National Trust - Petworth House and Park is a grand 17th-century mansion set in a sprawling 700-acre deer park, famously depicted in J.M.W. Turner's paintings. The estate has a rich history involving royalty, religious upheavals, and influential figures like Capability Brown. Visitors can explore the mansion on guided tours, with the North Gallery showcasing remarkable paintings and sculptures. Alternatively, they can freely wander through the extensive grounds or observe the fallow deer in the Deer Park.
A very interesting property, the exterior is not much to shout about, looks more like a prison block however the interior is quite amazing with highly painted walls and ceilings by famous artists. The hanging art collections are a joy to view and the staff were very informative and helpful. Also visited the Turner vision exhibition which was a little disappointing. Overall a very pleasant day out but more for adults rather than children.

One of the best Trust houses we have visited. Great art works everywhere in the huge rooms. It was nice to have some seating to relax and enjoy. The grounds are well kept making it a pleasant walk from the car parking area. Seats in the cafe were limited during the rain showers, as one would expect.
Roger C — Google review
Another National Trust gem! Had a wonderful day there. So much to see and wonderful walks in the grounds and deer park. The art collection is outstanding and as usual the volunteers in the house were great. Had an interesting talk in the square dining room about the history of the family. Found the kitchens fascinating!Great cafe too. Highly recommend.
Julie G — Google review
Visiting Petworth House is a great way to spend a few hours. Impressive artwork, including many Turner paintings, sculptures, a Chapel, a deer park, servants quarters, well kept gardens and a cafe with plenty of seating. I found the Main House interesting, and the furnishings gave an idea of how life may have been, but I always like visiting the servants quarters, as they give me more of a feel for the character of the House. The Guides were very informative and came up with interesting facts which added to the experience. The House is about a ten minutes walk from Reception, with a slight incline in places. There is a large car park which was showing as "full" when I arrived, but I, and the cars following behind, managed to find a space.
Debbie M — Google review
Petworth is a NT place with huge grounds and a large house. The ground are beautiful and lead down to a lake from the house. The ground here can be quite boggy, even in good weather so be wearing suitable footwear. The house itself is large and you can walk round a lot of it but because the family still inhabit it, a lot of it is still private. They do open up certain extra spaces at points so worth checking out, for example in Oct some of the upstairs is open. Opposite the house are the servants quarters which have been turned into some viewing space alongside a bookshop and cafe. Also there are toilets in here, the only other toilets are before the entrance. There are NT volunteers around the house and they were all very friendly and helpful. The house is quite a walk from the car park however so you will need to be able to walk a distance or use one of the wheelchairs you can borrow (probably best to try and book one). The gardens are spacious and varied from the open space down to the lake by the house to the woodland and dogs on leads can be walked here (not in the house). Definitely worth a visit, in the colder months probably and hour or twos visit but in summer we have spent several hours here exploring the grounds and having a picnic etc.
Susie D — Google review
My first National Trust to visit and this place did not disappoint. Very lovely art displays inside, interesting history, good restaurant, friendly staff. There’s a super big walk outside the actual property which we also did, a lot of deer around the area which was lovely to see. Lake area also beautiful. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a nice summer activity.
Phil M — Google review
A truly wonderful day trip to the picturesque village of Petworth allowed us to stroll through its cobbled streets, full of charming cafés and many art galleries displaying antiques and beautiful pieces of art. There’s a convenient parking area and a spacious café within the Petworth House grounds — a perfect place to take a break and look over the map provided at reception. The interior architecture and the abundance of artworks take you back in time, while the gardens outside are stunning and beautifully maintained, offering a heavenly atmosphere in every season. Definitely worth a visit — take your time and enjoy every minute!

Petworth House and Park is one of the most beating National Trust sites I have visited. The House is packed with incredible art and history and the surrounding park is breathtaking, wide open landscape, ancient trees and herds of deer roaming freely .The cafe shop are lovely too.

Petworth Antiques Market, located on East Street, is a treasure trove of over 40 local dealers offering a wide range of items from bric-a-brac to heirlooms. Visitors can also explore Rountree Tyron Gallery on Market Square for art spanning from the 18th century to present day. New Street Decorative and The Kevis Gallery are perfect for antique and vintage furniture as well as unique works by artist Tabitha McBain.
We did a whistle tour of Petworth and found this gem of an antique shop. There is a rich spectrum of nick nacks from yesteryears, from toys to posters to books, and decorative antique vases to sculptures. Our family are fans of Bargain Hunt on TV - this is the type of shop we would love to have more time to spend in. Highly recommended -- we are looking to come back.

I love this place. Come in each year when on holiday. Last year I saw a book, which I didn't buy, but regretted it. Back at our holiday destination I decided I really wanted the book. Contacted the Petworth Antiques Market to ask if the trader had an online presence. The manager came back and said they didn't, but, without asking, he put the book aside for a few days for me, if I should decide to call back. I did and am delighted with my book! Will be back again this year!

Forest Gallery provides a fortunate opportunity to discover paintings by beloved artists. Overcoming the potential challenges of investing in and shipping large artworks, their team ensures a seamless experience. The paintings arrive in impeccable condition, creating a desire to revisit the gallery both online and in person during visits to the UK. The process of selecting and purchasing artwork from their website is effortless, with prompt shipping and secure packaging that remains easily accessible.
Great Personal Service: having identified online 2 paintings by Jay Nottingham, I contacted Alfie at Forest Gallery to set up a video call for me to compare the paintings to select one, as I live some 2 1/2 hours away. Alfie organised this for the next morning, and Lizanne and Cristina presented and reviewed with me: decision made, the painting arrived well packed by courier the next morning. What a great Personal Service, thank you!

