Chuson-ji, a prominent Buddhist temple in Hiraizumi Town, was established in the early 12th century by Fujiwara no Kiyohira. It is considered a hub of Buddhist culture and houses the renowned Konjikido, the first structure designated as a Japanese national treasure. The Sankozo Museum within its grounds exhibits thousands of historical artifacts.
The museum and the hall that need ticket. If you are there and just walk around (plenty of things to see) you don’t have to pay the ticket. Anyway, the museum and the hall are worth the price you pay and please support the temple by purchasing the ticket. You can spend 1 hour easily here if not more. The temple ground is quite huge. The souvenir shop offer some good snack. There are samples. I tried and was hooked.
Julin L — Google review
A miniature, less crowded version of Kyoto when there there used to be significant trade between the two. The grounds are great to walk around - the big temple is free as are the shrines and the Noh stage (check schedule for performances). The golden hall and new museum require a ticket- well worth it!
Liz H — Google review
Nice preservation and restoration of the golden temple, which is housed inside and behind glasses. One can imagine its full of light and hope when it was first established. No photo inside the building and take the time to observe all the fine details.
Gus C — Google review
Beautiful location and the grounds are massive. The gold pavilion is a neat site to see (though photography is not allowed).
Josh D — Google review
Beautiful and historical place by Fujiwara family. It’s well-maintained. You can go around with a stroller from the parking lot, and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere with greenery. Konjikido is also excellent.
Yuko — Google review
8/Apr/2025; visited around 4pm closed to the closing time. Few rains; light people around the temple; so quite and peaceful moment. Ticket price 1000yen to view golden pavilion. I gave 4 stars coz no photo allowed both in museum and the gold pavilion; i think allow and ask for not using flash should be enough.
Antonio O — Google review
We came here hoping to see the autumn colors. There was just a tint of red. I am going to make this my yearly travel destination. It’s a jem among all shrines
Iva T — Google review
Beautiful nature walking to see the shrines. Calm and peaceful feeling. Walking up and round the area is free. Only go in to see the golden ji needs the ticket ¥1000 per person.

Motsuji Temple

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Motsuji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple located in Hiraizumi Town, surrounded by a vast garden, a rock-studded lake, and low hills. It is considered a significant symbol of Hiraizumi culture and was built with the aspiration for peace and prosperity by Fujiwara Kiyohira. The temple holds cultural performances like the Kawanishi Nenbutsu Kenbai dance and Gokusui no En, which recreates a Heian period poetry game.
Beautiful garden and temples. Borrowed scenery from the mountains makes for a breathtaking sight. Fall colors are currently on display. Some historical information signs are also in English.
Philip D — Google review
We visited the temple on Monday, just 30 minutes before closing. The ticket fee was 700 JPY per person, which felt a bit pricey for the experience. However, walking around the garden was peaceful and offered a calming atmosphere.
Sirimon W — Google review
A famous World Heritage garden representing the Pure Land of the late Heian period Motsuji Temple is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in the early Heian period. Its garan (temple buildings) were constructed in the later years of Fujiwara no Motohira, a powerful clan leader in the late Heian period, and during the reigns of the second and third lords, Motohira and Hidehira, it boasted such scale and splendor that it was described as "unparalleled in our country." According to the Kamakura period history book "Azuma Zei," at the end of the 12th century, Motsuji Temple had as many as 40 halls and pagodas and 500 monks' quarters. However, it suffered repeated disasters from the Kamakura period through the Muromachi period, and all of the buildings were burned down. The Pure Land garden and the remains of the temple complex from the Heian period have been preserved in almost perfect condition, retaining the beauty of the former garden. The world that unfolds around Ohara Pond, which covers an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, is the Pure Land itself. The area around the pond and the island in the middle are paved with pebbles, and the sandbar creates a beautiful coastline with its soft curves, the hills made of large and small stones create a cliffscape, and the remains of the pond are used to draw water. Enjoy this precious and famous garden that conveys the ideas and techniques of Sakuki, Japan's oldest garden design manual, to the present day. Among them, Dejima, which looks like a rough shore, is on the southeastern shore of the pond and is considered one of the most beautiful sights. You will be captivated by the mystical appearance of the two-meter-tall standing stones rising out of the water. The bush clover flowers in the temple grounds are usually at their best from late September, and the autumn leaves are at their best from late October to mid-November. Motsuji Temple (Hiraizumi Town, Nishii District, Iwate Prefecture) Opening hours: 8:30~17:00 (November 5, 2025 - March 4, 2026: 8:30 - 16:30) No closed days for worship Admission fee: 700 yen, high school students 400 yen, elementary and junior high school students 200 yen [Hagi Festival] Thursday, September 25th to Monday, October 20th, 2025 A dance performance of Ennen no Mai and a special viewing of the main hall will be held. Autumn Leaves Festival: October 26th (Sun) - November 15th (Sat), 2025 Performances of Ennen no Mai and other events are planned.

