Wartburg is a medieval castle located in Eisenach, Germany, set on a high rock surrounded by parkland. This UNESCO-listed site has played a significant role in German history for over a millennium. It was at Wartburg where Martin Luther translated the New Testament and codified the written German language while under papal ban. The castle's construction dates back to 1067 and has undergone various changes over the centuries, reflecting the region's cultural shifts.
Can be accessed by car, there is a parking lot next to it. If you are out of luck as we were there are additional parking spots in the city below with busses riding to the castle. You can also take one of the hiking trails that offer a lot of scenic views. The castle itself is well preserved, there is an armory to visit and a tower to see everything around. Definitely worth seeing if you are around. Additionally I only noticed it recently but at the start this castle is shown in the LP music clip One last time.

Interesting castle, not the best I have seen, but quite big and equipped. Short tour thru the living quarters in the castle, bit about the Martin Luter history and nice viewing point. Overall I expected more interesting place than it actually was. Small parking at the bottom of the hill with short walk up, or shuttle bus ride. Worth visiting, but bit disappointing.
A P — Google review
This was well worth the entrance fee! The castle has so much fabulous history from the 12th century onwards. We enjoyed every minute of the auditory device educational experience.
Helen E — Google review
Wonderful location and views from the castle. The historical tour is very interesting and the preservation and restoration of the chambers is top notch. It is also a historical site for christians, as Martin Luther started the translation to the New Testament in this castle. You can see the room in which he was working.
Sergio G — Google review
We visited Wartburg during the Christmas season. Getting up to the castle was quite a trek - it's a long and challenging walk uphill, so be prepared if you're not in good shape! It was also very cold and windy at the top of the mountain. The Christmas market was extremely crowded, so unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to properly explore it. We also found it a bit difficult to find the castle entrance as there weren't clear signs outside. However, the guided tour inside was excellent! The guide shared the castle's history along with interesting stories and fun facts. Before leaving, we even enjoyed some live music in the upper part of the castle.
Nika — Google review
Now that's a beautiful castle. We took the guided tour and learned a lot! It's worth taking a slow walk at the museum once the tour finishes. Sit, have a beer and a Thüringen wurst. Just lovely!
Emily C — Google review
Lest you miss it at the Wartburg: The triptych of the 3 successive electors by Lucas Cranach depicts a pivotal part of German and European history. The central position is held by Frederick the Wise, Duke of Saxony, arch marshall and elector of emperor Charles V, having refused his own candidacy. Frederick holds the vice regal crown of Germany during the absence of the emperor. His brother John (l) followed, and the latter's son John Frederick (r) fought against emperor and pope for the new church. (JF was brother-in-law to Kg Henry VIII for a short while by the Cleve sisters.)
Hans G — Google review
The trekking routes around and on the way to the castle have some of the visually stunning vistas of the Thüringen wilderness. The city of Eisenach looks quite stunning along the way as well. I'd definitely recommend the trek to the castle along from the other side of another hill.

Lutherhaus Eisenach is a historic half-timbered house that served as the residence of Martin Luther during his school years. The museum showcases various exhibitions depicting the life of the religious reformer, offering visitors insights into his early years and connection to Eisenach. Additionally, the site also features interactive elements and historical facts related to Luther's legacy.
Amazing museum organized well. I loved being able to see the original house and the Ai Weiwei exhibition together.
Adrian D — Google review
It's quite a small place, but there is a lot inside. It's the same place Luther was growing up. There is a lot of text, but there are also some statistics, fact's and some interactives. It is very interesting, not only because it concerns the most of us. The price per person is 8€, for children 6€, there are also some reduced prices for families (16€).
Antong L — Google review
Well, I'm both a Luther fan and a language nerd, so you can't really get a better museum for me. Love this place. One of my favorite displays: An interactive computer where you can try to translate a passage of the Bible yourself and see how it compares to others. It really gives one an idea of the struggle Luther had. Must-see on my list.
Michael M — Google review
Amazing job done when the house was renovated and the exhibition upgraded. Highly recommend to see it.