I absolutely love my foxhound and little pig. My foxhound looks like my sweet Lily, happily running through the woods. Ears flying, tail up, bounding over some rocks following a scent. I love seeing her so happy! And my little piggy I just couldn’t resist! He’s doing exactly what you’d expect a little piggy to do- gobble up the last bits! Their customer service is unmatched! From the order to the delivery, every step felt like they were holding my hand. They send the most lovely emails, making me feel like family. Thank you! I will be back and cherish my beautiful Lily and piggy (to be named soon!).

Excellent Service. I am thrilled with my Suzie Marsh bronzed mouse sculptures, recently purchased. I already owned one and wanted to add to them as a personally appropriate remembrance of a lost relative. The service received from Forest Gallery was wonderful. Excellent packaging and a friendly and welcoming experience. They look fabulous in my home. Thankyou.

I am absolutely delighted with my limited edition print by Hiroko Lewis. The photos don’t do it justice due to the light but it looks perfect on my wall. I have now ordered my next print! The service provided by the gallery’s team was exemplary. Warm, helpful, efficient and professional. I have no hesitation in recommending the Gallery to anyone considering purchasing their own desired artwork.

Forest Gallery has an outstanding range of artwork to choose from. Our perfectly framed prints arrived quickly and extremely well packaged. All round a very pleasant experience at Forest Gallery.

We were very pleased with our recent on-line purchase from Forest Gallery! Cristina was professional and polite, always responding promptly to our e-mails. We particularly appreciated her reassurance concerning our painting’s safe delivery to our Canadian home. The painting arrived well-protected, professionally packaged and considerably faster than expected. We also loved the included hand-written note! Forest Gallery was highly professional from start to finish, and we would not hesitate to purchase from them again in the future.

I ordered a limited edition print, ready for framing. This is the first time I have ordered directly from a gallery and I am delighted to say it was a very positive experience. The print was very well packaged, along with information about the artist and a handwritten thank you card. All were sent promptly via courier. I shall definitely consider purchasing further art from Forest Gallery in the future

Amazing food, lovely staff, some of the best Indian food I've had. Must admit it was quite cold inside. Will definitely come again if I'm in the area.

This was by far the best Indian food I have ever had. My partner and I popped in last night (Monday) without a booking. Lovely welcome, wonderful service and absolutely delicious food. We both had a special (me the coconut chilli fish curry, him the kebabs), shared a rice, a dry veggie curry and a stuffed paratha. Soooo good. It’s two hours from home - we were driving back from Glasto - but I’d travel to Petworth again just to eat their food, haha! Thoroughly recommend!

Delicious Indian restaurant. Delicious Tandoori Murg chicken. Devine. Very nice and helpful staff. £60 for 1 starter, 2 mains, rice and naan. Beautiful village Petworth is worth to see after lunch or dinner. Restaurant is really worth to visit. If you like Indian cuisine or you wish to taste it, you will be more than happy.

Owner MUST have Shares with B.T My Family , Table of four were given a table by the Window , near front desk . The booking was made same day . The service was poor not busy ... 6:45 pm . To get the order taken by the waiter was a mission , ordered drinks . Then starters and Mains waited for ever Small soup as free appetiser appeared , no drinks on table ..... Restaurant still not busy the owner was at the front desk , with not a care in the world , on the phone for nearly our entire Meal . Starters arrived Nann Bread garlic was excellent with a mention . Other starters also tasty . Mains arrived like nearly 40-55 minutes later , and to be honest all of us by now had lost appertite , it took for ever . The owner still on the phone .... When the mains arrived The Special of the day chicken dish @ 14.95 , was pricey but in all fairness was tasty , saffron rice was slightly dry and not fluffy as normal . Chicken curry with coconut base 9.95 was a dark sauce and to be honest was average , chic pea curry had the same apperance and same sauce , vegetable curry also looked the same sauce ... it could be chef may need to go to Spec Savers because it tasted all the same and looked identical just with different ingredients . The waiter seemed rushed and NOT able to handle the service dropping cutlery and not able to hold more than three plates in one time . Restaurant room were we sat had no more than 20 covers ... we ate then called the waiter for the bill 78.00 Appox 4 cokes and to Shandy ... didn't complain as food was ok ,after paying and walking out of entrance no body said thank you or good night ...... shocking service and food was ok , best was the bread ......

Amazing atmosphere, friendly staff, Set in the undercroft of the buildings in Petworth it is a unique dining experience. Reasonably priced and great food. Takeaway or dine in. Definitely worth the steps down to this below ground restaurant.

We owe a huge thank you to Sitar and the team at Basmati Petworth for providing us with an exceptional birthday meal for my Dad. What a kind and thoughtful man Sitar is, surprising us all with a birthday cake! The main meal was outstanding and we laughed and smiled throughout the evening. Would highly recommend a visit, not just because of the great service, but the unusual nature of eating in a stunning underground restaurant.

Just had a really good meal there. Staff are lovely. Love the rustic cellar setting that is beautifully lit. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The food is seasoned perfectly, not too spicy (unless you order a really spicy dish!). The Korma sauce is gorgeous. I will definitely be going back there with my husband. A brilliant restaurant right on my doorstep!

Nestled within the stunning Petworth House, the Audit Room Café offers a delightful escape for visitors seeking a cozy spot to unwind. This charming café is known for its inviting atmosphere and serves a variety of beverages, including decaffeinated options and soya milk. Guests can indulge in delicious gluten-free cakes while enjoying quality time with family or friends in this grand setting. A tip for newcomers: opting for the larger drink size is recommended, as the regular cup may be on the smaller side.
Was really impressed with the service here. Was very busy but the staff were very efficient and quickly got through the que. The cake was really tasty and moist. Coffee was really hot and good quality. There's plenty of tables and they were well spaced. There's a good range of food for light lunch or morning tea.

