Crossroads Mall

Shopping mall
Crossroads Mall in Waterloo, Iowa is conveniently located near major roads and attractions like the Isle of Capri Hotel and Casino and Lost Island Waterpark. The mall offers a variety of shops including Bath & Body Works. While some visitors reminisce about its past popularity, others express disappointment over store closures. However, there are still attractions like an arcade, a train, and a play area for kids. Additionally, the mall features a clean movie theater with polite staff.
In middle/high school this was the spot to hang after school and weekends! Sadly that's not the case anymore....stores have left and nothing is taking their place! They have a sweet arcade in there now, a train and pretty nice play area for the kids! You can still get what you came for from.the selection of stores, just used to be a lot better!

I’m DUMBFOUNDED as to what happened to this mall! It looks like the “zombie apocalypse” happened lol. The only GOOD thing left there is the pizza place inside. Colorado had amazing malls, maybe people are freaked out still because of stupid covid around here? 🤷‍♀️
Honest R — Google review
Maybe two places open, the pizza place and an exercise place. It was colder inside the mall than outside. It’s pretty a place to walk for laps. They need more stores open.
Axe J — Google review
There's absolutely nothing here anymore besides two places in the food court. Nice place to walk around.
Raychel R — Google review
Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and was saddened by the condition of the mall. They have no anchor stores...Younkers, Sears, Gordmans, Dillard's are all empty. (At Home is currently using the bottom level of the old Younkers) location. The corridors are near empty. Both upper and lower Dillard's corridors have no open retail. The mall directory has not been updated for years still showing stores that have closed. While this was once a smaller mall you can see the potential it once had. Not sure how much longer it will able to survive...
Daniel W — Google review
This mall is derelict! There’s 4 businesses left inside the place. The mall has some very cool aesthetics, it’s unfortunate how the mall is basically empty. You’ll think a town like Waterloo/ Cedar Falls can support a mall? Also I would be careful when taking pictures because they get pretty upset by it. Since I didn’t get enough pictures I came back the next day, an hour before closing and no one was around. I got the pictures I needed.
Slacking P — Google review
There no stores left here. The Chinese restaurant and pizza place are very good and still worth visiting. It's sad to see it empty, it used to be so lively.
Matou P — Google review
For the most part the mall has been abandoned. The building has been maintained good. If the weather is bad and I want to walk. Often go there to walk inside. At this time it's not good for much else

Water park
Water & Amusement Parks
Amusement park
Lost Island Waterpark & Adventure Golf & Go-Karts is a family-owned establishment in Waterloo, offering a wide range of activities for all ages. The park features numerous water slides and pools, as well as an arcade, pool hall, go-kart track, mini-golf course, and concessions. With its tropical island theme complete with palm trees and island music, the park provides seasonal fun from early June to Labor Day.
For an up and coming amusement park, it was very nice! It's clean and very kid friendly, plenty to do even for the really little kids. The 3D ride was the best 3D ride I have been on anywhere else. There are a few critiques that would be beneficial for the park to reach its full potential: the theme park is well done but seems to be lacking a bit. Rides can be completed in less than 2 hours depending how many times one ride is utilized, the water park needs directional signs to find the paths since a couple paths were behind a fencing area and covered by another ride, it was unclear at first where to find tubes and mats until you walk around the park and find them yourself. Staff is slightly lackluster, but the staff was mainly teenagers. The number of lifeguards was impressive and was always alert and walking around each water area. I didn't see a single staff member distracted by technology. Go-karts are outside of the water park, and we had to leave the water park to utilize this as well as mini golf. If buying tickets online for go-karts, there needs to be a cohesive communication as the staff running the carts didn't know if we signed waivers or not as there isn't proof given to the customer that it was completed. The staff had to radio to the person inside the building if it was completed. Mini golf was very fun, and it was split, so you can do 18 holes on one side and 18 holes on the other that was more challenging. The setups were very creative and visually appealing. This park has a lot of potential to do very well in the next few years! We will be visiting again.
Rachel — Google review
Amazing water park, plenty of slides and the wave pool along with the lazy river took up most of my afternoon. The only downside is the price of food and alcohol. While I understand higher prices because of the lower entrance fee, but 30 dollars for what is effectively a small gas station pizza is excessive. Other than that the park is phenomenal!!
Jacob T — Google review
Great water park. I rented a cabana and it was totally worth it. With the cabana you can order food and the staff assigned to your cabana will get it and drinks for you so no lines. We had kids 8year to 13years with us, they kept busy the entire time.
Tami P — Google review
We went this past Saturday and we had a blast. It's not a huge park but you get your days worth. We had so much fun we didn't even take pictures. We were living in the moment and it was so fun. The food is pricey but it's pricey at every water park or amusement park. We had pizza and it was delicious. Every staff member we encountered was so polite and friendly. We will definitely be coming back every year.
Ruby L — Google review
This is a great water park. There are cabanas to rent which I would recommend, the service and food were good, especially for a water park. The lazy river, wave pool and kid play areas were great. There were mermaid experiences throughout the day and TONS of water slides. The pool tubes were great and they had a ton of them which was nice. The bathrooms were very, very slippery but overall kept fairly decent just very wet in general with low fan circulation. We've been to a lot of water parks and this is definitely a great one to visit !!! Pretty reasonable for prices but make sure to bring some type of footwear. The cement gets EXTREMELY hot and is not watered down throughout the day. We would come here again and definitely recommend.
Paige C — Google review
We all had a blast at Lost Island 🏝. Summer vibes are the best out here 👌 🙌 💯 🫶. We are living and loving ya'll 💚💚💚💚💚
Thelma Z — Google review
Lifeguards were very alert and did a great job scanning. The park has changed quite a bit since I last visited. Last time I visited there wasn't the wave pool, the kid section was much larger, and I remember there was a swim up adult bar. I also remember the water being significantly warmer! Is it not heated now or is there mechanical problems? If so, this would have been nice to know, especially on a cooler day.
Ashley A — Google review
This place is the best water park I've ever been too. The infrastructure seemed solid, the slides were in great condition and there was a proper variety of thrills. The bathrooms were less nasty than most water park bathrooms I've seen, most of the mess was likely made that day so overall I'm happy with the bathrooms. The lifeguards were pleasant and confident in their jobs but were strict enough to keep people safe. The water was warm enough to be comfortable and refreshing but not cold enough to feel bad. There was only minimal leakage from slides, the wood in the towers looked (and felt) really solid, the lights worked like they were supposed too, and none of the hardware looked very rusty, even on the surface.

