Portage Pass Trailhead

4.8
(978)
Hiking area
Located near Whittier, Alaska, the Portage Pass Trailhead offers a 4.2-mile out-and-back hike with stunning views of Passage Canal and Whittier. The trail features an elevation gain of 1,433 feet and takes hikers to Portage Lake, showcasing glaciers and waterfalls along the way. Considered easy-moderate in difficulty, this epic hike is a favorite among Anchorage's hiking options.
This is a relatively difficult hike towards the beginning, but it definitely pays off with a great view! It has a beautiful glacier with a pretty lake! I would recommend.
Payton S — Google review
Great hiking trail with stunning views of the Portage glacier. Large parking lot. No facilities. Took about 2.5 hours round trip with a glacier swim included for a group of us who are experienced hikers.
Michelle A — Google review
Fantastic hike to the glacier and back on a misty day. Visibility was lower but the trail and views i did get were outstanding. Overall, took me 4 hours, which included the walk from Whittier and back. Easy enough hike too, trail is well kept. Your feet will get wet though so wear something appropriate. The first portion is the hardest, as it's a steep incline but after that it's much easier. I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 10 for difficulty.
Tim E — Google review
Its a very easy hike just take a rain jacket with you even if there is sun. Bring your dog and some food to sit and enjoy the lake. There is goats in the mountains so bring your binos Remember to pick up your trash I had some snow even in late april
Shadi R — Google review
What a beautiful hike to a wonderful view. The hike was not such a bad one. It was just under 3.5 round trip. We enjoyed the blue colors and contrast with the lake at it base. As we found out on this hike you may see one thing of great beauty in Alaska but give yourself time and Mike's and you will see something else equally as impressive. The Glacier at Portage was one of our top 5 of all of the Glacier we visited while in Alaska.
Eric V — Google review
It’s a steep incline straight to the pass but once you get to the Elevation sign at the top, veer to the right up the rocks there’s a small path veering down and around the left that’ll lead to open rock with a clear view of the glacier and the lake and pond below. If you hop around the other rocks facing the town, there’s a memorial chair and a good view of the bay.
Eggy Y — Google review
Was a really cool hike, if you want to cross over and see the bomber would recommend some cramp-ons. So you can walk on the ice. It took me and my mom around 10 hours. For me to go over the top to the bomer and walk around and look at stuff it was 15 miles out and back.
Axton R — Google review
It was a wonderful hike! But for sure it was tiring! It is about 2.5mil round trip and took me close to 4hrs to complete. (It would be longer if weren't for the ferry to Valdez.) I love taking photos, so I stopped by a lot of places to take photos, and took breaks. I am not the fittest person out there. So I think most people can complete the trail in 4hrs. On the way back it only took 1.5hrs with minimal stops, no photos. The trial is 2 ups and downs. First up ~1mil all the way up 800ft elevation to Portage Pass. Then down and up and down for another mile to Portage Lake. The view is beautiful, I saw multiple lakes and water stream. At the end welcomed with wild flowers and the glacier. Enjoy your hike!