Can't comment on the cafe ,as each time we have gone in( 3 or 4 so we've given up ! )there have been a lot of large tables taken up by walkers who have empty cups and are just having a chat.Lovely but not great for those who wanted a meal, several groups came in at the same time and non of us were able to eat there....such a shame. But not sure how this could be resolved ?

Worth the visit after the house. The coffee and walnut cake was decent and the hot chocolate was very good. The interior is good as well.

Nice place for a cuppa and chat with family/friends. Gluten free cakes available and decaff coffee and soya milk. Such a grand room to have a cafe. Only tip would be to get a large size drink as the regular size cup is not that big. Think it was only 35p extra to go large. You can also go here without being NT member. Will definitely return again.

Thoroughly enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday (June 1st). Friendly waiters, astonishingly quick service and generous portions. Despite it currently being out of season, sitting under Wisteria is a lovely touch. Competitively priced, somewhere I’ll definitely be returning to!

Watch your head! Amazing old building and the rooms are well furnished, but watch your head for the low beams! It’s part of the character and charm, but don’t forget to duck! The breakfast, for me, was epic! Every element was very tasty, extremely well presented and high quality. Superb coffee and juice too. I didn’t see the black pudding on the menu - but thank you - I loved it!

Wonderful visit for party of 7, we'd booked for 6 but no issue on arrival. My guests from Arizona were enchanted with the pub's history, kindly explained by Matt the manager. He took time to enthisiastically describe Petworth's origins and how The Angel fitted in to early life there. Food, service, beers, ambience all delightful. The trout was exceptional!

I had to stop at the inn when I had a punctured tyre very early in the morning and the staff were so kind and helpful. They allowed me to use their WiFi to call assistance and were kind enough to point me to a local garage they knew that would fit my new tyre at a good price. They also offered me breakfast and allowed me to stay at their restaurant until assistance arrived. I ordered a coffee while I waited and it was actually really good too! So five stars for the friendliness of the staff and for the delicious coffee!

We popped in for lunch after visiting Petworth House NT. A showery Tuesday 22nd June. The restaurant was light and airy. I chose the Local fish and chips. What I wasn't expecting was possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had. Really fresh Haddock, crispy batter with not a drop of excess oil, triple cooked chunky chips, again perfectly drained and amazingly crispy, peas and samphire. The chef deserves a commendation for serving a cracking lunch.

Probably the greatest burger I’ve ever had - perfectly presented, full of flavour and incredibly satisfying! Kudos to the chef and staff. A lovely dining experience.
Chris B — Google review
Nice building and room with some great staff (the man that served breakfast) and not so great (the lady who bluntly told us the bar was shut at 10:40pm on Saturday as we walked back in - even though we hadn't asked!). Three stars because for this price customers deserve more. Hotel guests should at least be served at the bar until 11pm, bed was very hard, breakfast limited (cooked part fine but ridiculously few other options - eg fruit was pears or plums and no plain yoghurt). Seems like the management could so easily win this back and I hope they do.

The Hungry Guest is a wonderful deli in the little market town of Petworth. They sell a lot of their own homemade products - I’m very partial to their Green Thai green curry sauce - as well other brands. I’m very partial to cheese and they have a cheese room which is chilled. It did send happy chills down my back when I first saw it They also do sandwiches and brew fresh coffee. My wife loves their pecan pie

Historical landmark
Nestled in the charming town of Petworth, the Petworth Cottage Museum offers a glimpse into the humble lives of estate workers in 1910. The museum is actually a restored Leconfield Estate worker's cottage, meticulously furnished to reflect life during the Edwardian era. Visitors can explore this quaint house and learn about its former resident, Mrs. Mary Cummings. Additionally, the museum boasts a rare collection of Petworth Goss China, adding to its historical charm.
Tiny cottage but worth a visit...how they used to live.

It was really worth a visit. The lovely ladies showed us around giving us lots of history about the cottage and the residents that lived there.

E-Street Bar & Grill is a sophisticated dining spot featured in the Michelin Guide, offering an eclectic menu that includes high-quality lamb burgers and nouvelle cuisine. The establishment boasts a fine wine list and is known for its knowledgeable French sommelier. Additionally, Cherrys serves up quality sandwiches, quiches, and salads at this location. The Angel Inn has been transformed into a mid-range restaurant with a 17th-century pub ambiance.
I popped in on the off chance that they may have a table on a Sunday afternoon - and was lucky! The staff were welcoming and accommodating to my gluten intolerance. The food was great! Overall, a nice atmosphere/environment to be in - I would definitely recommend a visit.

Overall, a lovely place to dine. I initially sat at the bar and then moved to the restaurant. I highly recommend the duck bao buns - newly created and added to the menu. Rich in flavour with light and fluffy buns, accompanied with a beautifully spicy sauce. The restaurant only had a few other customers and was not even half full on a summer Friday night, so it was missing an actively buzzing atmosphere. The staff were pleasant and efficient.

We went here for the first time to celebrate a birthday and it was incredible. The food was amazing and we particularly loved the beef croquettes. The service was stand out and very attentive and they even offered to help us with blowing up balloons. We will definitely be coming back!

