Museum of the Big Bend

Museum
Children's museum
The Museum of the Big Bend, located on North Harrison Street in Alpine, offers a deep dive into the rich history of the Big Bend Region. The museum showcases the human history of the area, from Native American inhabitants to Spanish missionaries, Mexican influences, and American pioneers during westward expansion. Visitors can explore well-curated displays, artifacts, and vintage items that vividly depict the city's history.
So a museum at a small university in a small town. How good can that be? It can be GREAT! The Museum of the Big Bend was voted the #1 best small town museum in America. That should convince you to go! We were so impressed. A reasonably sized museum of the Big Bend area. Excursions, exploration, famous people, Texas Rangers, battles, skirmishes, trains, wagon trains, fossils, videos and more. Allow about 2 hours to see it all. Recommended for Teenagers and up.
Michael M — Google review
Small but extremely well done museum. Explains and covers the history of the region primarily from a perspective of the human inhabitants along the Mexican American boarder in conflict and as ranchers. In addition there are two art exhibits. I enjoyed my visit. Just an FYI, there is nothing here that small children will appreciate, as it appears geared towards adults.
Bradford C — Google review
Excellent informative museum with amazing architecture, check out the Lamella Arch ceiling it's fantastic! There's some of Hoss's things from bonanza TV show. Loads of information on Big Bend National Park, and unique art to boot. We chose to do the museum on a rainy, flash flooding day in Big Bend and as two nerdy historic buffs, this was the perfect way to spend our afternoon.
Crystal S — Google review
I really enjoyed the photography exhibit and the art! Very informative and a wonderful and helpful staff!
Patrick B — Google review
The Museums of the Big Bend are okay – not the best, but a decent place to learn some local history. Worth a visit if you’re in Alpine and have time.
Harish V — Google review
Beautiful museum about the history of the area and definitely worth visiting while in Alpine.
Natalia P — Google review
This is a small museum but an excellent one. The original museum boasts exhibits of natural history, indigenous peoples and the subsequent waves of settlers. There is a new wing added just a few years ago that showcases western art of far west Texas. This is a great place to visit families and anyone interested in the region.
Charles M — Google review
We stayed the night in Alpine and came across this fantastic museum. Loved the exhibits and the history. I loved the architecture of the museum. Don't skip over the giftshop it had really neat things and cute souvenirs.

Hancock Hill

Mentioned on

Mountain peak
Hancock Hill offers a 1.8-mile looped hiking trail with picturesque town views and an intriguing abandoned desk at the summit. It is conveniently located behind Sul Ross, allowing for a quick 15-minute hike with dogs. The All Trails app can help locate points of interest such as the desk and bike tree, as well as the cross at the highest peak. Visitors recommend retracing their steps to avoid getting lost in the maze of trails.
I used the All Trails app to find the desk and bike tree , without it - I would never have found it. I also reached the cross at the highest peak there. I was looking for another way to go down and got lost in the maze of trails there - I’d recommend going back the same way you went up. It was a nice morning hike, all and all , I spent about an hour there.
Oren W — Google review
Do not follow the gps directions to try and get here. They only lead to a private residence. To hike here you must start from the college parking lot on the opposite side of the hill.
Matthew B — Google review
This is a nice little hike to the famous scenery of a desk. I would suggest bringing a walking stick to maintain your balance when you're walking on to the starting path of rocks. Once you about 200ft up, the terrain levels out from there.

Stadium
Sights & Landmarks
Kokernot Field, often hailed as the Best Little Ballpark in Texas by Sports Illustrated, is a charming 1,400-seat replica of Chicago's Wrigley Field. Built in the 1940s by wealthy rancher Herbert L. Kokernot Jr., this historic red granite structure boasts detailed ironworks and open-air seating against a scenic backdrop.
Such a fantastically cool old ballpark. We had a fantastic night watching the Alpine Cowboys and can’t wait to come back.
Sarah P — Google review
Love the stadium. Older, of course. I gave it a 4 only because its an older building. Great for bringing the kids to a game.
Sandy G — Google review
We are watching a game, right now. Alpine Cowboys got hot when a Pecos player disrespected the #57 ON THE FIELD, behind home plate. The Pecos player didn't appear to do it on purpose. The sad thing about the whole fracas was this ......the Alpine Cowboys #5 walked across it getting to the fracas and was the hottest, angry, of them all. Although, the Pecos coach put his hand on the homepage ump. several times. Felt like he should of been ejected.
Lynna R — Google review
Great place to spend a day cheering on the hometown team.
Tim D — Google review
Either let the food side sell water or let people bring water into the stadium Everyone here is choosing to be thirsty because the line is 20 minutes long
Chris — Google review
Satchel Page and Gaylord Perry have both played on this field that is home to the Sul Ross St. Lobos baseball team and the local independent league team of the Pecos League. Great stadium with beautiful views.
D L — Google review
such a beautiful and historic field 🫶

If you're a baseball nut then you need to visit Kokernot. It's a historic ballpark with lots of history. The ballpark is need of a lot of cosmetic work beginning the men's bathroom which is disgusting.

