Historic Sites
The Priamar Fortress, a medieval stone fortress and former prison constructed in 1542, is a significant historical site in Savona. It now houses the Archaeological Museum of Savona and offers guided tours. The fortress overlooks the sea and provides stunning views of the coastline and the city. Inside, visitors can explore the Sandro Pertini and Renata Cuneo Museum, showcasing artistic collections donated by prominent Savona citizens.
One of the most interesting spots in Savona and surprisingly free to visit. The fortress is beautifully located on a hill that has been the heart of the city since the Bronze Age. There is also an archaeological museum inside, although it was closed when I visited. The place feels raw and austere which actually gives it a lot of charm. You can walk through the interior, explore the rooftop terraces and climb the ramparts for stunning views of the sea, the city and the mountains. Definitely worth seeing if you are in Savona.

I have always been a fan of castles and fortresses and I won't miss the chance to visit this one! You could enter the fortress without having to pay except for the museums and the current film viewing at night. At the top you could see the cityskyline and the sea! We went to one of the museums and the entrance costs 5 eur (entire price) or 3 eur (discounted price) per head. The receptionist is accomodating and well-informed of the things showcased inside the museum.

When we arrived in Savona, we did not expect to see such a wonderful fortress, an incredibly beautiful place for a walk. Entrance is free. Despite the fact that the fortress has a toilet in its corners, it sometimes stinks of urine, which is disappointing but does not spoil the impression.

This place is too touristy and "trampled" to be a good place for tourists to visit. But, if you love old castles and everything connected with them, you can certainly visit it. From the top there is a good view of the city and port.

A neat place and easily reached frim anywhere in Savona. Not crowded, so you really get to enjoy the fortress and its views. Always astonishing to see something this old yet in such good conditions. Respect to the keepers here. The view over the town, the Sea and the beach is just beautiful.

Torre Brandale stands proudly in the heart of Savona, offering a glimpse into the city's rich history. This medieval tower, constructed around the 11th century, was once one of the most significant structures in Savona. Over time, it underwent various modifications after being acquired by the municipality in the early 14th century; notably, its bell was added and its height reduced by over 20 meters.
Nice place..

The tower’s view will be the best from “Fortezza del Priamar”. You will see a triplet of three vertical columns from the fort. Near view is not that good and will not give you the good historical essence of these towers

Cappella Sistina in Savona is a stunning attraction that has undergone renovation in the Rococo style, featuring ornate decorations and a ceiling painted by Paolo Geralamo Brusco. The carved wooden choir seats and elegant cloister garden are also worth marveling at. Visitors have found the tour to be well worth the small charge, making it a must-visit for those interested in beautiful architecture and an enriching atmosphere.
We thought this was closed when we checked Google, so took a walk down anyway and it was open. Only a couple of euro, very peaceful Chapel. It's small, so don't think it's on the scale too the Rome Sistine chapel, but very quiet and calming. Take time to just sit and take in the frescos

Specialty Museums
The Museo della Ceramica di Savona is a stately museum housed in a medieval building that offers an intricate history of ceramic art through various exhibits. The collection features mostly terracotta ceramics from the XIV-XVII centuries, with cobalt and cobalt-ochre designs used for noble kitchenware. Additionally, there are some unique pieces of wall paintings and marble frescos on canvas.
A great exposition of rare and precious examples of the evolution in ceramics from middle ages to nowadays! Make sure to watch the film as an introduction to your visit!

Apparently, the museum is open this night ('notti bianche'), so it's closed during daytime. This is hearsay, nothing is indicated on the building or information. Join the club of disappointed tourists in front of the building! Museum staff: please place a sign with information, do not disappoint and disrespect your customers like this.

This museum is a gem and warrants a trip to Savona on its own. The mix of ceramics from hundreds of years ago with artefacts by contemporary artists is ideal. The collection is not overbearing and allows for a delightful stroll lasting an hour or more. The staff of the museum shines with kindness and the shop offers a small range of nice little things to buy.

Museo a-la Provinceale. Small, but well worth of visiting. Paitings and marble works. Dated XIV-XVII, I have noticed few works not typical like marble frescos and wall paintings that were translocated to canvas. Ceramics is represented mostly by terracotta with cobalt and cobalt-ochre (I am not a specialist) kitchenette of nobles. But there are some other outstanding pieces of art, too

We got this amazing restaurant recommended by a friend. And it was the perfect evening for us. We had a personal welcome and through the complete evening an excellent service. If you are in this restaurant, you will know it is not only Carlo, it's all the staff brining their passion into this place and giving you an outstanding experience. We had the private room in the wine cellar. This makes the experience even more extraordinary. The service was always around and helped us to find the right choice on the italian menu. But they were never obtrusive. The food was varied and you feel the love the kitchen brings into each and every meal they serve. So we can strongly recommended to visit Carlo and his team if you are looking for an outstanding evening in Savona. Thanks again to the full team for your efforts!

