Saint-Nazaire in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Saint-Nazaire, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Saint-Nazaire combines a long Atlantic beach and wild coastal paths with an important maritime and industrial heritage. Visitors can tour the massive WWII-era submarine base, explore the Escal’Atlantic ocean-liner experience, and step aboard the Espadon submarine. The town is also a major shipbuilding center, where some of the world’s largest cruise ships are constructed. Nearby, the Brière Regional Natural Park and the resort town of La Baule offer easy day trips into marshland landscapes and one of France’s best-known bays.
With favorites like La Plage, Escal'Atlantic, and Pizzeria La Cabrera, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Le Ponton and McDonald's so you can get the best taste of Saint-Nazaire while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The "Serpent of the Ocean" is a remarkable metal sculpture located on the beach of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, a small French town at the edge of the Loire estuary. This permanent installation portrays the skeleton of a massive prehistoric serpent and was created by Chinese-French artist Huang Yong Ping for an art exhibition in 2012. The sculpture can be seen best at low tide and offers an impressive sight as it interacts with the tides.

It is an impressive sculpture. Makes sure you visit it at low tide to get the full effect.

Found this on the map on the way to our next destination so just had to stop and look. Not seen anything like it before 😁No problem parking .
Kathryn L — Google review
If you are a photographer and can choose any day of the year to visit then try for a date that has sunset around high tide and shoot between the hour before and the hour after, there are many angles all around the beach, on the sea wall and a look out platform accessed by some steps at either end of the Serpent section of beach. Once the head is visible and accessible understandably the world and their partners will be in selfie heaven. As an art instalation I liked it a lot. There is a caravan park (Camping Mindin) that we stayed in which has a key code gate directly onto the beach promenade very handy. The site is set in a wooded glade and was very pleasant. As a beach holiday you are on an estuary but it is sand though small with a lot of the section being underwater at high tide, if you want a larger sandy experience walk with the sea on your right and you will come to a large sandy bay with a controlled swimming area. I liked the place.
Chris S — Google review
I had seen pictures of this sculpture, but did not realise just how big the sculpture is! Make sure that you time your visit well as the sculpture may be partially or totally submerged if the tide is rising in the estuary! You can get up close to the sculpture on the beach - taking lots of photos from different angles. There is parking nearby and a walking trail along the coastline.

Serpent d'Océan," which translates to "Ocean Serpent," is a large-scale aluminum sculpture by Huang Yong Ping that stretches across the beach in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, France. Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Saint-Nazaire Bridge is a remarkable cable-stayed bridge, one of the longest in France, that spans the Loire River. With its elegant curved design and towers painted in red and white, it offers a stunning sight. Opened in 1975, this impressive structure stretches over 3.3 kilometers between Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Brevin-Les-Pins.
When the french build a bridge, they build a BRIDGE. Some nasty crosswinds on two wheels, and the middle lane is a little confusing, but nice views of the port if you've got time to look around. Very pretty to look at from afar, which is very important in a bridge. Definitely better than swimming across the harbour.
Skorpy N — Google review
This was really a thrilling experience... I went on a bicycle and crossing this bridge made me think of the people closest to me. It was a relaxing Friday, I was on my bike and nearly done with my tour. The Eurovelo told me to cross the bridge. It was impressive at first. Then when getting on the road, I wasn't sure anymore.... There were a lot of cars and only a lane of about 30 centimeters. I started going up the bridge and increasingly felt the wind pressing me towards the cars on the left side, when there was no physical barrier between me and them. While mounting, I started praying and thinking about all my relatives and friends. God, I wish I had written my testament. I had flashbacks of all my happiest moments in life, but I wasn't ready to go. Then on the way downhill the wind was coming from two directions and the cars were going past me. Oh, what Adrenalin. Forget sex, drugs or bungee jumping. This is really the thing. Then when having magnificently survived this bridge, I had to sit on a bench for half an hour. It was like I had been pardoned before my hanging. I mean really, who in God's name would ever plan this. This is officially part of the Eurovelo. These guys thought that the painted 30 centimeters were enough. While being uncertain about whether this was actually intended, the occasional sign sad something about cyclists and paying attention. Thanks for that.... If you feel like you have too much security and stability in your life, then ride this bridge on the bicycle, otherwise you might consider a slightly less death-encountering transportation activity.

