Nature & Parks
Potatso National Park, situated on a high plateau, is China's first national park to meet International Union for Conservation of Nature standards. Spanning 1,300 square kilometers, it boasts a well-preserved primitive landscape with lakes, wetlands, forests, meadows, and diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the lush green forest and admire the stunning scenery of Shudu Lake by walking along the plank road.
The park indeed lives up to its reputation and is clearly one of the best in China. Unfortunately there were intermittent showers when we were there, which made our exploration a bit more challenging....we had to take a few stops along the way. Nevertheless, it was a good outing.
DENNIS T — Google review
Visited in November. Apart from yellow trees, no other Autumnal colours. Already very cold especially in the shade and frost could be seen on the ground. Pleasant overall but nothing much to be seen. Thought that the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley nearer Lijiang looked more like a national park with the majestic snow covered mountain peaks. Only visit if you have time and enjoy nature walks.
Siew T — Google review
Don’t come here! Ticket price is CNY 138 which includes ferries within the park. But I don’t think that worth it. The scenery was normal for me. There is 2 lakes to visit Shudu lake and Bita sea. Nothing special though There’re extra charged scenery. Boating on Shudu lake. Hiking on primal forest and leaping in forest. I don’t think this is a national park but a business square in a mountain.
Geetze Z — Google review
Was there end August 2025 as part of the tour package that we signed up for. Park is huge ! We arrived on a rainy day. We took the bus ride and the boat ride (at I believe Shudu Lake). It was a looong walk in the drizzles and dont know what to expect. Anyway, we were glad to be back at the restaurant / retails for a warm bubble tea after a 70mins walk in the drizzles. Was told to keep pumping Oxygen, so, we did just that. Probably, had we come on a sunny day, it would be better experience.
Siu B — Google review
The landscape is beautiful but it was super crowded and we couldn’t really enjoy the experience. Many people only interested in taking pictures and using disposable oxygen bottles are making this really not sustainable
Stefania G — Google review
From the main entrance after you buy the entrance ticket, walk in to get a bus ride. If you love nature scenery, may spend half day to walk, to dance, to get a boat ride, drink a cup of coffee to feel how lucky you are to be able to step in this beautiful piece of land.
Li N — Google review
Very disappointed with the visit here. Possibly due to some of the park being closed, but I found neither lake particularly impressive. The views were pretty normal and I thought it was not at all worth the time
Nathan Y — Google review
Potato National Park truly lives up to its name. The area looks amazing during this season, dotted with wild yaks and horses as you traverse through the lush forests of the national park. There are plenty of hiking trails for visitors as well as a scenic ferry and bus ride as well. If you are lucky, you can even spot the glorious Yulong Snow Mountain’s peak!