Beautiful scenery and not crowded. Can enjoy the calm environment and relax. I visited twice here in summer and winter.

This was really beautiful because we had just visited Chuson-Ji temple and it was only a short walk over to this Motsuji temple. Again remarkable simplicity and beautiful especially with the snow all around. It is a Buddhist temple and is known for its beautiful Phoenix Hall which did not disappoint. The Phoenix Hall is a wooden structure built in the Amida style, which is characterized by its simple and elegant design. The hall is decorated with intricate carvings and paintings, and its interior is home to a large statue of Amida Buddha. The temple was founded in 998 by Fujiwara no Michinaga, a powerful courtier and politician during the Heian period (794-1185).

A very beautiful and scenic Buddhist temple that is designated as an UNESCO cultural/heritage site. There is a also a very large garden with a footpath that accompanies the temple and its buildings, which are placed around a scenic lake. The walk around the lake offers very different views depending on where you are on the path. You can see sites of where temples used to stand (some were burnt down in wars, etc.) as well as the ones that still remain to this day. During the walk around the lake on the footpath, there is a large bell in a belfry, a gentle stream that empties into the lake, as well as a set of strategically-placed rocks and stones made to resemble a landscape. Most definitely worth the entrance fee. Very highly recommended!

A gorgeous temple with a sprawling garden with various temples surrounding the pond. I got the chance to go on a beautiful day with blue skies, and even mid-August, you could already see the changing colors of the momiji to a fiery maroonish color and a warm, pleasant ochre. From the garden, you could peek through and see views of the town and mountains. Overall, a beautiful temple with a rich history.
Kel-lam F — Google review
There are old temples and beautiful garden. In forth Sunday of May, "Gokusui no En" is held at this temple. It reminds an events for old Japanese Nobility. There is nothing to shield the sun so that you need a blind or sunshade in summer.

Nestled in the breathtaking cliffs of Hiraizumi, Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondō is a remarkable Buddhist temple that offers a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty. This ancient site, carved into the rock face over a millennium ago, serves as a tribute to Bishamonten, the deity of warriors. Visitors can explore its intricately designed wooden structures while soaking in stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
It's a pretty cool spot to visit but it's something that you'd add on. You can actually walk up the steps and go into the shrine, there's also incense and candles you can light for a few hundred yen. When I first heard of a shrine in a cave I had a very different idea in mind but if you look underneath, at the support, it goes surprisingly deep into the rock.

This temple was very majestic, especially the one partially constructed within the mountain wall. If you are day tripping around Ichinoseki, I highly suggest stopping by. Parking is available for free just out front. It only takes you about 30 minutes to view it all.
Kurt F — Google review
Had a great time exploring the grounds and taking some photos. It’s a small place, but full of wonderful little nooks and crannies to look in. There was a Buddha carved i to the cliff face and a priest chanting when I visited. It’s an awesome place to visit.
Hannah B — Google review
It was beautiful particularly in the fall foliage season in early Nov. There were not many tourists as we came in early morning. The entry fee is 300 Yen. There’s a carpark opposite to it and it’s free.