I have enjoyed being in an informative and friendly museum. It was a nice Intro station to the life of Luther before visiting the castle of Wartburg.
Hagop A — Google review
It is a significant site associated with the life and legacy of the renowned religious reformer, Martin Luther. The Lutherhaus is a half-timbered house where Martin Luther is believed to have lived as a schoolboy from 1498 to 1501. The museum offers visitors a glimpse into the early years of Luther's life and his connection to Eisenach. Inside the Lutherhaus, you can explore various exhibits and displays that provide insights into Luther's upbringing, education, and the influences that shaped his thinking. The museum features artifacts, documents, and multimedia presentations that shed light on Luther's religious ideas and the events that led to the Protestant Reformation. One of the notable highlights of the Lutherhaus is the Luther Room, which is believed to be Luther's former living quarters. This room has been reconstructed to reflect the 16th-century style and atmosphere, giving visitors a sense of Luther's daily life during his time in Eisenach. The museum also showcases a collection of historic Bibles, including an original Luther Bible from 1534, which played a significant role in the dissemination of Luther's translation of the Bible into German. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Lutherhaus hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, and events related to Martin Luther, the Reformation, and the broader historical context of the time. The Lutherhaus Eisenach is a site of pilgrimage for those interested in Martin Luther, the Reformation, and the history of Christianity. It provides a valuable educational and cultural experience, allowing visitors to deepen their understanding of Luther's life, his ideas, and his enduring impact on religion and society.
Md ( — Google review
The museum has a well designed narrative of Luther's life and the Reformation and does an excellent job of telling this story. So at this level its highly recommended. However the museum layout is incoherent with several seemingly pointless exhibits and a lack of relevant historical artifacts puts the emphasis on artistic or interpretive displays.

Bachhaus Eisenach is a museum located in a 1400s house dedicated to the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The museum features around 250 original exhibits and offers live performances of music played on baroque keyboard instruments every hour. Visitors can gain insights into Bach's life, including his living conditions, biography, and relationships with women. Additionally, there is a demonstration of historical instruments. The museum also includes a modern section where visitors can immerse themselves in Bach's music.
Have been a fan of Bach for decades, so immersing myself in his history and music was a treat! I loved seeing so many of the period instruments and hearing them played. And all the opportunities to listen to so many of his pieces and to read background on them was fantastic. The gift shop had a lot of fun things, too! The only con was that the concert and explanations of the old instruments was solely in German. I wish I could have understood it.
KM S — Google review
We had a really interesting visit to the Bachhaus with friends. Our tour guide was excellent and spoke fluent English, which was great for us. However, some other visitors with children preferred the explanations in German. Thankfully, our guide gave us a quick summary in English afterwards. It was fascinating to see how Bach lived, including his bed, table, and instruments from that era. We especially enjoyed the modern museum section, particularly the immersive elements. It was a great blend of seeing the historical house and a modern perspective on Bach's life and work.

His home and museum giving amazing info how he created his music. More than imagination! Children friendly. Those introductions on computers kept me in awe and giggling🤭. Come early and get a live piano live play at 11:00am! Bravo 🎼

Very nice museum to visit. A lot information about Bach is shown, about him as person but also about his music. On Sunday also some instruments are played and explained.

Oct 06, 2025 10am we a group of eight visited the museum, we are all English-speaking Asians. Right away we attended the 10am live performance, at the same time there's a group of 30 elder Germans with us. The only performer gave introduction in Germany and followed with English. He speaks English fluently. Then in the next 20-25 minutes of performance he interacted with this group of Germans with questions and laughs but only in Germany while the rest of us understand nothing. Then when it seems he has done all his performance, he continued to talk and interact with his germany audience. I have to raise my hand to ask if he has finished all the live performance. He replied yes, then we left. What a disrespectful treatment to the international visitors in this respectful musician's house. I hope it will not happen to other visitors, and hopefully no race discrimination implications.
Danny H — Google review
Very interesting, a nice combination between antique and modern. At 12.00 noon we had the opportunity to enjoy a live session where a musician played the instruments Bach played in his lifetime. Such as the front facing organ, the harpsichord, the spinnet (a small harpsichord), the clavichord, and a 2 person organ (the player and the person pumping the air with a foot pedal). I was amazed at how big his personal theological library was. Really interesting. The modern part of the museum had 70's style egg seats hanging from the ceiling, an ideal cocoon to enjoy the music. It is not a huge place but it can keep you occupied for a while. They also have a coffee and cake place.

We enjoyed our visit to the museum and learned so much about the life and times of JS Bach. This had been on our holiday list since the plan came together and it was everything we wanted.

B-A-C-H Restaurant is a charming eatery located near Bachhause, offering a delightful dining experience for tourists seeking German cuisine. The restaurant is known for its family-friendly environment and serves a variety of dishes, including their most beloved Thuringer Sauerbraten with apple red cabbage and Thuringian dumplings. Found this place by googling (and it was right across from the Bach Haus). The reviews were pretty high so I went for dinner. It was fairly small restaurant and a staff was looking at me like I was at the wrong place. I asked for a table and she gestured with her chin to point the table right in front of the door. Maybe I needed a reservation? Anyway, after 10 to 15 minutes later, same lady took my order and food came out somewhat fast (within 10 minutes). The picture perfect. And that was it. Literarily. Just a look. It was the most uninteresting/tasteless/waste of ingredients thing I've ever ate. I was so hungry but for the first time in many decades, I could not finish my meal..

