Ware in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Ware, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ware is a historic market town on the River Lea, known for its attractive riverside setting and distinctive 18th-century gazebos lining the waterfront. Visitors can explore its coaching inn heritage, walk sections of the River Lea towpath, or enjoy nearby countryside and nature reserves. The town’s compact center offers traditional pubs, independent shops, and old timber-framed buildings, giving it a classic English small-town feel. Its location and rail links also make Ware a convenient base for day trips to both Hertfordshire sights and central London.
With favorites like Super Kebab and Chicken, Fish & Chips Ware - Wrights, and Place House Hall, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Fish & Chips Ware - Wrights and Choppy's Restaurant at Waggon & Horses so you can get the best taste of Ware while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Garden center
Cafe
Van Hage Garden Centres in Great Amwell is a delightful destination that goes beyond the typical garden center experience. This expansive venue offers an impressive selection of plants, outdoor furniture, and aquatic supplies, making it a haven for gardening enthusiasts. Visitors can also indulge in delicious meals at the on-site café or explore local produce at the food hall. Families will find joy in the animal farm and can take a charming ride on the East Herts Miniature Railway.
Once again, a truly stupendous display for Christmas, still some great plants to buy as well!! Decided to stay for a late lunch also, and was not disappointed, everything form food, décor and friendliness of staff, as always first class. always a pleasure to visit this centre.
Gary H — Google review
I traveled here from Birmingham as my family highly recommended I came to see this place. My relatives live close and visit often, especially Christmas time as I've seen pictures and it looks fantastic! So impressed with the displays and structure, colors and thought that have gone in to the visual displays. All sections are totally inviting and vibrant. I couldn't see why anyone could possibly have a bad experience here, its a lovely magical place and worth the visit for a good few hours!
Mildred M — Google review
The cafe is always so dirty. The tables are never cleared especially at the weekend. Considering you have to order at the till and queue up for ages, you’d think it’d be clean. It’s hard work dining at Van Hage!. It’s a shame because the cafe environment itself is really nice. I want to like it, but I don’t. And it’s very expensive. I’d spend more money here if it was cleaner and the queue was realistic. Why would I pay 5quid for a piece of cake that I have to queue up for ages to get, then clear my own table to eat it, surrounded by dirty tables whilst I am eating?! We come to Van Hages for the little train as we have small kids. I wouldn’t come here otherwise. Why? Cafe, I’ve covered above. Wouldn’t buy the plants as it’s a rip off compared to other local garden centres. Maybe in the future I’ll be in the market for a garden room with a wine chiller and a life size Buddha statue with water feature accented by a 3 tonne barbecue, all finished off with a flat white and Victoria sponge surrounded by dirty plates. But until that day comes, I think I’ll just head straight through to the miniature railway and keep my money in my pocket.

Came for the garden centre, stayed for the adventure golf! Excellent centre for a lazy afternoon, great cafes and the adventure golf was a big hit with us. Only been open a couple of days and is so well set up and themed.

Called into Van Have for garden ideas, decided to stay for lunch and visited their very clean and well presented cafe. Chose jacket potatoes from a very varied menu which were served very quickly. Pots of tea was ample for three cups. Plenty of free parking. Highly recommended.

A big shout out to the wonderful first aid team who looked after my Mum until the ambulance arrived when she collapsed in the restaurant on Monday. 3 lovely women one was called Libby. Very professional and knew their stuff. We felt very safe in their hands until the paramedics arrived. Mum under investigation now but doing well. Grateful thanks to you all xxx

Excellent garden centre with huge selection of plants. Well laid out. Lots of parking. There is a lot more than plants there!