It's an interesting temple in a small but pretty garden. Honestly, rather disappointing. It looks like nothing special, and the interior is nothing to write home about, either. If you are by car, it may be worth your while to come here, but I would recommend you spend money on a taxi here and back.
Aleksander R — Google review
A rewarding location for taking photos on beautiful fall colors with traditional Buddhist temple backgrounds. The entrance fee is only 500 yens per person. Parking lot is right opposite to the temple and it’s free.
Ballchi C — Google review
A not-so-grand but still very beautiful shrine not to far from the more popular and crowded Hiraizumi area in Iwate Prefecture. The shrine is embedded into the natural rock wall, which intrudes into the interior of the shrine in a asthetically pleasing and beautiful way. The Bishamon deity is honored here and is an incredibly detailed and intricate statue. The small footpath/garden/lake outside is also very pretty and is a nice place to snap some pics during the right time of the day. Entrance fee is minimal, and a good-sized parking lot is available for free across the street if you come by car. Worth a look if you're in the area.
Shingo I — Google review
Pureland Buddhist Temple in the side of a mountain cave which was originally built in 801 AD. ☸️ Entry admission is affordable and there is also a relief of a Buddha carved into the side of the cliff there as well. While in Hiraizumi make sure you stop to see this often overlooked national historic wonder in vermillion and white. 🙏PLEASE 🙏 be respectful and observe that there is 🚫📸 *no photography inside* 🚫📸 the Temples as it is an active temple and a sacred space. 🙏 🙏🕊️🙏 @gabrielcraft.me

Kanjizaio-in Temple, located adjacent to Motsu-ji, is a restored medieval temple with landscaped gardens and a serene Maizuru ga Ike Pond. The temple was originally established by the wife of Fujiwara no Motohiko and features a picturesque Jodo Garden. The pond is surrounded by lush trees, offering visitors a unique experience at this national historic site. The garden showcases Pure Land ideals with rock arrangements and streams designed to resemble waterfalls.
I came here early in the morning before Motsuji's opening hours. It's quiet, calming and peaceful. Saw a couple of cranes and felt lucky.

Nex to the Motsujin temple, it is a very nice greenery park and during sakura season, there are quite a few amazing sakura trees near the pond. Makes for an excellent picnic or relaxing spot. Spent 30 minutes here staring at the sakura trees and forgetting about the hustle /bustle of life!

(Translated by Google) A historic park right next to Motsuji Temple. The remains of a temple built by Fujiwara no Motohira's wife. The garden here is simpler and more natural than Motsuji Temple. I wonder if the wife built a temple herself because her husband and she didn't have the same taste in gardens. My grandparents were the same, but gardening was usually a source of arguments. The Oshu Fujiwara clan was at the height of its prosperity at the time, so the wife could create a garden to her liking. Because it's a park, it doesn't feel like a World Heritage Site, so you can walk around casually.

(Translated by Google) I left the hotel at 5 a.m. and strolled around the Kanjizaiō-in ruins. Unfortunately, the weather was poor and I could only take some disappointing photos. I hope the weather will be fine if I visit again. The Kanjizaiō-in ruins are the remains of a temple built by the wife of Motohira, the second lord of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. A Pure Land garden with Maizuru Pond at its center spreads out in front of the remains of two Amida halls, one large and one small, and Mount Kinkei behind the temple grounds. By the early modern period, all of the original buildings and pagodas had been lost, and the garden fell into disrepair and was later turned into rice paddy. However, based on the results of archaeological excavations, the remains of the temple and the garden were restored and maintained, resulting in their current appearance. The World Heritage Committee highly praises the Kanjizaiō-in ruins, along with the remains of Mōtsu-ji Temple and Muryōko-in Temple, as assets "constructed as symbolic expressions of the Buddhist Pure Land (Pure Land) in this world."

