Sokhumi Botanical Garden, established in 1840, is a stunning collection of diverse tropical plants. The garden is renowned for its monkey nursery and the nearby Guma station building, which serves as an architectural monument. Visitors to Sokhumi can explore various attractions such as the arboretum, monkey nursery, State Museum, and art gallery. The botanical garden boasts a wide array of exotic plants and features a more than 500-year-old tree.
I highly recommend this place if you like plants or just to take a stroll on a hot, sunny afternoon.

The Sukhumi Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city. Here you can see rare plants from all over the world, stroll along shaded alleys, and enjoy the freshness of greenery. The atmosphere is serene, filled with birdsong and the rustling of leaves. The ancient trees and exotic flowers are especially impressive, creating the feeling of traveling through different parts of the world. It’s a perfect place for family walks, photo sessions, and escaping the city bustle.

Sukhumi Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Caucasus. It was founded in 1840 as Sukhum-Kale Military-Botanical Garden by the head of the Russian Black Sea fortification line N. N. Rayevsky with the purpose of the introduction of new plants in the region (particularly tea and citrus fruits). It was ravaged by Turkish forces in 1853-55 and 1877-78 in the course of the Russo-Turkish wars. The garden was transferred to civil authorities in 1889 and the restoration of the plantings was begun in 1894.

Great open outdoors botanical garden, with wide variety of plantsbfrom all over the world. The oldest tree is more than 500 years old. They renovated the park, so it is noce to walk there and enjoy good weather.

Every where i find a botanical garden I visit it. This one is quite small but is beautifully arranged, well managed and documented. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Sokhumi
Philipp M — Google review
Quite small and expensive relative to other botanical gardens. It has some nice parts but it is not worth the price
Doc — Google review
While the garden is not that large, it's still nice and there is a really old tree in the center, and when I say old, I mean really, really old! If you are in Sukhumi and got some free hour just get there)

Sokhumi Monkey Nursery

Zoo
Nestled near a beautiful garden, the Sokhumi Monkey Nursery is not just a delightful attraction but also serves as an important research center that has significantly contributed to scientific advancements in primate studies. This unique facility houses various monkey species and provides visitors with an educational experience focused on primate conservation efforts. While exploring the nursery, you can engage with these fascinating creatures and learn about their habitats and behaviors.
Nice monkey bro

(Translated by Google) I was left with a deep, painful impression, because I feel very sorry for the unfortunate monkeys ((( They are fed very poorly, because we took special food and of course fed them. Very dirty cages, WITHOUT roofs or any amenities for monkeys - no imitation trees, no shelters or entertainment for the poor animals ((( A sad picture - we were still in New York, it was raining, they were all wet and many were sick or weak, along with the cubs. For children this is probably an interesting place, but for adults it is a difficult picture.

(Translated by Google) I do not recommend this place to visit for impressionable people, as well as for real animal lovers! A very difficult sight. There is nothing left of the nursery that was there before the war (we saw archival photos), the monkeys are kept in small cages with nothing in them! There is not even a container of water in this heat, the poor animals suck on the tubes through which water is released, as we understand, if necessary, to drive them inside. Everyone is hungry, stretching their arms in the hope of getting a treat, tearing up the grass they can reach and eating it... By the way, at the entrance you can buy a treat for them: a small package for 200 rubles. The delicacies are packaged not assorted, but with the same type of treats - the goal is PROFIT, the saleswoman offers everyone to take 2 packages, since supposedly she does not know what exactly the monkeys will eat from this: cucumbers or boiled corn (they like corn more by the way). No information signs other than the name of the monkey species and its habitat. And by the way, they could tell the story and purpose of creating the nursery... but who wants to talk about it... they read it later themselves and were horrified. At least they could give them some toys, make a swing... the poor doomed animals, who are destined to die there, don’t see anything... a terrible aftertaste remains. But we knew where we were going. Children, who for the most part do not think about all this, like to feed the monkeys there, watch them, especially very young ones... We read that experiments are carried out on them 😭 most of them can see numbers stamped on their bodies... it’s terrible! At the checkout, of course, they lament that it is difficult to restore what was destroyed by the war, but the impression was that no one is interested in this, there is not even basic care for animals... the smell is very unpleasant... Don’t go there 👎 even a local woman dissuaded us from visiting, she said that she had been there once and would never go there again and would not take her children there!

(Translated by Google) This place evokes mixed emotions, probably more sorry for the monkeys than interesting. They all sit with their hands outstretched, although many have enough food on the floor, perhaps just a habit of begging. At the entrance they sell bags of food: bananas, cucumbers, etc., it is better to leave this food in the very last cells on the right, there are a lot of monkeys there and few people reach them with food. The nature and atmosphere are certainly pleasing, but the smell is terrible... There are a lot of monkeys in number, but not enough in species, almost all of them are the same. Children love it there; it’s interesting to watch the life of monkeys. I don’t recommend taking photos close, they grab your hands and can knock your phone out. The three-story building, in which monkeys sit on all floors, is somewhat confusing; it is simply impossible to throw treats to the top floors. There is a small parking lot. Entrance 400 rubles.