Boat tour agency
Phillips Cruises and Tours, established by Brad Phillips, offers the renowned 26 Glacier Cruise in Prince William Sound. On this journey, travelers can witness marine wildlife and towering tidewater glaciers while cruising on luxurious high-speed catamarans. The friendly crew ensures a memorable experience with interesting facts shared by an onboard Forest Service Ranger.
I honestly wish I could give this 10 stars! 🤩 This was an amazing experience. The crew was so amazing. Seriously beyond amazing. They were all so friendly and did such a great job of coming out on the deck and offering to take group photos, chat about their experience and just went above and beyond to be friendly and kind. 100/10 for customer service. The glacier ice cocktail was so fun. I have never seen ice so clear before! The Galaxy Quest 3.75 hour cruise was perfect for a family of 5 with a 7 year old. I loved how the seats were reserved, so you didn't have any stress trying to find a good spot. And each table had USB charging ports! Which was great since I drained my battery snapping about 1000 photos! The crew was also really great at giving information. Even just explaining when the boat slowed to not create wake for a passing smaller boat. I appreciated all the communication and information on wildlife. We did the rail package so we took the train in. This was so relaxing and we got to see great views on the rain before heading on the cruise.
Nicole W — Google review
Enjoyed the Glacier Quest cruise on a brochure July day! First, the trip to Whittier through the tunnel is an experience! The boat was solid and comfortable and surprisingly only 2/3 full! Lunch was delicious and then the "main Course" came - Glaciers! The shorter Quest cruise gets you up close to 2 glaciers and you see several more along the way! Even had a beverage with fresh glacier ice! Definitely a beautiful, relaxing experience!
T S — Google review
Highly recommend the 26 glaciers cruise! Even on a rainy, cold, cloudy day in September, it was an excellent way to experience a lot of quintessential Alaska scenery all at once. The glaciers were so impressive up close. I was pleasantly surprised we also saw sea otters and sea lions. I especially want to highlight the captain’s commentary throughout the trip. He kept us thoroughly informed about where he was navigating to keep the ride as smooth as possible. Even during a short choppy section, he explained how long it would last and how he would be turning to avoid the rolling motion of waves. As someone who is prone to motion sickness, I especially appreciated knowing what was happening. Their “no seasickness” guarantee is accurate! He was very knowledgeable about the glaciers and pointed out wildlife and did a great job preparing us for when and where he would slow down so we could go outside for photos. The lunch was great too. I got to try both the salmon chowder and vegetarian chili and both were really flavorful. We did the coach transportation option from Anchorage and it was so nice to just sit back and enjoy the views without having to worry about the Whittier tunnel timing. It was worth the added fee. The website and emails gave excellent information about what/where/when, I felt prepared and knew what to expect.
Breanna C — Google review
I can’t give anything less than 5 stars. They offer extraordinary cruises. I took the “26 Glacier Cruise” and it was a perfect choice. It was a 5-hour trip, but it was worth every dollar and every minute on board. The ship is very comfortable, and lunch is provided. The company guarantees that you won’t get seasick — and I can confidently say that it’s true, as Prince William Sound is very calm and virtually wave-free. I saw a variety of wildlife during the trip, including black bears, seagulls, sea lions, seals, and sea otters. The cruise takes you to College Fjord, which ends with a magnificent glacier. It’s very common to witness glacier calving there, and the ship stops for at least 30 minutes to give it a chance to happen. I truly recommend this cruise.
Wojciech T — Google review
100% recommend the 26 glacier cruise! The captain/narrator was easy to understand with a wealth of info about the area and wildlife. We had a ‘bluebird’ day— not a cloud in the sky after a lot of rainy days. The beauty was off the charts! We saw 2 black bears, otters, sea lions plus two calves—meaning Harvard glacier dropped ice twice! Lunch was superb; the crew pulled in some glacial ice for us to try (tastes like ice lol!) and overall it was a superb day. Thanks to all the crew members for a memory we won’t forget. Again, 100% recommend Phillips cruises!
Val S — Google review
We took the Phillips Cruises and Tours Glacier Quest tour, which lasts about 4 hours through calm waters. There’s paid parking in front and free parking a short distance down the road, and bathrooms are available right at the entrance. We were concerned about seasickness, but the water was so calm and the boat so sturdy that the ride felt smooth. Everyone has assigned seats, and you can pre-order a free lunch of your choice. Free water and coffee are also available on board. The crew provides a guided tour of the sound with frequent stops to see wildlife, including otters, bald eagles, and sea lions. You’ll also see waterfalls, and the grand finale is getting up close to the glaciers. The staff even fish out ice from the water that you can touch and photograph. On the way back, they provide freshly baked chocolate cookies and make additional stops along the route. Considering the price and everything we saw, this tour was definitely worth it. Bathrooms are available on board, and the experience was amazing. We really enjoyed the trip and highly recommend Phillips Cruises and Tours.
Shahbaz S — Google review
Well run crew & operations. They provided tremendous detail online as what to expect - it made it very easy to both find the location and the experience throughout the cruise was top notch. The captain, and crew did a wonderful job with all of their guests. The narration along the cruise was really helpful about what we were seeing, the history, and what to expect next. The captain made small adjustments to the trip as we saw wildlife such as otters or sea lions, and some calving of the Harvard Glacier. My wife and I had a wonderful time - highly recommend!
Jason L — Google review
My family did the Glacier Quest Cruise with Phillips and had an amazing time. We lucked out on perfect sunny weather but even if it wasn’t perfect weather I’m sure we would have had a great time. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the tour and the captain did a great job of getting the boat up close for viewing the glaciers. The almost-four hours flew by too fast! I consider these glacier tours as a “must” for anyone visiting the area!

Inn
Nestled in a casual hotel, the Inn At Whittier offers stunning panoramic views of Whittier Harbor and the Prince William Sound. The restaurant provides an authentic Alaskan dining experience with a diverse menu featuring fresh seafood from the Sound. The attached fireside tavern offers a cozy atmosphere to enjoy cocktails and live music on weekends. Guests can also reserve coveted window seats for glacier tour evenings.
I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Inn at Whittier, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. Nestled right along the waterfront, the inn offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere that perfectly complements the stunning Alaskan surroundings. The views of the harbor and nearby mountains were absolutely breathtaking — whether from the cozy lobby or the warm dining area. Speaking of dining, the food at the inn’s restaurant exceeded all expectations. Every dish we tried was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The seafood in particular was a standout with exceptional quality. What truly elevated our experience, though, was the exceptional service, especially from Joshua. Joshua was warm, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. He went out of his way to ensure we felt welcome and well taken care of, offering great recommendations and always greeting us with a smile. His hospitality made a lasting impression and added a personal touch to our time there If you're visiting Whittier, I can’t recommend the Inn enough for the tranquil environment, delicious food, and the outstanding service. We’ll definitely be back!

The restaurant here is apparently somewhat new to the Inn at Whittier. After searching on Google Maps and again on foot, we found the options for restaurants are very minimal. More than one person recommended we check out the Inn. The vibes of this place are excellent. The Inn is beautiful and the views of the bay from the dining room are stunning. Unfortunately, there is still work to be done. Service was slow, very slow. There were a handful of servers darting around the restaurant but no one came to our table for nearly 15 minutes. When they finally arrived they were kind and took our orders. Our table ordered one glass of wine and one cocktail. Another 10-15 minutes would pass before we saw our drinks arrive at the table. The cocktail was just okay. As for the food, we had mixed reactions. The portion sizes were large and even shareable in some cases. Our table ordered halibut, cod, salmon, and Cajun pasta. The reaction to the fish was positive. Nice sized pieces and cooked very well. The biggest issue was with the pasta. As someone who has visited New Orleans on several occasions, I can say with confidence that this is not Cajun food. The sauce was very sweet and barely spicy. I had to add a lot of black pepper just to make this dish easier to eat. I would not order this again. I’m sure there are some quality control issues that need to be worked out and I wish the Inn at Whittier the best. This place has a lot of potential.

