Interstate State Park is a picturesque riverside park located in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking among old lava flows and glacial potholes, canoeing, camping, and fishing along the rushing St. Croix River. Visitors can explore natural geological marvels like the Bake Oven and the Bottomless Pit on the Pothole Trail, which features stunning vistas but requires navigating numerous steps.
This is a wonderful place to visit, and it’s only an hour from the Twin Cities. We spent two nights in Taylors Falls near the end of winter, and on the way back home, we stopped by Stillwater since it was along the way. In the summer, it’s probably easy to walk the trails here, but in the winter, it can be a challenge. We’ll definitely come back in the summer to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Stopped by after work, this place was recommended by coworker. I’m visiting from Houston and I love sight seeing. It was not busy during my arrival on a Wednesday around 7pm. Paid 7 dollar for day parking. You can always enter through the Minnesota side also and the parking uses the same tag. Plenty of parking and I notice there’s a couple of park benches along the way. Trails were very nice, easy for folks of all ages to trek. You can explore the rocky area at your own risk, I wouldn’t recommend it for kids unless you feel comfortable. This place is really beautiful and I wished I had more time to explore. Mother Nature is a true artist.

One of my favorite parks. The stairs on the bluffs trail look like they need some love, but otherwise great views, lots of trail options, can ride the paddle boat for a fee (as of my post, it's dog friendly as well at no extra charge). There's canoe/kayak rental and a shuttle bus that will bring you back. Lots of options. Campground is less than a mile down the road from town.

9/29/25 2pm. A nice and interesting State Park to visit along the St Croix River. Typically busy, but not on this Monday is why we went. Barely anyone there and as a result lots of parking. It was unseasonably hot, 85, so we didn't do a lot of walking around like we usually do. The unusual rock formations in the park are a contrast to the rugged jagget rocks and cliffs along the St Croix River.

Absolutely lovely trails!!! Kept up very nice and is clean! They have very accessible restrooms as well. This is definitely a trail to come visit if you're in Minnesota or Wisconsin. The views are breathtaking and the people who visit the area are also so very kind!
Espen D — Google review
I had never heard of Interstate State park and have lived mostly in Minnesota most of my life. So, for me personally on this Labor Day adventure the enjoyment for me was seeing a part of Minnesota I didn't know exist. I'm overweight and out of shape so was a bit intimidated by a lot of hiking. I did though see the visitor center and go a short way down the potholes trail near the visitor center. I was very impressed by what I saw and there were lots of people there and it was a short but fun enriching experience. It was nice to commune with nature and see these potholes. I'm truly amazed by the glacial potholes. I found inspiration for my fitness goals maybe to hike there someday. I will hopefully return and do a longer hike, camp etc. I really liked it there though and it was beautiful late summer weather. I highly recommend anyone check out this place.
Colette E — Google review
We've been there many times and it's gorgeous there. The paths and trails are clearly marked and the parking is easy. The camping is fun and they have great spaces to set up tents. I highly recommend checking it out. Plus it's near Stillwater where there you can shop or grab some food.

We were staying in Minneapolis and wanted to get out of the city for a hike and this turned out to be a great choice! Lots of options to make it as long or as short of a hike as you want with decent signage. It was beautiful with some gorgeous views, and there were a lot of fun mushrooms and flowers popping up!

Folsom House, located in the historic Angel Hill District, is a restored 1850s home that offers visitors a glimpse into the lumber era. The house was once owned by W.H.C. Folsom, a prominent figure in the timber business and state senator. Visitors can take a tour of the house for a fee and learn about its rich history from knowledgeable guides.
Took this tour last week. You just cannot go wrong taking this 60-minute tour! Learn all about what its like for some poor hard-working kid growing up to be a rich and influential man, all within the 1800's. Makes you want to go get his autobiography. Can't want for the movie to come out. Best part was how a farmer whose land was flooded by dam builders blew it up with dynamite! That caused a HUGE log jam. Serves them right! Farmer should get compensated. The one thing I would change which I can't fault the tour guide was how they characterized our hero Mr Folson in bravely fighting Dakota Indians in 1962. Dakota were facing starvation and displacement by government so they attacked ppl around them. Fighting starving ppl is not a brave thing to do. Tour guide should speak about the event as unfortunate for everyone. That's all. ALWAYS LEARN HISTORY! so you don't repeat the same mistakes, plus you learn how others do things the right way so you can repeat those same successes. The house is wheelchair accessible to get inside but the second-floor part of tour would be off limits.

Great find! The staff were friendly and gave us a little personal tour! Great source of local history. Beautiful house and grounds.