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Mentioned on

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a natural wonder located in Yunnan's Yulong County, China. It is considered one of the deepest gorges globally and offers breathtaking views of the Yangtze River as it flows through a narrow passage between the Haba Snow Mountain and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The gorge is part of the Three Parallel Rivers National Park, which also includes Meili and Haba Snow Mountains.
Oh! what a fantastic gorge. I truly recommend to go down the gorge to the viewing platform. You can walk down or take the escalators as well. We walked down, it is not much effort. You can see and feel the force of Jinsha Jiang river. This place can get busy. It is recommended to get ticket in advance.
Vijay J — Google review
This is a hiking place but even if you do not wish to hike , you can still take a public bus from “Lijiang passenger transport terminal” to the entrance to take amazing photos of the Tiger statue & the gushing river! Further, you can arrange for private car transport to go to Tea Horse guesthouse and see the million dollar view of Jade Dragon snow mountain right in front of you ! If you choose to hike , the full hike would require you to first go to 纳西雅阁 Naxi guesthouse , the starting point , to hike the challenging upslope “28 bends” and reach Tea Horse guesthouse / Halfway guesthouse to stay the night, before continuing on to either 1) Tina’s guesthouse to buy tickets to take the public bus to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La or 2) Teacher Zhang’s guesthouse to arrange for private car pick up to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La For half day hike, you would have to arrange private car transport to either Tea Horse / Halfway guesthouse and then hike the rest of the way to either Tina’s or Teacher Zhang guesthouse. Do note some parts of the hike after the waterfall are difficult and you need to be careful. Note: When I visited , many of the scenic spots in the middle of the gorge such as the Gorge rock etc. were closed due to reports of accidents, hopefully they will open again soon… Overall, the scenery is as authentic as you can get and the view of the gushing river and mountain is truly spectacular !
Live L — Google review
This spot is a must-see! The views of the mountains and (aggressive) river stream are really incredible. The one caveat is that climbing up the stairs after you're done sightseeing can be brutal if you're not used to physical activity. They have a lot of benches along the climb back up for resting or you can buy an escalator package to save the energy
Kelly W — Google review
Magnificent scenic tour. Different part of the year has different views and experience. For those who are unable to do stairs, you have to pay for the escalator service. its worth it because its a long way down and up. Wind is really strong so warm clothes are definitely required.
Lim F — Google review
Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) is one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world, located on the Jinsha River (a tributary of the Yangtze) in Yunnan, China. Carved between the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, the gorge is famous for its dramatic cliffs, roaring rapids, and breathtaking hiking trails. Legend says a tiger once leaped across its narrowest point, giving the gorge its name. Adventurers flock here for challenging treks, while the thunderous waves crashing through the narrow passage create an awe-inspiring natural spectacle, making it a must-see for nature lovers and thrill-seekers.
Ts. ( — Google review
This is a Large natural gorge, one of the deepest in the world! Reconmended to pay escalator fees of RMB70 both way. But, u still need to climb 200 staircase down/up! Not wheelchair friendly. If you don't have energy to climb staircase, not Reconmended. The toilet also not in good condition. It is tourist spot, hope local authorities can take some action.

Great trip to the top but be prepared for a further two hundred steps to the summit. Great experience in perfect weather.

Amazing experience. We started from a village in the north east where we found a guide. We hiked up to the base camp (4100) on the first day and then made our bid for the summit on the second day with a full decent back to the village on the same day.

Yila Grassland of Napa Lake

Mentioned on
9 lists
Yila Grassland of Napa Lake is a picturesque expanse of grassland located west of the Old Town near Napa Lake. During the rainy season, parts of the grassland are covered with water, forming a beautiful lake. In autumn, the landscape transforms with golden and red hues, creating a stunning sight. Visitors can observe cows and horses grazing in the area and witness locals drying grass for winter feeding.
The landscape here changes with the seasons, but we visited on the last day of July. The lake had mostly dried up, unveiling a stunning expanse of grassland. It was a breathtaking view, with yak, goats, and horses grazing peacefully. The area was vast and serene, with hardly any crowds—perfect for photos. It's only a 15-20 minute ride from Dukezong Ancient City. Definitely worth a visit!
Mohammad H — Google review
Pretty expanse of grassland, although after it's rainy season a chunk of the grassland will be covered with water forming a lake. However since it's autumn, it's also beautiful with smattering of golden and red colors. Lots of cows and horses feeding in the grassland. We drove around the lake but also walked through a village where locals are drying grass, for winter feeding perhaps?

First National Park in China!! Absolutely breathtaking with turquoise lake, blossoming rhododendron, verdant spruce forests, and many more! Best season to visit is Spring from May to June before the rainy season and when it is not that chilly.

