Ancient Ruins
Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136, is a medieval Cistercian monastery known for its well-maintained ruins and historical significance. It is the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart and features intricate stonework details, including a famous pig gargoyle playing the bagpipes. Visitors can explore the grounds, gardens, and museum with a single ticket. The abbey has a rich history dating back to the 7th century and was rebuilt by Robert the Bruce.
Good information boards and staff on entry informative. Currently the Abbey itself cannot be entered due to high-level maintenance work. Yet still the building is able to impress and inspire. Dogs welcome in all areas except the museum, and water bowls provided. Look out especially for The bagpipe playing pig! Spent about an hour and a half here wandering round reading information boards and soaking up the atmosphere.

The old Abbey in Melrose, Scotland is a fantastic place to visit for not only history but architectural photography. When we visited late September 2025, you couldn't actually walk into the Abbey itself because of the danger of falling masonry. If you don't mind taking photographs and trying to keep the fencing out of view, then it's great for photography. I love zooming into the ancient gargoyles and trying to get glimpses inside the Abbey. Well worth the visit and we found it quite easy to park.
Mark R — Google review
Visited Melrose and its abbey while on holiday in Scotland. The abbey is conveniently just across the road from a pay and display car park (there are also electric charge points). Entrance is through a small gift shop. Paid a reduced admission fee of £3.85, which included a small donation, because you can't actually go inside the abbey due to renovations and danger from falling masonry. But it was well worth taking the free guided tour around the abbey grounds. John was a great guide, very informative, giving us a full account of the abbey's history and adding a couple of humorous anecdotes as he showed us first around the graveyard and then the foundations of the monks' living quarters, kitchen and cloisters. The abbey church, with its soaring Gothic arches and windows, and a wealth of medieval stone carving, was majestic and awe-inspiring in spite of all the scaffolding and safety barriers. Not to be missed were the grave of one of the original masons who worked on the abbey, the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart, and the famous bagpipe playing pig! There are info boards around the site with artist's impressions that gave me a real sense of how grand this abbey once looked. The shop has themed gifts and some interesting books, and you can also buy ice-cream here. The young man at the ticket desk was so friendly and helpful, even recommending a nearby café where I could get lunch. Despite the renovations and limited access, Melrose Abbey is well worth a visit.
Valerie H — Google review
Great for a quick stop or a lingering one. The Abbey grounds include the structure, garden and picnic areas, and a museum. We enjoyed a leisurely tour.
Lessley D — Google review
We visited Melrose Abbey in July 2025. It would have been such a beautiful place to visit, were it not for the fact that this abbey is also undergoing major renovations. I don't know what's going on, but it seems that every abbey in the area is currently undergoing renovation work. Perhaps a lot of subsidy money has become available? They are all covered in scaffolding, which makes visiting them less pleasant because of all the scaffolding on the outside and inside.
Bram S — Google review
An excellent example of medieval architecture with English and french influences. Well organised grounds with good information boards and a similar excellent audio guide system to Jedburgh abbey which coupled with the guide map with location points on it allows you to view all the key points with plenty of information. Additional sections on the guide give details of associated events such as the legend of William Wallaces heart. Helpfully staff please ty of benches to sit and take in the views and a three d printed copy of the bagpipe playing pig for you to study. Acces for less abled is pretty good with ramps and mats to help in wet weather though the ground in the cemetery could be challenging.Dont miss the small but excellent museum found by exciting the grounds over the small bridge and through the black gate crossing the road and enteting into the house well worth a visit. Entrance using English heritage membership is free. Only reason for not giving five stars is that conservation work means you can not go into the building.
Leigh H — Google review
If you are lucky enough to get a guided this will be an even better experience. After you have done the Abbey and marvelled at the time, energy and skill that must have gone into building it, go to the Museum. Well worth a visit. Parking is possible in the street outside the Abbey Grounds. Priorwood Gardens not really worth visiting. Nor is Harmony Garden. I cannot stress enough how much you will benefit in your appreciation of the ruins if you can get a free guided tour with an enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide

History Museums
The Trimontium Museum, located on Market Square, offers a fascinating journey back in time to the Roman era. It showcases the discoveries from excavations led by James Curle, revealing the existence of the Trimontium fort near Newstead. This fort, named after the Eildon Hills' three peaks, was a significant Roman military outpost north of Hadrian's Wall.
We made a brief visit to this excellent museum earlier in June as part of a visit to Melrose. Extremely impressed - very friendly front-of-house team, high quality of presentation and layout, two very good introductory films (about the Romans in Britain, and Iron Age Scotland), fascinating exhibits. We also booked separately a guided walking tour of the Roman Fort site - we decided on the shorter version, starting from the nearby village of Newstead, lasting about an hour and a half. This too was really good, led by our enthusiastic and informative guide Geraldine, and gave a real sense of what this pretty large and significant Roman site would have been like in its heyday. (There are a good number of information panels around the site, but probably not easy to find them all on your own.) Our museum tickets are valid for a year, so we'll be back for a further visit next time we're in the Scottish Borders.
Mike C — Google review
The museum is a lovely place full of history. The staff are lovely and friendly and the artifacts are amazing. I also went on the longer of the 2 walks to the Fort Site, and the guide we had was a lovely fun lady who was full of knowledge of the history of not only the fort, but the Abbey and the surrounding area.
Cheralyn J — Google review
Informative museum about the Roman Fort, which is situated a short distance away. There is a very good Virtual Reality tour available, which shows the layout of the Fort as it would have been. There are toilets and a gift shop on site. Car parking is available a short walk away for long stay, but if you are going to be there less than an hour there is some straight opposite. Both options are free. Staff are very friendly and well informed.
Anthony B — Google review
It's really worth paying for the VR tour of Trimontium. Staff really friendly. Easy to fit this onto a daytrip to Melrose. I also drove to the actual site which has information boards dotted around the edge of the field.
Caroline D — Google review
Very small museum, one room, but packs a punch. Shop; desk with extremely knowledgeable, helpful, welcoming staff; videos and interactive displays. Has some wonderful Roman artefacts on display and is well worth a visit. Great little displays of amazing collections of intact oil lamps and bronze axe heads. Really enjoyed my visit, thank you.
Photos R — Google review
Visited this fabulous museum while travelling in the area of Montrose. It is really interesting to find out more about Roman occupation in this area of Scotland. Orrigionating in the North East of England I have wondered how the Roman occupation impacted Scottish life on the northern side of Hadrians wall and this museum was able to fulfil many of the questions that I had. Not only is the museum interesting, it is in a beautiful building which is interesting in itself and staffed by very knowledgeable, nice people who make the whole experience enjoyable.
Rosemarie M — Google review
Cracking little museum. Staff were very friendly and pleasant. The museum itself is not that big but a great collection of artifacts and good to see a fair mention given to the local people, rather than just the Roman invaders. The VR experience is excellent and easily worth the extra £8.
Dog W — Google review
Although modest in size, this museum is replete with fascinating artefacts; the staff could not be more amiable, exhibiting an exceptional depth of knowledge and a willingness to assist. The inclusion of videos and interactive displays further enriches the experience. I truly relished my visit, my heartfelt thanks.

The club offers well-organized training sessions for boys, girls, and adults, with dedicated coaches. The grounds feature a lovely setting with a community feel and are steeped in history.