A very odd experience overall. They handled our issue very well, and the main course was actually nice, albeit small portions, otherwise we’d score it lower. Firstly, we popped in late afternoon to enquire about booking but we were told there was no availability at 7pm, so 7.30pm it was, we arrived to just 6 other people in the entire restaurant and advised we could take our pick from any of 3 available tables. So why 7pm wasn’t an option we don’t know. A “Drumstick” Cocktail was ordered but we were then told the man who made the cocktails was starting in about 10 minutes, odd in itself and no other drink was offered in the meantime. Cocktail man arrived but we were told, quite abruptly, he couldn’t make a Drumstick Cocktail and we were presented with a much abridged cocktail list versus that available on their website. My wife opted for a Gin & Lemonade instead, which they managed to get wrong and serve with a tonic. Correcting the mistake a bottle of Sprite was plonked on the table instead. Then came the starters of Lamb Croquettes, which were in fact just fat, literally fat, wrapped in breadcrumbs. We sent these straight back. The bread was overdone slices of sourdough, but at least we got two each, good job really or we’d have left hungry. The bill was presented with the starters removed and only one main meal charged, so the complaint was well handled, hence 3 stars versus one or two. But overall a very odd and unsatisfactory experience. We won’t be rushing back I’m afraid.
Richard G — Google review
Really nice atmosphere as you walk in and staff are friendly, polite and efficient. We came in just as they opened and got to sit indoors with windows to the sunny courtyard. Decor is beautiful! We were offered water straight away and then after getting us a jug, they proceeded to take the food order and main drinks. We got pink lemonade and a bottle of Birra Morretti (no beer on tap here) along with Jerusalem Artichoke Tart, Shaved Romanesco and Pomegranate as well as Ham Hock Terrine with picked figs and beetroot ketchup. Absolutely delicious! For mains we got Venison, parsnips, venison croquettes along with pork tenderloin with artichoke root raised red cabbage. Great food! Must say that the quality of food comes with a fitting price tag as we paid just under £85 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks. But it's great place to go to for an occasion :D Will be coming back 100%

We were in Petworth and decided to visit the Bar for early evening coffee and drinks. The indoor seating in the bar area is very comfortable, and the place is stylishly decorated. The staff were friendly, inviting, and helpful. The coffee and drinks were very nice, although there was no bar food. The restaurant area also looks stylish, and we would definitely like to visit again to have lunch or dinner. Well recommended.

We were given a warm welcome and the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was very tasty and the portions were good. We also had a couple of very nice cocktails.

Food Amazing on the whole, I had the monkfish Bisque, couldn't speak highly enough of it, my friend had something she wasn't keen on, but it's already off the menu after a wee chat with the lovely chef! Wonderful staff, thumbs up to Jude, very efficient, as they all were. Have the Voigner, the South African one, full of herby flavours!

Tiffins of Petworth is a remarkable tea house that offers an exceptional breakfast experience. The ingredients used are top-notch, resulting in delectable and flavorful dishes. The service provided is fast and amiable, adding to the overall pleasant atmosphere. Despite being situated in an area with high-priced establishments, Tiffins of Petworth provides excellent value for money. Their coffee is absolutely delightful, and their freshly baked Victoria Sponge is moist and delicious.

This is a true gem of a place, great food and the loveliest staff. Sausages and biscuits on tap for your 4 legged friends 🐾 We are lucky enough to have come here regularly for years. You can always rely on great service, lovely food and a home from home environment. To top it all off, the catering they offer for events is second to none, Gemma thinks of everything and offers a wide array of delicious options that make you look like the hostess with the mostess and leave your guests going back for thirds 💓

The sausage roll was great and the service was friendly and attentive. However it’s safe to say the worst pizza I have eaten- very bland with too much cheese. Could have got a better frozen one. The cake we had was not too great either.

Lovely small cafe serving light lunch, a selection of cakes, leaf teas, posh pop sodas. Jacket potatoes, sandwiches, including toasted, with a choice of fillings, and much more. Great ambience and atmosphere. Good prices, too. Got busy, very quickly. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable visit. Popped in for an iced latte and a tea, small cake (a very tasty Bakewell muffin!) to give us a break from having a wander about Petworth. Reasonable prices and welcoming staff, highly recommended! And we happened to be sat next to Vinnie Jones who lives nearby, as he was also a patron at the time. Great stuff

Cherry's Deli & Bakery is a charming spot located in Petworth's Golden Square, offering both dine-in and takeaway options. Owned by lifestyle author Cherry Menlove, the deli provides an array of gourmet food products, sandwiches, and made-to-order salads. Visitors can enjoy indoor and outdoor seating in a cozy courtyard next to a bookshop and florist. The menu features a nice range of healthy options alongside delicious treats like brownies and freshly baked goods.
What an excellent café! They were closing for the day but the lovely ladies working let us buy coffee and pastries that were delicious. We also had the lucky to meet the owner Cherry that was so sweet and generous.

A pretty cafe with outdoor seating. Sitting in the sun was lovely. Dropped stars as three members of staff behind the counter, 2 doing nothing, one serving. The one who served the small queue whilst the others just seem to ‘be there’. The queue could have been moved quicker if one took the order and the others prepared it. Absolutely no interaction from the staff apart from telling us the price. £9 for a small Pash ‘n’ Shoot smoothie and a small cappuccino seemed expensive. Sandwiches in the chilled counter for nearly £11. Not surprisingly it was still there at honey 3pm. Will we return? Possibly not.
Deb L — Google review
Visited today for coffee and cake. The venue is beautiful (although extremely cold) and the waitress was lovely. However, there were no vegan cake options (out of about six cakes), and the only vegan food was a samosa or bhaji! Extremely disappointing and very much behind the times; far better places available close-by
David H — Google review
So painfully slow service, coffee was awful ! My Cesar salad cost £13.50 as I added bacon NO chicken just literally tons of croutons and lettuce hardly any bacon. My husband had a tuna and cucumber sandwich he said the bread was nice but a very average sandwich. Huge chunks of cucumber and lacking on the mayo. I only had a water the bill was £28 so expensive ! Never would I go back. Wouldn’t waste your money !
Jane B — Google review
A sweet, cosy cafe. Indoor and outdoor seating in a courtyard, next to a bookshop and florist, and right next to the main car park. Nice range of healthy options. The Coco Loco smoothie was very tasty (mango, pineapple, coconut, lime, mint). Pictured is a gluten free pea quiche, which was very good. Dropped a star due to the sausage sandwich, which was made with doughy bread and cold, flavourless sausage. Could do with better ingredients to match the rest of the menu.
Heather Z — Google review
We stopped by for lunch - sandwiches - and a drink. I know Petworth is expensive, but £10 for a sandwich? The sandwiches were OK - an average tuna mayo and a decent coronation chicken, but nothing to write home about. Drinks, likewise, were expensive for nothing very special (plus Mrs j got to carry them to the table herself). It was OK, but there are better, cheaper options in Petworth. On the plus side, there is a nice little outdoor seated area in a kind of walkway/courtyard, so that was pleasant.
J — Google review
Lovely cafe but my goodness what painfully slow service. We counted 5 members of staff but only one person taking orders and making the drinks/ coffees at the same time. Not our first visit and this was our previous experience too. Such a long tedious wait for everyone to get served. Completely unnecessary not sure what other staff members were doing but no interest in friendly customer service that we saw.