Reata Restaurant-Alpine, TX

$$$$expensive
Southwestern restaurant (US)
Reata Restaurant in Alpine, TX is known for its legendary Texas cuisine, offering a menu that includes steaks, seafood, burgers, and Mexican food options. The restaurant has a subtly elegant western vibe with closely placed tables that encourage socializing with other guests. Visitors have praised the tenderloin tamales, chicken fried steaks, chicken fried chicken, house salad, and sour cream enchiladas.
We didn't have reservations, and had our dog with us. They let us sit out back on the patio, which was perfect! We had the whole patio to ourselves. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The chicken fried steak was delicious, as was the sides. My husband got the sour cream enchiladas and they were good as well. I enjoyed the local Blonde beer too! The manager or owner, kindest guy ever- gave our dog a bowl of water. We had an amazing experience and would go back if time allowed!
A R — Google review
Really struggled with this review. It was going to be a three star, but server saved it. Service was slow, but they warned us as soon as we arrived they were short staffed and watched them turn those without reservations away (Make reservations!). As they were busy, we ordered everything at once. We didn't receive the appetizer we ordered, but did receive the extra sides we ordered AS appetizers?!? Food was good overall, one steak was overdone and fish was a little dry, but sides "appetizers", drinks, other steak and desserts were all great. With the initial service miss and two subpar dishes, it wasn't looking good. But, unlike the other table service restaurant in town the night before (nightmare), this server knew and acknowledged some of the problems and attempted to make it right. The servers personality, 60-70% awesome food and taking ownership of problems put it well above the experience at the other place. Remember to make that reservation!
Corey S — Google review
🚨 If you have a nut allergy be VERY CAREFUL!! The food was wonderful!!! The service - Marsha! ❤️- was absolutely best in the area!! The restaurant GM was incredible. The kitchen - despite inquiring and being told multiple times that we had an allergy decided to substitute their bread crumbs on the mac and cheese with pecan filled bread. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Service staff and GM were extremely apologetic, which was kind. Walked out of the restaurant shaken, but not not deterred. Regardless of the incident we will absolutely be back again - the food was delightful.
Drew L — Google review
Went here for dinner, the food was alright and the service was good. I ordered the Tortilla Soup, it was spicy, a lot of jalapeños; the Chicken Enchiladas and the Buttermilk Pie. My husband ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken, it was huge; green beans (they were too crunchy for him) and mashed potatoes. He said the food could have been hotter. It was okay food but could have been better for the price.
Monica P — Google review
I grew up in Ft. Worth where we have a Reata Restaurant. It was the graduation, big promotion type of venue. You know, something special. We were delighted to see that Alpine’s and FTW Reata’s are related. And you can tell from the fine dining pulled off effortlessly, the innovative menu and the atmosphere. I love the idea of a restaurant situated in an old house. Many of the same menu items, but a better wine and whiskey selection. Service was very good. A young man about to head off to college. Food was Excellent. We really liked the bar and it will be on our short list when we return. Although it was raining the night we were there, they appear to have an excellent back porch area that would be great summer dinners.
Michael M — Google review
This was our second visit. Everything was excellent. I had the chicken fried steak, which was phenomenal. I personally love the murals painted on the walls outside, you can see them through the windows. A beautiful job. We didn't have a reservation, but we were there early enough to get a table. I recommend a reservation if you plan to go. It might not be needed, but it's better to be prepared. ❤️
Kathy L — Google review
Great food. The chicken with honey mustard was very tender, delicious. Must try.
Brittani R — Google review
This place was so cute and the food was very good! We got the steak tacos and the alpine nachos. The steak tacos has a lot of meat making it very filling. The steak itself was super meaty and the sauce was very flavorful. Overall me and my friend really loved the experience we had here :)

