Shiloh in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Shiloh, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Shiloh, Tennessee is best known for Shiloh National Military Park, one of the most intact and evocative Civil War battlefields in the United States, with preserved landscapes, monuments, and an informative visitor center. Walking and driving tours trace key positions from the 1862 battle, while the national cemetery offers a sober perspective on its cost. The area also features prehistoric Native American mounds and easy access to the Tennessee River, adding archaeological and scenic interest. Nearby campgrounds and picnic areas make it a quiet, low-key destination for history-focused road trips.
With favorites like Shiloh Tours and Museum, Shiloh National Military Park, and Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Shiloh while you’re here. Shiloh National Military Park is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and outdoor lovers alike. This site, steeped in Civil War history, features well-preserved battlefields and offers self-guided driving tours that allow visitors to explore at their own pace. The park's visitor center provides essential maps highlighting significant locations, ensuring you won't miss any of the important sights.
Incredible experience here. Wish we had allowed more time for our visit, but early sunset kept us on a time crunch. Visitor center was nice. Helpful ranger got us started on the driving audio tour. We worked through it in just under two hours but could have taken twice as long and gotten out at each stop. Nevertheless it was incredibly informative and gave context to every corner of the battlefield. We will stop back the next time we are in the area and take some additional time to absorb all that the park has to offer.

Beautifully structured historical park. Amazing statuary.. plan 2-4 hours to get through it. A downloadable app is available to narrate and guide you through each stop telling you it's historical significance..the auditorium has a video about it as well to give you a better perspective.

If you have never been to Shiloh National Military Park. It is a must on your bucket list. I've been going to this place since I was a kid, and even after all these years, I still break down inside. This place will take you all day or even two if you choose. There are plenty of restrooms throughout the park. You can also ride bikes through the park if you choose to. (Must have a helmet). Bring plenty of drinks and even pack a lunch. This park is free of charge, but donations are accepted.

Really great! The 45-minute movie really brings the enormity of this battle home. You walk away really understanding the markers that you see on the fields and along the wood lines during the auto tour. The national cemetery is so beautiful, quiet and peaceful. What a perfect place to rest for all of eternity. Massive kudos to everyone involved in managing and maintaining this site for the American public. Job well done. Thanks so much!

One of the most hallowed places on American soil. The Battle of Shiloh, was, at the time, the bloodiest battle in American history. Two days of fighting brought over 23,000 casualties, including nearly 3500 dead. The self-guided auto tour is amazing; make sure you use the National Park Service app! We only spent a day there, but much like Gettysburg, the battlefield is so well preserved, monuments are so omnipresent, and historical sources are so plentiful, we could have spent a week here and not covered it all. My only criticism is the National Park Service has allowed vast amounts of undergrowth to flourish where there was none at the time of the battle. Cannon, therefore sit facing thick woods where they would have been facing open fields, taking away some of the feeling of what soldiers would have faced. An otherwise small detail in an amazing and historic place.

Very cool national park. Lots to see and do here, and very educational. Its a drive through park with opportunities to get and walk and take pictures along the way. Doesn't take too long to drive through and tour, so you'll have plenty of time to cross the border into Mississippi and travel to Corinth to see its sister park, stop in at Brices Crossroad Nation Military Park, Natchez Trace Parkway visitor center, and stop in at the Elvis Presley Birth Place Museum all in one day. Warning there is no cell service at the park. Highly recommend bring walkie talkies and a Garmin.
Susan H — Google review
The guidebook says 3-4 hours to see everything. Budget a day. The free audio driving tour is great. It takes you around the battlefield in chronological order as things unfolded. Plenty of opportunities to get out of the car, walk the grounds. Lots of monuments and canon. Highlyrecommended. 2 thumbs 👍

Good historical park as a lot of lives have been lost but it’s good to learn about the history that happened! It’s a great park to do a car audio tour as you drive around the different stations around the park! I suggest starting out at the visitor center and getting a map from the park rangers! If you have a national park stamp book, make sure to bring it as this location has up to 4 or 5 stamps! Make sure to check out the historical mounds along the way! Also, watch out for poison ivy and snakes along the trail as I did see a few!

Shiloh Tours and Museum offers guided tours of the Shiloh Civil War battlefield at Shiloh Park, showcasing one of the largest displays of relics and artifacts from that era. Visitors have praised the knowledgeable and friendly guide, Larry DeBerry, who shared captivating stories about the Civil War and World War II. His expertise and engaging presentation brought the battlefield to life, making it a highlight of many visitors' trips.
Do yourself a favor and meet up with Larry DeBerry. He knows so much about Shiloh and the background of the Army's and people involved (heck, he's related to many of them) and presents his knowledge in any easy, thoughtful, friendly manner. I have worked with guides on many battlefields, and Larry is among the best.