Nestled in the charming town of Petworth, The Star is a historic pub that boasts an inviting atmosphere with its distinctive brick exterior and beautifully curved beams. This delightful establishment serves up hearty comfort food staples, including mouthwatering burgers and traditional fish and chips, all complemented by a fantastic selection of real ales. Visitors rave about the warm hospitality from the staff, making it an ideal spot for both casual lunches and cozy dinners.
This was our first time at The Star in Petworth. I had a roast which was amazing. So much food, so delicious. Excellent value for money. This is under new management and the new owners are friendly, accommodating and welcoming. I recommend a visit (or more than one) to this cosy, quaint pub tucked away in the market square. We will definitely go back.

We were passing through and looking forward to a nice meal after a long journey, but The Star pub left us sorely disappointed. We called ahead to book a table and were initially excited about our meal. The staff promptly took our orders, but then the long wait began. It took 50 minutes for our food to arrive, despite the dining area being nearly empty. During our wait, the staff were noisily sorting out cutlery, seemingly for the entire month, making the experience unbearable. When our food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. I ordered a chicken burger and fries; while the fries were nice (reminiscent of McDonald’s, which I consider a positive), the burger was the worst I’ve ever had—completely tasteless, like eating cardboard. My partner ordered fish and chips and found it equally unimpressive. We paid over £45 for two meals, a pint of beer, and a pint of pop. This price would have been acceptable if the food had been tasty, but unfortunately, it was not. We cannot recommend this place. If you still wish to put yourself through this experience, by all means, avoid the chicken burger. It seemed more like a drinks establishment for the locals, as there were plenty of people in their work clothes enjoying a pint. Perhaps it’s a nice spot for a drink, but as far as dining goes, it fell short of expectations.

A Perfect Summer Dining Experience We had the pleasure of dining at this incredible restaurant on a warm summer’s day, and everything about the experience was flawless. We sat outside, enjoying the beautiful weather and relaxed ambiance — the setting alone was enough to make the afternoon special. The food was absolutely superb. Every dish was crafted with care, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. You can truly taste the quality and passion in each bite. What made it even better was the outstanding service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. They anticipated our needs without being intrusive, and their menu knowledge helped us make excellent choices. Between the amazing food, impeccable service, and the lovely outdoor setting, this was a five-star experience from start to finish. Can’t wait to return!

The Star truly stands out as a stellar dining experience, earning its glowing reviews one satisfied customer at a time.

Limited number of interesting main courses suggests food freshly prepared. Excellent value at around £16.00 each. 4 of us each chose a different dish, all delicious. Friendly staff.
Colin W — Google review
I am that awkward customer who needs every change to the menu! Being on a diet we asked if I could have a smaller portion of my choice and was told no problem at all. Well, if that’s a small portion then a big portion would be huge! I had the chicken supreme with dauphinous potatoes which I’ve not had before and hubby had the Star burger with chips which he said was delicious too. The chef (Joey) did laugh when I asked for the rest of mine in a doggy bag but hey, I have tea now too! Nothing was too much trouble, we had a lovely lunch and will definitely be back again (sorry guys ha ha)
Hannah J — Google review
Expensive food. Venison cottage pie with seasonal veg. No flavour, very small potion, seasonal veg was about 6 tiny carrots ontop of alot of mash. Butternut risotto, without the butternut. Service was dreadful, no customer service. Staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. Overall very disappointed.
Carole M — Google review
Admittedly some years since previously visiting this pub, but it has completely gone downhill. From an atmospheric cosy country pub to a slightly grubby looking bland bar with no atmosphere . Beef sandwich on brown bread ordered as they informed us they didn’t have any ciabatta. which was on the menu. Also ordered salt and pepper squid. The sandwich turned up on soggy white bread with a few pieces of limp lettuce, completely saturated in mayonnaise on both sides of the bread. (no mention of the mayonnaise on the menu). The fries were okay, but slightly overcooked. The squid was breadcrumbed rather than in batter, which is fine had it had any flavour at all - no sign of the Salt and Pepper flavouring! Would strongly advise to walk on past …..

Just a short five-minute stroll from the stunning Petworth Park and House, it’s an ideal spot for those looking to explore the area.
We visited Petworth House with some friends and previously booked a table for lunch for 12.30, at The Stonemasons. Unfortunately, our friends were delayed and so we had to alter the time to 1.30pm. The Stonemasons staff did this with no fuss at all, they were very obliging and helpful, and the overall service was great. The food was excellent, with a wide range of choice, and some different courses from the normal fare, all of which were very tasty and with excellent quality of ingredients, excellently prepared and presented. All four of us would highly recommend the Stonemasons as exceptionally good eatery and traditional country pub. We will definitely return and recommend to all our friends and acquaintances.

