Id Kah Mosque

Mosque
Nestled in the heart of Kashgar, the Id Kah Mosque stands as a magnificent testament to Islamic architecture and culture. This grand mosque, built in 1442 by the local king, is not only China's largest but also a vibrant hub for worshippers, accommodating over 20,000 people within its expansive lecture hall.
Built in 1442, largest mosque in Xinjiang and it is located in the centre of Kashgar Old City.
Andy L — Google review
The mosque is beautiful and it's located within old Kashgar city. To enter as a visitor, you need to wait approximately 30 minutes for passport verification, and you need to buy tickets. As for prayers, we don't know much, when we visited it was not prayer time, and it was only open for tourism. Contrarily to what other reviews say, nothing suggests it's prohibited to pray, there's no sign clearly stating it, however we didn't hear any adhan during our stay in Kashgar/Kashi.
Salvatore S — Google review
Kashgar is good city for tourists, As a Muslim i visited KashyJamia Masjid, But Xinjiang and local government didn't given permission to me for prayer in this grand masjid. I am very disappointed by local government.
Abdul M — Google review
Currently Id Kah Mosque is used as a tourist place. Entry fee 30 RMB. Prayer not allowed inside and entry restricted in prayer time. Outside have open square and beside the mosque have so many shops and restaurant.
Zakir H — Google review
Id Kah Mosque, while historically significant, is overshadowed by its current state as a tourist attraction rather than a genuine place of worship. The mosque's transformation into a spectacle for visitors detracts from its spiritual essence, making it feel more like a museum than a sacred site. Additionally, reports of government surveillance and restrictions on religious practices create an unsettling atmosphere. The removal of Quranic plaques and the staging of prayer scenes for tourists further illustrate the mosque's compromised integrity.
Yamine B — Google review
An old mosque at the centre of Kashgar old town. The unmistakable orange facade stands at the end of the busy plaza. Entrance fee: 30/15 or free for anyone, local/foreign, whose age is 65 or above. The courtyard is surprisngly spacioys and green, with trees-lined walkways. The green-colored prayer hall is located atvthe end of the couryard. It features a main hall, which isn't that big, and a larger open-aired side hall.
KH W — Google review
Impressive Foto Point 3302m over the Lake. There is a parking nearby.
Andreas W — Google review
The exterior is nice, but going inside is not very interesting or beautiful. Afaq Khoja Mausoleum is much nicer with a lot to see around it. It's a gorgeous building. Definitely worth seeing.

A Journey Through Time Kashgar Old City is an incredible destination that feels like stepping into a living museum. The ancient streets, bustling bazaars, and traditional Uyghur architecture are breathtaking. Wandering through the labyrinth of alleyways, you’ll find artisan workshops, vibrant street food vendors, and welcoming locals eager to share their culture. The atmosphere is magical, especially during sunset when the golden light illuminates the earthen buildings. Don’t miss trying freshly baked naan and exploring the local handicrafts. It's a photographer's dream and a cultural experience that stays with you long after you leave. Highly recommend taking a guided tour to fully appreciate the rich history and significance of this unique place. A must-visit if you're in Xinjiang!
Zakir H — Google review
Traditional part of Kashgar. The City Wall had been built around 1790-1795. The inner part of the City is full of traditional shops.
Andreas W — Google review
Lovely and cultured place. A place to eat, shop and shoot lots of photos. Remember to drop by the newly rehabilitated "original" old Kashgar city opposite of the East gate.
Boon L — Google review
While it's fascinating-see videos, it's a pity that it has been rebuilt resembling a Disney park. Visit now when you will still be able to walk through numerous bazaars and see a vibrant community. To bear in mind: there are both clean, free toilets and ATM that work with international cards. Most of the shops sell souvenirs. This is not the ideal place to show in China for manufactured products. The handmade knives are both great and a bargain, but the Chinese Post Office will not mail it overseas.

Modern version of Kashgar full of food vendors, garishly decorated facades and millions of Chinese tourists. I do not think it has any resemblance of what old Kashgar actually looks like.