I often visit Ichinoseki and Hiraizumi for work, but this was my first time here. The vast and beautiful Pure Land Garden, the well-maintained lawns, the serene Maizuru Pond, and the mysterious historical site on the border with Motsuji Temple—it doesn't seem like the perfect place for a Tyrannosaurus race, but Motsuji Temple also hosts cosplay events, so I enjoyed participating in the Tyrannosaurus Race. Of course, after the race, I enjoyed the various World Heritage sites. If they hold it again next year, I'd like to participate. Hiraizumi Station, located in the Tohoku region, holds the distinction of being the first world cultural heritage site in that area. It serves as a convenient starting point for visiting Chusonji Temple and other World Heritage Sites. The station offers various amenities such as a convenience store, souvenir shop, clean public seats and toilets, and ample coin lockers. Additionally, visitors can easily access transportation options like public buses and taxis from this station.
Hiraizumi Station is where to take the public bus going to Geibikei. A shop in the area sells souvenirs and used (antique-like) small earthenware, wind chimes and other items. And the prices are definitely cheaper than those found in tourist areas and shops. A convenience store can provide one with a quick bite in case one us hungry and running late to catch the bus. Public seats and public toilets are clean and conveniently located.

Bells echo from golden halls; lotus ponds reflect sky and soul. Hiraizumi is stillness incarnate — once a northern capital, now a world heritage whisper. The Tōhoku Main Line pauses reverently, carrying pilgrims in quiet awe. Tourist Tip: UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Chūson-ji and Mōtsū-ji Temples. One of Tōhoku’s spiritual hearts; ideal for a day trip or reflective walk.

Nowadays, historical sites have been excavated and the entire area has been developed as a park. In one corner of the historic site, the layout of the stables and central building group is clearly shown. You can also see the old sewage pit (toilet) and the remains of the garden pond and moat. A guidance center has been built in a place overlooking this historic site, and it is also a place you should definitely stop by to learn about Hiraizumi culture☺ There is also a roadside station in front of the guidance center. The only notable remains at Yanagi-no-Gosho are the moat and earthworks, reconstructed through excavation findings. The garden pond is currently dry, and no buildings remain. While this may leave you feeling a bit unsatisfied, if you use the exhibits at the adjacent Guidance Center to unleash your imagination, it's a fascinating site. This large site, located in Hiraizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture, is believed to be the former headquarters of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. Located in the center of Hiraizumi on a plateau facing the Kitakami River, it is highly likely to have been the Hiraizumi Palace where the second, second, and fourth lords of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, Motohira, through Yasuhira, conducted government affairs. Excavations since 1988 have attracted attention at this site, and within the vast grounds surrounded by earthworks and moats, the remains of numerous buildings, gardens, roads, and gates have been discovered. In particular, the large buildings arranged around a central plaza and the remains of a garden centered around a pond testify to the fact that Hiraizumi was a political and cultural center at the time. Excavated artifacts include high-quality ceramics, lacquerware, roofing tiles, and wooden products, indicating that this place was not just a residence, but a facility symbolizing the power of the Fujiwara clan. Yanaginogosho is the place where Kiyohira, the first generation of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, moved from Toyotadate, Esashi District (Oshu City) to Hiraizumi, Iwai District and set up his residence there, and the third generation, Hidehira, redeveloped it to use it as the government office and Hiraizumikan. It is said that Located to the southeast of Chuson-ji Temple, it was built so that the Golden Hall on the top of the mountain could be seen to the northwest from Yanaginogosho. In 1189, when it was attacked by Minamoto no Yoritomo's large army of over 280,000 people, Fujiwara Yasuhiro set himself on fire and it went up in flames. The name Yanagi no Gosho was given in later generations to compare with the name of Kara Gosho. ``Azuma Kagami'' states that they built a mansion north of Muryoko-in Temple and called it Hiraizumi-kan, and although there is no name for Yanagi no Gosho, there is a name for Yanagi no Gosho located 500 meters north of JR Hiraizumi Station. Therefore, it is now called Yanaginogosho after this name. It is located in the southeast of Takadate, about 25 meters above sea level, between the west bank of the Kitakami River and Nekoma, and as a result of excavation, the area of 112,000 square meters has many ruins of pillared buildings, a huge moat, Bridges, roads, garden ponds, ruins of mansions, over 10 tons of pottery, ceramics from China, pottery from Tokoname and Atsumi, eboshi from that time, the first Iwazen village stamp discovered in Japan, and shogi pieces were unearthed. I am doing it. These excavated items have been designated as nationally important cultural properties, ``Artifacts excavated from the Hiraizumi Ruins in Iwate Prefecture.'' They are identified as the Hiraizumi Palace mentioned in the historical book Azuma Kagami, and are thought to have been the seat of government affairs for the Oshu Fujiwara clan. The lowland on the southwest side is called Nekoma-ga-fuchi. Continued excavations have uncovered the remains of moats, gardens, ponds, post-hole buildings, latrines, and many other artifacts, including earthenware and ceramics that indicate exchanges with Kyoto and overseas. As a well-preserved ruin that indicates a political and administrative base that expanded into Japan's northern region, these ruins are particularly important among Hiraizumi's cultural heritage sites. Muryoko-in Ato is part of the Hiraizumi Temples, Gardens and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Pure Land, a World Heritage Site. It was built as a replica of the famous Byodo-in Temple in Kyoto but has since been destroyed, leaving only remnants of its foundation. The site still exudes a nostalgic atmosphere, offering a glimpse into its glorious past.

