But we had only 4 check in bags: 16, 18, 15 and 25kg each respectively. Average 18.5kg each and well below the max limit of 46kg per person. Our check in person insisted we must move 2kg from the bigger 25kg bag; to the other smaller bags which are full. We explained that our average was well below even 23 kg limit per person and most international airlines will be flexible enough to consider the average and allow the 25kg bag to go through as an exception. We either had to buy a new bag, carry the extra 2-3 kg weight with us or we were offered a brown paper (!!) bag and said we can put 2 kg in there and she will check in the paper bag for us!!! If we were max in weight, and 2kg over, I would have moved things around. But we were average 18.5kg of 46kg limit, and they are making us move 2 kg around 😱😱😱 JAL, you offer foreign tourists to explore regional Japan for free on domestic legs but pls up your game with your staff training and bring in some critical thinking and problem solving and flexible customer care!

In the evening of December 21, 2019, we, from Hong Kong, drove our rental car here to pick up our elder daughter who flew in from Fukuoka. Driving inside the Airport is subject to a cash toll of Yen 220. Arriving passengers can wait for pickup at the non-near lane ie not the taxi lane.

The Nebuta ceiling display is awesome! Only the disappointed point is that all passengers must through the toll road to access there.

Misawa Airport

Airport
Regional airport
This was such a cute and small airport. There is one baggage claim, one check in counter area and rental car all in one spot. This was a welcomed change of pace vs the gigantic airports we normally fly through.
Liz W — Google review
Misawa Airport may be small, but it delivers a solid experience with its efficiency, cleanliness, and friendly staff. Free Wi-Fi, short baggage wait times, and a touch of Japanese hospitality elevate it above its modest size. No frills, no flash—just a simple, well-run airport that gets the job done pleasantly. Full Version: Not every airport needs to be a sprawling metropolis of high-tech features and luxury lounges to leave a positive impression. Misawa Airport, a small but well-kept travel hub in Aomori Prefecture, is a prime example of how efficiency, cleanliness, and a touch of Japanese hospitality can make for a pleasant airport experience, even without all the bells and whistles. Let’s address the obvious: Misawa Airport is not trying to compete with Haneda, Incheon, or Singapore’s Changi. It’s a small airport, and it knows it. But in the spirit of Japan’s consistent commitment to quality, it makes the most of its scale. The check-in and security process are straightforward, baggage claim is refreshingly quick, and the staff are as courteous and helpful as one would expect in Japan. The airport offers free Wi-Fi, which is always a welcome feature, especially in smaller airports where connectivity can sometimes be overlooked. While the selection of shops and amenities is limited, there are still a few interesting photo opportunities within the terminal, giving the space a bit of personality. The cleanliness of the facilities is another highlight—something that Japan excels at across the board. Misawa Airport isn’t flashy, nor does it need to be. Instead, it delivers a simple, effective, and pleasant experience, free from unnecessary stress or inconvenience. There are, of course, areas where it could improve—perhaps a bit more variety in dining or shopping options—but considering its purpose and location, it does exactly what it needs to do. For those expecting grandeur, Misawa might feel underwhelming. But for travelers who appreciate efficiency and quiet competence over excessive opulence, this airport is a fine example of how even smaller transport hubs can deliver quality. If you go in with the right expectations, you’ll likely leave with a good impression, just as I did.

TAKADA coffee shop. Amazing Taste! I was excited to meet this wonderful Coffee and Sandwiches. Can you believe we are in Misawa airforce base?(not in Yoyogi) Takada san uses a good ingredients, and it’s obvious that the food is delicious, but other people can’t do that.
Anne O — Google review
The worst airport in Japan for services and facilities. No credit card lounge (only paid lounge), no airline lounge, no coffee shop. Only one restaurant (opens at very limited hours) and one shop. Observation deck needs a fee to get in for adults.
H I — Google review
This airport is small but functional good airport. There are small a souvenirs shop and a coffee shop. The staffs were friendly and helpful. Just located by the military airport. But you would be bored if you arrive here early before your flight. Enjoy your safe trips
Erine T — Google review
Idk why people are giving this place poor reviews. It’s a landing strip attached to a massive military installation in a very small city in rural Japan. No frills or thrills. A taxi to and from Sky Plaza (many hotels and restaurants in this area) cost me $8.45 each way. Unless you’re renting a car, this is your best option for getting around.
Christopher J — Google review
This is a very small airport with only one gate and one restaurant. A decent airport. The only thing that I found odd is that the observation deck is not free (where they usually are free to use in Japanese domestic airports).
Ben H — Google review
Even though it's a small domestic airport, you'll find a souvenir shop and a restaurant on the second floor.

Small airport with only one gate. Plenty of parking, and the car rental return point is right past the pick up / drop off area.

My review is mainly for the michi-no-eki here. The airport is very small and the parking is easy and free. It can be confusing to determine where to go for the michi-no-eki stamp, but it’s just in the main entrance walkway before you get to the check in counters, meaning you don’t need to go inside the airport for it.

(Translated by Google) This is a local airport with one boarding gate. It also serves as a roadside station, but the shop is smaller than a typical roadside station. They have the bare essentials, so you'll be able to get your souvenirs here in time. The Akita dog stuffed animals that are all over the airport are so cute. If you take the elevator to the third floor, you can go to the observation deck. There are no planes at all except when planes arrive. The building is made of wood and feels comfortable.

(Translated by Google) Revisited on May 26, 2025 I visited this airport for the first time in about 20 years since the ANA 50th anniversary project. Located in Kitaakita City, this is the least used airport in the Tohoku region. However, since it is far from Akita Airport and Aomori Airport, and also from the Akita Shinkansen, the only scheduled passenger service is Haneda Airport, which is a very valuable means of transportation to and from the Tokyo metropolitan area. Currently, ANA operates three round trips per day between Haneda Airport. It was probably different 20 years ago, but now it is also a roadside station. On the first floor of the terminal building, there is an ANA check-in counter and a checked baggage counter. The arrival floor is also on the first floor, and you will be greeted by a blue Namahage, which is different from the red Namahage at Akita Airport. Immediately after exiting the arrival exit, there is a general information desk and counters for rental car companies. The second floor is the departure floor, and in addition to the security checkpoint, there is an ANA FESTA and a restaurant. There is a rooftop observation deck on the third floor. You can go from the first to the second floor by stairs and escalators, but you need to use the elevator to reach the third floor. To access the airport, there is an airport shuttle bus that goes to Odate Station via Takanosu Station. This bus runs according to the schedule of flights, so if a flight is delayed, the bus will be delayed, and if a flight is canceled, the bus will be canceled. The runway extension direction is 11/29, and it has one runway of 2,000m x 45m. There are no parallel taxiways, so turning pads are installed on both ends of the runway. Since air traffic control is performed remotely from New Chitose Airport (New Chitose Airborne Control Center), there is no air traffic controller on site and no tower.
