Portuguese restaurant
Restaurant
Taberna A Laranjinha is a charming and rustic tavern located in the historical center of Covilha, Portugal. It offers a cozy atmosphere and serves an extensive selection of authentic "petiscos" that pay tribute to the gastronomic richness of the Serra da Estrela region. Housed in a typical granite house, the tavern exudes a welcoming ambiance with its familial feel and traditional decor elements.
Great restaurant recommended by my Portuguese friends. We stopped there on our way to Belmonte. Really worth the time. The restaurant is tucked all the way to the city top. We were lucky to get a parking place right in front of it. At the entrance you see many prizes. The tavern atmosphere is very cozy and the food fantastic. Really recommend sharing appetizers and mains. Drink the local wine. It is fabulous.

A wonderful experience. Need book in advance. Once you have a table it's yours for the night. Dining with local friends who chose the meal. It was absolutely exquisite. One of the best restaurants I have been to in Portugal.

Waouh ❤️ What an experience. Everything we ate was super delicious 😋😋😋 from the appetizer to the meal, then to the dessert 🍨. We were five people. We ordered different meals. And I tasted each dish. Each one was excellent. A festival of flavors. (Cuisine très raffiné). It was so good that I was waiting to be disappointed with the dessert. But It was also super delicious and riche with flavors, too. The staff is super friendly and agreeable. I liked the ambiance and coziness of the decor. Especially the hand-made lamps decoration that were made by a local artist, Anna-Paula Almeida, so beautiful and authentic for that place. I really enjoyed the moment very much that I forgot to take photos of the ambiance. I only took some photos of our drinks because of the light. But if you go to Covilhã you must try this restaurant. Don't forget to make a reservation. If not, you will not be able to eat there.

We went as a family, after searching for a good place to eat in Covilhã, we did get it right. We were welcomed by all staff in a kind and as we were part of their family. The environment has that rustic cozy feeling that transportes you to the rural Portugal, while still in the middle of a city. The starters, typical portuguese smoked sausages/chorizo with a twist that elevated the flavour, preparing you for the rest of the meal, amazing. The entrees, what can we say, did not disappointed, from the cod, the tenderness of the steaks, to an amazing fall of the bone veal rib dish, all with wonderfull taste of traditional homemade cooking, but with a contemporary feel of the modern world. As a dessert, my typical choice of cottage cheese with pumpkin jam that did not let down. Finished with an espresso and a sensational (on the house 🤫) morello cherry liquor. To return...see you soon
Helder P — Google review
Great flavors, a quiet atmosphere, and the waiters were very helpful and professional. We tried to call for a reservation, but since the place was closed during the day, we waited until 7:30 PM. We were a bit worried about whether we’d find a table when we arrived, but it turned out to be no problem at all. We’re so glad we waited all day—it was a special experience for us! :)
ESRA G — Google review
Excellent restaurant. My wife and I had the meat with coleslaw and legumes. The staff is absolutely great and the food is outstanding ... we definitely ate more than should have. Although we don't drink, I could tell that the choice of wine is vast and probably a good as the kitchen. I'll most certainly go back there again for another exquisite dining experience.
Guido P — Google review
Very strange place! We arrived at 13:45 and the restaurant was almost empty (only one table had guests)! And they didn’t accept us (2 people) because we didn’t have reservation!!! Were they expecting lots of people with reservation near 14:00 on a Monday??? They could have a more convincing excuse. Fortunately there was a great option in the main square that had a much nicer attitude

It is a great place to see a beautiful view in Lisbon. Pros: 1. It is free to go here. No need to pay any admission. 2. It is easy to go here if you are in Lisbon city center. You can take tram or walking. We walk from Rua Augusta to this place and it took us only 10 minutes. You just need to climb up the street. 3. There are some restaurants nearby if you want take some snacks or drinks. 4. Entrance accessible for wheelchair. 5. Parking accessible for wheelchair nearby.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Ponte da Ribeira da Carpinteira is a modern architectural marvel that spans the Carpinteira Valley, connecting Covilha's town center with the eastern Penedos Altos area. Designed by Joao Luis Carrilho da Graca, this stunning bridge took six years to complete and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Its sleek, minimalist design provides a striking contrast to the city's historic industrial buildings. Visitors can capture memorable photos and enjoy panoramic vistas from this award-winning structure.
Nice and clever viaduct. Shame the lift didn’t work and wasn’t available. Great views.
Crafty W — Google review
The views from this bridge are amazing and will give some very good photos to remember or even use as wallpaper. It's clean, modern and awarded design adds to the progressively more extended network of accessibility in this city. The contrast with the old buildings that make the history of this (once) industrial city is very well achieved.