The Century Bar & Grill

Bar & grill
New American restaurant
Nestled within the historic Holland Hotel, The Century Bar & Grill offers a delightful dining experience with classic American dishes served in a bright and airy setting. From steaks and seafood to burgers and plant-based options, this charming eatery caters to various preferences. Guests can also indulge in a delectable Sunday brunch. The restaurant's catering service has received praise for its exceptional food preparation, with patrons raving about the quality of the meals.
In short, Fantastic place given you are in a small town in the vast Texas desert. With a few more details, Food was good, place had a nice vibe inside the hotel and clean and service was very nice and friendly. It would prob be 4 stars if it was in Austin but I’ll cut em slack and give them 5. Kudos to them giving good quality tasty food in such a remote location.
Ron K — Google review
Fine, I’ll give it 5 stars. I’m super cheap and the Tater dish with green beans, mushroom, and cheese is pretty boss. It’s small for $16 (about the size of a large gumbo in NOLA valued at $10), but it’s quite tasty. The Caesar salad? Good, solid. The spinach and artichoke dip? Good but even better with their fried bread dipping chip thing. Boss, and quite unique of a design (instead of a chip or bowtie noodle). Their $45 steak? Excellent. In Houston or Dallas, it’s going to be $65 for the same steak with smooth, creamy mash potatoes and a subtle crunchy, well flavored green beans. Overall, pricey but it’s in a fancy hotel. Service at the bar table? Weak. The server is running the bar and the bar-tables so he couldn’t bounce from bar to our table very easily. Nice guy just mostly busy. So…5 star still b/c of the food.
Justin L — Google review
If you want fine dining in the great unknown area of Texas which is the South-west portion… this is where you go. Top notch. This would have cost me 350 dollars in Houston. I think I paid about 200 dollars for four people with drinks here. It was underpriced considering the quality of food/drink/service received. CHEERS!!!!!!!! Order up!
Nobu, M — Google review
Tried this place again, with better results, so I upgraded it to 5 stars. Second Visit This time we enjoyed a 3 dishes: the Ribeye with asparagus spears and garlic mashed potatoes, swordfish ceviche with chips, and a cup of split pea soup with ham and a toasted slice of garlic buttered sourdough bread. All three of these were wonderful full of flavor and delicious. Beware, the swordfish ceviche is a little on the spicy side and has a good kick to it. First Visit Nice place. Very historic with that south western feel. The hotel looks cool, but this is for The Century Bar & Grill. You have to go through the bar to get there, so be sure to ask around if you can't find it and everyone will help get you there. We had the fried pickles as an appetizer and they were so good, between my son and I, we forgot the usual picture. Main courses; fish and chips (really I had fries), then the beef and bratwurst burger with waffle cut sweet potato fries. The fish was thick cut with a crumb coating fried to perfection the regular fries were, we'll regular fries. The beef and bratwurst burger, was very unique, one patty was beef and a second patty from a smashed bratwurst. Together the flavor was amplified by the caramelized onions and Horseradish sauce. The waffle cut sweet potatoe fries were delicious. Our server was very friendly and perfectly timed her table appearances when we needed something or to check on food quality and preparation. We were there for an early dinner, so the bar was busier than the restaurant.
Chris M — Google review
I had my wedding at The Holland Hotel this weekend where I had Century Bar and Grill cater my wedding dinner for a party of 27. Jon was exceptional at preparing all the food. We chose the Chicken Marsala, Chicken Alfredo, green beans, potatoes, salad, rolls, and the meat and cheese platter as an appetizer. I didn’t get many pictures due to me not having my phone on my wedding day, but all of my guests raved about how good the food was!! There was plenty of leftovers and I ate Alfredo for about three days afterwards. Jon made sure everything was perfect. I cannot recommend the Century Bar and Grill more for events!!!! Thank you so much to you and your staff for making my wedding weekend an absolute dream. PS we ate there again, and I ordered the ribeye that was delicious!! I attached a picture of my wedding plate and steak here.
Alexandria M — Google review
The food was great. Went there 2 times in a week. Service was good, the staff was very friendly. Ordered balsamic salad and calamari on day 1, day 2 was spicy chicken burger and a side salad.
Pearl J — Google review
Enjoyed my meal at Century. I was in town without having any plans and they were able to get me a table relatively quickly. This was a Tuesday in early December, so I probably just came at the right time. Food and service were good.
Casey W — Google review
Excellent food, service and ambiance. We were seated by the door to the patio so every time the door opened, we got a rush of cold air but it wasn't a big issue for us. We were eating rather quickly to get to another commitment ..... which the server was VERY accommodating. Thus if that dash of cold air might be an issue for you, consider asking for another table if they seat you there. I like to ask a server what their favorite dish is, and what do people who come here frequently order. SHE KNEW and loved sharing that with us. There's nothing more zapping of energy to start a dining experience when a server shrugs with an "I don't know". She KNEW the menu, what she liked, what her customers liked AND WHY. All homemade dressings, I couldn't decide so I gave her the decision-making. Same with dessert. She loved that. Her enjoyment on that and the back-and-forth interaction was the cherry-on-top for a great dining experience. I had the honey-glazed salmon. My husband the chicken fried chicken. My salmon was cooked PERFECTLY. P.E.R.F.E.C.T.L.Y. NOTE: She said people frequently order the fish and chips. I needed less fried and more color on my plate, as I had a catfish basket, while traveling, the night before. She said she normally doesn't eat fish but she loves their blackened fish. Oh ..... and here's a picture of the fabulous lighting fixture overhead our table and lobby of the adjoining historic hotel. Quite lovely. (Treasure hunt: look at the back of the chairs at the large table in the lobby. Very cool.)

Hancock Hill Trailhead

Mentioned on
4 lists
Hiking area
Hancock Hill Trailhead is a popular hiking spot among both locals and tourists, offering stunning 360-degree views of Alpine and the valley between the Davis and Glass Mountains. The trail starts at Sul Ross State University's parking lot, with sunrise being the ideal time for a hike due to the mild weather and beautiful golden rays illuminating the valley floor. The area features a small system of trails on university and private property, with suggested routes indicated on Google Maps.
Nice hike up a hill with great views 360 degrees. The desk at the top and the old bicycles make for interesting photos. We were there on an unusually cold January day. We stopped there on our way to Big Bend National Park.
Kevin M — Google review
Perfect for a morning hike. The views do not disappoint and the trail is accessible all the way through.
Natalia P — Google review
An amazing hike up the hill with beautiful views of the city. It took us just under an hour to find the bicycle tree and The Desk. There is a map at the entrance to the trails to help guide you. For about the last 10 minutes, we used GPS to help us out. We had also picked up a printed map from the visitor's center. Make sure to wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots as the climb is rocky and steep. Recommend going first thing in the morning as the sun is rising and it's also not too hot out. Definitely bring a bottle of water. Also bring a sharpee if you want to leave your mark on the desk. The one's in the drawers were uncapped or dried up.
Tammy N — Google review
Came to see the famous 200lbs desk located on Hancock Hill. It’s an Alpine thing to do and ran across some other hikers. It’s a moderate challenge and finding it could be an issue. Take a picture of the map and once you pass the second rock pile you’re near. You will come across some bicycles on a tree and then bam!!! The Desk.
Mr.S Q — Google review
I am glad that I hiked this hidden gem. Not only does it have the best view, but also some nice storyline. The bench and the bicycles at the top are unique. I had fun reading the entries found in the desk. It is not easy to navigate, so I leveraged all trails app to get here.
Swaroop K — Google review
This was a great hike, but there needs to be better signage to mark parking and where to start the hike. I was trying for a sunrise ascent which was beautiful. Never did see the bicycle tree or the desk.
Ivan S — Google review
A great hike in Alpine with interesting things to see. The bicycle tree and desk were cool. Have a sharpie handy. There are some in the desk to use to sign the desk and book. Have good shoes and plenty of water.
Merideth O — Google review
Unexpectedly gorgeous trails once you can find the trailhead! Google maps takes you to a different parking lot, below the trailhead. Regardless, my dog and I still had a fun adventure hike here today. There are a lot of trails and trail off shoots, none of which are marked, so be prepared to get a little lost. There are gorgeous desert, plants and beautiful scenery. Bring lots of water and good shoes!