(Translated by Google) There are no places to sit while children feed the monkeys. Entrance in March 2023 400 rub. At the entrance they sell food for 100 rubles. (but it’s not enough, so you can stock up on dried fruits, seeds, nuts, sliced apples in advance and add them to the bag of food) there are a lot of monkeys, it’s better to go straight to the farthest ones at the entrance to the right at the end, there the monkeys are very hungry and are waiting for any food. There are aggressive monkeys, you need to be careful when feeding them.

The territory is small, there are few varieties. It's okay for one visit, we won't go there again. (Translated by Google) We were there in May 2025. The sight is not for the faint of heart. The monkeys are kept in poor conditions, I feel very sorry for them. In my presence, they took one monkey, then put it in a cage, and took blood from its arm (paw). Perhaps the experiments are continuing. Anyway, monkeys should not be kept in such conditions! (Translated by Google) The most remarkable thing about this place is the walk up the picturesque stairs. After the rain you can feel like you are in a real jungle. I feel sorry for the monkeys. There are many enclosures, a monument in the center. Perhaps this was once a decent place at an institute that studied diseases and carried out experiments. Now they are dirty cages, nervous monkeys that pull handles through the bars. The children were interested in feeding the monkeys. There are signs everywhere that feeding is prohibited and there is a fine for food not purchased on the territory of the “institute”. At the bottom of the stairs, taxis offer to take you upstairs for 100 rubles. Above taxi 250 in the city. We went up and down ourselves and took a taxi for 100 rubles to the hotel.

Museum
The Abkhazian State Museum stands as a cultural gem in the heart of Abkhazia, offering visitors an immersive journey through the region's rich history and vibrant life. This museum is not just a collection of artifacts; it’s a well-curated experience that spans from prehistoric times to contemporary events. The exhibits are meticulously maintained, providing a clean and inviting atmosphere for exploration.
Friendly employees. They can answer your questions about the natural history of Abkhazia and its natural wonders. Abkhazians are an ancient indigenous people of the Caucasus with a unique culture and unique language.

In this museum the visitors might discover the history of Abkhazia. The museum is small but comprises all the historical eras from the prehistory to the modern times. Everything is written in Russian, therefore if a tourist doesn't master the language might have a problem to understand what he/she is looking. By the way, it is an interesting place to visit for those who want to know more about the country.

(Translated by Google) The most interesting place in the city and very atmospheric. The main museum of the city, where the history of Abkhazia from the prehistoric era to the present day is presented. You can wander and look at everything yourself, or you can come at 4 pm and, if a group of 10 people is formed, then walk with a guide who tells everything very fascinatingly. An exhibition dedicated to the Georgian-Abkhaz war is also presented at full length. Tickets cost 200 rubles for adults and 100 for children. No access after 5 pm. Monday is a day off. I highly recommend it. (Translated by Google) Sukhumi embankment is a good place to take beautiful photos and breathe air, as there are eucalyptus plantations. But damn, the gypsies ruined all the good impressions, they cheated you out of some money, so don’t give your hand, and try to avoid it, otherwise you won’t get rid of it. Under the pretext of a holiday, they knit a thread with a wish, supposedly just like that, and as a result they roll out the amount. The fountain itself near the Palace of Culture looks pretty good, many people take photos there and we are no exception.

Nestled in the heart of Sukhumi, Abkhazia, the Sokhumi Lighthouse stands as a remarkable testament to maritime history. Constructed in 1861 and crafted from steel by the renowned French firm of Ernest Gouin, this architectural gem showcases an impressive design attributed to Eiffel himself. The lighthouse is uniquely positioned on screw piles right on the beach, offering stunning views of the surrounding coastline.

In 1861 it was brought and installed in Sukhum. The lighthouse is installed on screw piles. The construction of the lighthouse took 150 working days. The lighthouse operated uninterruptedly until 2000, when the release of funds for its maintenance was stopped. 24-hour operation has now been ensured again. The height of the lighthouse is 37 m. The illumination horizon is 24 km. Inside the tower there is a cast-iron twisted staircase with 137 steps. The lighthouse offers views of the cities of New Athos and Sukhum. The lighthouse is located on a sandy cape washed up by the Gumista River. It also gave its name to the entire residential area located around it. The writer Vladimir Mayakovsky visited Sukhum and climbed the lighthouse tower. The building made a strong impression on him, and later he wrote a book for children, “This little book of mine is about the seas and the lighthouse.” The poet’s mother, Alexandra Mayakovskaya, writes about this in her memoirs. If you live nearby, don’t be lazy - come to the beach in the morning ~ from 05:00-07:00 You will like it :) (Original)

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Sukhumi, Нартаа is a vibrant dining spot that captures the essence of Abkhazian cuisine. Visitors rave about its atmospheric setting and an array of traditional dishes, including their renowned kebabs and egg boats. While some diners have noted that service can be brisk but lacks warmth, many appreciate the quick turnaround from order to table. Portions are generous—sometimes exceeding expectations—and prices remain budget-friendly.
Authentic local food. Nartaa lives up to the name of hospitality (Apsua) of the nation’s local Caucasian cuisine. A little hectic on weekends, but well worth it. They really need a host.