Easy to miss on your way up to the Torre, so keep a lookout for it on the right on the way up. There is a parking for sightseeing and picture taking. The carving is bigger than one anticipates but hidden due to it bending into the rock face

Was in for a beer late yesterday and had to pay cash. Today I had to wait for some time to have my order of a kebab and beer. The beer eventually came but no food. After 40 minutes the same waitress came and asked if I wanted to order some food.... I said I'd ordered a kebab and she went off in a huff and was shouted at by the owner, who seems to do this a lot. 10 minutes later a bacon, lettuce and tomato roll with some "kebab sauce", which is some cheap garlic mayo, though not much, appeared. Not offered any chili sauce or any other sauce for that matter. Very bland, if that was a kebab then I'm a banana. Had finished my beer too but they couldn't be bothered to ask if I needed another so I didn't bother. Poor service and poor food. Wasted a lot of time waiting to order, waiting for beer, waiting for food and waiting to pay. I paid, expressed my dissatisfaction that was blamed on a new waitress, and the blandness of the food and left. Will go elsewhere tomorrow. Owner seems unpleasant.

Porta 32 in Covilha is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This modern eatery boasts a warm atmosphere and friendly staff who go out of their way to assist English-speaking guests. Start your meal with delightful snacks like the excellent olive oil and crunchy bread, followed by mouthwatering tapas such as the local egg, potato, and pork mixture or tender octopus.
Nice modern restaurant with good atmosphere The staff was really friendly and helpful, our waitress helped us to find our preferred meal as the menu was available only in Portuguese. My suckling pig was very delicious as well as the barbecue chicken wings. The French fries were served with 3 different sauces.

An amazing place in Covilhã, with delicious snacks, that will leave you full. The couvert was excellent, tasty paté and butter with crunchy bread. The Rissol of Leitão, was amazing, with the sauce being really good. The sandwich was so full of meat I had only half, and saved the other for dinner. The desserts, Bolo de Bolacha e Bolo de Tiramisù, were wonderful. I really recommend this place as one of the best in Covilhã!

Server really tried to accommodate English tourists. We had the place to ourselves. Started off with an excellent olive & bread to start was delicious. We had tapas and the local egg/potato/pork mixture was AMAZING. So was the octopus. I would recommend also ordering a salad or veggie of some sort to balance the fried dishes if you are doing a tapas style dinner.

First of all, I didn't use their accommodation services but this is initially a restaurant, but conveniently leaves out the possibility to rate their food, which is quite mediocre. I went to their Italian part of the restaurant and ate pasta - one of the most boring meals I ever ate. Then, convinced by friends, I gave a chance to the Paco 100 Pressa Club - same thing. None of us was amazed. The food was bland, some of it cold, and definitely overpriced. Despite its amazing location and aesthetics, this restaurant doesn't have so much to offer in terms of food taste and quality.

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant one evening for a romantic dinner and it didn’t disappoint in any way whatsoever. We began with a martini and an Apperol spritz and for starter we had the bruschetta, it was fantastic. For the mains, we had the chefs pizza (Sr Do Carvalho) my boyfriend ordered something different, but mine was the creme de la creme. I tried his, but honestly, I was so in love with my own that I didn’t pay much attention to it. If you go here, I highly strongly suggest you order the same pizza that I did. you will not be disappointed. To finish we each had a dessert, but by the time we had eaten our pizzas, we couldn’t do the desserts the justice they deserved. Service was excellent. Even the chef came to say hello. We had a wonderful experience and any day now I will be returning. The price was also very very reasonable. The only thing I would improve upon is to choose an Italian red wine, instead of the Portuguese one that we decided to have. However that was purely our own mistake and simply down to preference. In conclusion, fabulous all round. Couldn’t ask for more.
Sophia S — Google review
The food here is really good. (we came around dinner time) The portions are nice & come with a lot of side dishes. You must try the Sangria! It’s delicious. The staff was very nice & attentive. Although they seemed a bit unorganized at times. The prices for the location, are a bit high…but considering the portion size of the food you receive, one could say it equals out. Definitely would eat here again. Oh yes, be sure to reserve a table if possible. They fill up quick! 😁

