Burg Satzvey is a 14th-century castle owned by the Beissel von Gymnich family, offering tours and themed events. This well-preserved gem boasts moats, turrets, and a beautiful facade perfect for capturing stunning pictures. It's worth checking for activities in advance to plan your visit accordingly. The surrounding lake is home to an adorable otter family that can be observed swimming or lounging around.
Super cute small castle 45 minutes drive out from Bonn or Cologne. I went there during the Christmas Season, when they host a market. The atmosphere was super nice, with many small tents and vendors offering food, drinks and souvenirs. The castle has a main court and a backyard field, with different stalls and cabins. I think they have also accomodation where you can spend the night. From a flyer i catch on the way, i could read they have many different events along the year, with chavalry tournaments, and middle age markets, that are perfectly staged on the venue. They recreate an authentic atmosphere, and there is also a perdoemative factor that makes the experince enjoyable, with theatre plays and encatings.

Seems like a great place for if there are events going on. We went on a non event day, and there were just a few open shops. Tours of the castle are only in German, with a rough translation page available in English. It was a beautiful castle on the outside but we only got to see a few rooms inside, and as it is still lived in by the family a fair amount of discussion was about the family.

Burg Satzvey is a beautiful castle nestled in the hills near Koln. They have fantastic Medieval festivals and Jousts there. I highly recommend attending one!

A hidden gem in the region. Beautiful facade of the castle makes for amazing pictures. Must visit! Check whether there are any activities before hand at the castle so that you can plan accordingly. Spend time around the lake and you will observe the family of otters swimming or laying around 😉

Dunkelbunter Sommermarkt was absolutely lovely! I greatly enjoyed myself Very accessible with public transport
Echo — Google review
Every year during spring time, the castle offers a few medieval festivals. We visited the witchfest/Hexenfest. One can actually buy ticket earlier and safe abt EUR2, or buy on the spot. The parking costed EUR3. We had to walk about 10 mins to the castle. The walkway was not babystroller friendly. The atmostphere could have been more 'witchy'. There were many stalls selling food and merchandise. There was also owl and hawk on exhibit for petting.
Yatie J — Google review
A beautiful castle. Even though it was closed when I visited it I was glad I went. The main reason I visit castles is for the architecture and feel of them anyway, so I enjoyed my short stroll around. So it must worth it when the activities are on! There is an open air museum nearby so you could easily visit the castle and the museum in a day if you don't spent all day at either, which is what I did and recommend.
Hussein H — Google review
We have been there for middle age festival once and the organization was pretty successful. Kids enjoyed it a lot and for me the no 1 reason is flammlachs and the take away food you may only find in these kind of festivals. If you plan to visit prefer mittelaltermarkt and watch the shows of knights on horses👍

Museum
The museum LZB Bunker Satzvey offers a highly intriguing and informative bunker tour that provides valuable insights into the history of the Cold War. This historical site serves as a significant document from that era, shedding light on its cultural and political implications. Visitors can expect to learn about the period's events and gain a deeper understanding of how it shaped society. The experience is both educational and enjoyable, allowing visitors to explore this piece of history in a relaxed atmosphere.
(Translated by Google) We were there today, October 6th, 2024. Thank you for the extremely interesting and entertaining tour and for allowing me to take so many photos ;-) Hans-Peter Kern's tour was very entertaining and he conducted it in a really exciting way. An impressive contemporary historical building from the Cold War, which is definitely worth a visit and should be seen. Especially since it gives you an insight into the plan of the financial world at the time and what was planned in the event of a third world war. And for me that was a rather unknown asset in preparing for an emergency or the time afterwards. Attached are a few of my photos ;-) (Original) Wir waren heute, am 06.10.2024 vor Ort.

(Translated by Google) We took part in the inspection of the LZB alternative seat today and were very impressed. We registered online in advance and paid the amount of money on site, which will be used exclusively for the maintenance of the bunker. The tour was conducted by Hans-Peter Kern, who made the 2-hour tour very interesting thanks to his friendly, open manner and his extensive background knowledge. Our son (9 years old) was very impressed by the Lost Place and the atmosphere. He was particularly fascinated by the vault with the opening of the armored door and the command center. But he prefers to stay away from the fried meatballs with tunke. You can immediately feel how much passion Mr. Kern and everyone involved put into this property and we hope that it will be preserved for a long time. Thank you again for the very exciting journey back into contemporary history.

Bruder-Klaus-Feldkapelle is a tiny chapel with a minimalist design located in a field, offering an open space for worship or scheduled tours. The journey to the chapel is described as magical and mystical, with the walk adding to the overall experience. Visitors are advised to choose their timing carefully to avoid crowds, especially during public German holidays.
From outside, a strange block, a crystal emerged from the soil, but inside the stars are greeting you as you raise your gaze for the light. Amazing. A place of silence and reflection.

The architect's work evokes artistic bubbling. A church sculpted from fire. The interior walls are adorned with tree trunk patterns. Light filters through the ceiling and over 300 holes inlaid with glass balls, illuminating the narrow, mysterious space. I suspect this Peter was Chinese in a previous life. Otherwise, how could such a European church possess all five elements? 🤗

Magical & mystical place. The walk to get here is part of experience and increases the expectation. You will not be disappointed. Truly great 'in situ' architecture that makes you uqiet and reflective. Magnificent!