This is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay, our room was beautiful, kept in the original style, comfortable bed and incredible power shower with bath aswell. The owners are lovely people, couldn't do enough for us. We stayed for two nights, didn't try the breakfast but had dinner one night- hard recommend on the stonemasons burger! Delicious. They keep their pints well too. It's perfectly placed for exploring Petworth house and park over the road, and a 5 minute wander into the heart of the town. Would definitely return if we are in the area again, thanks guys for a lovely weekend 😊

Right then, if you're after a proper chilled spot with some cracking grub, this pub is spot on! They've got a brilliant selection of beers and the stuff from the grill is absolutely banging. I'd definitely recommend the seafood and the steaks – they're cooked perfectly and are proper juicy! The staff are all lovely and helpful, and the prices are decent too. Will one hundred percent be going back there again!

If their food is anything to go by then I'm sure their rooms are equally as amazing! We happened by the Stonemasons Inn because a different place nearby hadn't opened their restaurant yet, and we were all so pleased to have stopped here instead. The 4 of us all agreed it was some of the best food we'd ever eaten. The presentation, the smell, the taste - we really couldn't fault a single thing and it's clear the chef is passionate about what he does. The waiting staff were also very personable and welcoming to us - the service was top notch from everyone we spoke to. When we were reading the menu outside, a local told us on his way in, "You'll love it in here" and he was absolutely right. We will 100% be visiting again next time we're in the area. Thank you and keep up the fantastic work!

What a gem! Stumbles across this after a trip to Petworth House mid afternoon last Sunday. We had no booking but they kindly fit us in and the service was great. So friendly, attentive and really supportive and informative relating my allergy. I’m gluten intolerant and so pubs can sometimes be difficult but nothing was a problem and I got to enjoy a delicious roast. Unlimited gravy was great too! My partner doesn’t have allergies and went for the 4 meat roast, it was a great size portion (very big!) and the Yorkshire on top looked incredible. Shame we’re not local to visit again soon but we’d definitely visit again if we were in the area.

We discovered this absolute gem of a place after a day trip to Littlehampton. We stopped for a meal only on our journey home. The waiting staff are very friendly and attentive but the food was absolutely amazing, the waitress told us the chef is her Dad, what a talented man he is, the presentation, temperature of the food and the flavours were out of this world. This pub is almost 40 miles from our home, but we will be back very soon 😁. Congratulations to you all on a beautiful establishment with food to die for.

We were passing through Petworth, and stopped here for a late lunch on a sunny Friday afternoon. The pub is dog-friendly but we chose to sit in the pretty garden. Guests can enjoy local Sussex beers, including selections from nearby Langham Brewery, while savoring seasonal dishes in the delightful restaurant or on the lovely garden terrace.
This is a lovely, relaxed pub in a beautiful location, with good food. The beer garden has lovely views across the countryside. I visited with a friend and her toddler. Staff were very pleasant and I am planning to return soon. There is parking with space for approximately fifteen cars.

Lovely pub in the beautiful village of Byworth serving good reasonably priced food and decent cask ale. Great beer garden bordered by fantastic flower beds.
Andrew K — Google review
Great outdoor views and great quality food. Service was excellent. Have a small selection of cask ales some of which weren’t bad. Dessert was particularly scrummy. Small parking lot situated next to it. Would recommend for Sunday roasts.
Tanya S — Google review
Brilliant pub serving excellent food. It’s a simple menu but it’s the attention to detail here that makes the food outstanding. Freshly battered and fried fish with home made crushed peas and crispy chips, home made pies with lovely buttery veg. Couldn’t be a bigger contrast to the subsequent meal we had at a chain pub elsewhere….. It doesn’t take much, just a bit of pride in turning out great food.

Came for lunch with friends a week ago. We had booked but were able to sit wherever we chose, which happened to be outside with the amazing views of the rolling hills. Table service only at the moment, but this was friendly and attentive. The food was fabulous too. Definitely recommend the pies. The only niggle was after they brought the bill nobody came to take payment. We waited a while but in the end just went inside to pay. Not a major issue, but we were on our way to meet people. Would definitely be back if I was in the area!

Lovely well tended garden with lots of picnic tables with parasols. Nice beer, really tasty food - scampi was big and delicious and good crunchy coating and the chips were superb, also excellent Thai curry. Definitely going back here again!

Highly recommend! Carrot + parsnip soup was outstanding, main dishes were hearty and very tasty. Lots of vegetarian options too, definitely try sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Service was great, atmosphere can’t be beat.

Book store
Petworth Bookshop Ltd is a beloved institution in Petworth, offering a delightful experience for book lovers. The store boasts a beautiful collection of books, gifts, cards, and stationery. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant variety on offer and enjoy the thrill of discovering a new book. The children's section is particularly impressive, catering to both enthusiastic readers and those who are yet to find their literary passion.
Lovely bookshop. Wife found a couple of books she found interesting. They also had a small collection of new records (vinyls to those new to record collecting) a few represses, quite a few soundtracks and picture discs. Prices about right on the records. They didn't have the soundtrack I was after - Top Gun Maverick - but I noticed they appear to order in for people, so if you live in the area might be useful for something popular or obscure

I love supporting local businesses, especially little gems like Petworth Bookshop. Yes, Amazon makes it easy and cheaper to buy books online but why contribute towards sending Katy Perry into space when you can keep places like this open? For a small shop, they do curate an interesting array of books. I’ve found some good sci fi titles, cookbooks and travel books here
Yee O — Google review
Lovely independent bookshop, with a good range of interesting titles. I’ve bought many books from here over the years, including hardbacks on art, photography, garden design, foreign travel, and interior décor. They always seem to have something to suit my taste.

Exceptionally good book shop. Petworth village is very picturesque, well worth a walk around and tour of the famous house and amazing artwork within (Van Dyck paintings).

