The Archaeological Park of Paestum is a captivating complex featuring ancient temples dedicated to Hera, Athena, and Neptune, along with an amphitheater and a museum. This archaeological area was once the heart of the city, housing not only renowned temples but also the agora, the city's founding tomb, streets, baths, fountains, and meeting places for both Greeks and Romans. The Roman amphitheater is uniquely divided by Highway 18.
The park and grounds are in much better condition than I anticipated. We bought a guided tour in English language by an archeologist so we could much better understand the site. I highly recommend this! In about two hours she walked us around the site, pointing out interesting points and facts about what was Greek and what was Roman. Afterwards she walked us through the museum across the street (which is a fantastic museum!) and told us more facts. Since your ticket is good for a couple days, you’re free to them roam around the park and see anything else you may be interested in. Major bonus, they block the street in front of the park to car traffic so it’s a much safer and relaxed stroll around the area. You can easily grab a coffee or buffalo burger to refuel.

Magnificent well preserved Greek temples. There's an app called Paestum & Velia that explains the ancient site. Definitely download it before you visit as it helps you understand the ruins. The ticket was €15 for adults but under 18 was free. We loved being able to explore the area and absorb the history. We went on a weekday late in the afternoon so it was not too busy. Definitely worth a visit!

I love ancient sites, I've been lucky enough to see plenty of these throughout the countries around the Med. But this Paestum one, it's really something! The park is so beautiful with majestic trees everywhere, its roman ruins and, obviously, those breathtaking ancient greek temples of Hera and Athena. If you're a history enthusiast, you can't miss that one!
Cedric M — Google review
Fantastic place to visit. Walkable distances and you can take as much time as u want. The museum which is included in the ticket price holds a lot of interesting items. I wished I had visited the museum first before entering the site. I could have imagined things more better with this background info, but this might be a personal preference.
Lola P — Google review
Beautifully maintained. I’d highly recommend going here if you’re into architecture and archaeology. Fascinating. Good food stops nearby too. Great parking within steps of the museum. 3 euro lot.
Rebecca W — Google review
Hard to put into words. If you’re a history lover, Paestum is a must. The ancient Greek temples are breathtaking, and walking through the ruins feels like stepping back in time. It’s peaceful, fascinating, and well worth the visit. You should also visit the nearby Museum as part of the tour, it’s fascinating.

We loved this stop, came here on an excursion from our cruise ship that docked in Salerno. Great ruins, fascinating. Greek & Roman ruins. Hot in the sun, bring water, not much shade while walking the ruins. Wayside signs explained what you were looking at in English.

Gole del Calore, located in a nature reserve, is a limestone gorge renowned for its picturesque riverside trails and swimming spots. The area offers canoe rentals and pedalo excursions during the summer months, providing a unique perspective of the unspoiled natural surroundings. The gorges are home to diverse wildlife such as otters, brown trout, kingfishers, and salamanders. Visitors can embark on hiking and trekking adventures along the pathways while admiring the stunning river-created landscape.
Such a beautiful place! Some parts of the hike were quite tricky but it is worth it. The river is so stunning, there are cute lizards everywhere and once you made it to the top you have a beautiful sight. If you have the chance to visit this place: give it a try!
Anika — Google review
Beautiful place. The hiking trail had more stairs than we expected, but was easy for kids to navigate. The water was cold, clear, and beautiful, with wonderful views along the canyon. We had a great time climbing over rocks and exploring near the small dam. Unfortunately the nearby restaurants and canoe rental place were closed without any further information. There were bathrooms but no water available.

Great hiking place with an ice cold river to jump into after walking around. The hiking path is very clear in the beginning but when you want to do the "small" (we took 3,5h for 10km) tour that starts at the restaurant, goes along the river and around the hill back to the restaurant, it gets a little confusing on the way back so a hiking app or map is advised! Canoeing is also possible for 5€ per person but only in the afternoon starting at 2:30pm and depending on the season and therefore the depth of the water you can't go through the whole river. The restaurant wasn't open when we were there but a small kiosk shop with snacks and packed ice cream.