We stopped and ate at the restaurant. The staff was very polite and got us everything we needed. Food was amazing. It was very fresh and cooked correctly. My boys got to try Crab and oysters. Crab was a big hit. Oysters not so much for them but they were amazing. We will be back to try other things. Great place to eat I highly recommend eating here.

We didn't stay at Inn, we ate at the restaurant and I liked the clam chowder, smoke salmon adds to the flavor. The bread with soup and salmon dip is really good. Cousin had the baked Halibut and I got the Halibut Fish and chips and we shared, both were good. The Cosmo from bar was strong, so great if you like that way. The salmon dip had chunks of salmon and I liked it, my hubby said mine is better tho 😁 Kalan was friendly and fast, attentive. People make the place better, and she was great. We'd go again.

Wonderful place to stop for a cocktail. Bartender very lovely and helped with wine selection. Cannot beat the views from every table! Also food looked very good.
Janine K — Google review
Ishmael was my bartender/server and I appreciated speaking with him. He’s been managing the bar for a couple years. From New Orleans originally and stays here in Whittier for the summers. Bar has an excellent selection of quality liquors, and a pair of delicious IPAs: the King St Hazy and Denali Twister Creek. Even if you choose to sit at the bar instead of the tables overlooking the harbor, the mirrors provide a full coverage view for those of us at the bar itself!

In Whittier, Alaska, visitors can experience the unique thrill of exploring Prince William Sound on a guided jet-ski tour with companies like Alaska Wild Guides and Glacier Jetski Adventures. These tours offer an intimate and safe way to witness the area's stunning glaciers while providing all necessary gear and instruction. After a morning adventure, travelers can head to Wild Catch Cafe for a delightful lunch experience.
Lovely place! I went there on Tuesday. I heard their salmon burger was a gem so I had to try it. Man, it did not disappoint me. They charged me $29 though, not the price on the menu. They claimed they used higher quality salmon. I don’t know what they normally use but the salmon I got on that day was great. My husband got a burger; he also loved it. Their buns were nice and soft. Ps. Salmon burger normally comes with pickles but I asked them to not add them
Chanakan G — Google review
There are not very many places to eat in the area and we stopped in wild catch Cafe. We ordered the chowder which was very thick and creamy. It needed a little bit of seasoning. We also ordered the halibut and fries which was very good. And three of us had salmon burgers. They were done very well and had a good seasoning. If you're in the area I would not hesitate to eat there. It was a little pricey but well worth it.

Cute, quaint cafe-style restaurant. We came for brunch. The food was good. We tried reindeer sausage and the three meat omelet. Took off a star because it was confusing to know where to order and where to sit. There’s seating in the back, but no signs for how to get there. Also, the only menu was written up on a chalkboard. It would be nice to have a menu with descriptions of each food (for example, what is in the three-meat omelet).

Great restaurant with a wide variety of food. We tried the grilled cheese and fries, and they were delicious. Prices are reasonable too!

Took a trip on the Alaska RR and enjoyed stopping here for both lunch and dinner. The reindeer chili was a great lunch choice, and the fish/halibut and chips/fries on the dinner ride back was also very good. Very good portions on the fish and fries and a bowl of chili will fill you right up. It's just a smidge spicy and they serve it with toast. Overall a very good experience. Thank you!!

Even if you're not heading out on the water with them, it's a great spot to fuel up for Alaskan adventures.
Jen and Ty were a great team on our trip. They shared a good amount of information but didn’t overwhelm us. There was plenty of time for questions and they were happy to talk about everything from wildlife, life in Whittier, to how the glaciers carved out the cliffs. The snacks and hot drinks were a great touch for what was a cold and wet trip. A 10/10 experience.

Captain Tyler took us on an amazing tour! We saw not only several glaciers up close, but some amazing waterfalls and more wildlife than expected (whales, porpoise, bald eagles, sea lions, and more!). Highly recommend! He was also engaging and knowledge, and made the excursion exceptional.
Lisa Y — Google review
My friends and I took a tour with Tyler and he exceeded our expectations tenfold. At the start Tyler asked what we wanted to see. Some wanted glaciers, others asked about wildlife, scenery, and marine life. Tyler took us from beautiful mountains, to small corners where we saw black bears eating salmon, and Eagles flying overhead, to islands covered in sleeping Sea lions, Puffins, and Red starfish. My favorite was the Glaciers, where we actually witnessed 2 seperate glacier walls break away and fall into the water. And of course we can't forget the cute Otters, laying on their backs, playing in groups. We definitely gave him an A+ for holding off the heavy clouds until we got back. We all had a blast, and thank Tyler for a great time. --Mike, Joel, Mavis, and Don.

Once in a lifetime experience! This was the highlight of our trip to Alaska. Capt. Jen was phenomenal and so knowledgeable about all things Alaska. We learned so much about the glaciers and the wildlife. The best 8 hours we have ever spent on a boat. The sandwich lunch and snacks were wonderful. Lazy Otter Charters did an exceptional job of making this a 10/10 experience!

Awesome cruise with Captain Jenn and naturalist Aubrey! We felt safe, well-cared for and the commentary was great. We enjoyed a variety of weather during our cruise and saw the most beautiful rainbow! I also liked getting off the boat to walk along the beach- the small black stones were worn smooth and thin and being able to look up close to the incredible mosses and vegetation was fascinating!