I'm a Photography student and I wanted to find a book on photography rather than searching for information online, and I was passing through Petworth I happened to find this small bookstore so I went in, had a browse and I found this amazing book, it was an easy purchase, the staff were friendly, greeted me and had a friendly smile! I'd come back if I was in the area for sure.

A real find! A delightful independent bookshop, beautifully arranged, with a really interesting selection of books, with kind and wise service. 5 stars!
John V — Google review
We visited Petworth a week ago and stumbled on this bookstore and was amazed at the range of books it had that were not the standard books held by the chain-store book sellers. It was busy and the back of the store had children enjoying themselves looking at all sorts of books. It was a great 'find'. As much as I like and enjoy using what the web has to offer, using a book shop like this one surpasses the passive clicking to pay.
Denise B — Google review
An Aladins cave for book lovers!! It has such a beautiful collection of books, gifts, cards and stationery. Its such a treat to wander around and imerse myself in the vibrant variety on offer! The experience of coming out with a brand new book can't be experienced by endless scrolling and one click purchases. The children's section is fantastic, something for the book enthusiasts as well as those reluctant readers awaiting a book to captivate their imagination. Not to mention the lovely staff who are always on hand to help you find just what you need.

British restaurant
The Welldiggers Arms is a cozy countryside pub with a modern rustic charm, offering 14 comfortable rooms and suites. It's an ideal choice for a peaceful country getaway, as well as a base for outdoor activities or attending nearby events. Situated in the South Downs National Park, it provides easy access to coastal towns like Worthing and Bognor Regis. The on-site restaurant serves hearty pub classics and offers a selection of Butcombe beers.
My son and I stayed over night whilst walking the South Downs way. Wanted to stay in different place on the way. It was great we had a twin room which was comfy but the bathroom had no towel hocks which was slightly strange. The staff in the pub were so lovely and the food was amazing. The breakfast was so great too. So thank you to the chef and staff for running a great place.
Susannah A — Google review
As a last minute booking we took our two dogs to the Welldiggers and had a great stay. The location was ideal for the dogs with public footpaths right next to the pub with some lovely walks towards Petworth. Dogs were definitely catered for at the Welldiggers and staff were very attentive Food and drinks were very good the bar/restaurant and outside space very welcoming. Our room was a standard double which had a superb view over the South Downs, but was let down by being located directly above the kitchens and the extractor fan. Room was a little on the small side and we would look to choose a bigger option when returning, which we will definitely do.
Jonathan W — Google review
Pop in every now a d then when I'm over that way. Lovely view over South downs from the restaurant window. Good selection of beer and spirits. Hopefully get to eat there one day. Menu looks really good. Not heard anything bad about the place. The beer pump handles are a brilliant touch. 4 Candles.
Ian B — Google review
Very welcoming and genuinely dog friendly. Staff team very professional. The food was extremely well prepared and service spot on. Dinner menu a little limited but we enjoyed the dishes we selected. Dining area very pleasant and tables well spaced. Our room was fine with the stunning view over the fields. Not the best bed, a bit lumpy could do with a better topper. All in all loved the atmosphere at The Well Diggers Thank you
Helen T — Google review
Beautiful views from the restaurant, attentive service and an excellent menu. There are vegetarian options that don't just feel like an after thought, and the food has really nice decorative touches. Dogs are welcome. There is parking onside, although this can get a little crowded, in which case the verges on the street opposite can be used
Kath R — Google review
Beautiful setting with amazing views. Polite, smiling staff for whom nothing seemed too much trouble. Delicious food and, for once, did not feel pressured to rush through the courses. Beautifully clean, comfortable room with just the right amount of lived in feeling that you didn’t feel concerned having the dog to staying there with you. Definitely would go again.
Tally C — Google review
Great bed and breakfast offer but ended up in small room with connecting door to next door. Not sound proofed. TV not properly tuned. Only small things in my opinion as everything else was great. Decor is stylish and bedding, tea/coffee/biscuits and toiletries of high quality. The food offerings in the restaurant is excellent, and has the most amazing view of the South Downs.
Marisa S — Google review
One of the best views from a pub table in the land! They have sensibly put an extension on the building, featuring huge windows so that everyone can have a view across the fields to the South Downs. Great food, very relaxed atmosphere. Definitely more about the dining experience than a drinking pub, although there are a couple of small tables by the bar.

The Hungry Guest Cafe is a popular food destination in Petworth, Sussex. They are known for their cheese, fish, meat, and baked goods. The cafe prides itself on using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients from small-scale producers with sustainable and ethical practices. Their bakery offers a variety of artisanal pastries and award-winning brownies. Additionally, they have introduced Easter-themed treats such as simnel slices and mini egg cupcakes to their menu.
Love the warm atmosphere even when it wasn't busy and cold. Had the best soup there - can't remember what type but it was rich and thick and super tasty with a big chunk of fresh bread. Really kind and polite and personalized professional service.

Showing other cafes and restaurants what a proper portion of bacon looks like! A highly stuffed, highly tasty bacon bap with brown sauce. One of life's simple pleasures served freshly cooked with a mighty fine Mocha to drink. Excellent and friendly staff, nice outside covered setting with blankets laid out in case it gets chilly. Not the cheapest, but absolutely the best.
Gareth R — Google review
Great place for brunch and baked goods. Ordered the smoked salmon and avocado toast and it was a very generous portion for the price. What stole the show was the chocolate brownie which was fudgy and rich, I had to buy an extra to take home with me! Friendly staff and lovely relaxed atmosphere
Kinza C — Google review
We used to loved the Hungry Guest but it has sadly gone downhill since it moved to the new site. Our food was so so; perfectly adequate, although the toasted bread seemed very ordinary - unlike the lovely bread you can buy at the shop. However both our coffees were awful; the americano (with requested double shot) was watery & thin & the oat milk cappacinno had the most terrible flavour (sickly sweet)! Very odd....
Marah W — Google review
I have been reading about the HG for a number of years and came over to petworth (1 hour drive) to eat in the cafe. We were so disappointed by a few of the things we experienced. . We were there for brunch - we had 2 sausage baps, they were sadly in dry rolls. The people who ate them both had funny tummy’s / nausea after. I asked for sour dough instead of brioche, and I was given 2 chewy slices of bread. Not sour dough. It was incredibly expensive for what we received. However We went to the bakery and bought sour dough and cakes that were beautiful. This made up for it. It was such a shame on Mother’s Day weekend. May be were unlucky.