Went to the Italian side after a long day and the adventure starts right from the moment we arrive. There are two sides of the restaurant but there isn't any sign showing where the Italian is or the traditional one. After finding the Italian one, we were welcomed by friendly staff. We got to our table and the atmosphere was nice: some music in the background and very calm environment. We noticed though that the table was a little bit dirty. We ordered our food and it was definitely the worst Italian food I have ever had. We ordered Bruschetta, Garlic bread with cheese and a pizza. Everything was so oily that we weren't even able to finish our pizza. The space is really nice and staff is really friendly but unfortunately the food isn't good which is a shame.

Puro is a delightful surprise with its cozy downstairs room where visitors can relax. It is puro joia da sierra! Food was so delicious that we managed to eat double we usually consume for dinner to not to miss anything special. Cogumelos and Black pudding are highly recommended, panna cota acompanied with clementine ice cream was also must have. My compliments to service. All staff are professionals and sympathetic. Beautiful evening spent here. The staff were so kind and helpful. The Brazilian waiter ( sorry forgotten your name!) was wonderful. Such a romantic atmosphere. Later we sat upstairs by the fire and could even bring our dog into the bar which was appreciated as it was a cold snowy evening outside! Catered for vegetarians ( me) which was important when choosing a restaurant. Fully recommended.

Long day driving back over the mountains and had seb this place in the morning and thought we'd try it. AC on a day that had reached 40°C was very welcome. Great view and comfortable seating. Good menu, reasonably priced and fab quality and good flavour. Gents, you have surpassed yourselves. It was a great visit. I urge others to try it too. You'll unlikely be disappointed as everyone was spot on. Delicious. 2 full and filling courses, water, bread, cola, and 2 glasses of Torre locally made and exclusive to the restaurant wine was excellent. Cannot fault it, including the service was spot on and friendly.. 👍😀

Loved everything about this place. Was very convenient as we stayed at the Luna Hotel and was just a short walk. The restaurant in itself is just so inviting and then you still have the friendliness of the owner and all the staff. They pay special attention to all their customers. The food is divine. Fine dining at an average, affordable price. We had the cod with goat cheese, the entrecote and the old goat stew! The chef still sent over a "little extra" stew. The desserts you start to eat with your eyes before you even start digging in! All made there, not bought. We had the creme brulee crepe and the goats cheese pudding. Both served with a sorbet. Yummy! They then serve you a complimentary liquer from the region. There were 4 to pick from and you can still buy a bottle (or 2)! Highly recommended! This is one place that I will revisit when I return to the Serra da Estrela. To all at daSerra, thank you for a lovely evening and we wish you good fortune!

This place was an amazing surprise. If you go downstairs your will find a cozy room to hang out. We tried the Chuleton (the Portuguese version) and we loved it. The portion is more than enough for two people and the meat is delicious. It comes with fries and amazing mushrooms risotto. The servers and chefs were so friendly. Local wine is served here. A very recommended experience. For the quality meat they offer, the prices are reasonable.

Beautifully located on top of the mountain with an exceptional view over The Valley. Authentic but modern and well maintained lodge with very friendly, open and well educated personal who offer an amazing culinaric experience of traditional food with a very modern twist. Paired with one of the great wines, you’ll definitely have a great evening. Thank you for having us!

Day 2

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Jardim do Lago, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Praia Fluvial de Lavacolhos. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Garden
Jardim do Lago, located a bit further from Covilha's historic center, is a large and pleasant park popular among locals. In the summer, visitors can cool off in the beach pool called Piscina da Praia da Covilha. The park offers beautiful views of the mountains and is family-friendly with playgrounds for children. It features a swimming pool with artificial waves and is home to swans, ducks, fish, and turtles.

The " Jardim do lago" is a beautiful space to enjoy with the family and have a good time. It has a restaurant, café, public bathrooms, an exercise area and of course a large lake with several species to see such as swans, ducks, fish and many turtles. Enjoy this magnificent space.

As far as the outside hanging out places in Covilha go, Lake Garden is one of the best. The water provides much needed freshness (especially in summer), you can sit on the grass and observe some animal that live there (fish, swan, ...). There is also some public fitness equipment there.

