If you only have 1 day to spend in the Cape Coast, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Cape Coast offers a powerful look into West Africa’s history, with Cape Coast Castle and nearby Elmina Castle serving as major sites of the transatlantic slave trade and UNESCO World Heritage–listed landmarks. The town’s coastline features sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere, contrasting with the emotional weight of its historic forts and museums. Close by, Kakum National Park draws visitors with its rainforest canopy walkway, rich birdlife, and guided nature trails. The city also provides a window into contemporary Ghanaian culture through its markets, festivals, and fishing communities.
With favorites like Orange Beach Resort, Cape Coast Castle, and Museum, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Orange Beach Resort and Sahara Spring Restaurant & Pub so you can get the best taste of the Cape Coast while you’re here. History Museums
Cape Coast Castle, located in southern Ghana, is a significant historical site that offers insight into the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The imposing whitewashed castle overlooks the sea and was once a major hub for the trade. Visitors can take hour-long tours led by staff to explore the dark dungeons where slaves were held for weeks before being traded. The contrast between these dungeons and the governor's bedroom with its ocean views is striking.
Visiting Cape Coast Castle is an unforgettable journey into a significant, painful part of world history. As one of the key slave castles along Ghana's coast, it offers a sobering and deeply moving look at the transatlantic slave trade. What I liked: The guided tour was exceptional—informative, respectful, and emotionally compelling. The guides are knowledgeable and share the history with dignity and clarity. Walking through the dungeons, the "Door of No Return," and the governor’s quarters puts into stark contrast the horrors of the past and the resilience of the human spirit. The museum inside the castle is small but impactful, with artifacts, photos, and displays that give further context. The preserved architecture of the castle, perched against the Atlantic Ocean, adds a haunting beauty to the experience. What could be improved: Some areas, especially the museum, could benefit from updated signage and multimedia features for a more immersive educational experience. Facilities like the restrooms and gift shop could be upgraded to better support the number of visitors the site attracts. Final thoughts: Cape Coast Castle is not just a tourist attraction—it is a historical monument that educates and provokes reflection. It's a must-visit for anyone traveling to Ghana who wants to understand more about African, African Diaspora, and world history.

Visited both the palaces. Feels like Greece when you see that much white. Though white is the color of peace, the castle had different past that you can feel once you are inside. This used to be called “Doors of no return” for the slaves.
Akter H — Google review
A powerful and emotional visit — a must-see in Ghana Visiting Cape Coast and its coastal forts is a deeply moving experience. It’s a real cultural shock to stand in the very places where Europeans once used slavery to enrich themselves. Walking through the “Door of No Return” and learning about the transatlantic slave trade leaves a lasting impact — it’s both heartbreaking and profoundly educational. The guides do an excellent job explaining this dark chapter of history, showing how the Dutch, British, Danish, Swedish, and Portuguese all played roles in the trade. It’s not an easy visit, but it’s an important one — everyone should take the time to come here, reflect, and remember.

I've waited years to come here and it was a very educational and emotional experience to process. Here you have very knowledgeable guides who give you the indepth history that's not truly learned in our school systems and that is truly a disservice to anyone who thinks they know the real history of slave traders. They also had local sellers for gift. They did try to overcharge on some things but as long as you know the difference between their cedis and dollar you can't get took. Our guides were awesome with that. Definitely a once in a lifetime tour everyone should take.
Tasha R — Google review
It's different to say it was a good considering the grievous atrocities which existed there for 400 years. I do appreciate history and as a Jamaican, I was able to have a partial view with lots of imagination of the fate and experiences of my foreparents.
Debbie H — Google review
It feels strange rating a slave castle, but I am grateful for the opportunity to visit and experience this place. As a child of our ancestors I hope the ones lost here felt my presence as I felt theirs. To have such attrocitoes practiced in such a beautiful place is beyond comprehension. How it must have felt being able to hear the ocean, to hear home and never be able to be free in it again. We had an amazing tour guide. I will never forget this visit.
Cheryl L — Google review
If you’re in Ghana, Cape Coast Castle is a must-see. The guided tour offers a stark, powerful window into the transatlantic slave trade, from the dungeons to the “Door of No Return.” The views of the harbor are stunning, and the exhibits do a good job of balancing history with personal stories. Plan for a couple of hours, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water. A profound reminder of history that invites reflection and learning.
Mark L — Google review
Emotionally, it is quite poignant to witness a castle renowned for its impressive and sturdy engineering—a testament to architectural beauty—only to learn that within its formidable walls lies a dark history as a starting point for the tragic slave trade. This duality between grandeur and sorrow stirs a sense of heartbreak within me, yet it remains an important piece of history that I would strongly encourage individuals to visit and experience firsthand, to better understand its profound impact on humanity.