Such a lovely location to watch rugby. A knowledgeable crowd and there's usually no problem finding a good seat to watch the match.
James R — Google review
Went to Melrose for the u18 invitational on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we were stuck out on a field on some farmland, in a valley, surrounded by rolling hills and lush green trees so that the big boys and girls could play at the stadium, with the bars and food and suchlike. It was actually rather nice. Sunday! We were at the stadium! Imagine the excitement! Well, our games were played to the soundtrack of grumpy hungover folks, pulling down the entertainment and drone of generators pumping Saturdays waste from the umpteen thunder boxes about the place, getting them ready for collection! Top stuff!

Not there for Rugby, but Football! Daughter is training with the age group girls, and there's so many boys, girls, adults alike train and play on a Wednesday night. All very well organised, and attended. Coaches are great. Having played rugby and watched rugby over many years at the Greenyards, lots of memories made there also.

Nestled in the picturesque town of Melrose, Provender Restaurant & Bar is a delightful culinary treasure that food enthusiasts simply cannot miss. This family-run establishment offers an impressive menu that beautifully marries Scottish and British flavors, all crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The head chef, Christian Edwardson, brings his expertise from working under the esteemed Pierre Koffmann to create dishes that are both innovative and delicious. Guests rave about the outstanding venison and appreciate the thoughtful gluten-free options available.
We had a great time and food was very well made. We had 2 starter (no pictures sorry) and two mains each. The shrimps/lobster and pigeon as a starters and turkey and Gnocchi as a main. We were stuffed and couldn’t go through with the very tempting chocolate fondue. The quality of the food is great and clearly cooked with knowledgeable hands, tasty ingredients paired to perfections, also the mix of consistencies on the gnocchi was great! I will definitely go back, well done to the kitchen and floor team!

Came here with my mum and grandmother for a family lunch. Food was nothing but exceptional. We had 3 starters , 3 different mains and dessert and the dishes did not disappoint… full of flavour and great presentation. The staff were very kind and attentive and if you are ever in Melrose this is a must stop! Thank you to the staff at the Provender :)
Heather D — Google review
Excellent food served by attentive staff. We always visit Provender when holidaying in Melrose and it never disappoints. It is so good to see a restaurant still striving for quality at reasonable prices when so many others have increased their prices whilst providing mediocre food. Keep up the good work.
Susan D — Google review
Very good food and kind and hospitable service throughout with a tremendous presentation of fresh seafood and beautifully cooked vegetables.
Robert F — Google review
An evening meal for two. We really enjoyed it, once again - cocktails to start with arrived swiftly and gave us time to peruse the menu. We started off with two different oyster dishes which were both really good, especially the tempura ones with tartar sauce. Both starters (crab and scallops with haddock) and mains (pigeon breast with haggis bonbons and bavette steak) were delightful, well seasoned and cooked and we'll enjoyed! Wine list was to our liking too and lovely white and red was enjoyable with our dishes. Service was attentive, warm and friendly, lovely to have a long chat with a member of staff about their food. Atmosphere in the restaurant was calm despite it being busy. It's one of our favorite restaurants in the north east, never disappoints, and we definitely return!

We had an absolutely outstanding meal at Provender. The atmosphere was relaxed yet refined with attentive service that made us feel genuinely welcome. I ordered the bouillabaisse which was rich, aromatic and beautifully balanced - portion very generous. Start to finish, the meal was completely memorable!

Sights & Landmarks
Leaderfoot Viaduct is a remarkable sight that majestically spans the Tweed River. The viaduct boasts stunning architecture and has stood the test of time. Visitors can enjoy ample free parking nearby and take in the view from two bridges, one for pedestrians and one for vehicles. Although walking along the viaduct itself is not permitted, there are walking routes in the vicinity to explore.
Very impressive as is the old bridge next to it. Has to be the only post box I have ever seen with GR on it. The viaduct always makes me wonder how Beaching ever got away with ripping up all the railways around the UK. Just imaging being able to jump on a train these days and be able to cross these amazing structures. The amount of places these railways went to always amazes me.
Matt H — Google review
Ideal stop to take in some fantastic engineering of the past. Plenty of space to park and get out for a bit of fresh air.

The place is beautiful. Majestic Viaduct. The landscape conveys calm... I loved seeing him with the reddish light of the sunset. BEAUTIFUL!!... But the Midges made me run!!..🤣
Javisa A — Google review
Leaderfoot Viaduct is one of the most striking landmarks in the Scottish Borders — a sweeping 19th-century railway bridge that spans the River Tweed near Melrose. Its 19 graceful stone arches rise high above the valley, perfectly framed by rolling hills and the quiet countryside. We stopped to admire it from the nearby lay-by and footpath, where you can take in the full view of the viaduct reflected in the river below. It’s incredibly peaceful — birdsong, flowing water, and the sense of history that lingers long after the trains stopped running. It’s a dream for photographers and anyone who loves heritage engineering or scenic walks. Elegant, timeless, and beautifully preserved — Leaderfoot Viaduct is one of those sights that makes you pause just to take it all in.
Tasha ( — Google review
Great place to take in the scenery great photo opportunities of the 3 bridges, beautiful piece of engineering
Neal S — Google review
Beautiful piece of historical architecture. The weather on the day was perfect. Although the viaduct isn't operational, it is still stunning to look at.
Vibhas C — Google review
The Leaderfoot Viaduct is a disused railway bridge near Melrose, Scotland, built in 1863 to carry the Berwickshire Railway over the River Tweed. The viaduct, also known as Drygrange Viaduct, is a notable example of Victorian engineering and a popular landmark for walkers and photographers. An excellent place to visit. You won't spend a long time here unless you want to do some hiking, but it's a great feature to photograph.

Handy location with great scenery and peaceful setting. Food was great - I had scallops and my wife fish and chips with house white excellent: All well priced. Breakfast was inclusive and offered great choice - full Scottish was nice. Room was superb, bed very comfortable. The shower was the most powerful ever - I could have been done in 45 seconds! Staff very friendly and helpful. We will be back!

Amazing staff and you shown us kindness and great hospitality. Wondered off the street and asked if they had a quiet spot in the corner out of the way of other diners so we could bring our nervous rescue dog with us. The staff were very friendly and accommodating on a Friday night. For us it was a great experience as we got to have a romantic meal and the food was delicious and also being able to bring our rescue to get him socialised with being out in public. See you again when we come back up north. A very memorable dining experience.

Excellent service. Superbly appointed family run hotel. Rooms comfortable - finished to a high standard. Proper breakfast with decent sausages and bacon! Had the best steak this year in the restaurant. Only minor negative is no carpark BUT plenty of spaces outside and if they’re full the sister hotel directly opposite has a large rear carpark. Book it - you won’t be disappointed Will definitely be back.

These guys could not have looked after us better. Very good breakfast and dinner, don't miss out on puddings (or starters); lovely beer on tap, good whisky, a terrace and a golden location. At the end of the night we tucked up as a large group in the Bothy for a nightcap. We were very happy here and would recommend.

