Nature & Parks
Park
Pikes Peak State Park in Iowa boasts stunning natural landmarks and offers hiking and biking trails, as well as full-service campgrounds. The park is considered one of the best in the state due to its unparalleled views of the Mississippi River. Visitors can enjoy walking to Bridal Veil Falls through bluffs and valleys on well-maintained trails that are moderately challenging. Campers can also take advantage of clean and quiet campgrounds.
Nice and spacious campground. Great roads through the campground but some sites need a bit of leveling. We were in pull through site 32 and it was very easy in/out and level for a larger RV. The hiking and biking trails were well kept. We were able to bike all the way to town and back about 5 miles each way. We do have fat tire e-bikes and there were just a couple slow spots for this older lady! Was a fun ride and not too strenuous with a little assist. Views of Mississippi were beautiful.

Beautiful views! I only had time for the scenic overlook near the parking lot and the short trail to the waterfall. I would absolutely visit again if I'm in the area! The overlook was stroller friendly/dog friendly/ and wheelchair friendly! The trail to the waterfall has many steps. Not suitable for those with difficulty walking. There were many picnic areas and a large parking area. Clean but older plumbed bathroom near concession stand. Would recommend!
Amy L — Google review
Absolutely stunning! This park has one of the most unique and beautiful views in Iowa. The trail system is well organized and easy to navigate. Bridal Veil falls is easy to get to and super pretty! The campsite #20 was nice in that it backed up to the woods, has electric, shade, fire pit and picnic table. Water nearby and an outhouse. The Camp Host was extremely helpful. We are new RVers with an older motor home that wouldn’t start and we couldn’t figure it out. He came to give us a jump and ended up finding a battery connection issue that he cleaned up enough to get us rolling, so we could head home. Wish we could have stayed long and we will be back!

As full time rvers, we know good & bad campgrounds ans parks. This isn't just a huge state park, its just about right. The sites were large enough to fit my jeep, our 4 door truck with 8 foot bed, and our grand design momentum 380th (triple axel) and we stayed in site 15. There are pit toilets right behind out site we didnt need but were available. The bath house and flushing toilet restrooms were already closed for the season and signs said they closed october 19th. There are a hand full of walking trails that we took with our dog. The park is pet friendly but no dog park. Some site were pretty level and some were not at all. We did not come during peak season so we picked our spot upon arrival as everyone pays online with a qr code available at the front to make it simple. Come in tax and all at $25, pretty amazing price for power hookups. Some sites have power, some have power & water. Our site 15 had power and a water pipe across the road if needed. There is a dump site at the campground, as well. Great park at a great price with beautiful views!

Always love camping here, great scenes, trails and campground. The campground has really been upgraded, lots more concrete not sure how I feel about that yet, but the campground is very nice and the shower rooms are good. The trails and scenes are always good. They did remove the children's playground up by the camp store, not sure why they did that, but overall very good experience.
Carla P — Google review
I highly recommend staying at this state park. Very well maintained facilities, camp hosts are friendly, views of the Mississippi are vast, hiking trails are clearly marked, a short drive to Effigy National Monument and just a few minutes from the bars, restaurants and winery.
Brandi K — Google review
Great views of the Mississippi. Great overlooks. Good hiking. Bridal veil falls was a bit underwhelming but a nice hike. Definitely go if you like great views, walks and exploring the area.
Jeremy S — Google review
We enjoy Pikes Peak. It's a nice drive through town to get to the point and the views are wonderful. They have clean bathrooms and a gift store that sells drinks on a hot day. I finally visited in late fall. It's equally beautiful and colorful. But they do close the nice bathrooms later in the season.

What an excellent local history museum! We stopped in the afternoon on a Saturday, and Leigh was so knowledgeable and helpful and kind. We learned about the mind-boggling sand art by Andrew Clemens, as well as the history of McGregor, and we even bought our own sand art making kits there to try for ourselves later. Wonderful experience, and it helped to make our weekend trip to McGregor fun and memorable. Thank you Leigh!