Torre di Velia is a prominent feature within the archaeological site of Elea-Velia, protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The ruins include the acropolis, agora, Hellenistic baths, and Roman baths. The tower offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding area from its well-preserved remains. (Translated by Google) What a wonderful holiday! ❤️ As soon as we arrived, we immediately felt at home: the staff is exceptionally kind, always ready to help with a smile. The entertainment team was great, fun but never intrusive, just how we like it. The resort is nestled in a spectacular olive grove, a peaceful haven that lets you breathe in nature and relaxation. The cabins are clean and welcoming, perhaps a little dated in their furnishings, but this is overshadowed by the overall atmosphere. The nearby beach is well-equipped with amenities and crystal-clear water! And then... the food! 🤩 A riot of flavors, with countless options every day, including first courses, second courses, and side dishes, always plentiful and delicious. Saturday night dinner was unforgettable, as were the themed evenings: the one with mozzarella and buffalo ricotta won us over, truly superb! In short: a holiday that left us smiling and wanting to return. Because it's true... "it's better there"! 🌿✨ (Original) Che vacanza meravigliosa! 🌿✨

(Translated by Google) We spent a pleasant week at Villaggio Elea between July and August, fully enjoying the beauty of the location and the warm welcome we received. The resort is nestled in a splendid natural setting, well-maintained, and with direct access to a clean, transparent sea. The beach is well-equipped, and the lifeguards were truly professional, promptly managing even challenging days. The family atmosphere is certainly one of the resort's strong points: you feel at home from day one. The first few days were enlivened by highly popular themed evenings (Neapolitan, Cilento) and pleasant culinary surprises with unique food corners that added a touch of variety. Even during dinner, entertainment was present with music, dancing, and characters for the little ones. However, from mid-week onward, there was a noticeable decline in the entertainment offering: the themed evenings stopped, the food corners disappeared, and even the entertainment during meals was absent. Mickey Mouse, long-awaited by the children, disappeared without explanation. The entertainment staff is numerous, but evening shows are often led by just the head entertainer and his assistant, leaving the feeling that much more could be done with the available resources. There are also some points that could be improved on the catering front: pizza, for example, was sometimes served cold because dozens of pizzas were being churned out at the same time, ending up in boxes with no clear destination. Nothing serious, but these are aspects that, with a little more attention, could make a difference. In conclusion, the Elea Village remains a solid facility, ideal for families and those seeking relaxation, sea views, and a friendly atmosphere. With a little more consistency in the activity schedule and greater attention to detail in the services, it could truly offer an excellent experience throughout the week, not just in the first few days.

Velia is a seaside resort with 6 km of sandy beaches and a mild climate, making it an excellent destination for travelers. The town center offers various amenities such as shops, supermarkets, and dining options. Nearby Velia holds cultural significance due to its school of philosophy Eleatics and well-preserved ancient Greek arched town gate, Porta Rosa.
Actually in this park you have more to imagine than to see, but for its importance for the development of occidental thought and for some uniquities I highly reccomend it. Here you can see the only one Greek Arch discovered in the world. Velia/Elia gave birth to Parmenide and Zenone , two of the most important philosopher of the ancient world whose thought had big influence on Socrates. Parmenide was the first to think that only with rationality one can understand world, and with his intelligence he understood that god need to be, one , with no parts, with no beginning and end, everywere. Zenone, his follower founded the "ad absurdum" way of thinking, of top importance to solve matematical and philosopical problems. On top there is a medieval tower with beautiful seaview. Prepare to climb and descend, so better to have gym shoes and a bottle of fresh water. This archaeological park is still mostly uncovered: only 10% of the area is carved out.