We had Jen as a captain today and she was incredible! Very knowledgeable and great at sharing that info in a really interesting and enjoyable way! We had a great time and loved seeing all the wild life and incredible views. Despite a forecast of rain, we couldn't of had better weather.

Excellent boat tour to see the glaciers in Prince William Sound. Our captain Jenn and naturalist Aubrey were pleasant and knowledgeable. They both made sure we had a smooth ride and were looking out to show us wildlife, both tidewater glaciers in the area and pointed out other glaciers, got up close to a waterfall and landed on a beach at decision point. Highly recommend!

Captain Butters and 1st Mate Ryken were great. It was a tough day for fishing but Capt Butters worked hard to find the fish while keeping a great attitude. Crazy Ray's provides the greatest fishing adventures you could ever dream of! I've lived in Alaska for over 40 years and been on numerous fishing charters all over the state, but Crazy Ray's provides an incredible experience that delivers EVERY SINGLE TIME. His boats are the absolute best and safest on the water. His crew are the hardest working and most committed individuals I've ever seen. His dedication and drive to finding the fish and filling the boat is relentless. Ray not only has the right tackle, the right gear, and the the right attitude, but he has years of experience with unmatched knowledge of the majestic Prince William Sound and the fish that inhabit the area. That is how he is able to provide such incredible experiences and why I continue to go back year after year. BUT WAIT... just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I discovered the Liveaboard Adventure that Crazy Ray's offers. This incredible experience puts you in one of the most spacious and comfortable fishing vessels I've ever seen, and allows for multi-day charters to maximize your time on the water and land multiple species of fish, squid, and shrimp. Outfitted with comfortable bunk beds, a Traeger pellet grill, and a full kitchen, you can literally stay on the water and fish for as long as you want. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure that fills your freezer with the best fresh Alaskan seafood you can get... if you're longing to see the unmatched beauty and ruggedness of Alaska from the safety and warmth of a premier vessel... if you love to laugh and listen to stories and make memories you'll never forget... Crazy Ray's Adventures is the only company that will deliver this world class experience!

My dad and I went on a combo halibut fishing trip and we LOVED it! Our guide was John and he was super helpful and knew all the best fishing spots! 10/10 would recommend, and I would definitely book with Crazy Ray’s again if I ever got the chance.

I read some mixed reviews for Crazy Ray's Whittier so decided to contribute my experience. We were very satisfied with our experience. We didn't have expectations of catching a huge halibut but wanted to catch fish. My wife and I both caught our limit of rockfish, salmon and halibut, and caught more cod and flounder than we wanted to keep. Our captain wasn't the most polished person but was competent and excited about catching fish, and obviously he put us on the fish. The only reason I did not give five stars is that the boat could use some maintenance. It did not cause any issues for us, but there were things that probably should be fixed.

And for needed humor there was a bird begging for a fry which a tourist definitely gave him 🤣 That fried fish 👀 so worth it. I love whittier. And this is now my must go to for lunch after my hike. And the lemonade was lovely. Friendly staff. Very clean. They do have a restroom inside. Plenty of seating. In all an enjoyable lunch 🖤

A great place to grab a bite to eat prior to any outing in Whittier, Ak. The food was hot and delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff was friendly and they had the cleanest bathroom we’ve been in in our trip. If you don’t stop here, it’s your own fault. You must get a bowl of the clam chowder !!!

Honestly my favorite meal in Alaska this far. Very friendly service. Great halibut, shrimp, and clam chowder. Locally caught and fresh. I highly recommend this place. I would drive out here just for lunch. Great views and just an awesome place.

We got there around 6 pm on Tuesday. There were people dining but it wasn’t really busy. I loved my halibut sandwich. My husband who doesn’t eat seafood enjoyed his chicken strips and fries. I’ll definitely go back when I visit Whittier next time.
Chanakan G — Google review
Great local place to eat with fresh and delicious food priced well. We had the fish (cod) and chips and a cup of clam & salmon chowder. Both were delicious and served quickly.
Matthew ( — Google review
We ordered, the half and half (which is half halibut and half shrimp), the halibut, and the fish and chips. The fish and shrimp were good, the fries were mediocre. We came again a couple days later after fishing, but they said the wait would be close to 40 minutes, so we left. I’d recommend the Wild Catch Cafe in Whittier over this one, but both are good.
Lacey H — Google review
You know it's good food when all the tables stay filled. The food was fresh and well prepared. Halibut and shrimp was the best I've had. Shared some fries with a local beggar. Hubby had a halibut sandwich and complained that there was too much food! Recommend if you are in Whittier!

Great service and food. Recommend their fish sandwich (comes with tomato, onion, lettuce and tartar sauce) They have chicken strips if you don’t eat fish

Seafood restaurant
China Sea Restaurant in Alaska offers exceptional seafood dishes that will impress even the most discerning palates. Despite being a Chinese restaurant, their seafood selection is outstanding. The local shrimps are particularly noteworthy and cooked to perfection. In addition to the delicious food, the restaurant boasts a stunning view of the harbor which adds to the overall dining experience. The staff is friendly and accommodating, ensuring excellent service throughout your visit.
Very friendly staff. The grilled halibut was beautifully presented and the sauce on the veggies was quite tasty. I was actually surprised to see they had thin cut fries! These are hard to come by unless you’re at McDonald’s.

Delicious food. Warmed up with their green tea and egg drop soup after being out in the rain. The Mongolian beef was very good. I will be back next time I visit Whittier.