Balagezong Shangri-La Grand Canyon National Park is a breathtaking natural gem nestled near the town of Shangri-La in Yunnan Province, China. This stunning canyon is part of the Three Parallel Rivers World Natural Heritage Site and can be reached in about two hours by car from downtown Shangri-La. As you journey through winding mountain roads, you'll find yourself captivated by the dramatic landscapes that unfold around you.
A must visit amazing place located in the holy place of Shangri-la China. A group of us of 22 people spent 1 whole day here. Breath taking views, glass viewing platform. All walking wooden pathways are well maintain. We took a slow walk and enjoy the surroundings.
Chee B — Google review
What's not to like. Cool weather, lots of fresh clean air , beautiful canyon views.
Cheang L — Google review
Stunning views as majestic as Zion/Grand Canyon in the US. Top highlight for my visit to Shangri La!
Nathan Y — Google review
Balagezong Canyon is jaw dropping, but the real monument here isn’t cliffs or rivers, it’s Sina Dingzhu. Born barefoot in Bala Village, blinded in one eye as a kid, he trekked five days just to see electricity for the first time. Instead of sighing and going home, he thought, ‘Yeah, I’ll just build a road through mountains that even goats side eye.’ Thirty years of struggle, ridicule, and sheer stubbornness later, he did it. In 2008 the road opened, and suddenly his village had power, phones, opportunity, and a future. The trip itself is part theme park, part TED Talk. The bus winds through canyons while screens play documentaries about Dingzhu’s life, so you feel guilty for ever complaining about traffic jams. At the tourist center you swap buses like you’re queuing for rides, only here the rides are ancient Bodhi trees clinging to cliffs, stupas smothered in prayer flags, and Echo Valley with a glass walkway for people who like testing their bladder control. There’s even a zip line, because why not turn spiritual awe into an adrenaline coupon. The Grand Canyon Trail is the real highlight, a peaceful boardwalk beside turquoise streams so clear the fish look like they’re in 4K. If you’re still standing, the Shambala Buddha Tower at 4,050 meters will humble you, either with mystical beauty or altitude-induced hallucinations. Balagezong is more than scenery, it’s living proof that one stubborn dreamer can outmuscle fate. Sina Dingzhu didn’t just build a road, he built a bridge between isolation and hope. The canyon takes your breath, his story takes your excuses.

Highly suggest to stay one night in this area. Contains several different places to visit with some travel distance by cars. We visited by 2024Nov with day trip booked vi ctrip and quickly passed by several spots. unfortunately couldn't see famous stupa surrounding by snow.. This scenic spot has multiple curvy sections of road where people might easily get car sick. Prep meds before travel.
Betty J — Google review
Balakezong 巴拉克宗 is a must visit in Shangri La 香格里拉. The mountain peaks at 5,500 meters and it forms part of the Tibetan highland plateau. Entering this sacred Buddhism holy mountains brings a sense of awe. Beautiful and majestic. It takes about 5-6 hours to complete all the major shuttle bus stopovers - you cannot walk. It is an amazing place that will take your breath away. We hired a car for return journey. You can also take a public bus from Dukezong - no need private tour. Foreigners need passports to purchase tickets.
Basil C — Google review
We went to the canyon lured by the "hiking paths" on all the maps. Instead we paid (220 pp) for a bus that left shagri la 9:45 and then changed to another bus that drove us to a fake a** pagoda (completely fake) and when we asked where can we hike from we were laughed at by everybody. Turns out u have NO other option than to stay with the bus which covers 4 of the 10+ stops alond the park and gives u roughly 30m to 1 hour on each. Two are "Tibetan culture" - completely fake (honestly - they were still building the "1000 year old" village in which only personal lives!!!) And two include a walk on wooden frames built in the rock..... not for 1 meter can u actually not walk on paved road. If u miss your buss ure screwed. All buses are full and the guide counts the ppl before they leave. No info is available for the paths! The busses dont stop close to the trailheads. This was outrageous. I understand the hiking culture isnt strong in China but they made hiking impossible. To go to this amazing nature and not to be able to explore it is simply ridiculous imo!

Visited in end Dec 18. Well worth the visit especially at discounted prices (160RMB) during the off peak season in December. Views were absolutely beautiful from the peak! We spent so much time on top that they had to chase us down the mountain on the last cable cars.