It was raining and we didn't have much time, but it was a nice place to spend a few minutes. The park was surprisingly cleaned and with no one around because of the rain, it was a chilled walk in the park :)

Church of Santa Maria Maior

Catholic church
The Church of Santa Maria Maior is a stunning sight with its exterior adorned in traditional blue and white tiles, depicting the story of the Virgin Mary. The gothic Santa Cruz chapel, also known as Capelo do Calvario, is worth exploring for its unique nartex, a separate entrance reserved for specific groups during mass. Located in the upper part of Covilha, this beautiful church offers visitors a chance to admire picturesque buildings and street art in the surrounding area.

The Museu dos Lanifícios in Covilha, Portugal, is a testament to the city's rich history as one of the country's main wool producers. The museum is divided into two buildings filled with historical artifacts and machinery related to the art of wool crafts. It provides a well-organized narrative of an old factory's journey from the 17th century to the 20th century.
If you are interested in wool, industry, history or archeology, this museum is for you. It has two different sites and I recommend visiting both as they complement each other very well.
Débora R — Google review
The museum is very well organized and easy to follow, with an accessible entrance into the world of wool. It tells the story of the textile industry in a clear way, from the oldest processes to the most recent ones. Walking through the museum feels like traveling back in time and living each period of history. It also shows how important Covilhã has been in this industry. A truly enriching visit.
Dos S — Google review
Very interesting museum regarding the woollen textile industry in Covilhã. A very friendly person on reception, you get a video presentation then a self guided tour around the museum itself. Cost €3 per adult less for concessions, toilets on site as well. If you visit the sister museum there is a discount as well.

Explore the charming countryside of Alentejo, Beira Interior, and Tras-os-Montes as you wind through vast olive groves that are integral to Portuguese cuisine. I finally didn't make it to study at this university, due to the lack of support of the admin team. An advice to international students: this university admits you to a class, but then will even not do the minimal steps to support you to get you there. In my case it took a couple of months until my name appeared on the list of the Portuguese authorities (DGES) which would have been responsible to proceed my name to the respective embassy. Without this, no visa. Support in this issue? No or late answers to emails. Difficult to reach by phone - unfriendly, even when friends of mine wenn personally to the admin desk. So why do you admit international students, if you don't support them afterwards??

Nestled in the heart of Covilhã, O Lago offers a delightful dining experience that combines great food with stunning views. Overlooking a picturesque lake and surrounded by lush parkland, this restaurant is perfect for special occasions or simply enjoying a meal with loved ones. Guests rave about the welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff, particularly highlighting Joao's exceptional service.
Really an amazing experience, with great cooking, beverages, and local goodies well presented by the waiter called João. Located in the city center with an extraordinary park view, with the fantastic lake to fulfill the experience. We had grilled lamb and regional red wine recommended by the amazing staff on a very reasonable price for two people (€50 per couple all in). Definitely a place for a special occassion & to visit while in Covilhão region. #VisitBeiraInterior

Extremely rude staff. Stay away. It is not worth it. Covilhã has plenty of beautiful places with much better service and food. I have travelled extensively to several countries and even in Portugal and I don't remember ever meeting such rude staff in my life. I don't expect people to smile if they don't want to, but they go way below that by treating people as if they are doing a favour serving us. They act as if they are paying you to be there and not the other way around. Pathetic! We are paying and the staff still acts like you owe them something. It is a service exchange for crying out loud! If they are not happy, they should learn how to separate their personal life from their professional one or they should not have a restaurant at all. Everyone has problems but people who really care about customers know that the customers are not the ones to blame. Nobody forced them to open the restaurant. They chose to do it. By the way, if you call them out on their behaviour they act worse as if you are the crazy one. I am Portuguese and hence it had nothing to do with a language barrier. Life is made of choices. They made the choice to open the restaurant and still look like they are doing customers a favour. Me, I am making the choice to not return to that den of miserable people.

