Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.

The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!

Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic

Grand castle. Need 1 hour to go through it. Asked to download the application as tour guide. Could have provided a pamphlet instead of it. View was stunning and worth a one time visit

The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.

One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

If you find yourself near Beynac, make sure to visit Foie Gras Lembert for an unforgettable culinary experience. Nestled at the Sarlat end of town, this charming roadside shop features a delightful upstairs restaurant where guests can indulge in exquisite dishes. The foie gras is nothing short of divine, complemented perfectly by duck breast tournedos and a remarkable sauce that elevates the meal.
We stopped by between lunch & dinner since the restaurants were not open. Well stocked store of local delicacies. Set up a mini picnic of tasty foie gras on toasts at the parking lot barrel tables with a beautiful view of the Beynac castle. Recommended by the tour guide of Gabarres de Beynac as a good manufacturer of Foie gras.

Impromptu stop for dinner. (4 in party) Service and food were excellent. Desserts were amazing. We were made very welcome as soon as we arrived.

We are Spanish travelers who made a stop at this restaurant during our trip. It’s worth mentioning that we arrived a bit late, and while we’re thankful they served us despite that, the service from one of the waitresses a girl with curly hair, was quite unpleasant. The food, however, was very tasty and well-prepared. There were 5 of us, and we ordered 3 dishes to share since the portions looked generous. Still, two of us were charged an extra €5 just for having individual plates to share the food, which we found excessive and we weren’t informed about it beforehand. In short: great food, but the service and some policies could definitely improve.
Judit P — Google review
This place was amazing! We made a one night before reservation for 18 people. Not only were they able to accommodate us, the service felt genuine and family like. We had 8 children and 10 adults that spoke little French, but we felt so welcomed. The food was spectacular! Even the picky eater children were happy with the food and the small play area. If you are looking for the best restaurant in the area, this is it!

We had dinner as a couple. Cassoulet tasted really good. Ribs tasted too smokey and were a little tough unfortunately. Also only 3 ribs (not even a "rack") for the price is not super fair. Dessert was ok, not really special.

(Translated by Google) Excellent restaurant. Not a menu with 40 different dishes, but more than enough tasty dishes. Portions are huge for a very reasonable price. Staff is very friendly. They also speak good English, so communication about food allergies went well. I had the 300 gram sirloin steak. In my opinion it was certainly more than 300 grams. In short, highly recommended. (Original) Uitstekende restaurant. Geen kaart met 40 verschillende gerechten maar ruim voldoende met lekkere gerechten. Porties zijn gigantisch tegenover een hele redelijke prijs. Personeel is zeer vriendelijk. Spreken ook goed Engels waardoor de communicatie over voedsel allergieën ook prima verliep. Ik heb de entrecote gehad van 300 gram. Naar mijn idee was die zeker meer dan 300 gram. Kortom echte aanrader.

Adequate and overpriced. €81 per night for b&b. Empty shower sachets left in shower from last visitor. Shower door didn’t close. Shower head full of lime scale so I had to clean it. Not enough hangers. Only one small drawer in the bedroom. No bedside tables. Had to request additional soap and shampoo as they were not refilled after use. WC wobbled when sat upon. Sink tap full of limescale so I got soaked when using it, had to scratch off the limescale. Breakfast was adequate if a little unadventurous. Coffee was good.

Beautiful situation in the countryside with a beautiiful terrace view and a clean swimming pool. Breakfast was also outstanding with all baked produce produced in-house. !0 homemade jams available plus yughurt and rice pudding (delicious). Restaurant was relayed to me by other guests as also excellent. However rater tired in appearance and decor, bu comfortable. Considerable investment is required to add Air Condidtioning and redecorate the rooms in a mor appropriate style, currents held in the 1970's. Overall a memorable stay.
Keith B — Google review
We recently stayed a week here on a work trip from the UK. Both my colleague and I felt unwelcome in the hotel. Strangely we were not once invited to book a table for dinner at the restaurant. The rooms were VERY basic; I was satisfied with mine but my colleague had to change rooms as the shower did not work. I would not return here out of choice. Looking at other reviews of the hotel, it seems that French customers are generally happy with the place, whereas anyone from abroad leaves lower ratings. This doesn't surprise me at all—there was little attempt for the hotelier to converse with us; certainly our French was better than her English, but we felt our mistakes were smirked at when we made attempts to have conversation.

This walk back into ancient history was fascinating. It has been very well done and if you take the time to read the guide as you go around then you can really visualise how life must have been. Incredible that the farm was lived in until recent times!