Scenic Railroads
The East Herts Miniature Railway is a popular tourist attraction that offers an enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. The railway is well-maintained and the staff members are friendly and courteous. The tickets are reasonably priced, allowing visitors to enjoy two circuits of the track for just one payment per person. The railway features both steam locomotives and diesel engines, pulling three-car miniature carriages.
Underpriced! Only £1.50!? An amazing little gem in east Herts. We visited on Sat 14 September. It was busy but that only added to the experience for our 1 year old. We went on three times, and there were three different trains running. Very professionally run, clear safety protocols in place, and a fun couple of hours for us. Choo choo!
Harry K — Google review
A lovely experience for any child who loves trains. My grandson, who is 2, thoroughly enjoyed and wanted to go again and again. Great price just £1.50 a ride per person. Thank you to the volunteers for providing this amazing experience.
Sarah J — Google review
My Dad use to bring me & my brother when we was little, he then would take my daughter then he would take her two children. Sadly he has passed now, but me & mum continue to bring the youngest it is a special place for us great memories. Always friendly people & the Christmas lights were equally as wonderful.
Lisa D — Google review
Took our 4year old grandson who loves trains and he couldn't contain his exicitement at what he saw and experienced. Went on it a few times and when he got home he told his mum that he is a very lucky boy as he got to go on it so many times! Such a fantastic service. Thankyou.
Leena S — Google review
Great little railway inside Van Hage Garden Centre. Run by volunteers and funded by admission fee of £1.50 per ride per passenger. Kids love it, although it only lasts about 10 mins.
John O — Google review
Such a brilliant little place! Perfect for my train obsessed 4 year old and my 9month old loved tagging along too. We went on it three times in a row as he would’ve happily stayed on it all day. Lovely little setting and people were very friendly. Will definitely be going back
Georgie P — Google review
I have been to many such centers and though the main purpose is a garden centre with restaurant the miniature railway is brilliant. Never been to a better similar attraction. Good value for money AND they also spend some if their income on supporting local charities. Also run occasional days especially for disabled support organisations. Runs every weekend and midweek during school holidays. Look up East Herts Miniature Railway for information.
Richard T — Google review
On a trip back home we decided to make a detour... the East Herts Miniature Railway is located in the rather large Van Hage Garden Centre. It takes a bit of navigating to get through the garden centre out to where the railway is! There is a little ticket office where you can buy tickets (card thankfully accepted!) The railway itself has been set up really nicely, a trip through a tunnel and a ride over a pond included! The volunteers were great and friendly with the kids, and the steam train did a great job getting us round the track! It was raining on our visit so we got a little wet, but the station area where you get on etc. was nice and dry. A really great miniature railway, and for the kids (and me!) it made the visit to a garden centre worthwhile!

Scott's Grotto is a fascinating and enchanting place created by 18th century poet John Scott. It features a series of chambers adorned with stones, shells, and colored glass. Visitors are advised to bring a torch for proper exploration as some areas have limited lighting. The grotto is lined with flint, seashells, and various patterns, leading to underground chambers. There is also a summer house displaying prints from the grotto's era.
An interesting site hiding in between houses on a side road. The volunteers are knowledgeable, and torches are provided for the walk in the grotto. If you are claustrophobic, then the walk inside the grotto is not advisable. Don't miss the summer house. Parking is limited to on the street only. Allow 1 hour for your visit.
Daren K — Google review
Interesting novelty of a building. Absolutely lovely volunteers. At some point it felt a bit like a D&D setting. Doesn't take long to see the whole thing. Not recommended if you're claustrophobic.
Kostas P — Google review
I've been meaning to visit this place for many years, and I finally managed it on Saturday. What a place!! Lined with flint & seashells made into various patterns. Tunnels leading off to round chambers dug underground. Apart from the last chamber, there is no lighting. However, the volunteers will lend you a torch. There is also a summer house with prints on the walls, showing what the area was like when the grotto was built. There are no toilets or cafes. Some of the footpaths are steep. Parking is on the residential streets outside. Open every Saturday & Bank Holidays, April to September. Admission £2.
Mark B — Google review
Fantastic little grotto dating from Circa1760. 99% still original, some nice Chambers in the cave with decorative shells. Gardens nice with a little summer house. Staff knowledgeable and helpful. All for £2 each. We'll worth it to help keep history alive.
Iain W — Google review
Pretty interesting place. The volunteers who run it really know the history and show passion in its telling. Bit of an odd thing to someone to build but worth a walk round if you're in the area. If you have claustrophobia, I wouldn't recommend as the tunnels are small and you only have a torch to guide you until you hit the larger rooms. There's also a summer house to look at. It takes 5-10 minutes to walk around it.
Samantha Z — Google review
An amazing little Gem in Ware; historical, unique, pretty and interesting for all ages! Take a sound pair of shoes as the ground can be a little uneven. Take a torch too!
Cathy F — Google review
Little hidden gem. Only there 30mins as not that larger space. But what is there is well I’m not sure how to describe? Bit spooky in places (given torch to walk round with) turned torch off…… dark. And I mean blackness. Just very strange but pretty at same time. Where do you get that many shells? The staff friendly (even when rain was coming down on them) and so helpful. Thank you

Choppy's Restaurant at Waggon & Horses is a delightful spot that perfectly blends a cozy pub atmosphere with exceptional dining. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a charmingly decorated interior filled with ample seating options and an inviting outdoor terrace adorned with large sun umbrellas and garden space for children to play. The menu boasts an impressive selection of dishes, particularly fresh seafood, including the option to pre-order oysters or lobster for those special occasions.
We've been here a few times and decided to come back for for a last meal of a two day birthday celebration and and it couldn't have been a more perfect place to do so. The food is always excellent with a wide variety of options including lots of fresh fish and seafood. If you want oysters or lobster you can pre-book and let them know and they will order in specially. Our waitress Lizzie was excellent. She was so friendly and helpful and made the evening that much better. You can have great food and bad service and it can ruin the evening but there's no chance of that with Lizzie so note to the owner, keep hold of her as she makes a big difference to to the overall ambience 👏👏👏

Lovely food and plenty off it. Prices quite reasonable and a good choice on the menu. Service was good , waiters very attentive. We did also have food envy with the rack of ribs that someone at the next table got. 😋

We have never had a bad meal here. We cannot wait for the upcoming refurbishment. Hopefully comfy sofas and chairs so we can just pop in for a drink in-between eating in.