Went in june hence no snow and it was a cloudy day so we can't see yulong snow mountain and haba mountain as show on top.. the entrance fee is much cheaper than yulong mountain..cable car is really slow so it takes close to 30mins to get to the top.. Go only if you have nothing to do

Some nice view if the weather is clear. Only cable car to the top. No walking around on the top, keep inside the ´fences´. You probably do not need the oxygen they are selling, because you will not move :) Plus is a great view and a chance to reach an altitude above sea level that you have to work for other places. Easy way to set. New personal hight ! Guess it is ok for a few hours, be prepared for an organized time.

It’s a beautiful stop from Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangri La not to be missed. The hike up to the viewing platform is easy and hence you don’t need the horse riding service. You can see the terraces with snowcap mountain at the backdrop. This place is a bit similar to Pamukkale in Turkey.

You can either come here from Shangrila or Lijiang. Entry fee is CNY30 at the point of writing. From the parking area you need to hike up & come back down from the other end. Drone shots will be able to capture the full scenery, otherwise pay the local guys to help you get the footage.

I’ll tell you this is a must visit place. Worth to visit! Ticket price is ¥30/person. But don’t ride the horse! Don’t ride the horse! They will charge you ¥60 at the beginning but as you walked in they will charge u only ¥20. But never mind it will not take too long to climb up the hill. Don’t forget There are 3 springs inside (most visitors only took pictures at exterior) The staff(native residents) introduced me the origin of the Springs and their culture. The spring is much beautiful than the pic I upload here guys

(Translated by Google) I have been traveling around the world for nearly 30 years, and this section of the Eastern Ring Road, wow, is probably the loneliest, most winding, and most beautiful section of mountain road I have ever driven in my life. I just drove slowly and carefully, not because of the road conditions. The road conditions were very good. Thanks to the weather, the mountains and forests along the way were beautiful and sparsely populated, which was almost unprecedented. But there was an unexplained burden in my heart, and I vaguely felt that this beautiful land of Shangri-La was really not allowed. Don't bother with any modern civilization. Located in Shangri-La County, China, the Shangri-La Resort offers upscale accommodation with modern rooms and suites. The hotel features three luxurious restaurants, an indoor pool, and a spa. Guests have praised the top-notch service provided by the friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is beautifully designed with dark wood interiors and warm lighting. Beautiful and spacious room, smells nice. Very friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast offers many choices, but lunch option is quite limited. Central location, close to museum, shops, restaurants. Walkable to Dukezong old town. Special thanks to Ms Becky who helped with the bookings, transport, and overall made the stay more convenient. Would love to come back.

Great service from Becky (who helped us with booking onward train tickets) and Rose from the front desk team; beautiful lobby. Rooms were good (rem to use the humidifiers), and oxygen room was appreciated. Restaurant food and service could be improved

I am writing this note to compliment one of the staffs by the name of Tom Tan. He is very attentive and patient. Upon knowing this is our 1st time visiting ShangriLa, he immediately address the matters that we may encounter with high altitude. He also show us around the hotel, the nice garden and the oxygen room. He is very resourceful, he explained in details about the old town and the restaurants in old town. He also helped to arrange the transport (courtesy of the hotel) that brought us to the airport. We are glad that he pay attention on very single small details. Indeed, with him, he made our stay at your hotel a memorable one.

Beautiful inside with dark wood and warm lights. Facilities such as fitness centre are well equipped and staffs are polite and helpful. I would like to personally thank a Chinese manager (I didn’t get his name) who took the extra mile to bring us to our room upon check in which is seamless and fast. Room is very clean and optimally designed, and i am lucky to have views of the mountain and overlooking some grand Tibetan buildings. Very satisfied.

Good hotel in Shangri-La. There is an oxygen room if you need it. The lighting in the rooms a bit dark though. Maybe intentional, but our tour guide suggested against copulation due to high altitude and low oxygen levels, hahaha. The 3D art installation in my room was made of cloth and is full of dust... my luggage lock spoiled and I requested help from a hotel staff. He was good and refused any tip.