We took the tour on a whim having heard about the house after taking the boat tour and we're definitely not disappointed! The beautifully kept house is easy to find. The volunteers are quite knowledgeable and have done their research on this one! Great tour!

The Folsom House is one of the better small historic sites that I have visited anywhere. The Tour is excellent, packed with Minnesota and Wisconsin frontier lore and artifacts. The site is exceedingly well preserved. Definitely worth your stop!

Very knowledgeable guide! Fantastic historic material. Also, great location with plenty of other things to do in the area.

This was a huge surprise, unplanned and delightful.. The house was built in the 1850's and it remains in great shape today.. The William Folsom story is really intesting.. He had quite a life.. The "Tour Guide" whose name I can't remember, was wonderful, intesting, well informed and friendly.. Our visit to the House museum was the highlight of our day trip to Taylor's Falls.. a wonderful and unexpected surprise I recommend the tour to all

Kayaking & Canoeing
Taylors Falls Canoe & Kayak Rental offers the opportunity to rent canoes or kayaks for a downstream adventure with shuttle pickup at Osceola or William O Brian State Park. The 3-5 hour trip requires an early start, but it's a great activity for families with tweens and teens. Booking online is convenient, and starting at Interstate State Park makes for an easy launch point.
Such a great experience. The staff is friendly, the route is beautiful, and the shuttle back to your car is so easy. My wife and I do this at least once a year.

Great experience. The kids learned they can do hard things. They were proud of their hard work. We stopped to have a picnic lunch half way. It took us 3 hours to paddle from Interstate Park (Mn side) to Osceola landing as a family of 5. Kids age 7, 11, & 13; with five stops for breaks, switching vessels, etc. we used our two kayaks and rented a canoe to fit three in our party. It was a GREAT experience. I will be back in the Fall to see the pretty colors with a friend for a day trip :)
Christina C — Google review
Love it. Second time canoeing and we spent 2.30 hr on the water. Saw a few osprey. The weather was really nice so we had a lot of other canoes/kayaks along the way. The check in was very quick. They just told us about some spots we may want to stop and sent us to the canoe right away. There was a restroom at the end before we took a shuttle back.
Pornlada L — Google review
The kayaking idea and place is great. The 7miles one way is super pretty with lots of stop options along the way and picturous scenery along the way. You are going with the current, which is amazing and helps a lot. When they say it takes you 2-3hours or depending on conditions longer, they will be right and know what they are talking about. Give yourself the time they suggest and arrive early! The website states “pick up anytime between 10AM-2PM“. You need to keep in mind that this sentence means that you have to be on the water by 2PM. If you are not, they are very very strict about not letting you rent that day and will make you reschedule. KNOW THAT BEFORE. Give yourself time and plan to arrive at 1:45 the latest. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for parking and find parking. Overall a great experience but would have liked to know about the strictness of their policies timewise. (Keep in mind too, that there is traffic coming from the highway and you’ll probably take longer than what google maps says).

What a refreshing experience. They made everything so easy. I had to change the day of reservations due to weather and it was seamless and I cannot say enough about how friendly and helpful their staff was. Definitely will use again.

I received a gift certificate for Taylor Falls Cannot & Kayak for my 65th birthday. What a perfect way to spend time with one of my favorite humans .... my 13 yr old granddaughter. Our first outing with you was perfect - from the equipment to your kind and helpful team. We are already planning our next adventure with you.
Anne C — Google review
Our small group had a wonderful afternoon on the St Croix River. Originally, we were going to take the Taylor Falls to Osceola Landing trip to celebrate a birthday, but decided the kids didn't have the stamina to last the 2-3 hours. Instead, we did the local paddle which turned out to be a good choice. We would recommend paddling upstream toward the Hwy 8 bridge first and take advantage of the easier paddle downstream back to the launch area.
Brian F — Google review
Taylors Falls Canoe and Kayak rental was so easy to book on line and check in once there. Ample parking. Great staff at the pick up and drop off point, easy to find. We did the 2-3 hour ride and it took us 2.5 hours to complete ( we are ages 31 & 37) the Taylors Falls to the Osceola landing. This included a short break. The bus came just as we pulled up our canoe. I have also done with this my family of various ages. Love their rentals as they are clean and have a quick/safe ride back to our cars. Gorgeous views!!!

The American restaurant Chisago House offers excellent cuisine and top-notch service. It is a true treasure that transports you to a more uncomplicated era. The breakfast options are particularly enjoyable, and the ambiance reflects the charm of a small town.
Great food and service. A real gem taking you back to simpler times. We loved our breakfast and the small town atmosphere.