This is a labor of love — a fascinating collection of artifacts documenting mostly the recent history (ie: since arrival of white people). Well worth a visit.

I went there in June 2017 and I there and it was a very nice little museum and that has a lot of history and it packs a punch.

The store offers an extensive array of unique items, ranging from jewelry to photography, catering to the diverse tastes of all visitors. With its recent remodeling, the shop boasts a fresh new look that adds to its appeal.

This place is amazing. Local artists, incredible customer service, and completely unexpected in this corner of Iowa. I grew up in this area and seeing this exist and thrive makes me happy. I bought an original piece and I usually only buy prints, but I would have been sad if I hadn't ever seen it again.

Wife and I stopped by with 3 kids on the way through McGregor! Didn’t know if the kids would like it, or if the shop would like kids in there. The shop was amazing and had something for everyone! The staff (didn’t catch her name) was incredible with the kids and kept them extremely engaged. Definitely worth the stop!

I love when a gallery showcases local artists. There’s a variety of different mediums and styles here so there’s something for everyone. Support local art! 🖤

Really awesome artwork for sale here. Beautiful creations, my favorite being the paintings on leaves! When I first saw them, I thought someone had just painted a scene inside of an outline of a leaf that they painted. However, when I looked closer and saw it was a beautiful painting on a leaf, I was blown away!! They were too expensive for us to buy, but if they were around $20-40, I would have for sure bought the eagle one.

During a stop in McGregor, we visited The Left Bank and Gallery on Main St. We were pleased with the quality and variety of local artisan work and the community outreach classes to adults and children. We purchased gift items for others (and ourselves) and hope to have specialty items made to order. Staff are welcoming and willing to go the extra mile. It’s worth taking a few extra moments to check out the original bank safe.

This has to be my favourite gallery and shop in the region! It has a stunning range of original arts and crafts by talented artisans all living within about 100 miles of McGregor. There is truly something for everyone in this beautifully stocked shop / gallery, and the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about the art and the artists. If you're in the area, I would highly recommending visiting The Left Bank!

Mexican restaurant
Latinos Mexican Restaurant Bar is a must-visit spot for delicious Mexican cuisine. The salsa and guacamole are particularly outstanding, reminiscent of authentic flavors from the Mexican border. The fajitas are sizzling and perfectly seasoned, served with the best corn tortillas ever tasted. The friendly service accommodates special requests with no fuss, making for a pleasant dining experience. With good prices and generous portions that include rice and beans, this restaurant is definitely worth a detour off Highway 18.
Food was delicious. Made our fussy adjustments with no problem. Dinners included rice and beans. Chips and salsa served before meal. Friendly service. Good prices.

Ate here in 2020 and loved it. Delicious food and great service. So made dode trip tonight on way home to Wisconsin. Absolutely worth the short detour off hwy 18. The best salsa and guacamole I've had since living near Mexican border in the late 1980s. Fajitas were sizzling hot and perfectly seasoned...served with best corn tortillas EVER !

Above average lunch price. Below average food and service. Bland, no taste food was served on a paper plate. (My food was barely lukewarm and was sent back only to re appear with cheese on it that hadn't been there the first time out) Poor excuse for Mexican food and small portions. Smelly sewer odor lingered through the bar eating area. Had to ask for our bill 3 times even though they were not busy. Will never go back.
Deb — Google review
Loved the food!! Amazing outdoor seating. Fast service. We ordered the fish tacos and the 3 taco meal. Nothing to complain about. The tacos were amazing. The rice was perfect. And I can honestly say the refried beans were so good I inhaled them. And I never eat the beans. If you have not been here it’s a must. If you had a bad experience you need to try again
Jacob T — Google review
I would have never expected a wonderful Mexican restaurant in this small river town. We stopped for lunch and the pork fajitas were delish! My wife had some tacos with what she said was the best guacamole she has ever had. Our fantastic waitress said it was fresh made with every order. even the salsa with the chips was very special.
Dan M — Google review
I have enjoyed better food in jail. No joke. This is NOT authentic Mexican food. It's is Americanized Hispanic food. But whatever, it's taste is dull and the portion was ridiculously small. I waited so long, I considered eating leftovers on the floor. I would rather eat frozen stuffed peppers at home. Good luck!! Oh... Service. Gentleman that seated us was wonderful, waitress was lazy.
Steven B — Google review
Horrible waitress. Asked us what we ordered for drinks 3 times and still brought us the wrong drinks. Food was served on paper plates and to go boxes with plastic utensils. Food was ok but way overpriced! We will not be returning. We had 4 adults and 3 kids. We were not asked how we were splitting the bill and she came to our table with one receipt and asked “who’s paying?” And then she stood over our shoulder as we were paying the bill as if she’s trying to guilt us into tipping her. She did not get a tip. By far the WORST experience I’ve had in any restaurant. Extremely rude and careless waitress.