Sous-marin Espadon offers self-guided audio tours that provide a unique exploration of marine life and heritage on a retired submarine located in a fortified lock. Housed in the fortified lock of Le Port de tous les Voyages, this submarine, which was the first French submarine to dive beyond the Arctic Circle, allows visitors to delve into the inner workings of this remarkable vessel.
Le Espadon experience is fantastic! Went twenty years ago, and again in 2024. It is even better with the updated lighting, video and tour. The audio tour is great for all languages. The roof view is not to be missed. The staff are welcoming and friendly in all languages and the tour price is good value for money giving the enormous task of keeping the submarine alive.
Lawrence S — Google review
Really enjoyed this little visit. Only takes about an hour to see the sub, but allow yourself anither 20-30 mins to see the view from the top of the building. Fascinating inside, really seems like a crazy jumble of complex machinery, but it must have made sense to the sailors who operated it. There's an audio guide in English too, with useful info and stories triggered as you pass specific points. Quite cramped, no hope of wheelchair access I'm afraid. Good little gift shop, toilets on site, and plenty of free parking.
Karl T — Google review
Nice tour of the Espadon where i was able to walk through the sub. They provided an audio guide in English. Very well done and very tight in there. Take the stairs to top of museum where you have a great view of the Uboat base across the way. Gives you a perspective of the massive size of the base.

Very cool experience would recommend. Staff was nice and friendly and spoke good enough english. The prices were reasonable and the headsets were ok had a problem with it not sitting on my head right but was fine. The submarine was very accessible and had a-lot of interesting facts overall a good experience especially if you’ve never been in a submarine. The gift shop was well priced and had some cool stuff. Theres also a view deck on the building with some cool views of the bay

Saint-Nazaire submarine base, a massive German-built U-boat facility from WWII, offers public tours and exhibits. Located on the beautiful western coast of France, Saint-Nazaire is a hidden gem with rich history and breathtaking landscapes. The town also features top attractions such as the high-tech Airbus installation. Visitors can explore the Espadon Submarine base and enjoy an exhibition on cross Atlantic liners inside the base.
Awesome experience. Go up the stairs to get on top. Also see the French submarine tour right across from the U boat base. Go on top of the French sub building too. From there you can see the massiveness of the U boat base. I stayed in Nantes and came to Saint Nazaire by regional train. Lots of other stuff to see in the area. Stop at the tourist info center at the U boat base.
Steven S — Google review
The base is a sad and run down hulk of its former glory. It could be a major attraction but needs some investment. WWII pundits and history buffs would have appreciated an opportunity to have an exhibition on the history of the naval base, linking the dock to the sinking of Bismarck (as she was on the route here), or opération ‘Chariot’. Feels like all these were erased… The sunken sailing ship is a good epitome of its current state.
Andrew K — Google review
Historic site of interest. You can get on to the roof now. Use the very large Long ramp.
William S — Google review
Amazing, If you are interested in nazi mega structures & can see past the surroundings, a untidy port town typical of everywhere in the world. Left thinking about the efforts of the slave labour required to construct. Such recent history.
Gerry F — Google review

Worth a visit, free to enter and good views shown over the port from the roof (accessible from a long ramp across the road) next to the carrefour supermarket.Tourist info and gift shop are based inside the sub pens
Garry C — Google review
As a Second World War nerd, this place had to be visited when I was in the area. What a place, it's easy to build these kind of structures with the Organisation Todt slave labour. Still, it's a brilliant lump of concrete. Free to visit, plus you can go on the roof. I also recommend doing the first French submarine visit which is in the dry dock over the harbour. If you have ever been to the Submarine in Portsmouth, then it's like that.