(Translated by Google) The place is very atmospheric, there are many national dishes of Abkhazian cuisine We tried pork loin, the menu indicated a gram from 200g (we wanted to order that much), we were told that it would be a little more, somewhere around 300-350g (100g-190r) In the end, they brought 600g on a big bone, the meat turned out to be very ordinary, there was no special presentation. The egg boat is delicious (RUR 300 single), but it didn’t leave much of an impression. It seems to me that there is not enough interesting dishes for national dishes and music in such a place. There was also no wi-fi. The establishment is located near the sea, there is a second floor with a beautiful view of the embankment. In general, you can visit this cafe for the atmosphere of evening Sukhum.

(Translated by Google) Very tasty khachapuri from the heat. There is a very large flow of visitors; in the evenings during the season there may be a queue for a free table and for the toilet. Try to smile at the tired waitresses and speak politely to them, they will reciprocate ❤️ prepare small money so you can immediately leave the check for settlement + tip.

Although on every corner they say we are hospitable people. People confuse the concepts of hospitality and tourism-business. They do not realize that the country lives off tourists and money comes through good relations. And so the country is divine. But as always, people are different with their quirks. 😊

In the evening, during the season, there may be no seats, you have to wait. But it's worth it. By the way, the service is very fast. Even when seated, the food arrives quickly. Everything is fresh and hot!

The restaurant Таверна Хаит offers a delightful and captivating atmosphere, with its charming interior and spacious outdoor terrace. The menu boasts a variety of delectable dishes that are sure to please any palate. The pea soup is particularly tasty, accompanied by a refreshing chicken house salad. For larger groups, the boat dish is an excellent choice. While the carbonara pasta may be slightly oily, it remains enjoyable.

(Translated by Google) An unrealistically cool place. Firstly, there I found mullet on the menu and it really was there, because before that, having driven along the entire coast, I could not eat it anywhere. Available on the menu, not available. Secondly - perfect service. The waiter Innessa is a very polite, courteous, kind, cheerful, competent and correct girl. The food is incredibly delicious. The most important thing is that the stupid 10% that all low-quality eateries squeeze into checks is not included in the check. Here in the tavern, you want to leave a tip yourself. And most importantly: you can tell a lot about the establishment itself by the state of the toilet. So here it is. The toilet here is beyond praise. Clean, beautiful, presentable. Without any smells. Very cool. The establishment itself gets a solid A for everything. Many thanks to the owner of the establishment and good luck in business (Original)

(Translated by Google) Great place! The taste and presentation of the dishes are beyond any competition. The prices are very pleasant and loyal. Pivas at 120 for zero five. My respect! An ideal place to have a delicious meal and have a good time. P.s.: I confirm the increased (~1 hour) waiting time for food to be ready in the evening, but believe me, it’s worth it! Their cook simply works miracles, and this takes time👍 (Original) Шикарное место! The Hait tavern is of course not located on the embankment, but it is a great place for lunch and a wonderful dinner. They serve excellent craft beer from their own production. And the main highlight of this establishment is its amazing European and Caucasian cuisine. For lunch, I recommend chanakhi, a very tasty Abkha dish that was prepared with passion. And also the khachapur here is very tasty, it has more cheese than bread. I also tried Abkhazian solyanka, it is moderately spicy and very tasty. And for dinner I recommend risotto with duck, pear and blue cheese, it’s just to lick your fingers. I also recommend the salad with crispy eggplants, arugula, tomatoes and bacon.

(Translated by Google) Pleasant interior, many tables on the terrace, and the hall is well air-conditioned inside. The food is delicious, served beautifully, but it takes a long time (the salad took half an hour, the meat even longer). But the staff is polite and friendly. Walking to the tavern in the dark may not be convenient - the streets are poorly lit, and there are no sidewalks in many places.

Really liked the food, generous portions. Great view and terrace. Very nice stuff and service which is not so common in Abkhazia. Prices are a bit on a higher side

Great place to stay in Sokhumi. Very clean and tidy rooms, staff is quite professional, and hotel is located in close proximity to the beach while still in the centre of the city. All in all, strongly recommend.