Beverly M — Google review
Disappointing. Having been several times before, I am writing this in hopes that they can improve and get back to where they were last year when we had several great meals. Unfortunately, on this occasion, 2 of the 4 main meals had absolutely no texture. The sea bream with sauted chilli potatoes was drenched in a gloopy jar-like curry sauce plated in a bowl, meaning there was nowhere to move your food to eat it as everything was on top of itself. The chicken stuffed with haggis has similar problems. The bacon covering the chicken was fatty and floppy, and the haggis had a peanut butter claggyness to it. This was stacked upon the veggies with no spare room on the plate, meaning you had to eat top down. The cabbage with bacon was wet and again soft, with the only texture being a lumpy mash. The highlight of the dish was the carrot and tender stem broccoli, which was wonderful. For starters, we had some beef spring rolls, which were nice but came with a dark sauce which was overwhelmed with brown sugar. The fishcakes had quite a lot of potato in them, and unfortunately all of our starters had fingerprints and smears on the plates. Last year the bread and pesto was a highlight to start the meal but this time both seamed claggy. The menu hasnt changed since last year with only a few mains, which becomes very limited if you have any dietary requirements. The serving staff were friendly, and with more experience and confidence I hope mistakes become less frequent. I hope all this is just because of the wedding the waiting staff were chatting about, but if they could warn customers before they book, I think that would be beneficial. I hope we can come back and have the wonderful experience we have had before.

We visited today on our way through to Peebles and, honestly, had THE best staff interaction i have had in a long time. The lady who served me (im so sorry I didnt catch your name) was bright and smiley, and you said it was your first time putting a puppacino through the till. You made the visit memorable. The coffees were very good, and the slice of raspberry ripple cake that we had was lush. Also: the doggo says thank you for the puppacino.

I visited Eden Coffee House after hiking the Eildon hills and arrived just before 11:30am. I was pleased to find that they still offered breakfast options, including their recommended Scottish Breakfast. They also had vegetarian choices available. In addition to breakfast, they served scones, cakes, and other morning meals as well as main dishes later in the day. Alongside hot beverages, they offered a variety of cold drinks and a small selection of alcoholic beverages.
We called in for an impromptu wee brunch after seeing lots of great recommendations on the gluten free forums and my oh my we were not disappointed!!! First of all the Gluten free menu was SO BIG!! so much choice!! I ordered eggs Benedict on avocado toast, And it was unreal!!! So so so good the bread did not taste like the normal gf bread you get! I could eat it every day! My partner got the pancakes and the look stunning served with berries and maple syrup, I genuinely thought he was gunna lick the plate clean!!!! He said they were so moreish!! The staff were lovely, our waiter was called Paul I think, he was funny friendly and very attentive and informative, he had great knowledge of the menu items and was very helpful. Overall this wee place has exceeded expectations and we would happily go back any time

Eden was the first restaurant we tried during our week’s holiday in Melrose, and after trying a few other places, we ended up coming back here every day of our stay. The food was consistently delicious, the coffee was perfect every time, the service was outstanding, and the atmosphere bustling but calm. The Eden breakfast is very highly recommended - probably one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had, anywhere. So too are the cakes - simply delicious.

Went in for a light lunch after touring St Mary's Abby. This restaurant was recommended by the gift shop clerk. It is conveniently located beside the car park. We enjoyed the soup of the day - pepper lentil soup. The soup was served with two rolls and butter. Perfect! The soup was excellent as was the service, I apprecuate that we were not rushed through even though it was lunch time ane rather busy. Prices were also reasonable. I highly recommend Eden for lunch or just coffee and a pastry.

Consistently excellent. They know how to do the basics -like poach an egg beautifully always-but on top of that they do these creative, delicious dishes. I had feta, roasted red pepper, sweet potato, spinach and chorizo skillet topped with two hens eggs for brunch . Just wish they opened in the evenings too as the atmosphere always so welcoming and they are truly dog friendly .

My husband and I stopped in here for a quick quick bite to eat while on a tour. I wish we had more time to sit relax and enjoy because this place has a wonderful ambience and absolutely fantastic service. Of course the sandwiches were tasty as well. Thank you!

Was greeted passing by a guy telling us they do a "cracking breakfast" and should pop in and he wasn't wrong !!! The waiter (Paul) sat us to a lovely table outside and was very attentive. Full of laughs and banter, had me and my partner in stitches. Breakfast came very quickly, beautifully presented and tasted brilliant !!! Paul was fantastic and the chef Becca, who Paul said cooked our meal, dime a dozen !!! Will definitely be back !!!

Another great cafe, not overpriced despite the fact it's in a prime location. So good in fact, my 14 year old grandson asked to go back while we were holidaying nearby.

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. Not quite as popular as Melrose Abbey, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Abbotsford, the former home of renowned Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott, is a must-visit destination in the Scottish Borders. The 19th-century baronial mansion boasts turrets and a picturesque walled garden that exude fairytale charm. Inside, visitors can explore medieval halls and lavish libraries. The estate's grounds extend to the River Tweed, offering leisurely walks along its banks.
Absolutely wonderful visit here with my mom in May! The house was so fascinating and well kept and we really enjoyed the audio guide from Sir Walter Scott's perspective. The staff were all very friendly too. The gardens were stunning and we had a beautiful sunny day so it all looked like a fairytale castle. We were also lucky to be there on a day when they had an exhibit from the volunteers who observe the wildlife on the grounds and we got to see videos and specimens from a truly lovely lady who was so passionate- it was such a highlight!

This is a beautiful house of modest size set in a sublime aspect. It is best viewed after entering from the car park from the first floor balcony of the visitor centre. Happily you can also enjoy a pleasant meal while taking in the view. Taking the path down to the house you pass adjacent to the walled garden. First enter the chapel on the left hand side. A beautifully peaceful place to dwell. Then retrace your steps back outside and enter the house after passing through a stone archway. Friendly volunteers welcome you and offer an audio tour should you wish. Only the ground floor is open to visitors but there is a tremendous amount to take in including the interesting range of artifacts which Scott collected. Once finished in the house then the gardens, which are remarkable well maintained, are worth a gentle stroll. Whrn we visited it was a very hot day so we took advantage of sitting on one of the traditional deckchairs near visitor centre. There is a very reasonable parking charge of £2 per day (August 2025). This is a very worthwhile place to visit.

Lovely visit, guides in the house very welcoming and knowledgeable. Used the recorded information - there were 2 to choose from, one factual and one in the style of Walter Scott himself which I used, it was brilliant. Lovely walk by the river and back through the gardens. Staff in the visitor centre with very welcoming and keen to share where the dogs could go (everywhere except the house). Free entry with Historic Houses membership.

One of the highlights of our trip to Scotland! Abbotsford is so interesting! This home has history, literature, culture and most of all insights into a fascinating life. One of the two audio tours available uses actors and excerpts from Sir Walter Scott’s diary to tell his story. It is beautifully done. The gardens, restaurant and gift shop are also wonderful! Both my husband and I loved it!
Lauren S — Google review
We visited late to September 2025 to this particular heritage site and found it fascinating. Not only were we enchanted with the interior of the house but also the the gardens and of course the history. Well recommended and we found it easy to park. A++

Bought an unlimited ticket to experience the whole of Abbotsford as had never visited before & neither had mother in law who's lived in the Borders for over 80yrs! We ranged in ages from teens to 80+ & we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The house tour was very interesting & well thought out with 'Sir Walter' taking us round his home. The gardens were lovely & there was plenty of seating dotted around if you got a little weary. The cafe was good accommodating various dietary requirements. There was also a 'snack' area out to the front of the main building with picnic benches. Us younger ones visited Witch's Corner & enjoyed the quiz collecting the trophy bookmarks afterwards! All staff, from the knowledgeable & passionate volunteers to the workers in the main building & cafe were friendly & polite. The facilities were nice & clean too. Plenty of on site parking available at a reasonable price. Would quite happily return & highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.
Paula — Google review
Walter Scott passed away more than two centuries ago, yet this house still breathes as a living home rather than a mere museum. All the attributes of a museum are present, and still the spirit of Scott’s character and his extraordinary genius lingers in every room. The estate is delightful in every way – from the gardens to the hunting trophies and firearms, and, of course, the warmth of the staff.