What an interesting place! I would love to start by informing you that it's definitely not worth buying the souvenirs at the start of the park. Moving on I'd say you've gotta be fit if you're thinking about visiting this site or else it will probably not be worth the effort. What I'm trying to tell you is that it's honestly just a bunch of rocks here and there and next to being athletic you're also gonna need a lot and I mean A LOT of imagination. To sum everything up: would I consider myself satisfied? Yes. Would I redo it? Absolutely not

Visited as part of a combined ticket with Paestum (visited the previous day). Good information boards throughout the site. Helpful staff at visitor centre. Fresh water fountains dotted around the site can be be used to refill own bottle; was incredibly hot so this was a welcome bonus. Combined with visit to Paestum, Velia gives a good insight into how people lived up to 3,000 years ago.

Large area to walk around to see the ruins, we downloaded the app for the guided tour but this didn't work as no volume ( we are not tech savvy say may have been us). The information boards are in Italian & English so no problem understanding what the buildings were. Enjoyed visit & highly recommended. We had the best time there! ..Beautiful hike to get there, passing hills, crossing dried up rivers, enjoying beautiful sceneries and landscapes.. and of course, dulcis in fundo, that gorgeous beach.. ..we were lucky enough to catch a sunny day on Jan 30th.. and the rest was magic!

Extremely crowded, very little space at the beach. Boats bring new people every minute, impossible to relax. A lot of boats, water smells and tastes like chemicals. Nature ruined by people. Probably the worst beach experience I've ever had.

(Translated by Google) We walked the Infreschi walk following the directions in the online reviews. We started from the Lentiscelle beach. I don't recommend parking at the small cemetery as one review indicated because it is prohibited and you risk a fine. We set off on foot and reached Cala Bianca in 1 hour and 20 minutes, walking calmly and with 4 children, the youngest of which is 10 years old. In my opinion, the times found in various reviews are not reliable... it doesn't take half an hour or 40 minutes... it's a pretty long but doable walk. I recommend mountain trail shoes, we had hiking shoes. You must have water with you. The beach is stony. Beautiful water. The only flaw: the boats, which are supposed to be forbidden to come to this bay and instead there were at least 5 motorboats!

Giardino della Minerva is a centuries-old botanical garden located in the historic center of Salerno. Once used by students of the Salerno Medical School, it offers a tranquil escape with terraces, rare plant species, and scenic views of the Gulf of Salerno. Visitors can explore aromatic herbs, spices from around the world, and exotic plants while enjoying unique infusions at the Tisaneria.
Absolutely stunning. The Garden itself but also the views of Salerno were incredible. The way up is, well, hell. There’s an elevator who takes most of the uphill climbing away but the bridge vom the elevator to solid ground is metallic bars you can look through. If that’s something that gives you anxiety, be prepared.
Michelle R — Google review
The Minerva Gardens – home to the first medical university in Europe, which is certainly an important achievement. But is it really worth visiting? That’s debatable. It feels more like a global plant museum, where anyone can spot species from their own homeland. As for the four-tiered plant terraces – are they worth the time? Hard to say. I’ll leave that for everyone to decide personally.

Beautiful historical gardens reaching back in history to the early use of medicinal herbs. Dating back to the 12th century. First School of medicine using plants and herbs for treatment of ailments. Fascinating information. Beautiful terraced gardens, with a gorgeous view of Salerno and the sea.

This is an amazing learning space constructed within the city walls a complex design of gravity fed itrigation keeps all the plants watered and healthy. There is an abundance of diversity and meaning in this space and well worth a visit. Like all places in Salerno, be prepared to climb a few steps.

Beautiful, serene, peaceful. The plants are nice and so is the view. Come right before dusk.

The Garden of Minerva is a must-visit if you’re in Salerno. It’s a beautiful historical spot with a rich past and stunning views over the city and the sea. The atmosphere is peaceful, perfect for a relaxing walk while learning about the history behind the garden. The entry fee is fair, and considering the experience, it’s great value for money. Highly recommended for anyone who loves nature, history, or simply breathtaking views!

Beautiful place. They have a huge exhibition of all the medicinal plants in the world. You can scan a square code next to each to find it's history and uses. The design and the flow of the rain water is beyond belief. On top of that the views from each level and the top terrace is well worth the 6 Euros.