Young Arena is a versatile sports facility in Waterloo, offering a range of activities for visitors. It serves as the home venue for the Waterloo Black Hawks, a prominent team in the United States Hockey League. The arena has a seating capacity of 3,000 and provides an exciting environment to watch hockey games featuring talented young players. In addition to hockey events, Young Arena also offers public skating sessions and features amenities such as a running track.
Amazing arena to watch the ice hockey game. Pretty small in capacity but the noise can be deafening. Loved the atmosphere and the passion shown by the fans. Will recommend this to anyone who has never been or seen an ice hockey game previously. The tickets were also cheap to afford it.
Dheepak G — Google review
I have been attending Black Hawks Hockey games for years (since late 1990's!). Lots of fun events for fans to participate in as well as concession and drink specials. Plenty of seating options. Stadium seats can be a snug fit for a bigger person, I prefer the sections with bench style seats .
Amy R — Google review
For what it’s worth the Waterloo Blackhawks usually have a fun team to watch. Young Arena is a decent place to watch some good hockey. Good sight lines for the most part. Besides good hockey and decent sight lines I don’t need much. The concessions are nothing noteworthy and prices are up there just like everything else. The crowd is a good mix of all walks of life as well as many die hards and their cowbells and their teenagers with cowbells and their new borns with cowbells…… Ps…..public skating and walking are offered during the crummy months also. Enjoy!

Cannot believe we went so long without participating in this immersive atmosphere! So much fun for families and people of ALL ages. We will be back again and again.

Restaurant
Applebee's Grill + Bar is a full-service chain restaurant that offers hearty American cuisine in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Customers can enjoy delicious meals, such as bone-in wings, from their diverse menu. The establishment provides prompt service, with waitstaff quickly seating guests and attending to their needs. The food is served promptly and at the right temperature, with generous portions that satisfy appetites. Additionally, the prices are reasonable for the quality of food offered.
We had great service from Quelyn! He was so friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I have a smell /taste disorder currently which means a lot of foods I can't taste properly, especially meat. I was able to order a few side dishes instead. Salad was perfect. Mac n cheese was good, coleslaw had some herb I didn't like but that's a personal preference. I was surprised though I was able to taste my daughter's hamburger! Couldn't believe it. Made my day.

I had a great cheeseburger and fries, served fast and friendly. This place is looking a little tough, outside and in could use some cleaning and or updates, but I would come gor food and service!
Matt R — Google review
Excellent service - friendly face upon entering and seated immediately, drinks served quickly with a smile, food delivered with humor and kindness, and attention throughout to bring water with an alcoholic beverage, notice ketchup was running low and replace (before we even noticed), supply dipping sauce with no issue, etc. Food was tasty and everything was seasoned well. Solid atmosphere, quiet and warm. We will be back!

