Mavrovouni Beach is a spacious, sandy beach with picturesque mountain views located in Gythio. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and abundant wildlife, including sea creatures, birds and butterflies. The area surrounding the beach offers a tranquil atmosphere with friendly locals who speak English fluently. Visitors can enjoy various water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, as well as indulge in delicious oceanfront dining options.
Ocean Bar offers free umbrellas with a purchase from the restauraunt/bar. Great beach fir smimming and important turtle nesting ground with nests protected by local groups.
Leah W — Google review
It’s a really nice beach for the area to say the least. Has a few cafe and resto bars along the beach that offer chair and umbrella rentals along with food and drinks as well. I definitely recommend a visit here if in this local area.
VoudouLounge — Google review
We've been to five beaches around this area, and this was our favorite so far. The water was very clean and clear, the tiny pebble beach was easy to walk on, and the slope was perfect into the water. Trees to park under for shade and a shower to rinse off. The loungers were clean, well kept, and comfortable but cost money to use. We felt it was worth the cost. We will be back!
Eric S — Google review
Long, small pebbly, with all amenities necessary. Very good option if in the area
Adina I — Google review
Great beach with lounge chairs and service. Nice clean water. Beach drops off into the deep very quickly so if you can't swim be careful as I saw no lifeguards.
John G — Google review
Beautiful beach in the morning, in the afternoon there are a lot of waves, in the evening it is the same without waves and calm. There are a lot of rocks on the side, nice for diving, there are fish and shells.
Nadja — Google review
One of the most beautiful sandy long beaches with crystal clear water of Peloponnese, is Mavrovouni beach near the town of Gytheion. Among other is a perfect place for 'wind riders' as many Wind surfers or Kite surfers are visiting this place for the strong winds !
Cos T — Google review
Beautiful beach. "Sandy" beach (I.e. tiny pebbles! Not great with family (kids) as it gets deep quick, and when we arrived, waves were pretty big and did not feel comfortable! Apparently, turtles nesting on this beach, which would be cool to see (we did not). Assuming no info on rip currents means there are none despite large waves! Vist morning as wind picks up in afternoon!!

Island
Nisis Kranai, also known as Marathonisi, is a charming little island just off the coast of Gytheio, linked to the mainland by a historic causeway built in 1898. This picturesque spot is often referred to as 'fennel-island' due to the abundance of this herb that flourishes here. The island boasts lush pine forests and offers stunning views of Gythio's amphitheater-like layout adorned with neoclassical architecture.
Small island next to the city which includes a tower-museum and a lighthouse. Nice views of the city and Taygetos mountain.

Tzannetakis Tower, located on Kranai, is a historical site dating back to the Ottoman rule. The tower stands as a symbol of the country's fight for freedom and has witnessed various periods of history, from the Byzantine Empire to the Greek Revolution.
Very beautiful tower, unfortunately it is permanently closed and you can’t get inside or visit. The outside country is beautiful though and worth a visit.

Another place.. another tower… very interesting building.. but as usual for the town of Githio closed.. when they will understand that these places must be open… maybe because they just want the tourist just to eat at the restaurants and drink coffee.. nothing else.. or maybe not… we will never get an answer for this