Cow Dog is a popular food truck located in Alpine, Texas, known for its creative beef hot dogs and vegetarian options. The truck offers a variety of hot dog choices, including The Green Chile Cheese Dog, The El Pastor, The Artisan, and the Frito Pie. Customers can also enjoy outdoor seating and a charming food truck atmosphere. Additionally, Cow Dog provides quick service and a selection of sides and beverages to complement the meal.
Such a fun place. Live music along with beer available on Saturdays. The breakfast sandwiches are spot on. My biscuits egg sandwich was flaky and perfect. The hot dog truck creates magic. Thoroughly enjoyed my footling "German" with extra sauerkraut, however the "El Pastor" is my favorite. The crew over there are super friendly and fun
Zia P — Google review
I’m not one to be dramatic…. BUT OMG this place is freaking amazing! I got the El Pastor, because I was feeling adventurous and living on the edge. It was probably the second best decision of my life. The bun was perfectly toasted and didn’t fall apart on you. The hot dog was perfectly grilled. But it was the toppings that sent it to another galaxy. The cilantro pesto and mayo sauces were phenomenal. But I think it was the unassuming grilled pineapple tidbits that made this the best hot dog, like ever.
Katrina K — Google review
We had the last dog was great 👍 The Mac with green 🌶️ ohhh man that's the best I've had !! This guy's cooks some great dogs but runs out after 7 80 dogs !! But great meet the owner he was not happy he ran out . Rich

I drove to Alpine for a weekend trip from Dallas and let me tell you Cow Dog’s hot dogs ALONE made the trip worth it. You have to get the El Pastor, shown on the right! Owner is super chill, service is great. Honestly I’m gonna come back tomorrow and try a few more!! Best hot dog I’ve ever had.

Monday evening is pizza night! We enjoyed sitting outside with our dog, listening to live music and having pizza and salad. There is a bar attached that serves beer and wine. Unfortunately, we did not get to try a hot dog, but that's ok we enjoyed the pizza!

The university's campus offers stunning views and serves as a starting point for hiking trails that lead to breathtaking 360-degree vistas of Alpine and the surrounding mountains. The institution also houses a museum with unique displays and plenty of information.
The home of college rodeo and an outstanding police academy.

School in the middle of nowhere. I know this school only from the train. We passed through Alpine, TX, in the midst of a desert no man's land somewhere in uninhibited Texas on a summer afternoon. The remoteness of this place is impossible to exaggerate. Why, when upper education represents an introduction to the greater world, would students choose to come to this next of hermits? Possibly this is a special school dedicated to the study of the midget mountains of Texas. It is alarming, though, that so many people would dedicate themselves to this field.

Always lose power and rooming situations are a nightmare. They don't know enough dorms so they triple everyone on the 1st and 2nd floor. I've been tripled all semester with no money returned. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, TRUST ME! Can't wait to start classes at a different college.

Despite its old-fashioned charm, Alpine's downtown area also features modern attractions like food trucks and colorful murals that attract tourists. Additionally, the town offers unique dining experiences such as Reata Restaurant, known for its upscale cowboy cooking inspired by the nearby ranch featured in the movie 'Giant.'
Beautiful bookstore with a very good curation of books! We loved it so much we went back again :) Staff was very friendly and helpful when we needed help picking out something for our friend. They even have a little children's corner (which is more like their own room) decorated with fairy lights and stuffed animals which was so adorable. They are even connected to a cafe which serves delicious coffee! Would totally recommend checking this place out!
Uyen N — Google review
Our family loves exploring local book shops when we travel. Front Street Books was one of our all time favorites! My husband and I each found books but our kids really loved the kids section and the staff was unbelievably kind. My son was looking for a specific book that they didn't have because it was being released that week. We had made the purchase for everyone else and moved on to the coffee shop attached. One of the women tracked us down in there to give him a preview book by the same author that they had literally just received. It absolutely made the whole trip for him! Our youngest son was on the fence about a book but we went back the morning we left for him to get it. This time, they tracked us down outside as we were about to get in our car to give him some trading cards that went along with the book! I can't recommend it enough! Go to Alpine and go check out Front Street Books!!

This place is a treasure! They have a great selection of books and gifts, a clean and well designed storefront, and lovely staff. They very kindly wrapped up a surprise for my daughter while we were shopping so she wouldn't see what I was buying for her. I love that they have such a nice kids room and a used book section as well.
Kristen C — Google review
Great little book store with a lot to offer. Plenty of options and unique pieces. There is a kids section to explore. The staff is very friendly.
David T — Google review
I always make a point to stop in at the local indie bookstore when I’m traveling, and this one is a gem. Beautiful curated and displayed collection of books with helpful handwritten recommendations by the staff tucked in as bookmarks in many. There selection of books on local history, travels and nature guides simply cannot be beat. I couldn’t drag myself out my kids out of this store until closing time. We left with a stack of books, including some wrapped mystery books that the staff gave to my children as Christmas presents.
Robin S — Google review
Has a great variety of new and used books. Lots of genres to choose from, connected to a coffee shop as well. Staff is very relaxed and lets you browse, if you need help and ask at the counter they are very knowledgeable on what’s in the store on hand. They offered lots of thoughtful suggestions for other patrons.

Having been a former SRSU student, I never went up to see The Desk. When I worked at SRSU I finally made the hike to see it. What a waste of time. Plus, it was hard to find since it was my first time hiking to see it.

Restaurant
Spicewood Restaurant is a versatile dining spot offering a variety of dishes including steaks, seafood, sandwiches, and pizza. While closed on Tuesdays and Sundays, it's open for lunch and dinner on other days. The restaurant is known for its melt-in-your-mouth Tenderloin steak and New York Strip, complemented by loaded baked potatoes. The nachos with smoked brisket are also highly recommended. Additionally, the lemon blueberry crumb cake makes for a delightful dessert option.
A True West Texas Gem! Spicewood captures the spirit of Alpine with its inviting, family-friendly atmosphere, thoughtful details, and a menu that delivers. The Brisket Nachos are spot on—smoky, flavorful, and generously layered. The burgers are nothing short of outstanding, the steak tips tender and well-seasoned, and the cocktails executed with timeless precision. Copper tables and leather-bound menus add a touch of rustic elegance, while the scenic views and cool Alpine breeze create the perfect backdrop. A must-visit spot for anyone seeking elevated comfort food and warm hospitality in West Texas.
Karla K — Google review
Known for its warm West Texas hospitality, the restaurant serves up flavorful American cuisine with local flair—favorites include the green chile burger, seared salmon, and house-made gnocchi. The cozy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace and mountain-view patio, makes it perfect for both casual nights out and special occasions. While most reviews praise the food and ambiance, service can be hit-or-miss at times. Still, it’s a standout spot for a memorable meal in Alpine.