You have to go here! The food we had was some of the best in Alaska.. You don't think of a Chinese restaurant when trying to eat seafood but trust us and just go. They had some of the best local shrimps .. so perfect. The view of the harbor is stunning.

Delicious Alaskan Chinese food! Friendly service and a beautiful view of the harbor. The lo mein noodles are cooked to perfection and the deep fried halibut is light and flakey. Their menu has a large selection of different foods, not just Chinese. If you're in Whittier and hungry this is a great place to stop. A little on the $$$ spendy side, but you get quite a bit of food for you money.

My family and I ate here while in Whittier. While it may be one of the few restaurants in the small town, it's definitely good! Our server was really sweet and cheery. My grandpa and I both got the sweet and sour chicken, and it's definitely some of the better chicken I've had. Everybody else liked their food as well. Stop by if you want to have some good Chinese food.

Embark on an exhilarating adventure with Glacier JetSki Adventures, the first company to offer glacier tours on jet skis. Their eco-friendly and easy-to-operate jet skis allow you to get closer to Alaska's waterfalls and glaciers than ever before. This unique experience offers a more intimate and faster-paced alternative to traditional tours, providing an up-close encounter with the stunning scenery of Blackstone Bay.
This was one of the sickest experiences ever! The owner is the sweetest person and each guide really took their time with explaining everything and made all of us feel super comfortable with the equipment and the excursion. The jet skis have heated handle bars which was clutch and the body suit they put us in keeps you really warm. I would recommend any of my friends or family to come and do this. They keep the groups small so it really feels intimate and like you are apart of a new friend group exploring the untouched Alaska :) YOU SHOULD DO THIS TOUR 10000% and you will get the drippiest pics ever for ya instagrammmmmm ;)

We had an absolute blast! We did this after we got off our cruise in mid-June. The equipment is top notch and they made sure everyone was comfortable with the equipment and safety procedures before you start. The jetskis have dry compartments because trust me you are going to want to take ALL the photos. 100% worth it. It is an AMAZING way to see the glaciers and the beauty of Alaska up close!

We had a blast on our jet ski tour in Whittier! We went in July. I would highly recommend doing this!! Most of our party had never driven jet skis but the owner and our 2 guides Micah and Mirika made it so easy! We had so much fun seeing many different glaciers and waterfalls. We saw seals, birds and eagle and a sea otter. Our tour was several hours. I recommend layers, it’s chilly on the water. The dry suits kept us dry and warm though. Whittier is a very small town but has a few restaurants and shops with beautiful views of the marina and mountains. Everyone said this was the favorite part of our vacation!

Had a great time. I highly recommend this tour for tourists or residents. Very interesting and well run business. No complaints or hesitations on a 5 star review.

Hands down the best adventure we booked in Alaska!! It was 2 adults plus our 17 & 19 yr old kids. Only one of us had ever driven a jet ski. The guides gave clear instructions and were there to help if you had questions. The owners were hospitable and lovely. Rebecca was a lot of help helping us determine if their suits would fit my 6’8” husband and 6’7” son— they did!! Just book it!!! You will not regret it.

WOW!! What an amazing adventure! I did this trip a week ago and I'm so glad I did! I was with my husband and three adult kids and this was by far the favorite thing we all did while visiting Alaska! Charlie, Beck, Mason, Izzy, Micha and Megan took care of us, from helping us on and off with the dry suit and shoes, to making me feel comfortable driving the jetski. We especially loved Mason's history of Whittier and his jokes!! It's a five star, small, family run business that I highly recommend!
Bridget A — Google review
Holy cow, it's worth every penny. HIGHLY recommend! GREAT guides and lots of stops for pictures right next to glaciers and waterfalls. It's awe-inspiring. 3 hrs of ride time, and it's not a slow pace. We were haulin butt most of the time. The watercraft are so incredibly stable, that almost no skill is necessary.

Absolutely worth the money. Our trip last year got canceled due to really bad weather. We got our refund easy and waited another year. The weather cooperated this time and we had an awesome time. Buckner Building

Historical landmark
The Buckner Building, a six-story structure made of reinforced concrete, is a fascinating relic of the U.S. military with a rich history. Built in 1953 during the Cold War era, it was designed to accommodate 1000 soldiers and housed various facilities including a hospital, theater, bowling alley, jail, church, bakery, and more. Situated on a hill in Whittier, Alaska, it is considered one of the most haunted places in town.
Basement has been renovated from a gun range into a pool with rusty playground equipment... Dark hallways great for those with light sensitivity and a love for 90's ghost hunter show vibes... No continental breakfast and the beds are a bit damp and rotting... 3 outta 5 stars... wouldn't change a thing...
Heather — Google review
Well, I thought there would be some exploration, but it is fenced off. This is an end of line destination just to read a sign. It's pretty cool, but not what I expected. It's a little bit like driving out to walk around a prison if you are into that sort of thing. There is historical significance, but I wish it was better preserved and explorable.

This is a cool building to explore while waiting for the cruise. Well worth walking to this building and checking it out!

most interesting place ive ever been to the history the views its all exciting me and a good buddy of mine have gone in it multiple times and there's so much to explore form the theater to the gun range to the secret underground tunnel that goes about a mile back underground its also a great place to experience some crazy things from doors slamming shut to hearing voices definitely a place to go. and explore just do it in the winter its the easiest time to enter the building through the lowest window just be aware theres asbestos every where so where a n95 mask.