Really nice gardens to wander in or even sit on a nice sunny day. Can be a wee bit busy though. Admission is free but you can put a donation in the box

A very pretty house and garden, worth visiting if you are in Melrose but fairly small so not necessarily worth a special visit. The house can be rented from the National Trust for Scotland so it could be a nice getaway place for a group. The greenhouse is adorable and really well maintained.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful takeaway experience, look no further than Seasons. This charming restaurant caught my eye while driving by, and I couldn't resist checking it out. Opting for their At Home menu during our local stay proved to be a fantastic decision! The ordering process was seamless, with helpful staff providing guidance on pick-up times to accommodate traffic. The food arrived in convenient oven-ready containers complete with cooking instructions.
A lovely quiet restaurant with amazing food and service. We ate the smoked salmon starter (which was quite simply the best I have ever eaten); this was followed by the lamb, and beef wellington - both of which were incredibly tasty. We had sides of green beans and cauliflower cheese and soda bread. All in all a super deliciously good place to eat.

Excellent seasonal fare from lovely proprietors. Unfussy local whole foods made even better by a skilled chef. The in-house smoked salmon was the best I’ve ever had. Service was impeccable but relaxed. A very memorable experience in the borderlands!

I apologize for my English. My review will be divided into +/- The cuisine is just incredible. We tried steak, fish and chicken. Serving, taste, on top, thank you. What I didn't like was where we sat, we sat between the refrigerators and the shelves of the store. We wanted to sit with people in a large hall. This diminished our impressions a bit. I didn't understand the cheese plate, I expected Scottish cheeses, but there were parmesan and brie on the plate, I didn't know they were made in Scotland. I was expecting local cheeses. Dessert: we tried panacotta, unfortunately, neither the consistency nor the taste was impressive. The service was very polite and pleasant. Thanks

The Hoebridge was a fantastic dinner. The food was inventive and clearly picked with care. Beautiful and intimate setting with a flair of Nordic decor. The staff were lovely, conversational and care free. Well worth the trip from Edinburgh to spent a lovely evening with loved ones.

Incredible meal at The Hoebridge. The food was impeccable — everything was cooked to perfection and well presented. The cocktails were excellent, However, the food really stood out. The service was excellent too — friendly, attentive and made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. Excellent meal last night in this lovely restaurant. We were on holiday, visiting area and cannot fault the food, all 3 courses were delicious pate & I had scallops followed by chicken stuffed with haggis & my husband had lamb chops (cooked perfectly) and deserts did not disappoint either. Wine was lovely as was the beer and very reasonably priced too. Service was good but not many people in so lacked a bit atmosphere. Surprising for a Friday night, as quality of meal was fantastic!!

Had a brilliant meal in here tonight. Pear and Goats Cheese Salad to start, followed by Lamb Casserole for my main and then Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. The food was lovely and the staff members customer service was absolutely spot on. Very friendly and very quick to take orders, clear tables and make sure you have an enjoyable meal. Thanks ☺️

Food very nice, decent price and service was excellent. Restaurant seems busy during the morning but not so later on which is a shame as the food is very good. There were 4 of us and we each had a different main. We all agreed that the food was fab. (Fish and Chips, Sea Bream, Chicken w Haggis, Lamb stew). Will certainly return when in Melrose.

It's like walking into a restaurant and then feeling like you've imposed on an acquaintance's home kitchen. I smiled at a man eating by himself and received an empty stare back, only to realize later that it was the owner. And the servers were... his partner and teenage kid? As they say down to their own dinner at a nearby table after serving us our plates. Nothing wrong with that in a small town, but the male owners grumpiness is inhospitable. Crap commercial beers on tap. Zero craft beer; even tho Tempest, the big local craft brewery, is a 10min walk away. It would be a 2 except for the decent portions of protein (fish, chicken). The veggies of cauliflower, carrots and broccoli look exactly like the prewashed bags I get myself at Lidl. (At least they are serving some real veggies). Sorry for your stresses, but as Yoda said, Do or do not, there is no (half) try.

The Kings Arms Hotel, a charming 300-year-old establishment, offers cozy rooms and a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast and dine at the on-site restaurant and bar. Located in the market town of Castle Douglas, it serves as an ideal base for exploring Dumfries & Galloway.
The Kings Arms staff is warm, welcoming and accommodating. They are very friendly and worked really hard to make our stay comfortable. The extended hours for the included breakfast were well appreciated. Although the rooms are small, the place was built in 1793, they are clean, tidy and comfortable. The Sherry was a nice surprise. )

Nice hotel.. Great location, staff all very helpful and friendly.. food was nice if a bit greasy... Did not like the room we were given at all.. no 2 it was outside past the beer gardens.. no outlook like being in a builders yard... and to be honest not very clean... the grouting and sealant in the shower is thick with black mould... horrible. The mattresses are filthy with stains of bodily fluids and no mattress protectors... this was very disappointing

Had a lovely lunch there. Nice lounge area where there were quite a few folks having food. Staff were really good and helped accomodate our (biggish) dog. Food was good, I had the GF fish and chips my partner had the fish pie. Both were well cooked and decent portions.

Very nice pub with rooms and friendly staff! Rooms of a good quality. However, as it’s an old building the walls are very thin and not well sound insulated, especially between rooms 3 and 4. I was unfortunately slept very poorly due to a loud conversation in the adjacent room that continued until 2:30am. There was also a significant wait to get seated for breakfast as no one was present in the breakfast room for over 20 minutes. I ended up leaving my room key on the desk as there was also no one there to properly check out with - overall i would say this hotel is good value for the price of a room But would recommend requesting NOT to be booked in rooms 3 or 4 until sound proofing improvements are made

Lovely pub in the heart of Melrose. Lauren and the team make us feel so welcomed every time we visit. Steak Club is our particular favourite...such good value...why wouldn't you? We'll be back for New Year. Many thanks.
Richard S — Google review
I would have given 5 stars for service if it had been up to the standard of our first night (Friday) when only 2 people were serving the restaurant. Sadly 4 people weren't able to keep up the standard on a Saturday night with a rather quiet night but I think there were a number of brand new staff on and most pulled together, we still enjoyed the experience. The food was great, not a huge choice but there are plenty of places to eat in Melrose if you can't find anything suitable on the menu. I originally felt that the price was a bit high but considering we had breakfast for two people for two nights included I've reconsidered and I think we got excellent value. The food on offer was considerably better than your average pub grub. Parking in Melrose is not great but there is a pay n display car park within a couple mins walk. The staff were all lovely, great breakfast! I definitely recommend the full Scottish! Melrose is a delightful place and so pretty, lack of general parking aside, I'd definitely stay here again and I highly recommend visiting Melrose!

Expensive relative to other local hotels but the only one available. The rooms, once we found them, were clean and comfy. The stair carpet was well-used and marked. There is no elevator. The linen bags were waiting for collection. Breakfast was not included, but the restaurant looked well-used. Staff were helpful but multi-tasking.