I’m so glad we found this place. The food was SO good, the service was knowledgeable, friendly, and quick, and the location is great! While we were staying in Alpine, this restaurant was a short drive away from the city center. This is a definite recommend from me!
Lindsay B — Google review
First the food was prepared perfectly and the menu has very good variety. I loved the hatch green chili cheese burger and fries... The beef patty seasoned to perfection, big pieces of green chili, fresh trimmings, juicy and the bun held it all together. My wife had the redfish with pico cream sauce and wait for it... Spaghetti squash! We sat in the covered patio facing the mountains and shared a bottle of Austin Hope Cabernet. The manager checked twice to ensure our order was to perfection and the wait staff are very friendly. Can accommodate large groups too. If you're hungry i highly recommend Spicewood.
David P — Google review
Such a great dinner! The blackened redfish was amazing. The view in the back room is so cool! Lorrie was our server and she was fantastic. Excellent service.
Jeannie D — Google review
Spicewood is what I like to call a “can’t miss.” The smoked buffalo wings, the service, and the view from the patio are all deserving of the five star review. Special shout out to Lisa for all the great advice about where to shop and eat in Terlingua.
AmyJo F — Google review
A great addition to Alpine. I’m glad I overheard others talking about SW so we gave it a try. Brisket nachos to start, Caeser salad, and finished with a 10 oz ribeye with crispy Brussels. It was all fantastic and our server, Taylor, was a gem. Definitely going back!
JimBob S — Google review
We really enjoyed our dinner at Spicewood Restaurant. Our server made some great suggestions and took great care of us. My husband & I were on a date night and I really appreciated the thoughtful space & attention Townes gave us. Great service!

Hotel Parker at Quarter Circle 7

Hotel
Day spa
Hotel Parker at Quarter Circle 7 is a cozy and laid-back accommodation offering complimentary breakfast, a bar, indoor pool, and spa. The hotel's Spicewood Restaurant provides an exceptional dining experience with True Cattlemans Hospitality. Guests appreciate the spacious and well-decorated rooms featuring comfortable beds and lavender toiletries. While some found the included breakfast disappointing, others enjoyed the welcoming check-in process and the option to purchase delightful hill country soaps at the front desk.
This is well worth trying. Quiet location, not far from Alpine restaurants (give Line Thai a visit - really good). The room was spacious, the pillows excellent, and the breakfast tasty.
Mark N — Google review
I did enjoy some what of my stay here it could have been better. I was staying here so that I could go to big bend national park to photograph a comet. As all the other hotels, and lodges were booked out for months. The bed in my room was comfortable, and the shower water was amazing except they could have had shelves for your soaps. Some things could be different in the room the rooms need a little updating. The door to the shower I did not like, because it made it hard to navigate through the hallway leading to the door. Making things very cramped also there we’re no usb charging ports by the night stand. There was an outlet but it was hanging out of the wall. And the fan on the air conditioner wasn’t very powerful my room did keep cool though. The property was very quiet which I did like, and it was located in a good part of town. Another thing I didn’t really like was that in the morning house keeping kept constantly pounding on the doors. I had a long drove at night back to the hotel so I was very tired the next day. Also I was charged for some ridiculous taxes on my room a “city” and “state” tax. What does that have to do with the hotel I stay in ?
Tyler — Google review
Ok not sure why people have negative reviews on this hotel , it’s a cozy hotel will a Texas charm. The restaurant next to it is top notch when comes to food . If you come to this place expecting commercial grade hotel experience you are the wrong place . It delivers Texas hospitality and great food . The only reason for the 4 star is the breakfast could b e a bit better but it gets a pass because of the vibe dining area . Overall great place to visits for the 1st time. May be next time I can stay to indulge on all its amenities.
Aaron A — Google review
Nice clean rooms. The outside of the hotel is spotless. We will be back soon.
Ernie M — Google review
Stunning! Best hotel in all of west Texas. The service is great, the grounds are clean. The views if the twin sisters are spectacular. Great hot tub and wonderful facilities. I am very impressed with this hotel and will always try to stay here. Trust me - its worth the drive and don't try anywhere else!
Tony B — Google review
Loved staying here. Staff was friendly, the interior is wooden and authentic, as well as my room had that same feel and was meticulously clean. The bed was comfortable; there is an indoor pool separate of the building w a hot tub which was cool too. This town is enchanted and worth visiting pre-Big Bend.
Pamela A — Google review
My family and I spent several days here and loved it. The hotel has a rustic feel and an amazing view. The rooms were clean and had a homey feel. As great as the hotel was I would have to say that the absolute best part was the customer service. Becca was just amazing. Traveling can be absolutely stressful and she went above and beyond to make our stay there stress free. We actually flubbed our check out day and Becca worked with her manager and thankfully they allowed us to stay another night. If I could give them 10 stars I could. . I highly recommend this hotel if anyone is looking for an amazing place to stay in Alpine.

Privately owned. Rooms are clean and managed daily, which is currently rear even in most places. Great facilities with swimming pool, fire pit tables and hot jacuzzi. Free parking. Breakfast is modest. I would stay there again.