Kashgar, also known as Kashi, is a city located in the Tarim Basin region of southern Xinjiang, China, bordering Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan ¹. This ancient city has been a crucial oasis on the Silk Road for over 2,000 years, connecting China, the Middle East, and Europe. With a rich history spanning thousands of years, Kashgar is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally. *Key Facts about Kashgar:* - *Population:* Approximately 711,300 people as of 2019 ¹ - *Urban Area:* 15 km² (5.8 sq mi) ¹ - *Administrative Area:* 555 km² (214 sq mi) ¹ - *Strategic Importance:* Oasis on the Silk Road, connecting East and West ¹ - *Historical Significance:* Over 2,000 years of continuous habitation ¹ Kashgar's unique location has made it a convergence point of various cultures and empires, including Chinese, Turkic, Mongol, and Tibetan influences. Today, it remains an important city in western China, with a special economic zone designation since 2010.

Exploring Kashgar Old City is a delightful experience, as it has largely escaped the destruction seen in many other Chinese cities during Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. The city exudes a distinct Middle Eastern cultural influence, offering not only enjoyable moments but also a glimpse into a unique heritage. As we appreciate the local cuisine and vibrant atmosphere, there's a shared hope that the residents won't face hardships akin to the historical events, such as the Sichuan Massacre in 1960.

Kashgar Old City is a captivating ancient neighborhood with over 2,000 years of history. Its maze-like layout features narrow alleys flanked by traditional mud-brick houses adorned with Islamic and Uyghur designs. The locals embellish their homes with intricate floral patterns and domes, while the alleys are paved with variously shaped bricks that serve as directional markers for visitors. This historic area holds a special place in the hearts of the Uyghur people in Kashgar.
delightful experience you will have a lot of fun. There are some clean toilets, free, and ATM cash machines that accept international cards. It’s a lot of fun, particularly in the evening see videos.

The old city is beautiful and conveniently located close to the business and commercial precinct. There are plenty of small, narrow streets to walk through and experience what living was like there. There's the usual strips of vendors inside where you can find anything that you fancy: try the freshly squeezed pomegranate juice. Surprisingly, there's an elevated strip of bars where you can buy food, liquid refreshments, and listen to live performers. We found some hidden gems offering accommodation within the old city that are less hotel/BnB and more exquisite works of art.

Kashgar Old City - Where the Soul of Kashgar Lies I Love this place. The Ancient City of Kashgar is classified as an AAAAA site, which means it's one of China's best places to visit. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism Kashgar Old City (喀什老城), or Kashgar Ancient City, is located in the center of Kashgar, covering an area of 4.25 square kilometers, with about 126800 residents. Presenting a vivid picture of Xinjiang Uygur folk customs, it is said that the soul of Kashgar lies in Kashgar Old City. It represents the ancient past and peaceful present of the city. The ancient city of Kashgar, formerly known as Shule, has a history of more than 2000 years. Local residences and shops line along the crisscross streets, forming the only labyrinth-like urban blocks characterized in Islamic culture in China. Now it is a AAAAA tourist site and a must-see in Kashgar. Wandering Through the Crisscross Lanes & Immersing in Local Atmosphere Kashgar Old City is about 2 km in length and width with many streets and alleys you can walk at will. Most of the buildings in the old city have been renovated but the local features have been retained. The colorful walls, round arches, beautifully designed door and windows offer perfect background for your picture. In addition to the architecture, many characteristic shops on the streets are also worth a visit. Almost every street in the old city has its own theme, which is called bazaars (means “market” in Uygur). There is Cantuman Bazaar (Blacksmith Street), Dopa Bazaar (Flower & Hat Street), Flowerpot Bazaar, Handicraft Bazaar, Pottery Bazaar, etc. There are also vendors of special snacks such as grapes, Nang (staple food of the Uygur and Kazak nationalities), and goat milk ice cream that you can have a try when shopping. Some residences are available to visit. You can see what it is like inside the typical local house but usually you need to buy some products sold there. In the streets of the old city, the elderly people are basking in the sun and the children are playing around, which makes people unconsciously want to stay and linger a little longer. Opening Hours: All day Tickets: Free (CNY 45 to Id Kah Mosque) Address: No. 10 Yawage Road, Kashgar City 喀什地区喀什市亚瓦格路10号