Purchased a wine of a particular vintage online, as this shop seemed to be the only place that had it. Found on delivery the year was incorrect. We were told that the photo hadn’t been updated on the site (although the description clearly stated the year….). We were told on the initial call “sometimes it happens” and were not offered a refund or exchange. On a second call a refund was agreed, albeit, reluctantly. We were made to feel that we were the inconvenience despite this vendors poor advertising. Make sure you call to confirm particular orders or you might be disappointed as we were.

Lovely experience here - great selection of wines and whisky (and more), knowledgeable and friendly staff - tasted a couple of belters too. Also a lovely spot for a drink on the square
Owen O — Google review
This may function well as a wine bar - but in our experience, not as a cafe. We ended up here for a late lunch after a long walk - other options were full. The staff took a long time to take the order and then to process the order. After waiting about 20 min, we were told that there were no rolls, so the bacon roll order had to be changed. My order of goats cheese sandwich was possibly the poorest sandwich I have had for a long time, and the accompanying leaves were wilted and inedible. The staff appeared to be uninterested in operating the venue as a cafe. Maybe just a uniquely bad experience - but there must be better options in Melrose.
Elaine — Google review
We called in twice on consecutive days sitting outside on a warm sunny day and indoors on a cool breezy day. Sitting inside was indeed a cold, draughty experience because of the necessity of providing plenty of air for Covid-19 prevention. But the coffee, scones and tray bakes were all lovely. Friendly staff and an amazing and extensive selection of wines, whiskies and other spirits make this a must visit location. Dogs are welcomed indoors.

I visit this recently refurbished cafe weekly. It’s clean and fresh with pristine crockery and cutlery (I’m fussy about that). I have tea which is very good and a generous sized teapot. I can’t comment on the coffee but my friend if she has one is happy with her cappuccino. When we have a cake or scone it’s always very nice. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The proprietor in the wine/whisky area always has a chat as we leave. I noticed a couple of recent poor reviews and have to say I’m very surprised since that is completely the opposite to my experience. Although local I have no connection to the proprietor or staff.
Anne D — Google review
The sign at the door instructs you to wear a mask upon entering this establishment, which you should anyway and I did. Unfortunately once inside the proprietor was not wearing a mask and proceeded to cough without putting his hand to his mouth. He followed this up by blowing his nose! I sharply retreated never to set foot in this place again. Hypocrite, amongst other names, spring to mind.

This charming store offers an eclectic mix of unique gifts suitable for all ages, alongside an impressive array of jewelry and homewares. Beautiful stock and fab service, I have recently ordered a few things from the website due to lock down, they were always posted out quickly and looked exactly how they did on the website, I was also in the shop a few times before Christmas pre lock down, again the shop & stock was lovely, and service was very welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend.

Bakery
I visited Alexander Dalgetty & Sons bakery for a roll and coffee, but I ended up getting much more than that due to the enticing smell and appealing appearance of their food. The lady behind the counter kindly informed me about the prices as she served me, and she was incredibly helpful throughout my visit. I was impressed by the service, the quality of the food, and the inviting atmosphere of this charming store in a picturesque town.
Lovely bakery with a great selection of food and local produce. Grand pies. Definitely worth a visit.

I ordered a cake for my birthday and I asked for a square purple cake with flowers all round and they gave me a blue cake with about seven flowers and the wrong design overall I really hated it and don't reccomed. Their service was good and I liked the atmosphere except next time I would like them to do their job properly

We stopped here to buy food for the first day o our walk along St Cuthbert's Way. We bought 2 bridies and a pack of Melrose biscuits - sensational! If we had thought the cakes would have survived our yomp, we would have bought those, too!

What a gem of a bakery, goods tasted as good as they looked and fantastic value during this time.

Rude staff sadly! Lovely bakery, delicious pastries and cakes. Shame the staff, in particular a lady named Carol (her badge says Manager!) is so rude. Every time I’ve visited she is rude and dismissive, I thought initially she was maybe just having a bad day, but it’s now happened on multiple occasions. Today I simply asked if it was possible to have my pastry warmed, I was met with an eye roll and huff and told “well you have to tell me” ……I thought I was when I said “could I get that warmed please?” What a shame, as it makes an otherwise lovely bakery feel very unwelcoming indeed.

I went in for a roll and coffee. I ended up with alot more (my own choice) due to the smell and aesthetics if the food. I only had a note on me and the lady was so kind to tell me the amount as I went along. Nothing was trouble. She was awesome. Going there every morning from now on. Thank you.

Nestled near Melrose Abbey, Priorwood Garden National Trust for Scotland is a charming hidden gem. A doorway leads to a pathway flanked by an old house covered in vines and foliage, opening into a vibrant garden with benches for relaxation. The garden is known for cultivating plants specifically for dried flower arrangements and features a shop selling dried flowers. Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, it boasts an apple orchard preserving historic varieties and Scotland's only dried flower garden.
We stumbled upon this garden by accident and couldn’t have been happier. It’s very small but well maintained and you can see the melrose abbey from the garden. We loved it and plan to spend more time here during spring and summer.

A lovely wee garden in the middle of Melrose. Plenty of plants to see as well as a variety of apple trees . Plants can be purchased via a honesty box as is the entry to the gardens. Public toilets are available next door. A pay and display cark park is across the road. No cafe on site but plenty of choices nearby . We got fed in The Ship Inn.

Colourful, attractive, small walled garden. Worth a visit. Free bit open to donations.
Photos R — Google review
Not really worth visiting. Few flowers. Lots of ancient apple trees, which is good. So many varieties are lost. I search in vain for a Beauty of Bath. In the spring the apple blossom may make visiting worthwhile and there may even be some flowers to see. There were some lovely dahlias. The only things worth the time spent, in October when we went, are the sculpture of doves and an artistic creation...what it's technical term is I don't know.. of birds. And the chance to buy some apples at an honesty box near the entrance.
Duncan P — Google review
This garden can not be missed! When I visited, the Apple trees were flush with beautiful fruits. There were splendid dahlias rich with many colors.

The gardens are very close to Melrose Abbey. It is good to note that it is dog friendly obviously with a lead. We enjoyed a good wander also visited the orchard with a good supply of apples in various stages of ripeness. It really is a quiet, peaceful place and you can enjoy a seat and just listen or watch.

Apples for Jam is a charming cafe and gallery with two branches in Melrose and Earlston. The original location features colorful artworks on the walls, offering a fun menu of savory bites, pastries, and cakes from indie suppliers like Katy Cloud Bakery and Naked Sourdough. The cafe serves delicious fillings in Bross bagels, such as salt beef sourced from a local butcher, along with freshly baked pastries made by the local restaurant Seasons.
A homely spot i would recommend everyone to eat at. This cafe has particularly nice interior decorations. Staff were friendly. This place felt like it was family run which is always nice and comforting. Food tasted great. Many innovative food combinations on the menu which makes me want to go back again! My food never arrived so it's hard to rate, although my child felt sorry for me being hungry and ignored by the three staff members so gave me some of hers and that tasted great. Surely if you serve food to 2 of 3 people at a table you would wonder about the third? Staff were surprised when it was pointed out when given the bill and offered to put it in a bag. Not a pleasant lunch experience.

