Saint-Maurice-Navacelles in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Saint-Maurice-Navacelles, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Saint-Maurice-Navacelles is a gateway to the dramatic Cirque de Navacelles, a vast limestone canyon carved by the Vis River and recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed cultural landscape (Causses and Cévennes). Visitors come for striking viewpoints over the cirque, the river gorge, and surrounding causses plateaus. The area offers well-marked walking paths, scenic roads, and traditional stone hamlets that showcase the rural architecture of inland Languedoc. Nearby waterfalls and old mill sites along the Vis add to its appeal for nature lovers and photographers.
With favorites like Les Moulins de la Foux, Crêperie du Mas Guilhou, and Auberge de la Cascade, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Auberge de la Cascade and Crêperie du Mas Guilhou so you can get the best taste of Saint-Maurice-Navacelles while you’re here. Cirque de Navacelles is a stunning natural wonder located in the south of France. The deep limestone canyon offers breathtaking views from observation decks at nearby Blandas & Baume-Auriole. Visitors can take a scenic car ride through ever-changing landscapes and be rewarded with splendid views from the top of the plateau down to the bottom of the canyon. A winding road leads to a well-maintained small village above the falls, where visitors can enjoy cooling off in the water.
Wonderful visit to an amazing place. The drive down into the canyon was pretty hairy but there are lovely river walks, a waterfall and a restaurant. Carpark is payable until end of November. There is a metre near the river. Dont forget to stop at the Belvdere at the top to take in the breathtaking view. Good place for a picnic, or there is a restaurant with stunning views. I loved this place. Didnt really hve sufficient time to explore properly and intend to return for an ovetnight stop nearby. Stunningly beautiful place on a sunny autumn day.

The gorge presents stunning views as you navigate the road through it - several hairpin bends along the way. The roads are narrow and care is needed but there plenty of passing places. At the base of the valley is a wonderful oasis where with the right footwear you can undertake well marked walks, admire the waterfalls or just have a drink at a lovely cafe bar located there. Car parking requires payment and the number of spaces is limited however.

A truly breathtaking panorama, step back though geological time. The Viz river has cut through the limestone to form a gorge that is timeless. The fairy tale hamlet at the base of the gorge is an exciting you'll never forget.
Paul F — Google review
Incredible place to visit, outstanding scenery accommodated with Crystal clear water to swim in with a waterfall crashing into an open lake to swim in. Lovely restaurant and visitors centre. Overall a wonderful place to explore for a day.

A wonderful place to visit, absolutely magical ✨️

Beautiful views from above, photos don’t do it justice. Nice village at the bottom with some free parking. Did a 10km hike around the area with lovely waterfalls at the far end.
Allan M — Google review
Beautiful area for walks and a fabulous, turquoise blue river with waterfalls! There is also a free and quite regular bus service for walkers, along with a few places to eat and good parking. Highly recommend!
Jonty P — Google review
Amazing 4 hour hike! Beautiful scenery!!! Will definitely come back!!! It's long, but pretty easy! Be sure to have a good pair of hiking shoes on! OH, the last part of trail is pretty high up, so if you're afraid of heights it's a little scarry :)

Hiking area
Les Moulins de la Foux is a captivating destination that offers an enchanting hiking experience amidst the stunning landscapes of the Cirque de Navacelles and the gorges of La Vis. This relatively easy trail leads adventurers to the fascinating ruins of historic water mills, where visitors can delve into their intriguing history and explore parts of an underground screw system that remains largely uncharted.
Wow, just wow! We didn't know what to expect and were so surprised to see this place. Amazing! A great walk from Navacelles.
Klaas S — Google review
Wonderful hike with gorgeous views. Easy hike if you want to get to the mill but can be extended all the way to the bottom of the gorge. If you are going to go all the way down I would suggest going back the way you came once you finish. I made the mistake to walk back along the D130 which was maybe not my greatest idea, seeing as it was 35 degrees and there was no shade for two hours. Highly recommended and kid friendly!
Igor P — Google review
After a 1.1km walk along the hill you end up at an old mill with some water running through it. At the rear you can access the water's edge which is a beautiful place to sit for a while. Funnily enough not many people ventured there but totally worth it. Free entrance, no facilities but easy to reach and a very nice site to visit.
Ruud G — Google review
An amazing find, well hidden in the gorge de la Vis. Waterfalls, clear blue (and super cold) water are very refreshing in the summer but be careful, July and August are quite crowded, May, June, September and September are much more relaxed months if you want to really feel the place.
Alexandre N — Google review
Great place to visit with a small hiking road at low difficulty level. The way down is very relaxing, quite flat and just a few tricky steps, but most people should be able to do it. The way back is all the way up but still not too challenging. The windmill is exciting to explore, your walk will definitely be paid off. There is a free parking slow aside the road for 8-10 cars.