Came here for a late lunch on a Saturday. There was plenty of open seating. Atmosphere is quite dated. Looks like a 60s-70s era diner that has never been updated. Our table ordered a mix of items - silver dollar pancakes, biscuits & gravy, a burger & fries, and a hot beef sandwich. The food took a long time to come out (over 30 minutes), especially considering the amount of other patrons. Everyone said their food was good, and they all cleaned their plates. After lunch, we split peach pie a la mode and an apple dumpling a la mode. The desserts were tasty and just enough to satisfy. Service was very good. Our server was very attentive. Overall - food was good, service was good, and the meal for 4 with dessert was $45. Ok, but will probably try another restaurant when we’re back in town.
Terri S — Google review
I was really hungry after walking the trails and taking a riverboat ride. I pulled this place up on Google Maps, and thought, hey it’s right there and it looks nice and old fashioned. I didn’t read any reviews (mistake) I just headed on in! Practically everything people said about this place is true. I walked in and was NOT greeted by Nurse Rachet. She just glared at me like she was going to call someone from the back with a chainsaw. I said in my most cheerful voice HI! She glared and said what can I get you. Uneasily I said, should I seat myself? Meanwhile some old toothless guy sitting at the counter was glaring at me as well. Now I am thinking for sure I’ll hear the buzz saw soon. So Ms. Rachet says yeah, seat yourself, and there’s a Buffett in that (pointing) dining room. Okay, I say, I think I’ll go for that. I walk on the dinning room at it is completely empty, except one guy at the buffet. A young guy comes over and cheerfully asks if I want something to drink, spoiler alert: this was the highlight of the meal. I head over to the buffet and find a decent looking salad bar, nothing fancy, just the basics. I move to the hot food area, there are four or five hot pans, none of which have steam coming out of them. One holds chicken that I swear to you is so old it’s petrified. It’s hard as a rock and has no scent. Then there’s Swedish meatballs, (or they are just old and you think the twang is Swedish) next is the pork something, I don’t know what it is but when I get it to the table, I find out the color is grey. The mashed potatoes only come with white (cold) gravy. I try to choke some of this cold, old food down because I am starving, I ask the cheerful young man for a refill on my half drank Pepsi and he says “ you are only allowed one refill, so do you want to wait until the one you have is gone”? I say how about you just bring me the one refill in a new cup. Really???? You’re at Taylor Falls where people walk and hike all day and you serve them a 10 ounce cup filled with ice and about 5 ounces of Pepsi and you want to charge for anything more than one refill??? The food was awful, not hot, not tasty and certainly not fresh. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLACE!!! More than likely that meal will have me in the bathroom for half the night. Not sure which health department inspects this place, but a visit is WAY PAST DUE.
N.E M — Google review
Got here really early on a Sunday and had the place to ourselves. Good service, good breakfast, reality solid experience. Woke up in a tent in the rain and this breakfast really turned the day around!
Craig W — Google review
I thought this place was great. If you want great atmosphere this isn't the place for you. If you want great FOOD then this is the place for you. The Friday night buffet was outstanding. Fish was cooked perfectly (2 types) and the chicken was fried to perfection. Everything about the meal was tasty. My wife and I left with tip for about 25 bucks. I couldn't believe that there weren't more people. The things I didn't know about the place is that it is open all the time. It seems to us that they only advertise their buffets? They have a HUGE menu and while I didn't have everything on it, I'm sure I will in the future. If you are ok with the old wood lodge look and good food, this is the place. A++++
Nick J — Google review
Quaint old restaurant that we will be happy to visit again!! They serve what I understand to be classic American food, made after you order, and it comes to the table piping hot! Clean, tasty food, served by a cheerful, motherly lady who interacted very well with the customers. The buffet had a good choice, but targeted primarily to the American palate (We are originally from South Asia, so beef is not a choice). Definitely a place to relax in with family after a visit to the state park!! Prices are pleasantly low for the quality and quantity - real value for money!!
Sunderraju R — Google review
Great food, friendly service. We stopped in around 3:30 in the afternoon not expecting to still have a salad bar, but were pleasantly surprised to see it was not only still up, but it was a nice, fresh spread of in-house fare including two different soups. Three of our party ordered pie and an apple dumpling. They were very impressed. Definitely contradicts the few bad reviews I read on here.
Michael K — Google review
We waited FIFTY minutes for breakfast food and a sandwich. There were only sixteen people in the restaurant, with mostly empty tables. We ordered an appetizer that didn't come until our order came. It took 15 minutes just to get water. When the food finally came, it wasn't good. The portions were small and the food was overcooked. Almost all of the chairs had the legs poking through the seats. The table appeared to have been washed, but our napkins were stuck to it when we tried to get to our silverware. I would recommend avoiding this place. We would never try it again.