I had a wonderful stay. Service is top notch - I was warmly welcomed by staff at the airport, everyone in the hotel I encountered was helpful and friendly. Room is clean and nicely decorated. It's a good 15-min walk from the old town. They arrange tour service which makes it easy for solo traveler like me to travel around the area. All of all I found my stay very satisfactory, and would recommend it if you would like to stay in a 5-star hotel in the town.

l was completely blown away by the unique flavor of the cheese pizza. The creamy cheese paired perfectly with the crispy crust, creating an irresistible dish. The staff were incredibly friendly and made me feel right at home. The special welcome with a silk scarf and a warm wish was truly memorable. I'm confident this will be a place I'll return to many times.

A welcome respite after a long week of local food (all good, but a taste of home is always welcome). Of five meals ordered by our party the best was by far the alfredo pasta with mushrooms. Ever so creamy and smooth with what felt and tasted like locally made noodles (wonderful) and tasty fungus. Next up would have to be a tie between the quesadilla with wonderfully caramelized onions and tender chicken or the chicken sandwich with just as tender a patty and fresh tomato and lettuce. The spaghetti with smoked ham was kept alive by the ham (amazing) while the balance was average, but tasty. Last on the list, the pizza. While the cheese and pepperoni were great the sauce and crust left a little to be desired (but seriously this is picking here as we are in Shangri-la...). The atmosphere was great, the decor was simple, the entire public face was spotless (not normal in China but somewhat more common here in Shangri-la), and the topper, the staff was GREAT!

Ganlanzhi Restaurant

Western restaurant
Ganlanzhi restaurant, also called Olive Bistro. Excellent cheese pizza and fresh baba ganush ! Good with diverse vegetarian options ! Lovely view over the pedestrian street : )
Basile V — Google review
I don't know about Ganlanzhu, but there's a restaurant called The Olive Bistro that serves Western & Chinese dishes. The owners don't speak English but the menu is in English and has vegan and vegetarian options. I came twice because after being sick in Dali, my body refused to let me eat Chinese food. The first night I ordered the vegetarian platter which came with hummus, baba ganoush, falafels, pita, a yoghurt dip, a garden salad and potato chips and sauce. Great variety and enough for 1 person. It was priced at a very reasonable 55 yuan and I thoroughly enjoyed the platter. The next night I ordered the vegetarian pizza, which tasted homemade in the best way possible. It was exactly what I needed. The restaurant has a huge second floor that overlooks the main street, so you can watch the night scene unfold in front of you. It isn't crowded so it's wonderful to relax and enjoy your meal in.

(Translated by Google) We didn't want Chinese food and we found it here. It's very comfortable to sit on the first floor and our bacon cheese yak burger with fries was really good. Western breakfast and some Arabic dishes are also available here. The eatery is now called The Olive Bistro (Original) Wir wollten mal kein chinesisches Essen und wurden hier fündig. Man sitzt sehr gemütlich im ersten Stock und unser Bacon-Cheese-Yak-Burger mit Pommes war wirklich gelungen. Es gibt hier auch westliches Frühstück und einige arabische Speisen. Das Lokal heißt jetzt The Olive Bistro

(Translated by Google) Highly recommended, the food is excellent. We went back twice, exactly what we needed for a break from Chinese cuisine. It's a real pleasure to eat dishes that aren't swimming in oil. Go for it! (Original) On recommande +++ , nourriture excellente, on y est retourné 2 fois, exactement ce dont on avait besoin pour faire une pause avec la gastronomie chinoise. Unique and Beautiful Airport in Shangri-La
Eddy N — Google review
Small and clean airport with typical Tibetan-style decorations. Outside the airport you can see beautiful scenery such as clouds, mountains and snow.
Tuyet T — Google review
Lacks any luggage storage facilities. Neither the guards nor the reception would let us store our bags for the day, very unhelpful staff. Pity because the airport itself is beautiful.
Noah B — Google review
Small and clean airport. The winds here are strong between 1pm and 7pm every day so if you have a flight arriving during that time, it may be cancelled or diverted