One item stopped this being 5 stars. The toilets are in need of a refurb. Now on to the good stuff. From the outside it is a pub with parking to the side. Once you enter there lots of tables all in a nicely decorated setting. There is a terraced outside area with large sun umbrellas available and some garden space with some kids swings. The food menu is good perhaps even could be reduced by a few dishes but all 5 of us ordered different items and we all had empty plates. Food was really tasty. The build your own salad option is a good idea. Staff were lovely and whilst it was not busy they were attentive and helpful. Desserts again were tasty and they also have a specials board and if you like gin they have a fair few of those available. Coffee on the terrace after was good. Some people say this place is expensive and whilst it is not cheap, good food never is. Will definitely go again and now want to try breakfast also.

Kebab shop
If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than Super Kebab and Chicken. This gem is renowned for its exceptional quality food that doesn't break the bank. The manager goes above and beyond to accommodate dietary needs, making it a safe choice for those with allergies. Their chicken kebabs are grilled over proper charcoal, ensuring a deliciously smoky flavor without the greasiness often associated with kebabs.
Great experience ordering from here. Always freshly prepared and prompt with delivery. My usual spot when I’m contracted near Ware.

I had ordered spicy chicken wings on October 10, 2024, and the food was extremely salty and inedible. 🤢 I had to throw away all the food. 🗑️ So, I called the shop immediately and they said they could send the order again, but it would take time, or they would adjust the price with my next order. Since I was hungry and couldn't wait that long, I agreed to adjust the price with the next order. Today, October 24, 2024, I decided to order from that shop again and called to inquire about how they would adjust the price with my new order. The person on the other end of the call told me they don't have any such policies and completely refused to adjust the price. 😡 They lack business ethics, and neither the food nor the behavior is acceptable. 😤

Im sorry to say! But this was the most awful kebab ive had in a very long time! The Kofte was over cooked and more like plastic looking! The chips were over cooked! Best kebab shop in this area for sure. Proper charcoal barbecue. Not greasy (As kebabs go!) although I only eat chicken kebabs. I drive from Hertford even though I got a kebab shop short walk from me. Not too expensive, nice guys, and clean! How disappointing 3 adults 1 child (2) £265 bill and couldn't spare a peice of bread or crackers to feed the ducks down the road, I had to buy a packet of crisps because the kitchen could not be bothered to get a bit of bread, I felt sorry for the waitress she was clearly embarrassed. We had waste bun and bread from our own food but No deal nothing doing! . Well what a shame food and service was excellent compassion ZERO! what a disgrace!

Decent pub with serving quality food, good selection of drinks and friendly service. If it’s your local pub, you’d go there often but for me, it wasn’t worth traveling for 🫣

Been twice and the beer has been under whelming or off (smelt like vinegar) which I have raised. This is a shame as it’s my local pub, serves Tring Brewery which is a favourite of mine and it’s a lovely pub in all other aspects. I’m hoping that the staff seek knowledge/training on how to keep the beer in the near future.

Enjoyable Mothers Day Lunch My first ever visit to the George in the beautiful village of Great Amwell. From the moment we walked in, the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. Drinks arrived promptly, as did each of the 3 courses throughout our stay. It has a nice cosy atmosphere and the food is not only presented very well, it tastes delicious. More restaurant quality food in a pub setting. It’s not the cheapest place in the world, with menu prices touching on London prices, but if you are in demand, and people are happy to pay…then what can you expect I would return and recommend for a lovely meal

It was a beautiful summers evening and we were celebrating an anniversary and what a perfect spot it was. It had a beautiful outside seating area surrounded by gorgeous mansions which created a very surreal vibe as you dine, almost as though you're on a movie set. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was really good. The menu changes daily which is very interesting so it's hard to recommend as it may not be there but I will say the padron peppers were probably the best I've ever had and the cheese selection was also amazing.

Superb food, probably the best roast beef I have ever tried. Every dish was on point t, succulent and tasty. Can't wait to go back

One of my favourite establishments. Food especially of very high standard. Only small downside is the lack of parking. But not a problem.