Terribly rude staff. None of them knows English (yeah, 2025. I know but thats what it is) Waiters don't give a damn about what you ask for, in fact when we were paying for the stuff we ate, a friens of mine showed the pictures of pizzas that they have on Google Maps, pointing that it has nothing to do with what they serve, the waitress lady said "Go to your home and cook it yourself than!". HORRIBLE STAFF WOULDNT RECOMMEND

I stayed at Casa Das Muralhas for two days and I absolutely loved it. The view was outstanding, the room was perfect, great bed, great view, great WiFi. I was so impressed because this is one of the first hotels that had a really nice range of pillow sizes and a perfect one for me. The restored old stone house is really beautiful. The weather was a bit cool but I could not resist a plunge in the pool. It was cool but absolutely refreshing. One awesome feature, the outside rinse-off showers are really unique, basically a control faucet in the stone wall allows you to turn on the water and out from the top of rock the wall comes the water, just like a mountain stream....a wonderful feature! My stay was extremely comfortable and relaxing. The staff was really great and friendly. The parking can be a little challenging given the medieval streets, but be patient and you will find the perfect spot. Everything in town is within close walking distance, but steep which is good if you are active. I give my highest recommendation to Casa das Muralhas. I will stay here again anytime I am in Covilha. Also. please check out the restaurant, it is delicious. Update: returned with my family for a one night stay. Accommodations were great and the restaurant (dinner and breakfast) were delicious. The food is creative and the service is perfect, overall a very nice vibe.
Keith S — Google review
I absolutely loved this hotel. The pre arrival communication was wonderful, check in easy and informative and the room was fantastic. I treated myself to higher view overlooking the town and valley. The pool was wonderful and deliciously quiet for my liking, but in high season, the atmosphere of lots of people would be great. Their in-house restaurant was superb. The food was of the highest quality and the waiter's wine knowledge and explanations was great; best b of all was the ability to have wonderful wines by the glass and try a few regions over dinner. Breakfast was tailored and friendly again highlighted regional produce. I'm rarely impressed but I can't recommend this place highly enough.
Shani D — Google review
We've stayed for some nights at the hotel and the service was great. The staff is very nice and caring. The room had a lot of space and was extremely clean. The view from the room was also very nice and the temperature was easily adjustable. There is a swimming pool which is also very nice. There is Netflix service for free in all the rooms and the internet speed is one of the best I found in a hotel. The location is good but in the old town which means some difficulties bringing the car (specially if a large one) and some challenges parking during the high season. The access to the hotel rooms is not easy for people with reduced mobility, at least from this experience. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Pizza restaurant
Mamma Mia, a pizza restaurant, offers delicious and satisfying food at reasonable prices. The medium-sized pizzas are generously portioned, making them ideal for those with big appetites. The ambiance is cool and comfortable, providing a pleasant dining experience. The place is popular but not overly crowded, ensuring a good level of service. While the pizzas are decent, they fall short of being exceptional as the tomato sauce tends to make the toppings move around on the pizza.

When we arrived we asked to be seated outside and it seems to have annoyed them as they were at first visibly irritated and then complained. A pathetic small „museum“ with few exhibits that touches cheese making just on the surface. All in Portguese and as non Portuguese speakers we were duly ignored by the „ lady of the house“. A waste of time and money! And in stark contrast to the extremely friendly reception and brilliant presentation at the Covilhã museum we visited just before.

Our visit to the Cheese Museum today was an absolute delight from start to finish. The guide (I believe to be called Ms Paula) was not only informative but also incredibly fun, knowledgeable, and has made the entire experience absolutely fascinating. The cheese tasting at the end was a highlight. An unexpected and heartwarming gesture from a fellow participant, whom without knowing anyone, generously shared a bottle of wine with all the guests has turned the visit into a truly unforgettable experience. Thanks to Filipe and his wife! It was a shame not having a chance to buy cheese from the shop. The visit to this museum is highly recommended!

Arrived around 4:10pm with the knowledge that the museum would be closing today at 5:30pm. No one was at the front desk but eventually the friendly staff person came out to say she had just started giving a tour and let us know we could join but that we would miss some information. We had hoped it would be a self guided museum but it seems that there are guided tours only. I'm not sure of the time frames of the tours but the woman said that it would be the last one she did that day - so I suggest go earlier that 4:10pm on a Saturday. The information was interesting and lots of artifacts and pictures. Unfortunately there is a lot of standing, they did have a chair for my grandmother to sit but she didn't feel that she could stay the whole time. But I understand that they give a cheese sample at the end of the tour.