Stopped before popping into the gallery. I am coeliac and get very nervous about eating in cafes etc, however, I enquired about the gf toast, and was instantly asked if I was coeliac, I was advised that my snack would be prepared in a designated area away from other food. The guy serving was extremely attentive to my needs. I had gf toast and muggle hubby had a croissant both had hot drinks, would definitely eat here agin.

We really enjoyed our unplanned visit to the Andy Warhol exhibition. Beforehand we had a cup of tea/coffee and a bite to eat in the cafe. The chap running it was really friendly and super attentive. Thanks for making it a pleasant visit.

Really enjoyed my visit to the Leonora Carrington exhibition. The gallery itself was an interesting and intimate space, it felt as though you were walking through someone's home, which I kind of liked. There was a shop attached to the gallery and a cafe at the back. It would have been nice if the cafe was enclosed - I visited on a wet day and didn't fancy sitting in the rain. But overall, a great place to visit. I would visit again if there is another show of interest.

Lovely gallery space, catered around providing visitors with a pleasant experience that avoids overwhelm from too many pictures hung in one space. Nice to move from room to room and around the house. Courtyard for al fresco treats and a nice gift shop.

We stumbled across this gallery in the beautiful and picturesque market town of Petworth a few months after it had opened. Occupying an 18th century townhouse with 12 rooms spread over 7,500 sq. ft. the gallery has staged some impressive and world-class exhibitions with an emphasis on well known artists of the 20th century. We enjoyed the peacefulness of this space and the unusual luxury of seeing world class art without having to queue or stand on tip toes as we so often do in London, Paris or New York. The second time we visited they had changed their policy on dogs and opened up a lovely cafe serving drinks and nibbles. The setting really encourages contemplation, which we appreciated.

I would not recommend this store. Myself and my daughter purchased four chairs and we asked if they had any woodworm. The owner responded no and we proceeded with the purchase on this basis. When we came home we found woodworm holes on all 4 chairs. When my daughter rang the owner she told her that the chairs had been treated for worm and as far as she was concerned they had no woodworm. I would therefore not recommend the shop on this basis :(

St Mary the Virgin Church in Petworth is a captivating historical gem that dates back to Saxon times, with its current structure reflecting 13th and 14th-century architecture. This church not only serves as a place of worship for the local Christian community but also welcomes visitors seeking tranquility or an appreciation of its rich history. The unique red brick bell tower, completed in 1827, adds character to the building.
Historic church dating back to the 13th century, with an unusual appearance courtesy of the later red brick bell tower completed in 1827. Inside, there's the painted Caen stone Dawtrey tomb in the chapel, a fine organ, impressive stained glass windows and a wonderful painted ceiling.

We thought we would take a look around the church as we were visiting Petworth house. We were unaware there was an event on and walked in. We were pounced on by a very rude lady who literally turned us around saying "there's an event on, you can not come in". we apologized and were ushered out and the door closed on us. Guests rave about the delightful seasonal dining options available at their restaurant, particularly praising the fish menu and hearty full English breakfast. The lovely garden, complete with a serene stream, adds to its appeal as a perfect spot for relaxation.
Nice setting for an excellent pub. Room comfortable, clean and spacious. Decor a little dated, but characterful. Excellent staff, food and drinks top rate. Reasonable pricing. Great. Easy to recommend.
David — Google review
Nice pub in a decent location but not in walking distance for much to be fair. Did an ok range of beers and wines and their menu was not too bad. However it is quite pricey, we had 3 sandwiches and 3 drinks and spent nearly £50 which i thought was expensive. It was OK but not somewhere I will be revisiting. We didn't stay there so I can't possibly comment on any other aspect of this pub
Matt L — Google review
We enjoyed a fabulous anniversary lunch here today. They have a great fish menu and a gorgeous garden with stream running through. Staff were very helpful, will definitely be returning. It was generally wheelchair accessible apart from the loos. I managed to use the men’s which was wider although no grab rails but it wouldn’t take much effort to make the toilets accessible. It’s a shame because it is a really accessible pub with good parking. Otherwise l would have given 5 stars.

Great place to stay for visit to Petworth and South Downs area. Rooms are large, clean and really comfortable. Staff made every effort to welcome us and make the stay enjoyable. The full english breakfast was a perfect way to start the day. Dinner in the restaurant was really enjoyable and it was nice to be offered to take my Irish coffee to my room at the end of the night.

Our first visit here for a meal and it was lovely. They get the basics right! Which is such an error in most places. Good service with smiles, water provided at the table as standard and decent portion sizes. It's a proper pub restaurant and the balance is perfect. The food was great quality too. I would thoroughly recommend. Thank you.
Harrie C — Google review
Poor service and inflated prices for basic food. Given its location and how charming the building looks, you'd expect good quality ingredients. Top tip: if you're meeting friends here, put your order in as one group and split the bill at the end because if you order separately, even if you're sitting together, you will get your starters when others are finishing their mains. Caution: only 2 female WC, including one with a lock that doesn't work and just one sink, that's blocked.