(Translated by Google) There used to be a 12th century temple here, called Muryokoin, that was built by Fujiwara Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, who ruled the Tohoku region around the end of the Heian period. The temple itself no longer exists, only the remains, and it seems that the state of the building at that time is unknown. However, after excavation of the remains, the scale and ancillary facilities (gardens, earthworks, etc.) at that time have been clarified to some extent, and what is visible above ground seems to be a reproduction of the pond garden at that time based on that investigation. Apparently, the pond is sometimes filled with water depending on the season, but there was no water when I visited in early spring. For this reason, at first glance it looked like just a flat area of grass. There is a signboard where you can read the explanation of the historical site, and there is no admission fee, so it is nice that it doesn't cost anything to see it. These are the remains of a temple built by Fujiwara Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. It was modeled after the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple in Uji, Kyoto, but excavations have revealed that it was larger than Byodoin Temple. Muryokoin Temple's complex was a Pure Land garden centered around the Amida Hall, with Mount Kinkei located behind it (to the west). This layout was calculated to allow visitors to experience the sight of the sun setting over the ridge of Mount Kinkei twice a year, in spring and autumn, as a Buddhist paradise. This unique expression of Hiraizumi's Pure Land philosophy, distinct from Byodoin Temple, has earned it international acclaim. After the fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, the temple was destroyed by repeated fires, and now only the remains of the pond, the island, and foundation stones remain. Located near the entrance to Chusonji Temple's parking lot, the restaurant is a souvenir shop on the first floor and a restaurant on the second floor. It was very cold that day, and I was actually thinking of going to another restaurant, but I decided to stop by this restaurant while adjusting my schedule to catch a highway bus to Sendai. I was attracted by Iwate specialties like Morioka Reimen and Wankosoba, but I ended up ordering the "Mochi & Soba Set (1,350 yen)" which included hot soba noodles and three types of mochi (zunda mochi, junen mochi, and ginger mochi). The hot soba noodles warmed me up, and I also got to try and compare the three types of mochi. The staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Although I didn't use the restaurant, there's a souvenir shop on the first floor, so it was a two-for-one deal. It has been quite a while since I last indulged in the delightful taste of soba noodles. The prospect of savoring a dish made from locally sourced ingredients alone was enough to get me excited. At Takamatsuan, they use Kuratsubo Kabu from Tono and Hanamaki buckwheat, which are meticulously ground in a traditional stone mill and carefully crafted into delicious soba noodles.
Try to be there within the first, at most second seating. If not, you’ll be waiting for over 2 hours to be sat. We happened to be first in queue after the first seating and still had to wait about an hour. The owner is the only worker there (or at least he was the only worker when we were there) so during peak hours, he will be swamped. To be considerate to the others in queue, we shared a table with another Japanese couple. Once seated and our orders were taken, the food came out relatively quick. Tempura was very nice. I don’t usually describe shrimps as juicy but this one was! As in, I bit off the tail and saw the meat almost bursting out of itself. Maybe I was hungry but that was one of the best shrimp tempuras I’ve ever had. Same with the almond tofu! It was almost like a custard and the kuromitsu was not too sweet. Overall a very good meal, especially if you can get there early:)