The mix of industrial machines and modern art creates a very interesting atmosphere, making it a great place to explore and shop for unique items at great prices. Overall, it's described as a breathtaking and unexpected place with plenty to offer.
I love this place! ❤️ This visit was my third time at the NewHandLab. If you go to Covilhã, you should definitely visit this spot. This establishment, which used to be a wool production factory, has become a historical heritage site that tells one of Covilhã's many stories. It's an inspiring place that awakens your inner child. When you walk through its halls, you're captivated by the vibrant colors and beautiful creations from both permanent and temporary artists. Each piece tells a different story, yet every story resonates and touches your heart in its own way. What's truly special is how this place preserves the traditional soul of wool creations while seamlessly integrating new technologies, materials, and events. It's a must-see destination, along with the magnificent Serra da Estrella mountains that surround the city.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is a historic church located in the center of Covilhã, Portugal. It is part of the former Convent of São Francisco, dating back to the 16th century. The church features an original late Gothic style portal and has undergone various architectural changes over time, including baroque and revivalist elements on its facade.
You can visit the church for free, if you come to visit Covilhã, you need to get in this church. The inside is really beautiful. We had the chance to speak with the lady who is the guardian of the church, she explained to us the story of the church and the story of the person who discovered Brazil, who is buried in the church with his son. She was really nice, she took the time to tell the stories. And the church looks so small from the outside but is bigger inside. A place to visit for all tourists who love visiting churches👍

(Translated by Google) The Church of the Virgin of the Conception, belonging to the disappeared Convent of San Francisco built in the 16th century, maintains the original portal in late Gothic style, although the façade reveals baroque and revivalist alterations carried out throughout its history. In the 19th century, at the time when the convent was closed, the space was converted into a wool manufacturing factory, keeping the church open for worship. Inside, it is worth admiring the four-pointed star vault and the side chapels from the 16th century, belonging to the Rodrigo de Castro family to which the Mayor of Belmonte belonged. In the main chapel, the cover is made of boxes, in which you can see paintings alluding to the life of Christ. The image of Saint Francis stands out from the golden carving panels that cover the walls.

The floor of the chapel is made of wood and needs to be restored. Excellent description of the story of Christ in the chapel. A very characteristic entrance in the Gothic style. It has stained glass windows, which illuminate a large part of the chapel. It has a second floor that can be accessed through the interior corridors. It is already equipped with surveillance cameras. I recommend visiting it and even watching the celebration. (Original) Excelente capela situada no centro da Covilhã. Neste momento as abóbadas interiores foram praticamente todas restauradas. It was like embarking on a journey through time, where the stories told, the details engraved in the rock of the galleries, the various types of minerals, led us to imagine how difficult the mining and living conditions of the miners must have been at the time of their work. We also had the pleasure of observing the bats that live in the mine up close, as well as the various exclusive wines that are maturing. The whole tour was spectacular, we loved the experience, a very pleasant guided tour, provided by two very friendly people, clearly knowledgeable and informative on the subject. Before leaving, we had some gininhas and some souvenirs and, of course, some TNT to blow the rock away at home ;) I highly recommend the experience! Alkimya is a charming bistro and wine bar located in the heart of old Covilha in Serra da Estrela. The restaurant offers a wonderful dining experience with great options for vegans, vegetarians, and those with gluten sensitivities. The historic building creates a unique atmosphere that combines old and new elements. The staff, including Fernando and Joanna, are friendly and attentive, providing excellent service.
Ambiente and service leaves nothing to be desired. The menu offers a great variety and food presentation and taste live up to the overall dining experience. Try the brulee sobremesa!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved this restaurant! The food was incredibly delicious, the service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was so cozy and relaxing. The interior has many beautiful details that make the place feel special and welcoming. I highly recommend Sonata Bistrô to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Covilhã!

It was supposed to be an elegant space with good food worth its price. My husband and I ordered 2 croquettes, octopus salad, and a steak. Croquettes were small, salty, and cold, not worth 9 Euros for sure!!! Then the salad essentially consisted of just an octopus taken out of the fridge, along with bits of tomato and onion. The octopus was hard to chew and stayed between my teeth. It was like trying to eat an old shoe. When it comes to the steak, it was good enough, however the rice seemed cheap and tasted like plastic. Halloween decorations in a place like that were way too overdone. From the positives, the music and interior are good and there is a place for changing baby diapers. Also the waitress was nice.