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to The Marqueyssac Gardens. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Nestled in the picturesque Perigord region of southern France, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle is a 13th-century medieval fortress that offers a captivating journey into the art of war during the Middle Ages. Overlooking the Dordogne valley, this historical monument boasts a commanding view and houses an impressive collection of weapons, armor, and reconstructed war machines.
Loved this place! Brought our kids (8 & 10), so cool. Lots of steps up. So much history. Great for medieval buffs. We parked in free lot at bottom of the hill & walked up through the small village surrounding the castle.
Sallie H — Google review
An ABSOLUTELY impressive multi faceted immersive experience!! Not to be missed! The whole castle from room to room offered museum quality examples of weapons armour. A few areas had repeating audiovisual stories about construction of siege equipment, and how to make armour. One area was a theatre. There was a live blacksmith , a person who explained and fired a trebuchet. Another explained weapons use and gave kids some basic sword training using props. Probably the best EVER historic site I’ve been to !! Well worth the money and drive to see!!
Jay F — Google review
Very beautiful castle, especially recommended for a visit with children! In the various exhibition rooms, in addition to the elements on display, there were also small Playmobil exhibitions, so that the children could also enjoy the visit! The castle itself is beautiful, really well preserved and offers phenomenal views of the valley and river in the area. At the end of the visit (small signs help you to navigate everything, even without a guide) you will find a small tower room for children with books about castles, knights and the like, as well as Playmobil toys, where the children can play and read! Really amazing, the kids loved it! The children also loved the costumes that were available in an exhibition room. You could choose something from a range of medieval clothing and then sit on a throne provided and take your photo (free of charge, but you take the photos yourself, of course). A wonderful idea! I would definitely recommend a visit for families, but without a stroller, as you can leave one in a designated area in front of the castle. The only thing I didn't like so much, and that's not the castle's fault, was that in winter only one restaurant was open, the one right next to the castle, and unfortunately they weren't good and a bit expensive for what you get. Otherwise, highly recommended!
India M — Google review
A rewarding view and experience for a slightly hard uphill hike. Can drive up, but part of the experience is the walk up! The restaurants around the top are really terrible so I'd suggest either bringing a picnic or going back down to eat.

It is not the normal tourist restaurant under the castle, but an excellent restaurant, with traditional dishes and an excellent house wine. Have lunch here before going up to the fortress.
Agostino B — Google review
We don't normally go to restaurants near tourist attractions but the location in this case was beautiful and we were running out of time to have a meal in the normal lunch period of the day. What a pleasant surprise!! The setting is gorgeous with a view of the chateau. The service was very prompt and the burgers that we ordered were delicious... and the wickedly indulgent ice cream plate that we shared! Recommended.
Bryan T — Google review
The food was burned or overcooked, and prepared poorly (we had the center and top of a tomato in our burger). It wasn’t disgusting or unsanitary or anything truly bad, just disappointing and bland. The service was great and the place is pretty, but the person I was eating with got pooed on by a bird while eating, and another bird touched his hair, because there was food left out for them beside the table. I wouldn’t leave a review if this place didn’t have 4.5/5 stars and if it wasn’t so expensive, but at this price point I feel like I may have fallen pray to a tourist trap. All the other meals we had in the past week of Perigord gastronomy have been phenomenal. This restaurant was the only big mistake.

A magnificent location with wonderful views, an incredible sculpted garden and plenty to explore. We took an afternoon to get our and enjoy some nature after a few days of taking in the well known historical sites in the area. It was a fine weather day, and we very much enjoyed a leisurely afternoon in these grounds. The views are far reaching, the paths calming and very well maintained, and called off with a nice restaurant just above the entrance or, along the patna ways, a creperie. The chateau in the grounds was an unexpected highlight, with some interesting history and several displays about the link between the owner and the illustrator of the Michelin Man. A must see for all

A wonderful part of the Dordogne. There is plenty of parking and the approach to the manor house gives you an idea of the creativity of the gardeners who shape the box hedges into fantastic arrangements. The walk along the ridge has quite a few pathways and also some fun things for kids. It is a long walk and so many vistas to explore. The restaurant is good but pricey. €6.50 for a finger of lemon juice in a glass and a jug of water. It’s was refreshing though.

This was so much fun! Kids loved the adventure of the paths lined with hedges too. Felt like something out of a story book. This was pram accessible the whole way too. Some parts easier than others. We had ice cream and coffee at the tea house and it was delicious.

Fabulous gardens. Great views of the countryside. Plenty of exercise, bring water bottles. My ten year old daughter loved it, treated it like an adventure to discover hidden areas, and wants to go back next year. Once you've admired the topiary go into the chateau to watch a video about the gardners' work.