La Boheme Bar Food & Style is a must-visit for those seeking a modern dining experience with breathtaking views of the harbor. This trendy spot offers an array of creative cocktails and innovative Mediterranean dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. For a more traditional Greek experience, you can explore the vibrant marketplace nearby, where local delights like loukoumades and freshly squeezed orange juice await. In Gytheio, you'll find diverse dining options that cater to every palate.
We had a wonderful dinner at La Boheme. The restaurant combines the charm of a beautifully restored neoclassical building with an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. The menu offers elevated Greek cuisine—traditional flavors reimagined with creativity and finesse. Every dish we tried was thoughtfully prepared, delicious, and beautifully presented. The service was attentive, warm, and professional, adding to the overall experience. La Boheme is the perfect place if you are looking for authentic Greek food with a refined twist, in a stylish setting by the sea. Highly recommended!
Aris S — Google review
We were there two times for late breakfast (brunch). The location is rather nice beneath the sea, there are places in the sun (if it's shining) and in the shadow as well. The French Toast was tasty but lacked cinnamon (rather sad for me as I love cinnamon). The walnuts which came with it tasted a bit old. The mani omelett was really delicious as was the savoury pancakes. The super bowl is hardly a bowl but more or less only yogurt with very little fruit. It came with walnuts instead of the stated paranuts (again sad for me as I love paranuts as well). The yogurt (super bowl) and the pancakes were the same price which is not really justifiable. So in total I would recommend eating here if one is not restricted to vegetarian food as this might not be their strength.
Lena F — Google review
It has a lovely little terrace brunch. If you get there early, it is very quiet with no trouble to park. The food was exceptional. I plan to return to try more of the menu.
Ryan L — Google review
Really, really love this place ❤️ Great food, great service, the sweetest staff and great atmosphere. A jewel amongst all the Classical Greek restaurants. Original and tasty recipes based on the Italian kitchen. The fungi were terrific, as well as the risotto. And that with a view to die for and fantastic deserts on the house. Thank you so much for two lovely evenings, we hope to be back some day soon!!
Zaskia Z — Google review
Too expensive, the quality of both food and drinks is just regular, the stuff has not been polite any of the times I have been there. I give it 3 stars only because it is in Gytheio, therefore has a nice view and because it is beautifully renovated.
Artemis R — Google review
We tried this restaurant for dinner and were very disappointed. The view is beautiful and the waitress was friendly but the food was way below expectations, we did not finish our plates. Also, there is no English menu (Greek only).

The ancient theater of Gytheio is a well-preserved site located on the northern edge of the modern town. Situated on a hill slope next to a military base, this small theater dates back to the 1st century A.D. and was discovered by Greek archaeologist Dimitris Skias in 1891. Despite its proximity to modern buildings and shops, it offers an impressive glimpse into history.
Worth the trip for the theatre alone. Amazingly impressive to see up close. And in regular use. Not too crowded when we went. Children go free.
Geoff H — Google review
This is the ancient theatre of Githio. Abandoned , locked, green that it is almost more than a meter high. No one care about it. So you can’t see the theatre but you can imagine it. Yes it is near by a military camp but no one will say you something, if you don’t take photos of the military camp. Of course if you start the photos.. of course they will have a word with you. It is common sense in all countries that photography and military places are a no go.
Antonis M — Google review
Small but spectacular ruins, unfortunatelly surrounded by fence, no sign about opening hours. So sad
Bence B — Google review
The ancient theater of Gytheio is a small preserved theater, located in the north edge of the modern settlement of Gytheio, on a slope of a hill, beside a military base. The theater was one of the most important archaeological sites in the area and it was built during the Roman period, at the 1st century A.D. The site was discovered and excavated by the Greek archeologist Dimitris Skias at 1891. The theater had simple stone seats in all rows except of the first row that contained backrests and was made of marble for the officials (the V.I.P.s). During the Roman period there were thymelic performances at the site (The thymelic was song contest, dedicated to god Dionysos), which included a parade and sacrifices to the Roman emperors. The fenced site that might look a bit abandoned today, hosts during the summer some cultural events, such as ancient drama performances, public speeches, and music concerts as part of the Festival of Gythio. However, the site still requires some serious renovation and restoration works as well as basic things like signs and historical explanation, in order to bring him back to his glory days.
Y.H. — Google review
The theatre looks in reasonable condition and is worth a view over the fence as the soldiers at the army base next door watch you closely. As with the other ancient ruins in Gytheio the gate is closed and you cannot get close to the ruins, which is a shame.
Simon P — Google review
Very small, only to see from outside through a fence. There are much nicer ones. Only come here, if you pass otherwise not worth the way.
TheEvdriver — Google review
There is no way in. Unfortunately, nobody takes care of it. Looks very sad 😔

The friendly staff provides excellent service while the atmosphere exudes warmth and hospitality. Excellent seafood restaurant running by a family. The restaurant was full of local people which is a good sign. The fish were fresh and the fries were homemade (very rare nowadays). They gave us a complementary dessert: homemade blood orange marmalade :) Very affordable price. Thanks!

Lovely family taverna with a seaside view and excellent traditional Greek menu and very affordable prices. Good portions too. Waitstaff not overly friendly but owner seemed nice.

Very good food. We had grilled fish, grilled shrimp and stuffed vegetables, which were delicious. Good value. Very tasty.
Tali R — Google review
Fantastic place for seafood. We enjoyed a grilled sea bream (dorade), grilled shrimp and fried anchovis. With a portion of chickpea fritters (basically falafel), a mixed salad and some bread it was more than enough for 2 people. The fried squid that other tables got also looked delicious. Note: the house rose is great with the fish and is only €3.50 for 500ml. The value for money here is incredible (€43.50 in total). Service could have been a bit quicker but staff was very welcoming and friendly overall. Will visit again!