At Simply Delicious, a charming gem in Melrose, visitors are greeted with warmth and an array of delightful treats. This quaint shop is renowned for its exceptional ice cream, drawing in crowds whenever the sun shines. With flavors like apple crumble that tantalize the taste buds, it’s a must-visit for dessert lovers. Beyond ice cream, Simply Delicious offers a selection of sweet Scottish delights including tablet and millionaire's shortbread.
The ice cream shop offers a divine experience with a wide range of traditional and contemporary flavors to choose from. The spotless and bright ambiance complements the varied selection of sweet treats that cater to both children and adults. The friendly staff adds to the overall pleasant atmosphere, and the prices are reasonable, making it a great place to indulge in delicious ice cream.

Delicious ice cream in a range of flavours. Very creamy, I had highland toffee it was so smooth. Nice range of handmade chocolates too. Bought some as a gift for Mother’s Day.
Julie H — Google review
Simply Delicious : After a long hike on the Eildon Hills, we stopped at Simply Delicious hoping for a sweet treat, but the experience was very disappointing. The customer service was poor from the start. I was served a one-scoop ice cream in a broken cone, and as soon as I sat outside, the scoop fell to the ground. The owner saw this happen but didn’t offer any replacement or goodwill gesture. I decided to buy another scoop so I wouldn’t miss out while my family and friends enjoyed theirs, but I was surprised and upset when I noticed something else: the same ice cream I paid for was being served to another family in scoops nearly five times larger than mine. This left me feeling insulted, especially as my family is mixed-race and our friends are Asian — the clear difference in treatment felt biased and unfair. Instead of a welcoming atmosphere, the whole experience left us feeling uncomfortable and undervalued. To be honest, their ice cream has never been particularly good, and the only reason we went was because our friends chose it. Sadly, this visit confirmed that Simply Delicious is not a place we’d return to or recommend.

Fantastic little shop just up the road from the Melrose bus station. They have the best ice-cream in town with other goodies from tablet to millionaire's shortbread and an assortment of boiled sweets and fancy confectionery. You can sit-in at the window, or if it's a nice day, sit outside with a great view of the Abbey. On colder days you might fancy a coffee or a hot chocolate. There is one step leading into the shop and it is too small to accommodate most wheelchairs or pushchairs. The staff are wonderful and so friendly, they may be able to take wheelchair users orders and pass them out, but you would definitely need to check with them first. Parking is always a bit difficult in Melrose as it's a very popular and busy place, but it's definitely worth the effort for the twelve different flavours from original to pistachio! Weekends and holidays are exceptionally busy times, especially in the warmer weather. Sometimes there is a line out the door! I highly recommend the Highland Toffee (and the hot chocolate). Enjoy!

Wonderful little find on our pit stop. We stopped in Melrose to have a look around as we’ve never been in this area before. We came across the ice cream sign and as the weather was beautiful we decided to stop. The ice cream is amazing! Beautiful and creamy, plenty of flavours to choose from, I struggled to choose. The homemade tablet looked lovely too.

The George & Abottsford Hotel, a former coaching inn, offers uncomplicated accommodations with a restaurant and a courtyard garden. Guests are invited to relish a delightful lunch or dinner by utilizing the convenient "Reserve Now" feature. This establishment served as the venue for a wedding attended by multiple family members who found it to be splendid. Although some rooms could benefit from updates, they were functional and maintained cleanliness. The staff exhibited remarkable kindness and helpfulness while maintaining an enjoyable atmosphere.
Guest service was excellent! Check in was quick and easy even with my US debit payment card having issues going through. The clerk was super friendly, patient, and helpful. The location is awesome! Property is older and just beautiful. My room is nice size. Twin bed very soft and comfy and extra seating chair. Beautiful window that opens overlooking courtyard. There's a bar and restaurant with beautiful seating inside and outside all around on the GROUND floor. Great Wi-Fi!!! Works wonderfully all over hotel, too! Nice TV and cable viewing options. Bathroom shower on the smallish side and I'm on the largish side plus mobility issues. A little bit challenging there, but the handheld shower head makes up for issues. All-in-all, nice, clean, and fresh room and hotel! No fridge or microwave in my room, but it does have a heating kettle for making instant coffee or tea. Just a few other unexpected challenges: I wasn't expecting first floor to mean I had to go up any stairs. They informed me here in Scotland first floor is not meant same as in the US. Ground floor is what they would say. First floor is up a level. I have some mobility issues, but they helped with my luggage so that was super nice!

We stayed at this hotel for one night (thankfully) as we toured Edinburgh. When I write reviews, I try to find some sort of redeeming qualities. I do not have much that I can include for this hotel unfortunately. This hotel is a kin to a dilapidated and unkempt building. Upon entry, the decor could appear charming and nostalgic but instead it was drab and depressing. It slightly reminded me of a funeral home. There is no elevator so you must walk up to your room which is not a problem however it seemed as if all of the rooms were located down corridors that made you feel as if you were in a haunted house or scary movie. All of the rooms are accessible via an actual key not a key card. The door knobs to get into the rooms gave me some concern as they seemed very old and as if they may fall off and I would be trapped at any moment. As I was traveling with a group, I had the opportunity to see a variety of rooms within this hotel. The only two rooms that remotely looked habitable or what must’ve been a suite that had a bay window. That room was spacious and decently decorated with a lovely view of the street below. Another room that I visited had a floor that sloped significantly to where your feet would be higher than your head as you lay in the bed. In that same room there was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. Another room was so small that you truly could not fit two people with their luggage. That party had to be moved to another room. Another room was very small but for one person with a single bed. Of all of the rooms that was likely the coziest. The room in which I stayed in was relatively small with two small twin beds that were comfortable. The bathroom was of the size of a cruise ship bathroom including the size of the shower. There were not many outlets so we had to be creative. They did leave us cookies so that is redeeming to an extent. If you are looking for amenities, this hotel is not it. There is no vending machine available so if you decide you want a midnight snack forget about it. There’s also not an ice machine however the staff did give me two glasses full of ice. There was a breakfast available that was mediocre at best. The only redeeming quality of the breakfast was the fruit bread that we were offered. Also the staff was incredibly polite and kind during breakfast. Before we stayed at this hotel I did read previous reviews I did not expect it to be this bad. There is certainly some charm when it comes to an older building however a little care and TLC will go a very long way. This hotel is stuck in time though I’m not sure what time. I do believe that if the owners put a little extra money into refining things it could be better but I would not want to stay at this hotel again.

I stayed at the George and Abottsford Hotel for 2 nights at the end of September. The location of the hotel (in the centre of Melrose) was perfect for me. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. I really enjoyed the breakfasts served.

Possibly the worst Room I have stayed in during my 20 Years travelling around the Country. I didn't even stay the whole night, as soon as I felt refreshed enough I checked out. Didn't use the Shower/Bath as it was a disgrace. Wooden Window didn't close properly leaving a Gap for the wind to Howl Through. Massive gap at the base of the Door. Paper peeling off. How on Earth they can charge £100 plus for a Room in that State is Criminal. I took Photos and Pisted them on Trip Advisor for People to see.

We stayed for 2 nights at the G&A. Looking at previous comments, I wasn't sure what to expect. But bearing in mind that this is a 2 star hotel and obviously not the Ritz, we had a wonderful time. Rooms were perfectly clean, bedding was comfortable, staff was incredibly nice and helpful. Bathroom was fonctionnal, well heated and water was well pressured. Sure, the hotel wasn't Ikea-furnished or Instagram-friendly, but it is also full of old maps and drawings of Scotland's wildlife. Restaurant offered decent value for money and offered Live music, which was lovely. And the maze-like structure of the hotel was rather amusing. Overall, being into old charm, we absolutely loved it.