Staff was very helpful and friendly. Loved the video/movie. Highly recommend watching that before you tour the battlefield. The cemetery was beautiful and well maintained.
Christopher L — Google review
Very affordable tour package and a down to earth gentleman with an interesting, folksy, and personal attachment to Shiloh Church. Larry was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. We share a passion for history and he has several personal connections to the history and people of the area. I could have spent days rummaging through his artifacts. Cannister shot, spent artillery shell frags, weather worn rifles, and a collection of bullets and shells, the likes I dare say I never saw before nor ever will again. His collection of miniature soldiers, and Indians is impressive as well. The Widow Bells family bible sat quietly in the open in an unassuming table. Came across an original Harper's Weekly from 1862 and several photos and tin types from the period. I stopped in to check out the shop and had zero expectations. Honestly thought I might be walking into a "tourist trap". Man I could not have been any more dead wrong and presumptive (typical carpetbagger thinking I admit😅) anyway, if you're in the area, want a very personal connection to Shiloh and or the Tennessee River history then THIS is your place

The gentleman here who runs the store is very friendly and very knowledgeable about the battle of Shiloh. He has a lot of artifacts on display. Worth a stop if you have some extra time while visiting the park.

I stopped in not expecting much. I have just been driving and seeing this and that. This was the HIGHLIGHT of my trip. Larry was incredible. A walking history book. More than Shiloh. A very smart, funny, kind man. He even played guitar and sang for me! I might go back before I head home. I will never forget the experience

Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant

Restaurant
Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant is a long-standing family-owned establishment known for its Southern classics like catfish and shrimp. The restaurant offers a warm and cozy atmosphere, with one room featuring bookshelves and the other boasting a roaring fire in a huge fireplace. Customers have raved about the generous portions of delicious food, including seafood combo platters with clam strips and fried frog legs, as well as delectable desserts like caramel pie.
Overall a great experience! The Catfish Hotel is the go-to spot for catfish and good vittles in the Shiloh area. Firstly, the restaurant and grounds are impressive. A neat building, plenty of parking on the banks of the Tennessee River! Just beautiful. Secondly, you are greeted with a smile and they are truly glad you are dining with them. Service is excellent and genuine. Thirdly, you will not leave hungry. It’s lots of food, prepared well. For those going for the first time, be advised the Cole slaw is not a traditional mayo, sweet slaw. It’s chopped cabbage and carrots served with a side of dressing of your choice. Also, the dressing are varied and unique. The 1,000 island is a touch sweeter than you expect. The ranch is excellent. The hush puppies are basic hush puppies no surprises with corn, onions or sugar. The onion rings are amazing! You get a crispy mountain of rings! These are worth the trip. They sold out of the bloomin’ onions by 6:00 pm on the 4th. My imagination says these are excellent as well. The whole fried catfish is seasoned well, fried right and is served sliced so the meat pulls right away from the bone. If you are not used to whole, bone-in fish the flavor is stronger than filets. The filets are great! Thick, seasoned and fried crispy. Baked sweet potato is perfect and served with butter and brown sugar on the side. They also have baked potatoes and fries. Side salads are fresh. They also have an assortment of fried items; shrimp, clams and deviled crabs. In addition, Burgers, chicken and even picky eaters can find a menu item to satisfy. Overall a great experience. We will return!

Still the absolute best Catfish around the area. Fluffy white and expertly breaded. Also notable was the strawberry salad that comes with a raspberry vinaigrette. The service was polite but when I had asked for Cinnamon with my Sweet Potato the poor thing brought back a Black Pepper shaker. Luckily, at least I had sense to know the difference and didn't pepper my potato. Plus the coleslaw is tangy and overrated. The floor i ln the dining area was an absolute mess but I've always enjoyed the rustic atmosphere and "By the River" vibe. I enjoyed my private solo table and the conversations where light and cordial. Have absolutely no wish to return here ever again and it definitely wasn't worth $30.

Great old family restaurant. Forgot to take a before photo, but here's my after! I got the stuffed shrimp, baked potato and house salad with hush puppies. My husband got the platter that had a stuffed crab, which I ALMOST got, but am so glad I went with the shrimp with crab imperial stuffing instead. The only complaint would be the hush puppies had zero flavor. They were fried fine, but there was no seasoning or even onions in them.

Worth the drive ( which is very scenic). Excellent customer service. Very nice atmosphere. Family friendly. Please check the online menu for all selections. Appetizers. Salads. Catfish. Ribs. Chicken, etc. Huge portions; very shareable! If you order the Whole Catfish, please note that it is 4 whole catfish!!! ( I found out afterwards, that you can order a half portion). The two filets are gigantic too. The baked sweet potato was delicious; served with brown sugar and butter. The baked potato was cooked perfectly- fluffy. The salad dressings are homemade. The coleslaw is interesting- you add however much salad dressing you want to add- it’s sweet. Overall, excellent place to eat with great service, friendly staff and delicious food.

DO NOT miss eating here if you are anywhere close to it. Great menu and great food. Thank me later!
Clay P — Google review
Wonderful food, we had some of it all. Fish fillers, whole fish, Cajun and ribs. Salads were fresh. Blooming onion was appealing to the eyes and taste buds. Ribs have a special homemade sauce that makes the meat melt off the bone. Very friendly service every time we visit. If you leave hungry, it's your own fault.

LOVED it!! I highly recommend for anyone wanting to try their FAMOUS CATFISH! Delicious!! Will come back for more!!

The food is good, the young server was sweet and spot on. Strawberry salad is different than other restaurants and was really good.