We were looking for a dinner place near our hotel and walked into this place without reservation. The meat and cherry beer were very tasty, but I think I've had better Klößen... it's still delicious though. However, I too was puzzled by the garden seating... I mean the alfresco area was clearly half free, but the tables and chairs were chained up and we were told to either sit indoors or at the tables along the street...🤔

Worst service I had in a restaurant. I went with my wife for a dinner on april 23rd. We don’t speak german. The manager/owner can speak english, but she did not try to help us at all. We ordered our food without clear understanding of the menu in german because she just didn’t come to our table. We were the last table to get our order, after many tables that arrived after us. At the end, when we tried to ask a desert, she just said “kitchen is closed”. Rude and cold! Food was ok. If you don’t speak german, run away from this restaurant!

Burgcafe Gadem in Eisenach offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere, serving a variety of delicious coffee specialties and homemade cakes. Guests can also enjoy a hearty breakfast here. The cafe is known for its rustic decor and cleanliness. While the outdoor terrace provides a great view, it may not always be available for dining due to understaffing. However, the friendly service and tasty Flammkuchen make it worth a visit.
Very friendly service, tasty cakes, hot coffee & tea, prices are very reasonable (this is a UNESCO World Heritage). Can wholeheartedly recommend.

My eyes were drawn to their cakes on display but I was convinced that the Flammkuchen is not to be missed. Therefore having only 1 stomach instead of 2 😂, I had to make a choice. Flammkuchen were indeed delicious, its like pizza but dough is much thinner and lighter. Anything with tomato, cheese and arugula toppings, I am sold. Service: warm and friendly.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately the café is no longer what it once was. Unfortunately the hot chocolate only comes from the machine and the cream is ok, but nothing special. The prices are pretty high for that. The rustic interior design is convincing. I wouldn't come back, but it's still worth a visit to warm up in winter. The iced coffee was very tasty and the piece of cake, we had cheese and apricot, too. Price performance is totally fine. Payment in cash. EC card payment was not possible at the moment, but there was a clearly legible sign indicating this. The café is rustically furnished and everything was clean and tidy. Tables were cleared immediately after guests left. (Original) Gemütliches Cafe wo man auch draußen sitzen kann, jedenfalls an dem Tag wo wir dort waren. A little piece of home in Eisenach. We just got done eating the American brunch. I can say as an American they hit the mark very good and should continue to offer the American brunch in the future. It costs 29 Euros an Person. But to be honest I would have been happy to pay 40 or even 50 Euros for what we had. They thought of everything. There was so much to chose from. Coffee and water is included in the price. They truly sat down and paid a lot of attention to detail. The bathrooms had mouth wash, Deo etc. to freshen up. The general decoration for the restaurant is very classy. Hats of to the decorator. Everything was thought out. The staff was very polite and helpful. The man making the Burgers and pulled pork burgers did an excellent job. It was all in all a wonderful experience! Note to owner: Please continue to do the American brunch. You have something. I will be more than happy to help you with refining anything or suggestions for menu. But please don’t stop offering American brunch. You are very close to what we do at home.

truly wonderful totally unexpected gourmet experience! Since we only had an hour to get to the last tour of the Wartburg on a sunny cold January Saturday, we opted for lunch in our hotel and weren’t expecting much. My Spanish husband was especially suspicious of the Thüringer tapas on the menu, so we began just with three soups for the three of us: wild mushroom, potato, and a fish soup named after the restaurant. All three were so truly delicious that we ordered a full round of tapas that were just as tasty as they were creatively prepared: regular chorizo was combined with a lentil salad, Serrano ham with sour cream and basil, blue-violet potatoes with herbs and quark, Thüringer dumpling with cream cheese and herbs, grilled salmon with a bit of rucola salad served with Dijon mustard dressing. We left very well fed for our great tour of the Wartburg and were so impressed by our light lunch that we decided to come back for dinner in our hotel and chose two three-course specials. One started with a tasty pumpkin soup, the other with an appetizer that could’ve counted as an entrée: a surprising combination of trout with red beets and a radish potato dressing. We had the rack of lamb and the Wiener Schnitzel for our main courses and were only a bit disappointed that we had no room for more dessert than a small portion of ice cream. And our final bill for our party of three was less than € 100 – making five-star value for money!