(Translated by Google) I arrived in Hiraizumi just before lunchtime and was on my way to Motsu-ji Temple. I was hungry and it was a bit hot, so I was craving some cold soba noodles, and this restaurant caught my eye. There was only one other customer there that day, but they were about to leave after paying the bill. It seems to be a famous restaurant, as there were many autographs of announcers and others displayed inside the restaurant. The owner who served me tea told me that this restaurant serves soba noodles seasoned with "Kuretsubo Kabu," a turnip featured in "Oishinbo Volume 32," so I ordered that. After waiting a few minutes, the dish arrived and I tried it. It's considered a substitute for wasabi and radish, and although it's a flavor I'd never tried before, it had a gentle spiciness that didn't overpower the aroma of the soba noodles, and was delicious. As it happened, there were no other customers there, so I chatted with the owner about Kuretsubo Kabu and where it comes from, and enjoyed a delicious and enjoyable lunch. By the time I left, about two other groups of customers had come in. Making soba noodles is hard work, but I hope you take care of your health and continue to make delicious soba noodles in good health forever. As the owner is the only one running the shop, you may have to wait quite a while if it's busy, so be aware of that, but it's a restaurant I'd like to visit again. (Translated by Google) It's a facility that combines a souvenir shop and a restaurant, as is common in tourist areas! So, we headed to Hiraizumi Rest House. The first floor is a large souvenir area, while the second floor is a dining area mainly for reservations. The second floor probably seats well over 200 people. I had a vegetarian lunch. The mountain vegetable soba noodles were delicious. Thank you for the meal. It came with various side dishes, the specialty zunda mochi and soba noodles with wild vegetables. The restaurant was bustling with groups of worshippers. Yumenokaze

$$$$affordable
Soba noodle shop
Japanese restaurant
When I visited Yumenokaze, a soba noodle shop in Chusonji, I was impressed by its nostalgic structure. Since the main shop was full, I was directed to the adjacent building. Intrigued by the fame of their Wanko soba with mochi, I ordered a set and was not disappointed. The mochi came in three delectable varieties that left me craving for more.
Very authentic local wanko soba noodles and Morioka specialty mochi with 6 different flavors. We're very pleased with our lunch!

Delicious mochi! With great hospitality from the owner. When it started raining she lent me an umbrella to continue my visit to Chuson-ji, and upon returning it was still raining, so her husband drove me to the station!

Tasted Matcha and Amazeke. Matcha and Amazeke were watery, which means less tasty. But, thanks to the hot drinks, we could keep warm. 550JPY for Matcha and 440 JPY for AMAZAKE.

Delicious mochi with various seasonings. Mochi has the right amount of chewiness with no raw flour taste and the seasonings complement well with the mochi. Recommended!

The city offers more than just a quick stopover, with its rich samurai history, resilience, harmony with nature, shopping and dining options, nightlife attractions, and walkable city center. The Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train connects Sendai to Tokyo Station and Shin-Aomori Station, making it easily accessible for travelers.
A small airport. Easy to navigate. Trains and buses to various destinations available. I took a direct bus from Zao Ski resort. Storage lockers are limited.

Excellent and speedy services in Japanese style. All the staffs are polite, properly dressed and in considerable attitude which you could completely feel while you saw their handling of the baggage. The airport is not as big as those busy airport but have all required amenities and shop.

Sendai Airport A compact airport where you hardly need to walk after passing through the security gate, as the departure gates are close by. The airport is directly connected to the train system, allowing you to reach Sendai Station in about 20 minutes. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes, so you can expect to get to Sendai Station within an hour. There is also an ANA-affiliated lounge available. December 2024.

A medium-sized international airport that forms the core of the Tohoku region. It is conveniently located, including access by train from the center of Sendai. Inside the airport, the Aero Subaru FA-200 single-engine aircraft, which was once produced by Subaru, is on display.

A nice and small airport. It is relatively to access from the Sendai Station to the airport by train (taking about 20~30 minutes of train). It is quite clean and bright. The stores here are quite nice and offers a variety of goods. The restaurants are also quite good with reasonable price. International and domestic flights are available.