Very beautiful, calm place. A bit pricy though - 12,9 per person. But one can spend there couple of hours or more.
Ieva — Google review
We went anticipating a 1-2 hour visit. My partner and children (4 and 8) ended up spending most of the day there while I went to deal with an issue with our car that took much longer than expected. No one complained because there was so much to see and do! The only tips: the rock climbing wall for children is only in the AM, the via ferrata requires fully closed shoes (eg. Not Keens), and children requiring two accompanying adults.

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, Au Chalet Gourmand offers a delightful dining experience that keeps guests coming back for more. Despite some mixed experiences with service during previous visits, this restaurant has consistently impressed with its exceptional cuisine. Diners rave about the exquisite flavors and presentation of dishes like truite tartar and tournedos de boeuf, which showcase a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and spicy notes.
I dined here with my grandparents a couple days ago. I’ve been once before last year but I don’t like to write reviews after one visit. The first time was exceptional, and the second time probed to be even better. The food is just amazing! I like to try things that I wouldn’t usually order and they were extremely tasty. The truite tartar was one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. Sweet, salty and slightly spicy. The tournedos de boeuf was sublime, so tender and juicy. And of course the potatoes on the side were perfect. Live the garlic and nutty taste. The tiramisu for desert was the best tiramisu I’ve ever had and I’ve had authentic Italian Tiramisu. The service was brilliant. We were served by 2 kind and friendly servers that kept checking in on us to see if everything was up to OUR standards. I applaud this, I’ve not been to many restaurants with this kind of service. Thank you to those to servers, they made the experience that little bit better. All in all, I would highly recommend this restaurant, its one of the best I’ve been to. Great Service, Exceptional Food, Good Wine Selection. 10/10

This is was rated 4.1 when we went. Far too low for this restaurant and much better than other places with a higher rating in the area. Had an excellent bottle of wine and a really decent quality meal, especially given the price. Was very busy and staff were still very friendly. Would revisit.

Wow, we haven't had such great food in a restaurant for such a long time! Friendly waitresses and chef, spotlessly clean and very nice set up. The Coq au vin is one of the best things in France. We will definitely be going to this restaurant again...... thoroughly recommend and fantastic value!

We had a delicious 3 course menu here tonight, it all tasted and looked superb. All the staff were so friendly and kind. Highly recommend it.

If you think about the perfect tourist trap in a nice setting.. that is the one! Silly prices 10e a beer!! perfect rip off. Food is mediocre, pâté with no taste in Dordogne! A joke really. Service is ok but manager at check out is unfriendly. The meat displayed on the cabinet by the till will suffice to make you vomit! So if you would like to enjoy quality food at a resannable prices go else where..
Franck T — Google review
The food is pretty ok, but the service is very poor, even a bit unfriendly. Two grumpy waitresses don't bother to welcome you, don't know how to serve with a smile and they throw the drinks and food on the table without any care. If you don't ask for bread and water, you don't get it, let alone trying to even get some attention to ask for it! Plenty of other options in the area, so better skip this place, who's best asset is the nice view on the castle (if you are lucky enough to sit on the outside of the terras).

We went early on a quiet, slightly rainy night in June. The food is tapas-like choices of freshly prepared, locally sourced dishes. We had two each, all very fresh, healthy and delicious. Nice, friendly welcome and service and an eclectic and ambient interior.

Great place, very friendly and nice outside seating area. Good food, also good vegetarian options. The beers they make themselves are a must to try.

Great food, great service (thank you Quentin) and excellent atmosphere. Without a doubt one of the most enjoyable meals we have had in our two weeks in France. The lamb dish was amazing as far as I am concerned. The selection of wines that Quentin chose on our behalf.. both very nice. Tops marks guys and thank you for the experience.. you made memories for us that we will take back to Australia. Good luck for the future.

Absolutely a perfect place to go: -the welcome was super friendly, and all three waitresess/waiters where very observant and kind. -wine and food very tastefull, and at that price, a true bargain. -mood and setting... one word describes it perfectly: unpretensious. An atmosphere of joy, and lots of local people dropping in, greeting each other The food are varieted, so something for everybody. Remember to order sidedishes for the meat courses. Château des Milandes is a magnificent 15th-century castle located in the heart of the Black Perigord on the south bank of the Dordogne. Once home to entertainer Josephine Baker, it now features displays tracing her remarkable life. The castle offers visitors an opportunity to explore its history and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area. Additionally, there are restaurants nearby where guests can savor local cuisine after visiting this historic landmark.
This Chateau is really worth a visit. It is attractive architecturally. It is made especially attractive by the well currated story of Josephine Bakers' life there, who was quite an amazing woman. It is set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has a great bistro. Basically, it's just a great place to visit.
Phil J — Google review
So loved this beautiful home of Josephine Baker. So much to see. Half hour bird of prey show in the grounds, included in the price. The grounds and house were Spectacular. It was one of my favourite things during my 9 day holiday in France.
Theresa B — Google review
A great place to visit. We left inspired by life of Josephine Baker (audio tour in English and thoughtfully arranged) and the beautiful surroundings. Not just a great visit for adults, but also for youngsters. The falconry display was an unexpected highlight of our visit and was enjoyed by all.