The staffed here is great! Very accommodating. We did the 2 for $25. Didn't take any pictures. I had the grilled chicken oriental salad. It was excellent. We had my 91 yr old mom with us. She eats like a bird (not very much) and our maitred was the most gracious I've every had at helping her with the menu options. A good suggestion is to have a sheet for older seniors to occupy there senses while waiting. I grabbed a kids menu and she loved the word search game. Thank you so much for the great service. We'll go here again.

Hadn't been to this Applebee's in quite a while. Tonight we popped in & had Q as our waiter. He was fantastic!! So attentive, friendly, helpful, and just an all around great waiter. He even remembered my family members drink order from the last time she was there..very impressive! Keep up the good work!!
Melissa K — Google review
Honestly, it seemed relatively clean and fine. However, I do not recommend going here late. It's a sketchy part of town. And they need to train their waiters better. Our guy had sweat pants on and was mildly unprofessional to me and my friend. I don't plan to return anytime soon.

Japanese restaurant
The overall experience at Tokyo Bay Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar was exceptional. The menu offered a delightful selection of sushi, including The Manhattan which featured delectable combinations of salmon and tuna. Another standout was the Cadillac roll, known for its spiciness and abundance of flavor brought by shrimp tempura, jalapeno, and avocado. The variety of sauces provided added an extra level of deliciousness to the dishes. Additionally, crab rangoons with sweet and sour sauce were enjoyed.
If you enjoy really good fresh sushi I would highly recommend this place. The service was top notch and the sushi just had me drooling for more. Pricing was about average for the sushi but the quality of the ingredients was outstanding!!! Photo of what I haven't eaten yet since I needed a breather...this was SO YUMMY!!!
Renee W — Google review
Ordered takeout paid over $80 for my order to have some of it just get thrown into the takeout boxes. This used to be one of the best sushi places in town never would have problems with their orders now it seems as every time I order my food doesn’t even look appealing anymore. Sucks that it’s came to this looking forward to taking my business else where.
Eva A — Google review
We skipped the hibachi experience and ordered a salmon and chicken combo with added swordfish that came with miso, salad, veggies, rice, and noodles. The miso was perfect temp and quality with a sprinkling of mushroom and green onion. The salad was fresh topped with fried onion strings and ginger dressing. Although the salmon was very tasty, the swordfish tasted very fishy. We didn't eat it and weren't charged for it. The chicken was hit and miss. The veggies were perfect. The fried rice was tasty, but the rice was definitely overcooked, and the noodles were noodles. What I most enjoyed were the crab rangoon and soft shell crab rolls we also ordered. To our tasty surprise, the rangoon rolls were the hit. The restaurant was well staffed, and they were well groomed and uniformed. Service was attentive and genuinely courteous. The restaurant was well maintained inside and out. It is a large, spacious, and well ventilated place with very high ceilings and plenty of seating. The front with table seating for ordering and the back for the hibachi experience. The bathroom had a pleasant smell. It's much better than most. Unfortunately for me, bathrooms are never missed. I started in on the rolls before pics 😁
Shonda M — Google review
Good sushi and stunning atmosphere! Really enjoyed their ginger salad as well as the hibachi. I got the Hawaiian Roll & Cucumber Wrap!
Angela P — Google review
The atmosphere is very nice. I love the hibachi, it's on point. I don't care for the noodles, I prefer the thicker ones. The veggie sushi is alright, but I've had better. Overall I'd definitely recommend. Update: I've gotten sick twice at this restaurant and my friend got sick once as well. I will not be eating there anymore.
Crystal R — Google review
Food and service is always great. Over priced though.

The sushi is delicious and the prices are fair. I would love for the waiters to explain the menu a bit more and recommend the best dishes, as that would make the experience even better. A little more customer service would make a big difference.

Pizza restaurant
Basal Pizza is a laid-back spot offering a variety of pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and starters along with a selection of craft beers and cocktails. Visitors have raved about the delicious Detroit-style pizza and the generous portion sizes that can easily feed two people. The Neapolitan-style pizzas are also highly praised for their taste and quality ingredients, comparable to popular chain Punch Pizza. Customers appreciate the friendly service and reasonable prices at this local gem in Waterloo.
Fantastic little pizza place. Very nice laid back atmosphere. We tried one of each crust. The Neapolitan was large and great for our kid, we shared a Detroit supreme that was fantastic, and the gluten-free eater in our family was very pleased with her mushroom pie. Simple menu, and easy ordering. Gluten-free is not listed on the menu but if you call or ask in person they can make it.
Jason S — Google review
Absolutely phenomenal! I am officially obsessed with Basal Pizza! Loved the Detroit style pizza - the fresh basil, sauce and crust were all superb. The dessert pizza with perfectly ripe strawberries was just what I needed. I can’t wait to go back and eat the rest of menu! Great vibes and great food.
Jessica B — Google review
As locals to the area I do not know why it took us so long to visit! We had heard excellent things and wanted to bring a foreign change student from Italy because she was missing home. We ordered three Neapolitan pizzas: Margerhita, Bianco, and Yukon, as well as the Detroit pepperoni. Our Italian friend said the Neapolitan was “just like home.” It made her smile from ear to ear and send pictures home to her family. She showed us how to eat it - folded in half - no utensils! The Detroit was excellent too. The service model was unique - order from the app and pay online, then everything is delivered to your table. Super simple but takes away a lot of “hunting” for your server to order or pay. The food was served hot and quickly to our table. Super kind folks and simple easy-going vibe. The decor was simple and fun - beautiful art and incredible live plants all around the restaurant. A true hidden gem in the Cedar Valley and we will be back - OFTEN!