Emerald Cove Trail

Hiking area
The Emerald Cove Trail, also known as the Shotgun Cove Trail, is a 6.6-mile coastal hike in Whittier, Alaska. The trail offers stunning views of Prince William Sound and takes hikers to waterfalls, coves, and a tidal-fed lagoon. For those seeking shorter options, there's a one-mile hike to stone steps leading down to the beach or a halfway point that leads to Emerald Cove.
I arrived in a kayak. The beach is perfect- nice gravel and protected from most of the waves in Passage Canal. There is a bear proof food locker on the far end of the beach, farthest from the camping sites. There is one very nice camping site on the beach and 2 good gravel pads in the trees. There is a nice viewpoint to view Passage Canal back toward Whittier.
Tim G — Google review
This is an incredible trail to see Whittier! The waterfall and cove at the end was a blast! However, if your coming onto this trail in your nice hiking books… forget about it. My family called this trail the Xtratuf trail because it is impossible to not get your feet covered in mud at least at some point but it’s definitely worth it when you get to the end. Also if you’re bringing young kids will definitely need some endurance and good attitudes to get through the mud👍 All in all I was very impressed with how well the trail was maintained with steps and various boards all throughout and most of all I was impressed by the gorgeous scenery all throughout but especially at the end.
Justin F — Google review
This trail has quickly become my favorite trail. The trail traverses through very thick forests of devils club, blueberry shrubs, skunk cabbage and thick coastal spruce. Waterfalls and streams are abundant and views of the coast are breathtaking! The trail in early summer is very muddy but well maintained for the first mile with wooden planks. I was not able to complete the full hike but evidently it goes on for 7 miles or so.

Fabulous hike and very kid friendly. We went in late fall and there was a lot of mud but had a great time. Lovely waterfall where we stopped and turned around!

Emerald cove trail is located in Whittier Alaska. Is about an hour outside of Anchorage, not counting the trip through the tunnel ( add an additional 15 to 25 minutes for that). There's a tunnel fee. Once inside Whittier make a right up the hill and into town. You'll find emerald cove trail. I did not take the hike but it looks enchanting from where I was which was the parking lot entrance. It is a beautiful little stash away place cozied up next to the back neighborhoods of Whittier. Camping barbecuing trail hiking swimming. I just happened to take a couple pictures while I was there and will submit with this review it

Nestled within the Anchor Inn Hotel, the Prince William Sound Museum offers a captivating glimpse into Whittier's history. With an array of exhibits and artifacts, the museum chronicles the area's significance as a rail terminal and military port during World War II and the Cold War. Notably, it features thirty-two exhibits dedicated to pivotal events such as the construction of the Whittier Tunnel.
This museum comprises a rich collection of artifacts and stories about the history of Whittier, including its importance to the WWII war and Cold War. Local historian Ted Spencer has spent decades collecting and curating, and his interpretive signage brings the history alive. This museum is reason enough for a visit to Whittier. Next time, I’ll stay an extra day to hike some of the nearby nature trails. The surrounding mountains are breathtaking.

This museum was the best kept secret in Whittier. We took the pedestrian tunnel over and paid the $5 admission fee and spent over an hour looking at everything. This museum was so nice. So much information so clean, and information presented in such a factual way without any politics or influence. It really focused on hero stories. HIGHLY recommend.

This museum is tucked away in an unassuming strip mall. But once you're inside, this place has some of the best history on Alaska, as well as some of the most well preserved WW2 artifacts. It was not busy and I was able to spend as much time as I wanted reading the rich exhibits.

Whittier Bay Campground

Campground
Located near the harbor, City of Whittier Campground offers a convenient base for exploring the area. The stunning views from the campground are breathtaking when the weather is clear. While it's essentially a gravel lot with defined spaces, visitors are just a few feet from the water. The campground provides basic amenities such as pit toilets and clean facilities with a camp host available at times. Despite being a simple setup, it offers incredible value for its beautiful surroundings and proximity to fishing spots and beaches.
So beautiful here! Basic campground offering nice pit toilets and a view - so amazing! We saw two cruise ships dock during our one night stay. The road is rough going in and out of the campground so be aware. The tunnel is a must do. For our truck and travel trailer $22 US.
Jeannie N — Google review
It was a gravel parking lot for parking your RV and camping. It seemed like they had a few people staying the night we stayed in the campground. It’s a convenient location to the left of the tunnel and the cruise ships pull in near here. It’s also close to a stream that’s full of fish and we saw a bear come out of the trees and catch fish.
Dave S — Google review
Its a gravel parking lot where RVs go to run their generators all damn night. No rules or enforcement. Pit toilets. Nice view. Not many options in Whittier. Lots of nails in the gravel. Beware.
Fred S — Google review
Definitely convenient but not terribly organized. The website had the wrong address and phone number for going to pay for a site so it took a bit to find and figure that out. Many people had cars and trailers parked in spots or were trying to save spots and that made it frustrating for finding something for a RV. Sites are not clearly marked.
Brittany — Google review
Stopped here briefly while waiting for the tunnel. Not many amenities for camping. There is a restroom and a gravel lot. That's it. If you can boulder without water and power then this is an inexpensive option for am overnight.
Marc M — Google review
So so. No tables , no power , no water , no sever. No view . Price not to bad $20per day . They have toilets on camp side.
NICK S — Google review
Nice parking lot. FCFS - sign is telling to pay at the harbor office, but you can actually now pay with their pay-for-parking app Passport - 11$/night today on July 6th on Saturday - Zone 9016 (in app you need to choose zones) as of 21:00 plenty of parking. That’s for car with tent.