An absolute gem of a restaurant! 🌱 As someone who’s always on the lookout for great vegan food, I can honestly say their vegan options are some of the best I’ve ever tried — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The place itself is stylish and welcoming, with thoughtful decoration that makes the whole experience even better. The staff are genuinely friendly, attentive, and go above and beyond to make you feel at home. Service is impressively fast — a big plus when dining with kids — yet nothing feels rushed. You can tell they pay attention to every detail, from the plating to the little touches that make you feel cared for. And the prices? More than fair for the quality and portion sizes you get. It’s rare to find this level of food and service without a huge bill at the end. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be back!

This restaurant name is the phonetic spelling of "alquimia" (alchemy), and that is exactly what you would think is going on in this charming hidden gem in the heart of old Covilhã in Serra da Estrela. When we first arrived the restaurant was empty and our host was training a new waiter so was being shadowed rather alarmingly in everything from placing cutlery to taking the order. Set in a cosy old stone building with walls covered in textile art (the specialty of Covilhã), books, musical instruments and other quirky decorations. The menu is presented entirely in Portuguese (which is a good indication of the quality to be expected) and is mainly seasonal and local. Our host could not have been more accommodating or welcoming - he learned and addressed us both by our first names, he made recommendations when asked, and he cracked jokes all the way through the meal as well. The couvert (which we explicitly requested) was herbed butter, olive tapenade, 4 types of bread and organic olive oil. All delicious, especially the cornbread - divine. We asked for duck breast in honey, port and orange with puree sweet potato, and slow-braised pork cheeks with pumpkin and greens. Both were popping with flavour and incredibly moreish. Our host chastised us for not cleaning the entire plate, but we explained this was only so we would have space for dessert. We asked for the salted caramel chocolate cake with cinnamon ice cream (what a revelation that was! Such flavour), and a little glass of port to go with it. I would return in a heartbeat, and I think I shall!

A wonderful overall experience five stars!! Front of house : The historic building (which Fernando will happily talk about), is a beautiful marriage of old and new to create a unique dining experience. The staff, both Fernando and Joanna, were friendly, attentive and welcoming. They both seemed ro relish a chance to practice their English while i practiced my Portuguese. Back of house: overall the food was excellent. The pheasant canja we chose for starters was rich and perfecrly seasoned. Some canja are too salty for my tastes but all the flavours here were brought to the fore and a delight. We decided to go for a selection of petiscos instead of mains. I could not decide which was my favourite. The sausage with curry and apple flavours, the fresh salada do Pomar, or the salmon ceviche. Everyrhing was beautifully presented. Not really a dessert person, but walking around the steep streets of Covilha meant i felt i could be a little naughty. Was not disappointed. Overall a wonderful experience and would recommend to everyone.

Located in Covilha, Portugal, Hamburgueria Beirã is a family-owned restaurant with a charming garden where guests can enjoy their meals. The establishment offers a variety of burgers, including fish and vegetarian options, made with quality ingredients. The friendly staff provides excellent service and is knowledgeable about the menu, offering recommendations such as pairing the burgers with passion fruit sangria. In addition to delicious homemade chips served with the burgers, patrons can indulge in delightful desserts like brownies.
It's a nice place with lovely garden. Family business (or at least it seems like). Prices are ok. We tried fish burgers, good quality ingredients, really delightful. Good choice of burgers, vegetarian option too. Nice that not all the burgers have cheese, because not everyone can eat it 😊 Service super friendly, when they understood that we gonna share burgers, they cutted it for us and placed half and half on the plate. I am not the fan of this type of potatoes, thats the thing I would change only 😊 good variety of drinks!

It is very difficult to find a gluten-free, vegetarian dish in the city, that is not fish or salad! I arrived and was greeted with kindness and niceness! There are 5 gluten-free vegetarian hamburgers. I loved the Erada and the Peraboa and highly recommended it (served without the bun). My partner ate a meat hamburger

I try not to give out 1 star ratings, although that one was pretty close. At first I have to say that staff/service was friendly. Management on the other hand was poor at least. There was a lot of running around (way to much for the number of costumers at the given moment) and a lot of freshly made food was brought back to the kitchen - we assumed at the time they are just having a bad day. After about 1 hour we got the hamburgers and the fries. Good lord... Starting with fries: I admire you going with the chips instead of friest, because making those taste good and fresh is harder. Got to say that out chips was cold and chewy in contrast to hot and crunchy. Burger patty was the biggest disappointment. Overcooked and totally dry, in part because the meat is minced too much. At the end, it took us nearly 10mins to pay (after standing at the desk and waitress acknowledging us).