Roux

Mentioned on
1 list
Cajun restaurant
Roux is a delightful gem in Alpine, perfect for those seeking fresh and convenient meal options. This charming spot specializes in grab-and-go items, making it an ideal choice for busy families or anyone on the move. With a lovely outdoor patio, you can savor your meals al fresco while enjoying the ambiance. The menu features an array of delicious offerings, including standout dishes like their renowned chicken salad and flavorful pimento cheese.
You will find no other place to eat healthier and delicious in town. I stop by to work at Alpine once a month and every time they have a different menu options and food is fresh with quality ingredients. Here is now my preffered place for grab to go foods.
Robert S — Google review
Absolute favorite place in Alpine for lunch. Having a timed lunch break makes it hard to grab something sometimes besides mcds. Never had anything bad from here. Love the healthier grab and go options.
Elizabeth H — Google review
Delicious food, but it is grab and go, not a sit down restaurant. We ate ours at the picnic tables outside. I recommend the potato leek soup and the chicken pie. It reminded me of a Cornish pasty but with a Southwestern flavor.
Liz T — Google review
The perfect quick lunch spot! Inside was warm and inviting. All the food was ready to grab and go, and had all been fresh made! The chicken pot pie was still warm from the oven. Will definitely come back!
Christina B — Google review
Everything is pre made and individually packed, but fresh and delicious. Nice little seating area outside, nothing inside. Easy place to stop for a quick healthy bite.
Andrew S — Google review
Prepared foods to go or eat right there in the garden. Veggies are cleaned and dried just the right amount to keep the bread fresh for the sandwiches.
Jonathan S — Google review
There is seating outside but it is more of a take out place. Great food made fresh every day and very friendly day staff!!

But expensive but the sandwich was so good it was worth the money. Everyone was friendly and the small interior was very cute.

Guzzi Up

$$$$affordable
Pizza restaurant
Guzzi Up is a laid-back Italian eatery that offers a mix of traditional and inventive pizzas, as well as pasta dishes, complemented by a selection of wine and beer. Housed in a charmingly converted garage, the restaurant boasts a unique atmosphere. Despite its limited menu, the offerings are described as delicious and flavorful. The attentive service adds to the overall positive dining experience.
Great little Italian place. I've posted the menu, because it is limited and appears to have changed since one was last posted. This quaint restaurant is a converted garage with unique atmosphere. The items they do offer are delicious and very tasty. The service was great even though they were short handed and trying to hire more wait staff. The waiters on duty were on time with everything and worked well as a team. What we ordered: 1. Large Pepperoni Pizza - the staple and easily compare able item. Ours was awesome, hand tossed, lots of Pepperoni and cheese. 2. Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with chips - this was probably the best tasting sandwich I've had in awhile. Just the right amount of heat with the right amount of tang. Big pieces of chicken in a Pizza crust folded over, great idea. 3. Hot Turkey and Mozzarella with tomato basil sauce and a side of chips. My wife loved it. It was tasty and had the same pizza crust folded over. 4. Shrimp Scampi - very tasty with plenty of shrimp and topped with a healthy heaping of shredded Mozzarella on top. There is plenty of sauce for dipping leftover, so be sure to order the bread sticks, which I did not.
Chris M — Google review
The servers get 5 stars for personality. Great service. It is extremely busy here. I wasn't very hungry so I got a mini cheese pizza. Honestly, it tasted like a frozen pizza heated up in the microwave, I'd give it 2 stars. My husband got penne with marinara, cheese, and mushrooms, salad, and crostinis...he'd give his food 3 stars. They did charge me for a sprite I never was served, so I just drank water. They are removing it. They appear to be short of help like everywhere, so I'm grateful for the good personalities of the servers.
Julianne — Google review
Had a fantastic lunch on our way through Alpine. The service was great and food was yummy. Definitely a wonderful experience. We can vouch for the artichoke dip, meatball sub, margarita pizza, and Caesar salad...all great!
Jenn P — Google review
Where to begin...the server was very personable and attentive. There is a decent selection of bottled beers. We had the boneless wings to start with and they were really good. This was followed by the buffalo bleu cheese pizza and it was likewise very good
Murph — Google review
This nice friendly place located on the main Street of Alpine, Texas. Good food, clean &a big place. A relic from a bygone era takes a new life. A former gas station/ car repair shop. It's now a fun trendy pizza place. You can order salads, pizza and a bottle of wine. A bit over priced, restrooms located outside the establishment.
JJ V — Google review
We love this place. Great Italian fare. We stop in every time we are in Alpine. They didn't have exactly what I wanted on the menu, but the chef prepared a custom order for me. Our server was outstanding. Excellent experience as always!!
Tracy B — Google review
The food was really good. Their hot sandwiches are actually made from scratch calzones. The picture here is of some really good soup and a cowboy hot sandwich. If you are in the area, food is worth stopping in.
Michael L — Google review
Absolutely delicious pizza. The crust is the perfect blend of thin and hand tossed. Veggies and meat are super fresh! Sauce is perfect. Not too tangy, not too sweet! Highly recommend.

The Century Bar & Grill

Temporarily Closed
$$$$expensive
Very cool.)