Vino e Farinata

Restaurant
Vino e Farinata is a modest and minimalist establishment known for its excellent quality and flavors. The local specialties, such as the farinata and panissa, are cooked to perfection in a wood oven. These savory dishes can be enjoyed plain or with various toppings like onion or gorgonzola. The menu may be limited, but the generous portions ensure satisfaction. Notably, the restaurant excels in its freshly made roasted peppers, prepared on-site.
This place is an experience of its own. I just wanted a slice of farinata to go but they would only serve me a "portion" (about 5 slices for 5€) though initially it was not what I wanted it was great choice because the farinata not only was freshly baked, it was also very tasty. An alder woman came outside to hand us some napkins as she sow us devouring the farinata in the street next to our bikes, a small but very thoughtful gesture. I would love to come back and try other dishes they have, the inside was pretty full and the ambience seemed very friendly and familiar.
Patricio C — Google review
I can't stand it when the waiters aren't wearing white. If you wait tables, you must wear a white shirt. Aside from that, they are somewhat rude, but I guess this is a common trait among people in the Liguria region. Another negative point is the house wine. I dislike this sort of scam where they sell bottled house wine in 33cl bottles; that is a contradiction. House wine shouldn't be bottled. I assume they do this to squeeze every Euro possible out of you. The price is 5€ for the small bottle, meaning 15€ per liter, I find this unacceptable. This place is renowned for a local delicacy called "farinata," a type of pie made with chickpeas and baked in the oven. It's delicious and worth a try. I also ordered "vitello tonnato", a unique Italian roastbeef dish with a creamy sauce, but it was less than average—probably a leftover, something that nobody would order at this place. Overall, try this place if you want to experience local food. They have an extensive menu, not only farinata. Service and attitude could be better.
Freddi A — Google review
Lovely little place to eat farinata. We got this suggestion from Italian friends and they were so right! Easy to walk by if you don’t know this restaurant. But please go in and try! We had the chickpea and normal version. Both delicious

Incredible farinata with classia Italian vibes and a laid back feel. Good wine, fish, and pastas but do not leave without getting the farinata!
Joe A — Google review
If you want to taste the most typical dish in Savona, don't hesitate to go to this place. We took plain farinata, frisceu and farinata with onions and stracchino, delicious. Prices lower than expected, with espresso and beverages we spent 15 € each.
Max M — Google review
Delicious! From outside does look like a small shop, but is bigger then you think and a typical place with very good farinata
Marco N — Google review
Simple and spartan in its interior but certainly not for quality and taste. I enjoyed every bite of this local tradition, the farinata and panissa (respectively a wood oven cooked savory chickpea cake - which here is served also in its barley version - and a fried version). They can serve you plain, or topped with different things, from onion to gorgonzola. Choice is limited, and I'd say it's good because otherwise there would be a need of some assist to get out from the place since the portion are very generous. The best part are the roasted peppers, cooked in the oven and done at the moment. Covid19 related, this is the very first restaurant since this whole story started that I've seen fully respecting the rules.

The tuna steak I had was the freshest and most delicate I’ve ever tasted. The menu beautifully showcases Ligurian ingredients, with a unique twist from Spanish influences thanks to Monica, the owner and chef. The service was very professional, and the atmosphere is effortlessly chic—authentic Italian style. Whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended!

Il locale è molto particolare e tipico, arredato molto bene. C'è una pecca: molta polvere in giro, anche sui portacandele in tavola e i bagni sono pieni di ragnatele.

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Port of Savona, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Santuario Di Nostra Signora Di Misericordia. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

The Port of Savona, also known as Porto di Savona in Italian, is a bustling port in Italy that serves as a major ferry terminal and home port for Costa Cruises. Nestled next to the historic center of Savona, the port offers stunning views of the city's landmarks, including the fish market and charming alfresco cafes.
Good port, generally used as base for Costa cruises for departures around the Med. Good transport links in with multiple airports within a couple hour Train journey to the port (Genoa being the closest but not always cheapest). The toen itself is a typical medditeranean town with plenty of nice streets and things to see although really you are only using it as a staging point for the cruise.