Kashgar is an amazing place still despite all the work that has been done in changing the city's shape. The Uyghur vibe is still alive and it feels like a breath of fresh air in the desert! The colours, the mood, the food, everything is beautiful here!

Nuran is a gem in Kashgar that you simply cannot miss. This spacious and beautifully designed restaurant boasts intricate carvings on its walls and ceilings, creating an inviting atmosphere for diners. The menu features delicious dishes at reasonable prices, with highlights like the chicken plate costing under $10. Visitors can enjoy their meals while soaking in the local culture, as many patrons take their time to savor long conversations over food. Although there’s Wi-Fi available, it may not always be reliable according to staff feedback.
Absolutely excellent. A must visit in Kashgar. The facilities are impressive-see video. The food is very good and the chiken plate I ordered (see photo) was less than $10. The Apak Khoja complex in Kashgar is a renowned tourist attraction featuring intricate tile designs covering its 17th-century Islamic tomb complex, lecture hall (madrasa), mosque, and Princess Xiang Fei (lparhan/Nur Ela Nurhan) Memorial. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the 17th century when Uighur masses and Han Chinese administrators built bridges to establish mutually beneficial long-term relationships and coexistence.

Only a monument Not a mausoleum. Saw many Turkish and Mongol languages inscribed and their culture preserved for more than a thousand years. The Uigher and Hui muslimes are exemplary. I had full access to the largest mosque in China. Impressed with their humanity and sincerety. Good to visit this mausoleum and Kashgar bazaar. Both historical, and culturally rich. Didn't see any Uigher genocide, concentration camps, religious curtailment, or cotton forced labour. I travelled the length and breadth of Xinjiang for 16 days.

Original adobe of the locals, Some buildings are made if mud / straw bricks. It's authenctic. Unfortunately the residents have been moved out, in the name of development I presume. A horde if commercial entities moved in. It's business! Only a limited section if the area is open and they may be less than 20 business entities are running: cafe, souvenirs, arts. There is live music performance by a trio of local musucians at the small square on the end as you walk up. Still worth spending 30 minutes wondering, a side trip after wondering through the rumbling ancient city across the street. It's free.

(Translated by Google) Gaotai old city. In fact, I didn't know that there was another old city in Kashgar. I saw it from the car window. Well, the surprise was pleasant. Don't be lazy, find a cafe that has an exit to the roof - there will be a cool view of the first old city, the tower, the wheel, the lush park. Judging by the calendars in the destroyed apartments, people lived there at the beginning of our century. In some ways, the city reminded me of Uzbek Khiva, if all the mosques, minarets, mausoleums and madrassas were removed from it. There is still a lot of restoration work, but when everything is ready, Kashgar will have another full-fledged world-class tourist site (Original) Gaotai old city.

The ruins are home to a variety of shops, including souvenir shops and souvenir shops, making it a great place to take a stroll after visiting Kas Fortress. The area is relatively small, so it took about 30 minutes. This listing is out of date. The Bazaar was demolished. See photos below, and the new one that seems under construction. Visit the Sunday Animals Market to see some shops working there.

Worth to walk around. but please don buy anything there, not tourist friendly (for some stall maybe).

(Translated by Google) There was a signboard, but it is now on a ruined site, so it is no longer there. When I asked people nearby, were they relocating? It seems that there is a bazaar in another location, and if you walk a little further with the old castle behind you, you will find it on the same sidewalk side (to your right). I went on Sunday, and was it Silk? cloth? It was interesting to see that it was crowded with mostly Uyghur people selling clothes (including student jerseys) and shoes.