Great venue for families and couples. The new cinema telling the story of Josephine Baker is a great addition. The lunch in the restaurant was very reasonable

absolutely lovely experience! the tour was great with audio options in several languages. not too crowded and you could spend as much time in each room as you wanted. very detailed history and descriptions of each room. the gardens were beautiful and so lovely to room. even stayed for the bird show which was so cool, they did a great job showing the birds around to every corner where people were sitting. could easily spend the whole day there, so much to see!!
Abby R — Google review
Get a glimpse of what Josephine Baker was as a person and where she lived. Lots of personal letters, clothing to see to get a imagine of life back in the 30,40's and so on. Not only the chateau is worth the visit but also the garden. It's worth the visit on its own. Beautifully landscapes garden, downside is the owls and falcons being in, what looks to me a small cage. Feels like that shouldn't be a thing in 2025. You do get to see them close by. You probably wouldn't see them in the wild
Job G — Google review
Loved every second.. a fascinating visit. I could hear Josephine Baker’s singing as we wandered .. The interior has been beautifully curated with authentic touches. The family kitchen was very special 🥰.. An amazing story about a fabulous lady! The ‘Birds of Prey’ exhibition is a bonus!
Leonie H — Google review
We started with the aviary show, which was a great spectacle. In addition to owls and Hawks they have a bald eagle, which is know to the French as the emblem of Harley Davidson. Next, the chateau was a great tribute to Josephine baker, with many exhibits featuring parts of her life story. Finally the brasserie is great, good confit of duck and some creative and tasty burgers.

Camping la Plage *** offers a range of services from April to September, including a swimming pool, bread delivery, grocery store, restaurant, and washing machine. The facilities are well-maintained and in excellent condition. Visitors appreciate the clean showers with hot water and good pressure. The campsite's location by the river provides a beautiful and relaxing setting for both guests and their pets. Additionally, there are plenty of local attractions to explore nearby.
I spent a week here on a beatifully maintained campsite right beside the river with lovely walks along the banks is both directions. Just me and the dog. Unfortunately I had a seriously bad back during my stay and absolutely could not move. The patron called the SAMU, spoke to their doctor who sent a prescription to the closest open pharmacy (it was a bank holiday). He the collected the meds and came by the camper every hour until I was back on my feet. So I recommend the site and the staff with five stars, and thank them so much. Tom 32

This a really good campsite. Arrival at the site is into a large off road parking area for checkin which is something you don't get at many sites. We had a wonderful good sized pitch (twin axle caravan) backing onto the river. Showers and loos all good. Good bar with interesting local beers and an excellent communal great value meal once in the week. Great area with plenty to do and good walks both ways on the river. Canoe hire on the local beach with bus transfer upstream and collection downstream. Would definitely return.

A lovely family-run site with friendly/helpful staff who work incredibly hard to keep the site well-maintained. Spotless. Shower block is old-fashioned but really clean. Pool and relaxers superb. La Roque Gageac can be walked into, it’s so close. The Belvedere from Les Jardins de Marqueyssac (well worth a visit) is high above the site, with incredible views of the river, site, village and surrounding area.

Really nice family campsite with happy multilingual hosts, good facilities and right next to the river. If you're lucky, the hot air balloons will float right past around 7am...

Beautiful clean campsite by the Loire. Lovely pool. Saumur a short drive away. Fresh bread and breakfast rolls can be ordered. Recommended.
Pamela P — Google review
Amazing campsite, beautiful views of the river and to the side a picturesque hayfield with views of Castle Nord on the hills. The amenities were clean ,though you need your own toilet roll and soap. The pool is lovely, not too crowded and clean.Access to the site is very easy and pretty villages are easily accessible on foot or bike on either side of the campsite. You can also order pizza, snacks and bread from reception. My only criticism is it's a tad clique with regulars returning on an annual basis ,but that really isn't a big deal. The hired air balloons go over regularly too, some quite low which is exciting. All round a top site with gorgeous views and friendly wildlife.I would definitely return and can see why others frequently do.