Nestled in the stunning landscape of the Circus of Navacelles, the Maison du Grand Site offers an incredible vantage point to soak in breathtaking views from the south side. With ample parking available, it's a convenient stop for visitors. The adjacent facility is home to friendly farm animals like chickens, geese, goats, sheep, and pigs that you can interact with—just be cautious around those feisty geese!
One of the magnificent hikes we had completed in our beautiful region. Be prepared that if you descend the Chemin du Facteur the climb back up will be the most challenging part of the hike. A must do and see!

Magnificent treking experience going down (or up) the 296 meters trail on the steep mountain side offers an unique and breathtaking view! Just go for it! (suitable treking shoes highly recommended).

Very nice, quit and not too touristic location to visit. Also possible to do a good hike (be aware pretty dangerous hike) so definitely not recommend for children also. Top view is amazing. U don't need to do a hike to see the top view. Also reachable by car. Not reachable by big cars/caravans etc.

What a fantastic natural place. A small village in this geological transformation of the mountains is incredible what Mother Nature has created for us. In middle of mountains this was an amazing experience. Views from the top were unforgettable. Great experience for bike rides too.
Kujdesi R — Google review
Great spot to view the area from the south side, with plenty of parking. The facility adjacent to the viewpoint has chickens, geese, goats, sheep and pigs you can pet (watch out for the geese, though! :-), and though the restaurant and other shops were closed when we visited, it looks like a great place to have a bite to eat and drink while looking over the edge to the village below.
Glen C — Google review
Fabulous views (though the Blandes side is even better!). But for me the variety and abundance of butterflies was amazing!!! Though I should say September was a little out of the main tourist season, so perhaps that helped.

Nestled in a picturesque valley, Auberge de la Cascade offers a charming blend of history and comfort with its simple yet inviting rooms. Guests can indulge in a complimentary breakfast while soaking in stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The on-site restaurant, El Rancho, is renowned for its generous portions and homemade dishes crafted from high-quality local ingredients. Specializing in exceptional meats like Black Angus from family farms, it promises an unforgettable dining experience.
(Translated by Google) Without a doubt, one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in! (I didn't experience the rooms.) The servers were extremely polite, attentive, and responsive. Starter: Navacelloise salad + Main course: pork chop with pepper sauce + Dessert: lemon meringue verrine. The price is more than reasonable, considering the quality of each dish. You can feel the local, homemade flavor. Thank you for this wonderful experience. (Original) Sans doute l'un des meilleurs restaurant dans lequel j'ai mangé ! (Translated by Google) Lunch on the terrace in August. Despite the crowds, we were able to enjoy a decent meal as soon as a table became available. The setting is pleasant and the terrace pleasant. The service was relatively fast given the crowds. The food is good, but you can tell the setting is paying off in the menu. The prices remain affordable for this type of establishment, but the main drawback is the quantity, especially in the salads (starters and main course). There are very few side dishes, but a lot of salad for the price compared to the other dishes on offer.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful location and shaded terrace, very friendly staff. However, the dishes were average. Hard and tasteless melon as a starter, main course was generous and good with vegetables but disappointing with the meat and chocolate mousse was rather bland. We had a good time, however, I still recommend it.

The Crêperie du Mas Guilhou is a fantastic restaurant that offers both Breton pancakes and regular pancakes. They have a delightful terrace where customers can enjoy drinks or lunch in the sunshine. The staff are very friendly and the taste of their food is excellent, whether it be the pancakes or the traditional Breton galettes. Their beer selection is also impressive, and they come highly recommended for their chestnut kir as well.
Excellent lunch after walk around Cirque de Navacelles.

Nice place to stop for lunch after visiting Navacelle. It has two terraces and some steep chairs to reach the upper one. The creperie also serves other food like great omelets or salads. A menu (omelette, green salad and a crepe to your choosing) will cost you €13,50.
Frank V — Google review
staff cannot cope with the high workload. I have to wait 1 hour for my food. My father has already eaten his food and I am still waiting
Samuel V — Google review
For us this place seemed more like a tourist trap. The only affordable options (sandwich) were of course sold out ("no more bread" at 3pm) so the only thing left to eat was the "Tartine" = two slices of toasted bread with different stuff on it and a small side salad for crazy 12€! Since this place was the only option in town that had sth. to eat, my suggestion: Take some food with you to Cirque de Navacelle. Otherwise you will pay 12€ for two slices of bread...

(Translated by Google) We came to this crêperie for a drink and a meal, and we had a wonderful time. Honestly, nothing to complain about; the food is very good, made with quality local produce. The waitress is very pleasant, cheerful, and available despite all the customers who ask her. The two terraces are very clean and have a natural ambiance, half shade, half sun. Everything is perfect; we will be back and recommend it. All the best to you, and see you soon.