Warning: if you don’t have at least a little bit of interest in science and botany, don’t come. If you want just to take pictures of yourself or the view, please don’t come. The place is magical. Just the idea of what these men were doing so long ago. All the plants and how they were trying to figure out their properties and possibilities as medicine - it blows my mind. There is also a nice shop where you can get teas, wines, and a really beautiful view if you are lucky enough to get the best seat in the place.

Ristorante Porta Rosa is located at the foot of the archaeological site of Velia, overlooking the Elea-Velia tower. The Criscuolo family has been managing Hotel Porta Rosa for over thirty years and welcomes both hotel guests and external diners to their restaurant. The ambiance is a blend of warmth and sophistication. The menu offers a variety of delicious Italian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. While the wine selection may be limited, it complements the dining experience well.

Real shame. Started off so well, very nice starters, but then my wife’s cuttlefish arrived very quickly and we sat and waited an age for our pizzas. When people who arrived after us got their pizzas before us, the waiter told us “you just have to wait”. When it was clear the pizzas had been forgotten, still no apology, claimed it was my fault for ordering fish as well as pizza. When I spoke to the chef to say we no longer wanted the pizzas as we’d waited over an hour already, he made a hand gesture and said “ciao”. Could have been a lovely evening, ruined by rude staff who can’t admit to their simple mistake. There are much better places in Marina di Ascea, you can afford to miss this one if you are not keen on insults. At least the owner took the pizzas off the bill, even if she stopped short of an apology. What a shame, evening spoiled…

While the food occasionally hints at celestial quality, the service at this restaurant is anything but divine. Staff is rude and arrogant. By God’s grace, you may eat here, but don’t expect the staff to enhance your experience. Consider this a place for a lesson in patience rather than a memorable meal. Not a place to return to.

(Translated by Google) We went to this beach in person 20 days before our vacation to ask if there was availability for an umbrella for a certain period. They explained to us that the situation wasn't easy for them (which I understand). They also said there wouldn't be any problems, the space would be available; we just had to contact them a few days in advance. We wrote a few days before and they told us that the entire period wasn't available and that three days would be vacant. That's fine. They gave us the price (which wasn't the one we'd discussed, but that's fine; it was a busy day, she must have been confused). We tried to negotiate the price a bit and were told that they weren't a stall and that they don't hold auctions. That's fine, we apologize and accept, and we send the deposit. On our first day under the umbrella, the weather was practically unbearable, and the lady kindly advised us not to go down and that she would let us make up for it. This gesture was appreciated, and we promptly repaid her by eating (deliciously) on the beach despite having a house just a few meters away and a supermarket right next door. The surprise is that, if you get a period of uncertain weather (and I don't mean bad weather), the lines for umbrellas are halved and the party begins, something we obviously hadn't been told about (just like the shower, which isn't included in the umbrella rental; it's €15, including a €5 deposit for a card—well, that's fine, too). Basically, if it weren't for the staff at the bar, the spotlessly clean open kitchen, and the empathetic and professional lifeguards, this review would have one star. From the moment the lines are halved, everyone RIGHTFULLY wants the service they paid for, the place they paid for. Since it was frequented by a very relaxed, adult, and well-mannered clientele, there were no major problems for 10 days. The beach was self-managed, except that on the last day, an argument broke out between the beachgoers and the owner (who pretended to be the manager) came down and asked my pregnant partner and I to move the umbrella we'd paid for because she thought we wouldn't be going on the last day (despite the fact that it was expensive) and that we hadn't told them the days before that we'd be using it until the last day. And then, last but not least, she said, "Go to the back row because I'm in charge here and I make decisions." We didn't start any arguments; we simply pointed out that we were under the umbrella assigned to us. They're lucky because they're in an area with few alternatives: a tiny beach with umbrellas glued together. Your lounger is practically glued to the one next to it, maybe 20-30cm apart at most, so anyone in that area is almost forced to use it. The alternative would be the public beach. There were four of us (my partner, my parents, and I), but every day we set up our umbrellas on the public beach (since we'd brought them for the open-air days), so as not to crowd together even more (also because it's prohibited by the rules). Since it's very likely that this will be denied, I'm attaching a photo, one of which shows how the water practically rises, forcing us to remove the umbrellas (which really bothers me, and in fact we were silent for the entire duration of the holiday, and despite this, we were told who's in charge and who's not). Kindness is probably mistaken for foolishness.