Then views from this campground, when the weather cooperates, are amazing. Yes, it's basically a big gravel lot, but there are defined spaces and you are just a few feet from the water. Just two pit toilets, but they were clean and there was a camp host when we were there. We stayed at the campground in town one night as well, I liked this one better because of the views. Note that it would be a bit of a hike to town from this one.

Portage Glacier is a must-visit destination in Alaska, offering a range of activities and breathtaking natural beauty. Start your journey at the Williwaw Fish Viewing Platform and follow the scenic Portage Highway to reach the Trail of Blue Ice and Begich, Boggs Visitor Center. Immerse yourself in the area's natural history and consider hiking back to Byron Glacier for an adventurous experience.
Easy boat ride to see the glacier. Overall neat to see but maybe not the most magnificent one in the area. Interesting to see what mother nature has done over centuries and realize the scale of the world we live in. Boat was in great shape and staff were friendly and helpful to explain about the glacier and area.
Jozef W — Google review
During our boat ride to the glacier, we saw many scenic panorama's. At the glacier itself, we got amazingly close (not a huge frontage so the risk of calving and damage was slight). It was a bright sunny and relatively clear skied day so we had some brilliant blue hues from the solid ice near the base of the glacier.
Graham T — Google review
Amazing experience to walk on the glacier. Blue sky, white glacier, green grass. What a colorful view. 3 miles easy hiking in and out.
Am D — Google review
Probably the easiest glacier to get to from Anchorage. It hasn't been visible from the visitor center, or Portgage Glacier Road, for a few decades. So you'll need to take the cruise/kayak, hike over the mountains from Whittier, or walk during the winter. Still, Portgage Glacier is an impressive geological wonder and quite easy to get to

Stopped into Whittier for a day/night. This is an old military barracks but was comfortable and felt safe to stay. Didn’t get any creepy feels as I saw on some other reviews. Room was clean. Staff was helpful. I would say having better directions to the office would be helpful. But no real complaints here.

This hotel is not four star hotel at all, which labeled a four star on google map and misleading me to order it. if I can, I want to give them 0 star. Firstly, the worker’s attitude is really bad. When I arrive, she said your room only have a bed and table. That’s it. You pay so less money and what do u expect? I paid more than $100 for it. She looked down on me and really hurt me.Secondly, the room is not clean and I tried to check the room before I checked in. She said our room was occupied and can’t check with a very rude attitude. Thirdly, they have Overlord clause for cancellation policy. Most people booked that hotel for short-stay one night and who will cancel 48 hour in advance when u are not arriving Alaska yet. It is really ridiculous. I tried to talked to worker to cancel the booking due to the real bad experience. The worker and the boss both use their cancellation policy to persuade me for more than 30 min. You try to talk to them and they just use the same sentence to talk back and forth. Finally, I tried to cancel on their website and I can’t. I make a record and if needed, I can public it here. It is so bad. I never suggest anybody to book this hotel any more. We paid money for nothing and get very angry for my perfect Alaska trip. This is only unhappy thing during my trip. Again, don’t book this hotel.

We stopped in for a meal before a tour we did in Whittier. Halibut fish and chips was pretty good. It came out quick but we were never given any utensils so we had to eat with our hands. Women’s bathroom had no soap or paper towels.

I find it to be a really good hotel, especially for a place like Whittier. If you’re a true traveler and not looking for luxury, this place is perfect for you. There’s also a nice bar with food and drinks. I met a great bartender there who made me an Alaskan drink — the Duck Fart. So be careful when you enter the bar… you might leave feeling like a duck 😄!
Wojciech T — Google review
The place is very old but kept in good condition. Check-in is fairly easy. Key-pad entry makes it easy (not to worry about losing a key or key-card). The room we stayed was huge (essentially an apartment size) with separate kitchen, big screen tv in living room, sofa, dining table, fridge, microwave, stove etc. Bedroom had its own tv with two twin beds. The view is great (facing the snowy mountain). Only setback I can think of is, we felt that the room (only kitchen and living room) wasn’t cleaned properly. The bedroom was good.

Honestly the worse experience of my life. When I called to book the room I needed it for Sunday , but it was booked for the wrong day .Their website was down so I called. The woman I spoke with a lady who was nice and helped me. However she booked it for the wrong day. When the cruise line informed us we couldnt get off until 10 am Sunday I called right away. I dealt with the rudest supervisor who claimed I was a liar and refused to refund me 189 dollars I was already charged with. She claimed it was my fault and not her associates. She even was rude to my grandma on the phone. We explained we had no idea when the cruise was booked what time we were allowed off . I even told the lady when I booked the room what cruise line we were coming in on and what time we docked. I would never book with this place again nor would I advise anyone else too. The customer service I received was the worst and to call myself and my grandma a liar is beyond uncalled for. You should be ashamed of yourself. I was friendly on the phone trying to explain our situation, I even asked for a half refund because the sitution was neither my grams nor I fault. LESSON LEARNED !! Well be prepared to be screwed by the Anchor Inn.

The Halibut wasn’t anything to get excited over. Prices are fair for the location. If you need a cold beer and deep friend food, it’s perfect. Service was ok. Never checked on us, just gave us the food and drink and left us alone until we asked for a check. I give it 3 Busch lights out of 5.

This place is a great coffee shop with an amazing view and small eats. Turkey pesto panini was delicious. Outstanding customer service!