Escal'Atlantic offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to step back in time and relive the grandeur of transatlantic liners. Housed in a former submarine base, this attraction features a replica passenger ship with interactive exhibits and engine room tours. Visitors can stroll along the decks, explore cabins, and marvel at luxurious fittings while learning about the golden age of traditional ocean liners. The museum also includes the French submarine 'Espadon,' adding an extra layer of fascination to the experience.
Absolutely superb, a full day is required to see so much and to learn it all. The young lady on the ticket office was very helpful in getting us the right tickets. I once knew an old man who was on the raid at St Nazaire, it was a sort of pilgrimage to remember him and his recollections of what fear really is. Nothing disappointed me. The ocean liners exhibition is magnificent and those far off days of luxury felt alive, the French submarine 'Espadon' is a fascinating visit too

Excellent museum, well thought out and well presented. The staff were friendly and informative. As we did not speak French the staff met us at several points on our visit to explain things that due to the language barrier, we may not have understood. The end of the visit is a bit of a surprise, although not suitable for disabled visitors. Brilliant, a must do activity in Saint Nazaire.
Keith R — Google review
Nice historical visit. You will jump in another century when ferry across ocean still exists. We have learnt a lot of things. Must see in St Nazaire.
Xavier G — Google review
After a poor welcome with the ticket office shutters pulled down in our face bang on 1pm we returned at 2pm. Note to self expect all major tourist attractions to shut for lunch! Interesting well presented attraction with mock up of early 20th century ocean liners from cabins to engine rooms. Unique exit via ships lifeboats.
Colin B — Google review
A family-friendly walk back in time, experiencing what it would have been like to be a 1st class passenger on one of the mid-20th century French cruise liners, built in Saint Nazaire. Just enough information for the kids tomunderstamd and for the parents to help fill in the gaps. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Loire estuary, the Ecomusée is a captivating destination that delves into the rich industrial and maritime heritage of Saint-Nazaire. This museum showcases both permanent and rotating exhibits that highlight the city's remarkable growth in the 19th century, earning it the nickname "Little California Breton" due to its rapid population increase reminiscent of America's gold rush era.
Nice and interesting guided tour

OK, a big tip for Anglophones... this museum has nothing to do with the environment, green issues, or climate change. It's not that kind of 'eco'. It is an industrial heritage museum focused on Saint-Nazaire's shipbuilding & seaplane industries. Really interesting. I wish they had more space. Well worth a visit.

I was so disappointed on Sep 23. I decided to visit your museum on this rainy day. Your website said it was open and I had to walk through a rather sketchy area alone only to find a sign on your door that you were closed! I have a photo to prove it - fermeture exceptionelle - please update your website when necessary. And a bit of a dangerous place to be a lone female - I just read your kind-hearted reply and I totally forgive you!! I hope to visit one day.

Museum of the histoty of St. Nazaire, and how different wars etc. have shaped it. Mostly in French but the ticket lady speaks English which is very nice! The main themes are archeological finds, construction of harbor, ships, seaplanes. Free parking!

Great experience but this museum needs a small update on cruise ships and planes current performances. A small hint on the new development of Saint Nazaire industry (offshore wind, natural gas ships, sails, H2, ...) will be warmly welcome

French steakhouse restaurant
Courtepaille is a delightful dining spot that offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for a quick yet satisfying meal. During our recent visit, we enjoyed the friendly and efficient service from the staff, who were more than willing to assist with any language barriers. The menu features delicious options like burgers made from fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked on charcoal grills, alongside tasty jacket potatoes. While some dishes may vary in execution, overall, the quality of food remains commendable.
Excellent service and the food is always good quality and fresh. The waitresses are friendly and efficient and the food is served fast. The waitresses speak English and help if you get stuck on the menu.