La Casita

$$$$affordable
Mexican restaurant
La Casita is a charming Tex Mex restaurant with a simple and festive atmosphere, featuring a rustic covered patio. While the service may be slow due to understaffing, the staff are doing their best to provide an enjoyable dining experience. The menu offers well-made traditional Mexican dishes like enchiladas, combo plates, and tacos that are deliciously greasy. The restaurant is popular among locals and visitors alike for its authentic Mexican flavors.
What a fun little place , although it can seat probably 50 people inside and maybe 10 outside. Colorful, great service, and really good food. I’m vegetarian so the cheese enchiladas were perfect and good news- the beans had no lard and the rice no chicken broth. My husband is a carnivore and throughly enjoyed his ground beef enchiladas as well as the beans and rice. The place fills quickly so go early! 😍
Susanne M — Google review
Order to go: soft tacos with rice and beans plate. I am not the least impressed with the quality of food served here. Beans had a strange flavor and rice tasted awful! Greasy rice 🤢 The meat in the tacos tasted okay. I didn’t finish the plate.
Mitchell O — Google review
This restaurant has been open 49 yrs, and there is definitely a reason for that. Excellent service, excellent food, and excellent prices.
Priscilla J — Google review
Everything was great! My only gripe is they use canned soda. The floor in there is like a bouncy house.
Tom O — Google review
This is what Mexican food should taste like. I couldn’t get enough. I’m not quite sure if I have ever publicly sopped up the last of the enchilada sauce on a plate with a tortilla. The sauce was out of this world. The only other crispy taco shells that I’ve had this good in my life were my mothers – God bless her soul. For crispy tacos- the freshness of the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese was what you could only achieve at home. The carne asada was sheer perfection. The salsa was too spicy for my liking, but another in our party inhaled two bowls by himself. No thrills, no frills inside. None needed. The food speaks for itself. They close at 3 pm. Cash only-no plastic.
Auda G — Google review
Our favorite classic Mexican food restaurant in Alpine! It never fails to greet us with friendly, quick service of delicious Mexican food classics.
Jacque M — Google review
2.0 | the staff was very friendly but sadly the food was not great at all. I felt like the guac had sour cream? it didn't have seasoning, lime, onion, any of the normal things you'd expect in traditional guacamole. the rice and beans we left on the plate bc it just looked like mush, and the steak was quite chewy and overdone. sadly it seems like the authenticity of Mexican cuisine has been lost to cater to its crowd. unfortunately, I would not recommend.
Kim P — Google review
Man, I keep trying to give this place another shot, but I think last night was the last time. The chips and salsa were subpar. Chips were a little stale and the salsa was really liquidy. My son had the Mexican plate, which he liked, and we had the beef fajitas and a green chicken enchilada. I absolutely cannot stand their rice! It is very mushy and flavorless. It's not hard to make fluffy rice, so I really wish they would do better at this. The beef fajitas tasted as if the meat was boiled instead of grilled and the guacamole had sour cream in it. I've also had it with pepper in it here, and didn't like that either. I will say that they do have some of the best chicken quesadillas, and I highly recommend them.

Penny’s Diner

American restaurant
I am uncertain about the name of the woman, but I believe she was present throughout my stay at Penny's Diner from check-in around 8pm until breakfast at 10am. She was a diligent worker and contributed to the pleasant atmosphere. The food at the restaurant was exceptional, with fast service and ample portions. The coffee cups were consistently filled, adding to the welcoming ambiance. The interior of the diner exuded a cozy, homey vibe that made it all the more enjoyable.
We were hungry and just wanted some home cooked food. I had a hamburger steak with brown gravy, mushrooms, and onions with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. Very tasty. It fit the bill for my hunger and I enjoyed a dessert of banana cream pie which was delicious. I especially liked the light crust. Our waiter, Louis, was great! Thanks
Cynthia W — Google review
Got to the restaurant at 10:44 pm and the young guy working there told us that we couldn't eat there because they were cleaning and they will. Open again at 11 pm. We ordered food and it was ready at 11:01 pm and still, we couldn't eat at the dinner. We had to take it to go.
Yadira P — Google review
I hate to do bad reviews, but you can't fix what you may not know. Our food was good, but the coffee was terrible. We were in the Army so we've had bad coffee. This was terrible. 😬 It's small, but I think there's outside seating, too. Help us help you stay in business! I would hate to encourage people to go to McDs since there isn't a lot of places to eat in Alpine. A great breakfast place would do awesome. Your competition is rude so I'd rather support you, Penny's. It was packed, but we got our food in a decent time. I did appreciate the mobile ordering, even though I prefer a menu, since it was busy. 😆 Hang in there!
Jennifer W — Google review
Great little diner. We love finding places like this. Eat locally instead of chain restaurants. The CFC was great! They let me swap for onion rings for the second side. I finished it with a piece of chocolate cream pie for dessert. Man was it good!! Louis was a great server. His suggestion of pie was perfect. Great job, Penny's Diner!

I used to go here weekly about 10 years ago and loved it. 5 years ago we went and the waitress was methed out of her mind and the service and food was horrible. We were in town a few days ago and thought we would give it another try. Well the waitress wasn't high and kept my drink full but they didn't have a lot of ingredients like tomatoes for the BLT among other stuff. The lettuce on our food had black spots and edges were gross. I could go on and on. We will never go back to this place again. It's sad cause the place used to be so good and a great atmosphere.
Tom O — Google review
Took forever to get the food and it was pretty subpar. Barely any bacon in the hash browns and the whole meal was pretty bland.
Caylan J — Google review
Worst experience ever. Came in and ordered chicken strips and a grilled cheese. Took over 45 minutes and the waitress finally addressed it. Blamed the cook and us for ordering on the online menu and paying through it even though nothing else was said. Got our food and it was soggy bread on the grilled cheese and like warm chicken strips. Didn’t get any refills. Can definitely tell the waitress is here for a check and nothing else.
Sean S — Google review
I'm not sure what the lady's name was, but I'm pretty sure she was there from my check in around 8pm until when I got breakfast around 10am. Very hard worker! But the food was great! The food came out quick, and my coffee cup was always full. It had such a homelike feel to the inside and if I ever go back to Big Bend State Park I'm definitely stopping back by here for more delicious food.

Breakfast restaurant
Magoo's Place comes highly recommended by locals and visitors alike. The food is excellent, with hearty breakfast options like the #1 plate and unique dishes such as chicken fried steak with jalapeno gravy. The service is top-notch, even during busy times, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Despite being a popular spot, the atmosphere is fun and lively, making it a must-visit in the Alpine area.
Love the breakfast at Magoo’s. Service can be slow, but it’s worth the wait. Soft, fresh tortillas and wonderful beans are on my order every time. Huevos Rancheros today! Picture is a half order.