Stopped by after hours without realizing they were closed, but the owner kindly reopened the entire cafe just to serve us coffee. That kind of kindness and hospitality is rare these days. The coffee was great, but what really stood out was the warmth and generosity. Truly appreciate it!

Every 2 weeks I come to Oceanfront Café. Everytime Kathy (the owner) was super nice and friendly. The coffee is really good (I recommend the pistachio flavor) and the muffins are even better. I strongly recommend to visit this place.

What a cozy spot with a spectacular view overlooking Prince William Sound. My family and I stopped in for lunch, and had the chowder (delicious), halibut bites (super good) and local fresh caught shrimp tacos (yum). Staff was friendly and helpful; there is both indoor and outdoor seating, great for whatever weather the day holds. A great spot for a bite to eat, a sweet treat or hand crafted espresso drink.

Pizza Takeout
Whittier Ice Cream and Pizza is a charming eatery known for its delicious food and friendly service. Visitors have praised the cheeseless pizza and yummy flatbread, as well as the tempting ice cream and shakes. The staff is described as kind and accommodating, making it a favorite hangout spot for many. Despite being in an isolated town, the prices are considered reasonable by most, especially when compared to other places in the country.
Was one of 2 food options after glacier tour, but was delighted to find fresh grilled fish tacos. Lack of ambiance made it even more epic. Ice cream blackberry was very flavorful although made in anchorage. Would make it a stop in whittier!

We had the all meat pizza, and a couple of sodas, with ice cream cones for dessert - came in around $40, which is reasonable considering the area. The flatbread pizza was very tasty and we enjoyed our ice cream very much! While we ate, we enjoyed the view even more!

The Vegetarian flat bread pizza was great. Tasted just like Margarita Pizza. Would definitely recommend. Service was quick!

Had the Mountain Berry ice cream and it was SO GOOD!! Super creamy and flavorful. They gave me a very generous kids scoop too. Great way to cap off a wonderful time in Whittier!

Came in from Ohio and stopped for lunch. Had the pepperoni flatbread pizza. Was very impressed with the quality and size.

the flatbreads are not very large for the price but their taste is good.

Whittier Harbor Master in Alaska is a year-round, full-service facility catering to the needs of boaters. With 350 slips accommodating boats up to 54 feet long, it offers both transient and permanent berths. Visitors can rent boats for a day on the water or simply enjoy the scenic views and possibly catch sight of leaping salmon. Despite its small population, Whittier attracts over 700,000 annual visitors during the summer months.
The city harbormaster office is friendly and excells at communicating. They are one of the few harbors I have been to that I am greeted with a smile. We felt welcome. The docks are well maintained. It has been a great place to keep our boat.

We had a multi-day kayak trip with some youth. Rusty, with the harbormaster's office, called us and messaged us to ensure we were safe during our trip and that we returned safely. When we are taking a bunch of youth, it's nice to know that someone is constantly watching over us. We were grateful for the service.

We took a cruise there to see the fjords and the glaciers and it was amazing. This is what I'm rating. The board was great and the crew too. The harbor is nice but I mean it's a fishing harbor.... But I really enjoyed our short stay there. Beautiful surroundings.
Lilly B — Google review
They raised the price of a launch to $25 despite there being no parking here! I don't know of any other harbors in Southcentral AK that don't include parking with the launch fee. Homer is only $20 and you can park there 30 days. Here you pay $25 to launch and $15/day parking, so if you plan to launch Friday and retrieve Sunday you're looking at $70. Ludicrous.

Begich Towers Condominium, located in Whittier, Alaska, is a Cold War-era building with a fascinating history. Originally part of a secret Army base, it was abandoned when the Army moved out in 1960. Now occupied and well-maintained, this 14-story building is known for its historical intrigue and rumored hauntings. The town of Whittier itself has a haunting past, having been ravaged by a tsunami following the 1964 earthquake.
Fascinating place. Worth a visit when visiting the town. There is a library and historical photos. Ground floor open to public, others closed.
Matija S — Google review
This is one place that you must visit when in Whittier. it's history is amazing. How whole town can live in one building. Of course, things has changed; but history still remained.
Jim S — Google review
I thought, what the hell ? and gave it five stars because of the coolness factor. Despite the fact that it's a huge 14 story building practically in the middle of nowhere, and damned near everyone in Whittier lives there, it's reputed to be haunted. Enough so for it to make the Top 10 list of the most haunted places in Alaska. As is the entire town. It was ravaged by the Tsunami that followed the 1964 Earthquake that also claimed 13 lives of the 70 residents who lived in Whittier at the time. It was built in 1956 by the military, and transferred to civilian ownership in 1975.

Whittier first appeared on the 1950 U.S. census as an unincorporated village. It formally incorporated in 1969. As of 2018, there were 205 people living in the city, with 313 available housing units. Almost the entirety of this population lives within the 14-story Begich Towers.
Annia L — Google review
Hotel is very old as the whole town of Whittier, but views are not bad
Aleksey K — Google review
Impossible to miss and certainly unique! And somehow it makes me crave Neapolitan ice cream if I look at it for too long.
Andrew L — Google review
Huge building kept very clean by the custodians. Very Ivey outside. Quite a few dogs in this neighborhood they are all better behaved than my own. Parking is a breeze closed to the school and beautiful hiking nearby. The post office, churches, store, storage laundry facilities weight room and even a notary are all on sight can’t forget waffle sundays at Larry Gilman’s every Sunday
Jaeleen Z — Google review
Cool building, but a bit of smelly inside.