Cruise port for out Costa cruise. Traffic was heavy here trying to get to the dropoff point by taxi. There were two cruise loading new passengers. May have been faster to walk in. There has to be a more efficient way to get people to the terminal!
Brian C — Google review
Lovely port and easy to access. The port itself is not large, but the cruise terminal is superb and very modern. There is an upper floor with balconies on each side looking in every direction, together with a cafe linking to an outside decking area looking over the port. Staff are very helpful and organised. The taxi was able to drop us directly outside the main entrance.

Beautiful Port 👍 Port of Savona (Italian: Porto di Savona) is a port in Savona, Italy. It is the fourth cruise port by number of passengers in Italy, with 1,300,000 people in 2013. Adjacent to the historic centre of Savona, the port of Savona has been active from the Middle Ages and has always been crucial for the economy of the regional capital and its hinterland. A major terminal for ferries, there are ferry links to Corsica and Sardinia through the companies Corsica Ferries and Saremar. 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

We embarked at this port. We had a wonderful experience in the cruise. Enjoyed all the 3 days we stayed there. Food was good. Entertainment was reasonable & other facilities like our room stay was comfortable. During halts we could disembark the ship & fix up the tour of the city where ever the halt occurred. We are very happy.

Personally, it was really amazing to experience the history of Apple. Most of the computers was switched on and functional even after many decades of aging. There was even the Apple 3 with the console demonstration from the 80's, that means you can write code on a 38 year old computer that still works! Best experience and display of technology. Would visit again.

Absolutely fascinating to find this museum. It's a great place to see (we came in right next to it from the cruise ship port) - especially if you're a fan of Apple (products, history, brand) or Steve Jobs. It's so unusual but also unique. Very fun to look at and play with the computers/pieces. The only thing we wished was that they had a better merch store/gift shop. We would have loved to get a souvenir but the tshirts and mugs were not great. Overall we loved it and would recommend!

Nice and small museum for when you're nearby and a lover of Apple or of history. There are actual old computers you can try out, not too many though, and there's an app for both Android and iPhone, but it didn't work on both of my androids unfortunately. It's a little difficult working with the compulsory gloves and all.

A truly amazingly museum both for an Apple-lover and for any fan of computer history. Almost all of the systems on display (including classics like Apple II and rarities like Apple Pippin) are turned on and can be interacted with. Right next to the cruise terminal.

Named after the renowned explorer Leon Pancaldo, it holds historical significance as one of the city's symbols. The tower offers a glimpse into Savona's past and its ties to explorers like Magellan and Columbus.
The tower on the old port (now yachtclub and terminal for cruise ships) Impressive view when the cruise ships dock-enter-leave the port. The yachtclub and port also offers great places for lunch-dinner or just coffee

Great large Coop, some good cheap household shops (Kasanova) that help you finish anything for your holidays, books, photos, and a number of pretty good clothes shops. Ah, and a couple of jewellery shops, of you're so inclined. The food offering is decent, too if you need a bite. The WiFi is terrible and complicated, though, I couldn't get it to connect. Santuario Di Nostra Signora Di Misericordia is a marian sanctuary located in the Santuario area of Savona. It houses significant baroque works by Borgianni, Domenichino, and Bernardo Castello, as well as an altar by Bernini. The basilica was built on the site where Our Lady of Mercy appeared to Antonio Botta in 1536.
A truly special Christmas Eve experience! I attended Christmas Eve Mass at Santuario Savona on 25.12.2024, and it was incredibly moving. The church itself is breathtaking, with beautiful architecture and a serene atmosphere. The service was deeply meaningful, and the choir was truly exceptional. Important Note: Be aware that bus service may be limited on holidays like Christmas. If you're in the Savona area, I highly recommend visiting Santuario Savona. It's a place of peace and tranquility that will stay with you long after you leave.

(Translated by Google) It is located in the Santuario area, a hamlet of Savona, which grew up around the basilica built on the site of the apparition of Our Lady of Mercy to a farmer named Antonio Botta, which according to tradition occurred on 18 March 1536. On 17 May 2008 the sanctuary received a visit from Pope Benedict XVI, on the occasion of the pontiff's pastoral trip to Savona and Genoa. The last pontiff who stopped at the sanctuary was Pius VII in 1815 when he crowned the effigy of Our Lady of Mercy, patron saint of Savona. Pope Benedict XVI instead awarded the sanctuary the honor of the Golden Rose, (delivered to sovereigns, foreign states or indeed to sanctuaries as a sign of special distinction) the second in Italy after the Loreto sanctuary, awarded by Pope John Paul II. The structure is built on three levels: nave, crypt and presbytery. The façade, in Finale stone, has three doors and is the work of Taddeo Carlone from Rovio di Lugano. The statues of Saint John the Baptist, Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist and the Virgin (above the central door) are placed in three niches. In the crypt there is the statue of the Madonna della Misericordia, crowned by Pope Pius VII. Captured by Napoleon he was taken to Savona in captivity. Here he made a vow to the Madonna that if he were freed, he would return to the sanctuary to crown her. This is what happened in 1815 after being freed from his imprisonment which began in 1809 and lasted until 1814. In the square in front of the church there is a fountain with multiple water jets by Giacomo Antonio Ponsonelli from 1708. The sanctuary has a Treasure Museum, where you can admire ex votos from various eras, vestments and sacred objects, including a Reliquary of the Cross in gilded silver by the eighteenth-century Turin goldsmith Vincenzo Belli.