If you are a tourist, give this a pass. We arrived and you seat yourself. While they were quick to bring drink orders, three other tables came, were seated and ordered before us. I finally had to find a waitress and ask to order.

Excellent food! Great prices and exceptional customer service. Not the mention but the town is beautiful and amazing

Diner with lots of diners. They were super busy, but we were waited on quickly and got our food quickly. We both had burgers, and they were both very good. Grilled buns, fresh meat, and all of the fixings. They also had Mexican fare and American things like chicken fried steak.

Passing through Alpine, TX on a road trip. We found Magoo's. We were hoping to have breakfast, but they switched to the lunch menu at 10:50. We were a little bummed out about that. However, we tried the cheese burger and chicken fried steak. Both were very good. Dr. Peppers were a good accompaniment. Magoo's was very clean. The service was mostly friendly. Only two ladies serving every table. When we arrived there was only one lady. She was very busy and was a little terse. We thought about leaving, but in the end, we were glad we stayed. Lot's of locals. The servers seemed to know everyone. I'd give this experience a solid B.

Cute local spot in Alpine! Food was fresh and just like a home-cooked meal from grandma. I got the #1 on the breakfast menu - 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 1 sausage, and 2 pancakes. Service was prompt until I was ready to leave. Had to wait a little while for the check to come to my table so that I could go up front to pay. Please note that there is a slight up charge for paying with credit instead of cash. Great food and place overall! Would recommend and will come back the next time I’m in town. 😀

This place came highly recommended, but I have no idea why unless Alpine just doesn't have any good restaurants. The food was acceptable at most...nothing special at all. Although simple, the green chili chicken enchiladas were pretty tasty...beans and rice cooked okay...great if you are really hungry and not particular. The bacon on the cheeseburger wasn't really cooked (ack) and the fries seemed over cooked. The service was not so good. The waitress was very snippy and probably the rudest waitress Ive encountered in a long time. We definitely felt like we were a burden to her just trying to make our order. Stuff was dropped on our table in a quick unfriendly way and there was really no care or appreciation of our business. I'd rather go to McDonalds across the street if I ever venture back to Alpine.

We had a Togo order. Told us it will take 10 minutes which we are fine with. After 30 minutes of waiting for 2 tacos, they still didn’t come out. I talked to the waitresses and told them that there were 2 different tables that have gotten food before us as they came in after we arrived. 40 minutes total for 2 tacos. Horrible service.

Alicia's Mexican Restaurant

$$$$cheap
Mexican restaurant
Restaurant
A humble eatery with a drive-thru window, Alicia's Mexican Restaurant offers a variety of breakfast burritos and burgers, along with other delicious dishes. The Asado burrito is particularly outstanding, providing a pleasurable mid-morning meal that may be too spicy for those with more sensitive palates. While cash-only and lacking indoor dining options may pose inconveniences, diners can comfortably eat in their vehicles or enjoy the outdoor seating on pleasant days.
Excellent food 😋. Authentic Mexican food is very tasty and truly chiloso... mmmmm. I loved it just like abuela used to make. It's pricey, but very great food. Made to order, served 🔥 hot. The red enchiladas are the best.

Came for breakfast due to the reviews. Logistic things off the bat- they are cash only, there is a 20 min wait, salsa is 1.25$ extra for small cups. The burritos themselves were good, the tortillas were tasty. As a vegetarian, I got the trash can burrito without meat, and my wife got the trash can burrito without potato. The other reviews mention these burritos being extremely large and filling- however, we did not notice these to be particularly impressive in this regard. My wife experienced some rude customer service, we were charged 24$ for 2 burritos, and then when we received the burritos , they were mislabeled. And with the aforementioned 20 min wait and extra charge for salsa, overall this made for a mediocre experience. Would not come back

We showed up with 8 people. Our server greeted us promptly. The food was amazing and it was so nice to experience a locally owned restaurant! Highly reccommend stopping in and trying the menudo; it was delicious!!!!

Highly recommended by everyone, including Texas Monthly, but the food offering was quite limited, service was slow, the food mediocre. 2 Nescafé coffees, and two breakfast plates set me back at 50 bucks plus tip. The place was packed with people, both sit-down and takeout. Go figure

Simply the best. Vegetarian friendly - beans are made without lard. I'm a repeat customer and Alicia's is consistently delish and friendly. I miss the indoor diner option, but I'm happy with however they choose to operate!

We love this place ,the only thing is is that they only take cash ,so brings your monies w you . Other than that …ohh and they don’t have sweet tea . Other than that the food is delicious home made and on point .

This place was recommended by the Hispanic lady at the Visitor Center in Alpine. She was really right! The food was to die for. I ate 2/3's of the posted hamburger. For me, that is a miracle. I have a stomach about the size of a walnut.

Delicious build your own burritos for the kids — preferring fewer ingredients (potato, bacon). The salsa gets high marks; spicy, slow burn, tastes homemade. They served us chips and salsa at 10 am when we asked. Very friendly staff.

We never have a bad experience at this gem of an airport. They have the most courteous, thoughtful, altogether genuine attendants. We drive in for groceries from our far off ranch to this location, because we love the town park and library. This would not be an option for us, if it wasn't for the considerate provision of their loaner vehicle. They also have exceptional restroom facilities that are kept open 24 hours. Cannot say enough good things about this stop!

Landed for gas and a quick pee during their XMas break. They posted a photo with a phone number in case you needed them, $50 call out fee. The pilot shack was still unlocked, and it had a computer terminal of some sort that I didn't use and the bathrooms looked decent. The self serve pump had a clunky interface but it worked just fine once I figured its quirks out.