The Rhymers Stone, located near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, is a captivating historical landmark. This stone marks the spot where the old Eildon Tree once stood and pays tribute to Thomas the Rhymer, a legendary figure from this region. While it may appear to be just a headstone, delving into its fascinating backstory is highly recommended. Adjacent parking makes it convenient for those interested in hiking the picturesque Eildon hills.
You could say that it is just a headstone but the story behind it is a fascinating one and worth researching. Nice nearby spot for parking for those wishing to hike the Eildon hills. Lots of conservation work going on so please be respectful to this. Views from the top are amazing on a clear day, well worth a visit.

Nice place to stop & take in the views as we did after coming down from the Eildon hills. There are a couple of seats over the wall from the actual stone which is unremarkable. but a nice bit of fantasy with the legend.

A cute diversion from the main road. The stone itself is not really worth the trip and the myth may also only appeal to a few, but the history of the man concerned is interesting

Nestled in the charming town of Melrose, the Borders Book Festival is a highlight of the annual calendar, taking place every June in the stunning Georgian Harmony Garden. This vibrant event draws an impressive lineup of literary icons, sports personalities, and comedians who engage audiences through talks and discussions. The festival offers four delightful days filled with not just literature but also food, drinks, live music, and comedy—making it a fantastic experience for families.
This is my second year at the Festival. Very well organised and the number of authors to choose from is amazing... the only difficulty is who to choose. The interviewers were also excellent. One of the slight issues is the parking (we come from Aberdeen) and walking is difficult for my mum but she cannot get disabled parking ... parking can be a chore. Love Melrose and love the Festival though so worth the effort.

Bar
Marmions @ the wynd is a Scottish restaurant known for its warm and welcoming staff. The food buffet, while lovely, could use a bit more variety. The private function room has a fabulous layout and the staff remains friendly and efficient even during busy times. Visitors highly recommend this place for its wonderful food, staff, and atmosphere. It's described as a cool and fantastic spot with a retro vibe that shouldn't be missed.
Private function room was great, fab layout. staff were warm & welcoming food buffet could have done with slightly more selection but everything that was served was lovely!

Can get very busy quickly (December) but staff cope very well and remain friendly and efficient. Live band is a great touch. Can get boisterous but harmless.

Pub
The Ship Inn, situated in the Marygate area of Holy Island, offers guest accommodation, homemade meals, and a range of beverages including craft beers. With its warm and inviting atmosphere, this historic pub has been serving customers for centuries. Located at the top of High Street in Melrose, in the heart of the Scottish Borders and near Melrose Abbey, The Ship Inn is a hidden gem that some visitors want to keep secret.
Lovely pub and friendly staff, coming from Edinburgh I have to say I love the prices for the beer as well. Lovely pint of real ale with the price beginning with a 4, long time since the price of a pint in Edinburgh began with a 4. Unfortunately those of us who stay there are subject to the tourist rip off prices

Great friendly service, excellent food and drinks, lost at pool (again) 😆 Great outdoor space. Busy pub, and on a Monday too! Would recommend.
Chilli V — Google review
My partner and I were visiting Scotland. We were staying at The Waverley Castle Hotel so we decided to take a walk to Melrose and we came across The Ship Inn and we had lunch which was a ham & cheese and they toasted it and a pot of tea which was lovely. I have attached a photo of my lunch. The staff were very friendly. The local people were friendly too.
Rebecca M — Google review
I searched for dog friendly pubs in Melrose, and the Ship Inn came out on top. It's more dog tolerant than dog friendly, they welcome our four-legged friends but don't lay out the red carpet. The service was quick and courteous, and the food was great British pub grub. My wife said her haddock and chips were fantastic. She only had a medium portion but it was massive. And the Dirty Dog with crispy onions was really good too. Great value for money, and you know exactly what you're getting.

What a find this place is! We headed into Melrose and this establishment is right in the centre of the town. We walked in and it was busy. They said they had no tables inside but did have covered tables at the rear outside. As we started to head over there the manager said he would have a table for us inside in a few minutes if we wanted to wait at the bar which we did. Ordered some soft drinks and two minutes later we were shown to a great table for the two of us and our dog. We ordered starters and mains but when the starters arrived we realised we'd ordered too much. The portions were huge. My wife had nachos and I had the soup of the day which was awesome. My wife had maccaroni cheese and I had a chicken cesar salad along with a portion of cheesy chips. The salad was magnificent filled with chicken and the portions of cheesy chips was ridiculous but the dog was quite happy as most were going his way. Overall it was just over £40 for drinks and food which you really cannot complain about sit was spot on. The atmosphere inside was also really good and despite being busy, we didn't have to wait long. So many people were being turned away though so may be worth booking if you are looking to drop in. Can't rate the place highly enough and will certainly be back soon. Thanks

Lovely pub. Had Sunday lunch just yesterday. Really nice. Had our 2 dogs with us and they were given water immediately. I had half roast chicken my husband beef. You could still have other things off the menu. The roast potatoes were huge! Really nice dinner then had a sweet each. I had a salted caramel Sundae and husband Sticky Toffee pudding. It wasn't cheap but very nice. Drinks were more than we normally pay. Inside pub was lovely and staff really good and attentive. We had pre booked our table. Well worth the extra spend.

Friendly, fun & really enjoyable. Greeted with a smile & welcome from the bar man. Food was lovely, haggis bites & dirty dog, amazing !! A very large sausage!! Excellent service. Really good vibe at this pub. Would definitely recommend for all ages. Thank you, our last holiday meal before traveling home .

Absolutely in love with this place!!!!!!!! I'm in Melrose for business, and I came here after a long day to have some quick food! Could not believe how great this place is, the food's amazing, the staff is on another level and so is the atmosphere! You guys have no idea how much it means to go the extra effort and allow us smokers (yes - there's still a few of us out there!) a place like your "outside" bit ! Flatscreen TVs, heating, MUSIC! I'm from Southampton, England and this place alone has made me start thinking hard about relocating (not to say that the rest of Scotland hasn't weighed for those thoughts to start too!) Recommend! Recommend! Recommend! 100%!

Rak Thai

Takeout Restaurant
Rak Thai in Melrose, Scotland is a hidden gem known for its authentic and delicious Thai food. The takeaway is popular, so it's recommended to order a few hours in advance, especially on weekends. Customers rave about the crispy chicken spring rolls with sour plum dip and the chicken satay as starters, while the Massaman beef and spicy Pad Grarpao prawn are highly recommended as main dishes. The restaurant also stands out for using biodegradable and compostable packaging.
Read the reviews and had to try this takeaway. 2 starters, 1 soup, 1 stir fry, 1 rice - £36 which we thought was good value. The flavours in all dishes were outstanding - every review was true, the best Thai meal ever. Portions not huge but they don't need to be. Normally when you get veg in a dish it is just to fill the dish out - the range of veg in the stir fry was lovely and tasted amazing, definitely not just a filler! Would highly recommend - book early though.

We had a delicious Thai dinner for three yesterday. Best I’ve tasted outside Thailand. Also very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended, but be aware that it’s not really a restaurant though they have tables and high stools to sit at.