Omg, what an amazing place to discover! It tells about architecture and community and about what a chapel really essentialism should offer. Park in the village and take the walk there, it's great discovering the building from afar.

Kommern Open Air Museum is a large folk museum with 75 historic buildings, farm animals, and costumed docents. It offers a glimpse into rural life in the region through traditional crafts, hands-on activities, and interactions with staff in period costumes. Visitors can explore the extensive grounds and learn about traditional farming techniques. Additionally, the museum features Satzvey Castle from the 14th century, known as the 'fairytale castle.'
Nice food at the restaurant! And super cool old houses. I do recommend bringing snacks and drinks. There will be A LOT of walking. We had to take a nap at a bench.

Interesting open-air museum to learn about the different architectural styles in the region. Many of the old buildings were moved from other villages to this location or recreated. They are well-preserved and contain original furniture and objects with specific themes. You can also find some farm animals, but children cannot touch them (kein Streichelzoo). The signage to get there is quite poor. You also need to walk up a hill from the parking lot to the entrance, which is difficult if you have a cart or stroller. Forget about going in if someone is in a wheelchair. Most of the paths are covered with cobblestones (Kopfsteinpflaster), making it quite difficult and uncomfortable to walk. The park area is absurdly large, and you cannot visit all the points in just one day if you are with small children or people in a wheelchair. The restaurant offers good food options, and the staff is friendly.

I have been driving around Europe for 14 weeks so far, 8 different countries, many different attractions and this place is up there with the best. So well set up, it's like going back in time. Much bigger than I expected with beautiful paths thru the forest to each section. I LOVED it so much, can't recommend high enough, not to be missed

Very interesting place for people, which like walk and imagine. Here you will find old houses with old furniture inside, old mill and interesting exhibition with wax figures. Good restaurant, not high prise and 2-3 hours for walk in wood.
Yuliia K — Google review
This is a nicely expanding open air museum. Since last year and our last visit there are a few new item to see, combined with the extras today with the horses and tractors meeting it made for an interesting day out. The children always have a lot of fun to see what has changed and to see the animals as well. As said the horses were an extra highlight. As this was all included in the lvr family card it makes it a real bargain as well. Well worth a visit and always worth getting some fresh bread which they make on site.
Steve R — Google review
Nicely built and well arranged according to geography and/or time period, with lovely walkways in-between, with many roads and directions for a long or short or thorough visit. Authentic interior. However, while the description on the outside is in English, basically all of the exhibits or stories inside the houses are explained in German only. Very interesting is the exhibit "Wir Rheinländer", telling the story of this particular area from early 1800 until late 1940s, where you walk along a city street and peer into windows, looking at wax dolls in different settings, adding a couple of years for each window, and seeing how culture and people change as time goes by. For a full visit of the entire museum you should plan at least 4-5 hours.

They couldn't help the rain. It was still good though. In the future, I will pay attention to what events are going on at Eicks Castle in the future. !!! Thank you to everyone involved!!! Comfortable hotel, very clean, friendly service. Good breakfast. It is attached to a popular restaurant and bar, so all amenities in-house. Parking lot in the rear. We stayed there to visit some of the nearby Eifel sites (Mechernich lead mine and Roman aquaduct). There are limitless walking and hiking opportunities.

Good restaurant... fair prices...didn't use the hotel. Not far from the Freilichtmuseum ( steep walk)

(Translated by Google) It is really a very nice and good hotel. Although there was no longer a double room available, they successfully tried to accommodate us. Haus Stollen has great service and really lovely staff. The rooms and the house are very clean. I've experienced something different there. And the cuisine, good home cooking, is a hit. Thanks for the stay, we'll be back.

Small restaurant within the open air museum of Kommern and in a historical house. Staff was very friendly, service quick. Food options were local and varied, quality good but very salty. Prices a bit above average for the region.
TH3 T — Google review
The food lacks flavor and it’s really simple dishes, for instance, my friend ordered the noodles and it was just the boiled noodles with tomato sauce and it wasn’t even mixed, and didn’t have cheese inside or anything. We went on a Monday however the service was slow and they didn’t bring the food to one of my friends. As well the service was pretty bad, we saw everyone getting their food before us even tho it was very simple dishes. Wouldn’t recommend, if you’re visiting the museum just wait until you can eat outside someplace else

Easily the best asian restaurant in the area. We ordered 5 different dishes and all turned out to be fantastically authentic. It's a mixed vietnamese and south Chinese restaurant. The owner is friendly and service is top notch! He also gave us free desserts.

We love this restaurant! We happened to drive by in the afternoon. It’s in a small town but boy they have authentic Vietnamese and Chinese dishes! Sooo tasty! The restaurant is rather new and nicely decorated. And the toilets were so clean, and it reflects the attitude and quality of the owner and staff! Highly recommended!

(Translated by Google) Invited for lunch and we had our own vegan buffet at our table. All of the vegan dishes served to us are not on the menu 'yet'; there will be an extra vegan part on the next menu. But even now it is possible to get vegan dishes at any time by pre-ordering. (Translated by Google) Very inconspicuous from the outside, but if you open the door and go through the curtain, you end up in a very cozy breakfast café that is lovingly run by a single lady. It is therefore highly advisable to reserve a table by phone in advance so that you can really enjoy the great atmosphere and the delicious breakfast. Very tasty, fresh and partly homemade food ends up on the cake stand and coffee is included in the price - great value for money and very friendly hospitality!