Fort Victoria

Fortress
Constructed in 1821, Fort Victoria is situated on a hillside in western Cape Coast. The British utilized it as an outlook post, providing breathtaking views of the town.
Rich in history, yet sadly overlooked. Despite being just a 5-minute drive from Cape Coast Castle, many visitors miss it entirely. Nestled on a quiet hill and hidden by thick vegetation, it’s easy to pass by unless you know it’s there. Tip: Always ask the guides at the main castle for directions—they often forget to include it in the full Cape Coast experience. This site deserves more attention and care. With proper restoration and promotion, it could become a powerful addition to Ghana’s historical tourism circuit.
Sylvia H — Google review
The location on google maps is wrong. You can find it by asking the locals. But it is an abandoned place and unsafe to visit. I just admired it from a distance ( there are certain vantage points in Cape Coast you can see the fort from). Visited Fort William instead where there’s a resident and hence much safer.
Ama B — Google review
Full of history but seem neglected . Easy to miss it out by any visitor to Cape Coast Castle even though it is just about 5mins drive away. It seats on a hill but covered by the vegetative cover around . Always remember to ask the guides at the main castle for direction as they forget to add it to the total Cape coast experience.
Theo O — Google review
Constructed in 1821 on the site of a ruined fort built in 1712, Fort Victoria was formerly known as ‘Phipp’s Tower’, in honour of its initial constructor English Governor Phipps. It was later renamed Fort Victoria after Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

Orange Beach Resort offers a vibrant and lively atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for travelers under 40. The resort is known for its friendly owner and staff who provide exceptional hospitality, ensuring that all guests feel welcome. The on-site bar and restaurant offer delicious food and a relaxed setting, complemented by reggae music that adds to the overall ambiance. While the club next door may create a lively environment, it can be noisy for those seeking early nights.
I came back to Orange beach house resort for the second time last weekend. We are an NGO that brings volunteers to the schools and doing many other projects.. This time, We stayed in the Orange beach resort with a delegation of 13 people from the UK for 2 nights on the weekend 23-25/8/24 and it was absolutely amazing! The service, the clean rooms the kindness toward us. The volunteers are 17 years old and they had the best Ghanaian experience so far in the country. Everything was beyond our expectations. We want to thank Evan’s and the team, the fantastic chef! It was so nice stay there and we looking forward to come again. We had lots of requests and we got all help and best service from Evans and the staff. Highly recommend!! Thank you for making the privacy for us to be able to do our activities with no interruptions. We will be back again!🫶🏾🙏🏾 #FZY #TEN