She wrote down my number telling me that if a place was free she would call me. Obviously this did not happen, but I knew for sure that in the following days, when the places were free, she would rent them! I found it as a lack of seriousness. Fortunately, on the free beach it was nice and there is certainly more distance between the occupants than at this beach. Beautiful stalactite cave. If you drive between airports in rome or naples and calabria, then this is a nice midpoint place to rest 1 hour. If you can time it with the guided tours. What is special about this cave is you enter the cave by boat. At first we was a bit disappointed, the first half was not beautiful but then the cave became amazing and the last half was full of Stalactites and stalagmites. We like this cave.

Only one problem, the maintenance of some protections and some "revitalization" of the signs in some sections of the route (I didn't follow it all, only six km), but it is likely that some delays are also due to the long period of rains this year. (Original) Tutto bellissimo.

Day 4

Visit Vicolo della Neve
For day 4, stop by Vicolo della Neve in the morning to start off your day. Then, if time permits, visit Sentiero degli innamorati as well. If you end up going to all 2, that should fill up about 8 hours.

Restaurant
Italian restaurant
This is a typical traditional Italian pizzeria with arches, fake frescoes and artwork on the walls. The menu is very authentic and features dishes such as pasta and pizza. The service was excellent and the wine was great.
We tried this restaurant for authentic southern food of Salerno! We loved it the food was delicious 😋 Pasta with potato 10/10 Broccoli with potato 10/10 Baked fish 10/10 parmigiana 10/10 I recommend going to this restaurant of you want to have something special.

I don’t know why I was expecting something much nicer, not that the food wasn’t nice, it was, but portions were small to my taste. It’s an historical place and I recommend you go for the daily menu, as it is the freshest option and they change it on a daily basis. Famous for the pasta e fagioli ( beans pasta). Best cakes from Pantaleone, ancient pastry place in the old town.

Absolutely fantastic. They were fully booked on Saturday night but the front desk person was so friendly and helpful and got us a table for the last seating. The food was spectacular as was the service. Their pizza, roast lamb chops, squid with peas dishes were particularly memorable. Even though we were tourists and most of their clientele were local Italians they treated us so well, even checking in several times to ensure we were happy with the food etc. As we left we made reservations for the next night — the first time we have ever done that when travelling!

One of our favorite restaurants in Salerno. It’s better than a 4.2 rating. Octopus salad, stuffed artichokes fantastic. The spiced chicken was great. I like ordering chicken at restaurants to test their skill because it can often be underwhelming and it showed that they have someone in the kitchen who knows what he is doing! Cant wait to go back.

Food and drinks were great. The staff were fun and helpful. This was our first time in Italy. The staff were excited to show my young grandson how to eat his spaghetti! We loved Salerno and this restaurant.

Nice atmosphere and probably one of the few serving food before 8pm in Salerno. Good selection of local cucina dishes and pizzas. Also the wines weren't bad. Anyway we had problems with food. The starters were cold and also the baccalá, I really don't understand why? Unless the food wasn't fresh!

After having a horrendous experience at a restaurant around the corner and walking out - we visited this one as suggested by our accommodation host. Everything about the evening was wonderful. Lovely food and wine accompanied by great service and ambiance. Thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Salerno.