Small but nice airport. There are gifts and snacks for sale inside and outside the security checks. It’s never been crowded the times I’ve been here. Today I got to see fun lights on the free rooftop observation deck. Check it out if you have a moment before going through the security checks. I’ve flown to and from this airport with Peach, Skymark, and ANA.

Akita Airport

Airport
International airport
Akita Airport is a convenient travel hub with multiple flights from Tokyo's Haneda Airport and Osaka's Itami Airport. The airport offers long-term parking at reasonable rates and free parking for those picking up passengers. Visitors can enjoy local products, including sake and beers, as well as regional cuisine at the two on-site restaurants. Foreign travelers from Asia can receive a free SIM card upon arrival, while bus services are available to Akita city.
My wife and I came here on Jan 17, 21 and 22. It’s a cosy airport especially on its departure floor with only one cafe where we had lunch on 21. While there is no train service, the public transportation is the Airport limousine. Its stop is just outside.

Typical rural airport. 50 mins to the city center. Good atmosphere with enough cafes and restaurants with great souvenir shop. The credit card lounge is very new and also good.

Very cool airport. Quite a lot of dog themes, which I loved! Staff at the information desk also helpful. I got on the limousine bus to Akita station, which you can tap on/tap off with your IC card (eg. Suica) or with cash when you get off the bus. It’s ¥1300 to the station.
Harrison L — Google review
It’s a typical local airport. Compacted one. But it’s renovated and modern. So I felt good! There are many good souvenirs and good restaurants. I love the Akita dog there!! Try to come!
Erine T — Google review
A very small but very lovable airport. Lots of little shops for souvenirs, fun decorations everywhere, and easy to understand signage. Overall a great place to start or end a journey, and I would not have anything bad to say if someone told me they were landing here.
Ethan M — Google review
Efficient service, a large area where local products are sold, a couple of restaurants, coffee shop and comfortable seating available.
Mahmoud R — Google review
Very nice small airport. There's a bus that departs after each flight that arrives at this airport. You can pay with pasmo travel card. About 1 hour to akita train station.
Wanstead W — Google review
A great little airport, especially for collecting visitors and flying out for a long time. They have long-term parking where you can leave your car for the duration of your trip for a reasonable fee. Online, it can be confusing to work out, but you can leave your car over 20 days, the fee just increases after twenty days. When parking to collect someone, the fee is free, which is great. You can also easily find the timetables for all flights, and because of its size, the airlines are understanding about coming in by bus and the bus timetables. Overall a nice airport. Though, they do have trouble landing with fog (ANA) and you can find your flight turned around at the last minute and sent back to Tokyo.

Iwate Hanamaki Airport

Airport
Regional airport
Visitor Centers
Iwate Hanamaki Airport, located in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, is the sole airport in the prefecture. Initially a military airfield, it opened to civilian flights in 1971. While relatively small, it offers flights primarily to Osaka, Nagoya, and Chitose. Direct flights to Tokyo are not available from this airport. The facility is conveniently situated near Shin Hanamaki Station and features a modern and clean building with ample parking space.
Hanamaki airport is a fairly small airport providing flights mainly to Osaka, nagoya, and chitose (I've only flown to chitose from here). You can't fly to Tokyo directly. Not crazy far from the center of the city and reasonably close to Shin Hanamaki Station. It's the only airport in the prefecture and it's a new clean building with quite a lot of parking spaces. It's not a huge airport, so it's easy to get around.

Used this airport for a flight to Hokkaido back in 2007. Parked my car for free in the huge parking lot, a machine issued my boarding pass and I was in Sapporo in less than two hours. Very smooth and hardly any crowds. Much more convenient than a lot of the train stations in this part of Japan!

Small but Practical Airport, I arrived from Hokkaido and conveniently stayed one block away from Sakurambo-higashine Station. The down side to this airport is the lack of connection to the nearest train station which is Jimmachi Station, so taxi is required to leave the airport (unless you reserve bus shuttle), taxi ride is short thou, so no mayor cost impact to your wallet :) Airport services were decent.