Went to Rak Thai in Melrose tonight. My wife and I had a sit in meal. Restaurant is small, food was fantastic, service good and amazing value. My wife is Thai and we have tried many Thai restaurants, Rak Thai is up with the best. Wish it was closer to my home. I had prawn gaeng daeng, my wife had haw mok, both with steamed rice and a somtam to share.

The best Thai food in the Scottish Borders. Great choices, excellently cooked. Always feels healthy and portion sizes are just right. The delivery service is good as well. The banana fritters are amazing.

Had an excellent meal here. It is a takeaway with a few tables rather than a restaurant but the standard of flavours and good quality was awesome. The owner was happy for us to bring our own wine and eat in. Would recommend. Thanks for a lovely meal 🍛😋👍🙏

Authentic, flavoursome Thai food on my doorstep! Hidden gem just off Market Square in Melrose. Always tasty. Great variety. Generous portions. Warm welcome every time. Rak Thai has turned into an almost weekly treat.
Giles E — Google review
Although I know the Thai owner/chef from her other food outlet, this was our first takeaway from the Rak Thai in Melrose, and it did not disappoint. We ordered the 'Banquet for two' and it was, without question, the best takeaway Thai food we have eaten since leaving Thailand almost 3 years ago. For starters, we ordered both the crispy chicken spring rolls with sour plum dip and the chicken satay. For mains, we had a deliciously creamy Massaman (beef) and the spicy Pad Grarpao (prawn). It all came with a generous portion of egg fried rice. There were generous portions of everything, and there was plenty of leftover mains for us to warm up for lunch next day. An added bonus (and an important consideration for me) is that the food came packaged in biodegradable containers and was ready for collection in a paper carrier bag. Definitely FIVE STARS from us!
James — Google review
This is the 4th time getting food from here, as usual it tasted amazing, only problem was it was quite lacking in actual food, usually dish has onion and peanuts in, to which there were none, also very little actual chicken and potato, which was disappointing, but the coconut rice was brilliant.

Day 5

Bridge
Just a short walk from Melrose Abbey, the Gattonside Suspension Bridge is a hidden gem that often goes unnoticed by visitors. This historic bridge, constructed in 1826, connects the town to the nearby village of Gattonside. The area offers picturesque riverside walks and stunning views of the surrounding scenery. It's particularly enchanting during sunrise and sunset. The bridge provides an ideal vantage point to admire the fast-flowing river below and the breathtaking hills in the distance.

Beautiful walks along the river side, the suspension bridge is perfectly located and you can easily spend an hour just standing on it, looking at the surrounding scenery. Especially good to visit at sunrise and sunset.

I love coming to this part of the river in Melrose, really worth the walk (it's not far from the town centre) to listen to the river run by and take a walk into Gattonside.

Melrose Golf Club

Golf club
Nestled at the base of the Eildon Hills, Melrose Golf Club is a charming 9-hole course that has been a part of the Scottish golf scene since 1880. The par-70 course spans 5,545 yards and offers a challenge for all skill levels with its tree-lined fairways. It has received praise as one of Scotland's hidden gems by the Stephen Gallacher Foundation. The well-maintained fairways and strategically placed hazards make for an enjoyable round.
I'm a member here, but it's a great place for a reasonably priced game for visitors. Beautiful scenery .. don't forget to turn around as you get higher up the course. The views are great.
Margaret H — Google review
Enjoyable round with my grandson. A mature course with most holes tree lined. The start is challenging as it's mostly uphill for the first 4 holes, but when you reach the 5th tee the views are fab. I suppose due to the inclement weather, the fairways in places were a wee bit soggy. Preferred lies were in use. The greens had a bit of moss, but were ok to putt on, but with the weather a real challenge for the green keeping staff. I would play again if in the area.
Grand T — Google review
A very quirky course but very well maintained and with cracking views from most holes thoroughly enjoyed our round here.
David S — Google review
This is a great 9 hole course I loved it! There are separate tee boxes for a back 9 but we didn't have time for 18 but I will go back. The greens had just been tyned and sanded so it wasn't the best time to play but the fairways were well kept and although a short course there were enough hazards at strategic positions to make it more difficult, including greens surrounded by ditches and streams (burns) the 5th and 9th are drivable par 4's if you're straight! The green keeper/manager? was very helpful and made us feel very welcome there are no buggies here but the club provides pull trollies if required. Great views from many holes, we spent an enjoyable morning there. Thanks
Laurie K — Google review
Great wee 9 holer, I have enjoyed a couple of rounds here. A good way to enjoy an hour and a half to two hours to keep you ticking over between your next round of 18 holes. 👍👍
Bob C — Google review
Nice little course , can play 9 holes round this or if you forget your clubs no problems, they can lend you some that have been donated, small club house to sit and relax in after, or just to grab a view
Eddie — Google review
Well maintained and challenging course. Mostly wide and forgiving fairways. Beautiful views!

Very neat and tidy with very picturesque holes. Good sized car park and part time clubhouse. Oh, and DOGS ALLOWED ON THE COURSE!!! 😊😊😊

Gattonside

Gattonside is a charming village nestled in the Scottish Borders, just 1 kilometre north of Melrose and situated on the picturesque north side of the River Tweed. For nature enthusiasts, a delightful walking route begins by turning left and following a road for approximately 100 yards until reaching the Southern Upland Way marked by a wooden signpost. Following this path uphill for nearly 1.

Italian restaurant
Monte Cassino Melrose Restaurant is a hidden gem that truly shines once you step inside. While the exterior may not catch your eye on a dark evening, the interior welcomes you with warmth and charm. The talented chef Antonio Caterino and his team serve up an impressive traditional Italian menu, featuring popular pizzas and exquisite seafood dishes. Diners can enjoy a variety of options, including delightful pasta specials like mushroom risotto and spinach ravioli.
The food was really nice and the staff were lovely but they needed to be slightly more attentive. The atmosphere was relaxing and it was very authentically Italian. Overall it was a nice evening out maybe a little pricey for what you get though, but would still highly recommend it.

Amazing seafood specials, fresh langoustines, scallops, clams, proper Italian food like you used to get. Great service delicious wines and excellent value for money for the quality of the food. Just fantastic! 🥰

OMG. Best Italian restaurant outside of Italy. Food is amazing and service was perfect. Started with scallops, delicious. Mixed seafood with bread, plentiful and soo tasty. Ravioli porcine, so tasty and fresh. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Should be 5 star without a doubt. Will be back ASAP.

Fabulous meal and very helpful and lovely staff!
Graham F — Google review
We booked last minute for a party of 12-14 after a family funeral and a total of 24 showed up. The staff were absolutely wonderful in coping with the extras, organising extra tables and increasing the size of the main one. The service and food were second to none and whole event was spectaculary impressive. This was only the second time in two years we had eaten there and the staff remembered us. I would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful restaurant and staff.
HellsBellRinger M — Google review
Tasteless food, the high score must be fake. Ingredients were of poor quality and the meal was over priced. One of the dishes arrived cold. The restaurant is nice and the service is decent but doesn’t compensate in any way for the quality of the food.
George D — Google review
Visited this restaurant with some work colleagues for a evening meal. Everything about this place was amazing the food was outstanding and the service was top notch. All the staff were super friendly and very welcoming. Definitely worth visiting this little gem if your around the area. Also there is plenty of parking at the restaurant too. We plan to visit again next time we are working near 100%