Good brick oven pizza. Only a few selections of pizza to choose from out of deep dish or hand tossed. Hand tossed is 10 inches. Deep dish feeds 2 people. Very limited bar - tall boys, regular vodka, rail whiskey, rail rum, water, canned soda. $30 for a Busch light tall boy, a Moscow mule, and a 10 inch sausage pizza.
Ashly S — Google review
The environment here is very modern and trendy. The food is fresh and delicious. The service was also good. I will definitely be back considering how close it is to my work :) I do not like the transition towards scanning the QR code and ordering that way but I understand. Overall, still delicious. Big fan of the Detroit styles.
Ervin S — Google review
Basil Pizza was a nice addition to our pizza offerings in the area. The location might scare some patrons away but they probably prefer Pizza Hut or Little Caesar’s to grace their Iowa Corn Fed pallets. Basil hasn’t changed much over the years which is both good and bad. Some menu favorites have disappeared. The beer selection is ok but lacks creativity. Their sourdough pizza creations remain delicious and now includes their take on Detroit style which I’ll have to try again but it was pretty good the first time. If you find yourself in downtown Loo’ Basil Pizza is worth a stop. Enjoy!
D D — Google review
We LOVE this place. Every time we visit Iowa, this is one of the stops, if not the first! The guys are always so friendly. The atmosphere is chill. And the pizzas are one to none! Also… don’t leave without getting the Nutella pizza, but please be warned that you will be HOOKED

Starbucks, a coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, is renowned for its distinctive roasts, light refreshments, and provision of WiFi. The employees are generally very pleasant. While there may be a few older female staff members who can sometimes come across as abrupt, the overall service is exceptional. The drinks they offer are exceptional too. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that drive-through beverages at Starbucks come with drink stoppers. This particular Starbucks location exudes a delightful atmosphere that engenders affection.
Clean store, usually very busy during certain peak times but mobile ordering has almost never given me an issue as I know they are slammed so many mornings. Some of the workers even remember your name and greet you when you walk in and always have great recommendations. The drive thru isn't in the best location as it does wind out to the street sometimes but that's no fault of their own. There's additional Starbucks at Hy Vee, Barnes & Noble, and Target nearby if someone absolutely needs their fix and the line is too long!
Sierra M — Google review
Poor experience today, I purchased almost $30 worth of food and drinks and I had 2 pastry items that were hard as rocks. The almond croissant was baked to a crisp, burnt bottom and hard to even bite into and then a banana bread which has been probably sitting out getting dried out for days now since they were closed Sun and Mon. There goes $6+ Dollars down the drain.
Rad1 — Google review
I really love this Starbucks! The staff were friendly and patient—even with someone ordering for the first time. I didn’t feel pressured at all while figuring out my order. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the beverages were enjoyable. The only small issue was that my drink still tasted a bit too sweet, even though I asked for no syrup and no sugar. Still, everything else was so positive that I’m happy to give a full 5 stars!

Great coffee, but older woman at the window I've noticed is never polite to me or helps me grab anything! Today she watched as I had struggled to grab the card reader to pay, and didn't try to push it towards me at all! I work in customer service as well and try to be a polite as possible to anyone that I meet. Great coffee though. Will be back, but disappointed at this last time.

If I’m paying 7$ for a drink I better see a smile at the window lmao the older lady is not nice this has been the second time I’ve come and I will not be back anymore she has no smile what so ever. Just rude.

This is a very convenient location when you’re out shopping in the Waterloo area. I stopped there today around 1:30 PM and ordered a tall, hot cinnamon dolce latte and a slice of their banana walnut loaf. My drink was perfect, and the banana bread was very tasty. I had requested for the bread to be heated up, but it wasn’t very warm when I got it. There were no cars in the parking lot and no other vehicles in line at the drive-through , so I was a little disappointed with how long it took to give me my drink, but I understand that they probably move slower when there isn’t a rush. Thank you for my afternoon pick me up!