It's a nice restaurant, very cozy and waiters are very polite. I recommend to eat the burger and the jacket potato , burgers are very well done and made with fresh ingredients. Most of the plates are cooked on the charcoal grilled. Not so expensive if you order a menu. Price between 15 and 25 euro per person

The chef managed a remarkable gastronomic feat of not only overcooking a Tuna steak but then managed to serve it almost cold.. Other than that the meal was bang on average.. The wine was served at the correct temperature 😂🤭

Very nice place where to eat a fresh sushi in the town. Salmon is very fresh and california rolls it's amazing. Most of the menu comes with an amazing tofu soup, cabbage sald and rice that i recommend with the rice winegar to be asked at the moment. Asahi beer is a perfect match for your Japanese experience.

Close to my hotel, and the prices were good for the amount of food I got. Service was nice, although staff were not that good with English. Nonetheless, the menus has images for most of the items so it's manageable. A few of the items come with rice, salad and/or miso soup, so that was nice.

Restaurant
La Plage - Place du Commando is an elegant establishment offering pasta, meat, and seafood dishes alongside a variety of cocktails. With its two terraces and sea views, this upscale venue provides a pleasant atmosphere. The staff is welcoming and accommodating, allowing for convenient reservations prior to arrival. Situated facing the beach, diners can enjoy stunning vistas while indulging in delicious cuisine. The restaurant's interior exudes charm and the overall ambiance is trendy.
From first visit became one of our favorite places in Saint Nazaire for dining out and for drinks. Have great view on the beach and main walking area of the center of Saint Nazaire. The staff are very friendly, especially the manager Mathew that tried to squeeze us without reservation, and great thanks to our Server Bruno who also made the experience very enjoyable. The atmosphere is very pleasant. We had dinner, the both dishes were amazingly delicious, one of the best soy salmon risotto and pork belly that we have ever tried, including the appetizer with salmon and the chocolate mousse 😋 Will definitely come again during our stay in Saint Nazaire!
Miljana S — Google review
Our male server was excellent! He suggested a red wine, a Syrah, Loup Du Pic, 2022 which was the highlight of our filet mignon Father's Day dinner. It was not listed on their wine list. This wine was very smooth and enjoyable, more so than a commonly available North American wine, Meiomi Pinot Noir. Thank you!
Bruce K — Google review
Lovely restaurant with stunning view. Tasty starters, a good selection of mains, and delicious desserts. The atmosphere is great, though prices are a little on the high side. Perfect for a special treat.

We had lunch here today, staff were friendly, great with the children and were patient with language difficulties! Great views of the beach and sculptures. Had the Breton pork which was really tasty, and the coffee gourmand as dessert. C'etait très bien, merci á tous.
Andy S — Google review
Lovely ambient and patrons clearly enjoying their evening here. We love it too, but a waitress here is unpleasant and belittling. As patrons of the restaurant, we did not felt welcomed by her nor her warmth to have us served. Restaurant is situated by the beach and we can imagine the nice view during the day. We ended up having 2 glasses of champagne and a tapas and left, we originally intended to dine here but gave up because of the waitress. There is nothing else to pick on other than the attitude and professionalism of this particular waitress.
Fabio V — Google review
Was pleasantly surprised for what had tourist trap written all over it. Service was friendly and accomodated promptly. Staff navigated English pronunciations for what we didn't understand. Food was a little less rustic as I was hoping. But a decent experience all around.
Mark S — Google review
The staff is friendly I could make a reservation for two, 20 minutes on a summer saturday before arriving. Our table was facing the beach so it was really nice to have such a view. The interior of the restaurant is also nice and the vibe is cool ! The menu is not made for vegetarian and the choice is restricted. We tried the cesar salad and a bolognaise they were good 👍 the quality and quantity were worth the price. I recommend this restaurant but I hope that they change their menu from time to time. The cocktail deserves a 5/5 though!