Hiking Trails
Explore the enchanting Sentiero degli Innamorati, also known as the Path of the Lovers, offering breathtaking views and a lovely hiking experience. The trail connects Marina di Ascea with the old town above and features well-marked paths with handrails and steps. With stunning landscapes and various gradients, it spans about 2km and can be accessed from both the beach near the cliff or from the road. While not overly difficult, it offers a rewarding uphill journey surrounded by nature.
It's a tough climb but there are lots of shady spots, lots of panoramic views and lots of steps to help climb up and down but I wouldn't go with young kids - it's too difficult for them.
Roberta D — Google review
Lots of stairs. Wear at least sneakers/closed toe. Great view. Out and back took about 1.4 hrs. Some rail was broken as were floor boards. A bit overgrown in spots so I suggest long pants.
Nicole G — Google review
A nice hike that takes around 1 hour back and forth, a bit more if you take the unofficial road to the fort in the end. Note that this is NOT A LOOP TRAIL which means you climb all the way up, go down to the river, cross a bridge and start climbing again, only to go down to the final spot which is the view point. It would have made more sense to find a way down from there to the beach but instead you have to do alllll the way back to the starting point, which is a bit annoying. Also note that the first half of the hike is in the shade but the rest is mostly exposed to the sun so come prepared. Enjoy 😊

The view is very nice. It takes 1 hour and half back and forward in total. There are a lot of stars :)

Really good hike but make sure to bring a lot of water..
Praboth M — Google review
Lovely path that takes about 30 minutes each way depending on your pace. A good amount of it is shaded but there is also a lot in the sun so recommended to do earlier in the morning or evening. The views are stunning and it is a good amount of exercise for a short path. There are many stairs that go both up and down and it is quite rocky in areas. Not for everyone but it is doable for most guven the length of the path.

(Translated by Google) Today I went to the Lovers' Path. I think it should be called the "Wellness Path" because it's full of steps and greenery. You can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the sea breeze, as well as the variety of Mediterranean flora and the excellent viewpoints. Sneakers and a bottle of water are recommended. The entire trail can be completed in an hour and a half, including stops at the viewpoints. It's highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful trail surrounded by nature. The arrival platform offers a breathtaking view. The trail is very doable; ignore the negative reviews people ALWAYS complain about. I did it with my wife, who is not at all athletic. The total outward and return journey took us 1 hour and 40 minutes, and we stopped several times. My advice, if you're not used to the effort, is to avoid the hottest hours and periods. *For those involved in management/maintenance: I would add a couple of signs along the trail indicating where you've come and gone.

Bahía Beach Club is a delightful destination that offers an unforgettable experience, especially at the bar where Elia and his girlfriend shine with their exceptional service. Elia's expertise has transformed the bar into a vibrant hub, even helping staff like Rita grow in their cocktail-making skills. The atmosphere is inviting, making it perfect for enjoying delicious food—especially the pizza, which guests rave about as being incredibly tasty.

(Translated by Google) I'm giving it five stars solely because of the experience at the bar. Elia and his girlfriend are top notch. He clearly has experience; he ran the bar for a whole season, even organizing parties, because from what I understand, it was thanks to him that Bahia changed its face. I've seen all the progress at the bar, especially Rita, who at first couldn't lift bottles, but with the guy's work, she slowly started making cocktails during the evenings. I got the impression that the owner didn't care about the bar but only about the dining room. I'd like to tell him that the bar also has its own revenue and, if managed properly, it can exceed the dining room's takings. I've eaten at the restaurant a couple of times, and since the new feature this year was the kitchen, I wanted to try it, and I was really disappointed. There was too much oil on the dishes that arrived. I recommend removing the oil from the chef. Luckily, there was a pizzeria, which, like every year, never disappoints; they're excellent. The other problem was that during the evening, they brought us the wrong dishes, and they didn't even know where to put them. There was a huge confusion in the dining room, and the wrong orders. I ask the owners to be more present in the dining room, but above all, to also focus on the bar, because there are no guys like Elia with his grit. It's clear he's obsessed with money and customer satisfaction. I hope we see him again next year. Good luck, Elia. (Original) metto cinque stelle solo grazie all’esperienza al bar. Buona fortuna Elia.