Don’t go. A very unpleasant experience. Ants infestation and other insects in the room, loud music until late, weed smoking individuals and dodgy characters even at 8am. TERRIBLE food, completely overpriced and lacking any taste. Terribly dangerous stairs to access the room.
Julia F — Google review
Great food and location. Has everything you need, but quite basic so keep that in mind for your expectations. About what I'd expect for the low price. Staff are nice. I'd stay here again for a couple nights but wouldn't want to stay much longer than that.
Annalee M — Google review
The owner is lovely and so nice! We had a great time there with Evan and his puppies. The resort is right by the beach, you can sit there while watching the ocean and there is a direct access to the beach. We felt very welcomed
Hamy N — Google review
The location of the place is beautiful, right on the beach. However it didn’t meet the descriptions online. We had to work online during our stay and there was no wifi in the rooms. To have running water in the rooms the team had to manually turn on and off the water tank, which was a bit impractical. There was loud music and people talking until late into the night and also early in the morning. There was no bonfire at night, the sun beds are no longer there. There are a lot of people hanging around the place near the entrance and right in the beach side, so it honestly doesn’t feel very safe. The people who run the place are super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately it doesn’t make up for the overall feeling that the place is run down and not very well kept.
Anna W — Google review
The best place to stay in all of Cape Coast! Evans is the most welcoming host you can imagine and the vibe is amazing! Also perfect for dog lovers
P.Riße — Google review
Dont go there! You can tell this used to be a nice place, but is not any more. It looks run down, the room smells unhealthy, the pillow smelled like urine, there are cigarette buts everywhere. There is a loud reggaeclub next door and weird people keep passing through the place. The general atmosphere is not nice and makes you want to leave. We left early and got no money back of course… the only nice part is central location and the view of the beach.
Katharina H — Google review
We only went to chill at the bar and eat so I can't comment on the rooms however I can comment on the hospitality of the owner who was super chill and friendly. He made us feel very welcome despite not being residents. The staff were also offering great service. So much so that the chef personally took my order and made me exactly what my taste buds and stomach needed 😜 We loved it there....the reggae music next door helped set the vibe, and the beach setting was super relaxing....you could stay there all night! We returned two afternoons in a row. Definitely worth a visit if you want great tasting food and cocktails made with fresh fruit juice at a really good price.

Nestled on Kings Street, Sahara Spring Restaurant & Pub is a vibrant hotspot in Cape Coast that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Whether you're visiting during the day or night, this lively venue buzzes with energy and charm. Guests rave about the deliciously prepared dishes, like fried rice paired with fried plantain and barracuda, showcasing a true passion for culinary excellence.
Our group of 5 came here on a Thursday around 2pm. Not busy at all. We sat on the second floor which had cool breeze and nice vistas. Our orders came out within half an hour whilst we were enjoying our drinks. We received excellent customer service from our attentive waiter. Overall we had an excellent dining experience here.

I love its location. Its easily identifiable and quite serene with an occasional honk or screech from moving vehicles as it is just by the roadside. There's music in the background at just the right volume so you could enjoy both music and conversation with others. The food took awfully long to arrive. The fried rice was served cold and didnt taste as good as the others. Apart from that I had a great time.
Yvonne H — Google review
One of the best spots in Cape Coast. Good service, nice atmosphere, great portions/servings. Manager even apologized for getting a bit wet because of the rain. Kebab as starter, fufu and mixed jollof all good and plenty.
Jeroen T — Google review
Their food portions are one of the best I’ve seen in cape coast ! Their lobster was well spiced, normally people don’t cook seafood well but theirs very very well done .The waiter we got was very friendly as well. Definitely a place for a girls night out and worth the money as well!
Elwin Q — Google review
This place looks and feels like food poisoning. I'm glad I read the other reviews before ordering food. There's no running water to wash your hands, only a bucket filled with dirt and debris. The toilets do not flush. The bartender told us only two of the cocktails were available, and they would still require alterations. I'm not sure what this place is if they can't serve drinks or food that won't make you sick. There are almost no customers here, but plenty of staff, yet it takes at least half an hour to get any service. 🤷‍♂️🙅 2 stars for the atmosphere: they have music and goofy Americans dancing.... Edit for the owner: I've seen the numerous excuses you left for other negative reviews. I suppose the eco-friendliness helps explain the cockroaches as well? If the industry of serving uncontaminated food and drink is so tough I would like to propose a few options for you: - Instead of writing a book of excuses for each negative review you could spend time to improve the state of the establishment - Consider paying Google to remove all the negative reviews, you clearly need it - Take the time to reflect on how bad your establishment is and exit the "tough" industry
John K — Google review
Jollof was very tasteless. My okro soup was not good at all. They put only wele in my soup
Kojo F — Google review
The chicken wings were not available when I visited. I expected the fufu to have more goat and snails in proportion to the large soup.