The Greek restaurant "O Kipos" offers delicious home-cooked cuisine in a charming garden setting with appropriate lighting and music. The ambience is enhanced by a soothing fountain at night, creating a relaxing atmosphere to complement your wine. The service is excellent, and it appears to be family-owned and operated with genuinely kind staff. The prices are reasonable, and the menu can accommodate various preferences, including traditional Greek dishes and grilled meats.

Very tasty home-cooked food on a garden setting with just the right amount of lighting and music volume - bonus points for the fountain at nights providing some very relaxing ambience to go along with your wine. Service was great, it looks family owned and operated and the people there are genuinely sweet. Prices are fine and menu wise any needs can be accommodated be it Greek "yiayia" cuisine or grilled meats, since we ate there 4 times and sampled pretty much everything, all plates ranging from good to extremely good. It's a shame the other two restaurants seem to have more customers since they cannot hold a candle to this place in the slightest (albeit they are decent too) Protip: Their "keftedakia" were divine.
Ares — Google review
Love this place! Ate there two times in three days, returning for the second time after a meal at another nearby taverna wasn’t as good. This place has excellent food, friendly staff, and beautiful outdoor seating area. We especially enjoyed the chicken souvlaki, special pizza, saganaki, and local sausage. We also appreciated the apparent family-run nature of the business and the fact that it is tucked away in a residential part of Mavrovouni, away from the crowded main drag of Gytheio. Even though we’re from the US and don’t speak Greek, and the gentleman who apparently runs the place doesn’t speak English, we were able to communicate enough with him and his staff (family members, we assume) to order our food and settle the bill. Anyway, we highly recommend this place to anyone passing through the area. You won’t be disappointed!

Nisaki, a Greek restaurant in Nhsaki, is an excellent destination with a serene ambiance and stunning views. We didn't expect this quality - Dishes outstanding, view of city Gythio is exceptional, best customer service ! The service team was knowledgeable, cared out their patrons and were super polite. Congratulations to the chef and kitchen staff, and keep up the great work!!! In my opinion, this is certainly one of the best restaurants in Gythio!! They have a large variety of dishes, with a combination of traditional and non-traditional plates. The restaurant Δυόσμος - Μεζεδοποτείο in Gytheio is highly recommended for its impressive decor and cleanliness. Over the past two years, numerous customers have been pleased with the food's quality, reasonable prices, and attentive service. The dinner menu offers a delightful selection of dishes, while lunchtime features additional daily specials that are exceptionally delicious.
Food was really delicious on both our visits while staying in Gytheio. Diosmos has a nice environment and the people working there are really kind. Must try dish the "Pork tenderloin with wine and mashed potatoes".

Outstanding and innovative cuisine with really excellent main courses and salads and some novel appetisers. Away from the tourist waterfront and concentrating on offering a really good experience at reasonable cost. Good list of house wines and a small selection of top class Peloponnese wines. Try the Kodonitsa!

What an outstanding elevated dining experience in a small unpretentious town! Great service but do be warned that they will get to you when they get to you and asking too many questions was not well received by the older lady running the front of the house (not unheard of in mom & pop places in Greece). The place must always be packed (locals and tourists alike). Every dish looked Instagram-worthy. 😅 If this was close to home, I'd go there all the time. Very reasonably priced, too! I had half a bottle's worth of wine, a ginormous steak (with French fries), tzatziki, and spaghetti and meatballs for my son. The bill was only €45. 🤯 They treat you with a dessert at the end, which was delicious! 😋 Avoid sitting in the back in the summer, it was a sweat lodge. 😅

I had a fantastic experience at Diosmos! The service was absolutely amazing — attentive, friendly, and fast. The food was fresh, flavorful, and authentically Greek. Every dish was beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. Highly recommend for anyone craving high-quality Mediterranean cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere!

Tasty dishes and pretty atmosphere, however quite expensive. Theres not a main course less than 13€ (roughly 15$) and the quantity is small. In my opinion, you cant be satisfied without at least 2 side dishes which results in a bill around 20-25euros per person (roughly 23-29$).

Probably the best food in Gytheio. We had an amazing Mani Pitta, and pork tenderloin with mushrooms and mashed potatoes.