(Translated by Google) Since it is the sanctuary of a big city I imagined it to be bigger, while in reality it looks more like a nice village church. The churchyard in front of the entrance is particular, with a marble fountain. The interior of the church is very beautiful, and is characterized by the altar in an elevated position (surrounded by ancient wooden seats for the choir) and by a beautiful crypt under the altar, where a very strong spirituality is perceived. It would be useful if there was a sign indicating the times of masses and also if the confessionals guaranteed a minimum of privacy to those who want to confess (they are all open and immediately behind the benches and chairs).

Unfortunately, I just discovered that those arriving by train cannot attend Mass (from Bologna) during the week, and the times on Saturday and Sunday are not feasible. I'm very sorry. I also read that it won't be possible to visit Palazzo Azzarie... we'll see how it goes. Update. I went. I also attended Mass at 5:00 PM, then walked to the station, which is very close. I've never been to a town like this; it's definitely unique. It reminds me of Lourdes, with the mountains so close by and thus a typical microclimate... it's a shame it's a town with no supplies these days. It's not a tourist town, but a dormitory... there's not even a grocery store anymore... a tip: enter the sanctuary chapel barefoot and prostrate yourself face down. ❤️ Praise be to Jesus Christ ❤️ P.S. Since there's no way to buy anything there, the church asks for something for infants. Bring it from home and leave it in the basket.

McDonald's is a well-known and established fast-food chain famous for its burgers and fries. In Ireland, their menu differs slightly, offering Caffe and patisseries as new additions. However, the service at this particular location is subpar, with multiple mistakes made even within a single day. Additionally, the cleanliness of the toilets leaves much to be desired. Despite these shortcomings, during busy times there are efforts made to maintain hygiene and order while ensuring social distancing.
Food well prepared, friendly personnel. From several MacDonald's restaurants that I visited, made the difference for the positive. Keep up the good work :)

Slowest Mc Donalds I've ever seen. We went here on the way to our Airbnb and I am waiting for 35 minutes to get my meal. I thought this was fast food. But I don't think you can call it lile this when most of the restaurants are faster. The colleagues don't seem to worry about me sitting there with my order plate waiting for my food.

The salad and dressing weren’t very tasty. I usually enjoy McDonald’s Caesar salad, but it seems it’s not available in Italy. We stopped at this location a few times, and it’s usually overcrowded — it can be difficult to find a table for four. Also, there’s no safe pedestrian entrance from the parking lot, which is inconvenient.

It was a perfect experience with my family we would surely come here every holidays

Good atmosphere at most times of the day, and very friendly staff. The food is what it is, but better than many other McDonald's stores.

Worst customer service I have ever experienced. Place is filthy, unhygienic, and I wouldn’t go back!
John G — Google review
The worst place on earth. Discusting hygiene. Horrible rude filthy staff. Avoid at all costs.

Always busy not the best location.

Seafood restaurant
Restaurant
Blue Restaurant, situated adjacent to the Savona yacht harbor, offers a quintessential representation of authentic Italian cuisine featuring both meat and seafood dishes. The delectable food samples include a delightful combination of flavors, accompanied by locally brewed beer and served alongside an exquisite panoramic vista. However, it is important to note that the prices at this establishment are relatively steep.
Located next to Savona yacht marina, this restaurant represents typical Italian cuisine both meat and seafood. Food I tried was delicious, it was accompanied with local freshly brewed beer and topped with a marvelous view. Prices are high, be ready.

Nice people Great service and fish second to none. Well worth a visit.

Great food! I had the ravioli with seafood filling shown in the image and grilled seafood. The price is on the higher side, however the boat views in the outdoor seating and courteous staff is well-worth it. Recommended!

Great food, great location. A little bit pricey maybe - but worth it considering the quality of the food!

Food is good, fresh fish, good service. It can get very expensive quickly so watch out!