Gourmet grocery store
Shopping
By The Spoonful is a charming little shop that offers an array of fantastic food-related products, including specialty coffee drinks. The friendly staff is accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. They have a great selection of local items such as fresh sandwiches, meats, spices, cheese, beer, sweets, and more. In addition to being a small grocery store with plenty of meat and flavored meats, they also serve fresh coffee and specialty coffee drinks.
By the Spoonful is such a hidden gem! The place is super cute and cozy, and the drinks are really fun and creative. The boba and popping jellies are seriously amazing—they make every sip way more fun. What really makes this place stand out is all the unique stuff they have. The drinks are great, but they also carry a ton of cool local, homemade items you don’t usually see anywhere else. It’s the kind of spot where you just want to look around, try new things, and hang out for a while. Definitely worth checking out!
Zebrine Z — Google review
Very nice store with a big variety of gourmet package food. Unfortunately, they do not display the price on the items. This prevented from making a purchase.
Jeff M — Google review
Great spot to check out while in the McGregor area. There are lots of goodies to take home or grab a drink or snack (grab and go sandwiches as well) while out on your adventures. I was interested in trying their boba milk tea drinks. It was around noon and I already had my fill of coffee so I opted for a fruity option - kiwi popping boba and mango jellies in almond milk. It was delicious. I’ll have to remember for my next fruity drink that the jellies are preferable over popping bobas :) I love the traditional tapioca boba though with my normal milk tea. So many options for drinks though! The spritzers are popular right now and they have that option as well. Service was good.
Erica L — Google review
Stopped in to pick up some spices and ended up buying several things. Great store! Good variety of meat, beer, good sodas, and fresh drinks. The spritzers we got didn't last the whole way back to camp. We debated turning around and going back to town for more! The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Mark J — Google review
Love this little shop! A good variety of goods to buy, with option of fresh made drinks to go, but what I really loved was the little containers of loose tea! I love that option vs buying a big container of teas you may actually hate.
Brittany — Google review
Hands down my favorite stop in McGregor. Grabbed a Carmel Apple spritzer on my way to the marina. It was Divine!! I also stop for freezer meals, brats, bacon, breads, deli meat and cheese, local wines. So many reasons to live this shop.
Holly J — Google review
Honestly the worst coffee I have ever had. I got a small hot 'spoonful mint' latte. It supposed to be irish cream and mint. It had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The cup also felt about half full, too. I'm not kidding when I say it tasted like warm milk with dirt. I took the lid off to see that it looks like literal dirty dish water!! My husband got the iced Chai latte. He didn't know he needed to order a dirty chai to get coffee in it. We both tried it, and it was so bland. Never had such a bland iced Chai drink. When they took our order, they didn't take a name. We waited for what seemed like forever, so I went back up to the counter. The drinks were just sitting there......for how long? They didn't call them out or anything. Not getting coffee here again!
Ellie M — Google review
Literally the best chai around. Service is fast and friendly. The owner is always smiling and willing to help you locate anything your heart could desire! Amazing selection of local goods, with the charm only a local coffee shop could have! Always a favorite!
